bramble_n and_o brier_n against_o the_o barrenness_n and_o staruednesse_n of_o a_o curse_a earth_n which_o he_o must_v resist_v and_o overcome_v with_o the_o sweat_n of_o his_o brow_n yea_o each_o man_n eat_v other_o man_n though_o not_o with_o the_o tooth_n of_o the_o body_n yet_o with_o the_o jaw_n of_o a_o fraudulent_a overreach_v and_o violent_a soul_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v further_a misery_n wait_v upon_o mischief_n for_o beside_o visible_a and_o palpable_a example_n of_o sudden_a justice_n execute_v and_o send_v from_o heaven_n upon_o diverse_a eminent_a and_o outrageous_a crime_n we_o see_v in_o general_a that_o this_o sinful_a life_n at_o the_o best_a be_v but_o wise_a vanity_n pleasant_a vanity_n or_o glorious_a vanity_n and_o at_o the_o worst_a vexation_n of_o spirit_n vexation_n of_o body_n loss_n of_o good_n and_o loss_n of_o friend_n yea_o man_n be_v but_o a_o piece_n of_o reasonable_a misery_n he_o have_v reason_n to_o foresee_v misery_n and_o so_o to_o take_v it_o to_o his_o hart_n when_o reason_n can_v prevent_v it_o reason_n to_o foresee_v death_n but_o not_o to_o avoid_v it_o for_o as_o sure_a as_o wickedness_n be_v present_a so_o sure_o shall_v death_n be_v present_a for_o death_n and_o sin_n we_o see_v daily_o be_v in_o every_o man_n unseparable_a now_o the_o combine_v of_o sin_n and_o misery_n in_o this_o bodily_a life_n for_o this_o life_n concern_v the_o body_n most_o &_o the_o soul_n least_o and_o so_o do_v the_o misery_n of_o this_o life_n point_v our_o expectation_n to_o another_o life_n even_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o pursuit_n of_o punishment_n after_o sin_n in_o that_o life_n which_o be_v most_o proper_a to_o the_o soul_n &_o that_o then_o the_o bodily_a misery_n of_o this_o life_n shall_v be_v second_v with_o spiritual_a torment_n but_o if_o we_o leave_v these_o dark_a character_n of_o reason_n and_o experience_n and_o come_v to_o divine_a revelation_n there_o we_o may_v read_v run_v the_o fall_n and_o misery_n of_o man._n and_o these_o before_o be_v describe_v out_o of_o the_o same_o holy_a write_n but_o here_o again_o they_o must_v be_v consider_v by_o the_o learner_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o be_v good_a to_o be_v happy_a they_o think_v but_o it_o be_v not_o good_a to_o be_v too_o happy_a and_o therefore_o they_o will_v glad_o traffic_v some_o superstuous_a happi_n nesse_n for_o a_o therefore_o can_v make_v any_o voyage_n of_o advantage_n he_o that_o propose_v a_o end_n yet_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v but_o transitory_o or_o narrow_o good_a he_o can_v receive_v but_o a_o transitory_a and_o narrow_a advancement_n he_o that_o propose_v for_o a_o end_n a_o seem_a good_a but_o a_o real_a evil_n may_v by_o attain_v puff_n up_o his_o imagination_n but_o shall_v perfect_o happy_a and_o the_o more_o happy_a in_o degree_n as_o in_o more_o degree_n he_o do_v enjoy_v it_o but_o amid_o the_o infinite_a change_n of_o thing_n seem_o good_a how_o shall_v man_n find_v out_o that_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v true_o and_o perfect_o good_a it_o be_v indeed_o a_o impression_n of_o man_n nature_n to_o seek_v for_o good_a but_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o same_o most_o good_a but_o he_o that_o will_v serious_o inquire_v for_o true_a happiness_n must_v in_o his_o inquiry_n lie_v aside_o his_o body_n and_o the_o doctrine_n thereof_o and_o he_o must_v retire_v into_o his_o innermost_a and_o most_o secret_a closet_n of_o light_n and_o reason_n and_o there_o ask_v of_o his_o soul_n assure_v truth_n and_o resolution_n concern_v his_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_n yea_o because_o the_o darkness_n of_o a_o heavy_a and_o sensual_a body_n since_o the_o fall_n subject_a to_o corruption_n have_v much_o dim_v the_o light_n of_o the_o soul_n she_o have_v need_n to_o return_v to_o that_o uppermost_a light_n by_o which_o at_o first_o she_o be_v kindle_v thence_o to_o receive_v a_o second_o enlighten_v that_o by_o a_o addition_n of_o the_o high_a light_n she_o may_v find_v out_o her_o high_a &_o chief_a happiness_n the_o soul_n thus_o rectify_v labour_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n attain_v to_o behold_v thing_n in_o their_o truth_n as_o also_o to_o see_v the_o difference_n of_o thing_n confound_v or_o misorder_a by_o the_o ignorance_n of_o corruption_n and_o to_o place_v each_o thing_n in_o his_o due_a rank_n and_o consequent_o the_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_a far_o above_o all_o as_o indeed_o to_o the_o eye_n of_o wisdom_n it_o shine_v in_o a_o notable_a and_o manifest_a supereminence_n and_o as_o she_o give_v due_a acknowledgement_n to_o this_o good_a be_v discover_v so_o she_o call_v aloud_o to_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n to_o strive_v towards_o it_o be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v she_o advise_v they_o to_o set_v up_o their_o rest_n upon_o it_o to_o adventure_v all_o for_o it_o and_o never_o to_o leave_v labour_v until_o the_o soul_n and_o happiness_n be_v join_v together_o chap._n ii_o how_o that_o must_v be_v condition_v which_o be_v the_o end_n and_o happiness_n of_o man._n now_o if_o with_o such_o wise_a searcher_n of_o felicity_n we_o shall_v make_v the_o like_a enquiry_n examine_v all_o thing_n in_o their_o weight_n and_o worth_n we_o must_v needs_o meet_v in_o one_o truth_n truth_n be_v but_o one_o even_o a_o common_a centre_n in_o which_o all_o rectify_a understanding_n meet_v the_o more_o wise_a a_o man_n be_v the_o more_o possession_n have_v he_o of_o this_o truth_n and_o therefore_o whosoever_o can_v challenge_v to_o himself_o to_o be_v the_o wise_a of_o man_n he_o must_v also_o be_v the_o large_a discoverer_n of_o happiness_n and_o with_o he_o especial_o shall_v other_o wisdom_n meet_v even_o of_o necessity_n now_o that_o we_o firm_o ground_v our_o discovery_n let_v we_o first_o inquire_v what_o condition_n that_o thing_n must_v have_v which_o shall_v be_v the_o happiness_n of_o man._n that_o which_o shall_v make_v man_n happy_a must_v first_o be_v able_a to_o bestow_v on_o the_o manner_n how_o to_o please_v and_o serve_v god_n this_o very_a manner_n of_o his_o creation_n will_v teach_v he_o for_o the_o creator_n be_v a_o spirit_n himself_o and_o he_o give_v to_o man_n a_o spirit_n resemble_v he_o both_o in_o substance_n and_o faculty_n the_o substance_n be_v spiritual_a &_o the_o faculty_n a_o understanding_n and_o wil._n in_o the_o understanding_n be_v a_o light_n which_o can_v show_v unto_o man_n the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o inform_v man_n what_o be_v right_a in_o god_n understanding_n so_o be_v it_o a_o create_a revelation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o spark_n and_o piece_n whereof_o serve_v at_o this_o day_n both_o to_o inform_v and_o accuse_v the_o natural_a man_n now_o upon_o the_o understanding_n thus_o inform_v the_o will_n be_v ready_a to_o be_v such_o a_o aptness_n and_o ability_n of_o conformity_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o all_o thing_n be_v delight_v with_o harmony_n and_o conformity_n especial_o that_o pure_a essence_n which_o be_v vanity_n itself_o sure_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v but_o the_o chief_a pleasure_n and_o service_n most_o acceptable_a to_o the_o creator_n be_v when_o these_o low_a and_o lesser_a spirit_n do_v carry_v themselves_o &_o the_o body_n which_o they_o rule_v in_o a_o perpetual_a consent_n and_o conformity_n to_o that_o great_a spirit_n which_o make_v they_o and_o as_o man_n workmanship_n do_v thus_o show_v he_o his_o work_n so_o do_v it_o also_o his_o happiness_n towards_o the_o discovery_n hereof_o let_v we_o set_v down_o these_o rule_n first_o the_o most_o excellent_a happiness_n of_o man_n must_v be_v the_o happiness_n of_o man_n most_o excellent_a part_n second_o man_n chief_a part_n be_v a_o spirit_n the_o object_n of_o his_o happiness_n must_v be_v a_o spirit_n spirit_n enjoy_v spirit_n as_o body_n do_v body_n &_o chief_o the_o chief_a three_o this_o chief_a spirit_n be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v among_o the_o creature_n but_o must_v only_o be_v the_o creator_n for_o the_o creator_n must_v needs_o exceed_v all_o the_o spirit_n that_o issue_n from_o he_o as_o the_o high_a cause_n do_v his_o inferior_a effect_n and_o to_o this_o also_o conspire_v our_o merciful_a father_n leave_v this_o truth_n without_o a_o witness_n but_o by_o that_o great_a &_o reverend_a mystery_n of_o the_o sabbath_n he_o tell_v we_o outward_o what_o before_o he_o inward_o teach_v we_o even_o that_o god_n be_v our_o blessedness_n and_o that_o holiness_n be_v the_o way_n to_o he_o for_o god_n be_v say_v to_o have_v create_v the_o world_n in_o six_o day_n and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o dignity_n of_o god_n god_n choose_v to_o make_v his_o work_n distinct_o in_o six_o several_a day_n and_o in_o every_o day_n distinct_o consider_v the_o work_n which_o that_o day_n he_o have_v make_v and_o upon_o this_o distinct_a and_o several_a consideration_n he_o pronounce_v this_o sentence_n upon_o each_o day_n work_n that_o the_o work_n of_o that_o day_n be_v good_a yet_o he_o say_v only_o that_o it_o be_v good_a he_o say_v not_o that_o it_o be_v goodness_n it_o be_v good_a enough_o in_o his_o kind_n for_o service_n but_o not_o for_o happiness_n but_o the_o seven_o day_n he_o cease_v both_o from_o creation_n and_o this_o consideration_n of_o the_o good_a creature_n and_o withdraweth_a himself_o into_o himself_o he_o return_v from_o without_o to_o the_o enjoy_n of_o himself_o &_o his_o own_o rest_n and_o to_o the_o contemplation_n of_o this_o rest_n enjoy_v and_o there_o only_o he_o find_v &_o pronounce_v to_o be_v perfect_a holiness_n and_o perfect_a blessedness_n to_o make_v this_o know_v unto_o man_n god_n take_v this_o seven_o day_n wherein_o he_o retire_v to_o his_o rest_n and_o imprint_n on_o it_o the_o quality_n of_o his_o rest_n holiness_n and_o blessedness_n that_o the_o holiness_n and_o blessedness_n of_o that_o day_n may_v be_v a_o pattern_n to_o we_o of_o the_o holiness_n and_o blessedness_n which_o be_v in_o god_n that_o we_o read_v therein_o the_o blessedness_n of_o god_n may_v set_v our_o whole_a heart_n &_o desire_n thereon_o and_o read_v therein_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n may_v fit_v ourselves_o by_o holiness_n to_o his_o holiness_n which_o as_o it_o be_v inseparable_a from_o happiness_n in_o god_n so_o must_v it_o be_v also_o in_o all_o that_o will_v see_v good_a for_o nothing_o contrary_a or_o unlike_a to_o god_n may_v approach_v unto_o he_o thus_o the_o seven_o day_n crown_v by_o the_o employment_n of_o that_o day_n &_o the_o other_o six_o day_n leave_v unblessed_a by_o the_o work_n of_o those_o day_n by_o a_o manifest_a difference_n point_n unto_o we_o that_o the_o end_n and_o happiness_n of_o man_n be_v not_o to_o be_v seek_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o six_o day_n but_o in_o the_o bless_a holiness_n and_o holy_a blessedness_n of_o the_o seven_o and_o to_o the_o same_o truth_n the_o order_n of_o creation_n do_v likewise_o invite_v us._n for_o all_o creature_n be_v first_o make_v man_n be_v make_v after_o creature_n and_o so_o set_v before_o they_o as_o their_o end_n to_o who_o they_o shall_v look_v &_o who_o they_o shall_v serve_v but_o man_n be_v thus_o place_v as_o the_o righteousness_n and_o happiness_n and_o the_o evil_a of_o wickedness_n and_o misery_n yea_o in_o those_o very_a instinct_n which_o be_v leave_v as_o the_o principal_a guide_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o by_o which_o their_o state_n be_v continue_v and_o preserve_v and_o if_o such_o have_v not_o be_v leave_v mankind_n be_v yield_v up_o to_o the_o guide_n of_o his_o natural_a corruption_n must_v needs_o have_v decay_v and_o destroy_v itself_o even_o these_o instinct_n be_v exceed_o taint_v by_o this_o knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a natural_a instinct_n tell_v man_n that_o by_o woman_n succession_n be_v preserve_v and_o natural_a help_n maintain_v and_o that_o she_o that_o be_v thou_o be_v thyself_o lust_n come_v in_o with_o his_o doctrine_n often_o and_o say_v love_v one_o that_o thou_o have_v not_o for_o the_o good_a of_o variety_n and_o it_o be_v evil_a and_o fulsome_a to_o love_v but_o one_o though_o she_o be_v thy_o own_o flesh_n natural_a instinct_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v good_a to_o love_v our_o child_n and_o best_a the_o best_a lust_n come_v in_o many_o time_n and_o tell_v we_o it_o be_v good_a to_o love_v they_o better_o than_o ourselves_o to_o wrong_v ourselves_o &_o other_o to_o increase_v they_o and_o sometime_o to_o love_v that_o child_n best_o that_o deserve_v worst_a yea_o sometime_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v foolish_a and_o evil_a to_o debar_v ourselves_o from_o any_o excess_n or_o vanity_n for_o their_o sake_n and_o then_o the_o carelessness_n be_v as_o bad_a as_o the_o care_n be_v before_o natural_a instinct_n tell_v we_o there_o must_v be_v a_o order_n among_o man_n for_o their_o preservation_n that_o some_o must_v be_v the_o head_n and_o keeper_n of_o this_o order_n hence_o arise_v the_o necessity_n of_o king_n and_o state_n fleshly_a wisdom_n come_v in_o and_o tell_v many_o king_n they_o must_v rule_v man_n for_o their_o own_o pleasure_n and_o to_o satisfy_v their_o own_o sensual_a desire_n and_o the_o same_o wisdom_n tell_v many_o subject_n why_o shall_v you_o be_v subject_n to_o one_o of_o your_o kind_n and_o if_o so_o why_o not_o other_o to_o you_o as_o well_o as_o you_o to_o other_o thus_o be_v the_o new_a knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a like_o a_o bias_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o run_v awry_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o probitie_n and_o felicity_n and_o sure_o the_o philosopher_n trouble_v themselves_o much_o with_o the_o discovery_n of_o such_o a_o disease_n but_o neither_o know_v whence_o it_o come_v nor_o how_o to_o rid_v it_o away_o indeed_o they_o plod_v for_o remedy_n and_o to_o that_o purpose_n write_v of_o the_o end_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o frame_v their_o distinction_n of_o seem_v good_a and_o evil_a and_o true_a good_a and_o evil_a one_o of_o these_o prophet_n cry_v out_o there_o be_v no_o evil_a but_o what_o thou_o think_v to_o be_v evil_a and_o another_o say_v every_o man_n lust_n be_v his_o guide_n and_o another_o every_o man_n lust_n be_v his_o god_n but_o while_o they_o grope_v in_o the_o dark_a the_o daystar_n be_v rise_v upon_o we_o and_o have_v discover_v to_o we_o by_o the_o light_n thereof_o the_o true_a root_n of_o man_n corruption_n and_o how_o they_o first_o go_v out_o of_o the_o right_a path_n of_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a into_o the_o infinite_a by-path_n of_o a_o knowledge_n deceive_v and_o deceive_v thus_o these_o two_o tree_n of_o life_n and_o death_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o choice_n of_o man_n this_o choice_n and_o power_n of_o freewill_n which_o in_o itself_o be_v a_o excellent_a privilege_n yet_o to_o a_o solitary_a and_o unsupported_a creature_n it_o easy_o become_v a_o door_n unto_o misery_n for_o while_o man_n be_v leave_v to_o freewill_n he_o be_v leave_v to_o himself_o and_o himself_o be_v but_o a_o creature_n and_o a_o creature_n may_v be_v circumvent_v by_o another_o creature_n that_o exceed_v it_o both_o in_o cunning_n and_o power_n this_o know_v well_o those_o fall_v and_o corrupt_a creature_n the_o evil_a and_o deprave_a angel_n who_o be_v subtle_a and_o powerful_a in_o knowledge_n and_o withal_o malicious_a against_o happiness_n because_o themselves_o be_v miserable_a employ_v their_o cunning_a &_o power_n to_o the_o seduce_a of_o inferior_a man_n inferior_a because_o a_o spirit_n clothe_v &_o veil_a with_o dust._n the_o way_n which_o they_o choose_v be_v by_o conference_n wherein_o they_o make_v use_v of_o a_o visible_a creature_n and_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o conference_n be_v to_o bring_v man_n into_o jealousy_n of_o god_n their_o drift_n be_v to_o persuade_v man_n that_o the_o tree_n which_o be_v forbid_v to_o man_n be_v deny_v out_o of_o a_o envy_n of_o man_n preferment_n for_o there_o be_v in_o that_o tree_n say_v they_o such_o a_o supereminent_a knowledge_n that_o it_o can_v equal_v man_n with_o god_n and_o make_v man_n to_o become_v a_o god_n unto_o himself_o and_o lest_o fear_n shall_v be_v a_o hindrance_n to_o credulity_n the_o death_n which_o be_v threaten_v to_o follow_v be_v utter_o deny_v miserable_a man_n besiege_v with_o so_o strong_a a_o temptation_n for_o what_o resistance_n have_v man_n &_o glory_n but_o the_o new_a shame_n for_o which_o nakedness_n be_v now_o blame_v be_v the_o shame_n of_o the_o new_a lust_n which_o be_v not_o cause_v by_o nakedness_n but_o only_o discover_v nakedness_n excellent_o become_v glory_n for_o glory_n be_v the_o more_o glorious_a by_o be_v manifest_a &_o evident_a but_o shame_n become_v shameful_a by_o it_o and_o publish_v itself_o thereby_o to_o its_o own_o disgrace_n but_o this_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o shameful_a lust_n to_o come_v into_o nakedness_n which_o be_v the_o habit_n of_o glory_n and_o not_o as_o man_n foolish_o in_o his_o which_o be_v appoint_v to_o show_v forth_o man_n perfection_n in_o glory_n and_o as_o in_o this_o so_o in_o man_n whole_a course_n do_v this_o erroneous_a knowledge_n prevail_v and_o no_o marvel_n for_o the_o body_n be_v first_o guide_v by_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o image_n of_o god_n yea_o by_o god_n himself_o but_o now_o this_o lustful_a knowledge_n guide_v the_o body_n and_o the_o body_n for_o the_o most_o part_n tune_v and_o guide_v the_o soul_n thus_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man_n be_v reverse_a and_o deface_v he_o answer_v not_o he_o look_v not_o any_o long_o to_o god_n he_o neither_o love_v he_o neither_o be_v love_v of_o he_o man_n be_v become_v a_o stranger_n to_o god_n &_o god_n to_o man_n and_o hence_o it_o come_v that_o there_o be_v at_o this_o day_n such_o a_o multitude_n of_o foolish_a child_n that_o know_v not_o their_o own_o father_n and_o creator_n man_n be_v thus_o cut_v off_o from_o god_n his_o end_n and_o become_v his_o own_o god_n and_o end_n he_o be_v abase_v deform_v and_o whole_o overthrow_v by_o his_o new_a preferment_n he_o leave_v his_o true_a end_n and_o happiness_n when_o he_o will_v not_o bound_v himself_o within_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o creature_n but_o strive_v after_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o creator_n he_o lose_v both_o what_o he_o will_v have_v and_o what_o before_o he_o may_v have_v and_o now_o god_n and_o the_o law_n of_o god_n

the_o friendship_n and_o love_n of_o good_a man_n of_o man_n wise_a in_o the_o chief_a wisdom_n of_o man_n true_a &_o single_a in_o heart_n be_v the_o eminence_n of_o this_o eminent_a comfort_n then_o have_v we_o all_o this_o in_o the_o saint_n and_o son_n of_o god_n for_o these_o be_v our_o friend_n unto_o the_o death_n yea_o after_o death_n their_o love_n be_v more_o equal_a &_o stable_a than_o we_o match_n into_o the_o best_a family_n in_o the_o world_n the_o family_n of_o saint_n even_o a_o household_n of_o love_n of_o faith_n of_o holiness_n and_o of_o happiness_n beside_o by_o our_o union_n with_o christ_n we_o have_v a_o new_a right_n in_o the_o creature_n we_o be_v disinherit_v by_o the_o fault_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n and_o no_o part_n of_o our_o father_n good_n belong_v unto_o we_o so_o the_o use_n of_o god_n creature_n be_v a_o very_a robbery_n of_o god_n for_o it_o carry_v a_o mere_a absurdity_n that_o they_o who_o life_n be_v a_o continual_a enmity_n against_o
