give_v god_n his_o own_o that_o be_v what_o come_v from_o the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n or_o else_o we_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n i_o will_v give_v you_o one_o text_n further_o about_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o in_o exod._n 39_o if_o you_o read_v the_o chapter_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v ten_o time_n say_v that_o they_o do_v as_o god_n have_v command_v moses_n enough_o that_o the_o thing_n that_o we_o offer_v to_o god_n in_o his_o worship_n be_v god_n own_o be_v what_o we_o have_v warrant_n for_o out_o of_o god_n word_n but_o it_o must_v have_v the_o stamp_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n there_o be_v two_o question_n that_o he_o will_v ask_v first_o who_o require_v this_o at_o your_o hand_n but_o then_o if_o you_o can_v answer_v thus_o thou_o o_o lord_n do_v require_v it_o it_o be_v well_o but_o then_o god_n have_v another_o question_n who_o image_n and_o superscription_n be_v this_o if_o thou_o can_v not_o give_v a_o answer_n to_o that_o it_o will_v be_v reject_v too_o thou_o must_v be_v act_v by_o divine_a principle_n in_o all_o that_o thou_o do_v there_o must_v be_v the_o stamp_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o that_o which_o be_v tender_v to_o god_n else_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o open_v this_o point_n full_o will_v ask_v some_o time_n first_o therefore_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v know_v when_o our_o duty_n be_v act_v by_o our_o natural_a part_n rather_o than_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n second_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o our_o duty_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a conscience_n rather_o than_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n 1_o first_o if_o thou_o be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o change_v thy_o heart_n man_n that_o do_v perform_v duty_n by_o the_o strength_n of_o natural_a part_n they_o may_v be_v as_o large_a as_o other_o and_o speak_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o other_o but_o those_o duty_n do_v never_o change_v their_o heart_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v actd_a by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v be_v change_v into_o the_o very_a image_n of_o his_o spirit_n 2_o second_o if_o man_n be_v act_v by_o natural_a part_n they_o will_v not_o carry_v they_o through_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n but_o now_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n if_o thou_o have_v act_v by_o he_o though_o thou_o do_v meet_v with_o never_o such_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n thou_o will_v be_v carry_v through_o they_o all_o 3_o thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o this_o wherein_o do_v thou_o account_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o duty_n to_o consist_v either_o in_o thyself_o or_o other_o thou_o perform_v a_o duty_n now_o it_o may_v be_v thy_o part_n do_v act_v very_o lively_a and_o to_o thy_o credit_n and_o yet_o thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v streighten_v now_o can_v thou_o rise_v up_o with_o joy_n because_o thou_o have_v thy_o end_n at_o another_o time_n perhaps_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o trouble_v and_o break_v but_o thou_o do_v not_o express_v thyself_o so_o much_o than_o thou_o be_v discourage_v and_o when_o thou_o see_v another_o perform_v a_o duty_n if_o thou_o see_v but_o any_o fail_n in_o their_o expression_n thou_o pitche_v upon_o that_o and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o poor_a thing_n thou_o be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v a_o excellency_n in_o holy_a duty_n except_o there_o be_v a_o excellency_n of_o natural_a part_n but_o those_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o can_v find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n act_v in_o other_o though_o they_o have_v not_o such_o natural_a part_n 4_o those_o that_o be_v act_v by_o their_o natural_a part_n in_o secret_a they_o be_v less_o enlarge_v than_o they_o be_v before_o other_o a_o great_a deal_n their_o part_n act_n much_o before_o other_o but_o what_o be_v there_o between_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n 5_o they_o that_o be_v so_o act_v will_v not_o be_v very_o constant_a you_o shall_v have_v young_a one_o that_o begin_v to_o look_v towards_o religion_n their_o part_n be_v a_o little_a fresh_a and_o they_o be_v mighty_o enlarge_v in_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a for_o they_o to_o make_v use_n of_o their_o part_n but_o how_o ordinary_a it_o be_v that_o after_o a_o few_o year_n they_o be_v
that_o be_v there_o must_v not_o be_v a_o heart_n and_o a_o heart_n there_o must_v not_o be_v a_o compound_a heart_n but_o you_o must_v bring_v simple_a heart_n before_o god_n without_o any_o composition_n of_o dross_n in_o yourselves_o and_o of_o any_o kind_n of_o falseness_n but_o in_o the_o simplicity_n of_o your_o heart_n you_o must_v come_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o thus_o you_o shall_v worship_v he_o with_o such_o worship_n as_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n 2_o further_n consider_v god_n as_o he_o be_v a_o eternal_a god_n what_o suitable_a disposition_n do_v this_o require_v of_o i_o when_o i_o be_o to_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o eternal_a be_v it_o require_v this_o only_a that_o therefore_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o all_o temporal_a good_a thing_n and_o set_v upon_o that_o eternal_a good_a thou_o may_v indeed_o desire_v these_o outward_a good_a thing_n but_o in_o order_n to_o thy_o eternal_a good_a then_o further_o thou_o be_v worship_v a_o eternal_a god_n hence_o than_o whatsoever_o sin_n thou_o do_v confess_v although_o commit_v 20._o or_o 40._o year_n ago_o thou_o must_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v now_o present_o commit_v and_o be_v humble_v as_o much_o before_o the_o lord_n as_o if_o it_o be_v now_o commit_v at_o this_o present_a you_o will_v say_v why_o so_o because_o god_n be_v a_o eternal_a god_n yes_o for_o if_o i_o understand_v god_n eternity_n i_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o succession_n in_o god_n be_v therefore_o the_o sin_n that_o i_o commit_v in_o my_o youth_n if_o i_o come_v to_o confess_v they_o they_o be_v before_o god_n as_o if_o they_o be_v now_o a_o do_v in_o regard_n of_o time_n and_o therefore_o i_o must_v as_o much_o as_o i_o can_v look_v so_o upon_o they_o and_o be_v humble_v for_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v sin_n late_o commit_v many_o people_n be_v trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n the_o very_a day_n after_o they_o commit_v they_o but_o a_o little_a time_n wear_v off_o their_o trouble_n but_o if_o you_o do_v consider_v that_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o a_o eternal_a god_n than_o you_o will_v look_v upon_o your_o sin_n though_o a_o long_a time_n since_o commit_v as_o if_o they_o be_v but_o now_o do_v likewise_o there_o will_v be_v this_o require_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o god_n eternity_n you_o must_v come_v with_o such_o a_o disposition_n of_o heart_n as_o not_o to_o think_v much_o though_o what_o you_o desire_v be_v defer_v and_o not_o grant_v in_o your_o time_n when_o you_o will_v have_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o time_n that_o alter_v with_o god_n but_o a_o thousand_o year_n be_v with_o god_n as_o one_o day_n then_o that_o that_o we_o account_v long_o before_o it_o be_v do_v it_o be_v nothing_o with_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v have_v our_o heart_n so_o work_v towards_o god_n as_o towards_o a_o eternal_a god_n as_o one_o with_o who_o there_o be_v no_o alteration_n of_o time_n at_o all_o with_o who_o there_o be_v no_o succession_n of_o time_n if_o we_o come_v to_o a_o man_n and_o seek_v any_o thing_n of_o he_o if_o he_o do_v not_o answer_v we_o present_o we_o will_v think_v that_o he_o will_v forget_v it_o and_o other_o thing_n will_v come_v into_o his_o mind_n but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n we_o must_v look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o eternal_a be_v and_o that_o time_n alter_v nothing_o with_o he_o thus_o understanding_n god_n in_o a_o right_a way_n will_v much_o help_v we_o in_o his_o worship_n and_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n we_o can_v sanctify_v god_n name_n without_o know_v his_o name_n without_o have_v serious_a thought_n about_o his_o name_n and_o get_v our_o heart_n to_o work_v according_o 3_o three_o look_v upon_o god_n when_o you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o in_o his_o incomprehensible_a be_v that_o be_v as_o a_o god_n that_o fill_v all_o place_n his_o be_v be_v as_o real_a in_o the_o room_n that_o we_o be_v pray_v in_o the_o place_n that_o we_o be_v meet_v in_o as_o it_o be_v in_o heaven_n now_o then_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o that_o infinite_a glorious_a be_v stand_v before_o we_o look_v upon_o we_o be_v at_o our_o elbow_n and_o therefore_o especial_o when_o you_o worship_n in_o secret_n consider_v this_o it_o be_v good_a to_o consider_v it_o when_o you_o be_v with_o other_o but_o especial_o i_o say_v consider_v it_o when_o you_o be_v in_o secret_a and_o know_v that_o when_o you_o be_v most_o private_a you_o have_v one_o that_o look_v on_o you_o and_z takes_z notice_n of_o you_o who_o be_v more_o than_o if_o you_o have_v ten_o hundred_o thousand_o witness_n stand_v by_o you_o and_o look_v upon_o you_o for_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n that_o stand_v by_o you_o and_o see_v your_o behaviour_n see_v what_o you_o do_v in_o your_o worship_v of_o he_o take_v heed_n therefore_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v by_o you_o that_o be_v unbeseeming_a the_o presence_n of_o such_o a_o god_n as_o the_o lord_n be_v suppose_v that_o some_o of_o you_o be_v pray_v and_o there_o be_v some_o godly_a able_a minister_n stand_v near_o you_o it_o will_v be_v some_o mean_n to_o stir_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o mind_n what_o you_o do_v but_o now_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v not_o in_o the_o next_o room_n only_o but_o in_o the_o same_o room_n and_o stand_v by_o so_o have_v their_o heart_n work_v towards_o he_o there_o will_v be_v mighty_a working_n of_o spirit_n towards_o god_n if_o we_o see_v he_o by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n as_o well_o as_o reason_n 7_o wisdom_n when_o thou_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n in_o thy_o great_a strait_n deny_v thy_o own_o wisdom_n come_v with_o a_o resolution_n to_o be_v guide_v by_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n in_o this_o manner_n lord_n i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o order_v my_o step_n there_o be_v much_o folly_n and_o vanity_n in_o my_o heart_n but_o thou_o be_v a_o god_n of_o infinite_a wisdom_n i_o come_v to_o thou_o for_o direction_n and_o i_o profess_v here_o i_o be_o willing_a to_o give_v up_o my_o whole_a soul_n to_o be_v guide_v by_o thy_o wisdom_n if_o every_o time_n we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n be_o undo_v because_o i_o be_o a_o man_n of_o unclean_a lip_n and_o be_v god_n a_o holy_a god_n then_o let_v i_o take_v heed_n when_o i_o come_v before_o he_o that_o i_o bring_v not_o with_o i_o a_o love_n to_o any_o sin_n for_o the_o lord_n hate_v it_o and_o let_v i_o take_v heed_n that_o i_o do_v not_o cast_v dirâ—_n in_o the_o very_a face_n of_o god_n holiness_n but_o give_v up_o my_o soul_n sanctify_v god_n name_n when_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o attribute_n of_o god_n have_v such_o effect_n upon_o my_o heart_n that_o i_o labour_n upon_o this_o to_o come_v with_o a_o suitable_a heart_n before_o god_n 10_o when_o thou_o come_v before_o god_n
and_o cast_v its_o self_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o say_v as_o it_o be_v amen_o to_o what_o the_o father_n give_v oh_o lord_n here_o i_o come_v and_o embrace_v thy_o son_n as_o my_o life_n as_o my_o saviour_n as_o the_o fountain_n of_o all_o my_o good_a in_o who_o i_o expect_v all_o the_o good_a i_o be_o like_a to_o have_v either_o here_o or_o to_o all_o eternity_n so_o that_o there_o must_v be_v a_o stir_v up_o of_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n in_o a_o actual_a take_n of_o christ_n if_o thou_o be_v a_o believer_n can_v thou_o remember_v what_o thou_o do_v when_o first_o thou_o do_v take_v jesus_n christ_n when_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o preach_n of_o his_o word_n do_v reveal_v jesus_n christ_n to_o thy_o soul_n what_o do_v thou_o then_o oh_o soul_n how_o do_v thy_o soul_n work_v in_o close_v with_o christ_n as_o thy_o soul_n do_v then_o in_o close_v with_o christ_n so_o it_o must_v now_o renew_v the_o work_n there_o must_v be_v a_o renewall_n of_o the_o work_n at_o that_o time_n so_o that_o when_o you_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o it_o be_v then_o a_o time_n to_o listen_v to_o doubt_n fear_n and_o scruple_n no_o but_o it_o be_v a_o time_n that_o god_n call_v for_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n the_o cast_n of_o the_o soul_n upon_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n or_o else_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v not_o sanctify_v as_o it_o ought_v thou_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n when_o thou_o be_v busy_v thy_o soul_n in_o doubt_n and_o scruple_n in_o thy_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o then_o faith_n be_v as_o the_o mouth_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o eat_v and_o drink_v how_o can_v thou_o if_o thou_o have_v not_o a_o mouth_n thou_o have_v a_o bodily_a mouth_n to_o take_v in_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o know_v that_o without_o faith_n thy_o soul_n can_v take_v in_o christ_n faith_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o mouth_n that_o be_v by_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n the_o soul_n do_v open_v itself_o for_o jesus_n christ_n and_o not_o only_o open_v itself_o but_o take_v in_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v christ_n and_o the_o soul_n as_o one_o as_o our_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v make_v one_o with_o our_o body_n so_o faith_n take_v in_o christ_n and_o make_v he_o as_o one_o with_o thou_o and_o turn_v christ_n into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o thou_o and_o christ_n by_o faith_n be_v make_v as_o true_o one_o as_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n that_o be_v put_v into_o thy_o body_n be_v make_v one_o with_o thy_o body_n this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n without_o which_o we_o can_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n six_o there_o must_v be_v spiritual_a joy_n that_o must_v be_v exercise_v here_o for_o it_o be_v a_o feast_n here_o we_o come_v to_o sit_v with_o christ_n at_o his_o table_n we_o come_v as_o child_n to_o our_o father_n table_n and_o to_o sit_v there_o with_o jesus_n christ_n our_o elder_a brother_n now_o as_o a_o father_n do_v not_o love_n to_o have_v his_o child_n set_v in_o a_o sullen_a and_o dogged_a way_n at_o his_o table_n or_o to_o be_v cry_v but_o he_o will_v have_v the_o child_n set_v in_o comfort_n and_o with_o a_o holy_a cheerfulness_n with_o a_o holy_a freedom_n of_o spirit_n not_o in_o a_o sullen_a way_n but_o as_o a_o child_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n and_o not_o as_o a_o servant_n with_o the_o master_n object_n you_o tell_v we_o before_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v brokenness_n of_o spirit_n and_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n answ_n that_o may_v be_v and_o joy_n we_o rejoice_v with_o tremble_v therefore_o that_o brokennesse_n of_o spirit_n that_o i_o mean_v must_v not_o be_v slavish_a horror_n and_o fear_n but_o a_o kind_o melt_v of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n unto_o it_o in_o jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v at_o so_o great_a cost_n to_o purchase_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n such_o a_o gracious_a mourning_n as_o may_v stand_v with_o joy_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o that_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n in_o the_o sacrament_n that_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o joy_n be_v a_o sorrow_n that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n godly_a sorrow_n and_o evangelical_a joy_n may_v stand_v together_o very_o well_o and_o therefore_o know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o time_n neither_o to_o give_v liberty_n to_o have_v your_o heart_n â—nk_v no_o there_o must_v be_v no_o sink_a sorrow_n of_o heart_n but_o such_o a_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n as_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o it_o you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o reconcile_a father_n to_o you_o and_o have_v a_o cheerfulness_n of_o spirit_n as_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n you_o must_v look_v upon_o yourselves_o as_o god_n guest_n to_o be_v merry_a at_o his_o table_n now_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n the_o sight_n of_o christ_n crucify_a and_o yet_o at_o the_o same_o time_n a_o spiritual_a cheerfulness_n in_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o mystery_n and_o only_o those_o that_o be_v believer_n be_v evengelist_n where_o it_o be_v say_v christ_n blessed_v the_o bread_n in_o another_o it_o be_v say_v christ_n give_v thanks_o christ_n when_o he_o institute_v this_o sacrament_n he_o give_v thanks_o he_o give_v thanks_o for_o what_o he_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n the_o father_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o send_v he_o into_o the_o world_n to_o die_v for_o poor_a soul_n now_o shall_v jesus_n the_o wickedness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n natural_o and_o so_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n they_o will_v think_v you_o speak_v strange_a riddle_n whereas_o they_o bless_v themselves_o they_o bless_v god_n they_o know_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o their_o heart_n no_o yes_o there_o be_v such_o thing_n only_o they_o be_v not_o stir_v but_o they_o lie_v quiet_a as_o mud_n in_o my_o closet_n the_o lord_n have_v preserve_v a_o prayer_n to_o himself_o and_o i_o have_v get_v power_n over_o this_o vain_a heart_n of_o i_o bless_v god_n for_o this_o and_o so_o the_o spirit_n
