study_v they_o and_o the_o matter_n contain_v in_o they_o and_o to_o preach_v the_o word_n of_o god_n scripture-truthe_n plain_o and_o affectionate_o as_o those_o who_o have_v find_v favour_n to_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o have_v our_o understanding_n open_v to_o understand_v the_o scripture_n to_o have_v our_o will_n bow_v to_o god_n reveal_v will_n and_o our_o affection_n warm_v with_o love_n to_o the_o truth_n and_o zeal_n for_o it_o and_o as_o those_o who_o have_v in_o themselves_o experiment_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o declare_v unto_o other_o beside_o minister_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o read_v the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o in_o so_o do_v although_o for_o the_o present_a they_o be_v tie_v unto_o word_n yet_o this_o do_v in_o no_o wise_n quench_v the_o spirit_n the_o scripture_n themselves_o be_v dictate_v by_o the_o spirit_n so_o when_o we_o pray_v we_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v for_o such_o thing_n and_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n we_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o faith_n to_o come_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n name_n merit_n mediation_n trust_v to_o be_v hear_v and_o answer_v for_o christ_n sake_n with_o earnestness_n and_o importunity_n and_o so_o with_o such_o sigh_n and_o groan_n which_o be_v unutterable_a which_o can_v sufficient_o be_v express_v in_o word_n 2._o as_o believer_n before_o christ_n particular_o moses_n and_o aaron_n have_v the_o spirit_n and_o his_o help_n and_o assistance_n in_o prayer_n so_o far_o as_o be_v requisite_a notwithstanding_o they_o sometime_o use_v prescribe_v form_n of_o god_n own_o indite_v &_o appoint_v and_o as_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n when_o he_o pray_v in_o the_o word_n of_o david_n psal_n 22.1_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o so_o those_o that_o be_v christ_n may_v pray_v also_o in_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o use_v the_o prayer_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o prayer_n for_o matter_n method_n word_n compose_v by_o he_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n without_o measure_n &_o record_v in_o the_o very_a form_n of_o a_o prayer_n and_o with_o this_o preface_n when_o you_o pray_v say_v etc._n etc._n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o be_v by_o the_o evangelist_n move_v and_o assist_v infallible_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n if_o that_o place_n be_v urge_v 1_o cor._n 14.15_o i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o understand_v also_o i_o answer_v it_o follow_v i_o will_v sing_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o understand_v also_o so_o that_o if_o the_o former_a part_n can_v possible_o with_o any_o good_a reason_n be_v expound_v so_o as_o to_o debar_v we_o from_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n the_o latter_a will_v exclude_v david_n and_o all_o scripture-psalme_n too_o out_o of_o the_o church_n but_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o that_o place_n be_v of_o another_o importance_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o context_n and_o that_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v this_o i_o will_v not_o make_v use_n of_o the_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n enable_v i_o to_o speak_v in_o a_o unknown_a or_o strange_a language_n either_o in_o pray_v to_o or_o praise_v of_o god_n in_o the_o church_n where_o it_o be_v not_o understand_v by_o the_o unlearned_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v to_o edification_n my_o own_o spirit_n or_o i_o may_v indeed_o pray_v according_a to_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o make_v use_n outward_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o tongue_n that_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o pray_v but_o i_o make_v no_o use_n of_o my_o understanding_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o other_o i_o resolve_v therefore_o so_o to_o pray_v and_o so_o to_o sing_v as_o i_o may_v be_v understand_v by_o other_o even_o as_o if_o i_o have_v no_o such_o gift_n of_o tongue_n as_o a_o man_n will_v pray_v that_o have_v not_o that_o gift_n of_o tongue_n which_o be_v a_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n 3._o i_o come_v to_o my_o three_o proposition_n and_o that_o be_v to_o prove_v that_o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o take_v away_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n as_o a_o prayer_n and_o be_v it_o so_o as_o be_v presume_v in_o the_o objection_n that_o it_o be_v give_v only_o for_o that_o time_n until_o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o that_o it_o be_v out_o of_o date_n in_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n even_o this_o evangelical_n form_n of_o prayer_n like_o the_o legal_a observation_n i_o say_v be_v it_o so_o than_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n shall_v cease_v both_o as_o a_o pattern_n and_o as_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n it_o shall_v neither_o be_v any_o more_o since_o pentecost_n a_o directory_n or_o liturgy_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o teach_v christian_n to_o pray_v and_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o promise_v do_v not_o necessary_o take_v away_o all_o help_n or_o direction_n from_o christ_n or_o from_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o prophet_n so_o that_o they_o shall_v thenceforth_o be_v void_a and_o of_o none_o effect_n to_o all_o intent_n and_o
purpose_n about_o or_o concern_v prayer_n if_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o teach_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n if_o those_o scripture_n you_o have_v a_o anoint_v that_o teach_v you_o all_o thing_n and_o when_o he_o come_v he_o shall_v lead_v you_o into_o all_o truth_n do_v not_o discharge_v we_o from_o the_o use_n of_o man_n teach_v we_o and_o preach_v unto_o we_o and_o from_o our_o own_o read_v it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o teach_v and_o to_o help_v christian_n to_o offer_v up_o this_o prayer_n and_o all_o other_o their_o prayer_n in_o the_o name_n merit_n and_o mediation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o stir_v up_o in_o they_o good_a and_o holy_a desire_n agreeable_a to_o the_o request_n or_o petition_n continue_v in_o this_o prayer_n and_o to_o descend_v to_o many_o particular_a desire_n and_o petition_n and_o to_o express_v those_o desire_n in_o proper_a word_n and_o significant_a expression_n all_o which_o desire_n be_v summary_o comprehend_v in_o the_o petition_n and_o word_n or_o expression_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n i_o say_v this_o be_v the_o office_n and_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o do_v in_o no_o wise_a take_v away_o all_o lawful_a use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n as_o a_o prayer_n for_o sure_o the_o holy_a spirit_n will_v not_o therefore_o refuse_v to_o assist_v we_o when_o we_o pray_v this_o prayer_n because_o it_o be_v a_o prayer_n make_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o register_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n write_v by_o those_o who_o be_v full_a of_o and_o move_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o that_o work_n nor_o do_v i_o believe_v that_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o be_v the_o god_n of_o order_n and_o not_o of_o confusion_n will_v suggest_v or_o infuse_v into_o we_o such_o desire_n as_o shall_v necessary_o turn_v we_o out_o of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n while_o we_o be_v use_v it_o in_o a_o right_a manner_n it_o be_v not_o probable_a that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n will_v turn_v we_o out_o of_o the_o road_n wherein_o the_o son_n appoint_v we_o to_o go_v to_o the_o father_n and_o i_o pray_v what_o desire_n be_v there_o that_o be_v holy_a just_a and_o good_a such_o be_v all_o the_o desire_n of_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v author_n but_o be_v comprehend_v in_o this_o prayer_n doubtless_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o the_o apostle_n day_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n so_o it_o be_v no_o disparagement_n to_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n which_o christian_n have_v in_o these_o day_n to_o be_v regulate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o so_o consequent_o by_o that_o form_n which_o he_o have_v leave_v we_o must_v the_o whole_a congregation_n be_v tie_v up_o to_o the_o form_n of_o the_o speaker_n whether_o minister_n or_o other_o in_o prayer_n and_o may_v he_o in_o no_o wise_n be_v guide_v by_o christ_n prayer_n belove_a brethren_n whilst_o you_o so_o judge_v be_v you_o not_o partial_a in_o yourselves_o and_o to_o yourselves_o if_o it_o be_v ask_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o when_o we_o have_v be_v pray_v a_o long_a time_n either_o according_a to_o a_o premeditate_a form_n or_o a_o conceive_a prayer_n or_o in_o a_o mix_a way_n betwixt_o both_o for_o the_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n we_o yet_o conclude_v our_o prayer_n with_o the_o lord_n prayer_n be_v not_o this_o a_o vain_a repetition_n answ_n for_o as_o much_o as_o when_o we_o have_v pray_v our_o best_a we_o may_v have_v fail_v in_o something_o our_o prayer_n may_v have_v be_v defective_a imperfect_a it_o be_v not_o therefore_o vain_a but_o to_o purpose_n and_o very_o reasonable_a to_o rehearse_v that_o prayer_n wherein_o be_v nothing_o defective_a nothing_o superfluous_a nothing_o out_o of_o its_o due_a place_n and_o order_n nor_o be_v this_o a_o innovation_n it_o be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o ancient_a church_n concludit_fw-la quam_fw-la totâ—m_fw-la pâ—titionem_fw-la fere_n omnis_fw-la ecclesia_fw-la dominica_n oratione_fw-la concludit_fw-la if_o we_o will_v believe_v austin_n in_o his_o 59_o epistle_n q._n 5._o where_o he_o tell_v that_o the_o church_n do_v general_o conclude_v their_o prayer_n plead_v with_o god_n for_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n with_o this_o argument_n as_o or_o because_o we_o forgive_v those_o who_o trespass_n against_o we_o and_o do_v not_o always_o pray_v against_o temptation_n if_o they_o seek_v to_o justify_v their_o not_o use_v the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o their_o not_o imitate_v it_o in_o the_o former_a of_o these_o particular_n lest_o they_o shall_v occasion_v many_o to_o pray_v against_o themselves_o because_o they_o can_v find_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o forgive_v their_o brethren_n to_o this_o we_o reply_v that_o all_o our_o prayer_n ought_v to_o be_v according_a to_o this_o model_n or_o pattern_n themselves_o be_v judges_n to_o the_o lord_n prayer_n bring_v we_o all_o our_o prayer_n if_o they_o be_v not_o according_a to_o this_o rule_n it_o be_v because_o as_o to_o that_o thing_n wherein_o they_o be_v irregular_a or_o not_o conform_v hereto_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v not_o in_o they_o 2._o if_o we_o will_v not_o hear_v god_n commandment_n to_o forgive_v our_o brethren_n how_o shall_v we_o expect_v god_n shall_v hear_v our_o prayer_n for_o forgiveness_n we_o must_v both_o pray_v and_o practice_v according_a to_o god_n will_v if_o we_o will_v have_v our_o will_n do_v if_o we_o will_v have_v god_n fulfil_v our_o desire_n 3._o the_o crookedness_n of_o man_n heart_n and_o way_n can_v be_v no_o right_a rule_n sin_n against_o which_o the_o curse_n be_v denounce_v by_o the_o priest_n on_o mount_n ebal_n and_o to_o which_o the_o congregation_n say_v amen_o obj._n papist_n and_o profane_v ignorant_a protestant_n make_v a_o ill_a use_n of_o this_o good_a prayer_n make_v a_o kind_n of_o idol_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v lay_v it_o aside_o after_o the_o example_n of_o hezekiah_n who_o demolish_v the_o brazen_a serpent_n when_o it_o be_v abuse_v to_o idolatry_n 2_o king_n 18.4_o answ_n some_o man_n abuse_n of_o natural_a thing_n must_v not_o hinder_v or_o prejudice_v other_o in_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n to_o timothy_n 1_o epist_n chap._n 1.8_o say_v of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o law_n be_v good_a if_o a_o man_n use_v it_o lawful_o so_o say_v i_o of_o the_o prayer_n of_o our_o lord_n the_o prayer_n be_v good_a if_o a_o man_n use_v it_o lawful_o if_o the_o mere_a abuse_n of_o thing_n shall_v take_v away_o all_o lawful_a use_n of_o they_o we_o shall_v soon_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o benefit_n both_o of_o god_n creature_n and_o of_o his_o ordinance_n
from_o the_o lord_n that_o in_o this_o and_o all_o other_o thing_n i_o may_v be_v find_v faithful_a if_o as_o often_o as_o god_n people_n meet_v together_o to_o worship_n god_n public_o and_o especial_o upon_o the_o lord_n day_n this_o prayer_n also_o may_v be_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n be_v a_o sacrifice_n and_o incense_n which_o our_o high_a priest_n have_v consecrate_v to_o god_n and_o his_o father_n and_o to_o our_o god_n and_o our_o father_n i_o shall_v think_v it_o may_v be_v a_o good_a supplement_n of_o the_o defect_n and_o some_o emendation_n of_o the_o error_n in_o our_o prayer_n especial_o in_o such_o day_n of_o division_n as_o we_o be_v wherein_o good_a man_n be_v split_v into_o so_o many_o several_a party_n and_o opinion_n in_o matter_n of_o church_n and_o state_n that_o whilst_o some_o holy_a man_n in_o their_o heart_n say_v amen_o to_o some_o prayer_n put_v up_o in_o their_o name_n by_o the_o minister_n other_o as_o holy_a as_o they_o in_o their_o heart_n say_v god_n forbid_v or_o that_o be_v far_o from_o we_o this_o be_v a_o public_a prayer_n and_o no_o private_a christian_n but_o aught_o to_o say_v amen_o unto_o it_o however_o we_o be_v divide_v in_o more_o particular_a request_n we_o ought_v all_o to_o concentre_v and_o agree_v in_o these_o general_a neessary_a thing_n herein_o pray_v for_o forasmuch_o therefore_o as_o when_o we_o come_v together_o in_o the_o church_n to_o pray_v there_o be_v too_o too_o often_o division_n among_o we_o though_o we_o be_v together_o in_o one_o place_n yet_o not_o with_o one_o heart_n and_o because_o the_o promise_n be_v especial_o to_o two_o or_o three_o that_o agree_v together_o to_o ask_v any_o thing_n and_o to_o pray_v with_o divide_a heart_n this_o be_v in_o a_o sense_n not_o to_o pray_v this_o be_v not_o to_o seek_v the_o lord_n in_o due_a order_n to_o reform_v in_o some_o measure_n at_o least_o these_o abuse_n in_o prayer_n i_o shall_v recommend_v to_o all_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o every_o christian_a in_o they_o this_o one_o prayer_n the_o lord_n prayer_n to_o which_o christian_n of_o all_o nation_n tongue_n and_o language_n may_v agree_v to_o say_v amen_o for_o i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o which_o i_o deliver_v unto_o you_o how_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n the_o same_o time_n when_o he_o be_v by_o one_o of_o his_o disciple_n in_o effect_n ask_v this_o question_n how_o we_o shall_v pray_v say_v lord_n teach_v we_o to_o pray_v as_o john_n also_o teach_v his_o disciple_n he_o say_v when_o you_o pray_v say_v &_o c_o obj._n be_v these_o thing_n so_o why_o then_o do_v you_o not_o justify_v prescribe_v and_o impose_v liturgy_n or_o form_n of_o prayer_n answ_n i_o shall_v not_o so_o far_o launch_v forth_o into_o that_o controversy_n now_o as_o either_o to_o commend_v or_o condemn_v they_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v that_o this_o be_v make_v by_o a_o infallible_a spirit_n and_o again_o concern_v this_o our_o saviour_n christ_n have_v say_v that_o which_o he_o never_o say_v concern_v any_o other_o after_o this_o manner_n pray_v you_o or_o when_o you_o pray_v say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n i_o shall_v conclude_v all_o with_o some_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n 1._o and_o first_o as_o the_o angel_n say_v to_o joseph_n concern_v the_o bless_a virgin_n mary_n whilst_o he_o think_v of_o put_v she_o away_o privy_o fear_v not_o joseph_n thou_o son_n of_o david_n to_o take_v unto_o thou_o mary_n thy_o espouse_a wife_n for_o that_o be_v conceive_v in_o she_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o say_v i_o to_o all_o those_o just_a one_o who_o have_v have_v thought_n of_o put_v away_o this_o prayer_n privy_o fear_v not_o to_o take_v unto_o you_o this_o prayer_n which_o you_o have_v love_v and_o as_o it_o be_v espouse_v for_o that_o which_o be_v conceive_v in_o it_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o be_v not_o you_o as_o the_o papist_n be_v who_o think_v to_o make_v satisfaction_n to_o god_n and_o merit_n at_o his_o hand_n by_o the_o often_o repetition_n of_o their_o pater_fw-la noster_fw-la etc._n etc._n although_o without_o faith_n without_o understanding_n without_o holy_a affection_n and_o again_o do_v not_o you_o slight_v other_o prayer_n make_v according_a to_o this_o model_n or_o pattern_n by_o they_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o gift_n of_o prayer_n and_o above_o all_o thing_n my_o brethren_n beware_v of_o blaspheme_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n or_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n account_v and_o call_v it_o vain_a babble_n 2._o and_o you_o who_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n so_o that_o you_o have_v no_o need_n that_o any_o one_o teach_v you_o so_o that_o you_o can_v go_v without_o crutch_n and_o swim_v without_o bladder_n i_o mean_v pray_v without_o use_v form_n make_v by_o other_o man_n yet_o be_v not_o you_o therefore_o lift_v up_o or_o puff_v up_o and_o again_o be_v circumspect_a and_o never_o presume_v to_o utter_v any_o thing_n before_o the_o lord_n in_o public_a which_o will_v not_o hold_v weight_n if_o weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n so_o speak_v to_o god_n as_o consider_v that_o man_n also_o hear_v you_o and_o if_o ever_o you_o shall_v have_v any_o thing_n amiss_o in_o your_o prayer_n either_o for_o matter_n or_o for_o manner_n of_o expression_n lay_v not_o this_o at_o the_o door_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o rather_o father_n it_o thyself_o own_o it_o though_o with_o sorrow_n as_o a_o brat_n of_o thy_o own_o naughty_a heart_n or_o extravagant_a fancy_n and_o far_o have_v such_o a_o golden_a talon_n as_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n labour_v to_o improve_v for_o thy_o master_n and_o the_o church_n and_o thy_o own_o advantage_n and_o if_o you_o will_v be_v mighty_a in_o prayer_n be_v much_o in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n the_o best_a way_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n lie_v by_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n and_o neglect_v not_o to_o eye_n and_o follow_v the_o cloud_n of_o incense_n that_o be_v the_o prayer_n of_o saint_n in_o scripture_n which_o ascend_v to_o heaven_n when_o you_o will_v go_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o you_o who_o have_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n pray_v for_o the_o grace_n also_o and_o that_o more_o earnest_o because_o one_o dram_n of_o grace_n be_v worth_a many_o talent_n of_o gift_n 3._o you_o who_o have_v not_o the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n
