nothing_o than_o in_o truth_n for_o what_o do_v they_o mean_v by_o all_o man_n subsist_v now_o of_o themselves_o be_v this_o their_o meaning_n that_o all_o man_n be_v now_o bring_v forth_o without_o generation_n or_o that_o be_v beget_v and_o bring_v forth_o by_o their_o parent_n they_o be_v arrive_v to_o those_o year_n and_o to_o that_o growth_n that_o they_o know_v how_o to_o govern_v and_o to_o uphold_v themselves_o this_o last_o will_v doubtless_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n and_o not_o the_o first_o because_o there_o be_v no_o man_n bear_v into_o this_o world_n but_o by_o generation_n which_o be_v so_o it_o be_v for_o ever_o true_a that_o though_o man_n can_v rule_v and_o govern_v themselves_o and_o in_o that_o sense_n do_v subsist_v of_o themselves_o that_o nevertheless_o every_o man_n have_v his_o beginning_n of_o be_v a_o man_n from_o his_o parent_n and_o so_o do_v continual_o remain_v a_o part_n of_o his_o parent_n with_o respect_n to_o his_o bodily_a be_v for_o if_o that_o life_n which_o he_o receive_v from_o his_o parent_n shall_v fail_v his_o body_n will_v perish_v and_o so_o adam_n be_v the_o stem_n or_o root_n from_o whence_o all_o man_n be_v descend_v and_o which_o consequent_o do_v retain_v in_o they_o continual_o a_o part_n of_o adam_n it_o be_v very_o easy_a to_o understand_v that_o when_o adam_n receive_v again_o the_o image_n of_o god_n that_o his_o posterity_n be_v thereby_o put_v into_o a_o capacity_n of_o receive_v the_o image_n of_o god_n again_o by_o virtue_n of_o their_o fellowship_n with_o adam_n beside_o when_o they_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o needful_a that_o christ_n shall_v take_v upon_o he_o the_o manhood_n of_o adam_n that_o he_o may_v restore_v unto_o all_o man_n the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n because_o there_o be_v thousand_o of_o man_n subsist_v of_o themselves_o at_o the_o time_n of_o christ_n incarnation_n i_o answer_v that_o if_o thousand_o do_v subsist_v of_o themselves_o than_o christ_n can_v not_o satisfy_v for_o they_o because_o he_o can_v not_o then_o have_v have_v any_o fellowship_n with_o they_o and_o therefore_o can_v not_o by_o his_o death_n have_v reconcile_v the_o they_o never_o be_v able_a to_o support_v or_o uphold_v one_o another_o so_o that_o the_o direction_n whereby_o our_o food_n be_v prepare_v and_o transmute_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n that_o our_o body_n be_v feed_v and_o maintain_v by_o it_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v corporeal_a but_o spiritual_a of_o which_o direction_n or_o superintendence_n we_o have_v treat_v at_o large_a in_o our_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 34.35_o 36_o 37_o 38_o 39_o and_o as_o this_o direction_n which_o superintend_v the_o nourishment_n and_o support_v of_o the_o body_n be_v spiritual_a so_o likewise_o be_v the_o guide_v and_o govern_v of_o the_o body_n spiritual_n also_o for_o as_o much_o as_o it_o proceed_v from_o the_o will_n and_o be_v immediate_o effect_v or_o execute_v in_o the_o body_n at_o the_o same_o instant_n that_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n will_n and_o think_v it_o which_o be_v a_o evident_a argument_n that_o this_o rule_n or_o governance_n must_v needs_o be_v spiritual_a and_o not_o corporeal_a for_o as_o much_o as_o not_o the_o least_o moment_n of_o time_n intervene_v between_o the_o intent_n or_o command_n of_o the_o will_n and_o its_o execution_n which_o can_v never_o be_v if_o the_o efficiency_n or_o operation_n of_o the_o will_n be_v corporeal_a but_o of_o this_o direction_n of_o the_o body_n see_v the_o foresay_a observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 91._o §_o 83._o see_v therefore_o that_o the_o property_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o corporeal_a but_o spiritual_a it_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o now_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o whatsoever_o change_v its_o form_n or_o appearance_n do_v include_v divisibility_n whereby_o the_o part_n that_o before_o be_v unite_v be_v now_o separate_v from_o one_o another_o and_o whatsoever_o be_v subject_a to_o divisibility_n must_v be_v a_o body_n because_o divisibility_n be_v the_o property_n of_o body_n which_o consist_v of_o many_o part_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o according_a to_o §_o 83._o the_o soul_n be_v a_o spirit_n therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o soul_n die_v or_o be_v divide_v or_o ever_o change_v its_o essence_n if_o any_o one_o object_n here_o that_o she_o sometime_o change_v her_o operation_n and_o by_o this_o mean_n grow_v either_o better_a or_o worse_o and_o that_o this_o change_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o die_v this_o we_o be_v very_o willing_a to_o grant_v as_o long_o as_o by_o this_o word_n change_n or_o die_v be_v not_o mean_v or_o understand_v that_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o soul_n die_v in_o like_a manner_n as_o body_n do_v but_o only_o this_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v conscious_a of_o her_o evil_a deed_n repent_v of_o and_o suffer_v for_o they_o and_o by_o this_o mean_n become_v change_v in_o her_o operation_n or_o manner_n of_o act_v all_o this_o we_o ready_o grant_v as_o have_v plain_o assert_v the_o same_o concern_v all_o life_n viz._n that_o they_o be_v meliorate_v by_o suffer_v §_o 66._o and_o in_o the_o consideration_n about_o man_n §_o 32._o in_o these_o word_n or_o that_o the_o life_n for_o a_o time_n cease_v from_o its_o operation_n of_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n by_o which_o cessation_n of_o her_o activity_n she_o either_o change_v her_o operation_n or_o bring_v forth_o better_a fruit_n than_o before_o etc._n etc._n but_o such_o a_o change_n or_o die_v as_o this_o with_o regard_n to_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o import_n that_o her_o essence_n be_v change_v or_o divide_v as_o that_o of_o body_n be_v when_o their_o form_n be_v change_v §_o 85._o and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o soul_n with_o respect_n to_o her_o essence_n be_v unchangeable_a and_o immortal_a so_o neither_o can_v she_o be_v annihilate_v because_o no_o annihilation_n can_v be_v without_o die_v see_v that_o every_o thing_n as_o long_o as_o it_o live_v have_v its_o essence_n and_o consequent_o be_v not_o annihilate_v or_o reduce_v to_o nothing_o and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o soul_n live_v continual_o according_a to_o §_o 84._o consequent_o it_o can_v be_v annihilate_v for_o see_v that_o all_o thing_n be_v ever_o present_a to_o god_n as_o in_o §_o 14._o it_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v annihilate_v because_o the_o annihilation_n of_o a_o thing_n be_v that_o whereby_o it_o cease_v to_o be_v or_o be_v the_o reduce_n of_o a_o thing_n to_o nothing_o if_o therefore_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v annihilate_v than_o all_o being_n can_v not_o be_v continual_o present_a to_o god_n but_o more_o essence_n will_v be_v present_a to_o he_o at_o one_o time_n then_o at_o another_o which_o be_v repugnant_a to_o the_o divine_a attribute_n according_a to_o §_o 14_o 15._o for_o as_o much_o therefore_o as_o all_o being_n be_v perpetual_o present_a to_o god_n if_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n can_v be_v annihilate_v moreover_o see_v that_o all_o being_n be_v in_o god_n without_o beginning_n and_o consequent_o have_v neither_o beginning_n nor_o end_v as_o have_v be_v demonstrate_v §_o 24.25_o 26._o therefore_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n have_v no_o end_n and_o when_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o essentiality_n of_o body_n can_v be_v annihilate_v though_o their_o form_n be_v change_v because_o they_o be_v not_o produce_v out_o of_o nothing_o according_a to_o §_o 27._o and_o in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 32._o how_o much_o less_o can_v the_o soul_n which_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o mutation_n as_o body_n be_v be_v a_o spirit_n be_v obnoxious_a to_o annihilation_n especial_o if_o we_o consisider_v that_o she_o be_v the_o framer_n of_o the_o body_n as_o in_o the_o foresay_a observation_n in_o §_o 37_o 38._o have_v be_v show_v for_o my_o part_n i_o confess_v that_o it_o be_v altogether_o inconceivable_a to_o i_o how_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v essential_a shall_v loose_v its_o be_v and_o become_v nothing_o and_o they_o that_o imagine_v such_o a_o thing_n do_v not_o know_v what_o annihilation_n import_v only_o they_o conceive_v that_o the_o soul_n die_v liek_v a_o body_n that_o be_v separate_v into_o its_o part_n the_o contrary_a whereof_o have_v be_v make_v out_o §_o 84._o and_o this_o be_v that_o they_o call_v annihilation_n for_o as_o to_o that_o which_o annihilation_n proper_o import_v thereof_o they_o can_v frame_v no_o image_n or_o apprehension_n for_o otherwise_o they_o will_v have_v a_o apprehension_n of_o nothing_o for_o annihilation_n signify_v the_o turn_n of_o a_o thing_n to_o nothing_o but_o some_o perhaps_o will_v say_v true_a it_o be_v that_o the_o be_v of_o a_o soul_n be_v not_o annihilate_v but_o that_o the_o soul_n when_o the_o body_n die_v return_n to_o the_o universal_a spirit_n but_o first_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o universal_a spirit_n for_o if_o thereby_o they_o understand_v the_o divine_a essence_n as_o if_o soul_n be_v a_o part_n thereof_o this_o be_v impossible_a for_o the_o reason_n allege_v §_o 4._o and_o more_o especial_o because_o the_o soul_n be_v mutable_a as_o to_o its_o thought_n will_n and_o work_n whereas_o the_o divine_a essence_n be_v unchangeable_a in_o all_o these_o as_o be_v show_v §_o 24._o if_o by_o the_o universal_a spirit_n they_o understand_v the_o essence_n of_o the_o world_n neither_o be_v that_o possible_a because_o this_o suppose_a
consequence_n that_o the_o body_n forasmuch_o as_o it_o consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n as_o the_o soul_n do_v that_o it_o may_v arrive_v to_o that_o degree_n of_o perfection_n as_o to_o become_v spiritual_a in_o the_o second_o place_n if_o so_o be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n can_v become_v corporeal_a then_o may_v all_o thing_n in_o time_n come_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o without_o any_o operation_n at_o all_o which_o can_v never_o be_v because_o god_n have_v bring_v forth_o all_o thing_n in_o order_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n must_v be_v wrought_v out_o that_o be_v bring_v forth_o to_o manifestation_n according_a to_o due_a order_n which_o can_v be_v do_v without_o activity_n and_o not_o always_o continue_v dead_a and_o deprive_v of_o all_o efficiency_n three_o if_o the_o life_n of_o every_o thing_n can_v become_v bodily_a than_o the_o creature_n may_v bring_v forth_o young_a of_o a_o different_a kind_n from_o themselves_o viz._n sheep_n may_v bring_v forth_o bird_n and_o man_n sheep_n etc._n etc._n for_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n in_o body_n but_o what_o they_o derive_v from_o their_o life_n which_o according_a to_o its_o peculiar_a efficiency_n and_o property_n do_v form_v its_o own_o body_n besides_o if_o the_o life_n of_o every_o creature_n can_v become_v corporeal_a than_o all_o of_o they_o will_v have_v the_o same_o flesh_n and_o form_n forasmuch_o as_o they_o partake_v of_o the_o same_o nourishment_n but_o nature_n teach_v we_o the_o contrary_a viz._n that_o each_o kind_n have_v its_o own_o form_n and_o flesh_n whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o each_o kind_n do_v unchangeable_o retain_v its_o own_o life_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 33._o but_o some_o will_v object_v if_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o life_n of_o other_o creature_n be_v derive_v what_o perfection_n then_o have_v man_n more_o than_o they_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o all_o life_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n yet_o do_v they_o differ_v in_o their_o efficiency_n and_o perfection_n for_o all_o creature_n have_v not_o the_o same_o understanding_n and_o wisdom_n and_o what_o creature_n have_v more_o wisdom_n than_o man_n who_o can_v rule_v all_o creature_n beside_o man_n have_v this_o prerogative_n also_o above_o all_o creature_n who_o be_v make_v according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n of_o which_o see_v chapter_n second_o and_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 46.47_o etc._n etc._n §_o 91._o see_v therefore_o that_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n with_o the_o body_n whence_o may_v be_v understand_v that_o the_o soul_n can_v work_v on_o the_o body_n so_o from_o the_o same_o head_n we_o may_v gather_v how_o the_o soul_n my_o become_v sinful_a as_o shall_v be_v show_v when_o we_o come_v to_o treat_v of_o the_o fall_n of_o man._n only_o thus_o much_o i_o shall_v say_v here_o by_o the_o by_o that_o it_o will_v be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n ever_o to_o make_v out_o how_o the_o â—oul_n be_v become_v sinful_a save_v only_o by_o this_o way_n and_o because_o man_n know_v little_a of_o the_o nature_n and_o essence_n of_o thing_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o torment_v and_o vex_v themselves_o with_o that_o old_a and_o long_o bandy_v question_n how_o or_o by_o what_o mean_v the_o soul_n be_v become_v sinful_a §_o 92._o but_o some_o perhaps_o will_v query_n see_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v become_v sinful_a by_o what_o mean_n can_v she_o be_v deliver_v from_o sin_n to_o which_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v meliorate_v by_o recover_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n as_o have_v be_v show_v at_o large_a §_o 61.62_o 63._o etc._n etc._n the_o mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o melioration_n and_o recover_v the_o image_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v show_v in_o the_o sequel_n §_o 93._o and_o because_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v in_o order_n to_o the_o full_a elucidation_n of_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o soul_n and_o whither_o they_o pass_v after_o death_n we_o will_v put_v off_o the_o handle_n this_o question_n to_o that_o part_n wherein_o we_o intend_v to_o treat_v of_o the_o restitution_n of_o a_o sinner_n chap._n v._o of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o principle_n whereof_o it_o do_v consist_v together_o with_o the_o state_n of_o adam_n before_o the_o fall_n §_o 94._o we_o have_v show_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o body_n be_v produce_v as_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o body_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n whereof_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o that_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o proper_a life_n over_o and_o above_o its_o be_v govern_v by_o the_o soul_n or_o its_o principal_a spirit_n for_o when_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n do_v cease_v from_o its_o former_a operation_n and_o that_o the_o body_n thereupon_o die_v yet_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o these_o dead_a body_n afterward_o turn_v to_o worm_n etc._n etc._n yea_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o sometime_o the_o hair_n and_o nail_n of_o a_o dead_a body_n do_v grow_v which_o prove_v that_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n beside_o the_o soul_n or_o general_a life_n which_o uphold_v the_o body_n in_o its_o form_n or_o essence_n as_o long_o as_o she_o continue_v in_o her_o former_a work_v or_o efficiency_n §_o 95._o but_o some_o will_v ask_v why_o since_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n man_n do_v notwithstanding_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o soul_n or_o life_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o i_o desire_v the_o enquirer_n to_o consider_v that_o man_n body_n be_v feed_v by_o the_o creature_n he_o enjoy_v and_o partake_v of_o the_o life_n of_o they_o which_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n if_o it_o be_v not_o transmute_v in_o man_n so_o as_o to_o comply_v with_o the_o operation_n or_o efficiency_n of_o man_n it_o can_v never_o be_v of_o use_n for_o the_o support_n or_o preservation_n of_o man._n to_o the_o end_n therefore_o that_o the_o creature_n and_o their_o life_n may_v be_v for_o the_o sustenance_n of_o the_o body_n of_o man_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v his_o own_o life_n and_o that_o the_o say_a life_n shall_v be_v master_n and_o dispose_v of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n according_a to_o its_o pleasure_n as_o a_o general_n govern_v and_o command_v his_o whole_a army_n wherefore_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o soul_n or_o life_n that_o may_v superintend_v rule_n and_o govern_v all_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o his_o body_n of_o the_o soul_n or_o central_n spirit_n have_v be_v treat_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man._n §_o 33.51_o §_o 96._o these_o principle_n now_o whereof_o the_o body_n and_o all_o creature_n whether_o corporeal_a or_o spiritual_a do_v consist_v can_v be_v no_o more_o than_o two_o that_o be_v neither_o three_o nor_o four_o for_o nothing_o be_v produce_v in_o the_o whole_a universe_n but_o from_o two_o different_a nature_n as_o we_o sun_n water_n earth_n dung_n etc._n etc._n may_v be_v apply_v to_o plant_n and_o tree_n yet_o will_v the_o sun_n the_o water_n earth_n and_o dung_n be_v find_v to_o consist_v only_o of_o these_o two_o principle_n if_o they_o be_v resolve_v into_o their_o part_n so_o that_o these_o will_v never_o constitute_v a_o three_o principle_n essential_o differ_v from_o the_o two_o former_a §_o 97._o these_o two_o principle_n whereof_o all_o creature_n consist_v be_v fire_n and_o water_n and_o that_o all_o animal_n and_o vegetable_n consist_v of_o a_o fiery_a essence_n experience_n teach_v we_o in_o that_o they_o can_v be_v burn_v for_o the_o fire_n that_o we_o make_v to_o warm_v ourselves_o by_o which_o be_v the_o fire_n of_o the_o creature_n mention_v in_o our_o consideration_n concern_v man_n §_o 14._o must_v continual_o be_v maintain_v with_o wood_n etc._n etc._n or_o else_o it_o will_v cease_v to_o burn_v wherefore_o that_o which_o be_v lay_v upon_o the_o fire_n for_o fuel_n must_v have_v a_o fire_n in_o it_o which_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v excite_v yea_o it_o will_v be_v altogether_o impossible_a to_o make_v any_o thing_n burn_v if_o it_o have_v not_o a_o fiery_a essence_n in_o it_o that_o the_o creature_n have_v a_o fire_n in_o they_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 9_o
etc._n etc._n §_o 98._o and_o as_o all_o creature_n have_v a_o fire_n in_o they_o so_o their_o bodily_a principle_n be_v water_n for_o the_o last_o thing_n into_o which_o body_n can_v be_v resolve_v
