rom._n 9_o and_o 11._o chapâ—ers_n the_o objection_n that_o he_o start_v about_o god_n his_o create_a man_n upright_o etc._n etc._n i_o need_v not_o long_o stay_v upon_o the_o truth_n concern_v this_o be_v before_o state_v and_o prove_v and_o every_o impartial_a reader_n may_v see_v how_o miserable_o he_o trifle_n in_o his_o endeavour_n to_o solve_v it_o he_o give_v you_o his_o word_n for_o it_o that_o god_n will_v excuse_v man_n from_o all_o that_o obedience_n that_o they_o have_v by_o their_o sin_n lose_v both_o power_n and_o will_v to_o perform_v but_o i_o hope_v none_o be_v so_o credulous_a as_o to_o take_v his_o book_n to_o be_v canonical_a not_o one_o text_n of_o scripture_n do_v he_o nor_o can_v he_o produce_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o his_o opinion_n but_o only_a attempt_n to_o back_v one_o falsehood_n with_o another_o say_v that_o since_o the_o fall_n god_n require_v not_o perfect_a obedience_n of_o man_n but_o only_a sincerity_n and_o that_o he_o know_v that_o man_n may_v yield_v sincere_a obedience_n â—n_n faith_n and_o love_n and_o in_o that_o have_v promise_v both_o assistance_n and_o acceptance_n in_o his_o son_n etc._n etc._n two_o thing_n he_o here_o take_v for_o grant_v but_o both_o without_o ground_n 1._o that_o all_o the_o world_n be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n so_o as_o to_o be_v present_o interest_v in_o the_o privilege_n thereof_o and_o accept_v in_o those_o sincere_a endeavour_n to_o obey_v god_n which_o they_o be_v capable_a of_o in_o that_o condition_n wherein_o they_o be_v by_o nature_n which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o all_o that_o can_v be_v say_v of_o man_n in_o general_n unto_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v amount_v to_o no_o more_o than_o this_o that_o the_o grace_n and_o blessing_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v upright_o and_o so_o capable_a of_o yield_v perfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n according_a to_o that_o covenant_n in_o which_o he_o stand_v relate_v to_o he_o but_o he_o seek_v out_o many_o invention_n and_o by_o his_o voluntary_a defection_n from_o and_o rebellion_n against_o god_n fall_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o lose_v that_o rectitude_n of_o nature_n which_o be_v concreate_v with_o he_o and_o become_v blind_a disobedient_a and_o dead_a to_o god_n 4._o man_n have_v thus_o wicked_o and_o wilful_o lose_v and_o cast_v away_o his_o power_n of_o obey_v god_n do_v infer_v no_o unrighteousness_n in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n still_o require_v and_o command_v they_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v just_o and_o holy_a and_o good_a neither_o do_v it_o infer_v the_o least_o obligation_n on_o god_n to_o recover_v he_o out_o of_o his_o lose_a estate_n 5._o although_o man_n in_o his_o lapse_v estate_n have_v such_o a_o principle_n of_o enmity_n to_o they_o in_o the_o gospel_n these_o thing_n due_o consider_v tend_v to_o obviate_v the_o cavil_n of_o mr._n collier_n and_o to_o detect_v his_o mistake_n he_o assert_n in_o the_o first_o section_n p._n mean_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n which_o be_v it_o and_o not_o grace_n that_o he_o desire_v to_o exalt_v and_o as_o his_o notion_n be_v the_o same_o in_o this_o matter_n with_o the_o pelagian_o so_o be_v there_o the_o same_o deceit_n and_o aequivocation_n in_o his_o use_v the_o term_n grace_n which_o they_o seek_v refuge_n in_o and_o therefore_o let_v none_o be_v blind_v with_o that_o say_n of_o he_o in_o the_o same_o section_n that_o this_o capacity_n both_o of_o power_n and_o will_n be_v of_o god_n for_o pelagius_n himself_o acknowledge_v as_o much_o and_o it_o amount_v to_o no_o more_o than_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o our_o endowment_n with_o natural_a ability_n by_o god_n who_o be_v our_o creator_n all_o these_o be_v from_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o nature_n but_o ability_n to_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n be_v from_o he_o in_o a_o way_n of_o special_a grace_n which_o be_v that_o we_o plead_v for_o and_o deny_v that_o a_o natural_a unregenerate_a man_n be_v capable_a of_o save_a knowledge_n of_o or_o yield_a obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n otherwise_o then_o as_o a_o dead_a soul_n be_v capable_a of_o be_v quicken_v by_o the_o almighty_a power_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n this_o the_o scripture_n be_v full_a and_o express_v in_o i_o will_v instance_n in_o a_o text_n or_o two_o we_o read_v 1_o cor._n 2._o 14._o but_o the_o natural_a man_n receive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v foolishness_n unto_o he_o neither_o can_v be_v know_v they_o for_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v the_o apostle_n do_v in_o the_o context_n divide_v all_o man_n into_o two_o sort_n natural_a and_o spiritual_a the_o last_o have_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n and_o slight_v and_o reject_v by_o they_o neither_o can_v they_o know_v they_o viz._n save_o and_o effectual_o for_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v i._n e._n by_o the_o enlighten_v and_o teach_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o not_o without_o it_o but_o i_o find_v divers_a exception_n lay_v against_o this_o interpretation_n of_o the_o text_n by_o mr._n collier_n p._n 42._o &_o 43._o which_o i_o shall_v here_o remove_v out_o of_o the_o way_n 1._o he_o expound_v this_o term_n the_o natural_a man_n by_z the_o sensual_a man_n as_o if_o all_o unregenerate_a person_n be_v not_o intend_v 1._o 20._o &_o 2._o 7_o 8_o 9_o 2._o he_o suppose_v the_o idolatrous_a gentile_n that_o will_v not_o come_v to_o the_o gospel_n light_n etc._n etc._n to_o be_v intend_v but_o this_o also_o be_v plain_o to_o contradict_v the_o apostle_n who_o speak_v of_o both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n and_o particular_o those_o of_o they_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v as_o you_o may_v see_v most_o evident_o in_o his_o forego_n discourse_n and_o these_o when_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v propose_v to_o they_o receive_v they_o not_o but_o esteem_v they_o foolishness_n his_o three_o exception_n be_v plain_o ridiculous_a he_o say_v all_o where_o the_o gospel_n come_v shall_v understand_v and_o believe_v it_o but_o its_o thâ—se_a only_o that_o by_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v believe_v and_o obey_v it_o that_o have_v this_o spiritual_a understanding_n this_o we_o plead_v that_o although_o all_o unto_o who_o they_o be_v tender_v aught_o to_o receive_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n yet_o not_o unconvert_v man_n do_v so_o the_o reason_n be_v in_o part_n because_o he_o can_v understand_v they_o but_o they_o be_v foolishness_n to_o he_o and_o according_o reject_v by_o he_o and_o to_o confute_v this_o mr._n c._n tell_v we_o that_o no_o unbeliever_n have_v this_o understanding_n indeed_o but_o if_o he_o do_v believe_v and_o obey_v he_o shall_v have_v it_o as_o if_o to_o obey_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n be_v not_o to_o receive_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n spirit_n the_o sum_n be_v this_o if_o he_o do_v believe_v he_o may_v believe_v and_o if_o he_o be_v not_o ignorant_a he_o may_v understand_v etc._n etc._n 4._o he_o endeavour_v to_o persuade_v we_o that_o it_o be_v only_o such_o a_o understanding_n of_o gospel_n mystery_n as_o be_v proper_a to_o grow_v christian_n that_o the_o unconverted_a man_n be_v uncapable_a of_o and_o how_o repugnant_a this_o be_v to_o the_o whole_a discourse_n of_o the_o apostle_n i_o leave_v every_o one_o to_o judge_v thus_o he_o conclude_v his_o futilous_a cavil_n so_o that_o it_o suppose_v not_o any_o impossibility_n for_o the_o dark_a and_o worst_a of_o man_n to_o obtain_v light_n and_o life_n by_o the_o gospel_n he_o woulâ—_n fain_o lie_v hide_v under_o the_o darkness_n of_o his_o ambiguous_a term_n this_o scripture_n do_v not_o suppose_v indeed_o but_o that_o the_o dark_a and_o worst_a of_o man_n may_v be_v enlighten_v and_o quicken_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n spirit_n work_v with_o the_o word_n but_o that_o every_o man_n which_o have_v only_o the_o natural_a accomplishment_n of_o a_o man_n may_v understand_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n
if_o it_o be_v doctrinal_o propose_v to_o he_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o that_o ability_n which_o he_o have_v in_o his_o lapse_v state_n be_v utter_o deny_v â—n_o this_o text_n and_o tho._n c._n convict_v thereby_o of_o falsehood_n who_o affirm_v it_o the_o second_o scripture_n which_o i_o shall_v oppose_v to_o his_o forementioned_a assertion_n be_v joh._n 6._o 44._o no_o man_n can_v come_v without_o that_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o whence_o such_o act_n must_v flow_v unto_o this_o mr._n c._n reply_v p._n 29._o it_o be_v a_o great_a mistake_n to_o think_v and_o speak_v as_o if_o man_n be_v as_o dead_a and_o uncapable_a to_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n as_o a_o stock_n or_o a_o stone_n or_o as_o man_n that_o be_v natural_o dead_a this_o be_v a_o ridiculous_a and_o
