do_v with_o these_o that_o be_v stranger_n to_o communion_n with_o the_o lord_n especial_o such_o of_o these_o as_o be_v ravish_v with_o earthly_a delight_n to_o bring_v forth_o in_o the_o first_o place_n such_o truth_n as_o may_v probable_o be_v most_o take_v prevalent_a and_o have_v best_a acceptance_n with_o they_o such_o as_o these_o be_v that_o do_v concern_v the_o lord_n large_a allowance_n of_o as_o much_o comfort_n even_o in_o outward_a thing_n as_o man_n can_v in_o reason_n desire_n that_o soul-ravishing_a sweetness_n be_v only_o to_o be_v find_v in_o spiritual_a exercise_n which_o will_v make_v all_o sinful_a delight_n loathsome_a and_o refine_v the_o lawful_a sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o the_o creature_n and_o so_o that_o religion_n be_v a_o friend_n both_o to_o the_o body_n and_o spirit_n of_o man_n for_o this_o be_v solomon_n method_n here_o who_o without_o doubt_n be_v direct_v to_o frame_v this_o book_n main_o for_o the_o convince_a and_o gain_v of_o man_n who_o be_v in_o the_o way_n that_o he_o himself_o be_v in_o before_o his_o recovery_n from_o his_o defection_n he_o do_v not_o at_o the_o first_o deliver_v the_o â—â—lictest_a of_o these_o precept_n which_o afterward_o he_o press_v in_o order_n to_o happiness_n but_o speak_v as_o if_o he_o concede_v much_o to_o man_n concern_v the_o use_n of_o sensual_a delight_n only_o mind_v they_o of_o their_o soul_n good_a which_o they_o can_v not_o in_o reason_n slight_a while_o he_o say_v there_o be_v nothing_o better_a for_o a_o man_n then_o that_o he_o shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a of_o his_o labour_n 2._o it_o be_v dangerous_a to_o leave_v man_n under_o conviction_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o course_n and_o apprehension_n of_o certain_a misery_n abide_v they_o except_o there_o be_v also_o some_o intimation_n of_o a_o probable_a way_n for_o they_o to_o be_v make_v happy_a and_o the_o same_o in_o some_o measure_n clear_v up_o to_o they_o lest_o they_o either_o return_n to_o their_o wont_a sinful_a delight_n as_o israel_n will_v have_v go_v back_o to_o egypt_n or_o choice_n to_o die_v in_o despair_n not_o dare_v to_o go_v back_o and_o not_o know_v how_o to_o go_v forward_o therefore_o solomon_n have_v speak_v somewhat_o concern_v the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o most_o plausible_a and_o promise_a course_n which_o man_n destitute_a of_o the_o lord_n spirit_n can_v take_v for_o satisfaction_n before_o he_o proceed_v further_o he_o insert_v here_o some_o discovery_n of_o true_a happiness_n that_o man_n may_v have_v the_o clear_a thought_n of_o it_o while_o he_o say_v there_o be_v nothing_o better_a for_o a_o man_n than_o that_o he_o shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a of_o his_o labour_n 3._o as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v acknowledge_v for_o a_o great_a blessing_n of_o god_n to_o have_v plenty_n of_o creature_n comfort_n and_o withal_o power_n to_o make_v use_n of_o they_o and_o find_v sweetness_n in_o they_o and_o not_o to_o be_v hinder_v therein_o either_o by_o inward_a exercise_n of_o spirit_n job_n 33.19.20_o such_o as_o the_o lord_n withdraw_v of_o his_o wont_a comfortable_a presence_n psal_n 102.9_o and_o 42.3_o by_o outward_a cross_n embitter_v the_o spirit_n 1_o sam._n 30.26.27_o by_o excessive_a fear_n of_o outward_a hazard_n psal_n 107.18_o by_o groundless_a scruple_n of_o conscience_n act._n 10.13.14_o or_o by_o miserable_a sparingness_n etc._n etc._n so_o it_o be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o but_o as_o the_o small_a part_n of_o our_o happiness_n and_o as_o no_o part_n of_o it_o at_o all_o unless_o in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n the_o soul_n be_v enjoy_v good_a suitable_a for_o it_o for_o as_o solomon_n commend_v eat_v and_o drink_v in_o the_o sense_n former_o mention_v so_o he_o do_v not_o commend_v it_o alone_o but_o as_o it_o usher_v in_o and_o promove_v some_o true_a good_a to_o be_v enjoy_v by_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_n 4._o minister_n when_o they_o confute_v the_o abuse_n of_o thing_n lawful_a and_o the_o excess_n of_o man_n affection_n to_o they_o shall_v withal_o assert_v and_o clear_v the_o lawful_a liberty_n of_o christian_n lest_o hearer_n who_o be_v ready_a to_o run_v from_o one_o sinful_a extreme_a to_o another_o from_o make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n in_o the_o excess_n or_o pamper_n of_o it_o to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o unto_o a_o neglect_v of_o the_o body_n to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v apprehend_v religion_n to_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o their_o bodily_a health_n and_o to_o the_o true_a cheerfulness_n of_o their_o natural_a spirit_n excess_n of_o sensual_a delight_n do_v here_o commend_v the_o right_a use_n of_o they_o which_o be_v consistent_a with_o and_o subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o its_o true_a good_a in_o fellowship_n with_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a etc._n etc._n 5_o the_o outmost_a of_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n by_o the_o child_n of_o the_o lord_n want_v not_o its_o own_o imperfection_n and_o mixture_n of_o trouble_n and_o toil_n with_o it_o the_o lord_n so_o dispose_v that_o man_n may_v long_o for_o that_o state_n where_o their_o happiness_n may_v be_v full_a and_o unmixed_a in_o heaven_n there_o shall_v be_v no_o use_n of_o the_o creature_n for_o eat_v drink_v and_o the_o like_a rev._n 7.16_o which_o take_v a_o great_a part_n of_o a_o man_n time_n to_o provide_v and_o use_v so_o frequent_o but_o in_o this_o life_n there_o be_v no_o better_a of_o it_o than_o to_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o that_o way_n to_o keep_v up_o ourselves_o that_o our_o soul_n may_v enjoy_v good_a of_o our_o labour_n 6._o the_o right_a use_n of_o creature_n comfort_n such_o as_o meat_n drink_v and_o the_o like_a be_v not_o only_o consistent_a with_o but_z subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o that_o true_a spiritual_a good_a which_o be_v suitable_a to_o it_o when_o we_o be_v by_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n lead_v to_o think_v upon_o and_o long_o for_o better_a and_o when_o the_o strength_n we_o receive_v thereby_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o praise_n and_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o this_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o commend_v carry_v along_o with_o it_o and_o promove_n the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o good_a and_o if_o man_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o neglect_v to_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a he_o be_v worse_a than_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v the_o soul_n enjoy_v good_n 7._o though_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v first_o and_o principal_o care_v for_o mat._n 6_o 33._o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o lord_n mind_n that_o our_o seek_v the_o good_a of_o our_o soul_n shall_v make_v we_o careless_a of_o our_o body_n but_o rather_o that_o we_o shall_v out_o of_o respect_n to_o our_o soul_n and_o the_o good_a thereof_o respect_v the_o good_a of_o our_o body_n in_o a_o sober_a
and_o holy_a manner_n so_o that_o to_o respect_v the_o body_n and_o care_n for_o it_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o soul_n that_o by_o the_o body_n the_o soul_n may_v be_v serve_v in_o serve_v its_o creator_n and_o not_o to_o neglect_v the_o soul_n or_o any_o duty_n relate_v to_o the_o welfare_n thereof_o for_o indulgence_n to_o the_o body_n be_v that_o golden_a path_n wherein_o man_n may_v expect_v some_o measure_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o the_o lord_n allow_v upon_o his_o child_n in_o this_o life_n for_o say_v he_o there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v and_o enjoy_v good_a of_o his_o labour_n 8._o every_o expression_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o to_o be_v look_v upon_o apart_o but_o some_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v joint_o with_o other_o sometime_o with_o such_o as_o go_v before_o sometime_o with_o such_o as_o follow_v after_o else_o man_n will_v be_v in_o hazard_n to_o wrest_v the_o scripture_n to_o their_o own_o destruction_n for_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o first_o expression_n in_o this_o verse_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v eat_v and_o drink_v without_o consider_v what_o follow_v it_o may_v seem_v to_o express_v the_o sense_n and_o mind_n of_o epicure_n but_o if_o we_o join_v it_o with_o the_o expression_n immediate_o follow_v of_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a then_o we_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o eat_v and_o drink_v here_o commend_v to_o be_v such_o as_o prejudge_v not_o the_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a good_a of_o man_n soul_n there_o be_v nothing_o better_a for_o a_o man_n then_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o make_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v good_a 9_o to_o have_v the_o outward_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n the_o power_n to_o use_v they_o and_o to_o find_v sweetness_n in_o the_o use_n of_o they_o and_o especial_o the_o grace_n to_o use_v they_o aright_o so_o as_o the_o use_n of_o they_o may_v not_o hinder_v but_o promove_v the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n all_o this_o be_v from_o the_o liberality_n and_o providence_n of_o a_o good_a god_n and_o in_o it_o our_o father_n allowance_n our_o redeemer_n purchase_v and_o our_o comforter_n presence_n and_o teach_n be_v to_o be_v acknowledge_v for_o so_o say_v solomon_n here_o that_o all_o be_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n the_o name_n god_n be_v in_o the_o plural_a number_n mind_v we_o of_o the_o three_o person_n of_o the_o bless_a trinity_n 10._o whatever_o minister_n say_v to_o the_o lord_n people_n they_o shall_v labour_v to_o see_v it_o by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o likewise_o by_o their_o own_o experience_n whereby_o they_o put_v these_o truth_n they_o deliver_v to_o the_o proof_n and_o labour_n to_o find_v the_o power_n of_o they_o upon_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o say_v he_o i_o see_v that_o this_o be_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n 11._o whereinsoever_o the_o lord_n make_v any_o of_o his_o servant_n to_o excel_v for_o outward_a enjoyment_n or_o privilege_n they_o shall_v labour_v so_o to_o carry_v themselves_o in_o the_o use_n thereof_o that_o from_o their_o own_o experience_n they_o may_v teach_v other_o how_o to_o use_v these_o outward_a advantage_n for_o the_o spiritual_a good_a of_o their_o soul_n consider_v that_o people_n who_o place_n their_o happiness_n in_o these_o thing_n be_v ready_a to_o think_v that_o if_o man_n know_v experimental_o the_o worth_n and_o sweetness_n which_o they_o fancy_v to_o be_v in_o they_o they_o will_v not_o so_o undervalue_v they_o for_o that_o solomon_n may_v convince_v all_o that_o their_o be_v no_o true_a happiness_n in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n except_o they_o be_v make_v subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v of_o that_o true_a good_a which_o be_v in_o fellowship_n with_o god_n he_o do_v by_o this_o question_n incite_v all_o to_o consider_v that_o he_o who_o assert_n this_o truth_n be_v inferior_a to_o none_o for_o plenty_n of_o outward_a comfort_n and_o conveniency_n of_o speedy_a enjoyment_n of_o they_o while_o he_o say_v who_o can_v eat_v or_o who_o can_v hasten_v thereunto_o more_o than_o i_o verse_n 26._o for_o god_n give_v to_o a_o man_n that_o be_v good_a in_o his_o sight_n wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o joy_n but_o to_o the_o sinner_n 〈◊〉_d give_v travel_n to_o gather_v and_o to_o heap_v up_o that_o he_o may_v give_v to_o he_o that_o be_v good_a before_o god_n this_o also_o be_v vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n have_v give_v a_o short_a sum_n of_o that_o true_a happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n he_o do_v here_o describe_v the_o blessedness_n of_o they_o that_o seek_v after_o it_o and_o the_o misery_n of_o these_o that_o slight_a it_o and_o this_o he_o bring_v in_o as_o a_o reason_n to_o move_v man_n to_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o it_o as_o for_o the_o man_n that_o take_v the_o right_a way_n of_o seek_v happiness_n who_o here_o he_o call_v the_o man_n that_o be_v good_a in_o god_n sight_n which_o signify_v one_o free_o favour_v and_o delight_v in_o and_o so_o a_o justify_v person_n through_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o one_o who_o be_v sincere_o study_v what_o be_v good_a or_o well-pleasing_a not_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o world_n but_o of_o god_n the_o lord_n give_v and_o give_v free_o and_o in_o give_v make_v sure_a and_o firm_a to_o he_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o joy_n whereby_o be_v mean_v nâ—t_o only_a skill_n to_o purchase_v a_o competency_n of_o thing_n worldly_a with_o prudence_n to_o manage_v and_o use_v the_o same_o aright_o together_o with_o cheerfulness_n in_o the_o use_n thereof_o which_o can_v be_v exclude_v here_o see_v the_o same_o be_v express_v before_o as_o subservient_fw-fr to_o that_o happiness_n which_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o world_n but_o main_o a_o increase_n of_o save_a knowledge_n which_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o two_o word_n because_o there_o be_v many_o degree_n of_o it_o and_o a_o increase_n of_o spiritual_a joy_n flow_v from_o the_o faith_n of_o acceptation_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n i_o say_v the_o word_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o increase_n of_o these_o thing_n because_o they_o be_v promise_v to_o the_o man_n who_o be_v bâ—fore_o favour_v and_o so_o have_v the_o first_o grace_n next_o as_o for_o the_o man_n who_o continue_v in_o his_o mistake_n concern_v the_o way_n to_o true_a happiness_n who_o he_o call_v here_o the_o sinner_n not_o 〈◊〉_d if_o the_o other_o former_o speak_v of_o or_o any_o other_o in_o the_o world_n do_v not_o deserve_v that_o name_n but_o because_o such_o a_o one_o be_v give_v up_o to_o the_o slavery_n and_o servitude_n of_o his_o lust_n in_o a_o unreconciled_a state_n as_o the_o word_n sinner_n often_o signify_v in_o scripture_n when_o it_o be_v oppose_v to_o the_o good_a or_o righteous_a 1_o pet._n 4_o 18_o and_o as_o the_o original_a word_n here_o signify_v one_o that_o err_v from_o the_o scope_n i_o e._n who_o be_v mistake_v in_o the_o main_n concern_v true_a happiness_n &_o be_v pursue_v the_o same_o in_o thing_n of_o this_o earth_n to_o such_o a_o one_o god_n give_v in_o his_o justice_n and_o displeasure_n as_o his_o sure_a portion_n if_o he_o continue_v in_o that_o way_n sore_a travel_n or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v painful_a servitude_n and_o slavery_n in_o gather_v and_o heap_v which_o word_n import_v he_o to_o be_v both_o successful_a and_o unsatisfy_v that_o which_o he_o must_v leave_v behind_o he_o to_o be_v possess_v by_o these_o for_o who_o he_o intend_v least_o even_o to_o one_o that_o be_v good_a in_o god_n sight_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o if_o every_o wicked_a man_n shall_v make_v some_o godly_a man_n his_o heir_n for_o then_o the_o godly_a shall_v be_v the_o rich_a in_o the_o world_n but_o that_o often_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o wicked_n pain_n redound_v to_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o godly_a or_o rather_o that_o his_o purchase_n and_o estate_n be_v at_o the_o lord_n disposal_n to_o give_v to_o who_o he_o please_v and_o think_v good_a enough_o for_o receive_v such_o trifle_n and_o this_o excessive_a pain_n of_o man_n for_o these_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v neither_o long_o enjoy_v nor_o transfer_v to_o other_o as_o they_o please_v he_o censure_v as_o vanity_n that_o be_v a_o sinful_a course_n and_o such_o as_o will_v in_o the_o end_n produce_v nothing_o but_o torment_n to_o man_n spirit_n hence_o learn_v 1._o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o lord_n large_a and_o comfortable_a allowance_n to_o his_o own_o shall_v move_v all_o to_o take_v they_o to_o his_o way_n of_o seek_v after_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o this_o allowance_n shall_v be_v much_o insist_v on_o by_o his_o servant_n and_o often_o view_v by_o people_n
that_o it_o be_v do_v that_o they_o may_v see_v themselves_o to_o be_v beast_n and_o so_o may_v loathe_v themselves_o and_o thank_v he_o that_o they_o be_v not_o destroy_v but_o preserve_v that_o they_o may_v seek_v mercy_n and_o a_o change_n of_o their_o nature_n 7._o what_o ever_o be_v discover_v to_o be_v the_o lord_n intention_n and_o aim_n in_o his_o dispensation_n his_o people_n ought_v to_o concur_v therewith_o by_o their_o serious_a desire_n and_o wish_n that_o it_o may_v be_v bring_v about_o thereby_o testify_v their_o approbation_n of_o his_o purpose_n as_o holy_a and_o good_a deprive_v they_o equal_o of_o the_o satisfaction_n and_o pleasure_n they_o take_v in_o sensual_a delight_n be_v common_a to_o both_o 2._o that_o death_n be_v alike_o certain_a to_o both_o 3._o that_o the_o breath_n or_o natural_a life_n of_o both_o be_v alike_o easy_o cut_v off_o and_o that_o in_o all_o these_o and_o the_o like_a respect_n man_n have_v no_o preeminency_n above_o the_o beast_n the_o consideration_n of_o these_o i_o say_v shall_v in_o reason_n powerful_o convince_v man_n of_o their_o brutishness_n in_o seek_v happiness_n in_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n common_a to_o they_o with_o beast_n such_o as_o the_o bearing_z down_o of_o other_o inferior_a to_o they_o the_o satisfy_n of_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o the_o like_a for_o these_o resemblance_n be_v here_o reckon_v out_o by_o solomon_n as_o so_o many_o argument_n to_o convince_v man_n of_o his_o brutishness_n in_o think_v himself_o happy_a for_o his_o power_n and_o place_n in_o the_o world_n without_o fellowship_n with_o god_n and_o live_v in_o his_o fear_n and_o obedience_n for_o that_o which_o befall_v the_o son_n of_o man_n befall_v the_o beast_n etc._n etc._n 9_o they_o that_o will_v deal_v effectual_o for_o convince_a sinner_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o their_o way_n will_v make_v use_n of_o such_o motive_n as_o probable_o may_v most_o prevail_v with_o they_o though_o these_o be_v not_o such_o as_o be_v of_o themselves_o the_o most_o cogent_a for_o solomon_n here_o be_v to_o convince_v man_n in_o power_n abuse_v the_o same_o of_o their_o brutish_a and_o beastly_a disposition_n do_v not_o specify_v the_o resemblance_n which_o may_v from_o scripture_n be_v condescend_v upon_o between_o the_o inward_a disposition_n and_o carriage_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n above_o the_o beast_n but_o take_v with_o reference_n to_o the_o resemblance_n here_o mention_v that_o man_n be_v neither_o exeme_v from_o several_a outward_a event_n nor_o from_o death_n itself_o it_o have_v a_o clear_a truth_n in_o it_o man_n have_v no_o preeminence_n in_o these_o and_o such_o as_o these_o above_o the_o beast_n 11._o when_o the_o emptiness_n of_o all_o create_a thing_n and_o humane_a endeavour_n about_o they_o in_o regard_n of_o any_o true_a contentment_n they_o can_v afford_v to_o a_o man_n spirit_n and_o their_o insufficiency_n to_o make_v he_o
