desire_n and_o let_v we_o turn_v the_o currant_n contrary_a that_o so_o we_o may_v wade_v safe_o and_o enjoy_v our_o endeavour_n unhappy_a they_o that_o so_o desire_v as_o that_o they_o can_v be_v soon_o weary_v then_o satisfy_v with_o their_o labour_n miserable_a man_n that_o seek_v for_o happiness_n in_o sinful_a vanity_n and_o changeablenesse_n and_o can_v find_v this_o their_o only_a content_n to_o be_v restless_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o what_o they_o can_v compass_v or_o what_o they_o compass_n increase_v their_o misery_n most_o desperate_a their_o estate_n that_o have_v no_o hope_n but_o in_o this_o life_n wherein_o notwithstanding_o they_o be_v just_o deceive_v and_o confound_v oh_o then_o happy_a they_o that_o have_v the_o god_n of_o god_n for_o their_o refuge_n who_o sweeten_v unto_o they_o all_o their_o bitter_a pill_n and_o hereby_o prevent_v surfait_v of_o worldly_a excess_n happy_a they_o that_o have_v their_o affection_n set_v upon_o heavenly_a thing_n which_o can_v neither_o be_v take_v from_o they_o though_o they_o be_v from_o they_o and_o so_o be_v from_o they_o do_v increase_v their_o spiritual_a appetite_n that_o so_o they_o may_v never_o cease_v longing_n till_o they_o be_v satisfy_v with_o he_o oh_o happy_a be_v they_o that_o can_v be_v content_v with_o their_o estate_n because_o what_o the_o lord_n dispose_v be_v best_a and_o fit_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o by_o faith_n can_v still_o be_v restless_a after_o what_o be_v promise_v that_o so_o god_n may_v fulfil_v the_o desire_n of_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o yea_o they_o be_v happy_a and_o ever_o more_o bless_v be_v they_o that_o use_v the_o world_n as_o stranger_n and_o as_o stranger_n be_v entertain_v thereof_o that_o so_o they_o may_v approve_v themselves_o to_o belong_v to_o another_o country_n and_o may_v hasten_v to_o that_o country_n and_o city_n which_o be_v above_o this_o happiness_n of_o the_o way_n he_o which_o be_v the_o way_n grant_v unto_o we_o even_o for_o his_o truth_n sake_n that_o so_o by_o he_o we_o may_v be_v conduct_v to_o the_o happiness_n of_o our_o country_n to_o who_o with_o god_n the_o father_n and_o the_o bless_a spirit_n three_o glorious_a person_n and_o one_o god_n in_o unity_n might_n and_o majesty_n be_v ascribe_v of_o we_o and_o all_o saint_n as_o it_o be_v most_o due_a all_o glory_n power_n dominion_n and_o thanksgiving_n with_o all_o fear_n and_o obedience_n both_o now_o and_o for_o ever_o amen_n conclusion_n to_o the_o reader_n resolve_v certain_a case_n of_o conscience_n iâ—oident_a hereunto_o thus_o have_v thou_o gentle_a reader_n a_o brief_a of_o such_o meditation_n which_o by_o observation_n of_o worldly_a course_n i_o have_v conceive_v concern_v the_o desperate_a estate_n of_o worldling_n endanger_v their_o soul_n for_o the_o gain_v of_o worldly_a commodity_n and_o for_o thy_o further_a satisfaction_n herein_o that_o thou_o may_v prevent_v deceit_n in_o thy_o christian_a liberty_n lest_o it_o be_v a_o occasion_n to_o the_o flesh_n and_o follow_v thy_o earthly_a plough_n so_o that_o the_o better_a plough_n still_o go_v forward_o i_o have_v think_v it_o necessary_a to_o adjoine_v hereunto_o certain_a case_n of_o conscience_n whereby_o thou_o may_v be_v resolve_v in_o such_o difficulty_n and_o seem_a contradiction_n as_o appear_v between_o thy_o general_n and_o civil_a call_n that_o so_o thou_o may_v wise_o subordinate_a the_o one_o unto_o the_o other_o and_o make_v thy_o civil_a call_n a_o furtherance_n to_o the_o perfection_n of_o thy_o general_n to_o this_o end_n seeing_z as_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o sabboath_n be_v a_o special_a trial_n and_o furtherance_n of_o sincerity_n in_o all_o other_o occasion_n so_o the_o main_a quarrel_n of_o worldling_n be_v against_o the_o same_o either_o they_o will_v utter_o abolish_v the_o same_o that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v keep_v at_o all_o or_o else_o they_o will_v delude_v and_o frustrate_v the_o power_n thereof_o under_o pretence_n of_o christian_a liberty_n therefore_o the_o first_o quaere_fw-la quaere_fw-la shall_v be_v concern_v the_o liberty_n which_o the_o sabboath_n allow_v what_o use_v of_o our_o civil_a calling_n and_o other_o accedent_n thereto_o may_v be_v allow_v upon_o the_o lord_n day_n to_o which_o we_o answer_v brief_o that_o such_o liberty_n hereto_o be_v only_o allow_v herein_o as_o the_o word_n and_o equity_n thereof_o do_v confine_v unto_o us._n namely_o 1._o that_o in_o case_n of_o necessity_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o life_n so_o that_o without_o present_a help_n it_o may_v be_v certain_o endanger_v we_o may_v lawful_o exercise_v our_o civil_a calling_n but_o neither_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o at_o other_o time_n or_o to_o the_o same_o end_n first_o i_o say_v not_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n that_o be_v not_o with_o the_o same_o intention_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o on_o this_o day_n must_v be_v more_o abstract_v from_o earthly_a affection_n than_o another_o day_n not_o so_o much_o our_o love_n to_o the_o person_n as_o our_o love_n unto_o god_n must_v now_o bear_v sway_n in_o do_v the_o thing_n with_o a_o entire_a respect_n to_o god_n command_v the_o same_o that_o he_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o our_o simple_a obedience_n they_o that_o man_n may_v receive_v benefit_n thereby_o which_o though_o i_o acknowledge_v be_v to_o guide_v we_o at_o all_o time_n yet_o special_o the_o saboth_n require_v this_o retire_a obedience_n and_o in_o our_o relieve_v the_o person_n though_o his_o body_n or_o state_n be_v in_o present_a danger_n yet_o our_o principal_a aim_n must_v be_v the_o relief_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o exhortation_n reproof_n etc._n etc._n as_o occasion_n serve_v and_o that_o without_o any_o respect_n of_o refresh_v the_o mind_n or_o body_n by_o any_o such_o labour_n which_o be_v lawful_a at_o other_o time_n thus_o be_v the_o different_a manner_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o so_o also_o there_o must_v be_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o body_n as_o so_o to_o exercise_v the_o body_n as_o special_o to_o humble_a and_o abase_v it_o by_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o labour_n whereas_o at_o other_o time_n we_o may_v more_o respect_v the_o ease_n thereof_o and_o yet_o so_o far_o only_o to_o exercise_v it_o as_o not_o to_o tire_v &_o weary_v it_o if_o urgent_a occasion_n donot_v require_v lest_o wearisomenesse_n require_v some_o such_o recreation_n thereof_o as_o be_v not_o meet_v and_o if_o any_o urgent_a occasion_n may_v bring_v wearisomenes_n yet_o now_o instead_o of_o such_o bodily_a recreation_n the_o mind_n may_v be_v enlarge_v to_o heavenly_a meditation_n and_o thanksgiving_n thereby_o to_o refresh_v the_o weary_a carcase_n whence_o it_o follow_v that_o all_o bodily_a recreation_n that_o do_v not_o further_o we_o to_o divine_a worship_n be_v unlawful_a on_o the_o lord_n day_n because_o they_o serve_v only_o to_o refresh_v the_o body_n after_o labour_n which_o be_v restrain_v therefrom_o otherwise_o i_o say_v them_z they_o shall_v make_v we_o fit_a to_o serve_v god_n when_o we_o have_v any_o liberty_n to_o labour_n upon_o case_n of_o necessity_n though_o we_o may_v use_v that_o liberty_n to_o wearisomnes_n yet_o this_o be_v to_o be_v relieve_v special_o with_o spiritual_a recreation_n 2_o this_o infer_v that_o the_o use_n of_o our_o civil_a calling_n on_o this_o day_n be_v not_o as_o they_o be_v civil_a but_o rather_o as_o they_o be_v abstract_v from_o all_o civil_a respect_n and_o this_o shall_v appear_v the_o better_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o different_a end_n

pretence_n of_o our_o calling_n some_o whereof_o be_v such_o as_o can_v be_v manage_v without_o abundance_n and_o herein_o the_o delusion_n be_v more_o forcible_a for_o the_o enthral_n of_o the_o soul_n both_o in_o that_o abundance_n be_v a_o inseparable_a companion_n to_o greatness_n do_v hereby_o puff_n up_o the_o heart_n and_o so_o exalt_v it_o against_o the_o lord_n calling_n as_o if_o this_o great_a babel_n be_v attain_v by_o our_o own_o wit_n and_o industry_n but_o usual_o that_o we_o come_v to_o that_o fullness_n without_o our_o own_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n hereupon_o we_o grow_v careless_a in_o the_o use_n of_o what_o we_o come_v so_o light_o by_o and_o either_o upon_o vain_a pretence_n of_o munificence_n we_o lavish_a out_o on_o such_o as_o we_o purpose_v to_o honour_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v as_o god_n in_o bestow_v where_o we_o will_v or_o we_o supply_v prodigality_n by_o oppression_n of_o other_o and_o so_o affect_v a_o kind_n of_o deity_n in_o take_v from_o who_o we_o list_v and_o so_o on_o either_o side_n do_v willing_o endanger_v our_o precious_a soul_n either_o by_o put_v confidence_n in_o that_o which_o daily_o we_o confound_v in_o our_o abuse_n or_o else_o by_o abuse_v the_o trust_n that_o be_v commit_v unto_o we_o as_o be_v but_o steward_n for_o other_o and_o servant_n to_o the_o common_a good_a behold_v here_o then_o the_o delusion_n in_o high_a calling_n and_o learn_v we_o thus_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n to_o avoid_v the_o snare_n thereof_o consider_v we_o that_o high_a calling_n evil_n though_o they_o require_v necessary_a supply_n of_o abundance_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o for_o their_o own_o as_o the_o public_a good_a so_o to_o keep_v their_o own_o estate_n therewith_o as_o that_o withal_o they_o remember_v that_o they_o be_v subordinate_a to_o the_o high_a who_o as_o he_o give_v they_o these_o thing_n so_o he_o will_v require_v a_o account_n of_o they_o and_o second_o that_o they_o be_v also_o herein_o but_o servant_n to_o the_o public_a so_o to_o carry_v their_o state_n as_o the_o commonwealth_n may_v thereby_o flourish_v and_o therefore_o they_o must_v ever_o bare_a of_o their_o fullness_n to_o comfort_v the_o empty_a soul_n as_o good_a nehemias_n do_v not_o take_v their_o set_a allowance_n of_o the_o governor_n 13._o for_o the_o relief_n of_o the_o distress_a and_o in_o this_o most_o absolute_a liberty_n they_o must_v be_v confine_v within_o the_o bound_n of_o best_a deserve_v for_o the_o cast_n of_o courtesy_n upon_o a_o person_n that_o be_v otherwise_o meritorious_a be_v as_o seed_v that_o be_v cast_v into_o good_a ground_n which_o common_o yield_v return_v with_o much_o comfort_n so_o that_o our_o care_n and_o pain_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v cast_v away_o as_o that_o we_o rejoice_v therein_o especial_o be_v they_o careful_a to_o honour_n god_n with_o their_o fullness_n in_o empty_v of_o themselves_o for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n and_o common_a benefit_n that_o so_o they_o may_v give_v up_o their_o account_n with_o joy_n this_o concern_v high_a calling_n as_o for_o the_o other_o ordinary_a and_o inferior_a condition_n though_o each_o through_o pride_n and_o discontent_n be_v aim_v at_o the_o high_a yet_o let_v he_o here_o observe_v the_o rule_n before_o set_v down_o and_o so_o shall_v he_o avoid_v the_o snare_n which_o lie_v therein_o and_o thus_o of_o the_o second_o colour_n draw_v on_o to_o this_o bargain_n a_o three_o colour_n there_o yet_o remain_v hereto_o good_a namely_o the_o conceit_n of_o do_v the_o most_o good_a which_o see_v we_o then_o can_v lest_o do_v when_o we_o have_v most_o therefore_o each_o desire_v abundance_n upon_o pretence_n hereof_o and_o so_o either_o upon_o pretence_n of_o do_v good_a swallow_v up_o many_o evil_n in_o the_o gain_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o so_o commit_v evil_a that_o good_a may_v come_v thereof_o herein_o who_o damnation_n be_v just_a or_o else_o which_o be_v worse_o and_o yet_o a_o common_a case_n though_o he_o have_v get_v much_o wicked_o yet_o by_o do_v of_o good_a therewith_o decipher_v he_o hope_v to_o make_v amends_o and_o so_o be_v just_o meet_v withal_o by_o divine_a vengeance_n either_o he_o be_v take_v away_o in_o his_o evil_a get_n and_o so_o deprive_v of_o his_o hope_n of_o do_v good_a or_o make_v amends_o thereby_o or_o else_o if_o he_o be_v spare_v to_o try_v his_o charity_n be_v it_o usual_o any_o other_o then_o either_o to_o give_v somewhat_o at_o his_o death_n when_o he_o can_v keep_v his_o mammon_n no_o long_o and_o so_o it_o be_v not_o thanks-worthy_a or_o if_o any_o come_v from_o he_o while_o he_o live_v what_o be_v it_o else_o but_o either_o to_o grease_v a_o fat_a sow_n and_o cast_v water_n into_o the_o sea_n or_o else_o he_o part_v with_o a_o godgin_n to_o catch_v a_o pike_n his_o table_n be_v a_o snare_n and_o his_o wealth_n a_o net_n to_o make_v he_o friend_n therewith_o or_o bridle_v his_o enemy_n either_o he_o must_v have_v a_o trumpet_n to_o bring_v he_o in_o present_a reward_n and_o deprive_v he_o of_o the_o future_a or_o he_o give_v with_o one_o hand_n and_o kill_v with_o the_o other_o the_o body_n must_v be_v relieve_v to_o enthrall_v the_o soul_n or_o the_o soul_n be_v neglect_v so_o the_o poor_a carcase_n may_v be_v refresh_v and_o that_o rather_o spare_o to_o kill_v it_o often_o with_o a_o linger_a consumption_n or_o glut_v once_o a_o year_n to_o fat_v it_o up_o to_o the_o slaughter_n behold_v the_o ordinary_a charity_n of_o worldling_n and_o judge_v whether_o they_o prove_v good_a to_o themselves_o or_o other_o hereof_o learn_v we_o therefore_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n thus_o to_o prevent_v this_o delusion_n as_o first_o by_o consider_v that_o as_o the_o holy_a god_n have_v appoint_v lawful_a mean_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o his_o own_o blessing_n thereof_o so_o that_o we_o may_v not_o do_v evil_a that_o good_a may_v come_v thereof_o so_o he_o require_v no_o more_o of_o we_o then_o according_o as_o he_o give_v the_o widow_n mite_n be_v accept_v when_o we_o have_v no_o more_o and_o the_o pound_n of_o the_o vain_a glorious_a be_v reject_v where_o less_o will_v serve_v the_o turn_n neither_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o body_n will_v procure_v any_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o to_o do_v righteous_o and_o walk_v with_o god_n this_o be_v acceptable_a with_o he_o 8._o no_o other_o sacrifice_n of_o distribute_v to_o other_o mark_v be_v so_o please_v unto_o god_n but_o what_o be_v especial_o to_o the_o household_n of_o faith_n what_o may_v further_o our_o own_o and_o other_o salvation_n above_o all_o know_v we_o that_o god_n love_v a_o cheerful_a giver_n and_o therefore_o while_o we_o live_v and_o have_v time_n let_v we_o be_v do_v of_o good_a lest_o to_o morrow_n be_v too_o late_o and_o let_v we_o send_v our_o good_n before_o we_o to_o make_v we_o friend_n of_o they_o not_o leave_v they_o behind_o we_o lest_o we_o lose_v the_o comfort_n of_o they_o and_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v let_v we_o aim_v at_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o do_v it_o for_o his_o sake_n who_o think_v not_o his_o life_n to_o be_v dear_a for_o we_o that_o so_o cast_v our_o bread_n upon_o the_o water_n we_o may_v find_v it_o again_o and_o thus_o of_o these_o delusion_n which_o draw_v man_n to_o this_o bargain_n there_o follow_v another_o sort_n of_o deceit_n bargain_n which_o give_v we_o hope_v that_o though_o we_o have_v venture_v on_o the_o bargain_n yet_o we_o may_v be_v free_a again_o of_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v fit_a occasion_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o last_o place_n and_o so_o we_o come_v to_o the_o last_o place_n of_o observation_n namely_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o bargain_n which_o if_o our_o savour_n may_v be_v judge_n will_v profit_v we_o nothing_o for_o so_o his_o word_n imply_v what_o shall_v it_o profit_v a_o man_n profit_n that_o be_v as_o much_o to_o say_v he_o shall_v profit_v nothing_o thereby_o it_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a match_n to_o hazard_v the_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v for_o the_o gain_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n reason_n hereof_o lie_v couch_v in_o the_o word_n themselves_o which_o do_v imply_v two_o
