deal_n of_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n the_o terror_n and_o harshness_n of_o the_o old_a administration_n be_v take_v away_o now_o these_o be_v the_o meditation_n by_o which_o we_o shall_v their_o fin_n and_o their_o spirit_n be_v in_o a_o discontent_a froward_a humour_n because_o they_o have_v not_o that_o comfort_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n and_o therefore_o the_o word_n of_o god_n when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v preach_v to_o they_o if_o it_o do_v not_o every_o way_n suit_n with_o their_o heart_n and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o find_v present_a comfort_n by_o it_o their_o spirit_n be_v in_o a_o distemper_n and_o frowardness_n and_o cast_v it_o off_o and_o if_o at_o any_o time_n there_o be_v never_o such_o comfortable_a thing_n speak_v in_o the_o word_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o anger_n in_o their_o spirit_n because_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o apply_v the_o word_n to_o themselves_o and_o they_o think_v this_o do_v not_o concern_v i_o now_o there_o shall_v be_v meekness_n of_o spirit_n in_o those_o that_o be_v in_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n above_o all_o they_o shall_v quiet_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n and_o wait_v for_o the_o time_n that_o god_n will_v speak_v peace_n to_o their_o conscience_n and_o if_o i_o can_v find_v the_o word_n suitable_a to_o i_o at_o this_o time_n yet_o i_o may_v at_o another_o time_n let_v i_o attend_v with_o meekness_n let_v i_o receive_v everything_o with_o meekness_n the_o word_n be_v above_o i_o and_o if_o ever_o i_o have_v good_a it_o must_v be_v by_o the_o word_n at_o last_o it_o do_v much_o concern_v those_o that_o be_v of_o the_o law_n as_o nigh_o one_o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n i_o answer_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n you_o hear_v it_o in_o your_o ear_n but_o it_o be_v not_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o law_n can_v work_v saving_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o bring_v salvation_n those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o can_v hear_v the_o gospel_n in_o a_o evangellicall_a way_n that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o you_o but_o what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o other_o say_v not_o who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n &_o c_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v the_o truth_n be_v while_o you_o have_v no_o other_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n you_o be_v at_o a_o infinite_a uncertainty_n about_o your_o eternal_a estate_n the_o law_n say_v do_v and_o live_v but_o you_o can_v never_o know_v when_o heaven_n or_o hell_n as_o you_o that_o be_v merchant_n and_o dealer_n abroad_o you_o be_v at_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o uncertainty_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o your_o estate_n indeed_o if_o i_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n of_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n in_o deed_n the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o appoint_v for_o the_o beget_n now_o in_o that_o respect_n the_o word_n be_v above_o the_o sacrament_n but_o now_o this_o sacrament_n be_v a_o more_o full_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o therefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v hunger_a and_o thirst_a desire_n of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n therefore_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o come_v with_o your_o stomach_n full_a of_o trash_n as_o child_n when_o they_o can_v get_v plum_n and_o pear_n and_o fill_v their_o stomach_n with_o they_o when_o they_o come_v to_o your_o table_n though_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o wholesome_a diet_n they_o have_v no_o mind_n at_o all_o to_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o man_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fill_v their_o heart_n with_o the_o trash_n of_o this_o world_n and_o with_o sensual_a delight_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o such_o a_o great_a ordinance_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n that_o then_o they_o feel_v no_o want_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n only_o they_o come_v and_o take_v a_o little_a piece_n of_o bread_n and_o a_o draught_n of_o wine_n but_o for_o any_o strong_a pause_v desire_n to_o meet_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o in_o the_o ordinance_n to_o come_v so_o as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o live_v without_o christ_n even_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o hunger_v
can_v live_v without_o his_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o so_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o have_v such_o a_o disposition_n after_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n but_o know_v that_o god_n name_n be_v not_o sanctify_v unless_o thou_o do_v come_v in_o such_o a_o way_n unto_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n hungry_a and_o thirsty_a desire_n after_o christ_n from_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o the_o need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o excellency_n in_o he_o 5._o in_o the_o five_o place_n there_o must_v be_v a_o exercise_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o here_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discern_v the_o body_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n if_o thou_o come_v only_o with_o bodily_a eye_n to_o look_v upon_o what_o be_v here_o thou_o see_v nothing_o but_o a_o little_a bread_n and_o wine_n but_o now_o where_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n be_v there_o be_v a_o real_a appearance_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o christ_n be_v bodily_a present_n and_o we_o need_v not_o have_v the_o bread_n turn_v into_o his_o body_n for_o faith_n can_v see_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n through_o the_o bread_n and_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n gush_v in_o the_o wine_n and_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a thing_n to_o have_v christ_n and_o such_o spiritual_a thing_n make_v real_a and_o not_o to_o be_v a_o fancy_n if_o one_o look_v upon_o the_o fire_n that_o be_v paint_v one_o can_v heat_v one_o self_n in_o cold_a weather_n with_o that_o but_o fire_n that_o be_v real_o burn_v upon_o the_o hearth_n so_o those_o that_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o not_o come_v with_o faith_n that_o have_v only_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o body_n they_o only_o see_v as_o it_o be_v a_o paint_a christ_n they_o do_v not_o see_v christ_n real_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n and_o those_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o present_v as_o real_a thing_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o go_v away_o and_o get_v nothing_o but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n the_o soul_n see_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o god_n it_o be_v the_o most_o glorious_a sight_n in_o the_o world_n all_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v not_o like_o this_o sight_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o do_v appear_v to_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n therefore_o you_o may_v by_o this_o know_v whether_o you_o have_v come_v with_o faith_n or_o no_o to_o the_o sacrament_n whether_o you_o have_v see_v the_o soul_n work_v in_o close_v with_o christ_n as_o thy_o soul_n do_v then_o in_o close_v with_o christ_n so_o it_o must_v now_o renew_v the_o work_n there_o must_v be_v a_o renewall_n of_o the_o work_n at_o that_o time_n so_o that_o when_o you_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o it_o be_v then_o a_o time_n to_o listen_v to_o doubt_n fear_n and_o scruple_n no_o but_o it_o be_v a_o time_n that_o god_n call_v for_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n the_o cast_n of_o the_o soul_n upon_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n or_o else_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v not_o sanctify_v as_o it_o ought_v thou_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n when_o thou_o be_v busy_v thy_o foul_a in_o doubt_n and_o scruple_n in_o thy_o receive_n of_o the_o take_v in_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o know_v that_o without_o faith_n thy_o soul_n can_v take_v in_o christ_n faith_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o mouth_n that_o be_v by_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n the_o soul_n do_v open_v itself_o for_o jesus_n christ_n and_o not_o only_o open_v itself_o but_o take_v in_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v christ_n and_o the_o soul_n as_o one_o as_o our_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v make_v one_o with_o our_o body_n so_o faith_n take_v in_o christ_n and_o make_v he_o as_o one_o with_o thou_o and_o turn_v christ_n into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o thy_o foul_a and_o thou_o and_o christ_n by_o faith_n be_v make_v as_o true_o one_o as_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n that_o be_v put_v into_o thy_o body_n be_v make_v one_o with_o thy_o body_n this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n without_o which_o we_o can_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n six_o there_o must_v be_v spiritual_a joy_n that_o must_v be_v exercise_v here_o for_o it_o be_v a_o feast_n here_o we_o come_v to_o sit_v with_o christ_n at_o his_o table_n we_o come_v as_o child_n to_o our_o father_n table_n and_o to_o sit_v there_o with_o jesus_n christ_n our_o elder_a brother_n now_o as_o a_o father_n do_v not_o love_n to_o have_v his_o child_n set_v in_o a_o sullen_a and_o dogged_a way_n at_o his_o table_n or_o to_o be_v cry_v but_o he_o will_v have_v the_o child_n set_v in_o comfort_n
and_o with_o a_o holy_a cheerfulness_n with_o a_o holy_a freedom_n of_o spirit_n not_o in_o a_o sullen_a way_n but_o as_o a_o child_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o father_n and_o not_o as_o a_o servant_n with_o the_o master_n object_n you_o tell_v we_o before_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v brokennesse_n of_o spirit_n and_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n answ_n that_o may_v be_v and_o joy_n we_o rejoice_v with_o tremble_v therefore_o that_o brokennesse_n of_o spirit_n that_o i_o mean_v must_v not_o be_v slavish_a horror_n and_o fear_n but_o a_o kind_o melt_v of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o sanctify_v god_n name_n godly_a sorrow_n and_o evangelical_a joy_n may_v stand_v together_o very_o well_o and_o therefore_o know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o time_n neither_o to_o give_v liberty_n to_o have_v your_o heart_n sink_v no_o there_o must_v be_v no_o sink_a sorrow_n of_o heart_n but_o such_o a_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n as_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o it_o you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o
