to_o come_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o father_n so_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o also_o so_o to_o pray_v in_o the_o very_a same_o language_n to_o come_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o father_n as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o lord_n christ_n but_o let_v we_o strive_v for_o a_o distinct_a and_o a_o particular_a assurance_n that_o he_o be_v our_o own_o father_n that_o he_o be_v so_o to_o we_o in_o special_a and_o that_o we_o be_v among_o the_o number_n of_o his_o child_n that_o we_o may_v look_v upon_o he_o so_o and_o confident_o call_v he_o so_o when_o we_o be_v pour_v out_o our_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o so_o expect_v the_o love_n and_o mercy_n of_o a_o father_n from_o he_o and_o to_o this_o very_a end_n as_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o son_n be_v send_v abroad_o into_o our_o heart_n to_o what_o end_n why_o to_o make_v we_o cry_v abba_n father_n gal._n 4.6_o that_o be_v to_o make_v we_o pray_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o father_n while_o other_o come_v to_o god_n as_o to_o christ_n etc._n etc._n oh_o how_o do_v it_o concern_v use_v 3_o we_o then_o my_o brethren_n not_o to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o with_o the_o frail_a life_n of_o nature_n which_o may_v expire_v upon_o a_o sudden_a and_o let_v we_o sink_v into_o eternal_a death_n but_o to_o make_v out_o after_o the_o life_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v above_o the_o reach_n and_o power_n of_o death_n which_o will_v not_o fail_v we_o but_o endure_v for_o ever_o we_o all_o have_v spark_n of_o immortality_n within_o we_o and_o we_o have_v thought_n aspire_v to_o eternity_n we_o will_v not_o die_v if_o we_o can_v choose_v oh_o let_v we_o labour_v then_o my_o brethren_n for_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o be_v a_o eternal_a life_n the_o life_n of_o nature_n be_v a_o fade_a thing_n it_o may_v be_v go_v upon_o a_o sudden_a and_o it_o be_v a_o sad_a and_o dreadful_a thing_n for_o a_o eternal_a soul_n to_o have_v nothing_o else_o between_o it_o and_o eternal_a woe_n and_o torture_v but_o such_o a_o fickle_a and_o perishable_a life_n which_o the_o next_o minute_n may_v be_v do_v and_o let_v he_o drop_v away_o to_o hell_n for_o ever_o oh_o how_o sudden_o may_v such_o perish_v and_o come_v to_o a_o fearful_a end_n but_o if_o we_o live_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o last_a and_o abide_v life_n and_o though_o the_o natural_a life_n decay_n and_o though_o the_o body_n die_v and_o rot_v and_o turn_v to_o dust_n and_o putrefaction_n yet_o this_o will_v flourish_v and_o grow_v strong_a still_o till_o it_o be_v perfect_v and_o make_v consummate_v in_o the_o life_n of_o glory_n and_o why_o then_o be_v our_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n whole_o spend_v to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v this_o transitory_a life_n with_o thing_n that_o perish_v in_o the_o use_n which_o yet_o when_o all_o be_v do_v will_v fail_v and_o come_v to_o dissolution_n but_o never_o strive_v for_o the_o attainment_n of_o that_o life_n which_o be_v eternal_a it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a thing_n my_o brethren_n that_o the_o divine_a intention_n of_o eternal_a mind_n shall_v be_v lay_v out_o on_o nothing_o else_o but_o perishable_a thing_n now_o that_o you_o may_v attain_v spirit_n who_o have_v all_o one_o head_n one_o god_n one_o lord_n one_o faith_n one_o hope_n one_o baptism_n to_o be_v at_o unity_n among_o themselves_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o task_n almost_o insuperable_a to_o have_v peace_n with_o all_o the_o world_n to_o say_v the_o truth_n it_o be_v impossible_a as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n insinuate_v in_o his_o exhortation_n rom._n 12.18_o if_o it_o other_o who_o reserve_v themselves_o refrain_v communion_n each_o with_o other_o withhold_v their_o counsel_n comfort_n prayer_n be_v very_o weak_a by_o this_o mean_n and_o easy_a to_o be_v overcome_v and_o therefore_o one_o observe_v very_o well_o upon_o this_o prayer_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o my_o text_n that_o his_o disciple_n be_v preserve_v and_o keep_v by_o unity_n holy_a father_n keep_v they_o through_o thy_o own_o name_n and_o to_o this_o end_n let_v they_o be_v one_o as_o we_o be_v as_o if_o the_o only_a way_n to_o keep_v they_o and_o preserve_v they_o be_v to_o make_v they_o one_o his_o father_n in_o behalf_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n sanctify_v they_o through_o thy_o truth_n and_o then_o we_o have_v this_o explication_n in_o which_o he_o show_v what_o he_o intend_v by_o truth_n viz._n the_o word_n of_o god_n sanctify_v they_o with_o thy_o truth_n thy_o word_n be_v truth_n begin_v we_o with_o the_o supplication_n in_o which_o you_o may_v take_v notice_n with_o i_o of_o these_o two_o particular_n first_o the_o thing_n desire_v sanctification_n sanctify_v they_o say_v our_o saviour_n and_o then_o the_o outward_a instrumental_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o pray_v the_o conversion_n of_o their_o hearer_n and_o to_o the_o work_n of_o unfeigned_a faith_n and_o grace_n in_o they_o you_o may_v behold_v three_o thousand_o sinner_n wrought_v upon_o by_o one_o before_o he_o to_o bring_v down_o every_o high_a exalt_a thought_n to_o make_v the_o mountain_n level_v with_o the_o valley_n he_o must_v be_v like_o a_o harbinger_n to_o ride_v before_o and_o take_v up_o room_n for_o jesus_n christ_n to_o write_v his_o name_n upon_o the_o heart_n this_o heart_n be_v take_v up_o for_o christ_n to_o cause_v these_o everlasting_a door_n to_o be_v set_v open_a to_o that_o they_o may_v admire_v christ_n that_o the_o thought_n and_o affection_n of_o man_n may_v be_v carry_v to_o he_o they_o must_v not_o preach_v themselves_o but_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 2_o cor._n 4_o 5._o use_v 4_o be_v it_o so_o that_o apostle_n minister_n etc._n etc._n then_o let_v the_o church_n be_v here_o direct_v and_o advise_v to_o prove_v those_o when_o indeed_o he_o never_o send_v they_o they_o be_v messenger_n of_o satan_n and_o not_o of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o it_o concern_v the_o church_n to_o prove_v they_o well_o who_o come_v with_o these_o pretence_n and_o to_o sift_v they_o to_o the_o bottom_n that_o they_o may_v know_v not_o the_o speech_n of_o these_o man_n only_o but_o the_o power_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 1_o cor._n 4_o 19_o and_o here_o you_o be_v not_o only_o to_o consider_v whether_o they_o have_v obtain_v the_o election_n and_o ordination_n of_o the_o church_n or_o no_o for_o many_o reach_n to_o this_o who_o be_v never_o send_v by_o christ_n but_o there_o be_v other_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v i_o shall_v lay_v they_o down_o in_o order_n they_o that_o be_v send_v by_o jesus_n christ_n be_v furnish_v his_o priesthood_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v co-extended_n and_o so_o for_o whosoever_o he_o be_v a_o priest_n to_o sacrifice_v for_o they_o also_o he_o be_v a_o priest_n to_o intercede_v as_o he_o apparent_o imply_v the_o absence_n of_o inherent_a righteousness_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o shall_v be_v raise_v again_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o we_o once_o enjoy_v in_o adam_n in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n which_o shall_v be_v do_v you_o know_v my_o brethren_n in_o the_o other_o paradise_n in_o heaven_n in_o the_o state_n of_o glory_n this_o justify_v faith_n shall_v cease_v at_o least_o with_o reference_n to_o the_o receive_n of_o jesus_n the_o lord_n our_o righteousness_n because_o we_o shall_v have_v righteousness_n enough_o in_o heaven_n of_o our_o own_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o that_o memorable_a place_n 1_o cor._n 13._o ult_n and_o now_o abide_v faith_n hope_n and_o charity_n now_o they_o abide_v conceive_v it_o in_o the_o present_a life_n they_o all_o continue_v for_o that_o be_v his_o intention_n there_o but_o the_o chief_a of_o these_o be_v charity_n the_o chief_a in_o regard_n of_o permanency_n and_o and_o hope_n shall_v fail_v and_o be_v take_v both_o away_o be_v christ_n the_o object_n of_o a_o true_a believer_n faith_n this_o then_o as_o it_o discover_v use_v 3_o the_o defect_n and_o imperfection_n of_o inherent_a righteousness_n so_o the_o perfection_n of_o impute_a righteousness_n as_o the_o defect_n of_o sanctification_n so_o the_o perfection_n of_o justification_n it_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n which_o we_o fetch_v in_o by_o faith_n and_o that_o you_o know_v be_v absolute_a and_o accomplish_a righteousness_n and_o this_o administer_v incomparable_a sweet_a and_o precious_a comfort_n to_o the_o saint_n who_o be_v so_o far_o deject_v with_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o their_o want_n as_o to_o conclude_v they_o be_v not_o justify_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n they_o be_v so_o full_a of_o imperfection_n and_o defect_n oh_o they_o come_v so_o far_o short_a their_o grace_n be_v so_o small_a and_o weak_a and_o their_o obedience_n be_v so_o slender_a that_o they_o resolve_v the_o lord_n will_v not_o accept_v and_o justify_v such_o wretched_a creature_n as_o they_o be_v indeed_o my_o brethren_n if_o our_o be_v justify_v and_o accept_v with_o the_o lord_n depend_v on_o the_o height_n and_o the_o perfection_n of_o inherent_a righteousness_n we_o have_v cause_n to_o be_v discourage_v but_o see_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n by_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o lord_n our_o righteousness_n by_o fetch_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o by_o perfect_v our_o own_o if_o we_o have_v take_v he_o we_o be_v complete_a in_o he_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v amid_o our_o many_o unallowed_a imperfection_n and_o defect_n and_o though_o we_o shall_v be_v humble_v for_o our_o fail_n with_o refererence_n to_o sanctification_n yet_o we_o shall_v not_o doubt_v ourselves_o and_o our_o estate_n with_o reference_n to_o justification_n for_o have_v once_o receive_v christ_n by_o faith_n we_o be_v complete_a in_o he_o though_o imperfect_a in_o ourselves_o if_o all_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n will_v make_v we_o righteous_a we_o be_v righteous_a for_o he_o be_v make_v to_o we_o righteousness_n 1_o cor._n 1.30_o oh_o how_o shall_v this_o support_v their_o droop_a spirit_n who_o pine_v away_o in_o endless_a sorrow_n for_o their_o fail_n and_o defect_n if_o they_o be_v sure_a they_o have_v lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n by_o faith_n they_o may_v conclude_v his_o righteousness_n be_v they_o and_o that_o be_v perfect_a though_o their_o own_o be_v weak_a and_o want_v and_o though_o they_o be_v that_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n their_o word_n as_o the_o publisher_n and_o penman_n of_o it_o not_o their_o word_n as_o the_o author_n of_o it_o for_o the_o apostle_n be_v the_o preacher_n and_o the_o writer_n though_o not_o the_o author_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o word_n our_o saviour_n make_v the_o instrument_n of_o faith_n in_o this_o place_n mark_v it_o not_o the_o prophet_n word_n but_o the_o apostle_n word_n their_o word_n they_o that_o shall_v believe_v on_o i_o through_o their_o word_n so_o that_o you_o see_v doctrine_n it_o be_v the_o gospel_n word_n that_o make_v believer_n the_o gospel_n be_v the_o instrumental_a mean_n of_o faith_n if_o faith_n be_v wrought_v in_o any_o soul_n it_o be_v by_o the_o apostle_n word_n the_o word_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n not_o of_o the_o old_a of_o the_o new_a covenant_n not_o of_o the_o old_a in_o brief_a not_o of_o the_o law_n but_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n show_v express_o rom._n 10.15_o 16_o 17._o how_o beautiful_a be_v the_o foot_n of_o they_o say_v he_o that_o preach_v the_o gospel_n but_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v the_o gospel_n for_o isaiah_n say_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n so_o then_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v viz._n by_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o hence_o the_o gospel_n be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n when_o you_o consider_v what_o these_o band_n be_v 1._o they_o have_v all_o one_o spirit_n and_o so_o in_o that_o respect_n be_v one_o i_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o spirit_n or_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n but_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n christ_n which_o be_v one_o dwell_v in_o all_o the_o saint_n at_o once_o and_o so_o make_v they_o one_o too_o yea_o let_v they_o be_v as_o distant_a as_o they_o will_n and_o as_o the_o formal_a reason_n of_o the_o union_n of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n natural_a consist_v not_o so_o much_o in_o contiguity_n as_o animation_n by_o the_o same_o soul_n so_o that_o if_o any_o part_n be_v mortify_v and_o if_o the_o soul_n give_v over_o to_o enliven_v it_o it_o be_v no_o more_o to_o be_v esteem_v a_o member_n notwithstanding_o its_o external_a and_o corporeal_a inherence_n to_o the_o body_n so_o though_o the_o saint_n be_v far_o from_o one_o another_o in_o regard_n of_o place_n yet_o they_o be_v close_o knit_v together_o by_o the_o same_o faith_n will_v make_v a_o union_n at_o a_o distance_n as_o well_o as_o if_o the_o person_n join_v be_v all_o together_o what_o do_v the_o the_o corporal_a or_o local_a presence_n of_o the_o party_n contribute_v to_o the_o union_n that_o be_v make_v by_o faith_n which_o be_v a_o spiritual_a and_o invisible_a thing_n and_o consequent_o join_v in_o a_o spiritual_a and_o invisible_a manner_n which_o no_o division_n or_o distance_n in_o regard_n of_o place_n can_v hinder_v 3._o they_o have_v all_o one_o heart_n and_o one_o affection_n and_o so_o in_o that_o respect_n be_v one_o the_o multitude_n of_o believer_n be_v of_o one_o heart_n act._n 4.32_o though_o they_o be_v multitude_n yet_o they_o have_v but_o one_o heart_n and_o when_o there_o be_v but_o one_o heart_n there_o be_v a_o great_a oness_n the_o understanding_n be_v the_o principle_n of_o speculation_n the_o heart_n the_o seat_n of_o love_n and_o of_o affection_n and_o the_o saint_n be_v so_o unite_v and_o link_v togther_o in_o affection_n as_o if_o they_o have_v among_o they_o but_o one_o common_a principle_n of_o this_o affection_n as_o if_o they_o have_v but_o one_o heart_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o faithful_a say_v that_o they_o be_v knit_v together_o in_o love_n col._n 2.2_o the_o term_n there_o use_v import_v such_o a_o knit_n as_o be_v between_o the_o divers_a part_n and_o piece_n of_o a_o building_n for_o so_o the_o saint_n though_o there_o be_v million_o of_o they_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o they_o be_v build_v up_o altogether_o to_o a_o spiritual_a house_n 1_o pet._n 2.5_o and_o love_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o mortar_n and_o the_o pin_n the_o ligament_n and_o tie_n of_o the_o connexion_n and_o elsewhere_o it_o be_v call_v a_o bond_n col._n 3.10_o above_o all_o these_o thing_n put_v on_o charity_n which_o be_v the_o bond_n of_o perfectness_n with_o which_o we_o be_v perfect_o join_v together_o 1_o cor._n 1.10_o now_o love_n will_v make_v a_o union_n at_o a_o distance_n as_o well_o as_o near_o at_o hand_n the_o nearness_n of_o the_o place_n simple_o consider_v in_o itself_o contribute_v nothing_o to_o the_o nearness_n and_o to_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o affection_n no_o love_n will_v reach_v a_o person_n at_o the_o other_o end_n of_o all_o the_o earth_n as_o well_o as_o if_o he_o be_v just_a by_o we_o in_o the_o very_a next_o room_n or_o in_o the_o very_a next_o dwelling_n you_o see_v both_o that_o and_o how_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o his_o disciple_n shall_v be_v one_o among_o themselves_o which_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n in_o the_o point_n but_o now_o there_o be_v a_o second_o branch_n he_o will_v not_o have_v they_o only_o to_o be_v one_o among_o themselves_o but_o he_o will_v have_v they_o also_o to_o be_v one_o in_o god_n this_o be_v the_o special_a thing_n for_o which_o he_o be_v a_o suitor_n to_o his_o father_n in_o my_o text_n that_o they_o may_v be_v all_o one_o as_o thou_o father_n be_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o thou_o that_o they_o also_o may_v be_v one_o in_o we_o not_o one_o among_o themselves_o alone_o but_o one_o in_o we_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a high_a thing_n now_o that_o you_o may_v the_o better_o know_v what_o christ_n intend_v in_o this_o particular_a you_o must_v consider_v that_o he_o speak_v to_o god_n the_o father_n as_o man_n and_o mediator_n in_o this_o place_n for_o he_o speak_v in_o prayer_n here_o and_o consequent_o when_o he_o say_v as_o thou_o father_n be_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o thou_o he_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o union_n which_o be_v between_o his_o father_n and_o himself_o as_o he_o be_v god_n for_o in_o that_o consideration_n the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v so_o in_o one_o another_o that_o they_o be_v the_o very_a same_o the_o same_o essence_n for_o so_o the_o union_n be_v identical_a though_o they_o
believe_v for_o the_o present_a or_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n if_o he_o have_v say_v i_o be_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o exclusive_o this_o will_v not_o have_v be_v proper_o apply_v to_o they_o which_o have_v believe_v in_o former_a time_n suppose_v that_o i_o be_o exclude_v i_o have_v be_v or_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n if_o he_o have_v say_v i_o shall_v he_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o this_o can_v not_o have_v be_v proper_o apply_v to_o they_o which_o have_v believe_v or_o do_v believe_v so_o that_o which_o way_n soever_o he_o have_v full_o set_v it_o down_o he_o have_v seem_v to_o exclude_v past_a believer_n or_o present_a believer_n or_o future_a believer_n which_o he_o have_v no_o intent_n to_o do_v and_o therefore_o he_o do_v purpo_n ely_z express_v it_o so_o as_o i_o conceive_v that_o he_o may_v take_v in_o all_o of_o they_o without_o exception_n i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o to_o which_o you_o may_v add_v have_v be_v be_v the_o operation_n and_o effect_n that_o be_v the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o especial_o by_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o grace_n that_o give_v they_o the_o denomination_n of_o believer_n and_o therefore_o christ_n be_v say_v express_o to_o dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n eph._n 3.17_o as_o for_o the_o second_o thing_n propose_v how_o god_n the_o father_n be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n for_o clear_v this_o you_o must_v remember_v that_o which_o have_v be_v often_o hint_v that_o god_n the_o father_n all_o along_o this_o prayer_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v now_o for_o the_o three_o and_o last_o particular_a propose_v how_o their_o be_v each_o in_o other_o do_v serve_v to_o this_o end_n mention_v in_o my_o text_n viz._n to_o make_v believer_n one_o yea_o but_o be_v god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n to_o this_o end_n yes_o my_o belove_a to_o this_o end_n god_n have_v never_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o mediator_n but_o that_o believer_n may_v be_v join_v to_o himself_o in_o and_o by_o and_o through_o christ_n true_o my_o belove_a the_o father_n have_v be_v in_o the_o son_n as_o god_n however_o so_o he_o be_v from_o everlasting_a but_o god_n have_v never_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o man_n and_o mediator_n but_o for_o effect_v this_o union_n so_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v god_n be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n the_o world_n of_o believer_n so_o i_o may_v say_v as_o well_o god_n be_v in_o christ_n unite_n the_o world_n the_o same_o world_n of_o believer_n to_o himself_o original_o they_o be_v disjoint_v and_o divide_v each_o from_o other_o and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o from_o god_n but_o down_o come_v christ_n and_o dwell_v in_o all_o of_o they_o together_o and_o down_o come_v god_n and_o dwell_v in_o christ_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v all_o one_o i_o in_o they_o and_o thou_o in_o i_o that_o they_o may_v be_v perfect_a in_o one_o not_o only_o that_o they_o may_v be_v one_o but_o that_o they_o may_v be_v
