to_o keep_v the_o lord_n with_o or_o among_o such_o a_o people_n or_o army_n the_o truth_n of_o this_o lesson_n we_o may_v see_v confirm_v to_o we_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o israelite_n here_o in_o this_o chapter_n of_o our_o text._n for_o we_o read_v that_o they_o by_o their_o fear_n and_o faint-heartedness_n by_o their_o unbelief_n and_o cowardice_n when_o god_n have_v command_v they_o not_o to_o fear_v or_o to_o be_v afraid_a at_o the_o outward_a strength_n and_o power_n of_o their_o enemy_n the_o amorites_n and_o canaanites_n thereby_o tempt_v the_o lord_n and_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n because_o he_o be_v their_o strength_n and_o defence_n and_o fight_v all_o their_o battle_n insomuch_o that_o he_o forsake_v they_o and_o depart_v whereupon_o the_o prophet_n moses_n tell_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o prosper_v for_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o among_o you_o and_o therefore_o go_v not_o up_o against_o the_o enemy_n say_v he_o lest_o you_o be_v smite_v of_o stand_v in_o no_o awe_n of_o the_o mighty_a god_n and_o terrible_a the_o supreme_a governor_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n who_o be_v glorious_a in_o holiness_n fearful_a in_o praise_n do_v wonder_n alas_o alas_o this_o cowardice_n or_o timidity_n of_o spirit_n be_v a_o grand_a shame_n for_o any_o soldier_n of_o christ_n the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o and_o it_o common_o hinder_v those_o from_o the_o punctual_a performance_n of_o their_o duty_n who_o be_v such_o fearful_a heart_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o nicodemus_n a_o ruler_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o for_o fear_n dare_v not_o open_o confess_v christ_n or_o come_v by_o day_n lest_o he_o shall_v be_v see_v of_o the_o jew_n to_o be_v teach_v in_o that_o heavenly_a doctrine_n of_o regeneration_n or_o the_o new_a birth_n by_o he_o who_o have_v the_o word_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o speak_v as_o never_o man_n speak_v but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n and_o christian_a courage_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n make_v he_o in_o solomon_n phrase_n to_o be_v as_o bold_a as_o a_o lion_n and_o put_v he_o upon_o any_o thing_n even_o the_o most_o perilous_a attempt_n in_o obedience_n to_o god_n holy_a will_n and_o commandment_n and_o in_o duty_n and_o allegiance_n to_o his_o prince_n this_o be_v it_o which_o move_v little_a david_n to_o encounter_v
