enter_v into_o himself_o recollect_v himself_o a_o little_a and_o lift_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o god_n he_o direct_v the_o whole_a work_n he_o be_v about_o to_o the_o only_a glory_n of_o god_n beg_v of_o he_o assistance_n that_o he_o will_v establish_v his_o mind_n in_o he_o alone_o second_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o his_o prayer_n it_o be_v good_a that_o first_o he_o pronounce_v all_o the_o word_n distinct_o without_o too_o much_o haste_n second_o that_o by_o some_o paw_n sing_v as_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o psalm_n where_o we_o say_v glory_n be_v the_o father_n etc._n etc._n he_o renew_v his_o attention_n that_o if_o his_o mind_n be_v distract_v he_o may_v gather_v it_o up_o again_o and_o beg_v pardon_n of_o god_n for_o this_o neglect_n three_o the_o prayer_n be_v end_v which_o thou_o hear_v or_o read_v give_v thyself_o to_o understand_v they_o and_o certify_v thyself_o of_o all_o doubt_n twelve_o use_v all_o diligence_n to_o commend_v to_o the_o treasure-house_n the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o thing_n which_o a_o man_n ought_v to_o love_v in_o which_o love_n consist_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o all_o our_o good_a work_n 1_o if_o it_o be_v true_a which_o s._n ambrose_n write_v that_o the_o ignorance_n of_o order_n and_o manner_n whereby_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v do_v do_v much_o trouble_n and_o deface_v the_o quality_n of_o one_o we_o to_o be_v helper_n unto_o god_n then_o to_o move_v the_o soul_n in_o all_o our_o work_n as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v to_o repair_v the_o grievous_a loss_n which_o sin_n have_v bring_v into_o the_o soul_n and_o pure_o to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o beside_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o any_o shall_v excuse_v themselves_o in_o that_o the_o anoint_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v teach_v all_o thing_n and_o so_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o use_n nor_o need_n of_o any_o art_n or_o method_n whereby_o to_o learn_v the_o serve_v of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v true_a but_o yet_o so_o as_o that_o we_o be_v not_o want_v unto_o the_o spirit_n and_o to_o ourselves_o in_o search_v and_o labour_v by_o all_o holy_a mean_n to_o come_v to_o that_o knowledge_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v not_o those_o that_o be_v altogether_o unwilling_a much_o less_o such_o as_o reluct_v and_o strive_v against_o it_o nor_o let_v any_o think_v this_o sweet_a yoke_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v heavy_a in_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n to_o attain_v so_o high_a and_o heavenly_a wisdom_n whereby_o to_o use_v this_o method_n of_o serve_v god_n aright_o for_o if_o usual_o man_n spend_v three_o four_o or_o more_o year_n in_o grammar_n logic_n and_o other_o inferior_a art_n nay_o sometime_o all_o their_o life_n if_o they_o study_v to_o be_v perfect_a in_o it_o how_o much_o better_a shall_v he_o bestow_v his_o whole_a life_n to_o learn_v perfect_o this_o most_o heavenly_a art_n to_o teach_v we_o which_o our_o most_o dear_a and_o heavenly_a master_n jesus_n christ_n come_v down_o from_o heaven_n unto_o we_o and_o with_o so_o much_o labour_n and_o pain_n perform_v it_o therefore_o let_v not_o any_o be_v discourage_v in_o follow_v this_o course_n if_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o many_o disability_n for_o herein_o it_o chance_v to_o he_o as_o to_o a_o infant_n for_o he_o have_v a_o soul_n have_v not_o yet_o the_o use_n of_o reason_n and_o have_v a_o body_n foot_n and_o leg_n yet_o can_v go_v but_o when_o he_o begin_v to_o grow_v and_o to_o move_v the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n he_o can_v go_v yet_o for_o all_o that_o with_o much_o difficulty_n and_o often_o fall_v until_o increase_v in_o year_n and_o by_o continual_a exercise_n he_o go_v so_o free_o that_o when_o he_o list_v he_o can_v run_v the_o same_o thing_n fall_v out_o in_o holy_a exercise_n whilst_o one_o begin_v pure_o to_o serve_v god_n for_o albeit_o the_o soul_n be_v find_v yet_o it_o be_v so_o bind_v and_o burden_v &_o so_o without_o power_n whereby_o to_o move_v itself_o in_o this_o journey_n to_o god_n as_o the_o whole_a scripture_n declare_v that_o we_o can_v walk_v at_o all_o and_o if_o we_o be_v move_v something_o towards_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v with_o such_o difficulty_n faintness_n and_o fall_n as_o that_o our_o walk_n be_v but_o a_o very_a stand_v still_o if_o not_o rather_o a_o very_a go_v backwards_o but_o when_o we_o shall_v have_v practise_v this_o method_n and_o mean_n of_o serve_v god_n for_o some_o short_a time_n we_o shall_v grow_v to_o such_o strength_n therein_o that_o we_o shall_v do_v thing_n which_o before_o we_o dare_v not_o hope_v for_o and_o shall_v so_o run_v through_o these_o high_a and_o heavenly_a journey_n as_o that_o our_o motion_n may_v rather_o be_v call_v the_o motion_n of_o angel_n fly_v then_o of_o man_n walk_v on_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o be_v much_o to_o be_v forewarn_v that_o no_o man_n make_v any_o pretext_n or_o excuse_n of_o serve_v god_n in_o this_o ensue_a manner_n as_o content_v himself_o with_o the_o ordinary_a manner_n of_o serve_v god_n to_o be_v sufficient_a to_o bring_v he_o to_o salvation_n for_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n even_o our_o sanctification_n 4._o 1._o thess_n 4._o and_o not_o our_o sanctification_n for_o some_o short_a time_n or_o in_o some_o one_o part_n of_o body_n or_o soul_n but_o during_o the_o whole_a life_n and_o throughout_o the_o whole_a spirit_n soul_n and_o body_n see_v then_o that_o the_o lover_n of_o the_o world_n be_v never_o satisfy_v with_o riches_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n but_o still_o wish_v and_o seek_v for_o more_o yea_o god_n command_v the_o contrary_a neither_o let_v we_o be_v content_a with_o present_a grace_n and_o virtue_n but_o labour_n for_o a_o increase_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o of_o that_o crown_n of_o glory_n which_o we_o daily_o expect_v see_v god_n so_o earnest_o desire_v that_o we_o shall_v obtain_v it_o and_o if_o so_o be_v our_o mind_n and_o appetite_n be_v not_o therefore_o set_v
upon_o this_o course_n of_o godliness_n because_o it_o be_v profitable_a for_o we_o to_o salvation_n yet_o let_v they_o for_o this_o cause_n enlarge_v themselves_o to_o the_o high_a extent_n of_o serve_v god_n because_o they_o know_v it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o in_o all_o thing_n we_o may_v be_v magnify_v as_o the_o son_n of_o such_o a_o eternal_a father_n who_o be_v in_o heaven_n and_o admonish_v we_o say_v 19_o leu._n 19_o beâ—_n you_o holy_a because_o i_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n and_o father_n be_o holy_a have_v promise_v thus_o much_o concern_v the_o harm_n which_o ensue_v the_o ignorance_n of_o a_o certain_a method_n in_o serve_v of_o god_n i_o will_v now_o descend_v to_o the_o first_o part_n which_o be_v the_o general_a instruction_n direct_v we_o in_o all_o our_o action_n wherein_o we_o must_v observe_v these_o seven_o several_a instruction_n and_o help_n 1._o instruction_n that_o know_v ourselves_o to_o be_v naked_a miserable_a and_o of_o all_o good_a thing_n indigent_a we_o shall_v labour_v ever_o by_o all_o mean_n to_o procure_v the_o grace_n and_o help_v of_o god_n that_o there_o may_v be_v such_o a_o change_n make_v in_o our_o soul_n whereby_o we_o may_v seel_v that_o our_o will_n insist_o upon_o this_o not_o to_o seek_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v our_o own_o as_o our_o own_o but_o to_o seek_v god_n and_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n be_v in_o he_o and_o ourselves_o as_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o god_n and_o whorewith_o of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o mercy_n he_o wish_v himself_o to_o be_v serve_v so_o that_o we_o hold_v evermore_o his_o most_o excellent_a grace_n and_o infinite_a glory_n as_o our_o own_o good_n nay_o far_o more_o excellent_a than_o our_o own_o and_o that_o we_o praise_v he_o and_o rejoice_v in_o he_o more_o than_o in_o any_o good_a thing_n which_o either_o we_o have_v or_o hope_v for_o or_o can_v happen_v unto_o we_o account_v it_o a_o perfect_a happiness_n that_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n may_v possess_v infinite_a good_a thing_n and_o now_o it_o do_v possess_v and_o as_o not_o have_v any_o care_n or_o regard_n of_o our_o own_o self_n yet_o labour_v by_o all_o mean_n that_o we_o may_v be_v receive_v into_o heaven_n where_o we_o may_v behold_v he_o and_o more_o perfect_o enjoy_v he_o not_o for_o our_o own_o joy_n and_o comfort_v alone_o but_o for_o that_o the_o divine_a majesty_n be_v of_o infinite_a glory_n of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v so_o magnify_v with_o the_o sublime_a inheritance_n and_o riches_n which_o himself_o possess_v and_o with_o he_o all_o those_o which_o for_o their_o last_o rest_n and_o good_a do_v desire_n that_o the_o divine_a majesty_n may_v have_v so_o great_a glory_n as_o it_o have_v and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v one_o spirit_n with_o god_n and_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o christian_a perfection_n for_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n clear_a by_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n and_o holy_a father_n that_o we_o be_v all_o least_o low_a and_o vile_a of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o god_n but_o that_o use_v they_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o serve_v for_o our_o necessity_n according_a to_o god_n ordinance_n we_o spend_v our_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o sublime_a and_o high_a work_n of_o our_o great_a god_n who_o to_o this_o end_n create_v we_o that_o he_o may_v make_v we_o bless_v and_o the_o enjoyer_n of_o his_o own_o self_n who_o be_v a_o infinite_a good_a in_o who_o we_o shall_v far_o more_o eminent_o and_o abundant_o possess_v all_o good_a thing_n than_o we_o be_v able_a to_o magine_v again_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o albeit_o god_n have_v not_o tie_v we_o under_o the_o commination_n of_o eternal_a death_n that_o we_o shall_v perpetual_o intend_v nothing_o else_o but_o his_o observance_n but_o only_o then_o when_o any_o of_o his_o commandment_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v yet_o by_o the_o law_n of_o equity_n whereby_o we_o ought_v to_o observe_v ourselves_o as_o the_o son_n of_o so_o great_a a_o father_n not_o only_o man_n of_o a_o religious_a profession_n but_o even_o all_o christian_n be_v bind_v to_o procure_v unto_o themselves_o a_o more_o sublime_a and_o heavenly_a degree_n of_o sanctity_n and_o evermore_o to_o serve_v that_o so_o mighty_a a_o lord_n and_o father_n for_o it_o be_v not_o of_o some_o few_o but_o of_o all_o in_o general_a that_o the_o lord_n pronounce_v those_o word_n let_v we_o make_v man_n according_a to_o our_o own_o image_n and_o smilitude_n and_o then_o be_v man_n whole_o find_v according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n when_o he_o exercise_v himself_o herein_o to_o know_v and_o love_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o god_n take_v exceed_v great_a joy_n thereat_o and_o in_o the_o gospel_n he_o say_v be_v you_o perfect_a 5._o math._n 5._o as_o your_o heavenly_a father_n be_v also_o perfect_a sure_o it_o be_v most_o meet_a that_o he_o be_v holy_a who_o be_v the_o son_n of_o he_o who_o seraphines_n incessant_o call_v holy_a holy_a holy_a that_o never_o forget_v who_o son_n we_o be_v we_o shall_v not_o think_v it_o sufficient_a to_o be_v holy_a in_o a_o low_a degree_n but_o as_o our_o frailty_n will_v suffer_v we_o to_o strive_v for_o the_o goal_n of_o all_o perfection_n abstract_v our_o heart_n from_o the_o love_n of_o all_o earthly_a thing_n and_o reflect_v they_o upon_o our_o father_n who_o be_v of_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o with_o great_a affection_n illuminate_v and_o sanctify_v all_o that_o come_v to_o his_o majesty_n as_o to_o the_o father_n of_o infinite_a dignity_n and_o excellency_n know_v then_o our_o obligation_n whereby_o we_o be_v all_o bind_v to_o this_o duty_n of_o holiness_n and_o chief_o such_o as_o have_v take_v upon_o they_o the_o office_n of_o guide_n and_o shepherd_n let_v we_o withal_o remark_n that_o as_o in_o this_o world_n the_o great_a nearness_n and_o friendship_n which_o a_o mortal_a man_n can_v obtain_v with_o a_o king_n be_v that_o he_o be_v of_o one_o will_n desire_n and_o heavenly_a seruer_n of_o god_n scil_n by_o seek_v nothing_o but_o the_o good_a will_n of_o our_o good_a god_n in_o all_o our_o action_n we_o proceed_v to_o the_o instruction_n follow_v 2_o instruction_n that_o we_o ever_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o the_o end_n and_o scope_n by_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v admonish_v to_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o serve_v for_o the_o reparation_n and_o remedy_n of_o our_o wound_a soul_n yea_o whatsoever_o we_o determine_v to_o do_v before_o all_o other_o thing_n the_o eye_n of_o our_o observation_n must_v be_v upon_o the_o end_n that_o move_v we_o see_v then_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_a good_a that_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o great_a good_a work_n which_o be_v more_o pure_o perform_v in_o his_o sight_n for_o declaration_n whereof_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v that_o it_o behove_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n who_o will_v please_v his_o lord_n to_o plant_v in_o his_o soul_n a_o very_a puissant_a will_n or_o habit_n of_o will_v engender_v of_o strong_a and_o frequent_a act_n of_o will_v it_o which_o will_n or_o habit_n so_o ingraff_v in_o he_o may_v move_v he_o and_o make_v he_o think_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o do_v in_o body_n or_o soul_n whatsoever_o he_o shall_v think_v or_o speak_v nay_o all_o the_o virtue_n he_o shall_v acquire_v together_o with_o this_o same_o remedy_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o all_o his_o devotion_n i_o say_v to_o do_v a_o work_v acceptable_a to_o he_o this_o i_o say_v be_v the_o thing_n i_o mean_v that_o he_o shall_v in_o some_o sort_n forger_n the_o good_a and_o glory_n which_o may_v befall_v himself_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o virtue_n be_v only_o mindful_a of_o god_n which_o require_v it_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n only_o will_v do_v it_o because_o god_n will_v it_o and_o command_v it_o and_o not_o without_o great_a cause_n of_o his_o goodness_n require_v it_o to_o make_v this_o plain_a by_o example_n conceive_v a_o sick_a man_n who_o for_o the_o recovery_n of_o his_o health_n desire_v some_o meat_n or_o medicine_n and_o not_o only_o desire_v it_o but_o procure_v it_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n it_o fall_v out_o that_o some_o dear_a friend_n of_o his_o fall_n sick_a of_o a_o more_o dangerous_a disease_n and_o stand_v much_o more_o need_n of_o that_o meat_n or_o physic_n here_o he_o that_o be_v first_o sick_a be_v unmindful_a of_o his_o sickness_n how_o great_a soever_o and_o of_o that_o desire_n he_o have_v to_o it_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n begin_v now_o to_o desire_v the_o same_o and_o to_o procure_v it_o not_o to_o himself_o but_o to_o his_o friend_n so_o that_o the_o love_n to_o his_o friend_n make_v he_o desire_v and_o procure_v that_o which_o be_v needful_a for_o himself_o not_o to_o satisfy_v his_o own_o necessity_n but_o the_o necessity_n of_o his_o friend_n so_o that_o after_o he_o have_v by_o sundry_a way_n busy_v himself_o find_v it_o he_o perceive_v in_o his_o mind_n a_o certain_a boil_a desire_n to_o get_v it_o for_o his_o friend_n as_o forget_v that_o he_o need_v it_o himself_o and_o have_v get_v it_o rejoice_v great_o that_o the_o will_n and_o necessity_n of_o his_o friend_n be_v satisfy_v the_o like_a aught_o it_o to_o be_v to_o he_o that_o shall_v move_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n to_o every_o desire_n and_o work_v even_o the_o like_a by_o all_o mean_n namely_o that_o in_o his_o soul_n he_o feel_v a_o instinct_n whereby_o to_o desire_v and_o do_v that_o be_v good_a but_o that_o desire_n must_v be_v because_o god_n will_v that_o the_o thing_n be_v do_v and_o by_o that_o lead_v a_o man_n to_o perform_v obedience_n to_o he_o as_o if_o it_o be_v very_o necessary_a to_o he_o and_o ever_o forget_v that_o by_o these_o virtue_n which_o he_o seek_v desire_a or_o wrought_v he_o shall_v attain_v glory_n and_o salvation_n for_o it_o be_v a_o far_o more_o necessary_a end_n that_o we_o therefore_o work_v because_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o do_v it_o and_o for_o his_o goodness_n which_o move_v we_o to_o love_v and_o serve_v he_o then_o that_o we_o ourselves_o shall_v possess_v glory_n for_o we_o ought_v to_o desire_v that_o we_o may_v enjoy_v glory_n and_o good_a thing_n chief_o for_o that_o cause_n because_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o desire_v and_o have_v they_o and_o that_o in_o have_v they_o we_o may_v love_v he_o and_o after_o a_o excellent_a manner_n serve_v he_o and_o not_o for_o our_o own_o profit_n joy_n or_o glory_n and_o so_o great_a be_v the_o magnificence_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n that_o by_o how_o much_o as_o we_o do_v in_o this_o manner_n the_o more_o desire_n or_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n so_o much_o more_o shall_v be_v our_o glory_n in_o heaven_n this_o instruction_n i_o confess_v may_v seem_v unto_o many_o to_o be_v full_a of_o difficulty_n but_o sure_o the_o beginning_n of_o all_o thing_n do_v appear_v to_o be_v such_o to_o all_o beginner_n for_o they_o judge_v they_o shall_v never_o attain_v to_o that_o they_o have_v begin_v but_o yet_o so_o long_o do_v they_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o those_o thing_n that_o by_o continual_a exercise_n they_o become_v master_n where_o at_o first_o they_o dare_v not_o call_v themselves_o scholar_n and_o observe_v it_o for_o truth_n that_o if_o any_o man_n have_v a_o will_n inflame_v with_o devotion_n he_o shall_v do_v all_o these_o thing_n with_o such_o facility_n that_o in_o a_o sinall_z space_n of_o time_n he_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v do_v wonderful_a thing_n but_o unto_o he_o who_o be_v not_o enkindle_v with_o so_o great_a a_o flame_n of_o devotion_n this_o must_v be_v a_o rule_n which_o we_o now_o lie_v down_o wherein_o shall_v distinct_o be_v touch_v the_o manner_n and_o reason_n which_o he_o must_v observe_v in_o attain_v unto_o it_o let_v a_o man_n on_o the_o one_o side_n propose_v god_n as_o his_o chief_a friend_n and_o himself_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o the_o will_n be_v move_v to_o desire_v any_o virtue_n or_o profitable_a thing_n let_v a_o man_n consider_v with_o what_o end_n he_o it_o move_v and_o he_o shall_v perceive_v for_o the_o most_o part_n that_o he_o be_v move_v either_o with_o fear_n of_o punishment_n or_o love_n of_o glory_n and_o virtue_n now_o this_o motive_n ought_v not_o to_o satisfy_v we_o although_o it_o be_v not_o evil_a but_o see_v man_n will_n prevent_v and_o assist_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n have_v so_o much_o freedom_n and_o power_n in_o some_o measure_n as_o to_o forsake_v the_o one_o and_o choose_v the_o other_o and_o see_v we_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o be_v much_o more_o excellent_a and_o more_o worthy_a to_o move_v we_o than_o our_o own_o will_n we_o must_v now_o forbear_v to_o be_v move_v after_o that_o manner_n as_o we_o have_v be_v and_o turn_v all_o our_o will_n to_o desire_v the_o same_o thing_n after_o the_o best_a manner_n namely_o because_o he_o will_v have_v it_o so_o who_o be_v worthy_a of_o all_o obedience_n sure_o he_o shall_v of_o right_a account_n himself_o vile_a and_o wretched_a who_o desire_v or_o do_v any_o thing_n move_v thereunto_o with_o a_o natural_a desire_n albeit_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a and_o holy_a see_v he_o have_v ever_o the_o will_n of_o god_n present_a before_o he_o which_o shall_v move_v he_o ever_o to_o will_n and_o desire_n but_o chief_o see_v god_n give_v ever_o such_o strength_n as_o that_o one_o may_v forsake_v his_o own_o will_n as_o it_o be_v stir_v up_o with_o a_o natural_a desire_n albeit_o a_o good_a desire_n and_o be_v move_v with_o a_o heavenly_a desire_n and_o so_o much_o difference_n there_o be_v betwixt_o these_o two_o scope_n and_o motive_n that_o nothing_o in_o this_o world_n differ_v more_o from_o another_o than_o these_o two_o do_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o so_o that_o the_o one_o of_o these_o be_v incomparable_o more_o excellent_a than_o another_o as_o the_o sun_n exceed_v the_o brightness_n of_o a_o candle_n the_o sea_n a_o drop_n of_o water_n infinite_a talent_n of_o gold_n a_o piece_n of_o lead_n therefore_o let_v we_o ever_o endeavour_n to_o desire_v and_o work_v be_v move_v with_o so_o happy_a a_o end_n and_o motive_n see_v the_o divine_a goodness_n most_o desirous_a of_o our_o advancement_n and_o glory_n do_v bind_v un_o to_o do_v all_o our_o work_n corporal_a and_o spiritual_a great_a and_o small_a proceed_v from_o the_o body_n or_o the_o soul_n even_o such_o as_o be_v do_v according_a to_o our_o natural_a disposition_n to_o do_v they_o i_o say_v only_o because_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v do_v they_o for_o all_o our_o action_n from_o the_o least_o to_o the_o great_a serve_v for_o the_o conservation_n of_o this_o natural_a life_n and_o as_o we_o can_v forsake_v they_o so_o in_o use_v they_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n they_o much_o further_a to_o the_o increase_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o happy_a life_n and_o so_o the_o least_o and_o mean_a work_n we_o do_v be_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n of_o more_o worth_n than_o the_o best_a and_o high_a action_n perform_v of_o he_o that_o have_v not_o the_o same_o scope_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n wonderful_a and_o worthy_a of_o
great_a difficulty_n in_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o sublime_a and_o heavenly_a manner_n for_o this_o purpose_n those_o that_o will_v serve_v god_n aright_o must_v consider_v their_o own_o disposition_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a aright_o to_o meet_v with_o their_o own_o defect_n therefore_o they_o must_v know_v that_o the_o evil_a whereby_o they_o be_v draw_v from_o serve_v god_n after_o this_o most_o divine_a manner_n proceed_v from_o sin_n which_o have_v weaken_v the_o soul_n and_o subdue_v it_o to_o itself_o for_o if_o sin_n have_v not_o interpose_v itself_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v every_o good_a thing_n with_o much_o facility_n but_o sin_n once_o arryve_v in_o the_o soul_n all_o our_o desire_n will_n and_o appetite_n be_v become_v so_o dissolute_a disorder_a and_o rebellious_a by_o that_o grievous_a special_a disease_n arise_v from_o sin_n that_o now_o loathe_v that_o which_o be_v good_a we_o scarce_o love_v affect_v or_o desire_v any_o thing_n save_o the_o most_o abject_a worth_a less_o and_o vicious_a thing_n forget_v that_o infinite_a good_a unto_o which_o we_o be_v create_v as_o the_o thing_n wherein_o we_o have_v neither_o relish_n nor_o savour_n and_o hence_o proceed_v the_o confusion_n and_o perturbation_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o so_o much_o distract_v from_o the_o true_a god_n whereunto_o we_o be_v create_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v absolute_o and_o only_o good_a be_v cast_v off_o we_o incline_v ever_o and_o greedy_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a yet_o must_v we_o know_v that_o howsoever_o this_o sin_n have_v make_v such_o a_o slaughter_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o friend_n leave_v to_o take_v arm_n against_o it_o yet_o do_v not_o our_o obligation_n cease_v from_o bind_v we_o to_o do_v what_o be_v our_o duty_n and_o for_o which_o we_o come_v into_o this_o world_n for_o albeit_o this_o great_a infirmity_n do_v so_o enfeeble_v we_o that_o we_o do_v all_o good_a thing_n with_o great_a difficulty_n yet_o do_v it_o not_o make_v we_o altogether_o so_o impotent_a but_o that_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o grace_n and_o divine_a favour_n whereby_o to_o repair_v this_o our_o former_a overthrow_n and_o destruction_n beside_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o by_o so_o much_o more_o do_v we_o grow_v to_o a_o admirable_a disposition_n of_o serve_v god_n aright_o which_o disposition_n have_v ever_o remain_v in_o the_o soul_n unto_o all_o good_a thing_n if_o sin_n have_v not_o disease_v it_o by_o how_o much_o more_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o appetite_n and_o desire_n repair_v and_o dispose_v which_o by_o sin_n be_v former_o indispose_v and_o he_o shall_v have_v they_o repair_v who_o with_o a_o attentive_a care_n and_o profound_a consideration_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o speak_v of_o shall_v direct_v they_o all_o to_o the_o lord_n with_o a_o repugnancy_n to_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v without_o the_o will_n of_o this_o lord_n and_o a_o follow_v of_o all_o such_o remedy_n as_o be_v here_o describe_v and_o in_o that_o degree_n wherein_o any_o shall_v obtain_v this_o in_o the_o same_o shall_v he_o be_v advance_v here_o in_o sanctity_n and_o afterward_o in_o glory_n and_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o herein_o one_o may_v so_o profit_v by_o assiduity_n and_o diligence_n as_o that_o he_o may_v do_v all_o thing_n with_o great_a faclity_n and_o delight_n to_o which_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o more_o easy_o advance_v if_o he_o often_o and_o attentive_o read_v these_o instruction_n 5_o instruction_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o body_n and_o soul_n sufficient_a mean_n for_o the_o reparation_n of_o this_o decay_n and_o ruin_n if_o they_o be_v stir_v up_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n as_o we_o have_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n so_o we_o have_v in_o both_o of_o they_o instrument_n wherewith_o to_o work_v for_o as_o the_o body_n have_v foot_n to_o walk_v hand_n to_o work_n mouth_n to_o speak_v and_o the_o like_a so_o the_o soul_n have_v the_o understanding_n wherewith_o to_o know_v the_o will_n wherewith_o to_o desire_v and_o diverse_a other_o faculty_n of_o the_o appetite_n but_o it_o must_v be_v observe_v that_o the_o more_o excellent_a the_o worker_n be_v together_o with_o the_o instrument_n so_o much_o more_o worthy_a be_v the_o work_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v suitable_a corporal_a action_n have_v so_o much_o more_o excellency_n in_o they_o by_o how_o much_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n concur_v to_o the_o act_n be_v more_o excellent_a now_o that_o be_v call_v a_o singular_a instrument_n which_o to_o the_o production_n of_o the_o act_n be_v move_v by_o a_o good_a end_n therefore_o the_o most_o excellent_a instrument_n be_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will_n which_o can_v be_v move_v of_o god_n alone_o as_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o second_o instruction_n therefore_o of_o small_a worth_n be_v corporal_a thing_n which_o do_v not_o so_o proceed_v and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o saint_n paul_n say_v 4._o 1._o tim._n 4._o bodily_a labour_n profit_v little_a but_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o another_o kind_n namely_o because_o of_o themselves_o they_o may_v be_v of_o great_a profit_n as_o if_o one_o exercise_v his_o understanding_n shall_v consider_v how_o base_a and_o abject_a the_o honour_n of_o this_o world_n be_v and_o of_o what_o value_n those_o thing_n which_o god_n command_v be_v and_o how_o unspeakable_a that_o glory_n be_v to_o which_o we_o aspire_v also_o to_o know_v how_o one_o may_v moderate_v his_o passion_n and_o the_o like_a again_o if_o one_o exercise_v himself_o in_o his_o will_n love_v that_o which_o he_o know_v be_v good_a and_o refuse_v that_o be_v evil_a such_o refusal_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v very_o profitable_a albeit_o the_o body_n be_v very_o idle_a for_o by_o such_o exercise_n will_v be_v produce_v excellent_a habit_n and_o the_o evil_a habit_n destroy_v which_o thing_n of_o itself_o be_v very_o laudable_a albeit_o do_v for_o the_o only_a love_n of_o virtue_n as_o philosopher_n do_v yet_o much_o more_o be_v in_o a_o christian_n who_o have_v faith_n but_o most_o of_o all_o if_o in_o every_o work_n we_o join_v faith_n with_o our_o intention_n actual_o direct_v unto_o god_n hence_o may_v it_o be_v observe_v how_o much_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o action_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o thing_n he_o may_v do_v whether_o he_o be_v employ_v in_o body_n or_o no_o in_o every_o time_n and_o place_n so_o that_o speak_v with_o another_o in_o any_o temporal_a affair_n yet_o may_v he_o in_o soul_n work_v by_o love_a god_n recal_v to_o mind_n some_o of_o his_o work_n this_o may_v seem_v difficult_a to_o he_o that_o have_v not_o attain_v the_o habit_n thereof_o yet_o custom_n will_v make_v it_o easy_a as_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o virtue_n be_v practise_v about_o difficult_a thing_n therefore_o violence_n be_v to_o be_v use_v to_o the_o will_n that_o thou_o may_v become_v a_o industrious_a workman_n to_o do_v singular_a thing_n with_o facility_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o attempt_v no_o marvel_n be_v it_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v more_o devout_a towards_o god_n see_v he_o be_v ever_o ready_a to_o assist_v thy_o desire_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o to_o withstand_v thy_o proneness_n to_o evil_a so_o that_o thou_o do_v right_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o be_v sure_a that_o if_o thou_o desire_v on_o earth_n to_o be_v a_o great_a and_o excellent_a friend_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n thou_o shall_v the_o soon_o attain_v unto_o it_o by_o how_o much_o thou_o do_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n thy_o understanding_n and_o will_n at_o all_o time_n and_o place_n and_o this_o be_v it_o which_o advance_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n to_o so_o much_o glory_n in_o heaven_n the_o neglect_n whereof_o be_v so_o unblamable_a on_o earth_n see_v then_o our_o high_a glory_n consist_v herein_o for_o the_o most_o part_n that_o we_o work_v by_o these_o instrument_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o our_o ruin_n in_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o exercise_n let_v we_o see_v what_o course_n we_o must_v take_v who_o have_v as_o yet_o be_v even_o liveless_a to_o use_v these_o instrument_n of_o the_o foul_a and_o that_o we_o may_v begin_v with_o the_o understanding_n leave_v the_o will_n to_o the_o next_o instruction_n we_o will_v premise_v this_o theological_a and_o philosophical_a fundamental_a rule_n that_o our_o natural_a appetite_n do_v natural_o desire_v that_o to_o which_o it_o be_v incline_v &_o seem_v pleasant_a to_o it_o not_o stand_v need_n of_o any_o thing_n to_o help_v or_o invite_v unto_o it_o but_o rather_o necessary_o &_o as_o it_o be_v coact_o desire_v it_o but_o so_o do_v not_o the_o will_v work_v burr_n first_o
consult_v with_o reason_n and_o find_v that_o the_o thing_n be_v convenient_a for_o it_o it_o be_v then_o free_o move_v to_o will_n and_o desire_v it_o therefore_o the_o philosopher_n say_v that_o nothing_o be_v desire_v that_o be_v not_o foreknow_v whence_o we_o collect_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o we_o have_v in_o our_o understanding_n be_v like_o a_o light_n whereby_o the_o will_n may_v see_v what_o it_o ought_v to_o desire_v this_o therefore_o be_v presuppose_v we_o must_v chief_o regard_v that_o to_o do_v well_o and_o perfect_o the_o understanding_n do_v not_o err_v in_o knowledge_n which_o bce_v have_v present_o the_o will_n be_v move_v to_o desire_v that_o which_o be_v so_o know_v but_o if_o the_o understanding_n do_v err_v which_o often_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o the_o malice_n which_o blind_v we_o or_o happy_o it_o err_v not_o but_o the_o will_n through_o the_o liberty_n it_o have_v to_o evil_a will_v not_o follow_v that_o it_o know_v to_o be_v good_a then_o man_n fall_v into_o all_o kind_n of_o mischief_n therefore_o omit_v many_o thing_n which_o may_v serve_v for_o this_o purpose_n this_o be_v chief_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o we_o be_v most_o attentive_a ever_o when_o we_o will_v use_v the_o understanding_n that_o when_o we_o will_v desire_v to_o do_v any_o good_a work_n or_o to_o get_v a_o disposition_n thereunto_o namely_o to_o be_v despise_v of_o man_n to_o flee_v all_o delight_n of_o the_o world_n which_o godly_a man_n ever_o abandon_v in_o these_o and_o the_o like_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v grievous_a unto_o we_o to_o do_v or_o desire_v by_o and_o by_o we_o must_v use_v the_o help_n of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o we_o consider_v and_o apprehend_v these_o thing_n as_o most_o precious_a and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o such_o as_o do_v accompany_v the_o godly_a man_n to_o heaven_n without_o which_o he_o be_v ever_o out_o of_o his_o way_n to_o that_o happiness_n which_o assoon_o as_o it_o know_v to_o be_v such_o than_o the_o will_n take_v courage_n to_o will_n and_o embrace_v that_o thing_n and_o also_o to_o practice_v it_o for_o albeit_o the_o will_n as_o it_o be_v assist_v by_o god_n spirit_n work_v sweet_o yet_o often_o the_o difficulty_n and_o sharpness_n of_o the_o thing_n so_o deter_v it_o that_o it_o fail_v to_o work_v omit_v the_o duty_n it_o be_v bind_v unto_o but_o as_o we_o endeavour_n to_o make_v way_n unto_o it_o by_o the_o understanding_n as_o i_o have_v say_v it_o will_v assume_v such_o courage_n and_o strength_n that_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o work_n be_v know_v albeit_o most_o painful_a it_o will_v desire_v to_o do_v it_o and_o almost_o with_o as_o great_a facility_n will_v do_v it_o as_o that_o thing_n which_o it_o natural_o desire_v he_o that_o work_v after_o this_o manner_n shall_v easy_o become_v a_o man_n of_o singular_a virtue_n and_o shall_v make_v a_o wonderful_a repair_n in_o his_o soul_n of_o the_o slaughter_n and_o ruin_v which_o sin_n have_v there_o make_v and_o shall_v also_o with_o great_a facility_n do_v that_o which_o make_v man_n happy_a both_o in_o earth_n and_o heaven_n namely_o know_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o god_n and_o know_v to_o love_v they_o and_o love_v to_o rejoice_v in_o they_o contemn_v all_o earthly_a joy_n and_o pleasure_n for_o they_o 6_o instruction_n that_o god_n be_v please_v to_o give_v to_o all_o his_o saint_n and_o such_o as_o from_o the_o heart_n seek_v to_o serve_v he_o such_o a_o strength_n of_o will_n whereby_o they_o may_v both_o desire_v &_o love_n refuse_v &_o desire_v any_o thing_n so_o be_v it_o to_o do_v the_o same_o as_o often_o as_o he_o will_v bend_v his_o will_n and_o use_v the_o holy_a mean_n thereunto_o yea_o every_o hour_n as_o by_o how_o much_o
