alteration_n of_o such_o and_o such_o motion_n requisite_a to_o continue_v its_o particular_a mechanism_n or_o animal_n oeconomy_n the_o body_n remain_v i_o mean_v all_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o after_o the_o division_n of_o its_o part_n and_o it_o can_v rational_o be_v suppose_v that_o the_o mind_n the_o more_o substantial_a and_o as_o all_o be_v ready_a to_o acknowledge_v the_o more_o noble_a part_n of_o man_n shall_v suffer_v more_o alteration_n by_o the_o dissolution_n of_o the_o body_n than_o the_o body_n itself_o do_v the_o change_n the_o body_n undergo_v be_v apparent_a but_o what_o change_v you_o will_v say_v may_v the_o mind_n be_v reasonnable_o suppose_v to_o suffer_v at_o its_o separation_n from_o the_o body_n or_o whether_o not_o enough_o to_o be_v call_v death_n many_o treatise_n have_v be_v write_v and_o discourse_n make_v to_o prove_v the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o some_o for_o its_o suppose_a mortality_n but_o the_o author_n have_v not_o be_v so_o happy_a as_o to_o agree_v in_o the_o notion_n of_o life_n and_o death_n with_o one_o another_o nor_o all_o so_o considerate_a as_o to_o fix_v any_o determinate_a notion_n for_o themselves_o or_o to_o tell_v their_o reader_n what_o they_o mean_v by_o its_o live_n or_o die_v so_o that_o it_o may_v be_v true_a or_o false_a for_o they_o but_o i_o shall_v here_o state_n the_o question_n more_o plain_o and_o tell_v you_o first_o that_o by_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n i_o mean_v a_o continuation_n of_o think_v or_o of_o understanding_n and_o willing_a where_o there_o be_v these_o action_n and_o passion_n there_o be_v enough_o to_o be_v call_v life_n and_o that_o which_o better_o deserve_v to_o be_v name_v live_v than_o any_o whatsoever_o organization_n and_o motion_n in_o body_n and_o the_o plain_a question_n be_v this_o whether_o upon_o the_o death_n or_o dissolution_n of_o the_o body_n think_v whole_o cease_v a_o cessation_n of_o some_o of_o the_o modes_n of_o think_v can_v be_v enough_o to_o be_v proper_o call_v the_o death_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o so_o it_o will_v not_o only_o be_v always_o die_v but_o dead_a as_o it_o alter_v so_o continual_o at_o least_o every_o night_n and_o day_n a_o alteration_n of_o some_o of_o the_o modes_n of_o think_v may_v in_o a_o figurative_a and_o improper_a sense_n be_v call_v death_n but_o the_o question_n be_v not_o of_o any_o such_o death_n it_o be_v probable_a that_o many_o if_o not_o all_o those_o thought_n and_o idea_n we_o have_v by_o occasion_n or_o on_o condition_n of_o our_o body_n as_o so_o and_o so_o dispose_v may_v cease_v though_o it_o can_v easy_o be_v think_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o we_o can_v conceive_v the_o body_n to_o be_v a_o natural_a occasion_n of_o any_o thought_n but_o so_o by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n who_o if_o he_o please_v we_o may_v well_o think_v can_v cause_v the_o same_o idea_n and_o thought_n without_o it_o though_o it_o seem_v not_o to_o any_o purpose_n or_o probable_a that_o he_o will_n for_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v more_o likely_a that_o god_n permit_v death_n for_o the_o cessation_n of_o those_o thought_n or_o at_o least_o many_o of_o they_o the_o body_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o since_o man_n fall_n into_o sin_n in_o good_a and_o bad_a for_o as_o much_o as_o we_o be_v tempt_v to_o most_o of_o our_o disorder_n by_o occasion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o to_o gratify_v some_o sense_n or_o other_o disorderly_a or_o beside_o the_o direction_n and_o will_n of_o god_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o first_o and_o most_o constant_a temptation_n every_o man_n be_v draw_v aside_o with_o now_o the_o good_a man_n or_o repent_v sinner_n through_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n on_o this_o supposition_n of_o such_o thought_n cease_v get_v this_o by_o death_n though_o in_o itself_o a_o evil_a that_o he_o be_v free_v from_o all_o the_o allurement_n of_o this_o life_n occasion_v by_o his_o use_n of_o this_o body_n the_o undue_a gratification_n of_o sense_n can_v now_o no_o more_o persuade_v he_o the_o unprofitable_a care_n of_o avoid_v little_a bodily_a displeasure_n now_o take_v not_o up_o his_o thought_n the_o difficulty_n from_o the_o injustice_n and_o cruelty_n of_o sinner_n press_v he_o now_o no_o more_o to_o act_v against_o his_o maker_n will_n but_o he_o seem_v perfect_o free_v from_o temptation_n have_v perhaps_o now_o no_o object_n of_o desire_n present_a but_o god_n and_o nothing_o to_o interpose_v for_o his_o love_n as_o a_o rival_n with_o his_o maker_n nothing_o now_o seem_v necessary_a for_o he_o to_o know_v but_o god_n and_o himself_o nor_o need_v he_o or_o value_v he_o can_v he_o have_v they_o any_o little_a pleasure_n in_o creature_n when_o he_o be_v at_o god_n the_o fountain_n and_o cause_n of_o all_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o evil_a man_n also_o lose_v all_o those_o gratification_n of_o sense_n he_o so_o much_o affect_v and_o er_o count_v his_o chief_a good_a and_o must_v needs_o find_v that_o he_o foolish_o set_v his_o heart_n on_o that_o which_o will_v not_o make_v he_o happy_a but_o so_o soon_o leave_v he_o and_o as_o his_o will_n be_v not_o reconcile_v and_o subject_v to_o god_n but_o he_o desire_v still_o that_o which_o can_v be_v god_n can_v so_o communicate_v himself_o to_o he_o to_o make_v he_o joyous_a but_o he_o must_v be_v subject_a to_o all_o that_o anguish_n that_o the_o reflection_n on_o the_o loss_n of_o the_o creature_n he_o so_o much_o delight_v in_o and_o that_o he_o have_v miss_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o good_a can_v cause_v in_o he_o with_o all_o the_o vexation_n and_o trouble_v that_o all_o the_o disorderly_a thought_n of_o such_o a_o soul_n can_v raise_v to_o itself_o but_o to_o come_v to_o the_o point_n in_o hand_n again_o it_o can_v well_o be_v think_v that_o the_o soul_n or_o mind_n of_o either_o good_a or_o bad_a shall_v die_v or_o think_v whole_o and_o for_o ever_o cease_v or_o yet_o for_o a_o time_n upon_o the_o body_n death_n because_o the_o continuation_n of_o think_v or_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n can_v rational_o be_v suppose_v to_o depend_v on_o the_o body_n a_o thing_n more_o ignoble_a than_o itself_o be_v very_o unlikely_a to_o be_v its_o cause_n but_o upon_o the_o will_n of_o god_n its_o author_n and_o god_n can_v well_o be_v suppose_v thus_o to_o let_v any_o of_o his_o creature_n cease_v or_o disow_v his_o work_n that_o be_v good_a as_o the_o being_n of_o all_o thing_n be_v much_o less_o can_v mind_n the_o intelligent_a and_o active_a being_n be_v think_v to_o be_v adnihilate_v or_o cease_v think_v so_o soon_o and_o to_o no_o purpose_n change_v they_o may_v and_o do_v as_o all_o creature_n be_v mutable_a but_o what_o of_o god_n will_v be_v see_v in_o the_o cessation_n of_o any_o especial_o of_o mind_n who_o be_v the_o only_a kind_n of_o being_n capable_a of_o behold_v god_n if_o the_o soul_n cease_v to_o think_v and_o so_o die_v more_o than_o a_o figurative_a death_n it_o cease_v to_o be_v for_o think_v and_o mind_n be_v the_o same_o be_v which_o if_o you_o will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o believe_v you_o must_v at_o least_o acknowledge_v they_o inseparable_a for_o a_o mind_n that_o do_v not_o think_v death_n can_v be_v assert_v so_o that_o if_o a_o soul_n cease_v to_o be_v and_o a_o soul_n be_v afterward_o it_o can_v be_v the_o same_o but_o a_o new_a one_o to_o who_o can_v be_v charge_v no_o account_n of_o the_o cease_v soul_n past_o action_n there_o must_v be_v a_o continuation_n of_o be_v or_o there_o can_v be_v no_o identity_n or_o sameness_n and_o the_o essential_o of_o the_o thing_n must_v remain_v or_o there_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n but_o another_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o continuation_n of_o think_v and_o conscience_n of_o former_a thought_n it_o can_v be_v conceive_v how_o the_o sameness_n of_o a_o mind_n can_v be_v ascertain_v and_o if_o a_o soul_n in_o this_o present_a state_n be_v wicked_a and_o cease_v at_o the_o dissolution_n of_o the_o body_n it_o can_v neither_o be_v just_a nor_o good_a that_o a_o new_a one_o shall_v be_v miserable_a because_o the_o cease_v soul_n be_v unrighteous_a nor_o be_v determine_v what_o new_a one_o shall_v be_v so_o nor_o that_o a_o soul_n penitent_a in_o this_o world_n shall_v not_o itself_o be_v happy_a hereafter_o but_o have_v its_o hope_n of_o future_a happiness_n utter_o frustrate_v and_o be_v put_v off_o with_o the_o mock-happiness_n of_o be_v happy_a in_o another_o soul_n what_o encouragement_n can_v i_o have_v to_o my_o duty_n if_o i_o suppose_v i_o must_v not_o continue_v to_o the_o perfection_n and_o happiness_n of_o my_o obedience_n but_o must_v perish_v and_o only_o now_o be_v content_v to_o think_v that_o god_n will_v create_v a_o soul_n hereafter_o and_o perhaps_o give_v it_o my_o dust_n to_o think_v it_o be_v apparent_a that_o the_o soul_n be_v immortal_a and_o that_o which_o be_v its_o proper_a or_o natural_a life_n viz._n think_v do_v not_o cease_v though_o to_o suppose_v the_o soul_n immortal_a of_o its_o own_o nature_n or_o that_o it_o be_v or_o have_v any_o thing_n in_o itself_o which_o necessary_o infer_v its_o continuance_n will_v be_v as_o great_a or_o a_o great_a error_n than_o to_o fancy_v it_o mortal_a for_o that_o will_v be_v to_o suppose_v it_o immortal_a as_o its_o author_n be_v but_o it_o can_v be_v suppose_v thus_o to_o be_v immortal_a for_o whatsoever_o have_v a_o beginning_n or_o have_v not_o be_v always_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v a_o end_n and_o cease_v to_o be_v such_o be_v all_o creature_n who_o will_v fall_v into_o nothing_o if_o god_n shall_v as_o our_o present_a business_n in_o find_v a_o divine_a be_v require_v what_o we_o be_v and_o because_o i_o have_v but_o now_o make_v mention_n of_o doubt_v and_o consider_v and_o find_v man_n so_o apt_a to_o doubt_v question_n and_o consider_v what_o we_o be_v as_o to_o our_o essence_n or_o be_v as_o well_o as_o of_o other_o thing_n i_o say_v we_o be_v doubter_n questioner_n considerer_n and_o supposer_n but_o what_o be_v doubt_v question_v suppose_v and_o consider_v it_o be_v think_v and_o that_o a_o imperfect_a think_v think_v that_o want_v something_o in_o which_o we_o find_v a_o incomplete_a defective_a understanding_n and_o a_o will_n or_o desire_v of_o something_o we_o have_v not_o now_o wherever_o be_v find_v any_o thing_n of_o ignorance_n in_o the_o understanding_n or_o any_o want_n of_o power_n in_o the_o will_n it_o appear_v that_o that_o be_v can_v in_o any_o wise_a be_v think_v to_o be_v of_o itself_o or_o selfsufficient_a but_o must_v consequential_o be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v dependent_a have_v some_o other_o be_v its_o cause_n for_o he_o that_o find_v himself_o insufficient_a to_o himself_o can_v in_o no_o wise_n be_v think_v to_o be_v sufficient_a more_o or_o other_o than_o these_o be_v not_o of_o the_o essence_n of_o a_o person_n or_o intelligent_a be_v those_o that_o make_v understanding_n and_o conscience_n two_o thing_n in_o god_n consider_v in_o himself_o call_v they_o two_o modes_n or_o relation_n or_o the_o like_a as_o some_o witty_a man_n have_v do_v have_v not_o consider_v the_o matter_n close_o for_o where_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o god_n and_o nothing_o else_o be_v necessary_a and_o eternal_a his_o know_a himself_o or_o conscience_n be_v the_o only_a necessary_a or_o essential_a understanding_n there_o be_v no_o be_v but_o a_o act_n of_o something_o else_o the_o agent_n or_o a_o attribute_n of_o something_o else_o the_o subject_a i_o answer_v first_o by_o demand_v what_o this_o more_o real_a and_o noble_a agent_n be_v what_o notion_n have_v we_o of_o it_o i_o have_v long_o try_v and_o can_v find_v nothing_o a_o object_n of_o my_o understanding_n but_o either_o think_v or_o body_n what_o other_o may_v
