he_o can_v natural_o do_v water_n you_o know_v of_o itself_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n in_o it_o so_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o that_o be_v whether_o you_o have_v new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v experience_n that_o be_v yet_o want_v of_o power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v power_n withal_o to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v and_o use_v those_o habit_n that_o be_v in_o they_o

strength_n but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v here_o mean_v second_o there_o be_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n and_o this_o be_v two_o fold_n the_o first_o be_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n which_o be_v receive_v from_o the_o evil_a spirit_n which_o be_v when_o satan_n shall_v join_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n and_o add_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n and_o so_o make_v he_o to_o do_v more_o or_o suffer_v more_o than_o otherwise_o by_o nature_n he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v with_o this_o spirit_n be_v all_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o church_n strengthen_v paul_n strong_a build_v or_o general_o strong_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o leak_n in_o it_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o part_n because_o it_o have_v that_o in_o it_o which_o will_v at_o last_o destroy_v it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o christian_a if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o leak_n that_o be_v a_o weakness_n in_o one_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n he_o be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n therefore_o a_o man_n must_v take_v heed_n of_o all_o weakness_n though_o a_o man_n may_v be_v general_o strong_a that_o he_o be_v not_o weak_a in_o some_o thing_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v these_o the_o first_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o 1._o inner_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o will_v fit_v we_o for_o many_o employment_n that_o be_v it_o will_v make_v we_o go_v through_o much_o work_n with_o great_a ease_n to_o perform_v the_o weighty_a duty_n in_o religion_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o otherwise_o we_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v and_o this_o shall_v persuade_v man_n the_o rather_o to_o pray_v earnest_o for_o this_o because_o god_n for_o god_n and_o that_o with_o great_a strength_n and_o this_o shall_v make_v man_n to_o beg_v the_o spirit_n because_o he_o work_v in_o we_o effectual_o to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o we_o in_o the_o honour_n credit_n and_o this_o be_v all_o the_o strength_n that_o most_o man_n desire_v what_o good_a will_v these_o do_v when_o you_o come_v to_o wrestle_v with_o sin_n and_o death_n yet_o man_n be_v violent_a after_o these_o but_o to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n who_o seek_v or_o inquire_v after_o it_o i_o know_v every_o man_n desire_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o earthly_a strength_n but_o i_o beseech_v you_o above_o all_o thing_n labour_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o be_v the_o folly_n weakness_n and_o sickness_n of_o man_n they_o look_v all_o without_o door_n and_o upon_o outward_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o they_o seldom_o or_o never_o look_v within_o at_o all_o that_o be_v to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n oh_o that_o i_o can_v persuade_v you_o as_o i_o say_v before_o to_o gather_v up_o your_o thought_n and_o desire_n together_o and_o set_v the_o soul_n in_o assurance_n of_o grace_n that_o you_o may_v mortify_v these_o inordinate_a affection_n which_o keep_v back_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o covetousness_n pride_n pleasure_n self-love_n vain_a glory_n and_o the_o like_a then_o it_o will_v be_v a_o easy_a work_n and_o no_o burden_n unto_o you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o here_o man_n stick_v the_o way_n be_v too_o narrow_a it_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o persuade_v man_n to_o it_o that_o be_v to_o make_v they_o believe_v there_o be_v such_o excellency_n in_o the_o one_o &_o not_o in_o the_o other_o that_o grace_n be_v the_o better_a part_n therefore_o that_o i_o may_v the_o better_o prevail_v with_o you_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o motive_n to_o incite_v you_o to_o it_o the_o first_o motive_n to_o move_v you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o your_o comfort_n lie_v most_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o be_v all_o your_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o to_o strengthen_v that_o be_v to_o add_v unto_o your_o comfort_n as_o for_o example_n the_o sun_n bring_v comfort_n with_o it_o because_o that_o bring_v light_a so_o the_o more_o of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o have_v the_o more_o light_a and_o joy_n now_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n bring_v the_o more_o comfort_n be_v because_o it_o be_v the_o great_a faculty_n and_o the_o great_a the_o faculty_n be_v the_o great_a be_v the_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n as_o for_o example_n take_v a_o man_n that_o be_v trouble_v in_o mind_n none_o so_o humble_a none_o so_o penitent_a none_o so_o sorrowful_a as_o he_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o a_o sound_a heart_n will_v bear_v his_o infirmity_n but_o a_o wound_a in_o these_o outward_a thing_n it_o be_v but_o according_a to_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o be_v the_o comfort_n be_v no_o more_o than_o they_o be_v esteem_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n if_o the_o inward_a man_n do_v not_o esteem_v they_o as_o worthy_a the_o rejoice_v in_o they_o will_v not_o bring_v comfort_n again_o all_o the_o pain_n and_o labour_n and_o all_o thing_n else_o you_o do_v bestow_v upon_o the_o outward_a man_n be_v but_o lose_a labour_n that_o will_v do_v no_o good_a bring_v no_o sound_a peace_n to_o the_o spirit_n and_o who_o will_v bestow_v labour_n on_o a_o vain_a thing_n but_o if_o you_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n the_o labour_n that_o you_o take_v about_o that_o will_v bring_v you_o great_a advantage_n it_o will_v arm_v you_o against_o all_o loss_n and_o cross_n and_o reproach_n and_o poverty_n that_o you_o shall_v meet_v withal_o in_o the_o world_n while_o you_o be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n again_o consider_v that_o though_o you_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o outward_a man_n yet_o you_o be_v movable_a subject_a to_o shake_v and_o fleet_v but_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o make_v a_o christian_a steadfast_a and_o immovable_a that_o be_v it_o will_v so_o establish_v the_o heart_n in_o grace_n that_o he_o will_v stand_v firm_a unto_o christ_n in_o all_o estate_n it_o be_v with_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sea_n though_o he_o strength_n of_o the_o stream_n run_v one_o way_n yet_o the_o wind_n blow_v contrary_a it_o move_v and_o stir_v and_o strive_v and_o disquiet_v it_o when_o loss_n and_o cross_n come_v they_o break_v the_o frame_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v like_o the_o firm_a ground_n let_v the_o wind_n blow_v never_o so_o violent_a yet_o it_o move_v not_o it_o stand_v fast_o again_o in_o the_o abundance_n of_o outward_a thing_n there_o be_v no_o true_a contentment_n neither_o in_o the_o want_n of_o they_o but_o where_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n be_v nothing_o 2._o but_o weakness_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o pet._n 2._o 2._o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n desire_v the_o brain_n but_o the_o spirit_n go_v no_o further_a and_o descend_v no_o low_a that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o sanctify_v that_o knowledge_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n again_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o experimental_a which_o be_v a_o operative_a knowledge_n and_o go_v along_o with_o this_o other_o knowledge_n and_o bend_v it_o to_o sanctification_n and_o be_v practical_a but_o yet_o you_o must_v know_v i_o say_v before_o you_o can_v be_v strong_a there_o must_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n as_o for_o example_n one_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v fat_a and_o lusty_a another_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v still_o lean_a so_o some_o have_v as_o much_o as_o other_o have_v and_o yet_o be_v not_o so_o strong_a as_o other_o and_o yet_o we_o say_v not_o but_o as_o the_o lean_a man_n be_v strengthen_v by_o the_o meat_n he_o eat_v so_o he_o that_o have_v weak_a knowledge_n be_v strengthen_v by_o it_o but_o where_o the_o lord_n work_v by_o his_o spirit_n the_o great_a knowledge_n according_o strength_n be_v increase_v therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o labour_n for_o a_o full_a measure_n must_v labour_v to_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o mean_n to_o be_v use_v if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v be_v diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o diligent_a make_v rich_a so_o where_o there_o be_v much_o diligence_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v much_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n no_o man_n get_v spiritual_a strength_n but_o they_o that_o be_v diligent_a and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n because_o like_o the_o sluggard_n you_o be_v not_o diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n that_o be_v you_o take_v no_o pain_n for_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o you_o get_v no_o increase_n for_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o your_o pain_n so_o be_v the_o inward_a man_n strengthen_v and_o as_o you_o use_v they_o more_o diligent_o so_o you_o find_v the_o strength_n of_o they_o more_o operative_a and_o powerful_a for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n if_o you_o be_v not_o diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o feed_v the_o body_n it_o will_v wither_v and_o consume_v away_o and_o grow_v weak_a so_o if_o you_o feed_v not_o the_o soul_n diligent_o and_o use_v the_o mean_n constant_o you_o will_v breed_v weakness_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o remiss_a and_o secure_a you_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n the_o weak_a you_o be_v it_o may_v be_v you_o think_v it_o will_v not_o weaken_v you_o to_o omit_v private_a prayer_n but_o omit_v it_o once_o and_o it_o will_v make_v you_o careless_a and_o the_o more_o you_o neglect_v it_o the_o more_o unfit_a and_o undisposed_a will_v you_o find_v yourselves_o when_o you_o will_v and_o your_o strength_n will_v abate_v or_o you_o think_v you_o may_v profane_v one_o sabbath_n or_o you_o may_v take_v your_o pleasure_n immoderate_o sometime_o but_o belove_v it_o will_v make_v you_o secure_a that_o be_v the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v in_o this_o kind_a the_o more_o he_o may_v do_v for_o this_o be_v true_a in_o every_o act_n every_o act_n incline_v a_o habit_n and_o a_o habit_n bring_v custom_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a in_o good_a thing_n the_o beginning_n of_o good_a thing_n bring_v many_o particular_a good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o can_v but_o get_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n you_o shall_v find_v a_o supply_n have_v you_o observe_v if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_v effectual_a be_v this_o you_o must_v use_v all_o rule_n the_o mean_n if_o you_o use_v but_o part_n of_o the_o mean_v you_o will_v not_o grow_v strong_a for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o the_o health_n and_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n a_o man_n will_v use_v all_o
mean_n labour_n and_o recreation_n in_o health_n for_o the_o whet_n of_o the_o faculty_n physic_n in_o sickness_n in_o a_o word_n he_o will_v use_v every_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v strengthen_v the_o body_n thus_o you_o must_v do_v for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o must_v use_v all_o mean_n as_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n prayer_n meditation_n conference_n communion_n of_o saint_n particular_a resolution_n to_o good_a or_o else_o the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a these_o be_v the_o food_n that_o the_o inward_a man_n feed_v on_o it_o be_v wîth_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o plant_n if_o you_o will_v have_v a_o plant_n to_o grow_v than_o you_o must_v set_v it_o in_o a_o good_a soil_n you_o must_v dig_v about_o it_o and_o dung_n it_o and_o water_n it_o but_o if_o you_o be_v careless_a where_o you_o set_v it_o it_o will_v not_o prosper_v and_o thrive_v even_o so_o if_o you_o do_v not_o add_v fatness_n of_o soil_n to_o the_o begin_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v if_o you_o do_v not_o use_v all_o the_o mean_n as_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n and_o prayer_n and_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a but_o wither_v and_o die_v that_o be_v you_o will_v be_v dwarf_n in_o grace_n and_o holiness_n the_o second_o rule_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_v effectual_a be_v this_o you_o must_v look_v that_o you_o perform_v holy_a duty_n strong_o rule_n for_o then_o the_o mean_n do_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n when_o they_o be_v do_v with_o strong_a affection_n that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n use_v they_o not_o remissâ—ly_a and_o cold_o for_o remiss_a action_n weaken_v the_o habit_n as_o for_o example_n take_v water_z that_o be_v exceed_o hot_a and_o put_v cold_a water_n to_o it_o and_o you_o will_v weaken_v it_o so_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o grace_n remisse_o and_o they_o will_v weaken_v the_o habit_n to_o good_a that_o be_v it_o will_v work_v a_o indisposition_n in_o the_o soul._n therefore_o do_v they_o strong_o with_o much_o zeal_n and_o fervency_n of_o affection_n that_o the_o inward_a man_n may_v grow_v strong_a by_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o the_o three_o rule_n if_o you_o will_v have_v mean_n effectual_a rule_n then_o you_o must_v be_v constant_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n for_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n there_o be_v so_o little_a thrive_a in_o grace_n that_o man_n remain_v cripple_n in_o grace_n but_o because_o they_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o grace_n but_o by_o fit_n and_o half_n that_o be_v they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o a_o good_a course_n of_o life_n they_o be_v still_o off_o and_o on_o they_o shoot_v sometime_o short_a and_o at_o other_o time_n they_o hit_v the_o mark_n that_o be_v they_o come_v seldom_o unto_o the_o mean_n now_o and_o then_o they_o pray_v and_o now_o and_o then_o they_o use_v the_o communion_n of_o saint_n now_o this_o inconstancy_n disable_v the_o faculty_n and_o weaken_v it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v impossible_a you_o shall_v thrive_v in_o grace_n except_o you_o be_v constant_a the_o apostle_n james_n call_v they_o unstable_a man_n that_o be_v let_v these_o never_o think_v to_o receive_v strength_n in_o the_o inner_a man_n till_o they_o come_v to_o more_o constancy_n in_o good_a therefore_o labour_v to_o be_v constant_a in_o prayer_n in_o hear_v in_o meditation_n in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o in_o conference_n which_o if_o you_o be_v not_o you_o will_v not_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o four_o rule_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_v effectual_a rule_n be_v this_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o depend_v on_o the_o mean_n without_o a_o eye_n to_o god_n in_o they_o for_o know_v that_o the_o mean_n without_o god_n be_v but_o as_o a_o pen_n without_o ink_n a_o pipe_n without_o water_n or_o a_o scabbard_n without_o a_o sword_n that_o be_v they_o will_v not_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n without_o god_n for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o put_v life_n in_o the_o mean_n and_o yet_o you_o must_v not_o cut_v off_o the_o pipe_n from_o the_o well_o head_n that_o be_v you_o must_v not_o depend_v upon_o god_n without_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n but_o you_o must_v use_v both_o first_o seek_v unto_o god_n and_o depend_v upon_o he_o for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o withal_o use_v the_o mean_n constant_o because_o as_o water_n be_v carry_v from_o the_o well_o head_n through_o the_o pipe_n and_o so_o from_o the_o pipe_n to_o many_o place_n so_o the_o mean_n be_v as_o pipe_n to_o convey_v grace_n unto_o the_o soul_n therefore_o use_v they_o and_o â—ut_v they_o not_o off_o by_o carelessness_n if_o you_o do_v you_o will_v cut_v off_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o three_o mean_n if_o you_o will_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n be_v you_o must_v get_v rectify_v judgement_n that_o be_v mean_n you_o must_v see_v that_o your_o judgement_n be_v right_a for_o man_n do_v deceive_v themselves_o in_o their_o judgement_n they_o think_v that_o they_o have_v strong_a judgement_n and_o that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o thing_n when_o indeed_o they_o be_v marvellous_a weak_a and_o that_o you_o may_v not_o deceive_v yourselves_o i_o will_v lay_v you_o down_o some_o sign_n of_o a_o rectify_a judgement_n the_o first_o sign_n of_o a_o rectify_a judgement_n be_v this_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o your_o constancy_n that_o be_v so_o much_o constancy_n in_o sign_n good_a and_o so_o much_o be_v your_o judgement_n rectify_v and_o on_o the_o contrary_a so_o much_o inconstancy_n and_o so_o much_o weakness_n as_o for_o example_n when_o a_o man_n have_v propound_v a_o rule_n to_o himself_o &_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o it_o it_o argue_v that_o he_o be_v weak_a in_o his_o judgement_n because_o he_o keep_v not_o close_o to_o the_o rule_n that_o be_v there_o be_v strong_a or_o more_o argument_n to_o the_o contrary_a which_o make_v he_o to_o fall_v away_o and_o not_o sit_v down_o by_o the_o rule_n that_o be_v he_o be_v pose_v because_o he_o be_v but_o weak_a in_o judgement_n as_o for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n shall_v come_v and_o proffer_v a_o man_n a_o 100_o pound_n not_o to_o leave_v such_o a_o practice_n and_o another_o man_n shall_v come_v &_o offer_v he_o two_o hundred_o pound_n to_o leave_v it_o if_o the_o man_n be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n he_o will_v be_v draw_v by_o the_o great_a reward_n though_o it_o be_v to_o his_o hurt_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v not_o be_v beat_v off_o and_o make_v to_o sit_v down_o by_o strong_a argument_n than_o you_o have_v in_o yourselves_o than_o you_o must_v get_v your_o judgement_n rectify_v which_o you_o shall_v know_v by_o your_o constancy_n in_o holy_a duty_n or_o whether_o a_o little_a profit_n or_o pleasure_n will_v draw_v you_o away_o if_o you_o do_v whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o your_o judgement_n be_v weak_a the_o second_o sign_n whereby_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o your_o judgement_n be_v rectify_v be_v this_o examine_v whether_o your_o sign_n passion_n be_v strong_a strong_a sinful_a passion_n argue_v a_o weak_a judgement_n when_o the_o passion_n of_o a_o man_n be_v strong_a it_o weaken_v the_o understanding_n and_o therefore_o paul_n in_o the_o act_v 14._o when_o they_o will_v spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v upon_o saul_n and_o he_o be_v angry_a that_o be_v his_o affection_n be_v strong_a for_o god_n glory_n and_o in_o the_o act_v 4._o 32._o after_o they_o be_v fill_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o speak_v 32._o bold_o that_o be_v they_o have_v strong_a affection_n for_o god_n glory_n and_o therefore_o the_o spirit_n be_v compare_v to_o fire_n and_o oil_n for_o fire_n that_o burn_v and_o consume_v and_o oil_n that_o mollify_v and_o soften_v so_o do_v the_o spirit_n therefore_o examine_v whether_o you_o burn_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o be_v see_v man_n that_o at_o such_o a_o time_n will_v have_v be_v hot_a and_o zealous_a where_o be_v the_o generation_n of_o these_o man_n sure_o they_o be_v all_o go_v for_o there_o be_v no_o heat_n nor_o zeal_n leave_v it_o be_v true_a we_o abound_v in_o knowledge_n that_o be_v we_o have_v the_o same_o knowledge_n that_o they_o have_v but_o we_o want_v their_o zeal_n and_o spirit_n and_o we_o have_v the_o same_o gift_n but_o we_o want_v their_o spirit_n therefore_o let_v we_o now_o show_v ourselves_o to_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v to_o have_v the_o spirit_n in_o we_o by_o our_o zeal_n against_o evil_n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o many_o holy_a man_n that_o have_v the_o object_n spirit_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o so_o hot_a and_o zealous_a against_o evil_n but_o be_v marvellous_a mild_a and_o patient_a first_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o holy_a man_n may_v have_v pit_n answ._n wherein_o they_o may_v be_v fall_v i_o say_v they_o may_v have_v dross_n as_o well_o as_o gold_n and_o hence_o they_o may_v be_v drive_v through_o a_o strong_a passion_n and_o lust_n not_o just_o to_o scale_v sin_n aright_o whence_o arise_v remissness_n and_o neglect_v both_o in_o do_v good_a show_v that_o they_o have_v zeal_n in_o they_o and_o be_v hot_a and_o lively_a to_o good_a and_o not_o dead_a in_o sin_n as_o for_o example_n this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o a_o man_n that_o be_v dead_a and_o a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n if_o strong_a water_n and_o rub_v of_o his_o joint_n do_v not_o recover_v he_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o he_o be_v dead_a so_o if_o the_o word_n will_v not_o work_v in_o you_o but_o you_o remain_v senseless_a and_o dead_a without_o spiritual_a heat_n in_o you_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v more_o than_o in_o a_o swoon_n that_o be_v you_o be_v already_o dead_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o adamant_n that_o it_o will_v not_o be_v heat_v with_o fire_n so_o i_o say_v of_o you_o if_o the_o word_n will_v not_o heat_v you_o when_o you_o be_v rub_v with_o it_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v like_o the_o adamant_n dead_a unto_o grace_n second_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o howsoever_o some_o man_n answ._n that_o be_v faithful_a be_v not_o so_o zealous_a it_o be_v true_a yet_o i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o good_a argument_n to_o say_v that_o because_o counterfeit_v drug_n and_o ware_n have_v the_o same_o send_v and_o smell_v that_o good_a ware_n have_v therefore_o they_o be_v as_o good_a or_o that_o the_o good_a ware_n have_v not_o the_o like_a it_o be_v better_a to_o say_v that_o they_o have_v the_o fame_n but_o the_o difference_n be_v in_o this_o that_o they_o have_v a_o false_a die_n and_o gloss_n upon_o they_o 〈◊〉_d soâ—l_n say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v true_a in_o he_o it_o may_v be_v false_a in_o thou_o and_o know_v also_o that_o this_o weakness_n be_v join_v with_o much_o holy_a zeal_n though_o it_o be_v not_o outward_o express_v for_o certain_o as_o where_o true_a fire_n be_v there_o be_v heat_n so_o where_o there_o be_v the_o spirit_n there_o be_v zeal_n therefore_o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v heat_n in_o you_o if_o you_o have_v not_o you_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n the_o second_o sign_n whereby_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o you_o sign_n have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n or_o no_o be_v this_o if_o you_o find_v that_o you_o be_v not_o only_o able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o you_o will_v natural_o do_v but_o you_o have_v also_o holiness_n join_v with_o it_o this_o sign_n i_o make_v of_o two_o part_n because_o a_o man_n may_v do_v many_o thing_n that_o carry_v a_o show_n above_o nature_n and_o yet_o want_v holiness_n but_o if_o they_o be_v above_o nature_n and_o then_o have_v holiness_n be_v it_o put_v another_o manner_n of_o strength_n in_o you_o by_o which_o you_o be_v able_a to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o before_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v as_o for_o example_n it_o will_v work_v in_o you_o a_o patience_n above_o a_o natural_a patience_n this_o we_o see_v in_o christ_n himself_n when_o he_o be_v crucify_v he_o open_v not_o his_o mouth_n he_o be_v like_o a_o go_v not_o home_n to_o god_n so_o thorough_o as_o they_o shall_v but_o keep_v their_o soul_n aloof_o as_o it_o be_v from_o god_n but_o without_o this_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o know_v whether_o they_o be_v elect_v or_o reprobate_n hypocrite_n or_o the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n indeed_o and_o therefore_o let_v such_o know_v it_o be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n 2_o cor._n ignorant_a of_o god_n truth_n indeed_o they_o that_o have_v not_o this_o faith_n may_v open_v a_o gap_n to_o all_o licentiousness_n but_o no_o true_a believer_n that_o have_v find_v this_o conquer_a and_o insult_a faith_n for_o he_o be_v the_o most_o fearful_a man_n of_o all_o other_o to_o commit_v sin_n and_o before_o this_o a_o man_n never_o make_v conscience_n of_o sin_n act._n 15._o 9_o and_o gift_n of_o temperance_n knowledge_n patience_n meekness_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o these_o be_v many_o time_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o
