and_o none_o but_o he_o make_v this_o discovery_n there_o be_v two_o weighty_a reason_n for_o it_o for_o first_o none_o but_o he_o be_v able_a and_o next_o none_o but_o he_o be_v fit_a to_o make_v it_o 1._o first_o none_o but_o jesus_n christ_n be_v able_a to_o make_v this_o full_a discovery_n of_o his_o father_n for_o none_o but_o he_o be_v perfect_o acquaint_v with_o he_o alas_o all_o man_n be_v stranger_n to_o the_o father_n the_o worst_a man_n absolute_o and_o in_o all_o respect_n and_o the_o best_a in_o some_o measure_n and_o all_o the_o knowledge_n which_o any_o soul_n have_v of_o he_o it_o have_v from_o jesus_n christ_n too_o but_o now_o my_o brethren_n jesus_n christ_n have_v the_o full_a knowledge_n of_o his_o father_n he_o do_v not_o know_v he_o outward_o alone_a but_o he_o know_v his_o very_a heart_n and_o the_o secret_n of_o his_o bosom_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v say_v to_o lodge_v there_o and_o so_o to_o be_v the_o only_a possible_a revealer_n of_o the_o father_n of_o god_n which_o christ_n be_v as_o a_o saviour_n to_o discover_v viz._n his_o attribute_n of_o love_n and_o mercy_n this_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o christ_n indeed_o to_o manifest_v this_o name_n of_o god_n all_o that_o be_v sweet_a and_o lovely_a in_o he_o to_o his_o people_n this_o may_v suffice_v to_o let_v you_o know_v why_o jesus_n christ_n and_o none_o but_o he_o make_v this_o discovery_n of_o the_o father_n to_o his_o people_n we_o have_v but_o one_o thing_n yet_o behind_o why_o the_o discovery_n that_o he_o make_v be_v such_o a_o absolute_a and_o full_a discovery_n i_o give_v you_o but_o two_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o i_o have_v do_v for_o this_o time_n he_o do_v it_o

hardly_o have_v endure_v the_o rage_n and_o fury_n of_o the_o flame_n the_o violence_n of_o the_o tormentor_n we_o read_v indeed_o that_o divers_a heretic_n have_v suffer_v exquisite_a and_o horrid_a torture_n for_o their_o gross_a opinion_n and_o conceit_n as_o we_o have_v many_o instance_n in_o church_n story_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o they_o do_v it_o for_o the_o scripture_n though_o false_o and_o corrupt_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v where_o have_v be_v the_o jew_n or_o turk_n who_o for_o his_o talmud_n or_o his_o koran_n which_o be_v the_o scripture_n they_o receive_v and_o use_v have_v put_v himself_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o tormentor_n these_o and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o do_v make_v it_o in_o itself_o extreme_o credible_a that_o that_o which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o they_o may_v not_o so_o take_v hold_v upon_o we_o to_o convince_v we_o notwithstanding_o they_o may_v not_o chase_v our_o scruple_n all_o away_o nor_o clear_v up_o all_o doubt_n unless_o some_o further_a thing_n be_v do_v to_o make_v it_o credit_v by_o we_o and_o to_o make_v we_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o be_v the_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n the_o self_n same_o spirit_n which_o deliver_v it_o to_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o prophet_n who_o be_v the_o scribe_n and_o penman_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o make_v they_o know_v that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o they_o deliver_v must_v satisfy_v we_o and_o convince_v we_o also_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o we_o receive_v no_o other_o mean_n will_v do_v without_o this_o but_o this_o and_o this_o alone_a will_v do_v it_o this_o be_v a_o absolute_a and_o satisfy_a testimony_n of_o itself_o which_o carry_v all_o before_o it_o and_o put_v the_o matter_n out_o of_o question_n where_o it_o come_v other_o thing_n may_v make_v it_o credible_a but_o this_o and_o this_o alone_a will_v make_v it_o clear_o and_o demonstrative_o sure_a to_o we_o that_o it_o be_v in_o deed_n and_o truth_n the_o word_n of_o god_n now_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o the_o holy_a spirit_n do_v this_o great_a work_n which_o nothing_o else_o beside_o can_v do_v i_o answer_v that_o it_o do_v it_o principal_o two_o way_n first_o by_o remove_v those_o impediment_n which_o hinder_v this_o assurance_n and_o second_o by_o give_v we_o those_o gift_n and_o grace_n which_o make_v we_o able_a to_o receive_v it_o first_o by_o remove_v those_o impediment_n that_o hinder_v this_o assurance_n there_o be_v a_o double_a hindrance_n or_o impediment_n in_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n first_o ignorance_n whereby_o our_o eye_n be_v close_v as_o it_o be_v the_o word_n have_v light_a enough_o my_o brethren_n in_o and_o of_o itself_o to_o show_v itself_o to_o we_o to_o manifest_v itself_o to_o we_o as_o it_o be_v indeed_o but_o we_o be_v blind_a and_o can_v see_v it_o the_o second_o hindrance_n be_v corruption_n by_o mean_n of_o which_o although_o we_o see_v it_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o but_o hate_n it_o and_o dislike_v it_o and_o reject_v it_o these_o two_o the_o holy_a spirit_n cure_v and_o remove_v by_o a_o double_a remedy_n the_o first_o illumination_n restore_v our_o decay_a understanding_n to_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o their_o first_o light_n open_v our_o eye_n that_o we_o may_v see_v the_o wonder_n of_o the_o word_n and_o so_o be_v satisfy_v that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n the_o next_o sanctification_n infuse_v into_o our_o desire_n and_o our_o affection_n some_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o their_o first_o holiness_n and_o by_o this_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n open_v the_o eye_n of_o our_o blind_a mind_n that_o we_o may_v understand_v the_o scripture_n and_o see_v those_o admirable_a ray_n and_o beam_n of_o divine_a and_o heavenly_a light_n that_o shine_v in_o they_o and_o also_o rectify_v our_o corrupt_a affection_n that_o we_o may_v love_v they_o and_o embrace_v they_o we_o come_v to_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v indeed_o and_o truth_n the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v not_o this_o assurance_n in_o we_o by_o add_v any_o thing_n to_o god_n word_n by_o cure_v any_o fail_n or_o defect_n in_o it_o but_o only_o by_o bring_v it_o into_o the_o light_n and_o represent_v it_o unto_o we_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n do_v not_o make_v it_o credible_a for_o it_o be_v so_o in_o itself_o abundant_o beyond_o all_o possibility_n even_o of_o the_o best_a addition_n but_o it_o make_v it_o so_o to_o we_o by_o cure_v and_o remove_v the_o impediment_n and_o supply_v the_o defect_n which_o be_v in_o we_o by_o mean_n of_o which_o we_o can_v apprehend_v it_o as_o it_o be_v and_o i_o mention_v this_o the_o rather_o because_o some_o have_v be_v apt_a to_o say_v of_o late_a the_o word_n without_o the_o spirit_n be_v no_o more_o to_o they_o then_o any_o other_o book_n or_o any_o other_o piece_n of_o writing_n now_o if_o their_o meaning_n be_v to_o blame_v themselves_o in_o this_o and_o to_o import_v that_o their_o corruption_n and_o their_o ignorance_n be_v such_o that_o unless_o the_o spirit_n help_v they_o they_o can_v come_v to_o understand_v it_o or_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o better_a than_o another_o book_n it_o may_v receive_v a_o pretty_a fair_a construction_n but_o if_o their_o intention_n be_v to_o undervalue_v and_o abase_v the_o scripture_n as_o if_o the_o proper_a and_o innate_a and_o real_a worth_n thereof_o depend_v whole_o on_o the_o spirit_n revelation_n it_o be_v a_o horrid_a derogation_n from_o the_o precious_a word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o without_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v be_v no_o more_o to_o we_o then_o any_o other_o book_n such_o be_v the_o darkness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o our_o heart_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v more_o in_o itself_o whether_o the_o spirit_n show_v it_o we_o or_o no._n the_o spirit_n in_o this_o work_n of_o he_o do_v not_o make_v it_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o only_o to_o appear_v so_o it_o make_v no_o alteration_n in_o the_o word_n but_o in_o ourselves_o when_o first_o it_o tell_v we_o and_o assure_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v clear_o so_o before_o or_o else_o it_o certify_v we_o of_o a_o falsehood_n and_o untruth_n only_o it_o be_v not_o apprehend_v and_o believe_v to_o be_v so_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o spirit_n work_v to_o make_v we_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v without_o it_o and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o persuasion_n we_o must_v do_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o we_o must_v cry_v to_o god_n to_o send_v down_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o give_v in_o this_o assurance_n to_o we_o to_o set_v his_o seal_n and_o testimony_n to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o to_o put_v the_o matter_n out_o of_o all_o question_n to_o satisfy_v we_o without_o any_o further_a scruple_n that_o all_o that_o be_v deliver_v in_o it_o be_v of_o god_n 2._o we_o must_v take_v in_o and_o cherish_v all_o the_o light_n that_o from_o the_o spirit_n shine_v upon_o the_o soul_n sometime_o a_o beam_n break_v in_o upon_o we_o on_o a_o sudden_a it_o make_v we_o see_v and_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o all_o doubt_n be_v banish_v quite_o in_o that_o particular_a but_o we_o neglect_v it_o and_o permit_v our_o thought_n to_o be_v mislead_v to_o other_o thing_n before_o we_o fix_v and_o settle_v upon_o this_o persuasion_n and_o so_o our_o assurance_n fail_v and_o our_o doubt_n return_v again_o the_o spirit_n offer_v clear_a illumination_n and_o conviction_n and_o we_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v just_a it_o shall_v be_v withdraw_v again_o and_o thus_o far_o of_o our_o saviour_n declaration_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n due_a and_o ready_a entertainment_n of_o the_o word_n which_o he_o deliver_v together_o with_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v
grace_n consider_v with_o yourselves_o now_o jesus_n christ_n draw_v nigh_o to_o i_o he_o that_o be_v above_o in_o heaven_n and_o with_o relation_n to_o his_o bodily_a and_o fleshly_a presence_n be_v no_o more_o in_o this_o world_n be_v in_o another_o way_n come_v into_o my_o soul_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o shut_v the_o door_n against_o he_o but_o bid_v he_o very_o welcome_a when_o he_o come_v when_o he_o offer_v more_o knowledge_n faith_n love_n hope_v patience_n let_v not_o these_o offer_n be_v refuse_v remember_v when_o you_o take_v in_o these_o you_o take_v in_o christ_n with_o they_o may_v this_o be_v do_v or_o how_o may_v we_o be_v present_a with_o our_o saviour_n in_o our_o spirit_n i_o answer_v 1._o we_o may_v be_v present_a with_o he_o in_o the_o thought_n and_o meditation_n like_a to_o be_v and_o where_o they_o be_v to_o tarry_v and_o remain_v when_o i_o be_o go_v the_o world_n in_o which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n apostle_n and_o disciple_n be_v and_o be_v to_o stay_v must_v be_v conceive_v to_o be_v the_o very_a same_o which_o christ_n himself_o be_v now_o about_o to_o leave_v and_o from_o which_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o depart_v viz._n this_o low_a world_n beneath_o heaven_n that_o from_o which_o he_o be_v to_o go_v in_o that_o be_v his_o disciple_n and_o apostle_n to_o remain_v and_o now_o i_o be_o no_o more_o in_o the_o world_n but_o these_o be_v in_o the_o world_n the_o self_n same_o world_n in_o which_o i_o be_o to_o be_v no_o more_o but_o why_o be_v this_o allege_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o his_o father_n here_o that_o the_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n be_v to_o stay_v in_o this_o world_n apparent_o to_o show_v what_o cause_n he_o have_v to_o mention_v they_o in_o his_o petition_n and_o to_o commend_v they_o to_o the_o special_a care_n and_o mercy_n and_o protection_n of_o his_o father_n as_o in_o the_o word_n that_o be_v immediate_o annex_v holy_a father_n keep_v they_o through_o thy_o own_o name_n q._n d._n i_o be_o even_o now_o about_o to_o leave_v they_o and_o to_o leave_v they_o in_o the_o world_n and_o thou_o know_v what_o a_o place_n the_o world_n be_v how_o troublesome_a unpleasing_a and_o vexatious_a it_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world_n say_v he_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v add_v and_o that_o be_v but_o a_o ill_a place_n now_o that_o i_o may_v the_o better_o clear_v it_o and_o evince_v it_o to_o you_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o what_o respect_v the_o world_n be_v such_o a_o evil_a and_o uncomfortable_a place_n to_o christ_n disciple_n it_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n a_o evil_a and_o uncomfortable_a place_n to_o christ_n disciple_n that_o it_o be_v a_o place_n of_o suffer_v in_o which_o they_o be_v continual_o to_o be_v expose_v to_o many_o trial_n and_o to_o many_o trouble_n though_o they_o be_v in_o the_o world_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v hate_v by_o the_o world_n as_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o inform_v his_o disciple_n john_n 15.19_o if_o you_o be_v of_o
satisfaction_n here_o they_o have_v their_o portion_n here_o and_o they_o receive_v their_o good_a thing_n here_o but_o as_o for_o christ_n disciple_n they_o must_v look_v for_o no_o such_o matter_n and_o therefore_o he_o forewarn_v they_o when_o he_o be_v about_o to_o leave_v they_o what_o they_o be_v like_a to_o meet_v with_o in_o this_o world_n persecution_n tribulation_n and_o affliction_n all_o the_o injury_n and_o wrong_v and_o malice_n and_o despite_n and_o evil_a usage_n that_o the_o world_n can_v pour_v upon_o they_o there_o remain_v a_o rest_n to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n heb._n have_v be_v to_o other_o of_o the_o saint_n who_o have_v perhaps_o exceed_v they_o in_o holiness_n and_o grace_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o comfort_n and_o prosperity_n let_v we_o be_v wise_o cast_v on_o the_o day_n of_o trouble_n and_o distress_n let_v we_o not_o reckon_v upon_o much_o felicity_n and_o sweetness_n here_o for_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v have_v in_o this_o world_n be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o world_n have_v always_o be_v and_o be_v a_o evil_a etc._n etc._n why_o then_o use_v 2_o if_o we_o find_v it_o so_o let_v it_o not_o seem_v strange_a to_o we_o let_v we_o not_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v admire_v or_o wonder_v at_o if_o we_o meet_v with_o nothing_o else_o but_o tribulation_n and_o affliction_n and_o vexation_n in_o the_o world_n if_o we_o have_v very_o little_a quiet_a or_o content_a here_o let_v not_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n think_v much_o of_o it_o if_o they_o be_v always_o trouble_v and_o distress_a if_o they_o be_v always_o follow_v and_o pursue_v with_o one_o affliction_n or_o another_o so_o that_o they_o can_v have_v a_o comfortable_a hour_n almost_o but_o let_v they_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o usual_a thing_n the_o world_n have_v always_o be_v such_o a_o uncomfortable_a place_n to_o christ_n disciple_n and_o therefore_o let_v they_o serious_o consider_v that_o they_o can_v expect_v no_o other_o live_v in_o such_o a_o place_n as_o they_o do_v but_o this_o i_o do_v but_o glance_v at_o in_o my_o passage_n by_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o world_n have_v always_o etc._n etc._n why_o then_o they_o be_v to_o remove_v from_o it_o and_o this_o it_o seem_v be_v hazekias_n case_n when_o he_o hear_v that_o he_o must_v die_v he_o turn_v to_o the_o wall_n and_o weep_v sore_o yea_o he_o chatter_v like_o a_o swallow_n and_o mourn_v like_o a_o dove_n our_o saviour_n christ_n forewarn_v peter_n of_o his_o death_n john_n 21.18_o tell_v he_o he_o shall_v be_v carry_v where_o he_o will_v not_o by_o which_o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o even_o in_o the_o bless_a martyr_n there_o may_v be_v a_o lothness_n to_o depart_v out_o of_o these_o earthly_a tabernacle_n though_o the_o righteous_a soul_n of_o lot_n be_v vex_v every_o day_n as_o long_o as_o he_o remain_v in_o sodom_n yet_o oh_o how_o do_v he_o linger_v when_o the_o lord_n will_v take_v he_o thence_o gen._n 19.16_o even_o so_o the_o saint_n in_o his_o service_n 2._o and_o as_o they_o must_v deliver_v christ_n errand_n and_o not_o their_o own_o so_o for_o christ_n end_n and_o not_o their_o own_o they_o must_v not_o seek_v their_o own_o profit_n or_o their_o own_o honour_n but_o the_o honour_n of_o their_o master_n as_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o father_n messenger_n glorify_v not_o himself_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v but_o he_o that_o send_v he_o heb._n 5.5_o so_o they_o that_o be_v the_o messenger_n of_o christ_n must_v not_o glorify_v themselves_o but_o christ_n that_o send_v they_o they_o must_v act_v for_o he_o and_o a_o course_n in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n that_o they_o may_v seem_v witty_a and_o learned_a and_o eloquent_a that_o man_n may_v admire_v they_o and_o applaud_v their_o ability_n but_o that_o they_o may_v admire_v christ_n that_o the_o thought_n and_o affection_n of_o man_n may_v be_v carry_v to_o he_o they_o must_v not_o preach_v themselves_o but_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 2_o cor._n 4_o 5._o use_v 4_o be_v it_o so_o that_o apostle_n minister_n etc._n etc._n then_o let_v the_o church_n be_v here_o direct_v and_o advise_v to_o prove_v those_o that_o pretend_v they_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n whether_o they_o be_v send_v by_o christ_n or_o no._n the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n be_v much_o commend_v for_o her_o care_n and_o diligence_n in_o this_o regard_n apoc._n 2.2_o i_o know_v thy_o work_n say_v christ_n there_o and_o thy_o labour_n and_o thy_o patience_n and_o how_o thou_o can_v not_o bear_v they_o which_o be_v she_o try_v they_o and_o so_o discover_v they_o to_o be_v impostor_n and_o deceiver_n and_o true_o there_o be_v many_o such_o in_o these_o time_n who_o say_v they_o come_v from_o jesus_n christ_n when_o indeed_o he_o never_o send_v they_o they_o be_v messenger_n of_o satan_n and_o not_o of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o it_o concern_v the_o church_n to_o prove_v they_o well_o who_o come_v with_o these_o pretence_n and_o to_o sift_v they_o to_o the_o bottom_n that_o they_o may_v know_v not_o the_o speech_n of_o these_o man_n only_o but_o the_o power_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n 4_o 19_o and_o here_o you_o be_v not_o only_o to_o consider_v whether_o they_o have_v obtain_v the_o election_n and_o ordination_n of_o the_o church_n or_o no_o for_o many_o reach_n to_o this_o who_o be_v a_o messenger_n of_o christ_n he_o be_v one_o of_o a_o thousand_o for_o gift_n and_o ability_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n when_o he_o raise_v up_o prophet_n what_o spirit_n what_o power_n neither_o do_v believe_v nor_o shall_v believe_v now_o all_o the_o question_n be_v which_o of_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o people_n our_o saviour_n christ_n denote_v by_o the_o world_n in_o this_o place_n there_o be_v no_o colour_n to_o conceive_v that_o the_o world_n shall_v here_o be_v take_v for_o believer_n for_o such_o as_o do_v then_o believe_v when_o christ_n speak_v these_o word_n the_o apparent_o import_v unbeliever_n but_o whether_o such_o as_o believe_v not_o for_o the_o present_a but_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n or_o such_o as_o neither_o do_v believe_v nor_o shall_v believe_v whether_o elect_a unbeliever_n or_o reprobate_v unbeliever_n will_v need_v a_o little_a brief_o to_o be_v inquire_v and_o resolve_v some_o of_o no_o small_a authority_n conceive_v that_o by_o the_o world_n be_v mean_v elect_a unbeliever_n such_o as_o do_v not_o then_o believe_v but_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n conceive_v it_o with_o a_o save_n and_o a_o justify_v faith_n justify_v faith_n our_o saviour_n mention_n it_o as_o opposite_a to_o both_o these_o in_o the_o first_o place_n you_o know_v he_o pray_v for_o such_o as_o do_v believe_v when_o he_o make_v this_o prayer_n and_o then_o for_o such_o as_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n neither_o pray_v i_o for_o these_o only_a but_o for_o they_o also_o that_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v one_o etc._n etc._n that_o the_o world_n who_o neither_o do_v believe_v nor_o shall_v believe_v with_o a_o justify_v faith_n may_v yet_o by_o this_o mean_n be_v so_o far_o convince_v as_o historical_o to_o assent_v to_o this_o that_o thou_o have_v send_v i_o q._n d._n this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o desire_v that_o they_o who_o shall_v in_o after_o time_n believe_v by_o my_o apostle_n and_o make_v they_o look_v with_o a_o better_a eye_n on_o christ_n and_o on_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n when_o they_o that_o teach_v it_o and_o profess_v it_o harmonious_o agree_v among_o themselves_o and_o hence_o be_v this_o petition_n of_o our_o saviour_n here_o that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v one_o etc._n etc._n that_o so_o the_o world_n although_o it_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o i_o thing_n they_o will_v the_o soon_o gain_v the_o approbation_n and_o assent_n of_o those_o that_o be_v without_o but_o if_o they_o wrangle_v and_o contend_v this_o will_v make_v they_o more_o averse_a from_o jesus_n christ_n &_o from_o the_o gospel_n and_o true_o not_o one_o thing_n almost_o have_v keep_v man_n more_o aloof_o from_o christ_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o salvation_n in_o and_o by_o &_o through_o he_o than_o the_o perpetual_a hot_a and_o endless_a controversy_n and_o dispute_n that_o have_v be_v among_o the_o teacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n nay_o if_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o agree_v among_o themselves_o say_v they_o that_o be_v without_o even_o let_v they_o all_o alone_a we_o will_v carry_v till_o they_o do_v and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n still_o be_v very_o circumspect_a to_o manifest_v agreement_n and_o consent_n among_o themselves_o in_o that_o which_o they_o deliver_v to_o the_o people_n because_o they_o know_v of_o how_o great_a consequence_n it_o be_v to_o further_a the_o success_n &_o efficacy_n of_o their_o doctrine_n it_o be_v observable_a that_o paul_n join_v one_o or_o two_o together_o with_o himself_o in_o his_o epistle_n sometime_o sylvanus_n sometime_o sylvanus_n and_o timotheus_n who_o be_v not_o inspire_v man_n as_o it_o be_v probable_o conceive_v and_o so_o can_v not_o add_v a_o whit_n to_o the_o divine_a authority_n of_o etc._n etc._n if_o they_o live_v in_o unity_n and_o love_n and_o sweet_a accord_n together_o they_o that_o be_v alien_n to_o religion_n stranger_n to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o his_o gospel_n will_v think_v the_o better_a of_o they_o for_o their_o sake_n but_o if_o they_o be_v continual_o brawl_v and_o oppose_v one_o another_o this_o keep_v other_o off_o from_o christ_n if_o he_o be_v own_v and_o follow_v by_o none_o but_o by_o a_o company_n of_o wrangle_v quarrelsome_a contentious_a people_n they_o will_v
such_o ground_n and_o reason_n as_o his_o spirit_n natural_o be_v not_o likely_a to_o suggest_v because_o they_o do_v not_o any_o way_n concern_v he_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n as_o when_o upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o some_o great_a dishonour_n that_o will_v come_v to_o god_n if_o such_o a_o thing_n shall_v be_v deny_v a_o man_n be_v much_o enlarge_v and_o quicken_v in_o his_o prayer_n yea_o when_o his_o prayer_n be_v against_o his_o natural_a desire_n when_o he_o be_v earnest_a with_o the_o lord_n in_o secret_a to_o help_v he_o to_o pluck_v out_o a_o right_a eye_n or_o to_o cut_v off_o a_o right_a hand_n to_o mortify_v and_o curse_v and_o kill_v those_o lust_n and_o those_o corruption_n which_o natural_o be_v extreme_o dear_a to_o he_o and_o that_o upon_o such_o ground_n and_o motive_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o self_n respect_n when_o he_o shall_v serious_o and_o sincere_o beg_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v but_o a_o little_a wealth_n a_o little_a honour_n if_o he_o perceive_v that_o more_o will_v do_v he_o spiritual_a hurt_n that_o it_o will_v puff_n he_o up_o and_o make_v he_o proud_a as_o agur_n do_v give_v i_o not_o riches_n feed_v i_o with_o food_n convenient_a for_o i_o leave_v i_o be_v full_a and_o deny_v thou_o and_o say_v who_o be_v the_o lord_n this_o man_n be_v like_a to_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n if_o we_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n he_o may_v serve_v god_n with_o they_o that_o he_o may_v promote_v his_o end_n that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o able_a instrument_n to_o help_v his_o church_n to_o support_v his_o people_n to_o advance_v his_o glory_n to_o appear_v for_o his_o cause_n even_o these_o desire_n of_o his_o be_v spiritual_a although_o not_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o at_o least_o for_o the_o end_n of_o they_o but_o now_o my_o brethren_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o have_v not_o christ_n spirit_n desire_v these_o outward_a blessing_n that_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o lust_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v jam._n 4.3_o you_o ask_v and_o receive_v not_o because_o you_o ask_v amiss_o that_o you_o may_v consume_v it_o upon_o your_o lust_n that_o you_o may_v make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n with_o it_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v oil_n to_o nourish_v and_o to_o feed_v the_o sinful_a flame_n that_o be_v within_o you_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v my_o brethren_n with_o a_o multitude_n of_o man_n they_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o some_o thing_n to_o bestow_v upon_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n to_o serve_v their_o carnal_a turn_n to_o satisfy_v their_o brutish_a and_o voluptuous_a pleasure_n and_o desire_n they_o will_v be_v in_o place_n and_o power_n that_o they_o may_v raise_v their_o name_n and_o family_n that_o they_o may_v swell_v and_o swagger_v over_o their_o inferior_n that_o they_o may_v plague_v their_o enemy_n and_o pleasure_v those_o that_o be_v observant_a of_o they_o they_o will_v have_v wealth_n and_o riches_n in_o abundance_n that_o they_o may_v swimm_n in_o full_a delight_n and_o fare_v delicious_o every_o day_n agur_n measure_v the_o conveniency_n or_o inconveniency_n of_o his_o outward_a state_n as_o it_o will_v fit_v he_o more_o or_o less_o for_o god_n service_n not_o poverty_n lest_o i_o deny_v thou_o not_o riches_n leave_v i_o forget_v thou_o but_o these_o man_n measure_v it_o by_o nothing_o but_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o so_o their_o prayer_n serve_v their_o lust_n and_o they_o will_v have_v god_n himself_o to_o serve_v they_o too_o if_o they_o can_v prevail_v with_o he_o and_o be_v such_o desire_n as_o these_o like_a to_o be_v raise_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n what_o will_v the_o spirit_n stir_v man_n up_o to_o pray_v for_o any_o thing_n to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v the_o flesh_n the_o carnal_a part_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n lu_v against_o the_o flesh_n for_o those_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o another_o and_o will_v the_o spirit_n notwithstanding_o strive_v for_o that_o which_o shall_v uphold_v and_o feed_v those_o lust_n against_o which_o the_o spirit_n lu_v believe_v it_o brethren_n they_o that_o pray_v for_o any_o blessing_n to_o maintain_v their_o lust_n with_o they_o their_o pride_n intemperance_n etc._n etc._n do_v not_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n object_n but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o then_o how_o disposal_n there_o will_v be_v no_o sweet_a submission_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n no_o he_o must_v have_v this_o or_o that_o and_o he_o can_v bear_v a_o check_n as_o rachel_n must_v have_v child_n or_o she_o die_v when_o once_o the_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o any_o thing_n that_o serve_v to_o feed_v a_o sensual_a appetite_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n it_o be_v violent_o bend_v and_o it_o must_v not_o be_v deny_v 3._o you_o shall_v discover_v it_o by_o the_o effect_n i_o mean_v the_o use_n of_o those_o external_a blessing_n which_o you_o pray_v for_o you_o pray_v for_o health_n you_o pray_v for_o riches_n
and_o the_o like_a and_o you_o receive_v they_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n he_o give_v you_o the_o desire_n of_o your_o heart_n in_o these_o thing_n well_o now_o consider_v with_o yourselves_o what_o use_v you_o put_v they_o to_o when_o you_o have_v get_v they_o and_o what_o bill_n you_o bring_v in_o what_o so_o much_o health_n and_o so_o much_o strength_n bestow_v upon_o the_o his_o cause_n or_o his_o poor_a distress_a servant_n be_v these_o the_o bill_n that_o you_o bring_v in_o to_o god_n and_o will_v you_o own_v they_o in_o the_o latter_a day_n brethren_n by_o your_o laying_n out_o you_o may_v discover_v to_o what_o intent_n you_o have_v pray_v for_o outward_a blessing_n whether_o to_o consume_v they_o on_o your_o lust_n or_o no_o and_o if_o that_o have_v be_v your_o end_n the_o spirit_n have_v not_o be_v your_o principle_n in_o these_o petition_n if_o we_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n we_o keep_v a_o constant_a course_n in_o prayer_n we_o do_v not_o pray_v as_o fear_v and_o strong_a conviction_n and_o the_o like_a that_o may_v hold_v some_o certain_a man_n almost_o to_o a_o continue_a practice_n of_o the_o outward_a duty_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o rare_a that_o he_o be_v constant_a who_o act_v by_o his_o own_o spirit_n but_o now_o my_o brethren_n he_o that_o act_v by_o christ_n spirit_n be_v a_o steady_a man_n in_o prayer_n he_o can_v appeal_v to_o god_n as_o david_n do_v psal_n 40.9_o i_o have_v not_o restrain_v my_o lip_n oh_o lord_n thou_o know_v christ_n spirit_n dwell_v in_o he_o he_o do_v not_o sojourn_v in_o he_o for_o a_o time_n but_o he_o dwell_v in_o he_o as_o in_o his_o fix_a and_o his_o settle_a habitation_n and_o he_o dwell_v in_o he_o as_o a_o spirit_n of_o supplication_n so_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v call_v zech._n he_o psal_n 31.22_o nevertheless_o thou_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o my_o prayer_n even_o than_o i_o pray_v to_o thou_o when_o i_o be_v in_o that_o temper_n so_o in_o another_o place_n from_o the_o end_n of_o the_o earth_n will_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o even_o when_o my_o heart_n be_v overwhelm_v psal_n 61.2_o and_o whence_o proceed_v this_o my_o brethren_n sure_o these_o prayer_n of_o all_o it_o grieve_v he_o so_o that_o he_o be_v sick_a of_o love_n as_o the_o poor_a church_n be_v cant._n 2.5_o when_o christ_n withdraw_v himself_o a_o while_n this_o be_v her_o grief_n i_o seek_v he_o in_o the_o behalf_n of_o those_o person_n that_o they_o also_o may_v be_v with_o i_o where_o i_o be_o as_o for_o the_o person_n who_o our_o saviour_n pray_v for_o you_o see_v they_o be_v describe_v here_o by_o the_o father_n give_v they_o to_o jesus_n christ_n let_v they_o be_v what_o they_o will_v in_o all_o consideration_n and_o
