other_o be_v give_v they_o with_o ease_n and_o sweetness_n the_o one_o be_v acquire_v or_o natural_a this_o other_o infuse_v and_o supernatural_a far_o surpass_v our_o capacity_n and_o reach_v more_o inward_a with_o great_a light_n sweetness_n and_o satisfaction_n and_o a_o deep_a impression_n of_o truth_n in_o the_o soul_n for_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o more_o noble_a of_o spring_n and_o begin_n which_o be_v god_n himself_o also_o it_o leave_v and_o dispose_v the_o soul_n rich_o and_o well_o for_o high_a matter_n so_o that_o in_o the_o first_o we_o work_v in_o ourselves_o that_o recollection_n in_o this_o other_o we_o be_v the_o patient_a and_o god_n work_v it_o in_o we_o therefore_o he_o say_v by_o his_o holy_a prophet_n i_o will_v 14._o o_o see_v 2._o v._n 14._o lead_v she_o into_o the_o solitude_n or_o wilderness_n and_o there_o i_o will_v speak_v unto_o her_o heart_n he_o do_v not_o say_v that_o she_o will_v go_v but_o i_o will_v bring_v she_o thither_o to_o show_v that_o the_o work_n be_v he_o and_o a_o gift_n that_o the_o soul_n with_o all_o her_o labour_n and_o industry_n can_v never_o reach_v unto_o or_o compass_v that_o she_o may_v be_v the_o more_o grateful_a 9_o but_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o as_o by_o degree_n we_o acquire_v moral_a virtue_n or_o the_o perfection_n of_o natural_a prayer_n so_o by_o degree_n or_o certain_a step_n as_o we_o may_v say_v god_n lead_v his_o belove_a spouse_n into_o this_o solitude_n and_o paradise_n of_o delight_n and_o first_o he_o give_v she_o a_o continual_a presence_n of_o himself_o which_o be_v supernatural_a with_o so_o efficatious_a and_o feel_a a_o knowledge_n that_o she_o can_v but_o certain_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v there_o within_o she_o yet_o she_o perhaps_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o it_o to_o know_v what_o it_o be_v but_o the_o light_n be_v great_a and_o the_o effect_n of_o his_o presence_n be_v very_o evident_a this_o be_v not_o a_o imaginary_a presence_n but_o a_o light_n that_o bring_v a_o majesty_n with_o it_o which_o with_o one_o look_n on_o it_o procure_v in_o the_o soul_n most_o profound_a humility_n and_o a_o admirable_a reverential_a respect_n towards_o his_o divine_a majesty_n out_o of_o which_o aspect_n and_o respect_n there_o follow_v a_o sweet_a content_n and_o many_o delightful_a tear_n so_o that_o when_o the_o soul_n please_v she_o may_v look_v in_o and_o present_o find_v with_o who_o to_o converse_v without_o any_o labour_n and_o sufficient_a matter_n to_o keep_v she_o employ_v and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o step_n or_o degree_n 10._o the_o second_o step_n wherein_o he_o lead_v she_o forward_o be_v that_o recollection_n of_o which_o i_o speak_v last_o for_o the_o joy_n and_o content_v which_o proceed_v from_o that_o continual_a aspect_n instant_o recollect_v all_o the_o power_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o much_o distract_v before_o and_o give_v they_o so_o serious_a employment_n that_o they_o easy_o forget_v all_o outward_a object_n attend_v only_o to_o what_o be_v there_o which_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o have_v great_a freedom_n have_v nothing_o to_o divert_v her_o intention_n nor_o attention_n out_o of_o that_o recollection_n and_o serious_a attention_n the_o light_n and_o affection_n do_v increase_v at_o which_o the_o power_n be_v in_o admiration_n and_o silence_n and_o this_o be_v the_o three_o degree_n expect_v to_o see_v what_o will_v be_v the_o conclusion_n for_o here_o the_o soul_n seem_v true_o to_o have_v find_v who_o she_o love_v 4._o cant._n 3._o v._n 4._o and_o seek_v for_o and_o now_o do_v hold_v himfast_n and_o will_v not_o let_v he_o go_v as_o be_v say_v in_o the_o canticle_n they_o be_v here_o present_a to_o gether_o very_o evident_o and_o feel_o there_o be_v no_o noise_n of_o word_n inward_o but_o by_o affection_n and_o love_v they_o be_v unite_v forcible_o rest_v sweet_o in_o the_o bed_n of_o delight_n and_o the_o very_a power_n have_v so_o great_a content_n and_o satisfaction_n that_o they_o will_v not_o have_v the_o very_a body_n to_o move_v or_o breath_n lest_o as_o our_o holy_a mother_n say_v 15._o in_o her_o life_n chap._n 15._o so_o great_a a_o good_a shall_v be_v lose_v or_o escape_v out_o of_o her_o hand_n as_o if_o by_o that_o mean_v she_o can_v keep_v it_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n depend_v only_o of_o his_o divine_a will_n and_o pleasure_n who_o give_v it_o when_o to_o who_o and_o for_o as_o long_a time_n as_o he_o think_v fit_v and_o it_o can_v be_v no_o long_o here_o the_o soul_n true_o feel_v how_o great_a the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v and_o how_o sweet_a he_o be_v to_o those_o that_o love_v he_o 11._o hence_o his_o divine_a majesty_n lead_v she_o forward_o into_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o inward_a solitude_n that_o be_v to_o a_o high_a and_o more_o eminent_a degree_n of_o prayer_n where_o she_o may_v more_o perfect_o and_o full_o enjoy_v his_o presence_n and_o receive_v great_a blessing_n then_o in_o the_o former_a this_o be_v call_v the_o sleep_n of_o the_o power_n for_o in_o the_o former_a they_o all_o be_v in_o great_a silence_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v call_v quiet_a prayer_n or_o the_o prayer_n of_o rest_n by_o reason_n all_o the_o power_n there_o do_v rest_n from_o their_o operation_n or_o discourse_v be_v quiet_a and_o in_o silence_n out_o of_o which_o the_o soul_n fall_v more_o deep_o in_o love_n the_o delight_v all_o and_o they_o admire_v whence_o that_o so_o great_a content_n shall_v be_v which_o they_o do_v feel_v and_o in_o this_o sweet_a content_n and_o delightful_a admiration_n they_o do_v rest_n the_o other_o water_n do_v penetrate_v but_o little_a in_o comparison_n of_o this_o for_o this_o do_v enter_v into_o the_o very_a depth_n and_o inward_a substance_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o leave_v she_o satisfy_v for_o a_o long_a time_n by_o reason_n it_o be_v more_o plentiful_a and_o in_o great_a abundance_n 13._o and_o this_o be_v the_o benefit_n of_o a_o humble_a soul_n for_o as_o water_v remaine_n not_o on_o the_o top_n of_o hill_n or_o mountain_n but_o fall_v into_o the_o low_a place_n and_o valley_n so_o soul_n the_o good_a of_o a_o humble_a soul_n the_o water_n of_o comfort_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n can_v stay_v upon_o the_o hill_n or_o mountain_n of_o proud_a and_o presumptuous_a spirit_n but_o do_v fall_v into_o the_o valley_n of_o humility_n which_o be_v the_o humble_a heart_n that_o think_v lowly_a of_o itself_o for_o he_o do_v love_n to_o be_v with_o the_o humble_a and_o upon_o they_o his_o holy_a spirit_n do_v rest_n and_o to_o they_o he_o give_v his_o grace_n and_o bestow_v such_o favour_n upon_o they_o that_o with_o the_o great_a content_n and_o inward_a joy_n which_o they_o feel_v the_o power_n and_o sense_n be_v suspend_v when_o he_o be_v so_o please_v and_o the_o water_n of_o delight_n do_v so_o recreate_v and_o comfort_v both_o soul_n and_o body_n that_o some_o be_v sick_a go_v to_o prayer_n and_o bring_v to_o this_o quietness_n be_v not_o only_o during_o the_o time_n of_o that_o prayer_n senseless_a of_o any_o sickness_n but_o after_o prayer_n be_v void_a of_o all_o pain_n and_o in_o good_a health_n and_o many_o go_n to_o it_o with_o sore_a head_n after_o that_o prayer_n be_v very_o well_o and_o this_o be_v a_o know_a thing_n by_o experience_n 14._o so_o that_o this_o prayer_n leave_v great_a effect_n in_o body_n and_o soul_n for_o beside_o what_o be_v say_v above_o it_o dilate_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v the_o soul_n more_o capable_a of_o divine_a favour_n and_o free_a from_o servile_a fear_n worldly_a affection_n and_o proper_a interest_n she_o now_o do_v take_v delight_n in_o do_v of_o pennance_n she_o regard_v not_o commodity_n or_o health_n so_o she_o may_v but_o please_v and_o serve_v god_n in_o any_o thing_n her_o faith_n be_v more_o liuly_a her_o desire_n to_o suffer_v persecution_n and_o wrong_n for_o love_n of_o he_o increase_v she_o do_v more_o fear_n to_o offend_v god_n than_o all_o the_o torment_n and_o devil_n of_o hell_n by_o reason_n she_o do_v now_o love_v he_o who_o she_o do_v then_o perceive_v to_o be_v true_o love_n and_o praise_v worthy_a by_o all_o creature_n for_o his_o own_o goodness_n and_o perfection_n and_o therefore_o she_o do_v understand_v that_o it_o be_v a_o unworthy_a thing_n to_o offend_v so_o high_a a_o majesty_n in_o the_o least_o thing_n which_o do_v cause_v she_o to_o keep_v a_o pure_a conscience_n as_o near_o as_o she_o can_v her_o hope_n and_o confidence_n in_o his_o divine_a majesty_n and_o desire_v to_o enjoy_v he_o in_o reason_n they_o seem_v to_o they_o unpossible_a and_o that_o what_o be_v say_v of_o these_o rare_a matter_n be_v but_o a_o flourish_v of_o fair_a and_o sweet_a word_n and_o no_o real_a truth_n but_o be_v infinite_a and_o his_o work_n without_o limit_n we_o must_v conceive_v always_o great_a matter_n of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n and_o that_o as_o we_o dispose_v ourselves_o with_o the_o grace_n live_v but_o a_o painful_a life_n or_o rather_o a_o torment_a martyrdom_n and_o linger_a death_n so_o that_o all_o her_o desire_n be_v to_o be_v dissolve_v and_o be_v with_o christ_n yet_o though_o the_o pain_n which_o she_o do_v suffer_v be_v very_o great_a her_o inward_a joy_n be_v no_o less_o if_o not_o more_o but_o you_o shall_v see_v what_o she_o speak_v of_o rhese_n degree_n 5._o the_o first_o after_o union_n be_v when_o the_o soul_n like_a unto_o a_o flame_n proceed_v or_o ascend_v from_o a_o well_o kindle_v fire_n burn_v with_o the_o fire_n of_o divine_a love_n go_v out_o of_o feel_v a_o great_a certainty_n of_o his_o presence_n and_o it_o be_v of_o that_o majesty_n and_o efficacy_n that_o it_o cause_v all_o the_o power_n and_o sense_n instant_o to_o be_v recollect_v attentive_a and_o give_v their_o attendance_n though_o at_o that_o present_a they_o be_v much_o distract_v and_o they_o dare_v not_o then_o move_v or_o stir_v and_o this_o celestial_a call_n impulse_n or_o fiery_a dart_n do_v so_o inflame_v she_o that_o she_o be_v burn_v and_o a_o consume_n with_o the_o fire_n of_o divine_a love_n penetrate_v through_o her_o very_a bowel_n and_o the_o very_a inward_a substance_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o her_o pain_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o wound_n and_o the_o vehemency_n of_o love_n be_v so_o great_a that_o she_o can_v contain_v herself_o but_o lament_v and_o with_o most_o sweet_a and_o amorous_a word_n complain_v of_o her_o pain_n not_o be_v able_a to_o do_v otherwise_o to_o she_o dear_o belove_a who_o she_o know_v to_o be_v present_a and_o will_v not_o manifest_v himself_o which_o be_v a_o spur_n to_o forward_o and_o augment_v both_o love_n and_o pain_n and_o though_o this_o pain_n be_v with_o unspeakable_a delight_n it_o do_v not_o continue_v long_o but_o come_v and_o go_v and_o always_o do_v leave_v the_o soul_n inflame_v with_o divine_a love_n her_o desire_n to_o please_v he_o and_o serve_v his_o majesty_n in_o great_a matter_n do_v one_o do_v hear_v a_o good_a sermon_n or_o god_n well_o speak_v of_o or_o praise_v or_o music_n or_o at_o the_o sight_n of_o some_o sweet_a and_o devout_a picture_n and_o this_o come_v with_o a_o impulse_n in_o the_o depth_n or_o most_o inward_a of_o the_o soul_n so_o vehement_a sudden_a and_o swift_a that_o she_o can_v resist_v it_o more_o than_o a_o child_n to_o a_o giant_n but_o away_o
