cafe_z cry_v out_o they_o fear_v that_o all_o that_o work_n which_o be_v pass_v upon_o they_o be_v no_o more_o than_o in_o the_o bare_a letter_n as_o they_o call_v it_o i._n e._n they_o doubt_v whether_o it_o be_v of_o the_o spirit_n yea_o or_o no_o as_o be_v open_v in_o the_o former_a part_n etc._n etc._n now_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o this_o fear_n satisfaction_n satisfaction_n and_o to_o raise_v up_o a_o soul_n that_o be_v cast_v down_o and_o lie_v doubt_v whether_o its_o call_n conviction_n and_o comfort_n be_v from_o the_o spirit_n yea_o or_o no_o i_o shall_v speak_v to_o each_o of_o these_o by_o themselves_o first_o for_o thy_o call_n o_o soul_n thou_o say_v thou_o fear_v thou_o be_v only_o call_v by_o man_n i.e._n wrought_v upon_o to_o leave_v thy_o sin_n and_o former_a course_n by_o the_o mere_a wit_n and_o oratory_n of_o man_n in_o persuade_v etc._n etc._n there_o be_v three_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v offer_v to_o scatter_v thy_o fear_n in_o this_o particular_a 1_o consider_v that_o thy_o call_n may_v be_v by_o the_o spirit_n though_o thou_o do_v think_v it_o be_v by_o man_n only_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o spirit_n speak_v to_o our_o heart_n most_o by_o man_n immediate_n call_v be_v rare_a it_o may_v be_v you_o fear_v your_o call_n be_v not_o by_o the_o spirit_n because_o it_o be_v by_o man_n it_o may_v be_v man_n speech_n and_o the_o spirit_n call_v it_o be_v christ_n that_o preach_v to_o the_o ephesian_n though_o it_o be_v paul_n that_o speak_v paul_n tell_v they_o christ_n come_v and_o preach_v peace_n to_o they_o ephes_n 2.17_o and_o yet_o we_o know_v christ_n be_v never_o at_o ephesus_n and_o paul_n speak_v this_o of_o christ_n after_o the_o time_n of_o his_o suffering_n as_o be_v deducible_a from_o vers_n 16._o indeed_o it_o be_v christ_n that_o preach_v by_o paul_n and_o though_o man_n be_v the_o trumpet_n yet_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o breath_n that_o fill_v it_o when_o thou_o be_v call_v from_o thy_o sin_n look_v as_o in_o samuel_n case_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n call_v he_o and_o he_o think_v it_o be_v eli_n as_o it_o be_v 1_o sam._n 3._o so_o it_o may_v be_v with_o you_o and_o the_o reason_n may_v be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o samuel_n case_n he_o be_v a_o child_n and_o so_o do_v not_o know_v yet_o as_o the_o text_n say_v the_o lord_n it_o may_v be_v thou_o be_v a_o child_n as_o yet_o o_o soul_n and_o be_v not_o so_o well_o able_a to_o distinguish_v of_o the_o lord_n from_o man_n thou_o as_o yet_o may_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o thou_o may_v think_v it_o be_v only_a man_n when_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n which_o call_v thou_o hereafter_o when_o thou_o shall_v grow_v up_o to_o a_o full_a age_n in_o christ_n this_o childish_a thing_n and_o fear_n may_v be_v do_v away_o and_o thou_o shall_v no_o more_o speak_v as_o a_o child_n and_o say_v thou_o fear_v it_o be_v man_n only_o that_o call_v thou_o but_o thou_o shall_v be_v teach_v of_o god_n and_o know_v thou_o be_v call_v by_o the_o spirit_n 2_o call_v to_o mind_n in_o what_o frame_n of_o soul_n thou_o be_v if_o thou_o can_v call_v it_o to_o mind_n when_o thy_o first_o call_n be_v and_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v and_o be_v which_o do_v prevail_v with_o you_o happy_o thy_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o direct_a way_n of_o oppose_a god_n and_o thou_o do_v little_o think_v of_o he_o when_o he_o call_v thou_o the_o more_o unexpected_a it_o be_v the_o more_o of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o the_o call_n beside_o say_v o_o soul_n be_v it_o not_o naked_a truth_n plain_a simple_a truth_n that_o do_v and_o do_v most_o take_v with_o thy_o heart_n sure_o the_o more_o plain_a truth_n be_v which_o do_v work_v upon_o you_o the_o more_o of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o that_o work_n it_o be_v a_o rule_n case_n the_o less_o of_o man_n the_o more_o of_o god_n be_v not_o able_a to_o say_v o_o soul_n that_o thou_o be_v go_v on_o in_o a_o vain_a vile_a way_n of_o live_v without_o god_n and_o that_o thou_o be_v so_o take_v up_o with_o the_o world_n and_o vanity_n etc._n etc._n that_o god_n be_v not_o in_o all_o thy_o thought_n and_o that_o at_o a_o time_n thou_o do_v either_o read_v or_o hear_v such_o or_o such_o a_o naked_a truth_n as_o to_o instance_n that_o thou_o be_v a_o child_n of_o wrath_n by_o nature_n that_o out_o of_o christ_n there_o be_v no_o hope_n of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o hereupon_o unexpected_o thou_o do_v find_v thy_o heart_n move_v to_o take_v another_o course_n peradventure_o thou_o have_v read_v or_o hear_v and_o do_v know_v the_o same_o truth_n before_o o_o but_o at_o such_o or_o such_o a_o time_n thou_o do_v find_v thy_o heart_n more_o wrought_v upon_o by_o it_o than_o ever_o i_o beseech_v you_o serious_o say_v have_v it_o not_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o if_o it_o have_v why_o doubt_v you_o that_o your_o call_n be_v not_o by_o the_o spirit_n but_o 3_o call_v to_o mind_n and_o in_o sincerity_n tell_v and_o confess_v what_o it_o be_v that_o thou_o be_v iall_v from_o and_o what_o it_o be_v that_o thou_o be_v call_v to_o can_v not_o thou_o say_v thy_o call_n be_v not_o so_o much_o at_o least_o not_o only_o from_o misery_n but_o it_o be_v from_o sin_n it_o be_v true_a many_o a_o man_n by_o natural_a conscience_n and_o fleshly_a principle_n be_v thus_o far_o wrought_v upon_o in_o a_o call_n that_o it_o be_v willing_a to_o come_v out_o of_o misery_n i_o but_o thy_o soul_n can_v say_v it_o be_v willing_a to_o come_v from_o sin_n and_o it_o be_v from_o that_o which_o in_o thy_o call_n thy_o heart_n be_v take_v off_o yea_o and_o be_v not_o thou_o able_a to_o say_v thou_o do_v find_v thy_o heart_n in_o thy_o call_n real_o go_v out_o after_o as_o conceive_v thou_o be_v call_v unto_o holiness_n as_o it_o be_v 1_v thes_n 4.7_o can_v you_o appeal_v to_o god_n that_o in_o your_o call_n you_o do_v at_o lest_o that_o now_o you_o do_v find_v your_o heart_n not_o only_o call_v and_o make_v willing_a to_o leave_v a_o sorrowful_a estate_n and_o come_v into_o a_o happy_a one_o but_o also_o to_o leave_v a_o sinful_a estate_n and_o come_v into_o a_o holy_a estate_n certain_o if_o your_o call_n be_v not_o only_o from_o misery_n but_o from_o sin_n and_o if_o it_o be_v to_o be_v as_o well_o and_o as_o much_o nay_o more_o unto_o holiness_n then_o unto_o freedom_n from_o misery_n i_o say_v if_o you_o can_v clear_v this_o and_o do_v not_o your_o conscience_n oh_o you_o deject_a soul_n witness_v to_o this_o then_o why_o do_v you_o doubt_v what_o reason_n have_v you_o to_o fear_v that_o your_o call_n be_v not_o of_o the_o spirit_n to_o come_v therefore_o to_o the_o other_o thing_n viz._n second_o to_o your_o conviction_n you_o say_v you_o doubt_v whether_o that_o be_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o evangelical_a or_o only_o by_o the_o letter_n and_o legal_a now_o to_o satisfy_v you_o in_o this_o there_o be_v 3_o question_n which_o i_o will_v put_v unto_o you_o and_o in_o the_o sincerity_n of_o your_o heart_n resolve_v they_o 1_o what_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n of_o which_o you_o be_v and_o be_v convict_v when_o thy_o heart_n be_v convince_v of_o sin_n what_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n which_o then_o thou_o be_v convince_v of_o search_v your_o heart_n and_o consider_v what_o answer_n to_o give_v can_v you_o say_v it_o be_v unbelief_n certain_o if_o you_o be_v convince_v of_o that_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n which_o wrought_v that_o conviction_n i_o desire_v not_o to_o be_v mistake_v i_o do_v not_o urge_v this_o as_o if_o i_o think_v there_o either_o be_v not_o or_o need_v not_o any_o more_o conviction_n than_o this_o for_o certain_o save_v conviction_n extend_v itself_o to_o all_o sin_n and_o in_o particular_a to_o our_o particular_a special_a sin_n but_o my_o aim_n be_v to_o hint_n something_o as_o a_o signal_n discovery_n of_o conviction_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o order_n to_o this_o it_o be_v which_o i_o be_o now_o speak_v now_o then_o be_v thou_o ever_o convince_v of_o unbelief_n have_v thou_o see_v this_o to_o be_v a_o sin_n yea_o and_o to_o be_v a_o great_a sin_n certain_o if_o thou_o have_v thy_o conviction_n have_v be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v the_o peculiar_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v of_o unbelief_n as_o it_o be_v john_n 16.9.11_o many_o a_o soul_n be_v convince_v of_o these_o or_o these_o sin_n
but_o the_o soul_n convince_v by_o the_o spirit_n be_v convince_v of_o this_o sin_n as_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o sin_n viz._n unbelief_n oh_o say_v a_o soul_n which_o be_v convince_v by_o the_o spirit_n i_o know_v drunkenness_n be_v a_o sin_n uncleanness_n be_v a_o sin_n pride_n a_o sin_n etc._n etc._n but_o i_o know_v unbeleef_n be_v a_o sin_n as_o great_a ray_n great_a than_o they_o all_o this_o be_v lay_v upon_o my_o spirit_n that_o christ_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n sweet_o discover_v the_o love_n of_o god_n free_o tender_v reconcilement_n in_o his_o blood_n but_o i_o oh_o ay_o do_v little_o see_v and_o much_o slight_v he_o i_o do_v not_o make_v it_o my_o work_n to_o go_v after_o he_o nor_o have_v i_o be_v willing_a when_o he_o have_v come_v after_o i_o to_o accept_v he_o and_o this_o oh_o this_o have_v be_v nay_o i_o fear_v it_o be_v still_o my_o sin_n oh_o this_o base_a vile_a damnable_a unbelief_n be_v that_o which_o have_v and_o do_v lie_v upon_o my_o spirit_n other_o sin_n put_v i_o in_o a_o dissolute_a necessity_n of_o salvation_n and_o this_o seal_v i_o under_o damnation_n he_o that_o believe_v not_o he_o be_v condemn_v already_o oh_o that_o scripture_n take_v hold_v on_o i_o christ_n come_v and_o be_v willing_a to_o embrace_v but_o i_o will_v not_o believe_v he_o come_v sweet_o wee_v and_o i_o stand_v out_o sinful_o reject_v he_o tender_v grace_v free_o and_o i_o do_v put_v off_o that_o tender_a wretched_o he_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o and_o i_o will_v ease_v you_o and_o i_o do_v not_o can_v not_o will_v not_o believe_v and_o therefore_o come_v not_o to_o he_o this_o o_o this_o i_o be_o convince_v of_o as_o my_o sin_n and_o this_o i_o doubt_n be_v my_o sin_n to_o this_o day_n the_o truth_n be_v i_o can_v hardly_o believe_v yet_o that_o christ_n come_v to_o save_v sinner_n why_o say_v oh_o soul_n do_v not_o thy_o heart_n answer_v to_o these_o thing_n as_o face_n to_o face_n be_v there_o not_o a_o copy_n of_o this_o complaint_n in_o the_o secret_a table_n of_o thy_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v pray_v who_o shall_v nay_o who_o can_v write_v it_o but_o the_o spirit_n who_o can_v take_v these_o thing_n of_o christ_n and_o reveal_v they_o unto_o thou_o but_o the_o spirit_n sure_o if_o none_o can_v call_v jesus_n lord_n but_o by_o the_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v 1_o cor._n 12.3_o then_o none_o can_v be_v convince_v so_o far_o of_o sin_n for_o not_o receive_v of_o or_o believe_v in_o which_o be_v all_o one_o this_o lord_n christ_n but_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o second_o what_o be_v the_o great_a principle_n upon_o which_o you_o be_v most_o convict_v be_v it_o sense_n or_o hope_v of_o divine_a love_n it_o may_v be_v thou_o have_v sometime_o taste_v how_o good_a the_o lord_n be_v peradventure_o you_o have_v have_v some_o sense_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o it_o may_v be_v you_o have_v only_o sometime_o attain_v some_o hope_n of_o divine_a love_n now_o be_v it_o this_o that_o do_v most_o affect_v thy_o heart_n in_o thy_o conviction_n do_v not_o thy_o soul_n say_v oh_o what_o a_o vile_a wretch_n have_v i_o be_v who_o have_v despise_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o who_o have_v not_o be_v lead_v thereby_o unto_o repentance_n stand_v thou_o convince_v of_o the_o greatness_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o love_n because_o god_n have_v be_v be_v and_o thou_o hope_v will_v be_v exceed_o good_a be_v not_o upon_o this_o convince_v that_o thou_o be_v and_o have_v be_v exceed_v bad_a sure_o so_o much_o as_o love_v and_o sweetness_n have_v have_v a_o influence_n upon_o thy_o conviction_n so_o much_o the_o spirit_n have_v be_v in_o it_o the_o hand_n of_o wrath_n may_v convince_v a_o pharaoh_n that_o he_o have_v sin_v but_o a_o eye_n of_o love_n will_v make_v a_o peter_n weep_v bitter_o therefore_o three_o in_o thy_o conviction_n for_o sin_n what_o sight_n have_v thou_o have_v of_o christ_n the_o spirit_n where_o he_o convince_v of_o sin_n he_o also_o convince_v of_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v john_n 16.10_o i.e._n the_o spirit_n convince_v the_o soul_n that_o albeit_o it_o be_v unrighteous_a yet_o there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n in_o christ_n which_o it_o may_v have_v the_o spirit_n where_o he_o be_v a_o messenger_n of_o sin_n come_v in_o and_o convince_a the_o soul_n thereof_o he_o be_v also_o a_o interpreter_n take_v the_o thing_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o show_v thereof_o unto_o the_o soul_n the_o spirit_n be_v that_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o to_o show_v unto_o man_n his_o uprightness_n as_o it_o be_v job_n 33.23_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v be_v convince_v by_o the_o law_n but_o alas_o in_o that_o conviction_n he_o see_v only_o a_o moses_n but_o a_o saint_n be_v convince_v not_o only_o by_o the_o law_n but_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o in_o his_o conviction_n he_o see_v a_o messiah_n can_v not_o thou_o say_v o_o soul_n when_o thou_o be_v convince_v that_o thou_o be_v a_o sinner_n thou_o be_v also_o convince_v that_o there_o be_v a_o saviour_n do_v not_o thou_o see_v a_o remedy_n as_o well_o as_o a_o disease_n a_o heal_a plaster_n as_o well_o as_o a_o kill_a wound_n a_o saviour_n as_o well_o beseech_v sinner_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o that_o they_o may_v have_v life_n as_o blame_v of_o they_o for_o not_o believe_v in_o he_o that_o they_o may_v be_v free_a from_o death_n sure_o soul_n its_o the_o spirit_n who_o give_v life_n the_o letter_n kill_v where_o the_o letter_n convince_v only_o it_o do_v leave_v a_o soul_n under_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n but_o if_o together_o with_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n for_o sin_n thou_o do_v also_o see_v the_o hope_n of_o life_n in_o a_o righteousness_n then_o there_o be_v something_o more_o and_o high_a than_o the_o letter_n in_o thy_o conviction_n even_o the_o holy_a ghost_n if_o then_o when_o thou_o be_v convince_v thou_o do_v see_v unbelief_n as_o the_o great_a sin_n and_o divine_a love_n as_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o that_o unbelief_n and_o yet_o withal_o a_o sight_n of_o free_a and_o full_a righteousness_n tender_v as_o a_o cure_n of_o both_o if_o i_o say_v thou_o do_v see_v these_o thing_n in_o thy_o conviction_n why_o be_v thou_o cast_v down_o o_o soul_n and_o why_o do_v thou_o fear_v the_o spirit_n be_v not_o in_o thy_o conviction_n to_o go_v on_o then_o to_o the_o last_o branch_n of_o this_o fear_n and_o doubt_n thou_o say_v o_o soul_n that_o do_v fear_v thy_o comfort_n be_v not_o from_o the_o spirit_n at_o least_o thou_o say_v thou_o do_v doubt_v it_o it_o be_v true_a after_o thy_o storm_n thou_o do_v hear_v a_o still_a voice_n but_o say_v thou_o be_v the_o spirit_n in_o that_o voice_n sometime_o even_o after_o conviction_n thou_o do_v say_v thou_o do_v feel_v comfort_n but_o thou_o fear_v whether_o it_o be_v from_o the_o spirit_n or_o from_o the_o letter_n and_o fancy_n etc._n etc._n why_o now_o in_o order_n to_o the_o scatter_n of_o this_o fear_n let_v i_o entreat_v you_o to_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o whence_o it_o be_v that_o thy_o comfort_n be_v fetch_v which_o be_v bring_v to_o thou_o be_v it_o not_o such_o as_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o can_v not_o bring_v come_v it_o not_o from_o jesus_n christ_n who_o can_v only_o give_v man_n his_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v job_n 33_o 23._o he_o shall_v take_v of_o i_o and_o shall_v show_v it_o unto_o you_o say_v christ_n of_o the_o spirit_n job_n 16.15_o where_o the_o spirit_n bring_v in_o comfort_n it_o be_v still_o show_v to_o be_v fetch_v from_o christ_n alas_o can_v not_o thou_o say_v it_o be_v not_o from_o any_o creature_n man_n or_o angel_n that_o the_o hope_n of_o your_o comfort_n come_v alas_o miserable_a comforter_n be_v they_o all_o but_o it_o be_v only_o from_o christ_n where_o the_o spirit_n comfort_n he_o do_v it_o still_o in_o a_o discovery_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o show_v christ_n pierce_v by_o the_o soul_n and_o use_v that_o sight_n unto_o conviction_n so_o he_o discover_v christ_n willing_a to_o embrace_v the_o soul_n and_o use_v this_o sight_n unto_o consolation_n the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o some_o be_v rather_o from_o a_o cessation_n of_o the_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n then_o from_o a_o sight_n and_o discovery_n of_o christ_n now_o if_o thy_o comfort_n come_v only_o from_o a_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n and_o from_o a_o sight_n of_o the_o thing_n in_o he_o why_o be_v thou_o disquiet_v as_o if_o thy_o comfort_n be_v not_o from_o the_o spirit_n since_o as_o no_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n save_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n which_o be_v in_o he_o 2.11_o 1_o cor._n 2.11_o even_o so_o the_o
a_o time_n thou_o shall_v deny_v he_o chap._n 9_o satisfaction_n for_o soul_n cast_v down_o about_o prayer_n beside_o those_o eight_o particular_a fear_n which_o i_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o six_o chapter_n of_o the_o forego_n section_n i_o add_v six_o other_o fear_n which_o do_v appear_v in_o some_o deject_a soul_n now_o it_o be_v my_o desire_n to_o speak_v something_o to_o they_o in_o order_n to_o satisfy_v some_o soul_n that_o lie_v and_o labour_n under_o they_o some_o there_o be_v that_o when_o they_o be_v cast_v down_o do_v much_o disquiet_v themselves_o about_o their_o prayer_n case_n case_n oh_o say_v some_o we_o fear_v we_o never_o pray_v in_o all_o our_o life_n or_o if_o we_o do_v we_o question_v whether_o god_n ever_o hear_v we_o etc._n etc._n now_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o soul_n in_o this_o case_n i_o shall_v speak_v unto_o it_o in_o both_o its_o branch_n and_o satisfaction_n satisfaction_n first_o for_o such_o soul_n as_o be_v cast_v down_o and_o disquiet_v and_o cry_v out_o oh_o they_o never_o pray_v in_o all_o their_o life_n it_o be_v true_a they_o say_v they_o have_v sometime_o speak_v in_o prayer_n but_o they_o doubt_v whether_o ever_o they_o pray_v in_o prayer_n they_o fear_v they_o rather_o move_v their_o lip_n than_o breathe_v their_o spirit_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v these_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v say_v unto_o such_o soul_n first_o this_o very_a fear_n argue_v a_o choice_n frame_v it_o proceed_v from_o a_o very_a choice_n spirit_n thus_o to_o fear_v indeed_o a_o slight_a and_o common_a spirit_n do_v pray_v it_o care_v not_o how_o so_o the_o work_n be_v do_v it_o be_v all_o they_o mind_n and_o it_o be_v well_o some_o mind_v so_o much_o but_o with_o what_o frame_n of_o spirit_n they_o pray_v alas_o that_o they_o look_v not_o after_o some_o there_o be_v that_o we_o call_v protestant_n which_o in_o this_o be_v as_o bad_a as_o papist_n that_o they_o rather_o give_v god_n a_o number_n of_o prayer_n than_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o now_o it_o argue_v a_o spirit_n something_o heighten_v to_o mind_v the_o manner_n of_o prayer_n to_o eye_n the_o spirit_n and_o the_o soul_n how_o that_o be_v in_o prayer_n look_v as_o it_o argue_v in_o thing_n human_a a_o ordinary_a mind_n that_o can_v content_v itself_o with_o the_o bare_a do_v of_o thing_n how_o bungling_o so_o ever_o whereas_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o raisednesse_n of_o mind_n to_o see_v that_o every_o thing_n be_v well_o do_v as_o well_o as_o do_v to_o see_v it_o be_v do_v neat_o etc._n etc._n so_o it_o argue_v in_o thing_n divine_a a_o common_a spirit_n such_o a_o one_o as_o cain_n have_v to_o be_v content_v with_o a_o bare_a sacrifice_n a_o bare_a empty_a prayer_n but_o it_o discover_v a_o spirit_n heighten_v such_o a_o one_o as_o paul_n have_v to_o eye_n the_o spirit_n how_o it_o be_v in_o prayer_n paul_n profess_v he_o will_v pray_v in_o his_o spirit_n and_o with_o understanding_n while_o it_o may_v be_v many_o neither_o care_n for_o the_o spirit_n
