the king of Assyria and I will defend this city 7 And this shall be a signe unto thee from the LORD that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken 8 Behold I will bring again the shadow of the degrees which is gone down in the †Heb. degrees by or with the sun sun-dial of Ahaz ten degrees backward So the sun returned ten degrees by which degrees it was gone down 9 ¶ The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah when he had been sick and was recovered of his sickness 10 I said in the cutting off of my days I shall go to the gates of the grave I am deprived of the residue of my years 11 I said I shall not see the LORD even the LORD in the land of the living I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world 12 Mine age is departed and is removed from me as a shepherds tent I have cut off like a weaver my life he will cut me off ‖ Or from the thrum with pining sickness from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me 13 I reckoned till morning that as a lion so will he break all my bones from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me 14 Like a crane or a swallow so did I chatter I did mourn as a dove mine eyes fail with looking upward O LORD I am oppressed ‖ Or case me undertake for me 15 What shall I say he hath both spoken unto me and himself hath done it I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul 16 O Lord by these things men live and in all these things is the life of my spirit so wilt thou recover me and make me to live 17 Behold ‖ Or on my peace came great bitterness for peace I had great bitterness but †Heb. thou hast loved my soul from the pit thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption for thou hast cast all my sins behinde thy back 18 For the grave can not praise thee death cannot celebrate thee they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth 19 The living the living he shall praise thee as I do this day the father to the children shall make known thy truth 20 The LORD was ready to save me therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD 21 For Isaiah had said let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaister upon the boyl and he shall recover 22 Hezekiah also had said What is the signe that I shall go up to the house of the LORD CHAP. image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up 8 ¶ Wherefore at that time certain Caldeans came â—â—â—r and accused the Jews 9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar O king live for ever 10 Thou O king hast made a decree that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick shall fall down and worship the golden image 11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fierâ— furnace 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego these men O king †Cald. have sâ—t never and upon thâ—s have not regarded thee they serve not thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 13 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego then they brought these men before the king 14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them Is it ‖ Or of purpose at Ex. 21.23 true O Shadrath Meshach and Abed-nego do not ye serve my gods nor worship the golden image which I have set up 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick ye fall down and worship the image which I have made well but if ye worship not ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands 16 Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king O Nebuchadnezzar we are not careful to answer thee in this matter 17 If it be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of thine hand O king 18 But if not be it known unto thee O king that we will not serve thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 19 ¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar †Cald. filled full of fury and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego therefore he spake and commanded that they should hear the furnace one seven times more then it was wont to be heat 20 And he commanded the †Cald. mighty of strengh most mighty men that were in his army to binde Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace 21 Then these men were bound in their ‖ Or mantles coats their hosen and their ‖ Or turbants hats and their other garments and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 22 Therefore because the kings †Cald. word commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot the ‖ Or spark flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego 23 And these three men Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied and rose up in haste and spake and said unto his ‖ Or governours counsellours Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire They answered and said unto the king True O king 25 He answered and said Lo I see four men loose walking in the midst of the fire and †Cald. â—oâ—re is no â—urt in â—com they have no hurt and the form of the fourth is like the son of God 26 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the †Cald. 〈◊〉 mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spake and said Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego ye servants of the most high God come forth and come hither Then Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego came forth of the midst of the fire 27 And the princes governours and captains and the kings counsellours being gathered together saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power nor was an hair of their head singed neither were their coats changed nor the smell of fire had passed on them 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake and said Blessed be the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego who hath sent his angel and delivered his servants that trusted in him and have changed the kings word and yeelded their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God 29 Therefore †Gold a decree is made by me I make a decree That every people nation and language which speak †Cald. â—â—our â— any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego shall be * Ch. 2.5 †Cald. made pieces cut in pieces and their houses shall be made a dunghil because there is no other god that can deliver after this sort 30 Then the king †Cald. made to prosper promoted Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon CHAP. IV. 1 Nebuchadnezzar confesseth Gods kingdom 4 maketh relation of his dream which the Magitians could not interpret 8 Daniel beareth the dream 19 He interprets it 28 The story of the event NEbuchadnezzar the king unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 2 †Cald. It was feemly before me I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me 3 How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders his kingdom is * Ch. 2.44 an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation 4 ¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house and flourishing in my palace 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream 7 Then came in the magicians the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and I told the dream before them but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof 8 ¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my God and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and before him I told the dream saying 9 O Belteshazzar * Ch. 2.48 master of the magicians Because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee and no secret troubleth thee tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen and the interpretation thereof 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed †Cald. carried away captives to Nineve all my brethren and those that were of my kindred did eat of the * Gen. 43.32 bread of the Gentiles 11 But I kept †Gr. 〈◊〉 soul my self from eating 12 Because I remembred God with all my heart 13 And the most High gave me grace and favour before Enemessar so that I was his †Gr. 〈◊〉 purveyour 14 And I went into Media and left in trust with Gabael the brother of Gabrias ‖ Or in the land 〈◊〉 countrey of Media at Rages a city of Media ten talents of silver 15 Now when Enemessar was dead Sennacherib his son reigned in his stead †Gr. the ways of whom were unsettled whole estate was troubled that I could not go into Media 16 And in the time of Enemessar I gave many alms to my brethren and gave my bread to the hungry 17 And my clothes to the naked and if I saw any of my nation dead or cast ‖ Or behinde the wâ—lls about the walls of Nineve I buried him 18 And if the king Sennacherib had slain any when he was come and * 1 King 19.35 36. II. 1 Tobit leaveth his meat to bury the dead 10 and becometh blinde 11 His wife taketh in work to get her living 14 Her husband and she fall out about a kid NOw when I was come home again and my wife Anna was restored unto me with my son Tobias in the feast of Pentecost which is the holy feast of the seven weeks there was a good dinner prepared me in the which I sat down to eat 2 And when I saw abundance of meat I said to my son Go and bring what poor man soever thou shalt finde out of our brethren who is mindful of the Lord and to I tarry for thee 3 But he came again and said Father one of our nation is strangled and is cast out in the market-place 4 Then before I had tasted of any meat I start up and took him up into a room until the going down of the sun 5 Then I returned and washed my self and ate my meat in heaviness 6 Remembring that prophesie of * Aaâ—â—â— 8.10 Amos as he said Your feasts shall be turned into mourning and all your mirth into lamentation 7 There fore I wept and after the going down of the sun I went and made a grave and buried him 8 But my neighbours mocked me and said This man is not yet afraid to be put to death for this matter * Chap. 1.19 who fled away and yet lo he burieth the dead again 9 The same night also I returned from the burial and slept by the wall of my court-yard being polluted and my face was uncovered 10 And I knew not that there were ‖ Or swallows sparrows in the wall and mine eyes being open the sparrows muted warm dung into mine eyes and ‖ Or white films a whiteness came in mine eyes and I went to the physicians but they helped me not moreover Achiacharus did nourish me until I went into Elymais 11 And my wife Anna ‖ Or was â—â—red to spin in the woment rooms did take womens works to do 12 And when she had sent ‖ Or 〈◊〉 work them home to the owners they paid her wages and gave her also besides a kid 13 And when it was in my house and began to cry I said unto her From whence is this kid is it not stoln render it to the owners * Deut. 22.1 for it is not lawful to eat any thing that is stoln 14 * Job 2.9 But she replied upon me It was given for a gift more then the wages howbeit I did not beleeve her but bade her render it to the owners and I was abashed at her But she replied upon me Where are thine alms and thy righteous deeds ‖ Or lo all things are known to thee behold thou and all thy works are known CHAP. III. 1 Tobit grieved with his wives taunts prayeth 11 Sara reproached by ber fathers maids prayeth also 17 An angel is sent to help them both THen I being grieved did weep and in my sorrow prayed saying 2 O Lord thou art just and all thy works and all thy ways are mercy and truth and thou judgest truly and justly for ever 3 Remember me and look on me punish me not for my sins and ignorances and the sins of my fathers who have sinned before thee 4 For they obeyed not thy commandments wherefore thou hast delivered us * Deut. 28.15 37. for a spoil and unto captivity and unto death and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed 5 And now thy judgements are many and true deal with me according to my sins and my fathers because we have not kept thy commandments neither have walked in truth before thee 6 Now therefore deal with me as seemeth best unto thee and command my spirit to be taken from me that I may be ‖ Or dismissed or delivered dissolved and become earth for it is prositable for me to die rather then to live because I have heard false reproaches and have much sorrow command therefore that I may now be delivered out of this distress and go into the everlasting place turn not thy face away from me 7 It came to pass the same day that in Ecbatane a city of Media Sara the daughter of Raguel was also reproached by her fathers maids 8 Because that she had been married to seven husbands whom Asmodeus the evil spirit had killed before they had lien with her Dost thou not know said they that thou hast strangled thine husbands thou hast had already seven husbands neither wast thou named after any of them 9 Wherefore dost thou beat us for them if they be dead go

XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to
Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. V. 1 Wicked rich men are to fear Gods vengeance 7 We ought to be patient in afflictions after the example of the prophets and Job 12 to forbear swearing 13 to pray in adversity to sing in prosperity 16 to acknowledge mutually our several faults to pray one for another 19 and to reduce a straying brother to the truth GO to now ye rich men weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you 2 Your â—iches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten 3 Your gold and silver is cankered and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh as it were fire ye have heaped treasure together for the last days 4 Behold the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields which is of you kept back by fraud crieth and the cries of them which have reaped are entred into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just and he doth not resist you 7 ‖ Or be long patient or suffer with long patience Be patient therefore brethren unto the coming of the Lord. Behold the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth and hath long patience for it until he receive the early and latter rain 8 Be ye also patient stablish your hearts for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh 9 ‖ Or groan or grieve not Grudge not one against another brethren lest ye be condemned behold the judge standeth before the door 10 Take my brethren the prophets who have spoken in the name of the Lord for an example of suffering affliction and of patience 11 Behold we count them happy which endure Ye have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the end of the Lord that the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy 12 But above all things my brethren * Mat. 5.34 swear not neither by heaven neither by the earth neither by any other oath but let your yea be yea and your nay nay lest ye fall into condemnation 13 Is any among you afflicted let him pray Is any merry let him sing psalms 14 Is any sick among you let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him * Mar. 6 1â— anointing him with oyl in the name of the Lord 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him 16 Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be healed The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are and * 1 Kin. 17.1 he prayed ‖ Or. in his prayer earnestly that it might not rain and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six moneths 18 And * 1 Kin. 18.42 45. he prayed again and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit 19 Brethren * Mat. 18.15 if any of you do err from the truth one convert him 20 Let him know the he which converteth the sinner from the errour of his way shall save a soul from death and shall hide a multitude of sins ¶ The first epistle general of S. IV. 1 He exhorteth them to cease from sin by the example of Christ and the consideration of the general end that now approacheth 12 and comforteth them against persecution FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same minde for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 4 Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 7 But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 8 And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for * Pr. 1â— 12 charity ‖ Or will shall cover the multitude of sins 9 * Rom. 12.13 Heb. 13.2 Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10 * Rom. 12.6 As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 11 If any man speak let him speak as the oracles of God if any man minister let him do it as of the ability which God giveth that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever Amen 12 Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you as though some strange thing happened unto you 13 But rejoyce in as much as ye are partakers or Christs sufferings that when his glory shall be revealed ye may be glad also with exceeding joy 14 * Mat. â— 11 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ happy are ye for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you on their part he is evil spoken of but on your part he is glorified 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or as a thief or as an evil-doer or as a busie-body in other mens matters 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian let him not be ashamed but let him glorifie God on this behalf 17 For the time is come that judgement must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God 18 * Pr. 11.31 And if the righteous scarcely be saved where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well-doing as unto a faithful Creatour CHAP. III. 1 The cruelty of the princes 6 The falshood of the prophets 8 The security of them both ANd I said Hear I pray you O heads of Jacob and ye princes of the house of Israel Is it not for you to know judgement 2 Who hate the good and love the evil who pluck off their skin from off them and their flesh from off their bones 3 Who also eat the flesh of my people and sley their skin from off them and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron 4 Then shall they cry unto the LORD but he will not hear them he will even hide his face from them at that time as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings 5 ¶ Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err that * Ch. 2.11 bite with their teeth and cry Peace and he that putteth not into their mouths they even prepare war against him 6 Therefore night shall be unto you †Heb. from a vision that ye shall not have a vision and it shall be dark unto you †Heb. from divining that ye shall not divine and the sun shall go down over the prophets and the day shall be dark over them 7 Then shall the seers be ashamed and the diviners confounded yea they shall all cover their †Heb. upper lip lips for there is no answer of God 8 ¶ But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD and of judgement and of might to declare unto Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin 9 Hear this I pray you ye heads of the house of Jacob and princes of the house of Israel
that abhor judgement and pervert all equity 10 They build up Zion with * Ezek. 12 2â— Zeph. 3.3 †Heb. blouds bloud and Jerusalem with iniquity 11 The heads thereof judge for reward and the priests thereof teach for hire and the prophets thereof divine for money yet will they lean upon the LORD †Heb. saying and say Is not the LORD among us none evil can come upon us 12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be * Jer. 26.18 plowed as a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest CHAP. IV. 1 The glory 3 peace 8 kingdom 11 and victory of the church BUt * Isa 2 2 c. in the last days it shall come to pass that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains and it shall be exalted above the hills and people shall flow unto it 2 And many nations shall come and say Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD and to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths for the law shall go forth of Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem 3 ¶ And he shall judge among many people and rebuke strong nations afar off and they shall beat their swords into * Is 2.4 Joel 3.10 plow-shares and their spears into ‖ Or sithes pruning-hooks nation shall not lift up a sword against nation neither shall they learn war any more 4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig-tree and none shall make them afraid for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it 5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever 6 In that day saith the LORD will I assemble her that halteth and I will gather her that is driven out and her that I have afflicted 7 And I will make her that * Zeph. 3.19 halted a remnant and her that was cast far off a strong nation and the LORD * Dan. 7.14 Luk. 1.33 shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth even for ever 8 ¶ And thou O towre of the flock the strong hold of the daughter of Zion unto thee shall it come even the first dominion the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem 9 Now why dost thou cry out aloud is there no king in thee is thy counsellour perished for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail 10 Be in pain and labour to bring forth O daughter of Zion like a woman in travail for now shalt thou go forth out of the city and thou shalt dwell in the field and thou shalt go even to Babylon there shalt thou be delivered there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies 11 ¶ Now also many nations are gathered against thee that say Let her be defiled and let our eye look upon Zion 12 But they know not the thoughts of the LORD neither understand they his counsel for the shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor 13 Arise and thresh O daughter of Zion for I will make thine horn iron and I will make thy hoofs brass and thou shalt beat in pieces many people and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth CHAP. V. 1 The birth of Christ 4 His kingdom 8 His conquest NOw gather thy self in troups O daughter of troups he hath laid siege against us they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek 2 But thou * Mat. 2.6 Joh. 7.42 Beth-lechem Ephratah though thou be little among the thousands of Judah yet out of thee shall be come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel whose goings forth have been from of old from †Heb. the days of eternity everlasting 3 Therefore will he give them up until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel 4 ¶ And he shall stand and ‖ Or â—ule feed in the strength of the LORD in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God and they shall abide for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth 5 And this man shall be the peace when the Assyrian shall come into our land and when he shall tread in our palace then shall we raise against him seven shepherds and eight †Heb. princes of men principal men 6 And they shall †Heb. â—at up waste the land of Assyria with the sword and the land of Nimrod ‖ Or with her own naked sworâ—â— in the entrances thereof thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian when he cometh into our land and when he treadeth within our borders 7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD as the showers upon the grass that tarrieth not for man nor waiteth for the sons of men 8 ¶ And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest as a young lion among the flocks of ‖ Or gâ—atâ— sheep who if he go through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces and none can deliver 9 Thine hand shall be lift up upon thine adversaries and all thine enemies shall be cut off 10 And it shall come to pass in that day saith the LORD that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee and I will destroy thy chariots 11 And I will cut off the cities of thy land and throw down all thy strong holds 12 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand and thou shalt have no more soothsayers 13 Thy graven images also will I cut off and thy ‖ Or statues standing images out of the midst of thee and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands 14 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee so will I destroy thy ‖ Or enemies cities 15 And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen such as they have not heard CHAP.
