be_v a_o good_a of_o a_o particular_a season_n the_o work_n and_o business_n of_o our_o day_n relate_v to_o the_o particular_a circumstance_n and_o dispensation_n of_o providence_n under_o which_o it_o please_v god_n to_o bring_v we_o have_v thus_o far_o discourse_v of_o good_a and_o distinguish_v of_o that_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o understand_v what_o evil_a be_v it_o be_v either_o the_o omission_n of_o some_o of_o these_o duty_n or_o the_o commission_n or_o do_v some_o thing_n which_o be_v opposite_a to_o they_o i_o take_v the_o precept_n of_o the_o text_n in_o the_o large_a sense_n suffer_v violence_n and_o the_o violent_a take_v it_o by_o force_n man_n be_v compel_v to_o come_v in_o this_o difference_n in_o the_o external_a ministration_n which_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o have_v no_o small_a influence_n upon_o the_o eternal_a concern_v and_o interest_n of_o man_n for_o god_n do_v not_o ordinary_o work_v by_o way_n of_o miracle_n and_o heal_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o blind_a with_o clay_n and_o spital_n be_v fountain_v only_o in_o the_o freewill_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n use_v 2._o but_o i_o trust_v i_o speak_v to_o some_o who_o have_v taste_v further_o of_o the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n than_o receive_v the_o general_a dispensation_n of_o the_o gospel_n with_o their_o outward_a ear_n god_n have_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n upon_o the_o preach_n of_o over_o and_o show_v mercy_n to_o i_o certain_o no_o soul_n can_v serious_o think_v of_o these_o thing_n but_o must_v be_v ravish_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o inaccountable_a love_n of_o god_n in_o these_o thing_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o render_v unto_o thou_o o_o lard_n what_o shall_v i_o render_v unto_o thou_o 2._o this_o notion_n of_o god_n sovereignty_n freedom_n and_o inaccountbleness_n in_o the_o dispensation_n of_o his_o grace_n shall_v teach_v every_o soul_n that_o have_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o it_o the_o great_a lesson_n of_o most_o furious_a persecutor_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o worth_n any_o goodness_n or_o holiness_n which_o the_o lord_n see_v in_o thou_o but_o of_o his_o mere_a free_a will_n and_o grace_n god_n have_v show_v mercy_n to_o thy_o soul_n what_o have_v thou_o now_o of_o thy_o own_o to_o boast_v or_o glory_n in_o thou_o have_v indeed_o reason_n to_o glory_n and_o to_o make_v thy_o boast_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o bless_v god_n for_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o thy_o soul_n more_o than_o for_o a_o thousand_o other_o but_o there_o be_v no_o thanks_o to_o thou_o his_o will_n his_o own_o will_n be_v the_o fountain_n of_o his_o grace_n extend_v to_o thou_o god_n have_v have_v mercy_n upon_o thy_o soul_n only_o because_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n o_o therefore_o be_v not_o high-minded_a but_o fear_v and_o walk_v humble_o before_o god_n 3._o last_o this_o call_v upon_o all_o of_o you_o who_o have_v taste_v of_o this_o free_a and_o unaccountable_a grace_n to_o live_v a_o power_n in_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o will_n in_o the_o rectitude_n of_o his_o own_o nature_n to_o have_v make_v use_n of_o and_o apply_v the_o revelation_n he_o have_v of_o the_o divine_a will_n in_o order_n to_o his_o salvation_n and_o so_o all_o mankind_n have_v in_o he_o for_o as_o in_o adam_n all_o die_v so_o in_o adam_n all_o man_n be_v at_o first_o a_o live_v or_o they_o can_v not_o in_o the_o fall_n have_v die_v in_o he_o the_o question_n be_v not_o therefore_o of_o man_n as_o he_o at_o first_o come_v out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n but_o of_o mankind_n in_o their_o lapse_v estate_n whether_o they_o have_v all_o such_o a_o sufficiency_n 2._o second_o neither_o be_v the_o question_n about_o the_o sufficiency_n of_o external_a mean_n as_o to_o all_o those_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v and_o who_o have_v the_o scripture_n we_o grant_v a_o perfection_n in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o make_v man_n wise_a unto_o salvation_n the_o word_n of_o faith_n be_v a_o sufficient_a external_a mean_n this_o be_v again_o on_o all_o hand_n agree_v betwixt_o we_o 3._o three_o it_o be_v out_o of_o doubt_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o revelation_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o glory_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o great_a end_n which_o god_n aim_v at_o in_o all_o his_o dispensation_n of_o providence_n 4._o yea_o and_o four_o there_o be_v such_o a_o sufficiency_n of_o outward_a mean_n as_o be_v enough_o to_o keep_v up_o external_a order_n and_o discipline_n give_v to_o many_o that_o live_v in_o the_o world_n even_o to_o as_o many_o as_o god_n have_v fore-ordained_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o still_o there_o be_v two_o question_n behind_o 1._o whether_o those_o who_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v never_o preach_v have_v a_o sufficient_a external_a mean_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n 2._o whether_o either_o those_o or_o any_o of_o those_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v have_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n unless_o god_n be_v please_v to_o influence_n their_o soul_n by_o the_o powerful_a operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o their_o heart_n overpower_v their_o will_n and_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o power_n make_v they_o willing_a to_o receive_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n free_o tender_v in_o the_o gospel_n we_o do_v judge_n that_o as_o the_o heathen_n who_o have_v not_o hear_v of_o christ_n nor_o have_v the_o gospel_n preach_v unto_o they_o have_v not_o a_o sufficiency_n in_o respect_n of_o outward_a ordinary_a mean_n so_o neither_o those_o who_o have_v the_o scripture_n and_o ordinance_n of_o god_n have_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o grace_n while_o they_o want_v the_o internal_a effectual_a operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o that_o indeed_o no_o reprobate_n only_o the_o elect_n of_o god_n have_v a_o sufficient_a aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o grace_n give_v they_o for_o their_o salvation_n though_o in_o the_o way_n of_o outward_a mean_n those_o indeed_o who_o have_v the_o gospel_n publish_v to_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v a_o sufficiency_n in_o respect_n of_o external_a mean_n this_o we_o affirm_v upon_o these_o ground_n 1._o this_o pretend_a sufficiency_n must_v be_v either_o of_o external_n mean_n or_o be_v there_o discourse_v of_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n you_o see_v that_o be_v fix_v in_o the_o word_n for_o that_o be_v that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v hear_v and_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o word_n so_o that_o what_o secret_a way_n soever_o god_n may_v have_v to_o reveal_v himself_o and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n unto_o some_o particular_a person_n in_o place_n where_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o find_v nor_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n hear_v of_o nor_o his_o gospel_n preach_v yet_o certain_a it_o be_v the_o outward_a and_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n be_v the_o preach_a hear_v and_o read_v of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n the_o scripture_n be_v not_o find_v read_v preach_v they_o have_v no_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o absurd_a to_o say_v that_o as_o to_o the_o external_n ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n there_o be_v a_o sufficiency_n afford_v all_o for_o if_o the_o word_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o it_o be_v the_o outward_a and_o ordinary_a mean_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o demonstration_n that_o a_o very_a great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n have_v nothing_o of_o it_o those_o therefore_o that_o will_v maintain_v a_o sufficiency_n of_o mean_n must_v make_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o the_o view_n of_o they_o and_o conclusion_n which_o man_n may_v make_v by_o their_o natural_a light_n and_o reason_n from_o they_o a_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o give_v a_o man_n the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o such_o a_o knowledge_n
