and_o the_o part_n regenerate_v the_o spirit_n with_o all_o the_o holy_a quality_n grace_n and_o motion_n thereof_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o contrariety_n in_o nature_n and_o conjunction_n in_o place_n whereby_o they_o mutual_o lust_n and_o strive_v one_o against_o the_o other_o the_o flesh_n willing_a and_o in_o brace_v that_o evil_n which_o the_o spirit_n nill_v and_o hate_v and_o always_o join_v with_o the_o go_v down_o of_o the_o other_o or_o like_o the_o spleen_n in_o the_o body_n the_o swell_a whereof_o be_v join_v with_o the_o other_o consumption_n yea_o alike_o nay_o much_o more_o contrary_a than_o light_n and_o darkness_n heat_n and_o cold_a the_o one_o whereof_o increase_v as_o the_o other_o decrease_v glory_n §_o sect_n 2._o of_o the_o first_o and_o chief_a cause_n of_o the_o conflict_n which_o be_v god_n will_v for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o his_o own_o glory_n the_o cause_n of_o this_o conflict_n be_v either_o efficient_a and_o more_o remote_a or_o formal_a and_o essential_a the_o late_a be_v plain_o express_v the_o former_a employ_v in_o the_o description_n of_o this_o conflict_n namely_o god_n will_v appoint_v this_o fight_n and_o to_o this_o purpose_n not_o perfect_v our_o sanctification_n in_o this_o life_n but_o in_o part_n regenerate_v and_o in_o part_n leave_v we_o unregenerate_a yea_o but_o why_o do_v not_o the_o lord_n who_o through_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n be_v as_o able_a to_o have_v recreated_a and_o renew_v we_o at_o once_o by_o his_o sole_a word_n as_o he_o do_v first_o create_v &_o make_v we_o perfect_v this_o work_n of_o regeneration_n replenish_v we_o with_o abundance_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o with_o sanctify_a grace_n thereof_o and_o quite_o abolish_v the_o flesh_n with_o the_o lust_n thereof_o i_o answer_v though_o there_o be_v no_o other_o reason_n but_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o his_o most_o wise_a will_n it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o satisfy_v we_o for_o he_o best_a know_v what_o to_o give_v and_o when_o to_o give_v it_o what_o measure_n of_o his_o grace_n be_v fit_a for_o he_o to_o bestow_v and_o the_o most_o seasonable_a time_n for_o we_o to_o receive_v it_o but_o yet_o diverse_a seasonable_a it_o be_v most_o profitable_a both_o for_o the_o set_n forth_o of_o god_n glory_n and_o the_o advance_v and_o further_a of_o our_o own_o good_a it_o do_v more_o manifest_a and_o magnify_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n for_o the_o weak_a we_o be_v in_o our_o regenerate_a part_n and_o the_o strong_a the_o flesh_n be_v with_o all_o other_o the_o enemy_n of_o our_o salvation_n the_o more_o clear_o his_o wisdom_n and_o power_n shine_v and_o appear_v which_o so_o strengthen_v this_o weak_a part_n that_o it_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o the_o day_n of_o battle_n yea_o that_o it_o obtain_v a_o full_a and_o final_a victory_n and_o put_v all_o it_o mighty_a enemy_n to_o flight_n whereas_o if_o we_o be_v perfect_o regenerate_v and_o the_o flesh_n utter_o vanquish_v and_o abolish_v it_o be_v no_o great_a wonder_n that_o we_o be_v not_o overcome_v if_o we_o have_v no_o enemy_n or_o but_o a_o weak_a one_o to_o set_v upon_o us._n and_o this_o move_v the_o lord_n to_o

spirit_n be_v fit_o compare_v to_o the_o residence_n of_o the_o light_n and_o darkness_n in_o the_o air_n in_o the_o twilight_n or_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n when_o as_o there_o be_v not_o one_o part_n of_o the_o air_n dark_a and_o another_o light_n but_o the_o whole_a air_n partly_o light_a and_o partly_o dark_a he_o darkness_n and_o light_n be_v mingle_v together_o or_o of_o heat_n and_o cold_a in_o the_o same_o lukewarm_a water_n where_o they_o be_v not_o divide_v in_o place_n but_o the_o whole_a water_n be_v partly_o cold_a and_o partly_o hot_a or_o of_o water_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o same_o vessel_n in_o which_o there_o be_v not_o one_o part_n wine_n and_o another_o water_n but_o the_o whole_a mixture_n be_v partly_o water_n and_o partly_o wine_n or_o of_o sickness_n and_o health_n in_o those_o which_o we_o call_v weak_a and_o sickly_a through_o some_o spice_n or_o relic_n of_o a_o ague_n or_o fever_n of_o who_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o he_o be_v sick_a in_o one_o part_n and_o sound_v in_o another_o but_o that_o he_o be_v partly_o healthy_a in_o his_o whole_a body_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o he_o be_v recour_v and_o partly_o sick_a so_o far_o forth_o as_o the_o relic_n of_o his_o sickness_n remain_v in_o he_o in_o all_o which_o these_o contrary_a quality_n do_v not_o friendly_o conjoin_v themselves_o nor_o agree_v one_o with_o another_o neither_o do_v they_o the_o law_n denounce_v punishment_n if_o he_o go_v not_o on_o this_o warfare_n only_o out_o of_o his_o love_n and_o obedience_n towards_o god_n and_o his_o own_v inclination_n carry_v he_o against_o it_o be_v not_o a_o through_o reformation_n or_o a_o purge_n of_o the_o heart_n from_o all_o the_o filth_n of_o sin_n such_o as_o follow_v the_o conflict_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o flesh_n but_o a_o reduce_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a man_n from_o extremity_n to_o some_o medioctitie_n from_o be_v a_o publican_n and_o notorious_a sinner_n to_o be_v a_o pharisee_fw-mi hypocrite_n or_o at_o the_o best_a a_o mere_a civil_a man_n conformable_a to_o the_o politic_a law_n in_o the_o state_n and_o no_o opposer_n to_o outward_a discipline_n and_o order_n in_o the_o church_n and_o this_o also_o be_v the_o work_n of_o natural_a reason_n which_o persuade_v they_o to_o this_o information_n for_o worldly_a respect_n whereas_o the_o other_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o in_o
