there_o we_o be_v not_o at_o all_o to_o distinguish_v and_o hence_o as_o in_o case_n any_o of_o these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v include_v in_o and_o absolute_o insure_v by_o this_o promise_n we_o have_v no_o reason_n from_o the_o promise_n itself_o why_o we_o shall_v not_o conclude_v that_o they_o be_v all_o include_v in_o and_o insure_v by_o it_o so_o see_v it_o be_v certain_a they_o be_v not_o all_o include_v in_o and_o insure_v by_o it_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o conclude_v nor_o suppose_v that_o any_o be_v but_o second_o more_o particular_o and_o thus_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o true_a in_o respect_n of_o these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o vouchsafe_v for_o these_o several_a end_n and_o purpose_n before_o mention_v distinct_o consider_v first_o for_o those_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n vouchsafe_v for_o the_o effect_n and_o produce_v the_o first_o grace_n that_o these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n can_v be_v include_v in_o or_o insure_v by_o this_o promise_n be_v evident_a because_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o adult_n they_o be_v indispensible_o presuppose_v to_o a_o interest_n in_o it_o and_o the_o promise_n can_v secure_v to_o any_o a_o good_a that_o be_v indispensible_o require_v antecedent_n to_o a_o interest_n in_o it_o for_o than_o it_o will_v secure_v the_o good_a contain_v in_o it_o to_o these_o to_o who_o at_o present_a it_o do_v not_o appertain_v which_o be_v impossible_a for_o then_o a_o man_n must_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n before_o he_o have_v that_o which_o be_v indispensible_o necessary_a to_o his_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o it_o which_o be_v a_o absolute_a contradiction_n now_o if_o this_o promise_n do_v not_o secure_v these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o such_o it_o can_v be_v rational_o suppose_v to_o secure_v they_o to_o any_o other_o and_o consequent_o they_o can_v be_v include_v in_o or_o insure_v to_o any_o by_o it_o as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o second_o for_o those_o influence_n of_o the_o sppirit_n vouchsafe_v for_o the_o maintain_v the_o seed_n and_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n wherein_o it_o be_v already_o wrought_v whereby_o its_o union_n with_o christ_n be_v maintain_v that_o those_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o include_v in_o nor_o insure_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o be_v alike_o evident_a with_o the_o former_a and_o that_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n viz._n the_o necessary_a precedency_n of_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o christ_n and_o consequent_o of_o these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n nècessary_a to_o the_o maintain_n of_o that_o union_n at_o least_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n to_o its_o hold_v its_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n if_o that_o which_o you_o have_v hear_v from_o the_o beginning_n shall_v remain_v in_o you_o you_o also_o shall_v continue_v in_o the_o son_n and_o in_o the_o father_n 1_o john_n 2.24_o the_o remain_v or_o abide_v of_o the_o word_n viz._n in_o that_o effect_n or_o fruit_n of_o it_o habitual_a grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o condition_n of_o and_o consequent_o must_v necessary_o be_v consider_v as_o antecedent_n to_o at_o least_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n its_o union_n with_o and_o interest_n in_o both_o the_o son_n and_o the_o father_n hence_o shall_v these_o influence_n and_o operatious_a of_o the_o spirit_n be_v include_v in_o and_o insure_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o it_o will_v cease_v to_o be_v conditional_a and_o become_v a_o absolute_a promise_n and_o consequent_o discharge_v the_o people_n of_o god_n from_o all_o duty_n subordinate_a to_o their_o maintain_v their_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o interest_n in_o this_o promise_n to_o talk_v of_o a_o absolute_a promise_n which_o require_v duty_n on_o man_n part_n in_o order_n to_o his_o enjoy_v the_o good_a contain_v in_o it_o be_v a_o absolute_a contradiction_n 3._o three_o for_o the_o three_o head_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v influence_n and_o operation_n viz._n such_o as_o be_v vouchsase_v for_o the_o carry_v on_o and_o manage_v the_o further_o and_o high_a concern_v of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o various_a degree_n of_o sanctification_n assurance_n peace_n joy_n spiritual_a performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o like_a that_o these_o be_v not_o include_v in_o this_o grand_a promise_n of_o the_o covenant_n so_o as_o to_o be_v conser_v or_o absolute_o insure_v thereby_o as_o take_v absoulte_o and_o by_o itself_o to_o all_o that_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o it_o be_v evident_a from_o the_o undeniable_a experience_n of_o many_o if_o not_o most_v believer_n it_o be_v possible_a that_o true_a believer_n may_v for_o a_o time_n be_v so_o far_o desert_v as_o to_o enjoy_v only_o such_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o be_v simple_o and_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o the_o maintain_v the_o life_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o and_o that_o in_o the_o very_a habit_n and_o seed_n thereof_o which_o can_v not_o be_v in_o case_n these_o influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n vouchsafe_v for_o these_o high_a end_n and_o purpose_n be_v include_v in_o and_o absolute_o secure_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o so_o that_o the_o truth_n affirm_v be_v sufficient_o evident_a in_o this_o first_o instance_n none_o of_o the_o save_a influence_n or_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v include_v in_o this_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v a_o god_n to_o his_o people_n so_o as_o by_o it_o as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o to_o be_v conser_v upon_o or_o absolute_o insure_v to_o any_o interest_v in_o it_o obj._n but_o possible_o some_o may_v object_v that_o this_o promise_n seem_v to_o be_v call_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n gal._n 3.14_o and_o therefore_o sure_o it_o must_v necessary_o include_v at_o least_o some_o of_o the_o save_a influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o consequent_o secure_v they_o to_o all_o that_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o it_o answ_n that_o any_o of_o the_o save_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v include_v in_o this_o promise_n can_v be_v conclude_v from_o that_o scripture_n will_v appear_v by_o a_o brief_a view_n of_o the_o several_a interpretation_n that_o it_o will_v admit_v of_o and_o be_v put_v upon_o it_o by_o our_o best_a interpreter_n thus_o some_o conceive_v that_o a_o distinct_a good_a be_v intend_v in_o this_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o that_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n say_v to_o come_v upon_o the_o gentile_n through_o christ_n by_o the_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o good_a contain_v in_o this_o grand_a promise_n of_o the_o covenant_n viz._n that_o god_n will_v be_v a_o god_n to_o he_o and_o his_o seed_n but_o then_o by_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o conceive_v a_o further_a consequential_a good_a be_v intend_v viz._n the_o indwelling_a presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o he_o be_v to_o abraham_n and_o as_o consequential_a to_o their_o interest_n in_o this_o promise_n they_o be_v under_o another_o promise_n viz._n that_o of_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v here_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o appertain_v to_o adult_v believer_n consequential_a to_o abraham_n blessing_n be_v come_v upon_o they_o of_o this_o opinion_n be_v chrysostom_n of_o old_a and_o beza_n of_o late_a but_o other_o suppose_v that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o good_a be_v intend_v in_o both_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n and_o answerable_o that_o by_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v mean_v the_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n say_v to_o be_v come_v upon_o the_o gentile_n and_o take_v the_o word_n thus_o a_o twofold_a sense_n may_v be_v give_v of_o they_o first_o this_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n may_v be_v call_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n only_o to_o denote_v the_o nature_n or_o kind_n of_o that_o blessing_n promise_v it_o

not_o in_o the_o fullness_n of_o it_o by_o any_o one_o particular_a believer_n so_o in_o our_o present_a case_n the_o covenant_n as_o make_v with_o and_o promise_v as_o make_v to_o the_o church_n or_o house_n of_o israel_n as_o a_o collective_a body_n be_v indefinite_a they_o do_v not_o infallible_o secure_v the_o good_a contain_v in_o they_o to_o every_o individual_a member_n only_o such_o a_o good_a to_o the_o church_n in_o general_n and_o answerable_o every_o individual_a member_n stand_v night_n to_o and_o be_v a_o more_o especial_a object_n of_o they_o than_o those_o that_o be_v without_o and_o yet_o for_o the_o far_o clear_v up_o and_o confirm_v of_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v observe_v that_o that_o twofold_a good_a before_o mention_v intend_v in_o these_o promise_n be_v distinct_o promise_v to_o the_o church_n as_o a_o collective_a body_n 1._o first_o for_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n thus_o in_o that_o psal_n 147.17_o he_o have_v show_v his_o judgement_n unto_o jacob_n and_o his_o statute_n unto_o israel_n he_o have_v not_o do_v so_o to_o every_o nation_n i_o conceive_v we_o be_v to_o take_v these_o word_n not_o bare_o as_o historical_a of_o what_o god_n do_v for_o the_o church_n of_o the_o jew_n but_o promissory_a wherein_o god_n do_v gracious_o engage_v himself_o to_o vouchsafe_v such_o outward_a mean_n to_o his_o church_n throughout_o all_o age_n as_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a through_o the_o concur_v operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convey_v the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o himself_o in_o christ_n to_o and_o work_v grace_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o several_a member_n thereof_o however_o this_o seem_v evident_a that_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v not_o of_o god_n show_v his_o judgement_n to_o jacob_n and_o statute_n to_o israel_n as_o a_o privilege_n peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o jewish_a church_n but_o as_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o answerable_o declare_v what_o be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a privilege_n of_o the_o church_n throughout_o all_o age_n viz._n to_o enjoy_v the_o oracle_n of_o god_n or_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n tell_v the_o jew_n as_o than_o not_o unchurch_v that_o it_o be_v necessary_a or_o of_o necessity_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d that_o the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v first_o preach_v unto_o they_o act_n 13.46_o and_o why_o be_v this_o necessary_a or_o of_o necessity_n but_o because_o they_o yet_o appertain_v to_o the_o visible_a church_n shall_v while_o they_o so_o continue_v have_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o outward_a mean_n whereby_o the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o a_o work_n of_o grace_n may_v be_v communicate_v to_o and_o wrought_v in_o they_o god_n have_v grant_v that_o to_o his_o church_n as_o one_o of_o her_o great_a privilege_n here_o upon_o earth_n 2._o second_o for_o the_o effectual_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o their_o inseparable_a fruit_n and_o infallible_o secure_v to_o every_o individual_a to_o be_v of_o any_o body_n politic_a corporation_n or_o society_n unto_o which_o any_o peculiar_a grant_n do_v belong_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o great_a privilege_n and_o advantage_n though_o the_o good_a grant_v be_v not_o infallible_o secure_v to_o every_o individual_a member_n yet_o every_o one_o in_o particular_a be_v in_o a_o nigh_a and_o more_o particular_o and_o thus_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o these_o promise_n do_v yet_o in_o a_o more_o especial_a and_o peculiar_a manner_n belong_v to_o that_o part_n of_o or_o species_n of_o member_n in_o the_o visible_a church_n that_o consist_v in_o the_o seed_n of_o believer_n the_o adult_n be_v suppose_v already_o to_o have_v the_o first_o grace_n and_o therefore_o these_o promise_n at_o least_o as_o they_o hold_v forth_o the_o first_o grace_n have_v a_o more_o especial_a respect_n to_o the_o seed_n of_o believer_n hence_o we_o shall_v find_v promise_n of_o that_o twosold_a i_o will_v pour_v out_o my_o spirit_n who_o as_o pour_v out_o upon_o shall_v be_v a_o blessing_n to_o they_o and_o in_o this_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v employ_v the_o vouchsafement_n of_o the_o outward_a mean_n through_o and_o by_o which_o god_n do_v pour_v out_o his_o spirit_n upon_o his_o people_n the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o some_o way_n communicate_v unto_o man_n be_v the_o ministration_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o they_o 2_o cor._n 3.8_o and_o hence_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v necessary_o imply_v and_o include_v in_o it_o such_o a_o communication_n twofold_a good_a be_v exprefs_o and_o in_o terminis_fw-la promise_v my_o spirit_n which_o be_v upon_o thou_o and_o my_o word_n which_o i_o have_v put_v in_o thy_o mouth_n shall_v not_o depart_v out_o of_o thy_o mouth_n nor_o out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o thy_o seed_n nor_o out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o thy_o seed_n seed_n from_o henceforth_o and_o for_o ever_o say_v the_o lord_n it_o be_v a_o promise_n make_v to_o the_o universal_a church_n and_o declare_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n how_o and_o whereby_o god_n do_v uphold_v maintain_v and_o perpetuate_v his_o church_n in_o the_o world_n it_o christ_n and_o they_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o with_o that_o constitute_v between_o he_o and_o adult_n believer_n in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o covenant_n accept_v of_o the_o parent_n faith_n as_o absolute_o consider_v and_o not_o as_o require_v such_o and_o such_o condition_n that_o constitute_v this_o kind_n of_o union_n between_o christ_n and_o man_n be_v they_o adult_v or_o infant_n proper_a to_o the_o elect_a as_o it_o do_v not_o nevessary_o imply_v or_o infer_v election_n or_o that_o all_o these_o to_o who_o it_o be_v make_v be_v elect_v and_o consequent_o belove_v with_o the_o love_n of_o election_n so_o it_o doew_fw-mi not_o necessary_o include_v or_o secureany_v consequent_a love_n or_o favour_n that_o be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect._n this_o will_v appear_v if_o we_o consider_v what_o love_n and_o favour_n be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_n and_o that_o fall_v under_o a_o twofold_a consideration_n first_o as_o a_o love_n of_o beneficence_n second_o as_o a_o love_n of_o complacence_n for_o the_o first_o and_o thus_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v in_o a_o way_n of_o beneficence_n to_o the_o elect_n differ_v from_o that_o common_a love_n and_o favour_n vouchsase_v to_o man_n in_o general_a only_o in_o degree_n and_o those_o fruit_n and_o effect_n wherein_o it_o be_v express_v it_o be_v act_v more_o intense_o to_o speak_v of_o god_n after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o according_a to_o our_o shallow_a apprhension_n of_o he_o and_o in_o different_a effect_n and_o fruit_n than_o it_o be_v act_v and_o express_v towards_o man_n in_o general_a these_o effect_n and_o fruit_n which_o we_o be_v at_o present_a only_o concern_v in_o may_v in_o the_o general_n be_v reduce_v to_o these_o three_o head_n regeneration_n to_o a_o state_n of_o life_n preservation_n in_o that_o state_n and_o suture_a glorfication_n now_o none_o of_o these_o effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n this_o now_o that_o this_o first_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o that_o special_a love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_n be_v not_o necessarity_n include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o this_o promise_n be_v sufficiect_o evident_a from_o what_o have_v be_v already_o say_v therefore_o i_o shall_v add_v no_o more_o second_o for_o the_o latter_a viz._n the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v in_o a_o way_n of_o complacency_n and_o delight_n and_o under_o this_o head_n we_o may_v comprehend_v all_o those_o thing_n wherein_o this_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v express_v or_o whereby_o it_o be_v signify_v to_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v vouchsase_v as_o the_o signal_n manifestation_n of_o himself_o in_o christ_n in_o his_o smile_n upon_o the_o soul_n the_o shedding_n abroad_o of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o like_a now_o that_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v this_o way_n be_v not_o to_o their_o seed_n in_o general_a so_o that_o all_o thing_n consider_v that_o god_n shall_v grant_v the_o privilege_n assign_v to_o the_o seed_n of_o believer_n and_o yet_o after_o leave_v some_o of_o they_o to_o themselves_o and_o suffer_v they_o to_o forfeit_v their_o own_o mercy_n and_o final_o perish_v carry_v not_o the_o least_o improbability_n in_o it_o 3._o for_o that_o which_o may_v yet_o further_o be_v plead_v viz._n the_o improbability_n that_o any_o shall_v be_v in_o covenant_n with_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o yet_o have_v no_o benefit_n by_o he_o either_o in_o regard_n of_o
