ease_n as_o well_o as_o we_o only_o the_o devil_n tempt_v they_o and_o put_v they_o upon_o these_o way_n that_o so_o they_o may_v have_v credit_n and_o repute_n and_o be_v think_v more_o holy_a and_o great_a lover_n of_o god_n than_o other_o man_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o judge_v themselves_o better_a because_o they_o know_v they_o be_v plain_a and_o have_v no_o reserve_v in_o their_o well_o know_v for_o they_o deny_v he_o to_o be_v the_o most_o high_a god_n and_o so_o they_o seem_v to_o make_v he_o some_o demy-god_n but_o this_o only_a by_o the_o way_n by_o the_o consideration_n now_o insist_v upon_o and_o suggest_v by_o the_o apostle_n it_o plain_o appear_v that_o however_o there_o be_v legion_n of_o tempter_n or_o of_o devil_n who_o may_v tempt_v at_o the_o same_o time_n in_o several_a place_n of_o the_o world_n and_o all_o these_o temptation_n be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o devil_n or_o to_o the_o prince_n of_o devil_n because_o of_o their_o subordination_n unto_o he_o in_o such_o action_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o such_o number_n of_o these_o holy_a spirit_n who_o fill_v the_o saint_n with_o their_o presence_n all_o over_o the_o world_n at_o the_o same_o time_n no_o every_o man_n several_o as_o he_o will_v be_v not_o this_o also_o of_o like_a pregnant_a intimation_n that_o he_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o god_n for_o have_v god_n vest_v any_o such_o prerogative_n in_o any_o angel_n or_o create_v spirit_n to_o govern_v the_o world_n to_o umpire_n or_o administer_v the_o affair_n of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n after_o their_o own_o will_n and_o pleasure_n or_o and_o ministration_n of_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n as_o the_o dispose_n of_o those_o excellent_a gift_n and_o endowment_n now_o then_o he_o that_o give_v out_o and_o dispense_v these_o as_o he_o will_v and_o please_v be_v no_o creature_n no_o creature_n have_v the_o government_n of_o these_o master_n dispensation_n in_o his_o own_o hand_n and_o at_o his_o own_o disposure_n none_o but_o spirit_n will_v speak_v or_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o speak_v or_o say_v in_o secret_a unto_o they_o or_o no._n as_o a_o man_n many_o time_n and_o in_o many_o case_n listen_v and_o hearken_v not_o only_o unto_o those_o who_o he_o know_v actual_o speak_v but_o to_o understand_v whether_o there_o be_v any_o speech_n or_o voice_n stir_v or_o no_o especial_o they_o be_v wont_v to_o lie_v very_o close_o in_o their_o attention_n when_o they_o have_v reason_n to_o think_v that_o they_o who_o speech_n or_o word_n they_o be_v desirous_a to_o hear_v in_o case_n they_o do_v speak_v will_v speak_v and_o take_v this_o along_o with_o they_o in_o their_o way_n be_v you_o fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n than_o to_o lose_v the_o present_a comfort_n of_o it_o by_o turn_v their_o back_n upon_o this_o or_o any_o other_o of_o the_o command_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o second_o to_o strengthen_v your_o heart_n and_o your_o hand_n sect._n 3_o that_o they_o may_v be_v lift_v up_o together_o to_o grasshopper_n in_o comparison_n of_o we_o yet_o nevertheless_o that_o peace_n and_o that_o joy_n and_o that_o inward_a comfort_n that_o you_o shall_v have_v if_o there_o be_v no_o neglect_n of_o any_o the_o command_n of_o god_n will_v suffer_v loss_n if_o this_o be_v the_o case_n if_o any_o command_n of_o god_n be_v despise_v or_o neglect_v this_o will_v be_v as_o a_o dead_a fly_n in_o your_o box_n of_o ointment_n and_o keep_v it_o from_o make_v that_o sweet_a smell_n and_o savour_n and_o from_o come_v up_o into_o your_o nostril_n you_o will_v in_o effect_n lose_v the_o present_a lustre_n and_o beauty_n if_o not_o the_o future_a reward_n of_o all_o these_o choice_n service_n if_o you_o do_v otherwise_o now_o i_o say_v who_o will_v run_v the_o hazard_n of_o the_o loss_n of_o the_o great_a benefit_n and_o blessing_n of_o such_o great_a work_n through_o the_o neglect_n or_o non-performance_n of_o one_o who_o will_v lose_v all_o the_o joy_n peace_n and_o comfore_o of_o many_o other_o service_n and_o of_o much_o obedience_n otherwise_o exhibit_v unto_o god_n and_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n only_o to_o please_v the_o flesh_n in_o the_o neglect_n of_o one_o commandment_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o natural_a health_n of_o the_o body_n though_o a_o man_n shall_v use_v many_o mean_n for_o his_o health_n and_o strength_n yet_o if_o he_o shall_v neglect_v one_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o he_o to_o do_v as_o suppose_v a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v such_o thing_n only_o as_o will_v keep_v the_o body_n in_o good_a habit_n yet_o if_o he_o shall_v never_o sleep_v or_o if_o any_o other_o thing_n as_o necessary_a as_o these_o be_v not_o use_v in_o their_o place_n and_o season_n health_n and_o good_a habit_n and_o state_n of_o body_n will_v never_o be_v any_o man_n portion_n so_o in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n shall_v never_o find_v his_o soul_n in_o a_o comfortable_a habit_n he_o shall_v never_o
these_o high_a and_o excellent_a deportment_n of_o themselves_o in_o the_o world_n or_o as_o if_o person_n in_o any_o degree_n charitable_a do_v perform_v all_o these_o worthy_a thing_n in_o their_o perfection_n but_o that_o the_o nature_n of_o charity_n be_v such_o and_o that_o the_o mean_v vouchsafe_v by_o god_n to_o advance_v this_o grace_n in_o their_o soul_n be_v such_o that_o man_n and_o woman_n may_v be_v raise_v and_o enlarge_v in_o it_o to_o such_o a_o perfection_n or_o degree_n as_o to_o be_v in_o a_o capacity_n of_o do_v all_o these_o great_a and_o excellent_a thing_n former_o mention_v so_o when_o paul_n say_v we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o we_o cry_v abba_n father_n his_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o every_o one_o who_o receive_v this_o spirit_n in_o any_o measure_n or_o degree_n do_v actual_o thus_o cry_v or_o be_v in_o a_o present_a and_o immediate_a capacity_n to_o do_v it_o but_o that_o this_o spirit_n be_v once_o receive_v may_v be_v so_o comport_v with_o and_o entreat_v by_o man_n as_o that_o he_o will_v advance_v his_o presence_n to_o such_o a_o fullness_n or_o degree_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a by_o mean_n of_o that_o strong_a testimony_n to_o cry_v alba_n father_n this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n to_o be_v remember_v by_o the_o way_n a_o second_o thing_n sect._n 15_o be_v that_o when_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o spirit_n speak_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n witness_v with_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n i.e._n as_o we_o expound_v mighty_o fortify_v and_o strengthen_v that_o testimony_n of_o our_o own_o spirit_n in_o this_o behalf_n he_n do_v not_o suppose_v that_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n who_o be_v more_o than_o ordinary_o raise_v in_o this_o persuasion_n or_o apprehension_n of_o themselves_o i_o mean_v that_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n receive_v the_o abundance_n of_o this_o testimony_n or_o persuasion_n from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o very_o possible_a it_o be_v that_o man_n and_o woman_n who_o be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o far_o from_o it_o may_v be_v very_o strong_o and_o confident_o persuade_v that_o they_o stand_v in_o this_o relation_n unto_o god_n but_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o such_o a_o persuasion_n as_o this_o in_o such_o person_n come_v not_o either_o in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n because_o he_o never_o join_v in_o any_o testimony_n whereby_o a_o untruth_n be_v confirm_v there_o may_v be_v another_o spirit_n a_o spirit_n of_o delusion_n that_o stand_v at_o their_o right_a hand_n ready_a to_o fall_v in_o with_o they_o at_o such_o a_o turn_n as_o this_o and_o it_o be_v like_o will_v make_v their_o persuasion_n great_a within_o they_o our_o saviour_n supernatural_a too_o for_o certain_o the_o spirit_n of_o error_n and_o delusion_n which_o stand_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o sinful_a and_o unworthy_a person_n do_v suggest_v this_o unto_o they_o that_o they_o be_v the_o child_n and_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o fall_v in_o with_o they_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o if_o he_o find_v but_o the_o least_o muttering_n or_o whisper_n this_o way_n in_o such_o person_n who_o spiritual_a estate_n and_o condition_n he_o know_v much_o better_a than_o themselves_o do_v he_o will_v fall_v in_o with_o might_n and_o main_a according_a to_o his_o manner_n of_o work_v and_o operation_n to_o help_v to_o raise_v and_o fortify_v this_o persuasion_n in_o they_o he_o will_v give_v they_o of_o this_o wine_n to_o drink_v until_o their_o sense_n be_v bewitch_v and_o besot_v and_o by_o this_o mean_v their_o judgement_n and_o understanding_n bear_v they_o in_o hand_n with_o the_o high_a confidence_n that_o they_o be_v the_o only_a son_n and_o daughter_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n and_o learn_v to_o distinguish_v and_o not_o believe_v the_o confident_a testimony_n and_o assurance_n which_o some_o will_v pretend_v unto_o of_o be_v the_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o god_n we_o must_v careful_o distinguish_v between_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n himself_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o error_n and_o delusion_n who_o as_o i_o say_v do_v but_o lie_n in_o wait_n to_o hear_v the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n whisper_v who_o he_o know_v not_o to_o be_v a_o child_n of_o god_n but_o to_o be_v a_o wicked_a proud_a formal_a and_o hypocritical_a person_n and_o then_o he_o will_v fall_v in_o amain_o with_o he_o to_o strengthen_v his_o confidence_n and_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o his_o confidence_n haply_o it_o may_v be_v as_o well_o with_o he_o that_o be_v delude_v by_o satan_n as_o it_o be_v with_o he_o that_o be_v strengthen_v and_o raise_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n himself_o yet_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o and_o several_a circumstance_n that_o do_v attend_v this_o false_a persuasion_n and_o confidence_n it_o may_v easy_o be_v discern_v from_o that_o which_o be_v true_a the_o apostle_n speak_v col._n 2.18_o of_o some_o person_n that_o be_v vain_o puff_v up_o with_o their_o fleshly_a mind_n who_o heart_n be_v not_o establish_v with_o grace_n but_o with_o meat_n meaning_n that_o these_o carnal_a observation_n have_v puff_v they_o up_o with_o swell_a thought_n of_o themselves_o therefore_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v and_o remember_v that_o the_o person_n with_o who_o spirit_n the_o holy_a ghost_n join_v in_o testimony_n that_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v only_o such_o who_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n indeed_o i.e._n who_o approve_v themselves_o for_o such_o by_o a_o innocent_a blameless_a and_o fruitful_a conversation_n and_o particular_o who_o reverence_n the_o counsel_n and_o appointment_n of_o god_n in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n by_o attend_v hereupon_o from_o day_n to_o day_n if_o we_o have_v time_n we_o may_v give_v this_o item_n unto_o you_o sect._n 16_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o do_v bear_v up_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n against_o all_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o contrary_a apprehension_n and_o the_o like_a this_o spirit_n of_o their_o country_n as_o the_o decii_n among_o the_o roman_n there_o be_v two_o of_o they_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n who_o in_o several_a war_n wherein_o their_o country_n be_v in_o danger_n do_v rush_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o death_n and_o so_o curtius_n another_o roman_a who_o throw_v himself_o into_o a_o deep_a chasm_n or_o open_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o some_o among_o the_o grecian_n also_o be_v man_n of_o great_a resolution_n as_o codrus_n themistocles_n etc._n etc._n and_o do_v expose_v themselves_o to_o eminent_a and_o certain_a danger_n of_o death_n only_o for_o the_o safety_n of_o their_o country_n therefore_o such_o man_n as_o these_o be_v free_a from_o all_o torment_a fear_n and_o trouble_n but_o to_o this_o we_o answer_v first_o that_o none_o of_o these_o do_v pure_o or_o mere_o voluntary_o devote_v themselves_o unto_o death_n but_o upon_o very_o great_a occasion_n at_o least_o by_o they_o so_o apprehend_v viz._n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o their_o family_n wife_n and_o country_n so_o that_o to_o expose_v themselves_o unto_o that_o which_o they_o do_v in_o this_o be_v but_o to_o choose_v the_o lesser_a evil_n before_o the_o great_a so_o that_o all_o that_o can_v be_v make_v of_o the_o sense_n that_o those_o have_v of_o death_n be_v that_o they_o apprehend_v it_o far_o better_a and_o more_o desirable_a for_o they_o to_o lose_v their_o life_n than_o that_o their_o wife_n and_o family_n and_o country_n shall_v be_v destroy_v second_o to_o expose_v a_o man_n self_n to_o danger_n or_o unto_o a_o certain_a evil_n do_v not_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v free_a from_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o evil_a but_o only_o that_o he_o choose_v and_o prefer_v this_o evil_a before_o the_o other_o as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v under_o a_o great_a and_o eminent_a danger_n unless_o he_o attempt_v very_o desperate_o through_o if_o he_o shall_v make_v this_o attempt_n he_o be_v not_o certain_a he_o shall_v escape_v the_o danger_n he_o be_v in_o only_o he_o do_v respect_n of_o any_o object_n whatsoever_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o some_o who_o heart_n be_v as_o hard_o as_o brawn_n and_o who_o conscience_n be_v sear_v as_o with_o a_o hot_a iron_n man_n do_v seldom_o make_v trial_n of_o their_o heart_n what_o they_o can_v bring_v they_o unto_o and_o can_v hardly_o believe_v such_o a_o doctrine_n as_o this_o viz._n that_o man_n may_v bring_v their_o heart_n to_o what_o temper_n they_o please_v if_o they_o will_v follow_v mean_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o bring_v such_o a_o thing_n to_o pass_v now_o it_o be_v no_o way_n unlikely_a but_o that_o these_o at_o least_o some_o of_o they_o know_v what_o consideration_n be_v apt_a to_o make_v they_o void_a of_o fear_n they_o be_v man_n of_o part_n they_o know_v how_o to_o deport_v themselves_o so_o as_o to_o make_v themselves_o fearless_a and_o dreadless_a if_o man_n will_v attend_v only_o upon_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o excellency_n and_o renown_n and_o grandeur_n of_o man_n that_o have_v die_v on_o such_o term_n as_o of_o achilles_n epaminondas_n etc._n etc._n will_v feed_v upon_o the_o beauty_n and_o desirableness_n of_o their_o name_n and_o fame_n and_o then_o shall_v think_v that_o they_o themselves_o if_o they_o shall_v do_v such_o thing_n shall_v be_v as_o famous_a as_o they_o and_o their_o name_n shall_v live_v if_o this_o course_n shall_v be_v take_v for_o any_o considerable_a space_n of_o time_n and_o man_n shall_v but_o add_v hereunto_o other_o consideration_n which_o be_v apt_a to_o render_v their_o life_n in_o this_o world_n less_o please_v and_o less_o desirable_a no_o question_n but_o that_o they_o may_v harden_v their_o heart_n and_o stupefy_v their_o sense_n that_o they_o may_v quite_o quench_v and_o destroy_v all_o impression_n of_o fear_n which_o be_v natural_o plant_v within_o they_o towards_o such_o formidable_a object_n four_o very_o possible_o satan_n may_v stand_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o such_o person_n and_o help_v forward_o those_o who_o do_v devote_v themselves_o unto_o death_n he_o may_v blow_v the_o coal_n of_o vain_a glory_n when_o their_o heart_n begin_v to_o work_v and_o rise_v within_o they_o by_o cast_v in_o his_o incentives_n for_o we_o have_v heretofore_o show_v unto_o you_o he_o have_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o operation_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o can_v join_v with_o their_o fancy_n and_o imaginative_a power_n and_o put_v life_n into_o they_o by_o his_o injection_n this_o may_v be_v another_o mean_n by_o which_o these_o person_n may_v attain_v unto_o this_o fearlesness_n and_o dreadlesness_n of_o spirit_n five_o and_o last_o for_o this_o concern_v that_o freedom_n from_o torment_a care_n and_o fear_n if_o there_o be_v any_o among_o they_o that_o have_v part_n and_o fellowship_n in_o any_o such_o privilege_n upon_o such_o ground_n as_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n may_v afford_v they_o it_o may_v be_v think_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o the_o business_n we_o may_v safe_o say_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v be_v there_o and_o that_o it_o be_v his_o interposure_n for_o the_o book_n of_o nature_n be_v the_o book_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n though_o this_o latter_a book_n have_v more_o in_o it_o than_o the_o former_a yet_o so_o far_o as_o that_o do_v teach_v so_o far_o do_v god_n own_o
