now_o than_o before_o since_o man_n be_v now_o by_o virtue_n of_o water-baptism_n as_o a_o necessary_a consequence_n of_o it_o no_o more_o than_o before_o make_v inward_o clean_a and_o if_o some_o by_o god_n grace_n that_o be_v baptize_v with_o water_n be_v inward_o purify_v so_o be_v some_o also_o under_o the_o law_n so_o that_o this_o be_v not_o any_o necessary_a consequence_n nor_o effect_n neither_o of_o this_o nor_o that_o baptism_n it_o be_v then_o plain_o repugnant_a to_o right_a reason_n as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o scripture-testimony_n to_o affirm_v that_o to_o be_v a_o spiritual_a positive_o affirm_v it_o to_o have_v be_v it_o remain_v a_o carnal_a ordinance_n still_o and_o if_o a_o carnal_a ordinance_n than_o no_o necessary_a part_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o new_a their_o carnal_a apprehension_n and_o natural_a sense_n but_o we_o on_o the_o contrary_a travel_n above_o all_o to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o and_o cleave_v unto_o the_o light_n of_o the_o glorious_a gospel_n reveal_v unto_o we_o and_o the_o harmony_n of_o the_o truth_n we_o profess_v gospel_n in_o this_o may_v appear_v by_o brief_o observe_v how_o in_o all_o thing_n we_o follow_v the_o be_v outward_a write_v in_o table_n of_o stone_n and_o parchment_n so_o also_o be_v that_o of_o our_o adversary_n but_o the_o law_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v inward_a and_o perpetual_a write_v ordinance_n of_o the_o gospel_n than_o the_o apostle_n paul_n will_v have_v be_v send_v to_o administer_v it_o but_o he_o declare_v positive_o 1_v cor._n 1._o 17._o that_o christ_n send_v he_o not_o to_o baptise_v but_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n the_o reason_n of_o that_o consequence_n be_v undeniable_a because_o the_o apostle_n paul_n commission_n be_v as_o large_a as_o that_o of_o any_o of_o they_o and_o consequent_o he_o be_v in_o special_a manner_n the_o apostle_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o gentile_n if_o water-baptism_n as_o our_o adversary_n contend_v be_v jew_n to_o be_v account_v the_o badge_n of_o christianity_n he_o have_v more_o need_n than_o any_o of_o the_o rest_n to_o be_v send_v to_o baptize_v with_o water_n that_o he_o may_v mark_v the_o gentile_n convert_v by_o he_o with_o that_o christian_a sign_n but_o indeed_o the_o reason_n hold_v better_a thus_o that_o since_o paul_n be_v the_o apostle_n of_o the_o gentile_n and_o that_o in_o his_o ministry_n he_o do_v through_o all_o as_o by_o his_o epistle_n appear_v labour_v to_o wean_v they_o from_o the_o former_a jewish_a ceremony_n and_o observation_n though_o in_o so_o do_v he_o be_v sometime_o undeserved_o judge_v by_o other_o of_o his_o brethren_n who_o be_v unwilling_a to_o lay_v aside_o those_o ceremony_n therefore_o his_o commission_n though_o as_o full_a as_o to_o the_o preach_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o new_a covenant-dispensation_n as_o that_o of_o the_o other_o apostle_n do_v not_o require_v of_o he_o that_o he_o shall_v lead_v those_o convert_v into_o such_o jewish_a observation_n and_o kind_n partly_o borrow_v from_o gentile_n the_o jew_n which_o they_o more_o tenacious_o stick_v to_o and_o more_o earnest_o contend_v for_o than_o for_o the_o weighty_a point_n of_o christianity_n because_o that_o self_n yet_o alive_a and_o rule_v in_o they_o love_v their_o own_o invention_n better_a than_o god_n command_n but_o if_o they_o can_v by_o any_o mean_n stretch_v any_o prejudice_n of_o education_n and_o the_o love_n of_o self_n more_o than_o of_o god_n or_o his_o pure_a worship_n this_o be_v verify_v concern_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v call_v sacrament_n about_o which_o they_o controversy_n be_v very_o ignorant_a in_o religious_a controversy_n who_o understand_v not_o how_o much_o debate_n contention_n jangle_v and_o quarrel_v there_o have_v be_v among_o those_o call_a christian_n so_o that_o i_o may_v safe_o say_v the_o controversy_n about_o they_o to_o wit_n about_o their_o number_n nature_n virtue_n efficacy_n administration_n and_o other_o thing_n have_v be_v more_o than_o about_o any_o other_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n whether_o as_o betwixt_o papist_n and_o protestant_n or_o among_o protestant_n betwixt_o themselves_o and_o how_o great_a prejudice_n these_o controversy_n have_v bring_v to_o christian_n be_v very_o obvious_a whereas_o the_o thing_n contend_v for_o among_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n but_o empty_a shadow_n and_o mere_a outside_n thing_n as_o i_o hope_v hereafter_o to_o make_v appear_v to_o the_o patient_a and_o unprejudicate_a reader_n §_o ii_o that_o which_o come_v first_o under_o observation_n be_v the_o name_n sacrament_n which_o heathen_n be_v strange_a that_o christian_n shall_v stick_v to_o and_o contend_v so_o much_o for_o since_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o all_o the_o scripture_n but_o be_v borrow_v from_o the_o military_a oath_n among_o the_o heathen_n from_o who_o the_o christian_n when_o they_o begin_v to_o apostatise_v do_v borrow_v many_o superstitious_a term_n and_o observation_n that_o they_o may_v thereby_o ingratiate_v themselves_o and_o the_o more_o easy_o gain_v the_o heathen_n to_o their_o religion_n which_o practice_n though_o perhaps_o aside_o this_o traditional_a term_n and_o betake_v we_o to_o plainness_n of_o scripture-language_n for_o present_o the_o great_a contest_v about_o the_o number_n of_o they_o will_v evanish_v see_v there_o be_v no_o term_n use_v in_o scripture_n that_o can_v be_v make_v use_n of_o whether_o we_o call_v they_o institution_n ordinance_n precept_n commandment_n appointment_n or_o law_n etc._n etc._n that_o will_v afford_v ground_n for_o such_o a_o debate_n since_o neither_o papist_n will_v affirm_v that_o there_o be_v only_o seven_o or_o protestant_n only_o two_o of_o any_o of_o these_o foremention_v obj._n 2_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o this_o controversy_n arise_v from_o the_o definition_n of_o the_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o name_n obj._n 1_o it_o will_v be_v find_v otherwise_o for_o whatever_o way_n we_o take_v their_o definition_n of_o a_o sacrament_n thing_n whether_o as_o a_o outward_a visible_a sign_n whereby_o inward_a grace_n be_v confer_v or_o only_o signify_v this_o definition_n will_v agree_v to_o many_o thing_n which_o neither_o papist_n nor_o protestant_n will_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v sacrament_n if_o they_o be_v express_v under_o the_o name_n of_o seal_v ordinance_n as_o some_o do_v i_o can_v never_o see_v neither_o by_o reason_n nor_o scripture_n how_o this_o title_n can_v be_v appropriate_a to_o they_o more_o than_o to_o any_o other_o christian_n religious_a performance_n for_o that_o must_v needs_o proper_o be_v a_o seal_v ordinance_n mean_a which_o make_v the_o person_n receive_v it_o infallible_o certain_a of_o the_o wash_v heart_n with_o water_n that_o make_v the_o heart_n clean_o by_o which_o man_n be_v fit_v for_o heaven_n and_o as_o that_o which_o go_v into_o the_o mouth_n do_v not_o defile_v a_o man_n in_o general_n may_v serve_v for_o a_o introduction_n not_o only_o to_o this_o proposition_n but_o also_o to_o the_o other_o concern_v the_o supper_n of_o these_o sacrament_n so_o call_v baptism_n be_v always_o first_o number_v which_o be_v the_o subject_a of_o the_o present_a proposition_n in_o who_o explanation_n i_o shall_v first_o demonstrate_v and_o prove_v our_o judgement_n and_o then_o answer_v the_o objection_n and_o refute_v the_o sentiment_n of_o our_o opposer_n part_v i_o as_o to_o the_o first_o part_n these_o thing_n follow_v which_o be_v brief_o comprehend_v in_o the_o proposition_n come_v to_o be_v propose_v and_o prove_v prop._n i_o §_o iii_o first_o that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o baptism_n as_o well_o as_o but_o one_o lord_n one_o faith_n etc._n etc._n second_o
