johns_n ministry_n who_o come_v to_o humble_a man_n and_o prepare_v man_n for_o christ._n they_o differ_v in_o their_o continuance_n the_o former_a a_o lone_n prove_v but_o a_o passion_n and_o it_o come_v but_o from_o 4_o flesh_n so_o as_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o flesh_n be_v it_o be_v but_o as_o the_o flower_n of_o the_o grass_n of_o the_o same_o fade_a nature_n the_o root_n be_v from_o whence_o it_o come_v though_o it_o come_v like_o a_o violent_a torrent_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o swell_v above_o the_o bank_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o as_o a_o land-floud_n but_o this_o latter_a be_v as_o a_o constant_a river_n that_o have_v a_o spring_n which_o though_o it_o keep_v within_o the_o bank_n and_o do_v not_o overflow_v so_o much_o as_o the_o other_o yet_o it_o run_v constant_o and_o the_o further_a it_o run_v the_o great_a it_o grow_v humiliation_n i_o will_v give_v you_o also_o some_o property_n of_o that_o humiliation_n to_o which_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v here_o by_o which_o it_o may_v be_v yet_o further_o know_v and_o difference_v we_o will_v take_v those_o fruit_n of_o it_o we_o find_v in_o the_o prayer_n text_n 1_o it_o will_v make_v a_o man_n pray_v and_o 2._o seek_v god_n face_n and_o turn_v from_o his_o evil_a way_n it_o have_v always_o these_o as_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o to_o pray_v judas_n be_v humble_v but_o he_o have_v no_o 1_o mind_n to_o pray_v nor_o a_o ability_n to_o pray_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n go_v not_o with_o it_o but_o he_o that_o have_v that_o true_a humiliation_n be_v able_a to_o pour_v forth_o his_o soul_n to_o god_n and_o indeed_o prayer_n be_v not_o the_o work_n of_o the_o memory_n and_o wit_n but_o the_o proper_a work_n of_o a_o break_a heart_n again_o second_o to_o seek_v god_n face_n this_o true_a face_n humiliation_n cut_v a_o man_n off_o from_o his_o own_o root_n and_o bottom_n and_o cause_v he_o to_o seek_v the_o lord_n alone_o which_o seek_v use_v to_o be_v express_v in_o prayer_n that_o other_o will_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o seek_v mercy_n but_o this_o to_o seek_v god_n face_n that_o be_v if_o they_o have_v his_o favour_n it_o be_v enough_o they_o seek_v god_n as_o sequester_v from_o all_o thing_n else_o though_o such_o a_o soul_n have_v assurance_n of_o be_v free_v from_o hell_n it_o will_v not_o content_v he_o unless_o he_o see_v god_n face_n that_o which_o absalon_n counterfeit_v as_o know_v it_o to_o be_v a_o true_a strain_n of_o a_o love_a and_o humble_a child_n to_o a_o father_n when_o he_o have_v his_o life_n give_v he_o though_o banish_v from_o the_o court_n let_v i_o humble_v himself_o but_o transgress_v more_o and_o more_o which_o imply_v that_o when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v as_o he_o shall_v he_o transgress_v no_o more_o as_o he_o have_v do_v and_o so_o manasses_n do_v so_o humble_a himself_o as_o he_o transgress_v no_o more_o it_o will_v make_v he_o become_v strong_a against_o that_o sin_n he_o have_v transgress_v simile_n in_o as_o a_o bone_n that_o have_v be_v break_v be_v strong_a when_o it_o be_v right_o set_v again_o he_o especial_o humble_v himself_o for_o and_o turn_v from_o his_o belove_a sin_n and_o with_o that_o from_o all_o the_o rest_n 2_o property_n be_v it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o cleave_v fast_o to_o christ._n christ_n and_o so_o draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o in_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o obedience_n to_o obey_v he_o constant_o general_o and_o thorough_o man_n may_v have_v light_a wound_n make_v in_o their_o heart_n which_o do_v not_o drive_v they_o to_o the_o physician_n which_o awaken_v man_n a_o little_a but_o they_o a_o defect_n that_o be_v in_o it_o in_o which_o respect_n though_o it_o come_v near_o the_o true_a yet_o differ_v from_o it_o which_o be_v in_o the_o event_n see_v in_o this_o that_o the_o true_a cause_v to_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o to_o cleave_v to_o he_o without_o separation_n that_o you_o may_v therefore_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o this_o and_o the_o other_o and_o wherein_o that_o other_o be_v defective_a mark_v how_o that_o which_o be_v true_a work_n this_o in_o one_o who_o yet_o be_v not_o quite_o cut_v off_o but_o hang_v by_o a_o thread_n as_o it_o be_v there_o be_v some_o secret_a fibrae_fw-la some_o vein_n and_o string_n that_o be_v not_o cut_v in_o piece_n which_o keep_v life_n in_o the_o old_a man_n and_o a_o man_n remain_v still_o upon_o his_o old_a stock_n and_o so_o long_a christ_n come_v not_o into_o the_o heart_n not_o until_o a_o man_n be_v unbottomed_a of_o himself_o and_o see_v he_o can_v no_o way_n be_v happy_a in_o himself_o or_o within_o his_o own_o compass_n but_o see_v all_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o and_o from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n until_o then_o he_o will_v not_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o nor_o cleave_v to_o or_o follow_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n full_o now_o then_o the_o other_o humiliation_n be_v defective_a in_o this_o in_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o this_o manner_n enough_o bottom_v it_o cut_v not_o a_o man_n whole_o off_o from_o himself_o the_o foundation_n be_v not_o lay_v low_o enough_o there_o be_v want_v depth_n of_o earth_n there_o be_v indeed_o so_o much_o earth_n as_o shall_v bring_v forth_o a_o green_a blade_n of_o profession_n and_o such_o a_o foundation_n as_o there_o may_v be_v erect_v a_o slight_a build_n upon_o but_o it_o be_v not_o low_a enough_o to_o bear_v a_o substantial_a building_n that_o shall_v stand_v out_o all_o wind_n and_o weather_n this_o true_a humiliation_n have_v these_o two_o thing_n go_v with_o it_o a_o man_n see_v no_o bottom_n in_o himself_o 1_o seethe_v a_o bottom_n out_o of_o himself_o to_o stand_v upon_o humiliation_n and_o so_o he_o cast_v himself_o upon_o that_o clasp_v about_o christ_n and_o whole_o adher_v unto_o he_o and_o so_o draw_v all_o sap_n and_o life_n from_o he_o as_o the_o branch_n do_v from_o the_o root_n and_o thence_o come_v that_o resolution_n and_o ability_n to_o cleave_v to_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o please_v he_o in_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o resolution_n to_o do_v it_o so_o all_o his_o ability_n to_o go_v through_o with_o it_o for_o be_v join_v to_o christ_n there_o come_v the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n call_v the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n death_n because_o it_o work_v a_o virtue_n like_a unto_o his_o death_n into_o the_o heart_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o yet_o in_o this_o manner_n break_v many_o take_v up_o purpose_n and_o good_a desire_n but_o be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v they_o because_o they_o be_v bottom_v on_o their_o own_o strength_n whereas_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v break_v from_o itself_o and_o engraft_a into_o christ_n such_o purpose_n make_v in_o his_o strength_n will_v thrive_v and_o grow_v there_o for_o if_o the_o soil_n be_v make_v good_a and_o fit_a plant_n be_v plant_v in_o it_o it_o be_v certain_a they_o will_v thrive_v now_o in_o a_o good_a heart_n those_o desire_n that_o be_v plant_v there_o do_v thrive_v and_o wither_v no_o more_o and_o though_o there_o may_v now_o and_o then_o wave_n arise_v and_o so_o they_o may_v be_v toss_v to_o and_o fro_o yet_o substantial_o they_o do_v not_o wither_v nor_o fall_v from_o the_o foundation_n those_o therefore_o who_o have_v begin_v a_o good_a course_n for_o a_o year_n or_o it_o a_o month_n and_o go_v not_o on_o in_o it_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n they_o want_v humble_v he_o that_o be_v true_o humble_v fall_v back_o no_o more_o manasses_n do_v not_o nor_o saint_n paul_n lord_n what_o will_v thou_o have_v
in_o thou_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o that_o full_a effect_n they_o shall_v for_o they_o overcome_v not_o that_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o thou_o for_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o good_a thing_n thou_o be_v still_o a_o sabbath_n profaner_n a_o drunkard_n give_v to_o company_n i_o may_v go_v over_o all_o other_o sin_n but_o in_o a_o word_n if_o they_o overcome_v not_o every_o sin_n they_o be_v nothing_o for_o the_o save_v thou_o if_o they_o have_v be_v effectual_a in_o thou_o they_o will_v have_v drive_v out_o the_o darkness_n all_o the_o good_a thing_n thou_o have_v avail_v not_o to_o humble_v by_o affliction_n and_o other_o not_o therefore_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v send_v his_o spirit_n to_o convince_v you_o and_o learn_v also_o not_o to_o be_v offend_v at_o we_o when_o in_o preach_v the_o law_n your_o conscience_n be_v trouble_v it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o trouble_v you_o else_o our_o word_n will_v not_o trouble_v you_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o angry_a at_o we_o and_o therefore_o also_o do_v not_o put_v off_o this_o duty_n of_o get_v your_o heart_n humble_v for_o thou_o be_v not_o able_a so_o much_o as_o to_o humble_v thyself_o therefore_o take_v the_o present_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o may_v be_v about_o it_o a_o month_n or_o two_o ere_o thou_o find_v the_o spirit_n come_v yet_o he_o will_v come_v in_o the_o end_n and_o then_o the_o work_n will_v be_v thorough_o do_v for_o god_n have_v make_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o he_o will_v baptize_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o with_o fire_n not_o only_o to_o his_o disciple_n but_o those_o that_o yet_o never_o have_v it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o increase_v but_o to_o begin_v grace_n yea_o if_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o a_o heart_n to_o pray_v to_o consider_v this_o promise_n so_o as_o thou_o have_v take_v up_o a_o resolution_n to_o wait_v and_o to_o set_v thyself_o to_o the_o work_n when_o thou_o have_v do_v so_o the_o spirit_n be_v already_o in_o thy_o heart_n the_o work_n be_v begin_v though_o thou_o think_v not_o so_o and_o never_o plead_v thou_o can_v not_o do_v it_o without_o the_o spirit_n for_o i_o ask_v thou_o this_o question_n do_v thou_o ever_o commit_v a_o sin_n in_o which_o thou_o can_v say_v i_o do_v it_o against_o my_o will_n be_v there_o ever_o any_o duty_n which_o thou_o have_v a_o thought_n to_o do_v that_o thou_o can_v say_v suffer_v much_o but_o he_o will_v be_v avenge_v on_o they_o that_o wrong_v his_o people_n thus_o much_o for_o this_o doctrine_n 2_o chron._n 7._o 14._o if_o my_o people_n that_o be_v call_v by_o my_o name_n do_v humble_a themselves_o we_o be_v now_o come_v to_o the_o condition_n upon_o which_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n be_v here_o promise_v whereof_o the_o first_o you_o see_v be_v humiliation_n if_o my_o people_n do_v humble_a themselves_o in_o the_o handle_n of_o which_o i_o will_v proceed_v two_o way_n first_o negative_o that_o without_o humiliation_n and_o 1_o unless_o man_n do_v humble_a themselves_o they_o can_v have_v no_o interest_n in_o these_o promise_n second_o affirmative_o that_o if_o they_o do_v humble_a 2_o themselves_o than_o god_n will_v be_v merciful_a to_o they_o and_o forgive_v their_o sin_n for_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o first_o i_o raise_v this_o doctrine_n mercy_n out_o of_o the_o word_n that_o without_o humiliation_n no_o man_n shall_v obtain_v mercy_n we_o see_v that_o god_n suspend_v mercy_n upon_o it_o here_o as_o without_o which_o no_o mercy_n can_v be_v expect_v which_o therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v think_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o the_o more_o large_o to_o be_v insist_v upon_o i_o express_v the_o doctrine_n in_o a_o more_o large_a and_o general_a word_n humiliation_n which_o contain_v in_o it_o as_o well_o humiliation_n humiliation_n passive_a or_o be_v humble_v as_o humiliation_n active_a as_o for_o more_o clear_a distinction_n sake_n i_o call_v they_o whereby_o we_o humble_v ourselves_o which_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n intend_v in_o the_o text_n explicit_o and_o direct_o which_o also_o in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o this_o point_n i_o main_o intend_v yet_o i_o shut_v up_o both_o together_o in_o this_o negative_a part_n of_o this_o discourse_n because_o they_o be_v though_o in_o themselves_o distinct_a yet_o always_o conjoin_v in_o their_o work_n and_o the_o latter_a do_v always_o presuppose_v the_o former_a and_o do_v necessary_o imply_v it_o here_o for_o no_o man_n do_v ever_o come_v to_o humble_v himself_o that_o be_v not_o first_o humble_v this_o negative_a part_n of_o exclude_v man_n from_o mercy_n without_o both_o these_o be_v also_o alike_o common_a to_o both_o it_o be_v a_o like_a true_a that_o no_o man_n do_v ever_o attain_v mercy_n that_o be_v not_o first_o humble_v and_o that_o do_v not_o humble_v himself_o so_o as_o in_o this_o negative_a part_n they_o agree_v and_o concur_v again_o though_o that_o affirmative_a part_n mention_v be_v proper_a to_o that_o humiliation_n active_a the_o promise_n of_o interest_n in_o mercy_n be_v make_v to_o they_o that_o humble_a themselves_o and_o not_o to_o all_o that_o be_v humble_v there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v much_o humble_v who_o yet_o obtain_v not_o mercy_n yet_o i_o join_v both_o together_o in_o this_o first_o part_n chief_o because_o as_o they_o be_v conjoin_v in_o their_o work_n so_o they_o must_v necessary_o be_v in_o the_o explication_n of_o they_o for_o we_o can_v come_v distinct_o to_o know_v and_o find_v out_o what_o it_o be_v to_o humble_v ourselves_o which_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o principal_o aim_v at_o without_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v humble_v the_o one_o beginning_n where_o the_o other_o end_n the_o one_o be_v a_o preparative_n to_o the_o other_o that_o therefore_o we_o may_v see_v how_o far_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o go_v and_o how_o they_o be_v distinguish_v we_o will_v shut_v both_o up_o in_o this_o first_o doctrine_n now_o in_o handle_v this_o doctrine_n we_o will_v do_v two_o thing_n first_o show_v that_o man_n must_v be_v humble_v and_o humble_a 1_o themselves_o ere_o they_o can_v come_v to_o have_v interest_n in_o these_o promise_n we_o will_v show_v what_o it_o be_v to_o humble_v a_o man_n self_n 2_o and_o to_o be_v humble_v for_o the_o first_o this_o place_n alone_o be_v sufficient_a ground_n humiliation_n god_n will_v not_o have_v put_v in_o such_o a_o condition_n in_o vain_a if_o it_o may_v have_v be_v spare_v in_o any_o but_o beside_o this_o ground_n we_o have_v the_o practice_n of_o all_o the_o master_n builder_n who_o make_v it_o their_o first_o work_n as_o here_o it_o be_v the_o first_o condition_n to_o humble_a man_n that_o they_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o humble_v themselves_o and_o to_o omit_v all_o other_o instance_n we_o have_v all_o the_o three_o person_n seal_v to_o this_o method_n this_o be_v god_n the_o father_n method_n in_o the_o first_o sermon_n that_o ever_o be_v preach_v which_o himself_o father_n also_o preach_v as_o a_o pattern_n for_o all_o minister_n to_o follow_v and_o when_o he_o will_v draw_v adam_n and_o eve_n in_o to_o seek_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n he_o first_o expostulate_v the_o matter_n with_o they_o to_o humble_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o then_o le_fw-fr we_o fall_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o messiah_n and_o second_o jesus_n christ_n the_o second_o son_n person_n in_o his_o first_o sermon_n in_o preach_v the_o gospel_n as_o in_o luk._n 4._o 7._o show_n his_o approbation_n of_o 4._o this_o method_n in_o that_o he_o make_v this_o his_o first_o subject_n of_o his_o first_o sermon_n we_o appear_v by_o the_o text_n he_o take_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n but_o to_o who_o to_o those_o that_o be_v first_o humble_a and_o humble_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v upon_o i_o because_o he_o have_v anoint_v i_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o such_o as_o be_v poor_a and_o break_a in_o heart_n and_o the_o same_o order_n the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o three_o person_n be_v foretell_v by_o christ_n that_o when_o he_o be_v ghost_n come_v he_o will_v observe_v in_o work_v upon_o man_n heart_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o apostle_n etc._n etc._n john_n 16._o 8._o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n for_o humiliation_n 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v his_o first_o work_n then_o of_o righteousness_n for_o justification_n last_o of_o judgement_n that_o be_v that_o sanctification_n which_o person_n justify_v be_v to_o have_v wrought_v in_o they_o we_o come_v now_o to_o the_o explication_n and_o reason_n of_o this_o point_n which_o shall_v be_v to_o show_v the_o necessity_n of_o this_o humillation_n to_o the_o other_o that_o follow_v 1_o of_o the_o order_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v here_o place_v the_o first_o 2_o of_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o first_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v it_o bring_v man_n home_o to_o he_o without_o this_o humiliation_n he_o can_v do_v as_o he_o do_v at_o the_o first_o creation_n say_v no_o more_o but_o let_v there_o be_v light_n and_o there_o will_v be_v light_n and_o that_o without_o any_o of_o this_o thunder_n he_o may_v say_v let_v there_o be_v grace_n and_o there_o will_v be_v grace_n he_o can_v come_v in_o the_o still_a voice_n without_o rent_v the_o rock_n and_o say_v no_o more_o but_o open_v you_o everlasting_a door_n lift_v up_o your_o head_n you_o gate_n and_o they_o will_v be_v open_a but_o as_o though_o he_o may_v have_v bring_v the_o child_n of_o israel_n out_o of_o egypt_n into_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n without_o lead_v they_o through_o the_o wilderness_n yet_o his_o good_a pleasure_n be_v thereby_o rather_o to_o humble_v they_o and_o prove_v they_o so_o it_o be_v here_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o necessity_n may_v be_v draw_v from_o the_o relation_n and_o respect_v which_o this_o humiliation_n have_v both_o to_o the_o other_o condition_n that_o follow_v and_o all_o that_o be_v promise_v here_o in_o the_o text_n unto_o which_o we_o will_v fit_v the_o reason_n that_o
those_o hearer_n signify_v by_o the_o second_o and_o three_o ground_n do_v who_o receive_v the_o seed_n with_o joy_n and_o as_o those_o of_o who_o it_o be_v say_v christ_n will_v not_o commit_v himself_o to_o they_o but_o stay_v with_o he_o man_n will_v not_o unless_o they_o be_v humble_v for_o unless_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v to_o part_v with_o all_o for_o christ_n and_o to_o sell_v all_o he_o will_v in_o the_o end_n repent_v of_o his_o bargain_n if_o there_o be_v a_o reservation_n of_o any_o thing_n the_o time_n will_v come_v he_o will_v go_v back_o and_o start_v aside_o like_o a_o break_a bow_n and_o until_o a_o man_n be_v thorough_o humble_v he_o will_v not_o be_v bring_v to_o part_v with_o all_o for_o christ_n he_o that_o be_v humble_v he_o only_o be_v the_o merchant-like_a mind_a man_n who_o sell_v all_o he_o have_v and_o go_v away_o rejoice_v be_v glad_a at_o the_o heart_n that_o he_o have_v christ_n though_o with_o the_o loss_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n he_o be_v willing_a to_o take_v christ_n upon_o all_o condition_n with_o loss_n and_o cross_n and_o to_o deny_v himself_o in_o every_o thing_n for_o he_o know_v the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o set_v sweet_a the_o last_o reason_n have_v relation_n to_o the_o last_o thing_n mercy_n here_o promise_v of_o take_v away_o the_o judgement_n and_o heal_a the_o land_n god_n shall_v not_o have_v the_o praise_n of_o his_o judgement_n and_o of_o his_o mercy_n in_o take_v they_o away_o unless_o man_n be_v humble_v for_o if_o when_o god_n do_v afflict_v man_n he_o shall_v restore_v they_o again_o without_o this_o humiliation_n man_n will_v think_v that_o god_n wrong_v they_o before_o and_o now_o do_v but_o right_v they_o but_o when_o god_n have_v humble_v they_o so_o far_o that_o they_o acknowledge_v his_o justice_n in_o afflict_v they_o and_o their_o own_o desert_n to_o be_v utter_o destroy_v and_o confess_v that_o it_o be_v his_o mere_a mercy_n they_o be_v not_o consume_v and_o humble_v themselves_o under_o his_o mighty_a hand_n and_o now_o if_o the_o judgement_n be_v take_v off_o and_o his_o wrath_n blow_v over_o than_o they_o give_v he_o the_o praise_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o judgement_n thus_o you_o see_v why_o of_o necessity_n it_o be_v require_v now_o let_v we_o see_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o order_n of_o it_o why_o it_o be_v require_v thus_o in_o the_o first_o place_n it_o be_v the_o first_o condition_n here_o there_o be_v something_o in_o the_o order_n and_o to_o first_o be_v say_v by_o way_n of_o reason_n for_o it_o and_o the_o reason_n in_o general_n be_v because_o nothing_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n till_o the_o heart_n be_v humble_v you_o may_v pray_v which_o be_v another_o condition_n and_o you_o may_v hear_v etc._n etc._n but_o all_o you_o do_v be_v but_o lose_a labour_n unless_o it_o come_v from_o a_o break_a heart_n for_o first_o that_o be_v alone_o a_o fit_a sacrifice_n for_o god_n without_o 17._o which_o act_n no_o sacrifice_n be_v accept_v this_o you_o may_v see_v psalm_n 51._o 16_o 17._o thou_o desire_v not_o sacrifice_v else_o i_o will_v give_v it_o thou_o thou_o delight_v not_o in_o burn_a offering_n the_o sacrifice_n of_o before_o we_o be_v fit_a to_o offer_v a_o sacrifice_n acceptable_a we_o must_v be_v priest_n and_o we_o become_v not_o priest_n to_o god_n till_o we_o have_v offer_v ourselves_o first_o to_o god_n as_o a_o sacrifice_n 2_o cor._n 8._o 5._o and_o that_o we_o be_v not_o till_o we_o ourselves_o be_v slay_v and_o break_v 5._o and_o so_o make_v a_o sacrifice_n nothing_o be_v accept_v till_o the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o until_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v the_o we_o spirit_n of_o god_n dwell_v not_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o therefore_o what_o he_o do_v till_o then_o savour_v not_o of_o the_o spirit_n but_o a_o carnal_a heart_n and_o so_o be_v not_o acceptable_a till_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v he_o keep_v the_o door_n shut_v upon_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o spirit_n unto_o which_o no_o promise_n be_v make_v and_o which_o may_v be_v find_v in_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n the_o second_o which_o be_v
the_o fruit_n of_o sanctification_n which_o be_v mean_v here_o and_o unto_o which_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v these_o go_v both_o together_o in_o the_o godly_a and_o he_o that_o have_v the_o second_o never_o want_v the_o first_o in_o some_o measure_n more_o or_o less_o though_o many_o have_v the_o first_o that_o have_v not_o the_o second_o now_o the_o first_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o be_v bold_a and_o other_o that_o estate_n be_v not_o humble_v go_v on_o bold_o and_o be_v punish_v as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o fool_n in_o the_o proverb_n it_o make_v a_o man_n consider_v his_o estate_n which_o he_o never_o consideration_n do_v before_o as_o the_o prodigal_n come_v to_o himself_o that_o be_v enter_v into_o a_o serious_a consideration_n of_o his_o estate_n before_o a_o man_n think_v himself_o in_o a_o good_a estate_n little_o imagine_v he_o be_v in_o the_o gall_n of_o bitterness_n but_o this_o work_n show_v he_o his_o poverty_n and_o that_o he_o be_v altogether_o naked_a and_o that_o he_o have_v nothing_o to_o sustain_v he_o as_o the_o prodigal_n see_v he_o have_v not_o no_o worth_n at_o all_o in_o he_o and_o this_o first_o work_n of_o humiliation_n be_v wrought_v law_n by_o the_o law_n and_o the_o curse_n thereof_o which_o say_v in_o his_o hear_n curse_a be_v he_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o do_v they_o by_o the_o law_n i_o say_v which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n whereof_o all_o particular_a rule_n be_v branch_n and_o by_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o which_o be_v all_o branch_n of_o that_o great_a curse_n the_o one_o be_v as_o the_o lightning_n to_o discover_v sin_n the_o other_o like_o the_o thunderbolt_n that_o strike_v the_o heart_n with_o fear_n of_o god_n judgement_n the_o one_o be_v like_o the_o indictment_n the_o other_o as_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o judge_n i_o put_v both_o these_o together_o because_o both_o go_v to_o humble_v a_o man_n the_o law_n be_v like_o the_o taskmaster_n of_o egypt_n that_o command_v the_o israelite_n to_o simile_n do_v the_o work_n but_o give_v they_o no_o straw_n so_o the_o law_n tell_v we_o this_o and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v and_o bind_v we_o to_o do_v it_o but_o give_v we_o no_o strength_n and_o so_o thereby_o discover_v our_o sinfulness_n and_o unability_n to_o any_o good_a and_o then_o as_o the_o taskmaster_n do_v beat_v they_o that_o fail_v of_o their_o tale_n so_o come_v the_o curse_n and_o strike_v they_o dead_a that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o do_v the_o law_n and_o these_o two_o put_v together_o work_v this_o legal_a humiliation_n what_o neither_o by_o the_o law_n be_v mean_v only_o those_o ten_o word_n speak_v in_o horeb_n but_o together_o with_o the_o explanation_n of_o they_o as_o we_o find_v they_o expound_v in_o the_o prophet_n and_o the_o whole_a scripture_n so_o that_o by_o the_o law_n be_v mean_v that_o rectitude_n which_o the_o whole_a scripture_n do_v require_v now_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n be_v lay_v to_o our_o heart_n the_o rectitude_n of_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v with_o the_o crookedness_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o life_n and_o thereby_o we_o come_v to_o see_v how_o that_o the_o least_o sin_n be_v forbid_v and_o that_o the_o least_o duty_n must_v not_o be_v omit_v and_o that_o we_o must_v give_v a_o account_n for_o every_o idle_a word_n and_o every_o lustful_a thought_n and_o motion_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o s._n paul_n when_o humble_v see_v lust_n to_o be_v sin_n and_o then_o we_o come_v to_o see_v withal_o the_o curse_n due_a to_o the_o lease_n this_o humble_v a_o man_n and_o unto_o this_o be_v further_a require_v the_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n join_v therewith_o without_o which_o the_o law_n humiliation_n do_v not_o humble_a a_o man_n who_o be_v therefore_o call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n because_o he_o enlighten_v a_o man_n to_o see_v his_o bondage_n and_o slavery_n to_o sin_n and_o satan_n and_o his_o subjection_n to_o god_n wrath_n not_o that_o he_o and_o make_v he_o believe_v the_o threaten_n denounce_v against_o they_o than_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v and_o not_o before_o and_o yet_o though_o these_o threaten_n be_v propound_v by_o the_o word_n and_o make_v effectual_a by_o the_o spirit_n yet_o usual_o some_o affliction_n put_v life_n into_o they_o as_o we_o see_v in_o manasses_n and_o also_o in_o s._n paul_n who_o be_v first_o strike_v off_o his_o horse_n to_o the_o ground_n and_o in_o the_o jailer_n who_o think_v very_o all_o his_o prisoner_n go_v for_o who_o his_o own_o life_n must_v have_v be_v answerable_a so_o as_o he_o will_v have_v kill_v himself_o sometime_o a_o real_a affliction_n sometime_o a_o imaginary_a one_o a_o apprehension_n of_o judgement_n shame_n poverty_n misery_n do_v god_n use_v to_o put_v life_n into_o the_o threaten_n and_o they_o put_v life_n into_o the_o law_n and_o then_o the_o law_n be_v bring_v home_o to_o the_o conscience_n and_o so_o sin_n be_v bring_v to_o light_n for_o when_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o misery_n than_o they_o be_v often_o bring_v to_o to_o inquiry_n into_o the_o law_n of_o god_n to_o find_v what_o shall_v be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o when_o the_o law_n be_v bring_v home_o to_o the_o conscience_n than_o sin_n be_v make_v alive_a saint_n paul_n say_v roman_n 7._o sin_n appear_v to_o be_v sin_n 7._o which_o before_o be_v as_o colour_n in_o the_o dark_a and_o sin_n be_v make_v alive_a than_o i_o die_v say_v paul_n there_o that_o be_v he_o apprehend_v himself_o a_o dead_a man_n in_o which_o be_v a_o discovery_n of_o sin_n and_o our_o subjection_n to_o example_n mention_v before_o especial_o 15._o of_o the_o prodigal_n luk._n 15._o he_o come_v to_o this_o conclusion_n if_o i_o stay_v here_o i_o die_v for_o hunger_n but_o in_o my_o father_n house_n there_o be_v bread_n enough_o here_o be_v hope_n that_o breed_v this_o resolution_n i_o will_v go_v home_o and_o say_v to_o my_o father_n i_o have_v sin_v against_o heaven_n and_o against_o thou_o etc._n etc._n here_o be_v that_o true_a humiliation_n we_o speak_v of_o so_o manasses_n he_o humble_v himself_o great_o out_o of_o a_o hope_n of_o mercy_n for_o a_o man_n come_v not_o to_o this_o active_a humiliation_n wherein_o he_o kind_o humble_v himself_o unless_o he_o have_v hope_n of_o mercy_n and_o the_o beginning_n of_o faith_n be_v with_o a_o hope_n of_o mercy_n which_o set_v a_o man_n a_o work_n to_o go_v to_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n i_o have_v commit_v such_o and_o such_o sin_n but_o i_o will_v return_v to_o they_o no_o more_o i_o be_o worthy_a of_o nothing_o now_o there_o be_v four_o several_a composition_n or_o it_o four_o pair_n of_o ingredient_n that_o have_v influence_n into_o this_o second_o kind_n of_o humiliation_n to_o cause_v we_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o 1_o payr_n a_o hope_n of_o mercy_n as_o well_o as_o a_o sense_n of_o misery_n sery_n that_o whereas_o before_o we_o do_v look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o severe_a judge_n we_o look_v now_o on_o he_o as_o one_o willing_a to_o receive_v we_o both_o be_v requisite_a sense_n of_o misery_n only_o bring_v a_o man_n but_o to_o himself_o as_o the_o prodigal_n first_o be_v say_v to_o come_v to_o himself_o i_o shall_v starve_v and_o die_v if_o i_o stay_v here_o but_o in_o my_o father_n house_n be_v bread_n enough_o he_o look_v to_o that_o alsufficient_a fullness_n that_o be_v in_o god_n to_o supply_v his_o want_n the_o creature_n whilst_o it_o find_v any_o thing_n in_o itself_o it_o will_v stand_v upon_o its_o own_o bottom_n and_o not_o be_v humble_v but_o when_o it_o find_v nothing_o in_o its_o self_n but_o emptiness_n than_o it_o begin_v to_o seek_v out_o for_o a_o bottom_n which_o it_o see_v to_o be_v in_o god_n alone_o it_o go_v out_o to_o he_o for_o man_n will_v not_o be_v draw_v off_o from_o their_o own_o bottom_n till_o they_o see_v another_o bottom_n to_o stand_v upon_o 3_o there_o must_v be_v a_o sense_n of_o a_o man_n own_o sinfulness_n righteousness_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n his_o righteousness_n and_o so_o a_o light_n come_v in_o that_o discover_v both_o thus_o when_o s._n paul_n be_v humble_v there_o be_v a_o light_n shine_v about_o he_o which_o be_v a_o outward_a symbol_n of_o that_o new_a light_n which_o shine_v within_o he_o of_o christ_n and_o his_o own_o sinfulness_n a_o sense_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n join_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o a_o man_n unkindness_n unto_o god_n unkindness_n whereby_o we_o look_v upon_o sin_n as_o injury_n do_v to_o god_n and_o a_o unkindness_n show_v therein_o and_o now_o let_v we_o see_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o work_n or_o part_n of_o humiliation_n that_o we_o may_v matter_n further_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o humble_v ourselves_o and_o first_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o matter_n they_o be_v conversant_a about_o in_o that_o first_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v proper_o but_o for_o the_o punishment_n a_o man_n indeed_o be_v humble_v for_o sin_n yet_o principal_o as_o it_o have_v relation_n to_o punishment_n it_o be_v guilt_n work_v on_o he_o he_o be_v not_o humble_v for_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n and_o his_o holiness_n but_o as_o contrary_a to_o himself_o and_o his_o own_o good_a and_o thus_o we_o be_v not_o humble_v till_o we_o come_v to_o love_n god_n and_o to_o have_v a_o light_n discover_v the_o holiness_n and_o purity_n of_o his_o nature_n which_o one_o that_o be_v save_o humble_v have_v wrought_v in_o he_o they_o differ_v in_o their_o ground_n and_o principle_n whence_o they_o arise_v ground_n the_o first_o arise_v sense_n of_o hell_n and_o death_n let_v into_o his_o conscience_n to_o be_v wound_v and_o apprehensive_a of_o it_o but_o the_o other_o arise_v from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n kindle_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o hope_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n they_o differ_v in_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n that_o work_v they_o the_o one_o be_v wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n cause_n by_o a_o enlighten_v mere_o to_o see_v his_o bondage_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o one_o that_o be_v in_o bondage_n fear_v god_n as_o a_o master_n and_o he_o have_v no_o further_a light_n than_o thus_o to_o see_v god_n as_o a_o judge_n but_o this_o other_o be_v wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n make_v the_o gospel_n also_o effectual_a discover_v god_n as_o a_o father_n they_o differ_v in_o their_o effect_n as_o the_o one_o drive_v a_o man_n from_o god_n but_o this_o fect_n latter_a cause_v a_o man_n to_o go_v to_o god_n and_o to_o seek_v christ_n it_o work_v that_o affection_n to_o christ_n that_o the_o 1_o church_n in_o the_o canticle_n have_v to_o he_o who_o will_v not_o give_v over_o seek_v he_o till_o she_o have_v find_v he_o who_o her_o soul_n do_v love_v though_o there_o be_v twenty_o obstacle_n in_o the_o way_n yet_o the_o soul_n have_v no_o rest_n as_o a_o stone_n have_v no_o rest_n till_o it_o be_v in_o its_o own_o centre_n so_o nor_o this_o soul_n thus_o humble_v but_o in_o god_n and_o therefore_o give_v not_o over_o seek_v he_o though_o it_o have_v never_o so_o many_o denial_n the_o first_o breed_v death_n a_o acedia_fw-la a_o deadness_n and_o 2_o listlesnesse_n it_o make_v a_o man_n as_o a_o log_n that_o move_v not_o to_o god_n in_o prayer_n so_o it_o wrought_v in_o nabal_n and_o achitophel_n it_o breed_v such_o discouragement_n as_o often_o humiliation_n it_o serve_v to_o make_v thou_o willing_a to_o match_v with_o christ_n we_o be_v christ_n spokesman_n and_o woo_v you_o every_o sabbath_n day_n but_o we_o find_v all_o the_o world_n like_o they_o christ._n who_o think_v themselves_o beautiful_a and_o rich_a and_o that_o they_o have_v match_n enough_o who_o though_o they_o be_v content_v to_o have_v christ_n for_o their_o husband_n in_o heaven_n yet_o not_o on_o the_o earth_n with_o all_o those_o cross_n they_o must_v take_v he_o with_o now_o humiliation_n come_v and_o make_v man_n willing_a when_o a_o man_n come_v to_o see_v and_o say_v i_o have_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o i_o as_o i_o imagine_v no_o riches_n etc._n etc._n but_o i_o be_o in_o debt_n and_o shall_v be_v arrest_v and_o lay_v in_o prison_n and_o my_o life_n must_v go_v for_o it_o unless_o christ_n will_v marry_v i_o in_o that_o a_o man_n see_v he_o shall_v be_v keep_v from_o all_o arrest_n by_o he_o this_o make_v a_o man_n willing_a to_o match_v with_o christ_n yea_o glad_a though_o he_o have_v many_o cross_n follow_v in_o this_o life_n upon_o the_o marriage_n now_o therefore_o if_o thou_o find_v this_o wrought_v that_o thou_o can_v dare_v not_o neglect_v they_o and_o this_o thou_o have_v experience_n of_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o thy_o life_n then_o sure_o this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n have_v be_v in_o thy_o heart_n though_o thou_o see_v not_o the_o fire_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v the_o heat_n it_o have_v be_v there_o for_o these_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o it_o and_o as_o i_o speak_v this_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o those_o that_o have_v not_o feel_v such_o violent_a sorrow_n so_o let_v i_o on_o the_o contrary_n say_v to_o other_o who_o it_o may_v be_v have_v have_v such_o fit_n of_o sorrow_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v a_o unwillingnes_n to_o submit_v thus_o to_o christ_n find_v thy_o neck_n stiff_a to_o the_o lord_n yoke_n and_o such_o a_o unbrokennesse_n in_o thou_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o live_v without_o satisfy_v this_o or_o that_o lust_n but_o can_v sin_v and_o bear_v it_o out_o well_o enough_o let_v thy_o sorrow_n have_v be_v never_o so_o great_a and_o now_o they_o be_v past_a and_o go_v and_o be_v not_o right_a let_v man_n therefore_o examine_v themselves_o by_o the_o effect_n for_o man_n be_v deceive_v on_o both_o side_n and_o then_o 1_o use_v be_v for_o exhortation_n to_o stir_v man_n lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n and_o prize_v he_o the_o more_o he_o go_v on_o to_o apprehend_v his_o sin_n and_o be_v empty_v of_o himself_o and_o though_o a_o man_n take_v christ_n true_o at_o his_o first_o conversion_n yet_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o prize_v he_o when_o a_o husband_n take_v a_o wife_n though_o at_o their_o feast_n marriage_n there_o be_v such_o love_n between_o they_o as_o they_o will_v have_v choose_v each_o other_o before_o any_o other_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o so_o as_o this_o their_o love_n may_v admit_v degree_n after_o marriage_n they_o may_v see_v more_o ground_n of_o love_v each_o other_o more_o so_o that_o though_o the_o match_n be_v make_v yet_o they_o may_v be_v more_o confirm_v in_o their_o choice_n which_o may_v be_v make_v more_o full_a and_o absolute_a so_o towards_o christ_n the_o will_n and_o affection_n may_v be_v wind_v up_o to_o a_o high_a peg_n which_o be_v do_v by_o a_o further_a degree_n of_o humiliation_n what_o be_v faith_n but_o a_o lay_v hold_n of_o christ_n now_o the_o empty_a the_o hand_n be_v the_o further_a what_o hold_v it_o take_v and_o the_o more_o we_o be_v take_v off_o our_o own_o bottom_n the_o further_o we_o be_v after_o christ_n and_o you_o will_v drink_v deep_o of_o the_o fountain_n of_o life_n and_o draw_v more_o sap_n from_o he_o and_o second_o it_o increase_v your_o love_n for_o thereby_o love_n we_o come_v to_o see_v ourselves_o more_o behold_v to_o god_n as_o have_v a_o great_a debt_n forgive_v we_o what_o make_v mary_n love_n much_o but_o because_o she_o be_v sensible_a much_o be_v forgive_v but_o after_o converse_v and_o acquaintance_n with_o the_o person_n she_o like_v the_o person_n himself_o so_o well_o that_o she_o be_v content_a to_o have_v he_o though_o she_o shall_v have_v nothing_o with_o he_o and_o so_o she_o give_v her_o full_a and_o free_a consent_n to_o he_o and_o the_o match_n come_v to_o be_v make_v up_o between_o they_o out_o of_o true_a and_o sincere_a free_a love_n and_o like_n so_o it_o be_v here_o man_n begin_v at_o first_o to_o consider_v their_o own_o misery_n most_o and_o that_o if_o they_o shall_v apply_v themselves_o to_o other_o thing_n as_o himself_o then_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o seek_v his_o presence_n to_o seek_v he_o for_o our_o husband_n though_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v remove_v from_o he_o and_o now_o the_o match_n be_v make_v she_o have_v this_o husband_n i_o live_v in_o a_o house_n well_o furnish_v and_o i_o have_v many_o convenience_n i_o enjoy_v not_o only_o my_o husband_n person_n but_o with_o many_o addition_n so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o though_o the_o lord_n alone_o be_v sufficient_a reward_n so_o as_o if_o we_o have_v nothing_o else_o we_o will_v never_o go_v back_o of_o our_o choice_n yet_o we_o have_v many_o who_o christ_n and_o god_n be_v consider_v the_o person_n of_o they_o and_o so_o choose_v they_o as_o a_o father_n and_o a_o husband_n to_o live_v and_o die_v with_o and_o then_o second_o he_o be_v to_o consider_v what_o he_o shall_v have_v with_o he_o yea_o to_o look_n upon_o the_o benefit_n themselves_o but_o chief_o to_o this_o end_n and_o so_o as_o that_o they_o may_v stir_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o love_v he_o the_o better_a and_o not_o simple_o as_o benefit_n only_o so_o as_o to_o say_v in_o your_o heart_n though_o he_o be_v most_o beautiful_a in_o his_o person_n and_o so_o though_o he_o forgive_v the_o sin_n yet_o he_o may_v go_v on_o to_o punish_v for_o his_o name_n sake_n 2._o when_o we_o be_v not_o thorough_o humble_v for_o there_o may_v be_v true_a repentance_n when_o our_o lust_n be_v not_o enough_o mortify_v god_n do_v it_o that_o the_o heart_n may_v be_v the_o more_o cleanse_v thus_o david_n psal._n 51._o cry_n out_o of_o his_o break_a bone_n and_o why_o his_o heart_n he_o say_v be_v not_o cleanse_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v for_o a_o clean_a heart_n and_o a_o right_a spirit_n this_o afford_v matter_n of_o comfort_n when_o any_o affliction_n judgement_n be_v upon_o we_o we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v we_o shall_v never_o be_v rid_v of_o it_o but_o if_o thou_o can_v get_v but_o thy_o heart_n humble_v and_o thy_o lust_n mortify_v god_n will_v if_o the_o sin_n be_v remove_v he_o will_v be_v willing_a also_o no_o man_n be_v in_o a_o hard_a case_n but_o he_o that_o have_v a_o hard_a heart_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v in_o all_o condition_n that_o what_o be_v at_o present_a will_v always_o continue_v if_o we_o be_v in_o prosperity_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v as_o they_o in_o the_o prophet_n that_o to_o morrow_n will_v be_v as_o to_o day_n and_o much_o more_o abundant_a so_o if_o in_o affliction_n to_o say_v also_o that_o as_o it_o be_v to_o day_n it_o will_v be_v to_o morrow_n and_o so_o for_o ever_o but_o know_v that_o if_o you_o humble_v yourselves_o and_o turn_v from_o the_o evil_a way_n god_n will_v take_v away_o the_o calamity_n there_o be_v a_o excellent_a place_n for_o this_o 1_o pet._n 5._o 6._o humble_a yourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o he_o shall_v exalt_v you_o in_o due_a time_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v by_o god_n let_v he_o humble_v himself_o and_o then_o god_n
