And they arrived at the countrey of the Gadarens which is over against Galilee 27 And when he went forth to land there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time and ware no clothes neither abode in any house but in the tombs 28 When he saw Jesus he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said What have I to do with thee Jesus thou Son of God most high I beseech thee torment me not 29 For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man For oftentimes it had caught him and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters and he brake the bands and was driven of the devil into the wilderness 30 And Jesus asked him saying What is thy name And he said Legion because many devils were entred into him 31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep 32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them And he suffered them 33 Then went the devils out of the man entred into the swine the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake were choked 34 When they that fed them saw what was done they fled and went and told it in the city and in the countrey 35 Then they went out to see what was done and came to Jesus and found the man out of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus clothed and in his right minde and they were afraid 36 They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed 37 ¶ Then the whole multitude of the countrey of the Gadarens round about besought him to depart from them for they were taken with great fear and he went up into the ship and returned back again 38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him but Jesus sent him away saying 39 Return to thine own house and shew how great things God hath done unto thee And he went his way and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him 40 And it came to pass that when Jesus was returned the people gladly received him for they were all waiting for him 41 ¶ * Mat. 9.18 And behold there came a man named Jairus and he was a ruler of the synagogue and he fell down at Jesus feet and besought him that he would come into his house 42 For he had one onely daughter about twelve years
¶ * 1 Cor. 1.12 And a certain Jew named Apollos born at Alexandria an eloquent man and mighty in the scriptures came to Ephesus 25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord and being fervent in the spirit he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord knowing onely the baptism of John 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue Whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard they took him unto them and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly 27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia the brethren wrote exhorting the disciples to receive him who when he was come helped them much which had beleeved through grace 28 For he mightily convinced the Jews and that publickly shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ CHAP. XIX 6 The holy Ghost is given by Pauls hands 9 The Jews blaspheme his doctrine which is confirmed by miracles 13 The Jewish exorcists 16 are beaten by the devil 19 Conjuring books are burnt 24 Demetrius for love of gain raiseth an uproar against Paul 35 which is appeased by the town clerk ANd it came to pass that while Apollos was at Corinth Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus and finding certain disciples 2 He said unto them Have ye received the holy Ghost since ye beleeved And they said unto him We have not so much as heard whether there be any holy Ghost 3 And he said unto them Unto what then were ye baptized And they said Unto Johns baptism 4 Then said Paul * Matth. 3.11 John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance saying unto the people That they should beleeve on him which should come after him that is on Christ Jesus 5 When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them the holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied 7 And all the men were about twelve 8 And he went into the synagogue and spake boldly for the space of three moneths disputing and perswading the things concerning the kingdom of God 9 But when divers were hardned and beleeved not but spake evil of that way before the multitude he departed from them and separated the disciples disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus 10 And this continued by the space of two years so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus both Jews and Greeks 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons and the diseases departed from them and the evil spirits went out of them 13 ¶ Then certain of the vagabond Jews exorcists took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus saying We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva a Jew and chief of the priests which did so 15 And the evil spirit answered and said Jesus I know and Paul I know but who are ye 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leapt on them and overcame them and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus and fear fell on them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified 18 And many that beleeved came confessed shewed their deeds 19 Many also of them which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them before all men and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed 21 After these things were ended Paul purposed in the spirit when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia to go to Jerusalem saying After I have been there I must also see Rome 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministred unto him Timotheus and Erastus but he himself stayed in Asia for a season 23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way 24 For a certain man named Demetrius a silver-smith which made silver shrines for Diana brought no small gain unto the craftsmen 25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation and said Sirs ye know that by this craft we have our wealth 26 Moreover ye see and hear that not alone at Ephesus but almost throughout all Asia this Paul hath perswaded and turned away much people saying that they be no gods which are made with hands 27 So that not onely this our craft is in danger to be set at nought but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised and her magnificence should be destroyed whom all Asia and the world worshippeth 28 And when they heard these sayings they were full of wrath and cryed out saying Great is Diana of the Ephesians 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus men of Macedonia Pauls companions in travel they rushed with one accord into the theatre 30 And when Paul would have entred in unto the people the disciples suffered him not 31 And certain of the chief of Asia which were his friends sent unto him desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre 32 Some therefore cried one thing and some other for the assembly was confused and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude the Jews putting him forward And Alexander beckned with the hand and would have made his defence unto the people 34 But when they knew that he was a Jew all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out Great is Diana of the Ephesians 35 And when the town-clerk had appeased the people he said Ye men of Ephesus what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is † Gr. the templekeeper a worshipper of the great goddess Diana and of the image which fell down from Jupiter 36 Seeing then that these things cannot bespoken against ye ought to be quiet and to do nothing rashly 37 For ye have brought hither these men which are neither robbers of churches nor yet blasphemers of your goddess 38 Wherefore if Demetrius and the craftsmen which are with him have a matter against any man ‖ Or t●●●urt-days are kept the law is open and there are deputies let them implead one another 39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters it shall be determined in a ‖ Or ordinary lawful assembly 40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this days uproar there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse 41 And when he had thus spoken he dismissed the assembly CHAP. justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. The just shall live by faith 12 And the law is not of faith but * Lev. 18.5 the man that doeth them shall live in them 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written * Deu. 21.23 Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith 15 Brethren I speak after the manner of men Though it be but a mans ‖ Or testament covenant yet if it be confirmed no man disanulleth or addeth thereto 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made He saith not And to seeds as of many but as of one And to thy seed which is Christ 17 And this I say that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disanul that it should make the promise of none effect 18 For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise but God gave it to Abraham by promise 19 Wherefore then serveth the law It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediatour 20 Now a mediatour is not a mediatour of one but God is one 21 Is the law then against the promises of God God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life verily righteousness should have been by the law 22 But the scripture hath concluded * Rom. 3.9 all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that beleeve 23 But before faith came we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed 24 Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a school-master 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus 27 For * Rom. 6. ● as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus 29 And if ye be Christs then are ye Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise CHAP. IV. 1 We were under the law till Christ came as the heir is under his guardian till he be of are 5 But Christ freed us from the law 7 therefore we are servants no longer to it 14 He remembreth their good will to him and his to them 22 and sheweth that we are the sons of Abraham by the free-woman NOw I say that the heir as long as he is a childe differeth nothing from a servant though he be lord of all 2 But is under tutours and governours until the time appointed of the father 3 Even so we when we were children were in bondage under the ‖ Or rudiments elements of the world 4 But when the fulness of the time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law 5 To redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons 6 And because ye are sons God hath sent forth * Rom. 8.15 the Spirit of his Son into your hearts crying Abba Father 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant but a son and if a son then an heir of God through Christ 8 Howbeit then when ye knew not God ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods 9 But now after that ye have known God or rather are known of God how turn ye ‖ Or back again to the weak and beggerly ‖ Or rudiments elements whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage 10 Ye observe days and moneths and times and years 11 I am afraid of you lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain 12 Brethren I beseech you be as I am for I am as ye are ye have not injured me at all 13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first 14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not nor rejected but received me as an angel of God even as Christ Jesus 15 ‖ Or What was thou Where is then the blessedness you spake of for I bear you record that if it had been
of the angels said he at any time * Psal 110.1 Matth. 22 44. Sit on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool 14 Are they not all ministring spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation CHAP. II. 1 We ought to be obedient to Christ Jesus 5 and that because he vouchsafed to take our nature upon him 14 as it was necessary THerefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard lest at any time we should † Gr. run out as seeking vessels let them slip 2 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward 3 How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him 4 God also bearing them witness both with signs and wonders and with d●vers miracles and ‖ Or distribution gifts of the holy Ghost according to his own will 5 For unto the angles hath he not put in subjection the world to come whereof we speak 6 But one in a certain place testified saying * Psal 8.4 What is man that thou art mindful of him or the son of man that thou visitest him 7 Thou madest him ‖ Or a little while inferiour to a little lower then the angels thou crownedst him with glory honour didst set him over the works of thy hands 8 * 1 Cor. 15.27 Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet For in that he put all in subjection under him he left nothing that is not put under him But now we see not yet all things put under him 9 But we see Jesus who was made a little lower then the angels ‖ Or by for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man 10 For it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things in bringing many sons unto glory to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings 11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren 12 Saying * Psal 22.22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee 13 And again * Psal 18.2 I will put my trust in him And again * Isa 8.18 Behold I and the children which God hath given me 14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and bloud he also himself likewise took part of the same that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death that is the devil 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their life-time subject to bondage 16 For verily † Gr. he taketh not hold of angels but of the seed of Abraham he taketh hold he took not on him the nature of angels but he took on him the seed of Abraham 17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people 18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted he is able to succour them that are tempted CHAP. III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that † Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath † Gr. If they shall enter They shall not enter into my rest 12 Take heed brethren lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God 13 But exhort one another daily while it is called To day lest any of you be hardned through the deceitfulness of sin 14 For we are made partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence sted fast unto the end 15 While it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts as in the provocation 16 For some when they had heard did provoke howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses 17 But with whom was he grieved fourty years was it not with them that had sinned * Num. 14.29 c. whose carcases fell in the wilderness 18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that beleeved not 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but † Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. And God did rest the seventh day from all his works 5 And in this place again If they shall enter into my rest 6
