The robe of the ephod with pomegranates and bells 36 The plate of the mitre 39 The embroidered coat 40 The garments for Aarons sons ANd take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother his sons with him from among the children of Israel that he may minister unto me in the priests office even Aaron Nadab Abihu Eleazar Ithamar Aarons sons 2 And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty 3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise-hearted whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom that they may make Aarons garments to consecrate him that he may minister unto me in the Priests office 4 And these are the garments which they shall make a breast-plate and an ephod and a robe and a broidered coat a mitre and a girdle and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother and his sons that he may minister unto me in the priests office 5 And they shall take gold blue purple scarlet and fine linen 6 ¶ And they
that to smell thereto shall even be cut off from his people CHAP. It is much for you Ye take too much upon you seeing all the congregation are holy everyone of them and the LORD is among them wherefore then lift you up your selves above the congregation of the LORD 4 And when Moses heard it he fell upon his face 5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company saying Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his and who is holy and will cause him to come near unto him even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him 6 This do take you censers Korah and all his company 7 And put fire therein and put incense in them before the LORD to morrow and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose he shall be holy ye take too much upon you ye sons of Levi. 8 And Moses said unto Korah Hear I pray you ye sons of Levi 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them 10 And he hath brought thee near to him and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee and seek ye the priesthood also 11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the LORD and what is Aaron that ye murmure against him 12 ¶ And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab which said We will not come up 13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness except thou make thy self altogether a prince over us 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards wilt thou † Heb. here out put out the eyes of these men we will not come up 15 And Moses was very wroth and said unto the LORD * Gen. 4 4. Respect not thou their offering I have not taken one ass from them neither have I hurt one of them 16 And Moses said unto Korah Be thou and all thy company before the LORD thou and they and Aaron to morrow 17 And take every man his censer and put incense in them and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer two hundred and fifty censers thou also and Aaron each of you his censer 18 And they took every man his censer and put fire in them and said incense thereon and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron 19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation 20 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 21 Separate your selves from among this congregation that I may consume them in a moment 22 And they fell upon their faces and said O God the God of the spirits of all flesh shall one man sin and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation 23 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 24 Speak unto the congregation saying Get you up from about the taberlacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram and the elders of Israel followed him 26 And he spake unto the congregation saying Depart I pray you from the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs lest ye be consumed in all their sins 27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah Dathan and Abiram on every side and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood in the door of their tents and their wives and their sons and their little children 28 And Moses said Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works for I have not done them of mine own minde 29 If these men die † Heb. as every man dieth the common death of all men or if they be visited after the visitation of all men then

XIX 1 The confusion of Egypt 11 The foolishness of their princes 18 The calling of Egypt to the church 23 The covenant of Egypt A●●●ria Israel THe burden of Egypt Behold the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud and shall come into Egypt and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it 2 And I will † Heb. mingle set the Egyptians against the Egyptians and they shall fight every one against his brother and every one against his neighbour city against city and kingdom against kingdom 3 And the spirit of Egypt † Heb. shall be emptied shall fail in the midst thereof and I will † Heb. swallow up destroy the counsel thereof and they shall seek to the idols to the charmers and to them that have familiar spirits and to the wizards 4 And the Egyptians will I ‖ Or shut up give over into the hand of a cruel lord and a fierce king shall rule over them saith the Lord the LORD of hosts 5 And the waters shall fail from the sea and the river shall be wasted and dried up 6 And they shall turn the rivers far away and the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up the reeds and flags shall wither 7 The paper-reeds by the brooks by the mouth of the brooks and every thing sown by the brooks shall wither be driven away † Heb. a●● shall not be and be no more 8 The fishers also shall mourn and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish 9 Moreover they that work in fine flax and they that weave ‖ Or white works net-works shall be confounded 10 And they shall be broken in the † Heb. foundations purposes thereof all that make sluces and ponds † Heb. of ●●at 〈…〉 for fish 11 ¶ Surely the princes of Zoan are fo●ls the counsel of the wise counsellours of Pharaoh is become brutish how say ye unto Pharaoh I am the son of the wise the son of ancient kings 12 Where are they where are thy wise men and let them tell thee now and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt 13 The princes of Zoan are become fools the princes of Noph are deceived they have also seduced Egypt even ‖ Or governours † Heb. corners they that are the stay of the tribes thereof 14 The LORD hath mingled † Heb. a spirit of ●●●versities a perverse spirit in the midst thereof and they have caused Egyp to err in every work thereof as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit 15 Neither shall there be any work for Egypt which the head or tail branch or rush may do 16 In that day shall Egypt be like unto women and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts which he shaketh over it 17 And the land of Judah shall be a terrour unto Egypt every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts which he hath determined against it 18 ¶ In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak † Heb. 〈◊〉 lip the language of Canaan and swear to the LORD of hosts one shall be called the city ‖ Or of H●res or of the 〈◊〉 of destruction 19 In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD 20 And it shall be for a sign● and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressours and he shall send them a saviour and a great one and he shall deliver them 21 And the LORD shall be known to Egypt and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day and shall do sacrifice and oblation yea they shall vow a vow unto the LORD and perform it 22 And the LORD shall smite Egypt he shall smite and heal it and they shall return even to the LORD and he shall be intreated of them and shall heal them 23 ¶ In that dry shall there be a high-way out of Egypt to Assyria and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians 24 In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria even a blessing in the midst of the land 25 Whom the LORD of host shall bless saying Blessed be Egypt my people and Assyria the work of my hands and Israel mine inheritance CHAP. XX. A type prefiguring the shameful captivity of Egypt and Ethiopia IN the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and fought against Ashdod and took it 2 At the same time spake the LORD † Heb. by the hand of Isai●● by Isaiah the son of Amoz saying Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loyns and put off thy shoe from thy foot And he did so walking naked and bare-foot 3 And the LORD said Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and bare-foot three years for a signe and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia 4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away † Heb. the captivity of Egypt the Egyptians prisoners and
Israel neither seek the LORD 2 Yet he also is wise and will bring evil and will not † Heb. remove call back his words but will arise against the house of the evil doers and against the help of them that work iniquity 3 Now the Egyptians are men and not God and their horses flesh and not spirit when the LORD shall stretch out his hand both he that helpeth shall fall and he that is holpen shall fall down and they all shall fail together 4 For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him he will not be afraid of their voice nor abase himself for the ‖ Or multitude noise of them so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion and for the hill thereof 5 As birds flying so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem defending also he will deliver it and passing over he will preserve it 6 ¶ Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted 7 For in that day every man shall * Chap. 2.20 cast away his idols of silver and † Heb. the idols of his ●old his idols of gold which your own hands have made unto you for a sin 8 ¶ The shall the Assyriah fall with the sword not of a mighty man and the sword not of a mean man shall devour him but he shall d ee ‖ Or for fear of the sword from the sword and his young men shall be ‖ Or tributary † Heb. for melting or tribute discomfited 9 And † Heb. his rock shall pass away for fear he shall pass over to ‖ Or his strength his strong hold for fear and his princes shall be afraid of the ensigne saith the LORD whose fire is in Zion and his furnace in Jerusalem CHAP. XXXII 1 The blessings of Christs kingdom 9 Desolation is foreshown 15 Restauration is promised to succeed BEhold a king shall reign in righteousness and princes shall rule in judgement 2 And a man shall be as an hiding-place from the wind and a covert from the tempest as rivers of water in a dry place as the shadow of a † Heb. heavy great rock in a weary land 3 And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim and the ears of them that hear shall hearken 4 The heart also of the † Heb. basty rash shall understand knowledge and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak ‖ Or. elegantly plainly 5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal nor the churl said to be bountiful 6 For the vile person will speak villany and his heart will work iniquity to practise hypocrisie and to utter errour against the LORD to make empty the soul of the hungry and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail 7 The instruments also of the churl are evil he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words even ‖ Or when be speaketh against the poor in judgement when the needy speaketh right 8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things and by liberal things shall be ‖ Or be established stand 9 ¶ Rise up ye women that are at ease hear my voice ye careless daughters give ear unto my speech 10 † Heb. days above a year Many days and years shall ye be troubled ye careless women for the vintage shall fail the gathering shall not come 11 Tremble ye women that are at ease be troubled ye careless ones strip ye and make ye bare and gird sackcloth upon your loyns 12 They shall lament for the tears for † Heb. the fields of desire the pleasant fields for the fruitful vine 13 Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers ‖ Or burning 〈◊〉 upon c. yea upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city 14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken the multitude of the city shall be left the ‖ Or clifts and wateb towers forts and towers shall be for dens for ever a joy of wilde asses a pasture of flocks 15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high and * Chap. 29.17 the wilderness be a fruitful field and the fruitful field be counted for a forest 16 Then judgement shall dwell in the wilderness and righteousness remain in the fruitful field 17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever 18 And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation and in sure dwellings and in quiet resting-places 19 When it shall hail coming down on the forest ‖ Or and the city shall be utterly abased and the city shall be low in a low place 20 Blessed are ye that sowe beside all waters that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass CHAP. XXXIII 1 Gods judgements against the enemies of the church 13 The priviledges of the godly WO to thee that spoilest and thou wast not spoiled and dealest treacherously and they dealt not treacherously with thee when thou shalt cease to spoil thou shalt be spoiled and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously they shall deal treacherously with thee 2 O LORD be gracious unto us we have waited for thee be thou their arm every morning our salvation also in the time of trouble 3 At the noise of the tumult the people fled at the listing up of thy self the nations were scattered 4 And your spoil shall be gathered like the gathering of the caterpiller as the running to and fro of locusts shall he run upon them 5 The LORD is exalted for he dwelleth on high he hath filled Zion with judgement and righteousness 6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times and strength of † Heb. salvations salvation the fear of the LORD is his treasure 7 Behold their ‖ Or messengers valiant ones shall cry without the ambassadours of peace shall weep bitterly 8 The high-ways lie waste the way-saring man ceaseth he hath broken the covenant he hath despised the cities he regardeth no man 9 The earth mourneth and languisheth Lebanon is ashamed and ‖ Or withered away hewn down Sharon is like a wilderness and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits 10 Now will I rise saith the LORD now will I be exalted now will I lift up my self 11 Ye shall conceive chaff ye shall bring forth stubble your breath as fire shall devour you 12 And the people shall be as the burnings of lime as thorns cut up shall they be burnt in the fire 13 ¶ Hear ye that are far off what I have done and ye that are near acknowledge my might 14 The sinners in Zion are afraid fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire who amongst us shall dwell with
alone and through none other by me also they shall be ended and by none other 7 Then answered I and said What shall be the parting asunder of the times or when shall be the end of the first and the beginning of it that followeth 8 And he said unto me From Abraham unto Isaac when Jacob and Esau were born of him * Gen. 25.26 Jacobs hand held ‖ Or from the beginning first the heel of Esau 9 For Esau is the end of the world and Jacob is the beginning of it that followeth 10 The hand of man is betwixt the heel and the hand other question Esdras ask thou not 11 ¶ I answered then and said O Lord that bearest rule if I have found favour in thy sight 12 I beseech thee shew thy servant the end of thy tokens whereof thou shewedst me part the last night 13 So he answered and said unto me Stand up upon thy feet and hear a mighty sounding voice 14 And it shall be as it were a great ‖ Or earthquake motion but the place where thou standest shall not be moved 15 And therefore when it speaketh be not afraid for the word is of the end and the foundation of the earth is understood 16 And way because the speech of these things trembleth and is moved for it knoweth that the end of these things must be changed 17 And it hapned that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet and hearkned and behold there was a voice that spake and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters 18 And it said Behold the days come that I will begin to draw nigh and to vnit them that dwell upon the earth 19 And will begin to make inquisition of them what they be that have hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness and when the affliction of Sion shall be fulfilled 20 And when the world that shall begin to vanish away shall be ‖ Ot ●●a●●d finished then will I shew these tokens the books shall be opened before the firmament and they shall see all together 21 And the children of a year old shall speak with their voices the women with childe shall bring forth untimely children of three or four moneths old and they shall live and be raised up 22 And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown the full store-houses shall suddenly be found empty 23 And the trumpet shall give a sound which when every man heareth they shall be suddenly afraid 24 At that time shall friends fight one against another like enemies and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein the springs of the fountains shall stand still and in three hours they shall not run 25 Whosoever remaineth from all these that I have told thee shall escape and see my salvation and the end of your world 26 And the men that are received shall see it who have not tasted death from their birth and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed and turned into another meaning 27 For evil shall be put out and deceit shall be quenched 28 As for faith it shall flourish corruption shall be overcome and the truth which hath been so long without fruit shall be declared 29 And when he talked with me behold I looked by little and little upon him before whom I stood 30 And these words said he unto me I am come to shew thee the time of the night to come 31 If thou wilt pray yet more and fast seven days again I shall tell thee greater things ‖ See ch 13. vers 52. by day then I have heard 32 For thy voice is heard before the most High for the Mighty hath seen thy righteous dealing he hath seen also thy chastity which thou hast had ever since thy youth 33 And therefore hath he sent me to shew thee all these things and to say unto thee Be of good comfort and fear not 34 And hasten not with the times that are past to think vain things that thou mayest not hasten from the latter times 35 And it came to pass after this that I wept again and fasted seven days in like manner that I might fulfi● the three weeks which he told me 36 And in the eighth night was my heart vexed within me again and I began to speak before the most High 37 For my spirit was greatly set on fire and my soul was in distress 38 And I said O Lord thou speakest from the beginning of the creation even the first day and saidest thus * Gen. ● 1 Let heaven and earth be made and thy word was a perfect work 39 And then was the spirit and darknesses and silence were on every side the sound of mans voice was not yet formed 40 Then commandedst thou a fair light to come forth of thy treasures that thy work might appear 41 Upon the second day thou madest the spirit of the firmament and commandedst it to part asunder and to make a division betwixt the waters that the one part might go up and the other remain beneath 42 Upon the third day thou didst command that the waters should be gathered in the seventh part of the earth six parts hast thou died up and kept them to the intent that of these some being planted of God and tilled might serve thee 43 For as soon as thy word went forth the work was made 44 For immediately there we● great and innumerable fruit and many and divers pleasures for the taste and flowers of unchangeable colour and odours of wonderful smell and this was done the third day 45 * Gen. 1.14 Upon the fourth day thou commandedst that the sun should shine and the moon give her light and the waters were gathered that it should bring forth living creatures fowls and fishes and so it came to pass 48 For the dumb water and without life brought forth living things at the commandment of God that all people might praise thy wondrous works 49 Then didst thou ordain two living creatures the one thou called●t ‖ Bebemoth Enoch and the other Leviathan 50 And didst separate the one from the other for the seventh part namely where the water was gathered together might not hold them both 51 Unto Enoch thou gavest one part which was dried up the third day that he should dwell in the same part wherein are a thousand hills 52 But unto Leviathan thou gavest the seventh part namely the moist and hast kept him to be devoured of whom thou wilt and when 53 Upon the sixth day thou gavest commandment unto the earth that before thee it should bring forth beasts cattel and creeping things 54 And after these Adam also whom thou madest lord of all thy creatures
and he that buildeth as he that shall not dwell therein 43 He that soweth as if he should not reap so also he that planteth the vineyard as he that shall not gather the grapes 44 They that marry as they that shall get no children and they that marry not as the widowers 45 And therefore they that labour labour in vain 46 For strangers shall reap their fruits and spoil their goods overthrow their houses and take their children captives for in captivity and famine shall they get children 47 And they that occupy their merchandise with robbery the more they deck their cities their houses their possessions and their own persons 48 The more will I be angry with them for their sin saith the Lord. 49 Like as an whore envieth a right honest and vertuous woman 50 So shall righteousness hate iniquity when she decketh her self and shall accuse her to her face when he cometh that shall defend him that diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth 51 And therefore be ye not like thereunto nor to the works thereof 52 For yet a little and iniquity shall be taken away out of the earth and righteousness shall reign among you 53 Let not the sinner say that he hath not sinned for God shall burn coals of fire upon his head which saith before the Lord God and his glory I have not sinned 54 Behold the Lord knoweth all the works of men * Luke 16.15 their imaginations their thoughts and their hearts 55 Which spake but the word Let the earth be made * Gen. 1.1 and it was made Let the heaven be made and it was created 56 In his word were the stars made and he knoweth the * Psal 147.4 number of them 57 He searcheth the deep and the treasures thereof he hath measured the sea and what it containeth 58 He hath shut the sea in the midst of the waters and with his word hath he hanged the earth upon the waters 59 He spreadeth out the heavens like a vault upon the waters hath he founded it 60 In the desert hath he made springs of water and pools upon the tops of the mountains that the flouds might pour down from the high rocks to water the earth 61 He made man and put his heart in the midst of the body and gave him breath life and understanding 62 Yea and the Spirit of Almighty God which made all things and searcheth out all hidden things in the secrets of the earth 63 Surely he knoweth your inventions and what you think in your hearts even them that sin and would hide their sin 64 Therefore hath the Lord exactly searched out all your works and he will put you all to shame 65 And when your sins are brought forth ye shall be ashamed before men and your own sins shall be your accusers in that day 66 What will ye do or how will you hide your sins before God and his angels 67 Behold God himself is the judge fear him leave off from your sins and forget your iniquities to meddle no more with them for ever so shall God lead you forth and deliver you from all trouble 68 For behold the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you and they shall take away certain of you and feed you ‖ Or being unable to ref●●● being idle with things offered unto idols 69 And they that consent unto them shall be had in derision and in reproach and troden under foot 70 For there shall be in every place and in the next cities a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord. 71 They shall be like mad-men sparing none but still spoiling and destroying those that fear the Lord. 72 For they shall waste and take away their goods and cast them out of their houses 73 Then shall they be known who are my chosen and they shall be tried as the gold in the fire 74 Hear O ye my beloved saith the Lord behold the days of trouble are at hand but I will deliver you from the same 75 Be ye not afraid neither doubt for God is your guide 76 And the guide of them who keep my commandments and precepts saith the Lord God let not your sins weigh you down and let not your iniquities lift up themselves 77 Wo be unto them that are bound with their sins and covered with their iniquities like as a field is covered over with bushes and the path thereof covered with thorns that no man may travel through 78 It is ‖ Or shut out left undressed and is cast into the fire to be consumed therewith ¶ TOBIT CHAP. peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or s●with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or l●●● words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world ●ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or ●●●ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or ●●nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered
have you ignorant 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 3 Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus ‖ Or anathema accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 4 Now * Rom. 12.4 c. there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5 And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 9 To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 10 To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 11 But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 12 For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or † Gr. Greeks Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 14 For the body is not one member but many 15 If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 16 And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body 17 If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19 And if they were all one member where were the body 20 But now are they many members yet but one body 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 22 Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we ‖ Or put on bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 24 For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25 That there should be no ‖ Or division schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 26 And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 27 Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 28 And * Eph. 4.11 God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healings helps governments ‖ Or kinds diversities of tongues 29 Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all ‖ Or powers workers of miracles 30 Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31 But covet earnestly the best gifts And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way CHAP. XIII 1 All gifts 2 3 how excellent soever are nothing worth without charity 4 The praises thereof and 13 prelation before hope and faith THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 2 And though I have the gift of prophesie and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned have not charity it profiteth me nothing 4 Charity suffereth long and is kinde charity envieth not charity ‖ Or is not rash vaunteth not itself is not puffed up 5 Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 6 Rejoyceth not in iniquity but rejoyceth ‖ Or with the truth in the truth 7 Beareth all things beleeveth all things hopeth all things endureth all things 8 Charity never faileth but whether there be prophesies they shall fail whether there be tongues they shall cease whether there be knowledge it shall vanish away 9 For we know in part and we prophesie in part 10 But when that which is perfect is come then that which is in part shall be done away 11 When I was a childe I spake as a childe I understood as a childe I ‖ Or reasoned thought as a childe but when I became a man I put away childish things 12 For now we see through a glass † Gr. in a riddle darkly but then face to face now I know in part but then shall I know even as also I am known 13 And now abideth faith hope charity these three but the greatest of these is charity CHAP. XIV 1 Prophesie is commended 2 3 4 and preferred before speaking with tongues 6 by a comparison drawn from musical instruments 12 Both must be referred to edification 22 as to their true and proper end 26 The true use of each is taught 29 and the abuse taxed 34 Women are forbidden to speak in the church FOllow after charity and desire spiritual gifts but rather that ye may prophesie 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men but unto God for no man † Gr. beareth understandeth him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification and exhortation and comfort 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself but he that prophesieth edifieth the church 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied for greater is he that prophesieth then he that speaketh with tongues except he interpret that the church may receive edifying 6 Now brethren if I come unto you speaking with tongues what shall I profit you except I shall speak to you either by revelation or by knowledge or by prophesying or by doctrine 7 And even things without life giving sound whether pipe or harp except they give a distinction in the ‖ Or a tunes sounds how shall it be known what is piped or harped 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself to the battel 9 So likewise you except ye utter by the tongue words † Gr. significant easie to be understood how shall
justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. The just shall live by faith 12 And the law is not of faith but * Lev. 18.5 the man that doeth them shall live in them 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written * Deu. 21.23 Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith 15 Brethren I speak after the manner of men Though it be but a mans ‖ Or testament covenant yet if it be confirmed no man disanulleth or addeth thereto 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made He saith not And to seeds as of many but as of one And to thy seed which is Christ 17 And this I say that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disanul that it should make the promise of none effect 18 For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise but God gave it to Abraham by promise 19 Wherefore then serveth the law It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediatour 20 Now a mediatour is not a mediatour of one but God is one 21 Is the law then against the promises of God God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life verily righteousness should have been by the law 22 But the scripture hath concluded * Rom. 3.9 all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that beleeve 23 But before faith came we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed 24 Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a school-master 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus 27 For * Rom. 6. ● as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus 29 And if ye be Christs then are ye Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise CHAP. IV. 1 We were under the law till Christ came as the heir is under his guardian till he be of are 5 But Christ freed us from the law 7 therefore we are servants no longer to it 14 He remembreth their good will to him and his to them 22 and sheweth that we are the sons of Abraham by the free-woman NOw I say that the heir as long as he is a childe differeth nothing from a servant though he be lord of all 2 But is under tutours and governours until the time appointed of the father 3 Even so we when we were children were in bondage under the ‖ Or rudiments elements of the world 4 But when the fulness of the time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law 5 To redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons 6 And because ye are sons God hath sent forth * Rom. 8.15 the Spirit of his Son into your hearts crying Abba Father 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant but a son and if a son then an heir of God through Christ 8 Howbeit then when ye knew not God ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods 9 But now after that ye have known God or rather are known of God how turn ye ‖ Or back again to the weak and beggerly ‖ Or rudiments elements whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage 10 Ye observe days and moneths and times and years 11 I am afraid of you lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain 12 Brethren I beseech you be as I am for I am as ye are ye have not injured me at all 13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first 14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not nor rejected but received me as an angel of God even as Christ Jesus 15 ‖ Or What was thou Where is then the blessedness you spake of for I bear you record that if it had been
possible ye would have plucked out your own eyes and have given them to me 16 Am I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth 17 They zealously affect you but not well yea they would exclude ‖ Or us you that you might affect them 18 But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing and not onely when I am present with you 19 My little children of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you 20 I desire to be present with you now and to change my voice for ‖ Or I am perplezed for you I stand in doubt of you 21 Tell me ye that desire to be under the law do ye not hear the law 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons the one by a bond-maid the other by a free-woman 23 But he who was of the bond-woman was born after the flesh but he of the free-woman was by promise 24 Which things are an allegory for these are the two ‖ Or testaments covenants the one from the mount Sinai which gendereth to bondage which is Agar 25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia and ‖ Or is in the some rank with answereth to Jerusalem which now is and is in bondage with her children 26 But Jerusalem which is above is free which is the mother of us all 27 For it is written * Is 54.1 Rejoyce thou barren that bearest not break forth and cry thou that travailest not for the desolate hath many more children then she which hath an husband 28 Now we brethren as Isaac was are * Rom. 9.8 the children of promise 29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit even so it is now 30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture * Gen. 21.10 Cast out the bond-woman and her son for the son of the bond-woman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman 31 So then brethren we are not children of the bond-woman but of the free CHAP. V. 1 He moveth them to stand in their liberty 3 and not to observe circumoision 13 but rather love which is the sum of the law 19 He reckoneth up the works of the flesh 22 and the fruits of the Spirit 25 and exhorteth to walk in the Spirit STand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free and be not intangled again with the yoke of bondage 2 Behold I Paul say unto you that * Act 15.2 if ye be circumcised Christ shall profit you nothing 3 For I testifie again to every man that is circumcised that he is a debtour to do the whole law 4 Christ is become of no effect unto you whosoever of you are justified by the law ye are faln from grace 5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith 6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing nor uncircumcision but faith which worketh by love 7 Ye did run well ‖ Or who did drive you back who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth 8 This perswasion cometh not of him that calleth you 9 * 1 Cor. 5.6 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump 10 I have confidence in you through the Lord that you will be none otherwise minded but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgement whosoever he be 11 And I brethren if I yet preach circumcision why do I yet suffer persecution then is the offence of the cross ceased 12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you 13 For brethren ye have been called unto liberty onely use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh but by love serve one another 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word even in this * Lev. 19.18 Mat. 22.39 Rom. 13.9 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self 15 But if ye bite and devour one another take heed that ye be not consumed one of another 16 This I say then Walk in the Spirit and ‖ Or fulfil not ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other so that ye cannot do the things that ye would 18 But if ye be led by the Spirit ye are not under the law 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest which are these Adultery fornication uncleanness lasciviousness 20 Idolatry witchcraft hatred variance emulations wrath strife seditions heresies 21 Envyings murders drunkenness revellings and such like of the which I tell you before as I have also told you in time past that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is Love joy peace long-suffering gentleness goodness faith 23 Meekness temperance against such there is no law 24 And they that are Christs have crucified the flesh with the ‖ Or pas●ions affections and lusts 25 If we live in the Spirit let us also walk in the Spirit 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory provoking one another envying one another CHAP. VI. 1 He moveth them to deal mildly with a brother that hath slipped 2 and to bear one anothers burden 6 to be liberal to their teachers 9 and not weary of welt doing 12 He sheweth what they intend that preach circumcision 14 He glorieth in nothing save in the cross of Christ BRethren ‖ Or although if a man be overtaken in a fault ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness considering thy self lest thou also be tempted 2 Bear ye one anothers burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ 3 For if a man think himself to be something when he is nothing he deceiveth himself 4 But let every man prove his own work and then shall he have rejoycing in himself alone and not in another 5 For * 3 Co. 3.8 every man shall bear his own burden 6 * 1 Cor. 9.14 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things 7 Be not deceived God is not mocked for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap 8 For the that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption but he that soweth to the spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting 9 And * 2 Thes 3.13 let us not be weary in well-doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not 10 As we have therefore opportunity let us do good unto all men especially unto them who are of the houshold of faith 11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand 12 As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh they constrain you to be circumcised onely lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ 13 For neither they themselves who are
Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. IV. 1 He exhorteth to unity 7 and declareth that God therefore giveth divers 11 gifts unto men that his church might be 13 edified and 16 grown up in Christ 18 He calleth them from the impurity of the Gentiles 24 to put on the new man 25 to cast off lying and 29 corrupt communication I Therefore the prisoner ‖ Or in the Lord. of the Lord beseech you that ye * Phil. 1.27 Col. 1.10 1 Thes 2.12 walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called 2 With all lowliness and meekness with long-suffering forbearing one another in love 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace 4 There is one body and one Spirit even as ye are called in one hope of your calling 5 One Lord one faith one baptism 6 * Mal. 2.10 One God and Father of all who is above all and through all and in you all 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ 8 Wherefore he saith * Psal 68.18 When he ascended up on high he led ‖ Or a multitude of captives captivity captive and gave gifts unto men 9 Now that he ascended what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens that he might ‖ Or fulfil fill all things 11 * 1 Cor. 12.28 And he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastours and teachers 12 For the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministery for the edifying of the body of Christ 13 Till we all come ‖ Or into the unity in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man unto the measure of the ‖ Or. age stature of the fulness of Christ 14 That we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive 15 But * Zec. 8.15 ‖ Or being sincere speaking the truth in love may grow up into him in all things which is the head even Christ 16 * Col. 2.19 From whom the whole body fitly joyned together and compacted by that which every joynt supplieth according to the effectual working in the measure of every part maketh increase in the body unto the edifying of it self in love 17 This I say therefore and testifie in the Lord that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their minde 18 Having the understanding darkned being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them because of the * Rom. 1.21 ‖ Or hardness blindness of their heart 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness to work all uncleanness with greediness 20 But ye have not so learned Christ 21 If so be that ye have heard him and have been taught by him as the truth is in Jesus 22 That ye * Col. 3. ● put off concerning the former conversation the old man which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts 23 And * Rom. 1● 2 be renewed in the spirit of your minde 24 And that ye put on the new man which after God is created in righteousness and ‖ Or holiness of truth true holiness 25 Wherefore putting away lying * Zec. 8.16 speak every man truth with his neighbour for we are members one of another 26 * Ps 4.4 Be ye angry and sin not let not the sun go down upon your wrath 27 * Jam. 4.7 Neither give
place to the devil 28 Let him that stole steal no more but rather let him labour working with his hands the thing which is good that he may have ‖ Or to distribute to give to him that needeth 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth but that which is good ‖ Or to edifie profitably to the use of edifying that it may minister grace unto the hearers 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamour and evil-speaking be put away from you with all malice 32 And * 2 Cor. 2.10 Col. 3.12 13. be ye kinde one to another tender-hearted forgiving one another even as God for Christs sake hath forgiven you CHAP. V. 2 After general exhortations to love 3 to flee fornication 4 and all uncleanness 7 not to converse with the wicked 15 to walk warily and to be 18 filled with the Spirit 22 he descendeth to the particular duties how wives ought to obey their husbands 25 and husbands ought to love their wives 32 even as Christ doth his church BE ye therefore followers of God a dear children 2 And * Joh. 13.24 15.12 walk in love as Christ also hath loved us and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour 3 But * Col. 3.5 1 Thes 4.3 c. fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness let it not be once named amongst you as be cometh saints 4 Neither filthiness nor foolish talking nor jesting which are not convenient but rather giving of thanks 5 For this ye know that no whoremonger nor unclean person nor covetous man who is an idolater hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of ‖ Or unbelief disobedience 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them 8 For ye were sometimes darkness but now are ye light in the Lord walk as children of light 9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them 12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret 13 But all things that are ‖ Or discovered reproved are made manifest by the light for whatsoever doth make manifest is light 14 Wherefore he saith * Isa 60.1 Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light 15 * Col. 4.5 See then that ye walk circumspectly not as fools but as wise 16 Redeeming the time because the days are evil 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is 18 And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the Spirit 19 Speaking to your selves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 21 Submitting your selves one to another in the fear of God 22 * Col. 3.18 Tit. 2.5 1 Pet. 3.1 Wives submit your selves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord. 23 For * 1 Cor. 11.3 the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church and he is the Saviour of the body 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing 25 * Col. 3.19 Husbands love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it 26 That he might sanctifie and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies he that loveth his wife loveth himself 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even as the Lord the church 30 For we are members of his body of his flesh and of his bones 31 * Gen 2.24 Mat. 19.5 Mar. 10.7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joyned unto his wife and they * 1 Cor. 6.16 two shall be one flesh 32 This is a great mystery but I speak concerning Christ the church 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself and the wife see that she reverence her husband CHAP. I. 1 S Paul certifieth them of the good opinion which he had of their faith love and patience 11 and therewithal useth divers reasons for the comforting of them in persecution whereof the ch●efest is taken from the righteous judgement of God PAul and Silvanus and Timotheus unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 2 Grace unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 3 * ● Thes 3.2 3. II. 1 He willeth them to continue stedfast in the truth received 3 sheweth that there shall ●e a departure from the faith 9 and a discovery of Antichrist before the day of the Lord come 15 and thereupon repeateth his former exhortation and pra●eth for them NOw we beseech you brethren by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and by our gathering together unto him 2 That ye be not soon shaken in minde or be troubled neither by spirit nor by word nor by letter as from us as that the day of Christ is at hand 3 Let no man deceive you by any means for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God shewing himself that he is God 5 Remember ye not that when I was yet with you I told you these things 6 And now ye know what ‖ Or ●●●●eth withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work onely he who now letteth will let until he be taken out of the way 8 And then shall that wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume * Isa 11.4 Hos 6.5 Rev. 2 16. with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming 9 Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should beleeve a lie 12 That they all might be damned who beleeved not the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness 13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you brethren beloved of the Lord because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit belief of the truth 14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Therefore brethren stand fast and hold the traditions which ye have been taught whether by word or our epistle 16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God even our Father which hath loved us and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace 17 Comfort your hearts and stablish you in every good word work CHAP. III. 1 He craveth their prayers for himself 3 testifieth what confidence he hath in them 5 maketh request to God in their be●asf 6 giveth them divers precepts especially to shun idleness and ill company 16 and last of all concludeth with prayer and salutation FInally brethren * Eph. 6.17 Col. 4.3 pray for us that the word of the Lord † Gr. may run may have free course and be glorified even as it is with you 2 And that we may be d●livered from † Gr. absurd unreasonable and wicked men for all men have not faith 3 But the Lord is faithful who shall stablish you and keep you from evil 4 And we have confidence in the Lord touching you that ye both do and will do the things which we command you 5 And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into ‖ Or the patience of Christ the patient waiting for
tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 A●rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 ●ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption f●r us 13 For it * Lev. 1● 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * E● 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou ●●st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11● 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new m●d● consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and
the rich and to despise the poor brethren 13 rather we are to be loving and merciful 14 and not to boast of faith where no deeds are 17 which is but a dead faith 19 the faith of devils 21 not of Abraham 25 and Rabab MY brethren have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory with * Lev. 19.15 Deut. 1.17 and 16.19 Prov. 24.23 respect of persons 2 For if there come unto your † Gr. synagogue assembly a man with a gold ring in goodly apparel and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment 3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing and say unto him Sit thou here ‖ Or well or seemly in a good place and say to the poor Stand thou there or sit here under my footstool 4 Are ye not then partial in your selves and are become judges of evil thoughts 5 Hearken my beloved brethren Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith and heirs of ‖ Or that the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him * Lev. 19.18 Rom 13.9 6 But ye have des●ised the poor Do not rich men oppress you and draw you before the judgment-seats 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called 8 If ye fulfil the royal saw according to the scripture * Lev. 19.18 Rom 13.9 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self ye do well 9 But if ye have respect to persons ye commit sin and are convinced of the law as transgressours 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point he is guisty of all 11 For ‖ Or that law which said he that said Do not commit adultery said also Do not kill Now if thou commit no adultery yet if thou kill thou art become a transgressour of the law 12 So speak ye c so do as they the shall be judged by the law of liberty 13 For he shall have judgement without mercy that hath shewed no mercy and mercy ‖ Or glorieth rejoyceth against judgement 14 What doth it profit my brethren though a man say he hath faith and have not works can faith save him 15 If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food 16 And one of you say unto them Depart in peace be you warmed and filled notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body what doth it profit 17 Even so faith if it hath not works is dead being † Gr by it self alone 18 Yea a man may say Thou hast faith and I have works shew me thy faith ‖ Some copies read by thy works without thy works I will shew thee my faith by my works 19 Thou beleevest that there is one God thou doest well the devils also beleeve and tremble 20 But wilt thou know O vain man that faith without works is dead 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar 22 ‖ Or thou seest Seest thou how faith wrought with his works and by works was faith made perfect 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith * Gen. 15.6 Rum 4.3 Gal. 3.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was imputed unto him for righteousness and he was called the friend of God 24 Ye see then how the by works a man is justified not by faith onely 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the Harlot justified by works when she had received the messengers and had sent them out another way 26 For as the body without the ‖ Or breath spirit is dead so faith without works is dead also CHAP. III. 1 We are not rashly or arrogantly to reprove others 5 but rather to bridle the tongue a little member but a powerful instrument of much good and great barm 13 They who be truly wise be midde and peaceable without envying and strife MY brethren be not many masters knowing that we shall receive the greater ‖ Or judgement condemnation 2 For in many things we offend all * Ecclus. 14.1 and 19.16 and 25.8 If any man offend not in word the same is a perfect man and able also to bridle the whole body 3 Behold we put bits in the horses mouths that they may obey us and we turn about their whole body 4 Behold also the ships which though they be so great and are driven of fierce winds yet are they turned about with a very small helm whithersoever the governour listeth 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasteth great things Behold how great ‖ Or. wood a matter a little fire kindl●th 6 And the tongue is a fire a world of iniquity so is the tongue amongst our members that it defileth the whole body and setteth on fire the course of nature and it is let on fire of hell 7 For every † Gr. nature kinde of beasts and of birds and of serpents and things in the sea is tamed and hath been tamed of † Gr. nature of man mankinde 8 But the tongue can no man tame it is an unruly evil full of deadly poyson 9 Therewith bless we God even the Father and therewith curse we men which are made after the similitude of God 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing My brethren these things ought not so to be 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same ‖ Or bek place sweet water and bitter 12 Can the fig-tree my brethren bear olive-berries either a vine sigs so can no fountain both yeeld salt water and fresh 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge amongst you let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts glory not and lie not against the truth 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above but is earthly ‖ Or natural sensual devilish 16 For where envying and strife is there is † Gr tumult or unquietness confusion and every evil work 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure then peaceable gentle and easte to be intreated full of mercy and good fruits ‖ Or without wrangling without partiality and without hypocrisie 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace CHAP. IV. 1 We are to strive against covetousness 4 intemperance 5 pride 11 detraction and rash judgement of others 13 and not to be confident in the good success of worldly business but mindful ever of the uncertainty of this life to commit our selves and all our affairs to Gods providence FRom whence come wars and ‖ Or brawlings fightings among you come they not hence even of your ‖ Or pleasures lusts that war in your members 2 Ye suit and have not ye kill and desire to have and cannot obtain ye sight
seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and † Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP. V. 1 The book sealed with seven seals 9 which onely the Lamb that was slain is worthy to open 12 Therefore the elders praise him 9 and confess that he redeemed them with his blood ANd I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside sealed with seven seals 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice Who is worthy to open the book and to loose the seals thereof 3 And no man in heaven nor in earth neither under the earth was able to open the book neither to look thereon 4 And I wept much because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book neither to look thereon 5 And one of the elders saith unto me Weep not behold * Gen. 19.9 the Lion of the tribe of Judah the root of David hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof 6 And I behold and lo in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts and in the midst of the elders stood a Lamb as it had been slain having seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne 8 And when he had taken the book the four beasts and four and twenty eiders fell down before the Lamb having every one of them harps and golden vials full of ‖ Or in●nse odours which are the prayers of saints 9 And they sung a new song saying Thou art worthy to take the book and to open the seals thereof for thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by thy bloud out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation 10 * 1 Pet. 2.9 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth 11 And I beheld and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders and the number of them was * Dan. 7.10 ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands 12 Saying with a loud voice Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3● Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
darkness and his name shall be covered with darkness 5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun nor known any thing this hath more rest then the other 6 ¶ Yea though he live a thousand years twice told yet hath he seen no good do not all go to one place 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth and yet the † Heb. soul appetite is not filled 8 For what hath the wise more then the fool what hath the poor that knoweth to walk before the living 9 ¶ Better is the sight of the eyes † Heb. then the walking of the soul then the wandring of the desire this is also vanity and vexatio● of spirit 10 That which hath been is named already and it is known that it is man neither may he contend with him that is mightier then he 11 ¶ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity what is man the better 12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life † Heb. the number of the days of the life of his vanity all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as * Ps 144.4 a shadow for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun CHAP. VII 1 Remedies against vanity are a good name 2 mortification 7 patients 11 wisdom 23 The difficulty of wisdom A * Prov. 25.30 22.1 Good name is better then precious ointment and the day of death then the day of ones birth 2 ¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning then to go to the house of feasting for that is the end of all men and the living will lay it to his heart 3 ‖ Or Anger Sorrow is better then laughter for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better 4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth 5 * Prov. 13.18 15.31.32 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise then for a man to hear the song of fools 6 For as the † Heb. sound crackling of thorns under a pot so is the laughter of the fool this also is vanity 7 ¶ Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad * Deut. 16.19 and a gift destroyeth the heart 8 Better is the end of a thing then the beginning thereof and the patient in spirit is better then the proud in spirit 9 * Prov. 14.17 16.32 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry for anger resteth in the bosom of fools 10 Say not thou What is the cause that the former days were better then these for thou dost not enquire † Heb. out of wisdom wisely concerning this 11 ¶ Wisdom ‖ Or as good at an inheritance yea better too is good with an inheritance and by it there is profit to them that see the sun 12 For wisdom is a † Heb. shadow defence and money is a defence but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom giveth life to them that have it 13 Consider the work of God for * Ch. 1.15 who can make that straight which he hath made crooked 14 In the day of prosperity be joyful but in the day of adversity consider God also hath † Heb. made set the one over against the other to the end that man should finde nothing after him 15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness 16 Be not righteous overmuch neither make thyself over-wise why shouldest thou † Heb. be desolate destroy thy self 17 Be not overmuch wicked neither be thou foolish why shouldest thou die † Heb. not in thy time before thy time 18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this yea also from this withdraw not thine hand for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all 19 * Prov. 21.22 24.5 Chap. 9.16 Wisdom strengthneth the wise more then ten mighty men which are in the city 20 * 1 King 8 46. Prov. 20.9 1 Joh. 1.8 For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not 21 Also † Heb. give not 〈◊〉 beant take no heed unto all words that are spoken lest thou hear thy servant curse thee 22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thy self likewise hast cursed others 23 ¶ All this have I proved by wisdom I said I will be wise but it was far from me 24 That which is far off and exceeding deep who can finde it out 25 † Heb. I and my heart compassed I applied mine heart to know and to search and to seek out wisdom and the reason of things and to know the wickedness of folly even of foolishness and madness 26 * Prov. 22.14 And I finde more bitter then death the woman whose heart is snares and nets and her hands as bands † Heb. he that is good before God whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her but the sinner shall be taken by her 27 Behold this have I found saith the preacher ‖ Or weighing one thing after another to finde out the reason counting one by one to finde out the account 28 Which yet my soul seeketh but I finde not one man among a thousand have I found but a woman among all those have I not forme 29 Lo this enely have I found * Gen. 1 ●● that God hath made man upright but they have sought out many inventions CHAP. VIII 1 Kings are greatly to be respected 6 The divine providence is to be observed 12 It is better with the godly in adversity then with the wicked in prosperity 16 The work of God is unsearchable WHo is as the wise man and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing * Pr. 17.24 a mans wisdom maketh his face to shine and † Heb. the strength the boldness of his face shall be changed 2 I counsel thee to keep the kings commandment and that in regard of the oath of God 3 Be not hasty to go out of his sight stand not in an evil thing for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him 4 Where the word of a king is there is power and who may say unto him What doest thou 5 Whoso keepeth the commandment † Heb. shall know shall feel no evil thing and a wise mans heart discerneth both time and judgement 6 ¶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgement therefore the misery of man is great upon him 7 For he knoweth not that which shall be for who can tell him ‖ Or how it shall be when it shall be 8 There is no man that hath power * Job 14.5 over the spirit to retain the spirit neither hath be power in the day of death and there is no ‖ Or easting off weapons discharge in
that war neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it 9 All this have I seen and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt 10 And so I saw the wicked buried who had come and gone from the place of the holy and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done this is also vanity 11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily therefore the heart of the sons of men is ●●●ly set in them to do evil 12 ¶ Though a sinner do evil an hundred times and his days be prolonged yet surely I know that * Ps 37.11 18 19. it shall be well with them that fear God which fear before him 13 But it shall not be well with the wicked neither shall he prolong his days which are as a shadow because he feareth not before God 14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth that there be just men unto whom it * Ps 13.14 hapneth according to the work of the wicked again there be wicked men to whom it hapneth according to the work of the righteous I said that this also is vanity 15 * Ch. 3.22 Then I commended mirth because a man hath no better thing under the sun then to eat and to drink and to be merry for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life which God giveth him under the sun 16 ¶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done upon the earth for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes 17 Then I behold all the work of God that a man cannot finde out the work that is done under the sun because though a man labour to seek it out yet he shall not finde it yea further though a wise man think to know it yet shall be not be able to finde it CHAP. IX 1 Like things happen to good and bad 4 There is a necessity of death unto men 7 Comfort is all their portion in this life 11 Gods providence ruleth over all 13 Wisdom is better then strength FOr all this † Heb. I gave or sit to my heart I considered in my heart even to declare all this that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them 2 * Ps 73.3 12 13. Psal 3.15 All things come alike to all there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked to the good and to the clean and to the unclean to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not as is the good so is the sinner and he that sweareth as be that feareth an oath 3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun that there is one event unto all yea also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil and madness is in their heart while they live and after that they go to the dead 4 ¶ For to him that is joyned to all the living there is hope for a living dog is better then a dead lion 5 For the living know that they shall die but the dead know not any thing neither have they any more a reward for the memory of them is forgotten 6 Also their love and their hatred and their envy is now perished neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun 7 ¶ Go thy way eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a merry heart for God now accepteth thy works 8 Let thy garments be always white and let thy head lack no ointment 9 † Heb. see or enjoy life Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity which he hath given thee under the sun all the days of thy vanity * Ch. 2.24 3.13 5.18 for that is thy portion in this life and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun 10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do do it with thy might for there is no work nor device nor knowledge nor wisdom in the grave whither thou goest 11 ¶ I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swilt nor the battel to the strong neither yet bread to the wise nor yet riches to men of understanding nor yet favour to men of skill but time and chance hapneth to them all 12 For man also knoweth not his time as the fishes that are taken in an evil net as the birds that are caught in the snare so are the sons of men * Pr. 29.6 snared in an evil time when it falleth suddenly upon them 13 ¶ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun and it seemed great unto me 14 There was a little city and few men within it and there came a great king against it besieged it built great bulwarks against it 15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man and he by his wisdom delivered the city yet no man remembred that same poor man 16 * Pr. 21.22 Ch. 7.19 Then said I Wisdom is better then strength nevertheless the poor mans wisdom is despised and his words are not heard 17 The words of w●se men are heard in quiet more then the cry of him that ruleth among fools 18 Wisdom is better then weapons of war but one sinner destroyeth much good CHAP. Flies of death DEad flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour 2 A wise mans heart is at his right hand but a fools heart is at his lest 3 Yea also when he that is a fool walketh by the way † Heb. his heart his wisdom faileth him and he saith to every one that he is a fool 4 It the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee leave not thy place for yeelding pacifieth great offences 5 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun as an errour which proceedeth † Heb. from before from the ruler 6 Folly is set † Heb. in great heights in great dignity and the rich sit in low place 7 I have seen servants * Pr. 30.22 upon horses and princes walking as servants upon the earth 8 * Ps 7.15 Pr. 26.27 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it and whoso breaketh an hedge a serpent shall bite him 9 Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby 10 If the iron be blunt and he do not whet the edge then must he put to more
