father_n both_o of_o what_o mighty_a redemption_n he_o have_v wrought_v for_o we_o and_o what_o grace_n he_o have_v wrought_v in_o we_o this_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v testify_v even_o he_o that_o proceed_v from_o the_o father_n this_o be_v the_o comfort_n of_o god_n people_n thus_o we_o see_v both_o these_o point_n open_v to_o we_o how_o may_v we_o then_o employ_v and_o improve_v this_o sanctification_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o quest_n 3_o and_o which_o he_o keep_v and_o act_v in_o we_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o whereunto_o he_o bear_v witness_n how_o or_o to_o what_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n knit_v we_o unto_o christ_n and_o christ_n unto_o we_o he_o work_v faith_n in_o we_o to_o receive_v whatsoever_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o we_o and_o by_o the_o same_o faith_n christ_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o look_v unto_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o it_o and_o to_o it_o in_o he_o and_o as_o we_o look_v for_o our_o holiness_n to_o be_v perfect_a in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o we_o look_v for_o continual_a supply_n of_o it_o from_o he_o and_o this_o it_o be_v to_o make_v christ_n our_o sanctification_n when_o as_o whatsoever_o gift_n the_o lord_n give_v we_o we_o go_v not_o forth_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o may_v spring_v from_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o may_v captivate_v our_o conscience_n unto_o the_o law_n that_o may_v restrain_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o constrain_v we_o unto_o duty_n but_o such_o holiness_n spring_v not_o from_o union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o conscience_n of_o duty_n without_o sense_n of_o our_o need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o israelite_n at_o mount_n sinai_n deut._n 5.27_o go_v thou_o near_o say_v they_o to_o moses_n and_o hear_v all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v say_v and_o speak_v thou_o unto_o we_o all_o that_o the_o lord_n christ_n to_o be_v all_o in_o all_o in_o we_o and_o to_o we_o so_o shall_v we_o neither_o neglect_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o we_o nor_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n but_o shall_v give_v their_o due_a honour_n unto_o all_o of_o they_o together_o 2._o this_o may_v also_o teach_v all_o christian_n not_o to_o trust_v upon_o the_o gift_n of_o their_o holiness_n though_o they_o do_v spring_n from_o the_o holy_a gbost_n himself_o though_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v unchangeable_a though_o they_o spring_v from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o knit_v your_o soul_n in_o union_n with_o he_o yet_o whatsoever_o for_o a_o little_a further_o open_v of_o it_o 1._o trust_v not_o in_o any_o gift_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o duty_n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o strong_a christian_a that_o be_v able_a to_o put_v forth_o a_o good_a thought_n 2_o cor._n 3.5_o but_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n he_o that_o abide_v in_o i_o and_o i_o in_o he_o the_o same_o the_o flesh_n i_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n where_o he_o put_v it_o into_o his_o own_o experience_n why_o do_v he_o not_o live_v by_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o zeal_n etc._n etc._n yes_o true_o they_o be_v lively_a in_o he_o if_o ever_o in_o any_o man_n beside_o our_o bless_a saviour_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o never_o attribute_v life_n to_o any_o of_o these_o gift_n of_o he_o but_o if_o he_o speak_v of_o his_o life_n he_o make_v this_o his_o universal_a life_n i_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o i_o be_o i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v all_o thing_n through_o christ_n which_o strengthen_v i_o phil._n 4.13_o this_o be_v the_o true_a savour_n of_o a_o christian_a spirit_n that_o when_o gift_n be_v at_o the_o high_a the_o be_v true_o spiritual_a sanctification_n that_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v full_a of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n yet_o he_o be_v like_o a_o man_n in_o great_a penury_n as_o have_v nothing_o of_o himself_o this_o be_v a_o marvellous_a spiritual_a poverty_n and_o you_o shall_v ever_o find_v and_o i_o desire_v the_o lord_n will_v open_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n to_o know_v what_o i_o speak_v that_o if_o christian_n have_v fall_v their_o

measure_n and_o so_o we_o be_v all_o one_o mystical_a body_n and_o i_o can_v tell_v how_o better_a to_o compare_v it_o then_o to_o a_o musical_a instrument_n wherein_o though_o there_o be_v many_o pipe_n yet_o one_o blast_n of_o the_o bellows_n put_v breath_n into_o they_o all_o so_o that_o all_o of_o they_o at_o once_o break_v forth_o into_o a_o kind_n of_o melody_n and_o give_v a_o pleasant_a sound_n to_o the_o ear_n of_o those_o that_o stand_v by_o all_o of_o they_o do_v make_v but_o one_o instrument_n and_o one_o sound_n and_o yet_o variety_n of_o music_n so_o be_v this_o very_a case_n look_v at_o all_o the_o live_a member_n of_o christ_n they_o be_v all_o compact_a together_o and_o set_v into_o one_o stock_n and_o root_n by_o which_o mean_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o though_o they_o be_v many_o thousand_o yet_o they_o all_o make_v a_o melodious_a harmony_n in_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n therefore_o for_o the_o combine_a of_o we_o into_o the_o unity_n of_o one_o spirit_n necessary_a it_o be_v that_o the_o same_o spirit_n that_o breathe_v in_o the_o humane_a nature_n of_o christ_n shall_v breathe_v in_o we_o all_o and_o though_o the_o divine_a nature_n of_o christ_n be_v god_n the_o humane_a nature_n be_v finite_a and_o yet_o have_v the_o spirit_n above_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o this_o same_o spirit_n do_v act_n and_o guide_v and_o move_v all_o our_o affair_n in_o he_o and_o which_o be_v wonderful_a it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o same_o spirit_n breathe_v in_o christ_n and_o in_o we_o we_o have_v not_o only_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o do_v one_o duty_n but_o he_o do_v concur_v with_o we_o in_o all_o spiritual_a duty_n which_o we_o undertake_v according_a to_o he_o for_o without_o he_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o joh._n 15.5_o this_o be_v the_o first_o reason_n of_o the_o inhabitation_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o keep_v alive_a spiritual_a union_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o therefore_o be_v there_o one_o spirit_n in_o we_o all_o second_o reas_n 2_o another_o end_n of_o this_o inhabitation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v to_o keep_v possession_n for_o the_o lord_n in_o our_o heart_n against_o all_o adversary_n power_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n shall_v leave_v his_o gift_n only_o to_o keep_v possession_n there_o the_o devil_n will_v make_v very_o hard_a work_n with_o the_o best_a gift_n that_o we_o have_v receive_v he_o blast_v all_o the_o precious_a gift_n that_o adam_n have_v receive_v which_o be_v more_o perfect_a in_o degree_n than_o any_o we_o receive_v and_o yet_o when_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n and_o gate_n of_o hell_n be_v band_v together_o against_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o servant_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o fall_v away_o final_o and_o the_o apostle_n john_n give_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o 1_o joh._n 4.4_o you_o be_v of_o god_n little_a child_n and_o have_v overcome_v they_o because_o great_a be_v he_o that_o be_v in_o you_o than_o he_o that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n neither_o be_v we_o preserve_v by_o faith_n only_o but_o by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n 1_o pet._n 1.5_o the_o spirit_n it_o in_o such_o a_o point_n as_o this_o there_o be_v that_o think_v there_o be_v no_o reality_n in_o hypocritical_a sanctification_n but_o certain_o it_o be_v a_o real_a work_n the_o gift_n be_v real_a though_o common_a grace_n and_o not_o mere_a counterfeit_n pretence_n there_o be_v indeed_o some_o that_o do_v mere_o pretend_v and_o do_v but_o outward_o make_v fair_a weather_n in_o their_o profession_n but_o believe_v it_o it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o all_o hypocrite_n there_o be_v a_o real_a work_n in_o some_o heb._n 6.4_o 5._o they_o be_v enlighten_v and_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n be_v real_a and_o not_o imaginary_a god_n cast_v in_o their_o own_o end_n and_o their_o own_o glory_n in_o their_o way_n the_o servant_n of_o god_n have_v give_v they_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o fellowship_n and_o so_o long_o they_o have_v hold_v out_o that_o it_o be_v never_o know_v when_o man_n receive_v christ_n by_o their_o own_o freewill_n they_o be_v able_a to_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o pretence_n in_o hypocrite_n but_o a_o real_a work_n and_o so_o indeed_o in_o their_o lust_n and_o in_o their_o passion_n as_o will_v put_v their_o best_a friend_n to_o a_o stand_n what_o to_o think_v of_o they_o and_o much_o more_o themselves_o when_o as_o they_o come_v to_o be_v press_v with_o the_o power_n of_o their_o corruption_n special_o when_o they_o compare_v with_o such_o hypocrite_n as_o run_v along_o with_o more_o freedom_n of_o spirit_n then_o themselves_o for_o sometime_o their_o corruption_n do_v less_o appear_v and_o they_o be_v more_o free_a from_o temptation_n and_o not_o expose_v to_o such_o sinful_a course_n as_o sometime_o true-hearted_a christian_n be_v subject_a unto_o so_o a_o poor_a christian_a be_v discourage_v and_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v embolden_v see_v himself_o more_o sanctify_v in_o the_o outward_a view_n then_o the_o other_o that_o the_o true_a sanctification_n of_o a_o sincere_a christian_a be_v not_o discern_v by_o he_o propos_fw-fr 3_o nor_o be_v indeed_o discernible_a until_o he_o first_o discern_v his_o justify_n faith_n a_o double_a ground_n of_o it_o and_o so_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o christian_a disquisition_n and_o search_v they_o be_v both_o take_v from_o the_o necessity_n of_o faith_n both_o to_o the_o acceptance_n of_o a_o man_n person_n and_o of_o his_o work_n there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o the_o activeness_n of_o faith_n in_o a_o man_n sanctification_n the_o lord_n have_v respect_n to_o abel_n and_o to_o his_o offering_n gen._n 4.4_o a_o man_n person_n must_v be_v first_o accept_v otherwise_o all_o his_o work_n will_v not_o go_v beyond_o the_o work_n of_o a_o legal_a christian_a and_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n no_o acceptance_n therefore_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v also_o necessary_a to_o the_o performance_n of_o all_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a duty_n for_o all_o sanctification_n be_v from_o that_o faith_n which_o christ_n do_v convey_v into_o the_o soul_n now_o if_o the_o just_a man_n live_v by_o his_o faith_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n or_o consolation_n then_o no_o christian_a can_v discern_v his_o sanctification_n to_o be_v lively_a but_o he_o must_v discern_v his_o faith_n live_v in_o it_o he_o must_v see_v his_o faith_n derive_v strength_n and_o grace_n and_o life_n from_o christ_n or_o else_o he_o can_v approve_v his_o sanctification_n to_o be_v the_o sanctification_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o as_o there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a sanctification_n unless_o there_o be_v faith_n whereby_o the_o person_n be_v accept_v and_o whereby_o life_n be_v receive_v to_o act_v in_o all_o sanctification_n so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o knowledge_n of_o sanctification_n but_o there_o must_v be_v knowledge_n of_o faith_n whereby_o a_o man_n person_n be_v accept_v and_o whereby_o strength_n be_v convey_v to_o sanctification_n for_o if_o a_o poor_a soul_n be_v doubtful_a of_o his_o acceptance_n with_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v where_o he_o be_v notwithstanding_o his_o sanctification_n and_o want_v comfort_n for_o this_o doubt_n remain_v whether_o he_o be_v accept_v or_o no_o which_o until_o the_o lord_n do_v manifest_v a_o man_n faith_n unto_o he_o by_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v still_o at_o a_o loss_n in_o for_o though_o true_a sanctification_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o justification_n yet_o itself_o must_v be_v first_o evident_a thus_o we_o see_v by_o this_o three_o proposition_n that_o a_o further_a light_n be_v require_v to_o the_o sight_n of_o sanctification_n notwithstanding_o this_o near_a resemblance_n between_o legal_a and_o evangelical_n holiness_n propos_fw-fr 4_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o real_a difference_n between_o they_o and_o such_o a_o difference_n as_o be_v discernible_a to_o christian_n who_o wit_n be_v exercise_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o word_n of_o god_n and_o be_v discern_v by_o the_o revelation_n or_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n both_o of_o the_o state_n and_o work_n of_o good_a christian_n and_o that_o ordinary_o also_o for_o i_o will_v not_o count_v it_o extraordinary_a be_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o spirit_n do_v reveal_v unto_o his_o people_n a_o real_a difference_n there_o be_v both_o in_o the_o root_n and_o in_o the_o rule_n and_o in_o the_o scope_n which_o they_o aim_v at_o and_o so_o it_o will_v appear_v to_o be_v at_o the_o last_o day_n mat._n 2.23_o depart_v from_o i_o say_v christ_n you_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n i_o never_o know_v you_o though_o they_o come_v and_o tell_v he_o that_o they_o wrought_v by_o faith_n in_o he_o indeed_o they_o stand_v in_o some_o relation_n to_o he_o but_o not_o as_o member_n to_o the_o head_n only_o as_o branch_n to_o the_o vine_n which_o may_v be_v cut_v off_o and_o yet_o fellowship_n between_o christ_n and_o a_o christian_a then_o between_o the_o branch_n and_o the_o vine_n you_o may_v take_v they_o away_o and_o yet_o not_o hurt_v the_o vine_n but_o wherein_o shall_v this_o relation_n stand_v it_o be_v very_o hard_a to_o conceive_v in_o so_o much_o that_o those_o who_o have_v be_v most_o exact_a and_o diligent_a to_o inquire_v into_o it_o

accompany_v salvation_n for_o that_o holiness_n be_v not_o easy_o attain_v unto_o but_o the_o other_o will_v easy_o cleave_v close_o unto_o a_o man_n now_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v i_o quest_n 1_o wherefore_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o pursue_v after_o holiness_n and_o what_o need_v it_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n dwell_v in_o i_o by_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n if_o it_o do_v withdraw_v from_o we_o as_o it_o do_v from_o adam_n it_o be_v another_o matter_n but_o though_o it_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o we_o yet_o abide_v it_o for_o ever_o what_o need_v then_o of_o gift_n of_o holiness_n that_o one_o word_n may_v be_v sufficient_a answ_n which_o we_o find_v in_o 2_o tim._n 2.21_o if_o any_o man_n purge_v himself_o from_o these_o evil_n he_o shall_v be_v a_o vessel_n unto_o honour_n sanctify_a and_o meet_v for_o the_o master_n use_n and_o prepare_v unto_o every_o good_a work_n this_o show_v we_o why_o gift_n of_o holiness_n be_v requisite_a to_o be_v in_o god_n people_n namely_o that_o they_o may_v become_v meet_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o fit_v unto_o every_o good_a word_n and_o work_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o righteousness_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o we_o may_v be_v more_o fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a reason_n of_o the_o point_n if_o then_o there_o be_v such_o gift_n of_o holiness_n quest_n 2_o what_o need_v the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o he_o shall_v shed_v abroad_o these_o thing_n into_o our_o heart_n can_v the_o lord_n carry_v a_o end_n the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o these_o gift_n there_o be_v need_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o answ_n notwithstanding_o 1._o to_o keep_v these_o gift_n in_o we_o 2._o to_o act_v they_o in_o we_o 3._o to_o witness_v these_o unto_o our_o soul_n for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o good_a one_o of_o another_o some_o scripture_n for_o all_o these_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v these_o thing_n in_o we_o 2_o tim._n 1.14_o that_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v commit_v unto_o thou_o keep_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o there_o be_v a_o very_a worthy_a thing_n commit_v to_o we_o how_o shall_v we_o keep_v it_o not_o by_o our_o own_o wit_n and_o wisdom_n careful_a watchfulness_n and_o faithfulness_n though_o such_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v want_v but_o the_o charge_n be_v keep_v those_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o gift_n to_o be_v fit_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o maintain_v that_o which_o god_n give_v we_o and_o though_o adam_n gift_n be_v in_o perfection_n yet_o not_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v they_o for_o he_o they_o all_o fly_v from_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o leave_v he_o naked_a and_o desperate_a therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v strong_a possession_n in_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v this_o be_v the_o first_o ground_n why_o the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o 2._o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o act_v the_o gift_n give_v to_o we_o and_o enable_v they_o in_o we_o for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o keep_v possession_n do_v derive_v continue_v strength_n into_o our_o faith_n which_o put_v life_n into_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v how_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_v the_o holy_a ghost_n stir_v up_o faith_n to_o look_v unto_o christ_n who_o return_v strength_n by_o his_o spirit_n unto_o faith_n and_o so_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o by_o meekness_n and_o by_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n thus_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n act_v according_a to_o what_o we_o read_v rom._n 8.14_o as_o many_o as_o be_v christians_o when_o the_o lord_n first_o work_v these_o gift_n in_o they_o not_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o but_o they_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o sad_a and_o fearful_a condition_n and_o so_o they_o be_v very_o uncomfortable_a but_o now_o leave_v that_o we_o shall_v always_o mistake_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 2.12_o he_o indeed_o take_v his_o own_o time_n to_o discover_v it_o to_o some_o soon_o to_o some_o late_a but_o this_o be_v his_o intendment_n that_o he_o may_v honour_v his_o grace_n unto_o we_o by_o all_o the_o rich_a and_o gracious_a gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o he_o do_v also_o reveal_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n which_o he_o help_v we_o to_o do_v rom._n 9.1_o i_o say_v the_o truth_n in_o christ_n i_o lie_v not_o my_o conscience_n also_o bear_v i_o witness_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o i_o have_v great_a heaviness_n and_o continual_a sorrow_n in_o my_o heart_n for_o i_o can_v wish_v that_o myself_o be_v accurse_v from_o christ_n for_o my_o brethren_n my_o kinsman_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o wrought_v in_o he_o this_o brotherly-love_n the_o same_o holy_a ghost_n bear_v he_o witness_v that_o he_o do_v not_o lie_v and_o that_o he_o have_v continual_a sorrow_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o that_o he_o can_v have_v wish_v to_o have_v be_v accurse_v from_o christ_n that_o they_o may_v be_v save_v it_o grieve_v he_o so_o much_o that_o the_o whole_a nation_n shall_v be_v destitute_a of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n thus_o we_o see_v how_o great_a need_n there_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o we_o to_o keep_v all_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o to_o act_v they_o according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o to_o discover_v to_o we_o what_o gracious_a gift_n the_o lord_n have_v wrought_v in_o we_o and_o what_o duty_n he_o have_v help_v we_o to_o do_v that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o give_v account_n of_o they_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o and_o bear_v witness_n with_o we_o so_o there_o be_v necessity_n both_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v be_v fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o fit_a instrument_n for_o he_o to_o work_v by_o there_o be_v need_v also_o the_o holy_a ghost_n
find_v that_o difference_n which_o tend_v unto_o the_o discern_a of_o grace_n will_v be_v of_o much_o less_o dangerous_a consequence_n than_o the_o other_o for_o thereupon_o lie_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o a_o christian_a man_n safe_a estate_n how_o far_o there_o be_v difference_n in_o the_o country_n i_o can_v give_v a_o account_n but_o i_o desire_v that_o you_o may_v all_o understand_v what_o i_o say_v if_o you_o demand_v quest_n 1_o upon_o what_o ground_n come_v the_o soul_n to_o close_v with_o christ_n aright_o whether_o upon_o a_o conditional_a or_o upon_o a_o absolute_a promise_n and_o be_v they_o not_o both_o free_a i_o answer_v answ_n it_o be_v true_a they_o be_v both_o free_a but_o when_o god_n be_v say_v to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o a_o work_n as_o to_o apply_v a_o promise_n to_o a_o work_n it_o be_v not_o so_o proper_o say_v to_o be_v a_o promise_n of_o grace_n but_o i_o will_v not_o enter_v into_o dispute_n this_o you_o will_v find_v to_o be_v true_a that_o take_v a_o soul_n that_o be_v in_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o apply_v all_o the_o promise_n to_o he_o he_o will_v make_v you_o this_o answer_n before_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n come_v into_o he_o he_o be_v clear_a in_o this_o that_o there_o be_v none_o of_o all_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o he_o till_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v break_v he_o do_v bind_v he_o up_o again_o for_o his_o heart_n will_v tell_v you_o that_o his_o duty_n and_o reformation_n have_v be_v such_o as_o have_v keep_v he_o from_o christ_n you_o will_v say_v i_o hope_v you_o trust_v upon_o christ_n ay_o will_v he_o say_v with_o that_o faith_n by_o which_o i_o trust_v upon_o work_n before_o if_o you_o tell_v he_o of_o promise_n make_v to_o faith_n he_o will_v say_v but_o not_o to_o i_o that_o have_v only_o spring_v from_o my_o own_o reformation_n consider_v all_o you_o that_o search_v the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o day_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o deny_v that_o it_o have_v true_a faith_n what_o promise_n can_v it_o apply_v unto_o that_o which_o it_o deni_v itself_o to_o have_v a_o soul_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o refuse_v promise_n even_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v take_v possession_n but_o than_o it_o be_v his_o sin_n yet_o all_o the_o time_n before_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n but_o that_o the_o soul_n shall_v refuse_v to_o apply_v promise_n when_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o reformation_n and_o till_o we_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o old_a adam_n we_o shall_v be_v ready_a to_o quarrel_v and_o snarl_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v deal_v thus_o with_o we_o and_o why_o do_v he_o suffer_v adam_n to_o fall_v and_o put_v upon_o we_o such_o a_o law_n to_o obey_v and_o then_o condemn_v we_o for_o that_o which_o we_o be_v never_o able_a to_o perform_v true_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o help_v in_o this_o case_n but_o the_o lord_n will_v take_v away_o thy_o crabbed_a spirit_n he_o will_v make_v thou_o to_o lie_v flat_a at_o his_o foot_n and_o to_o say_v if_o he_o will_v kill_v i_o here_o i_o be_o and_o if_o he_o will_v save_v thou_o he_o will_v make_v thou_o content_a to_o receive_v all_o from_o christ_n and_o to_o be_v willing_a that_o he_o shall_v do_v with_o thou_o that_o which_o be_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n and_o what_o can_v help_v a_o soul_n now_o but_o only_o a_o absolute_a promise_n whereby_o the_o soul_n be_v raise_v to_o look_v to_o the_o name_n of_o that_o christ_n who_o he_o have_v all_o this_o while_n blaspheme_v and_o persecute_v thus_o we_o see_v upon_o what_o term_n and_o ground_n any_o one_o be_v jealous_a of_o build_v his_o comfort_n upon_o conditional_a promise_n and_o why_o we_o be_v so_o loath_a to_o say_v that_o sanctification_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o a_o man_n justification_n it_o be_v because_o man_n may_v produce_v sanctification_n and_o promise_n unto_o it_o when_o it_o be_v but_o legal_a righteousness_n yet_o some_o man_n will_v say_v i_o have_v be_v drive_v out_o of_o my_o own_o legal_a righteousness_n and_o now_o i_o rest_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o may_v i_o not_o take_v comfort_n in_o such_o faith_n and_o sanctification_n flow_v therefrom_o i_o confess_v faith_n in_o christ_n and_o sanctification_n flow_v from_o it_o be_v precious_a treasure_n but_o how_o come_v thou_o by_o they_o if_o thou_o know_v not_o how_o i_o can_v but_o think_v that_o thou_o stoale_v they_o and_o come_v not_o by_o they_o in_o the_o right_a way_n you_o will_v say_v well_o though_o i_o have_v no_o righteousness_n nor_o faith_n of_o my_o own_o yet_o i_o can_v wait_v upon_o christ_n how_o come_v thou_o by_o power_n to_o wait_v upon_o christ_n here_o be_v a_o branch_n of_o the_o old_a adam_n still_o spring_v forth_o afresh_o thou_o be_v confident_a in_o thy_o own_o strength_n and_o worth_a and_o if_o god_n deal_v otherwise_o with_o thou_o than_o thou_o expect_v thou_o will_v be_v apt_a to_o wrangle_v with_o the_o lord_n so_o far_o will_v thou_o be_v from_o stoop_v to_o his_o will_n search_v the_o scripture_n and_o see_v if_o it_o be_v not_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n see_v whether_o it_o be_v thy_o qualification_n take_v up_o upon_o unjust_a ground_n that_o will_v save_v thy_o soul_n thou_o have_v not_o be_v draw_v far_o enough_o all_o this_o while_n if_o thou_o say_v thou_o have_v be_v draw_v to_o reformation_n and_o faith_n and_o wait_v if_o thou_o have_v be_v indeed_o draw_v it_o be_v a_o comfortable_a sign_n but_o true_o the_o promise_n do_v not_o belong_v unto_o thou_o until_o thou_o be_v bring_v unto_o a_o flat_a denial_n of_o thyself_o and_o thy_o will_n be_v make_v to_o lie_v prostrate_a before_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o be_v unable_a to_o satisfy_v itself_o in_o any_o thing_n beside_o jesus_n christ_n the_o want_n of_o either_o of_o which_o will_v leave_v a_o man_n still_o a_o member_n of_o old_a adam_n that_o either_o he_o will_v cavil_v with_o god_n or_o else_o will_v go_v away_o and_o be_v jolly_a and_o frolic_a and_o free_a of_o spirit_n though_o he_o know_v not_o what_o the_o lord_n will_v do_v for_o he_o which_o be_v a_o plain_a sign_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v not_o there_o &_o then_o there_o be_v no_o condition_n of_o which_o it_o can_v be_v say_v this_o be_v the_o spot_n of_o god_n child_n this_o be_v the_o seal_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o the_o live_n god_n if_o then_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v upon_o the_o wing_n of_o a_o promise_n it_o be_v a_o absolute_a promise_n and_o than_o you_o must_v not_o wonder_v if_o we_o be_v thus_o afraid_a that_o man_n shall_v build_v their_o faith_n upon_o conditional_a promise_n if_o man_n build_v their_o consolation_n upon_o condition_n of_o obedience_n hypocrite_n have_v go_v beyond_o it_o if_o you_o have_v trust_v in_o your_o own_o faith_n hypocrite_n will_v plead_v that_o they_o have_v go_v beyond_o that_o also_o for_o they_o have_v wait_v upon_o god_n that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o therefore_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o do_v so_o much_o mistrust_v the_o build_n of_o our_o faith_n upon_o promise_n make_v unto_o condition_n in_o we_o and_o i_o have_v give_v you_o the_o ground_n from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o i_o shall_v be_v a_o traitor_n to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n if_o i_o shall_v speak_v from_o any_o other_o ground_n and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a which_o i_o have_v former_o say_v that_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirir_fw-it of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a as_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o love_n can_v be_v deny_v to_o be_v evidence_n of_o a_o good_a estate_n yet_o let_v it_o first_o appear_v from_o whence_o they_o come_v first_o draw_v near_o unto_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o when_o any_o be_v bring_v on_o to_o christ_n by_o self-denial_n such_o man_n faith_n and_o love_n be_v indeed_o evident_a token_n of_o salvation_n and_o communion_n with_o christ_n but_o until_o man_n be_v thus_o bring_v on_o they_o can_v have_v no_o evidence_n from_o such_o grace_n therefore_o you_o see_v why_o we_o be_v so_o fearful_a to_o build_v our_o faith_n upon_o qualification_n for_o any_o self-denying_a soul_n will_v tell_v you_o that_o no_o promise_n will_v serve_v his_o turn_n to_o build_v his_o faith_n upon_o but_o some_o such_o as_o speak_v of_o god_n wonderful_a and_o free_a grace_n if_o there_o be_v any_o promise_n make_v unto_o faith_n he_o will_v find_v himself_o very_o unable_a to_o apply_v it_o until_o the_o lord_n by_o some_o word_n of_o his_o free_a grace_n have_v wrought_v faith_n in_o he_o you_o may_v see_v here_o the_o unsafeness_n of_o any_o such_o building_n use_v 3_o as_o when_o we_o be_v convince_v of_o our_o sin_n than_o we_o
seek_v for_o some_o qualification_n in_o ourselves_o and_o think_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n appli_v some_o promise_n make_v to_o such_o a_o qualification_n and_o so_o we_o lay_v hold_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n a_o most_o unsafe_a building_n in_o my_o understanding_n for_o we_o can_v reach_v any_o gracious_a qualification_n until_o we_o have_v first_o receive_v christ_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o then_o we_o must_v look_v up_o unto_o he_o to_o bring_v we_o unto_o the_o promise_n and_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o we_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o a_o corrupt_a tree_n shall_v bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n but_o first_o make_v the_o tree_n good_a and_o good_a tree_n we_o can_v be_v till_o we_o be_v ingraft_v into_o christ_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o ground_n of_o my_o great_a fear_n and_o solicitude_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o i_o dare_v not_o be_v so_o unfaithful_a as_o to_o set_v man_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n or_o any_o other_o qualification_n thereby_o to_o conclude_v their_o safe_a estate_n before_o they_o have_v receive_v christ_n in_o a_o promise_n indeed_o when_o a_o man_n soul_n be_v wound_v and_o convince_v of_o some_o heinous_a sin_n the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o such_o a_o case_n may_v support_v his_o soul_n but_o do_v not_o lead_v a_o man_n in_o such_o a_o case_n to_o see_v his_o faith_n or_o any_o other_o qualification_n therein_o to_o satisfy_v himself_o but_o if_o i_o will_v help_v and_o comfort_v such_o a_o soul_n i_o will_v declare_v to_o he_o what_o the_o lord_n have_v do_v for_o we_o in_o christ_n i_o will_v show_v he_o all_o the_o treasure_n of_o the_o rich_a grace_n of_o christ_n i_o will_v set_v in_o order_n before_o he_o how_o he_o love_v free_o without_o any_o desert_n in_o we_o i_o will_v tell_v he_o how_o free_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n do_v invite_v man_n to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o have_v neither_o money_n nor_o money_n worth_a and_o if_o the_o lord_n take_v delight_n to_o do_v he_o good_a despise_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o when_o once_o a_o man_n be_v take_v up_o with_o the_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n he_o than_o care_v not_o a_o rush_n for_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n mount_v zion_n be_v not_o now_o commodious_a for_o he_o so_o profane_o do_v they_o undervalue_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o comparison_n of_o sensual_a lust_n and_o do_v man_n thus_o fall_v from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n because_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n above_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n no_o no_o the_o very_a common_a gift_n they_o have_v may_v have_v restrain_v be_v a_o self-confident_a cleave_v unto_o those_o gift_n of_o grace_n which_o by_o the_o covenant_n they_o have_v receive_v beside_o these_o cause_n of_o their_o fall_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n i_o have_v observe_v no_o more_o in_o scripture_n nor_o have_v i_o find_v any_o more_o in_o my_o own_o experience_n when_o man_n be_v invest_v with_o many_o spiritual_a blessing_n sweet_o endow_v with_o many_o sprinkling_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n whereby_o they_o come_v to_o be_v great_a in_o knowledge_n and_o sometime_o excel_v in_o a_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n and_o some_o be_v good_a at_o one_o thing_n and_o some_o at_o another_o and_o be_v full_a of_o such_o gift_n it_o may_v easy_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o may_v grow_v so_o confident_a of_o these_o that_o they_o will_v not_o subject_v themselves_o unto_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o this_o be_v the_o rejection_n of_o the_o whole_a house_n of_o israel_n rom._n 10.3_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n have_v not_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o hence_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v unto_o they_o turn_v into_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n they_o be_v now_o become_v the_o child_n of_o the_o bondwoman_n and_o not_o the_o child_n of_o the_o freewoman_n for_o they_o that_o have_v their_o faith_n in_o themselves_o and_o not_o in_o christ_n they_o fall_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n so_o that_o mind_n you_o the_o lord_n be_v just_a and_o righteous_a in_o all_o these_o his_o dispensation_n i_o say_v before_o god_n do_v receive_v abraham_n and_o his_o seed_n into_o this_o covenant_n i_o mean_v the_o faithful_a seed_n and_o they_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o second_o sort_n of_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n which_o be_v true_o save_v for_o the_o lord_n receive_v they_o into_o inward_a fellowship_n with_o his_o son_n than_o seven_o man_n that_o can_v render_v a_o reason_n or_o if_o you_o break_v not_o out_o upon_o these_o term_n than_o you_o will_v begin_v to_o see_v that_o god_n have_v enlighten_v your_o mind_n
