shall_v be_v leave_v under_o a_o unavoidable_a necessity_n either_o of_o admit_v all_o inspiration_n which_o pretend_v to_o be_v divine_a or_o of_o reject_v all_o that_o be_v true_o so_o as_o to_o instance_n in_o this_o case_n of_o prayer_n we_o know_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o have_v the_o matter_n and_o word_n of_o it_o dictate_v to_o they_o by_o a_o natural_a or_o diabolical_a fast_o into_o it_o and_o appear_v more_o distinct_a in_o it_o and_o consequent_o produce_v a_o very_a ready_a invention_n of_o matter_n and_o extraordinary_a fluency_n of_o word_n so_o that_o if_o under_o a_o fit_a of_o this_o natural_a fervency_n a_o man_n fancy_n happen_v to_o run_v upon_o god_n and_o religion_n he_o can_v fail_v to_o pray_v with_o great_a readiness_n and_o fluency_n and_o sometime_o with_o that_o extraordinary_a passion_n and_o enlargement_n as_o shall_v cause_v he_o assure_o to_o believe_v himself_o immediate_o inspire_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o which_o instance_n enough_o may_v be_v give_v not_o only_o among_o christian_n but_o also_o among_o the_o devoto_n of_o mahomet_n and_o the_o poet_n and_o orator_n of_o the_o heathen_n who_o fancy_n have_v be_v very_o often_o so_o strange_o exalt_v by_o the_o fervour_n of_o their_o temper_n or_o disease_n that_o not_o only_o they_o themselves_o but_o they_o that_o hear_v they_o teacher_n to_o the_o world_n it_o be_v very_o reasonable_a to_o suppose_v that_o this_o subtle_a agent_n who_o so_o thorough_o understand_v his_o own_o game_n will_v in_o some_o case_n be_v forward_o enough_o to_o do_v it_o and_o if_o in_o any_o case_n we_o may_v reasonable_o suppose_v that_o the_o devil_n may_v inspire_v man_n with_o such_o matter_n of_o prayer_n as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o scripture_n than_o we_o can_v never_o certain_o distinguish_v by_o scripture_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o the_o devil_n that_o inspire_v we_o and_o can_v we_o without_o blaspheme_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n imagine_v that_o if_o he_o have_v continue_v this_o gift_n of_o immediate_a inspiration_n to_o we_o he_o will_v have_v neglect_v to_o continue_v such_o sign_n and_o testimony_n of_o it_o as_o be_v necessary_a to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o devil_n doubtless_o it_o be_v much_o better_a for_o we_o that_o this_o gift_n shall_v be_v total_o withdraw_v and_o that_o as_o to_o the_o matter_n and_o expression_n of_o our_o prayer_n we_o shall_v be_v leave_v to_o the_o guidance_n of_o scripture_n and_o reason_n than_o that_o by_o the_o continuance_n of_o it_o without_o some_o certain_a sign_n to_o know_v and_o distinguish_v it_o we_o shall_v be_v leave_v under_o a_o fatal_a necessity_n either_o of_o reject_v divine_a inspiration_n or_o of_o admit_v diabolical_a for_o divine_a and_o therefore_o since_o we_o have_v no_o such_o sign_n continue_v among_o we_o we_o have_v all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n to_o conclude_v that_o this_o gift_n be_v discontinue_v and_o cease_v especial_o consider_v that_o we_o have_v not_o only_o no_o certain_a sign_n of_o any_o such_o inspiration_n in_o the_o conceive_a prayer_n of_o those_o which_o most_o pretend_v to_o it_o but_o many_o very_a certain_a one_o of_o the_o contrary_a i_o will_v instance_n in_o sour_a 1._o the_o great_a impertinence_n and_o nonsense_n and_o rudeness_n to_o say_v no_o worse_o that_o be_v sometime_o mingle_v with_o these_o extempore_o prayer_n i_o will_v not_o give_v instance_n of_o this_o because_o it_o be_v so_o notorious_a that_o our_o brethren_n themselves_o can_v but_o in_o part_n acknowledge_v it_o now_o to_o attribute_v these_o fault_n of_o conceive_a prayer_n to_o immediate_a inspiration_n will_v be_v to_o blaspheme_v the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o father_n our_o own_o folly_n upon_o he_o and_o yet_o sure_o have_v he_o think_v meet_v to_o have_v continue_v to_o the_o church_n this_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n of_o prayer_n it_o will_v have_v be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o secure_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n from_o those_o rudeness_n and_o indecency_n to_o which_o extemporary_a prayer_n of_o man_n own_o conceive_n be_v liable_a and_o if_o so_o to_o be_v sure_a in_o public_a prayer_n at_o least_o he_o will_v have_v constant_o take_v care_n to_o inspire_v such_o matter_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n and_o such_o expression_n as_o be_v fit_a for_o such_o matter_n that_o so_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o most_o serious_a and_o solemn_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n may_v not_o be_v render_v ridiculous_a by_o the_o folly_n and_o inadvertency_n of_o man_n whereas_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o see_v those_o public_a prayer_n which_o arrogate_v to_o themselves_o the_o honour_n of_o be_v inspire_v be_v general_o more_o liable_a to_o these_o indecency_n than_o form_n of_o humane_a composure_n and_o that_o those_o prayer_n which_o consist_v of_o premeditate_a matter_n and_o word_n be_v common_o much_o better_a sense_n and_o far_o more_o decent_a and_o pertinent_a than_o our_o extemporary_a effusion_n which_o how_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v i_o know_v not_o suppose_v the_o continuance_n of_o inspiration_n of_o prayer_n unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v that_o humane_a composure_n may_v exceed_v divine_a inspiration_n and_o that_o man_n may_v ordinary_o premeditate_v better_a prayer_n than_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n inspire_v and_o methinks_v it_o seem_v very_o strange_a that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v continue_v this_o gift_n of_o inspiration_n to_o secure_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n from_o nonsense_n and_o impertinence_n and_o yet_o that_o after_o all_o it_o shall_v remain_v more_o liable_a to_o thâ—se_a indecency_n than_o if_o our_o public_a prayer_n be_v offer_v up_o in_o premeditate_a form_n compose_v out_o of_o our_o own_o or_o other_o man_n invention_n 2._o another_o sign_n that_o our_o compose_a prayer_n be_v not_o immediate_o inspire_v be_v that_o they_o be_v so_o general_o tincture_v with_o the_o particular_a opinion_n of_o those_o that_o offer_v they_o you_o may_v observe_v that_o in_o all_o public_a controversy_n of_o religion_n man_n opinion_n be_v general_o to_o be_v know_v by_o their_o prayer_n especial_o if_o they_o zealous_o espouse_v either_o side_n of_o the_o question_n for_o then_o the_o debate_n run_v so_o much_o in_o their_o head_n and_o they_o look_v upon_o god_n and_o religion_n so_o very_o high_o concern_v in_o it_o that_o they_o can_v hardly_o frame_v a_o petition_n confession_n or_o thanksgiving_n without_o give_v some_o intimation_n of_o their_o particular_a persuasion_n and_o many_o time_n one_o of_o the_o petition_n be_v that_o god_n will_v hinder_v the_o propagation_n of_o the_o contrary_a persuasion_n and_o convince_v their_o adversary_n

they_o grow_v more_o ready_a and_o fluent_a which_o how_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v i_o know_v not_o suppose_v the_o prayer_n be_v inspire_v unless_o perhaps_o the_o spirit_n come_v in_o only_a in_o the_o middle_n or_o towards_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o their_o prayer_n but_o leave_v they_o to_o their_o own_o invention_n in_o the_o beginning_n and_o what_o reason_n there_o shall_v be_v for_o such_o a_o imagination_n i_o confess_v i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o guess_v the_o true_a account_n therefore_o of_o the_o matter_n be_v this_o that_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o prayer_n their_o spirit_n be_v usual_o dull_a and_o sluggish_a and_o do_v not_o flow_v and_o reflow_v so_o brisk_o to_o their_o head_n and_o heart_n as_o afterward_o when_o they_o have_v be_v thorough_o chafe_v and_o copious_a fluent_a and_o easy_a so_o that_o mere_o by_o the_o law_n of_o matter_n and_o motion_n as_o plain_a a_o account_n may_v be_v give_v of_o this_o extemporary_a fluency_n and_o enlargement_n of_o prayer_n as_o of_o any_o other_o natural_a effect_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o for_o our_o brethren_n to_o attribute_v to_o the_o immediate_a inspiration_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o which_o have_v such_o apparent_a sign_n of_o its_o derivation_n from_o natural_a cause_n be_v i_o conceive_v very_o unwarrantable_a by_o all_o which_o i_o think_v it_o be_v very_o evident_a thanksgiving_n for_o mercy_n for_o in_o these_o divine_a and_o gracious_a affection_n the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o prayer_n consist_v as_o for_o the_o word_n and_o expression_n of_o it_o about_o which_o our_o brethren_n disagree_v with_o we_o they_o be_v of_o no_o other_o account_n with_o god_n than_o as_o they_o signify_v to_o he_o the_o grace_n and_o affection_n of_o our_o prayer_n without_o which_o he_o regard_v they_o no_o more_o than_o he_o do_v the_o whistle_n of_o the_o wind_n and_o therefore_o since_o these_o affection_n be_v the_o main_a of_o our_o prayer_n and_o word_n be_v nothing_o in_o his_o account_n in_o comparison_n with_o they_o can_v any_o man_n be_v so_o vain_a as_o to_o imagine_v that_o those_o affection_n will_v be_v ever_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o acceptable_a to_o he_o because_o they_o be_v present_v in_o a_o form_n of_o word_n and_o not_o in_o extemporary_a effusion_n sure_o that_o father_n will_v be_v very_o capricious_a that_o shall_v deny_v bread_n to_o his_o hungry_a child_n mere_o because_o he_o ask_v it_o to_o day_n in_o the_o same_o word_n that_o he_o do_v yesterday_o and_o to_o imagine_v that_o god_n will_v dislike_v or_o
