see_v what_o use_n we_o must_v make_v of_o this_o doctrine_n first_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n that_o we_o never_o quench_v any_o grace_n or_o gift_n that_o god_n bestow_v spirit_n 1_o upon_o us._n second_o we_o must_v still_o labour_v to_o have_v great_a measure_n of_o gift_n for_o the_o wicked_a 2_o may_v come_v to_o have_v some_o small_a gift_n &_o such_o as_o may_v be_v quite_o take_v away_o from_o they_o last_o it_o do_v put_v a_o plain_a difference_n between_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o godless_a between_o they_o that_o bear_v a_o show_n of_o holiness_n and_o they_o that_o be_v indeed_o the_o holy_a one_o of_o the_o lord_n for_o 3_o the_o one_o endure_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o the_o other_o last_v for_o ever_o now_o if_o we_o require_v a_o further_a sanctification_n trial_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v receive_v that_o spirit_n which_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n or_o that_o which_o will_v abide_v for_o ever_o with_o we_o then_o let_v we_o mark_v his_o word_n the_o way_n to_o heaven_n sincere_o and_o pure_o and_o such_o governor_n must_v we_o obey_v and_o be_v rule_v by_o they_o according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n neither_o must_v we_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n then_o if_o we_o will_v stand_v in_o trouble_n let_v we_o labour_n to_o be_v ground_v on_o the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n of_o a_o new_a life_n of_o his_o fatherly_a providence_n and_o let_v this_o purge_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o if_o we_o can_v do_v this_o than_o nothing_o shall_v separate_v we_o from_o god_n as_o paul_n say_v rom._n 8._o and_o again_o he_o say_v there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o they_o have_v his_o spirit_n to_o purge_v they_o from_o sin_n and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n the_o till_o his_o faith_n fail_v and_o though_o his_o three_o learned_a adversary_n reason_v against_o he_o to_o prove_v he_o a_o hypocrite_n yet_o his_o conscience_n sustain_v he_o and_o therefore_o reckon_v up_o his_o virtue_n chapter_n 28._o and_o 31._o and_o he_o also_o confess_v his_o faith_n i_o know_v that_o my_o redeemer_n live_v this_o be_v his_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v his_o conscience_n that_o in_o his_o trouble_n sustain_v he_o these_o thing_n have_v no_o less_o fruit_n in_o prosperity_n for_o the_o want_n of_o they_o cause_n man_n to_o lift_v up_o themselves_o on_o high_a but_o the_o word_n repress_v pride_n lust_n and_o love_n of_o worldly_a thing_n so_o that_o they_o be_v â—â—unâ—le_a in_o prosperity_n for_o the_o worldling_n seek_v after_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n because_o they_o never_o feel_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n they_o seek_v their_o own_o glory_n because_o they_o never_o feel_v what_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v and_o never_o seek_v knowledge_n because_o they_o know_v not_o what_o the_o soul_n be_v yea_o the_o child_n of_o god_n because_o they_o labour_v not_o continual_o to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n they_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o the_o love_n of_o earthly_a thing_n after_o the_o example_n of_o the_o wicked_a for_o prosperity_n be_v as_o a_o flood_n which_o carry_v all_o thing_n with_o it_o and_o as_o well_o good_a as_o bad_a and_o therefore_o they_o be_v often_o carry_v away_o with_o the_o love_n of_o these_o outward_a thing_n but_o the_o child_n of_o god_n which_o do_v diligent_o labour_v after_o these_o thing_n they_o behave_v themselves_o so_o as_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v by_o their_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n
in_o prayer_n wherefore_o god_n often_o deny_v we_o our_o request_n because_o we_o use_v not_o to_o pursue_v and_o prosecute_v they_o with_o servant_n prayer_n for_o if_o we_o have_v pray_v twice_o or_o thrice_o for_o one_o thing_n and_o yet_o be_v not_o hear_v but_o receive_v as_o it_o be_v the_o repulse_n we_o straightway_o surcease_n and_o leave_v off_o our_o prayer_n contrary_a to_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o man_n of_o god_n who_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o repulse_n but_o still_o continue_v his_o prayer_n both_o morning_n and_o evening_n so_o that_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o if_o we_o will_v obtain_v mercy_n god_n will_v sometime_o defer_v his_o grant_n to_o try_v we_o whether_o we_o ask_v careful_o or_o no_o request_n whether_o we_o true_o and_o reverent_o esteem_v of_o the_o thing_n pray_v for_o whether_o we_o believe_v thorough_o his_o mercy_n and_o promise_n and_o whether_o we_o will_v as_o thankful_o use_v it_o when_o we_o have_v it_o as_o we_o do_v careful_o pray_v for_o it_o before_o we_o have_v it_o the_o lord_n can_v away_o with_o our_o cold_a ask_n and_o when_o we_o give_v but_o one_o sigh_n and_o there_o come_v sometime_o one_o tear_n which_o be_v as_o the_o tear_n of_o a_o harlot_n he_o see_v that_o we_o feel_v not_o our_o want_n thorough_o we_o esteem_v not_o of_o his_o mercy_n reverent_o we_o make_v not_o our_o request_n earnest_o and_o therefore_o he_o send_v we_o often_o as_o empty_a away_o as_o we_o come_v we_o must_v then_o give_v the_o lord_n no_o leisure_n to_o be_v free_a but_o prosecute_v our_o prayer_n with_o importunity_n as_o do_v the_o widow_n mention_v in_o the_o gospel_n but_o we_o must_v remember_v in_o our_o often_o prayer_n to_o use_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v prayer_n the_o second_o thing_n observe_v in_o diligent_a prayer_n for_o some_o use_n prayer_n often_o who_o want_v heavenly_a discretion_n turn_v it_o to_o their_o own_o discommodity_n for_o some_o have_v pervert_v most_o wicked_o these_o place_n before_o allege_v through_o too_o strict_a a_o consideration_n of_o the_o assiduity_n of_o prayer_n and_o think_v that_o they_o may_v give_v over_o all_o their_o calling_n in_o a_o active_a and_o cruil_a life_n and_o whole_o and_o continual_o bestow_v all_o time_n on_o prayer_n but_o this_o be_v too_o preposterous_a a_o diligence_n which_o that_o we_o may_v avoid_v it_o prayer_n shall_v be_v true_a wisdom_n so_o to_o divide_v the_o time_n and_o season_n as_o we_o may_v impart_v those_o time_n on_o prayer_n which_o most_o may_v make_v for_o god_n glory_n and_o which_o best_a make_v for_o our_o call_n and_o for_o those_o place_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n wherein_o we_o be_v command_v to_o pray_v continual_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v always_o be_v ready_a and_o affect_v to_o pray_v in_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n and_o at_o all_o season_n fit_a for_o prayer_n that_o be_v when_o the_o lord_n do_v call_v we_o to_o it_o and_o our_o estate_n do_v require_v it_o this_o doctrine_n be_v easy_a to_o be_v hear_v but_o hard_o to_o be_v practise_v well_o then_o this_o be_v true_a wisdom_n sabbath_n to_o choose_v the_o sabbath_n whole_o to_o be_v spend_v in_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n from_o morning_n to_o night_n and_o so_o to_o divide_v the_o season_n in_o the_o other_o day_n of_o the_o week_n as_o with_o david_n and_o daniel_n we_o may_v pray_v at_o morning_n noontide_n and_o evening_n and_o that_o therewith_o we_o have_v a_o special_a care_n to_o bestow_v the_o rest_n of_o our_o time_n in_o walk_v in_o our_o call_n for_o as_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o hear_v so_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o put_v that_o in_o use_v which_o we_o have_v hear_v as_o there_o be_v a_o sabbath_n for_o god_n own_o worship_n so_o there_o be_v six_o day_n for_o we_o to_o labour_v in_o and_o as_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o pray_v so_o there_o be_v also_o a_o time_n of_o practise_v neither_o will_v the_o lord_n have_v we_o always_o read_v hear_v or_o pray_v but_o after_o we_o have_v read_v hear_v and_o pray_v to_o show_v forth_o the_o friâ—â—_n of_o they_o in_o our_o conversation_n to_o his_o glory_n and_o as_o heretic_n in_o the_o primitive_a church_n and_o since_o that_o time_n monk_n and_o friar_n have_v labour_v to_o teach_v a_o continual_a pray_n so_o even_o at_o this_o day_n satan_n bewitch_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o with_o that_o persuasion_n wherefore_o we_o must_v know_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v obedience_n rather_o than_o sacrifice_v and_o mercy_n more_o than_o burn_a offering_n for_o why_o do_v we_o hear_v but_o to_o learn_v obedience_n and_o why_o do_v we_o pray_v but_o to_o put_v 42_o our_o prayer_n in_o practice_n or_o why_o have_v we_o knowledge_n but_o to_o use_v it_o to_o god_n glory_n neither_o do_v that_o say_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o martha_n vithstand_v this_o doctrine_n although_o many_o heretic_n have_v both_o object_v and_o pervert_v this_o place_n to_o make_v it_o serve_v their_o purpose_n who_o false_o allege_v the_o place_n say_v mary_n have_v choose_v the_o better_a part_n whereas_o the_o true_a word_n be_v mary_n have_v choose_v the_o good_a part_n in_o which_o place_n martha_n be_v not_o reprove_v in_o that_o she_o be_v a_o good_a huswife_n or_o for_o that_o she_o entertain_v christ_n but_o for_o overmuch_o labour_v in_o her_o housewifry_n and_o entertainment_n at_o such_o time_n as_o she_o shall_v have_v be_v better_o occupy_v neither_o be_v mary_v commend_v for_o that_o she_o do_v nothing_o but_o hear_v and_o pray_v but_o for_o her_o wisdom_n in_o hear_v christ_n careful_o at_o that_o time_n when_o he_o preach_v and_o in_o that_o she_o know_v that_o christ_n do_v less_o care_n and_o will_v be_v better_o satisfy_v though_o her_o provision_n be_v more_o slender_a than_o that_o to_o more_o solemn_a preparation_n they_o shall_v neglect_v the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v the_o fooâ—e_n of_o their_o soul_n otherwise_o it_o must_v be_v suppose_v that_o mary_n be_v as_o careful_a a_o huswife_n as_o martha_n for_o else_o undoubted_o our_o saviour_n christ_n will_v not_o have_v so_o commend_v she_o for_o wise_o discern_v the_o time_n especial_o see_v the_o holy_a scripture_n count_v they_o worse_o than_o infidel_n which_o will_v not_o provide_v for_o their_o family_n but_o this_o doctrine_n be_v sweet_a to_o they_o that_o maintain_v it_o that_o thereby_o they_o may_v avoid_v all_o calling_n laborious_a calling_n and_o all_o cross_n which_o common_o accompany_v the_o same_o â—or_a it_o be_v the_o subtle_a policy_n of_o satan_n when_o he_o can_v get_v we_o to_o neglect_v prayer_n to_o endeavour_n to_o bring_v we_o preposterous_o to_o use_v and_o frequent_a prayer_n by_o cause_v we_o to_o lay_v aside_o our_o calling_n which_o according_a to_o god_n holy_a ordinance_n we_o have_v profess_v wherefore_o let_v we_o labour_v in_o this_o wisdom_n of_o the_o spirit_n whole_o to_o take_v up_o the_o sabbath_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o dâ—uâ—â—e_v our_o other_o time_n as_o we_o may_v still_o persevere_v in_o our_o calling_n which_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v have_v better_a motion_n and_o not_o incur_v so_o dangerous_a opinion_n as_o we_o shall_v do_v if_o we_o give_v ourselves_o to_o continual_a read_n and_o pray_v but_o shall_v we_o speak_v of_o this_o doctrine_n in_o this_o our_o age_n which_o rather_o need_v prayer_n a_o spur_n than_o a_o bridle_n wherein_o many_o pray_v but_o obtain_v not_o because_o they_o be_v not_o diligent_a many_o hear_v but_o be_v fruitless_a because_o they_o use_v no_o diligence_n for_o beside_o that_o they_o want_v this_o wisdom_n of_o the_o sabbath_n that_o that_o be_v appoint_v for_o the_o grow_a of_o their_o soul_n be_v spend_v in_o worldly_a care_n these_o kind_n of_o man_n have_v their_o soul_n very_o barren_a who_o neither_o use_v the_o sabbath_n nor_o redeem_v other_o time_n of_o their_o calling_n to_o bestow_v any_o thing_n in_o hear_v or_o pray_v or_o if_o happy_o they_o do_v hear_v they_o rather_o make_v it_o a_o matter_n to_o â—arpe_a at_o than_o to_o be_v instruct_v by_o it_o these_o man_n as_o they_o will_v hear_v no_o true_a thing_n so_o they_o will_v hear_v false_a and_o though_o they_o will_v mark_v no_o good_a thing_n yet_o they_o will_v mark_v ill_a thing_n not_o that_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n false_a or_o ill_o in_o the_o word_n but_o in_o that_o as_o to_o a_o humble_a spirit_a man_n the_o lord_n make_v the_o word_n the_o savour_n of_o life_n unto_o life_n so_o unto_o they_o that_o be_v ill_o mind_v the_o lord_n make_v it_o the_o savour_n of_o death_n unto_o death_n and_o give_v they_o over_o in_o the_o pride_n of_o their_o heart_n unto_o satan_n that_o he_o may_v delude_v they_o by_o deceivable_a colour_n for_o
will_v never_o fail_v they_o nor_o forsake_v they_o till_o he_o have_v bring_v they_o to_o his_o habitation_n receive_v which_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o do_v the_o like_a for_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n in_o his_o goodness_n by_o keep_v continual_o as_o it_o be_v a_o beadroll_n of_o his_o benefit_n already_o receive_v of_o he_o lest_o by_o let_v the_o old_a slip_n out_o of_o our_o mind_n which_o shall_v make_v we_o thankful_a we_o never_o receive_v the_o new_a whereof_o we_o be_v so_o careful_a 3_o as_o the_o root_n of_o all_o sin_n be_v in_o our_o soul_n so_o the_o beginning_n of_o all_o disease_n be_v in_o our_o body_n and_o as_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n which_o we_o shall_v not_o fall_v into_o if_o the_o lord_n leave_v we_o so_o be_v there_o no_o disease_n which_o shall_v not_o come_v upon_o we_o unless_o he_o preserve_v us._n for_o when_o his_o providence_n disease_n watch_v not_o over_o we_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o fall_v into_o all_o misery_n it_o be_v not_o in_o ourselves_o to_o keep_v our_o good_a name_n from_o evil_a report_n our_o mind_n from_o disquietness_n our_o estate_n from_o poverty_n etc._n etc._n this_o if_o it_o be_v believe_v and_o feel_v it_o will_v both_o make_v we_o thankful_a &_o continue_v in_o prayer_n not_o only_o in_o the_o want_n of_o such_o thing_n we_o desire_v but_o also_o in_o the_o abundance_n of_o those_o we_o enjoy_v for_o man_n live_v not_o by_o bread_n only_o neither_o be_v it_o care_n can_v make_v we_o rich_a nor_o our_o own_o device_n bring_v quietness_n to_o our_o mind_n but_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n who_o in_o his_o providence_n work_v all_o in_o all_o which_o must_v always_o be_v acknowledge_v of_o we_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v make_v use_n of_o all_o thing_n in_o any_o estate_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o
