it_o will_v not_o only_o be_v fit_a to_o serve_v the_o soul_n in_o some_o few_o but_o in_o all_o the_o business_n which_o shall_v be_v require_v of_o it_o and_o be_v not_o more_o helpful_a in_o one_o or_o some_o of_o the_o low_a whilst_o it_o prove_v a_o encumbrance_n and_o impediment_n in_o the_o high_o and_o great_a operation_n and_o this_o not_o only_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o present_a but_o to_o the_o long_a time_n now_o all_o this_o require_v both_o a_o good_a presence_n of_o mind_n and_o great_a exactness_n of_o thought_n it_o suppose_v observation_n and_o remembrance_n of_o what_o be_v past_a and_o a_o diligent_a calculate_v and_o exact_a weigh_v both_o of_o the_o state_n of_o his_o own_o body_n and_o also_o of_o his_o condition_n in_o the_o world_n nor_o must_v he_o only_o consider_v himself_o but_o other_o his_o wife_n and_o child_n and_o the_o poor_a for_o he_o that_o allow_v himself_o all_o that_o may_v conduce_v to_o the_o good_a plight_n of_o his_o own_o body_n without_o consideration_n of_o his_o family_n and_o kindred_n without_o regard_n to_o the_o urge_v necessity_n of_o poor_a stranger_n he_o be_v excessive_a in_o his_o self-gratification_n indeed_o whosoever_o consider_v how_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v think_v of_o and_o compare_v before_o a_o man_n can_v wise_o determine_v himself_o to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o do_v not_o only_o in_o this_o but_o in_o many_o other_o instance_n even_o all_o that_o he_o be_v to_o do_v in_o his_o whole_a life_n will_v easy_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o great_a care_n and_o exactness_n of_o great_a caution_n and_o circumspection_n on_o these_o and_o such_o like_a account_n how_o easy_a be_v it_o for_o a_o man_n to_o go_v beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o any_o virtue_n nay_o how_o hard_o be_v it_o not_o to_o do_v this_o when_o he_o intend_v temperance_n not_o to_o fall_v into_o a_o unreasonable_a unnatural_a denial_n of_o himself_o in_o those_o gratification_n which_o be_v not_o only_o allowable_a but_o commondable_a and_o lest_o he_o shall_v indulge_v himself_o in_o sensual_a excess_n he_o will_v obstain_v from_o those_o entertainment_n which_o be_v natural_a and_o innocent_a and_o if_o not_o necessary_a yet_o very_o convenient_a and_o useful_a again_o how_o hard_o be_v it_o not_o to_o slip_v out_o of_o a_o just_a indignation_n and_o displeasure_n at_o some_o miscarriage_n and_o offence_n into_o a_o immoderate_a over_o vehement_a anger_n and_o a_o unbecoming_a fury_n and_o rage_n how_o difficult_a be_v it_o to_o say_v thus_o far_o i_o may_v and_o shall_v he_o angry_a and_o beyond_o this_o i_o will_v not_o go_v and_o to_o keep_v to_o this_o resolution_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n whilst_o a_o man_n be_v but_o lay_v fit_a restraint_n on_o this_o passion_n how_o apt_a be_v he_o to_o fall_v into_o stupidity_n and_o a_o unactive_a dulness_n which_o have_v a_o semblance_n of_o mildness_n and_o neither_o be_v move_v in_o himself_o nor_o yet_o use_v that_o discipline_n to_o other_o which_o nature_n and_o justice_n require_v i_o may_v observe_v the_o same_o in_o all_o other_o virtue_n there_o be_v a_o great_a vicinity_n and_o nearness_n betwixt_o they_o and_o vice_n the_o heathen_a moralist_n have_v place_v almost_o all_o virtue_n in_o the_o midst_n between_o two_o vice_n and_o the_o difference_n they_o have_v make_v another_o virtuous_o humble_a when_o indeed_o he_o think_v untrue_o so_o liberality_n and_o magnificence_n and_o a_o vain_a profuseness_n may_v be_v mistake_v for_o each_o other_o and_o whilst_o a_o man_n be_v sacrifice_v to_o vanity_n and_o throw_v away_o his_o money_n out_o of_o ostentation_n and_o a_o lavish_a humour_n he_o may_v think_v himself_o liberal_a and_o magnificent_a if_o he_o do_v not_o exact_o observe_v 2._o i_o may_v also_o persuade_v the_o same_o from_o the_o tendency_n there_o be_v in_o some_o good_a action_n to_o that_o which_o be_v very_o evil_a insomuch_o that_o if_o we_o do_v not_o set_v a_o very_a strict_a watch_n over_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v begin_v in_o a_o very_a good_a and_o commendable_a work_n but_o end_n in_o a_o very_a ill_a one_o we_o shall_v slip_v it_o be_v that_o which_o though_o i_o be_o occasional_o fall_v into_o the_o mention_n of_o yet_o i_o can_v hardly_o forbear_v to_o persuade_v all_o man_n to_o enter_v into_o and_o to_o preserve_v consistent_a with_o the_o service_n and_o advancement_n of_o the_o high_a and_o best_a life_n which_o be_v the_o divine_a life_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o in_o this_o state_n depend_v on_o the_o life_n of_o the_o animal_n in_o we_o if_o it_o be_v think_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v preserve_v ourselves_o because_o of_o that_o self-love_n that_o be_v natural_a to_o we_o for_o that_o sometime_o these_o inclination_n clash_n they_o can_v all_o be_v gratify_v and_o that_o nature_n scholar_n have_v no_o direction_n in_o this_o case_n here_o be_v several_a thing_n which_o god_n will_v but_o what_o shall_v be_v do_v where_o there_o be_v a_o competition_n i_o answer_v that_o which_o every_o man_n reason_n will_v direct_v he_o 1._o be_v sure_a there_o be_v a_o contrariety_n betwixt_o a_o inconsistency_n of_o these_o natural_a inclination_n with_o each_o other_o that_o the_o same_o live_a creature_n man_n himself_o can_v be_v preserve_v and_o continue_v as_o it_o be_v if_o he_o become_v serviceable_a to_o the_o public_a if_o these_o can_v both_o be_v let_v they_o if_o they_o can_v 2._o let_v it_o be_v in_o this_o as_o in_o all_o other_o case_n it_o be_v let_v the_o be_v keep_v entire_a for_o which_o state_n one_o will_v think_v it_o be_v make_v be_v so_o whole_a and_o one_o in_o itself_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v by_o the_o skilful_a husbandman_n throw_v into_o the_o ground_n where_o it_o rot_v and_o die_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o a_o little_a time_n and_o so_o the_o grain_n seem_v lose_v but_o yet_o afterward_o it_o sprout_n and_o multiply_v itself_o into_o abundance_n perhaps_o sixty_o or_o a_o hundred_o this_o may_v teach_v we_o not_o to_o be_v so_o careful_a of_o our_o own_o particular_a being_n when_o by_o the_o give_v they_o up_o we_o may_v do_v a_o far_o great_a good_a again_o by_o nature_n as_o i_o have_v say_v we_o be_v incline_v to_o seek_v after_o pleasure_n but_o yet_o by_o nature_n also_o i._n e._n by_o brute_n animal_n that_o seem_v to_o regard_v only_o what_o be_v present_a we_o be_v instruct_v to_o lay_v aside_o our_o pleasure_n when_o by_o that_o we_o may_v procure_v some_o better_a or_o more_o last_v or_o publick-good_a than_o that_o our_o pleasure_n will_v be_v so_o do_v the_o old_a bird_n abstain_v from_o abundance_n of_o particular_a gratification_n to_o hatch_v and_o feed_v their_o young_a that_o be_v they_o be_v more_o please_v with_o a_o public_a than_o a_o particular_a good_n and_o how_o common_a be_v it_o with_o we_o to_o cut_v off_o a_o part_n to_o save_v the_o whole_a but_o if_o natural_a reason_n unassisted_a by_o revelation_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o direct_v we_o in_o this_o yet_o by_o the_o help_n of_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v full_o furnish_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o what_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o do_v where_o there_o be_v a_o competition_n of_o one_o natural_a desire_n with_o another_o more_o particular_o whosoever_o consider_v the_o humane_a nature_n which_o be_v the_o top_n of_o god_n workmanship_n in_o this_o low_a world_n beside_o these_o affection_n which_o we_o have_v hitherto_o take_v notice_n of_o common_a to_o all_o animal_n he_o will_v discover_v some_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o particular_o find_v in_o man_n which_o will_v show_v he_o what_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v some_o of_o which_o be_v these_o follow_v 1._o that_o man_n be_v a_o compound_v be_v make_v up_o of_o very_a many_o part_n and_o faculty_n and_o those_o of_o very_a different_a nature_n and_o for_o divers_a uses_n the_o two_o to_o which_o all_o the_o other_o be_v reduceable_a be_v his_o body_n and_o his_o mind_n that_o have_v very_o various_a part_n and_o member_n this_o contain_v two_o illustrious_a faculty_n the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will._n now_o whosoever_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o he_o can_v but_o conclude_v if_o he_o suppose_v the_o creator_n wise_a that_o he_o do_v design_n and_o do_v will_n that_o all_o these_o faculty_n and_o part_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o the_o use_v for_o which_o they_o be_v fit_a that_o they_o shall_v neither_o be_v unemployed_a nor_o yet_o divert_v from_o their_o proper_a employment_n and_o use_v divine_a grace_n and_o our_o co-operation_n have_v often_o come_v to_o pass_v but_o yet_o every_o one_o be_v sensible_a of_o such_o a_o mutual_a dependence_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n that_o the_o good_a or_o bad_a state_n of_o the_o one_o ordinary_o have_v influence_n on_o the_o other_o and_o this_o show_v plain_o that_o he_o who_o make_v we_o so_o intend_v and_o will_n that_o not_o one_o but_o both_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v regard_v that_o when_o we_o design_v the_o welfare_n of_o one_o we_o shall_v not_o look_v on_o that_o as_o divide_v from_o but_o as_o unite_a with_o the_o single_o 3._o the_o soul_n or_o mind_n be_v confess_v to_o be_v more_o excellent_a than_o the_o body_n and_o every_o one_o who_o think_v a_o man_n have_v pre-eminence_n over_o a_o beast_n will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o it_o be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v superior_a for_o though_o the_o spirit_n use_v the_o ministration_n of_o the_o body_n yet_o in_o abundance_n of_o instance_n it_o govern_v and_o dispose_v of_o it_o as_o it_o please_v and_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o the_o mind_n be_v not_o make_v to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o body_n but_o the_o body_n to_o it_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v to_o or_o from_o it_o for_o or_o against_o it_o this_o be_v the_o cardo_n or_o hinge_v on_o which_o all_o our_o frame_n turn_v the_o first_o spring_n of_o all_o our_o motion_n the_o primum_fw-la mobile_n in_o man_n as_o all_o man_n acknowledge_v by_o their_o practice_n for_o when_o they_o will_v engage_v themselves_o or_o other_o to_o any_o undertake_n they_o show_v its_o goodness_n or_o when_o they_o will_v take_v they_o off_o from_o it_o they_o make_v it_o appear_v evil_a which_o practice_n plain_o suppose_v that_o we_o all_o believe_v man_n determine_v himself_o according_a as_o his_o will_n shall_v be_v conformable_a to_o and_o guide_v by_o his_o understanding_n and_o in_o particular_a that_o he_o shall_v will_n and_o do_v good_a that_o all_o he_o do_v shall_v be_v good_a for_o else_o why_o shall_v he_o frame_v he_o so_o as_o that_o he_o can_v will_v nothing_o but_o what_o appear_v to_o he_o under_o that_o colour_n and_o why_o do_v he_o so_o form_v the_o human_a understanding_n that_o some_o thing_n and_o action_n be_v by_o all_o thought_n good_a and_o evil_a but_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o full_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o god_n who_o make_v we_o will_n that_o we_o shall_v love_v and_o do_v all_o good_a and_o hate_n and_o shun_v all_o evil_a if_o we_o make_v a_o near_a inspection_n into_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n for_o we_o may_v observe_v not_o only_o a_o unalterable_a inclination_n to_o do_v that_o which_o we_o think_v to_o be_v on_o one_o account_n or_o other_o good_a but_o 5._o also_o a_o very_a earnest_a desire_n and_o care_n to_o know_v more_o perfect_o what_o be_v and_o all_o that_o be_v good_a or_o evil._n no_o man_n be_v willing_a to_o be_v ignorant_a or_o mistake_v and_o he_o be_v nowhere_a more_o careful_a of_o true_a understanding_n than_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o good_a and_o evil._n that_o natural_a desire_n of_o perfection_n which_o be_v common_a to_o all_o thing_n do_v exert_v itself_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n in_o this_o particular_a and_o if_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o man_n that_o he_o do_v natural_o and_o necessary_o perceive_v some_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a and_o evil_a and_o by_o a_o easy_a and_o natural_a ratiocination_n will_v discover_v other_o and_o if_o he_o go_v on_o to_o perfection_n which_o all_o desire_n and_o tend_v to_o he_o will_v attain_v to_o a_o clear_a and_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o if_o it_o be_v unnatural_a for_o he_o to_o will_n without_o or_o against_o all_o understanding_n then_o we_o must_v conclude_v that_o his_o wise_a lord_n will_v that_o he_o shall_v do_v all_o that_o be_v good_n 6._o this_o will_v further_o appear_v if_o we_o consider_v the_o account_n to_o which_o man_n call_v themselves_o for_o their_o excuse_v and_o approve_v the_o good_a to_o censure_v and_o condemn_v the_o evil_a will_v that_o all_o he_o do_v shall_v be_v good_a love_n of_o good_a seem_v to_o be_v the_o supreme_a of_o all_o our_o passion_n that_o to_o which_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o affection_n lead_v and_o in_o which_o all_o our_o faculty_n terminate_v from_o which_o all_o our_o other_o passion_n issue_n and_o by_o which_o the_o mind_n govern_v the_o body_n and_o be_v govern_v itself_o and_o the_o great_a and_o better_a the_o good_a be_v the_o more_o natural_o it_o be_v love_v therefore_o as_o we_o have_v show_v that_o according_a to_o natural_a order_n this_o good_a of_o the_o mind_n ought_v to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o good_a of_o the_o body_n so_o that_o which_o be_v right_a and_o fit_a and_o become_v before_o any_o other_o good_a of_o the_o mind_n that_o be_v the_o moral_a before_o the_o natural_a for_o the_o one_o be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o other_o this_o subordination_n and_o subserviency_n which_o be_v so_o conspicuous_a among_o our_o several_a faculty_n show_v we_o that_o it_o be_v god_n will_n that_o we_o shall_v thus_o reduce_v ourselves_o out_o of_o that_o ataxy_n and_o conftssion_n into_o which_o sin_n have_v bring_v we_o into_o that_o excellent_a harmony_n and_o serviceableness_n of_o one_o faculty_n to_o another_o and_o of_o all_o to_o the_o supreme_a that_o we_o shall_v assert_v the_o mind_n superiority_n over_o the_o body_n and_o as_o to_o what_o be_v principal_a in_o the_o mind_n viz._n the_o love_n of_o what_o be_v fit_a and_o become_a that_o all_o the_o rest_n shall_v be_v bring_v under_o subjection_n to_o it_o i_o may_v now_o proceed_v to_o abundance_n of_o particular_n but_o that_o they_o will_v detain_v i_o too_o long_o on_o this_o argument_n it_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o my_o purpose_n in_o general_n that_o whosoever_o consider_v the_o various_a faculty_n of_o man_n and_o the_o order_n and_o reference_n they_o have_v to_o each_o other_o the_o many_o inclination_n and_o appetite_n and_o capacity_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o the_o operation_n which_o do_v necessary_o flow_v from_o they_o and_o will_v allow_v that_o the_o exercise_n and_o perfection_n of_o and_o keep_v due_a order_n among_o these_o natural_a faculty_n the_o follow_v these_o inclination_n and_o the_o gratification_n of_o these_o appetite_n the_o fill_v up_o these_o capacity_n the_o do_v these_o action_n which_o necessary_o follow_v nature_n be_v the_o will_n of_o our_o creator_n as_o they_o must_v be_v unless_o he_o have_v make_v thing_n in_o vain_a that_o be_v relation_n he_o be_v in_o to_o inferior_a animal_n and_o other_o being_n we_o shall_v present_o discover_v what_o kind_n of_o behaviour_n become_v he_o on_o all_o these_o account_n i._n e._n what_o be_v best_a and_o therefore_o fit_a for_o such_o a_o one_o in_o such_o circumstance_n to_o do_v and_o consequent_o what_o be_v the_o will_n of_o the_o wise_a and_o good_a maker_n and_o governor_n thus_o we_o have_v discover_v god_n will_n that_o we_o shall_v do_v good_a not_o only_o from_o a_o consideration_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n to_o which_o goodness_n be_v essential_a but_o likewise_o from_o a_o view_n of_o the_o nature_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o which_o be_v
natural_a to_o man_n which_o be_v corruptive_a of_o man_n this_o be_v a_o false_a notion_n we_o must_v not_o look_v on_o ourselves_o as_o mere_o passive_a 2._o we_o must_v not_o take_v up_o with_o inadequate_a thought_n of_o ourselves_o so_o as_o to_o take_v a_o part_n for_o the_o whole_a to_o think_v that_o we_o be_v nothing_o but_o body_n lead_v we_o into_o sensuality_n and_o a_o study_n to_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v prone_a to_o turn_v either_o brutish_a or_o monkish_a 3._o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o know_v our_o whole_a self_n but_o we_o must_v rid_v our_o mind_n of_o confuse_a imaginable_a into_o any_o state_n if_o any_o man_n may_v thrust_v himself_o into_o what_o office_n he_o please_v for_o man_n ambition_n will_v lead_v they_o to_o desire_v those_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o be_v no_o way_n fit_v and_o divers_a will_v be_v aim_v at_o the_o same_o which_o will_v therefore_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a contention_n to_o prevent_v this_o our_o saviour_n have_v show_v religion_n in_o short_a they_o have_v go_v before_o we_o in_o all_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n and_o goodness_n but_o over_o and_o above_o and_o which_o be_v more_o than_o all_o these_o we_o have_v upon_o sure_a record_n the_o most_o admirable_a pattern_n of_o goodness_n that_o ever_o the_o world_n see_v in_o the_o most_o excellent_a life_n of_o our_o most_o bless_a lord_n there_o be_v holiness_n in_o perfection_n and_o virtue_n in_o its_o most_o exalt_a state_n there_o we_o see_v the_o utmost_a possibility_n of_o goodness_n to_o which_o human_a nature_n can_v be_v raise_v on_o this_o earth_n this_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o great_a example_n serve_v to_o instruct_v our_o ignorance_n to_o quicken_v our_o dulness_n and_o to_o encourage_v our_o faint_n and_o there_o be_v those_o who_o shine_v as_o light_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o darkness_n of_o this_o earth_n there_o be_v many_o who_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n have_v teach_v to_o live_v sober_o and_o righteous_o and_o godly_a who_o keep_v their_o appetite_n and_o passion_n under_o due_a restraint_n and_o good_a government_n so_o that_o they_o be_v harmless_a in_o their_o conversation_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o they_o live_v to_o the_o good_a purpose_n of_o promote_a their_o own_o and_o other_o man_n good_a estate_n and_o welfare_n i_o have_v now_o brief_o touch_v upon_o the_o privilege_n man_n do_v or_o may_v receive_v by_o be_v member_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n but_o i_o have_v not_o in_o my_o discourse_n observe_v the_o method_n which_o i_o intend_v because_o i_o will_v be_v and_o goodness_n of_o many_o of_o its_o member_n whether_o we_o look_v on_o the_o engagement_n lay_v upon_o they_o in_o their_o first_o admission_n into_o the_o church_n or_o the_o admirable_a order_n and_o government_n of_o it_o or_o the_o incomparable_o good_a law_n which_o be_v give_v to_o all_o its_o member_n or_o the_o proper_a and_o wholesome_a discipline_n which_o be_v use_v in_o it_o or_o of_o detain_v i_o from_o such_o a_o employment_n of_o my_o understanding_n or_o other_o faculty_n as_o be_v more_o necessary_a so_o also_o delight_n in_o or_o endeavour_v after_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a good_a may_v have_v hinder_v i_o from_o do_v more_o or_o great_a good_n but_o from_o all_o this_o i_o observe_v that_o all_o the_o prejudice_n that_o be_v do_v i_o come_v to_o this_o that_o i_o be_o hinder_v from_o more_o knowledge_n or_o from_o delight_n in_o and_o do_v more_o good_n now_o i_o shall_v escape_v this_o danger_n if_o i_o aim_v at_o all_o the_o knowledge_n i_o be_o man_n all_o which_o be_v sum_v up_o in_o love_n and_o goodwill_n 3._o in_o that_o joy_n and_o peace_n that_o tranquillity_n and_o satisfaction_n which_o be_v the_o companion_n of_o a_o understanding_n so_o enlighten_v and_o a_o will_v so_o direct_v 4._o that_o be_v a_o good_a state_n and_o temper_n of_o body_n which_o will_v not_o obstruct_v and_o hinder_v but_o assist_v and_o be_v instrumental_a religion_n towards_o god_n or_o our_o charity_n to_o man_n and_o minister_v to_o our_o devotion_n and_o virtue_n as_o a_o competent_a estate_n and_o a_o clear_a reputation_n have_v a_o aptitude_n to_o do_v all_o that_o be_v good_a to_o man_n in_o any_o respect_n must_v be_v either_o subservient_fw-fr or_o at_o least_o consistent_a with_o this_o therefore_o a_o gratification_n of_o the_o sensitive_a
