uncontrollable_a instance_n as_o also_o in_o the_o guidance_n deliverance_n and_o protection_n of_o his_o church_n he_o manifest_v that_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o he_o be_v alive_a and_o have_v the_o key_n of_o hell_n and_o death_n but_o yet_o because_o he_o be_v on_o the_o one_o hand_n please_v to_o exercise_v great_a patience_n towards_o many_o of_o his_o open_a stubborn_a adversary_n yea_o the_o great_a of_o they_o suffer_v they_o to_o walk_v and_o prosper_v in_o their_o own_o way_n and_o to_o leave_v his_o church_n unto_o various_a trial_n and_o distress_n his_o power_n be_v much_o hide_v from_o the_o world_n at_o present_a in_o these_o dispensation_n 3_o the_o three_o evidence_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o administration_n of_o his_o mediatory_a kingdom_n consist_v in_o his_o dispensation_n of_o these_o spiritual_a gift_n which_o be_v proper_o the_o power_n of_o the_o new_a world_n for_o such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o they_o and_o their_o use_n such_o or_o their_o own_o private_a exercise_n if_o that_o be_v utter_o neglect_v to_o what_o end_n shall_v they_o be_v leave_v unto_o rust_n and_o uselessness_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o any_o according_o we_o find_v it_o to_o come_v to_o pass_v some_o neglect_v they_o some_o reject_v they_o and_o from_o both_o sort_n they_o be_v judicial_o take_v away_o such_o we_o have_v among_o we_o some_o there_o be_v who_o have_v receive_v considerable_a spiritual_a ability_n for_o evangelical_n administration_n but_o after_o a_o while_o they_o have_v fall_v into_o a_o outward_a state_n of_o thing_n wherein_o as_o they_o suppose_v they_o shall_v have_v no_o advantage_n by_o they_o yea_o that_o their_o exercise_n will_v turn_v to_o their_o disadvantage_n and_o thereon_o do_v whole_o neglect_v they_o by_o this_o mean_n they_o have_v insensible_o decay_v until_o they_o become_v as_o devoid_a of_o spiritual_a ability_n as_o if_o they_o never_o have_v experience_n of_o any_o assistance_n in_o that_o kind_n they_o can_v no_o more_o either_o pray_v or_o speak_v or_o evidence_n the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o any_o thing_n unto_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n their_o arm_n be_v dry_v
wary_a or_o less_o able_a on_o any_o account_n to_o make_v a_o right_a judgement_n between_o those_o who_o be_v real_o endow_v with_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o those_o who_o false_o pretend_v thereunto_o for_o these_o person_n receive_v this_o gift_n and_o be_v place_v in_o the_o church_n for_o this_o very_a end_n that_o they_o may_v guide_v and_o help_v they_o in_o make_v a_o right_a judgement_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o whereas_o the_o communication_n of_o these_o gift_n be_v cease_v and_o consequent_o all_o pretence_n unto_o they_o unless_o by_o some_o person_n phrenetical_a and_o enthusiastical_a who_o madness_n be_v manifest_a to_o all_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o this_o gift_n of_o discern_v of_o spirit_n that_o stand_v infallible_a rule_n of_o the_o word_n and_o ordinary_a assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v every_o way_n sufficient_a for_o our_o preservation_n in_o the_o truth_n unless_o we_o give_v up_o ourselves_o to_o the_o conduct_n of_o corrupt_a lust_n pride_n self-conceit_n carnal_a interest_n passion_n and_o temptation_n which_o ruin_n the_o soul_n of_o men._n §_o 22._o the_o two_o spiritual_a yet_o be_v this_o gift_n of_o tongue_n signalise_v by_o the_o visible_a pledge_n of_o it_o the_o joint_a participation_n of_o the_o same_o gift_n by_o all_o and_o the_o notoriety_n of_o the_o matter_n thereon_o as_o in_o that_o place_n of_o the_o act_n be_v at_o large_a describe_v and_o god_n seem_v to_o have_v lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o preach_v the_o gospel_n in_o this_o gift_n for_o two_o reason_n 1_o to_o signify_v that_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v now_o no_o long_o to_o be_v confine_v unto_o one_o nation_n language_n or_o people_n but_o to_o be_v extend_v unto_o all_o nation_n tongue_n and_o language_n of_o people_n under_o heaven_n 2_o to_o testify_v by_o what_o mean_v he_o will_v subdue_v the_o soul_n and_o conscience_n of_o man_n unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n and_o by_o what_o mean_v he_o will_v maintain_v his_o kingdom_n in_o the_o world_n now_o this_o be_v not_o by_o force_n and_o may_v by_o external_a power_n or_o army_n but_o by_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o word_n whereof_o the_o tongue_n be_v the_o only_a instrument_n and_o the_o outward_a sign_n of_o this_o gift_n in_o tongue_n of_o fire_n evidence_v the_o light_n and_o efficacy_n wherewith_o the_o holy_a ghost_n design_v to_o accompany_v the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o gospel_n wherefore_o although_o this_o gift_n begin_v with_o the_o apostle_n yet_o be_v it_o afterward_o very_o much_o diffuse_v unto_o the_o generality_n of_o they_o that_o do_v believe_v see_v act_n 10._o 46._o chap._n 19_o 6._o 1_o cor._n 14._o and_o some_o few_o forth_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n to_o the_o admiration_n and_o astonishment_n of_o they_o who_o be_v yet_o stranger_n to_o the_o faith_n so_o when_o they_o first_o receive_v the_o gift_n they_o be_v hear_v speak_v the_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n act_v 2._o 11._o and_o the_o gentile_n who_o first_o believe_v speak_v with_o tongue_n and_o magnify_v god_n act_v 10._o 46._o 2_o these_o tongue_n be_v so_o give_v for_o a_o sign_n unto_o they_o that_o believe_v not_o 1_o cor._n 14._o 22._o that_o sometime_o those_o that_o speak_v with_o tongue_n understand_v not_o the_o sense_n and_o mean_v of_o the_o word_n deliver_v by_o themselves_o nor_o be_v they_o understand_v by_o the_o church_n itself_o wherein_o they_o be_v utter_v 1_o cor._n 14._o 6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o 10._o etc._n etc._n but_o this_o i_o suppose_v be_v only_o sometime_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v most_o when_o this_o gift_n be_v unnecessary_o use_v for_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o apostle_n understand_v full_a well_o the_o thing_n deliver_v by_o themselves_o in_o divers_a tongue_n and_o all_o who_o have_v this_o gift_n though_o they_o may_v not_o apprehend_v the_o meaning_n of_o what_o themselves_o speak_v and_o utter_v yet_o be_v so_o absolute_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o it_o under_o the_o conduct_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n that_o they_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v speak_v any_o thing_n by_o virtue_n thereof_o but_o what_o be_v according_a unto_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n and_o tend_v unto_o his_o praise_n 1_o cor._n 14._o 2._o 14_o 17._o 3_o although_o this_o gift_n be_v excellent_a in_o itself_o and_o singular_o effectual_a in_o the_o propagation_n of_o the_o gospel_n unto_o unbeliever_n yet_o in_o the_o assembly_n of_o the_o church_n it_o be_v of_o little_a or_o no_o use_n but_o only_o with_o respect_n unto_o the_o thing_n themselves_o that_o be_v utter_v for_o as_o to_o the_o principal_a end_n of_o it_o to_o be_v a_o sign_n unto_o unbeliever_n it_o be_v finish_v and_o accomplish_v towards_o they_o so_o as_o they_o have_v no_o far_a need_n nor_o use_v of_o it_o but_o now_o whereas_o many_o unbeliever_n come_v occasional_o into_o the_o assembly_n of_o the_o church_n especial_o at_o some_o free_a season_n for_o who_o conviction_n the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v for_o a_o season_n continue_v this_o gift_n among_o believer_n that_o the_o church_n may_v not_o be_v disadvantage_v thereby_o he_o add_v the_o other_o gift_n here_o mention_v namely_o the_o interpretation_n of_o tongue_n he_o endow_v either_o those_o person_n themselves_o who_o speak_v with_o tongue_n or_o some_o other_o in_o the_o same_o assembly_n with_o a_o ability_n to_o interpret_v and_o declare_v to_o the_o church_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v speak_v and_o utter_v in_o that_o miraculous_a manner_n which_o be_v the_o last_o gift_n here_o mention_v but_o the_o nature_n use_v and_o abuse_v of_o these_o gift_n be_v so_o large_o and_o distinct_o speak_v unto_o by_o the_o apostle_n 1_o cor._n 14._o that_o as_o i_o need_v not_o insist_v on_o they_o so_o i_o can_v full_o do_v it_o without_o a_o entire_a exposition_n of_o that_o whole_a chapter_n which_o the_o nature_n of_o my_o design_n will_v not_o permit_v chap._n v._o the_o original_a duration_n use_v and_o end_v of_o extraordinary_a spiritual_a gift_n §_o 1._o this_o summary_n account_n do_v the_o apostle_n give_v of_o these_o extraordinary_a
