dissemble_a nor_o hate_v of_o god_n servant_n nor_o use_v no_o more_o false_a weight_n by_o humiliation_n the_o lord_n pluck_v away_o the_o confidence_n in_o a_o man_n privilege_n and_o all_o his_o good_a performance_n and_o all_o his_o duty_n by_o which_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o shelter_v himself_o and_o by_o which_o he_o think_v to_o get_v some_o succour_n and_o comfort_n to_o his_o own_o soul_n now_o as_o sin_n shall_v not_o rule_v in_o the_o heart_n so_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v the_o sinner_n see_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o have_v and_o do_v can_v never_o help_v he_o except_o the_o lord_n jesus_n come_v down_o from_o heaven_n by_o his_o mighty_a power_n for_o the_o further_a open_v of_o these_o you_o must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v these_o two_o main_a let_n which_o hinder_v the_o come_n of_o faith_n into_o the_o soul_n and_o which_o keep_v a_o man_n from_o believe_v in_o christ_n that_o christ_n may_v have_v possession_n of_o he_o first_o faith_n 1._o let_v of_o faith_n when_o the_o soul_n be_v take_v up_o with_o a_o secure_a course_n and_o rest_v itself_o well_o apay_v in_o his_o own_o practice_n and_o therefore_o it_o never_o see_v any_o need_n of_o a_o change_n nor_o never_o go_v out_o for_o a_o change_n now_o while_o he_o live_v thus_o and_o bless_v himself_o in_o his_o sin_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o ever_o the_o soul_n shall_v receive_v faith_n or_o ever_o by_o the_o power_n of_o faith_n repair_v to_o christ_n upon_o these_o term_n for_o ever_o where_o faith_n come_v it_o work_v a_o change_n all_o the_o old_a thing_n be_v do_v away_o and_o become_v new_a he_o be_v new_a in_o heart_n and_o life_n now_o the_o secure_a sinner_n that_o see_v no_o need_n of_o a_o change_n will_v never_o see_v need_n of_o faith_n nor_o labour_n for_o it_o and_o if_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n bid_v such_o a_o man_n to_o leave_v his_o sin_n and_o to_o pray_v in_o his_o family_n and_o forsake_v his_o sinful_a practice_n and_o to_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n day_n and_o take_v up_o new_a course_n he_o think_v they_o bid_v he_o to_o his_o loss_n now_o by_o that_o time_n the_o lord_n have_v take_v away_o this_o let_v and_o burden_a the_o soul_n marvellous_a extreme_o and_o say_v be_v it_o well_o that_o you_o live_v in_o drunkenness_n and_o in_o covetousness_n in_o cheat_v in_o lie_v and_o the_o like_a then_o take_v your_o sin_n and_o get_v you_o down_o to_o hell_n with_o they_o thus_o the_o lord_n be_v force_v to_o break_v the_o heart_n then_o a_o poor_a sinner_n begin_v to_o see_v where_o he_o be_v and_o now_o he_o say_v and_o be_v this_o true_a than_o i_o be_o the_o most_o miserable_a creature_n under_o heaven_n and_o except_o i_o be_v otherwise_o it_o have_v be_v good_a for_o i_o if_o i_o have_v never_o be_v bear_v by_o this_o time_n the_o soul_n see_v need_n of_o a_o change_n therefore_o as_o they_o say_v man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v 2.37_o act_n 2.37_o we_o have_v be_v thus_o and_o thus_o but_o if_o we_o rest_v here_o it_o will_v be_v our_o ruin_n for_o ever_o oh_o what_o shall_v we_o do_v thus_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o a_o restless_a dislike_n of_o itself_o and_o say_v i_o must_v either_o be_v otherwise_o or_o else_o i_o be_o but_o a_o damn_a man_n for_o ever_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v thus_o resolve_v that_o it_o must_v of_o necessity_n change_n and_o there_o be_v no_o dally_v with_o the_o lord_n nor_o with_o himself_o and_o this_o heart_n must_v be_v alter_v and_o this_o course_n must_v be_v amend_v when_o it_o see_v that_o it_o must_v change_v it_o begin_v to_o improve_v all_o mean_n to_o see_v if_o he_o can_v possible_o do_v it_o by_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o by_o his_o mean_n use_v as_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v say_v good_a lord_n can_v my_o wit_n compass_v it_o and_o can_v my_o prayer_n work_v it_o and_o though_o i_o be_o a_o sinful_a wretched_a man_n yet_o i_o will_v be_v no_o more_o drink_v nor_o unclean_a nor_o the_o like_a but_o by_o prayer_n and_o hear_v and_o fast_v i_o will_v labour_v to_o mend_v all_o in_o this_o kind_n will_v not_o these_o duty_n do_v the_o deed_n this_o very_o rest_v in_o a_o man_n selfe-sufficiency_n do_v marveilous_o cross_v and_o hinder_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n for_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n it_o go_v out_o of_o itself_o and_o fetch_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n grace_n and_o power_n from_o another_o the_o soul_n apprehend_v itself_o miserable_a and_o it_o fall_v upon_o the_o arm_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o mere_o go_v out_o to_o god_n for_o succour_n now_o for_o a_o man_n to_o fetch_v all_o from_o without_o and_o yet_o to_o seek_v for_o sufficiency_n from_o himself_o these_o two_o can_v stand_v together_o they_o be_v professe_o cross_v one_o to_o another_o and_o therefore_o after_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v the_o soul_n see_v a_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o a_o
that_o mercy_n shall_v deny_v he_o any_o thing_n and_o take_v any_o thing_n from_o he_o so_o it_o be_v content_a that_o mercy_n enjoin_v what_o it_o will_v and_o make_v what_o edict_n and_o law_n it_o will_v so_o that_o the_o command_n and_o precept_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n may_v take_v place_n in_o his_o heart_n when_o john_n baptist_n come_v to_o prepare_v they_o for_o good_a to_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n if_o the_o lord_n give_v any_o thing_n he_o be_v content_a and_o if_o the_o lord_n take_v away_o any_o thing_n or_o command_v any_o thing_n he_o be_v content_a you_o that_o be_v rule_v by_o your_o lust_n think_v of_o this_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v awaken_v and_o arrest_v your_o soul_n and_o you_o be_v go_v down_o to_o hell_n oh_o than_o you_o will_v cry_v lord_n forgive_v this_o and_o that_o sin_n it_o be_v true_a i_o have_v hate_v and_o loathe_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n good_a lord_n forgive_v this_o sin_n oh_o that_o mercy_n will_v save_v i_o than_o mercy_n will_v answer_v and_o say_v when_o you_o be_v out_o of_o your_o bed_n you_o will_v return_v to_o your_o old_a course_n again_o no_o he_o that_o rule_v in_o you_o let_v he_o save_v and_o succour_v you_o i_o will_v save_v none_o say_v mercy_n except_o i_o may_v rule_v they_o too_o three_o the_o last_o degree_n of_o contentedness_n be_v this_o the_o soul_n be_v willing_a that_o the_o lord_n shall_v make_v it_o able_a to_o take_v what_o mercy_n will_v give_v this_o be_v a_o low_a peg_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v bring_v unto_o the_o sinner_n before_o have_v nothing_o of_o his_o own_o in_o possession_n nay_o he_o can_v challenge_v nothing_o of_o the_o other_o but_o mere_o to_o do_v what_o he_o will_v and_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o take_v what_o mercy_n will_v give_v and_o bestow_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v not_o only_o content_v that_o mercy_n provide_v what_o it_o think_v good_a but_o also_o to_o give_v he_o strength_n to_o take_v what_o mercy_n give_v the_o beggar_n that_o come_v to_o the_o dole_n though_o he_o have_v no_o mean_n to_o help_v himself_o withal_o and_o though_o he_o can_v challenge_v nothing_o of_o the_o man_n yet_o he_o have_v a_o hand_n and_o can_v receive_v the_o dole_n that_o be_v give_v he_o but_o a_o poor_a sinner_n be_v bring_v to_o this_o low_a ebb_n and_o this_o show_v the_o emptiness_n of_o it_o that_o as_o he_o have_v no_o spiritual_a good_a at_o all_o and_o can_v challenge_v no_o good_a neither_o be_v he_o able_a to_o take_v that_o good_a which_o mercy_n provide_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o must_v receive_v mercy_n be_v faith_n and_o the_o humble_a soul_n see_v that_o he_o be_v as_o able_a to_o satisfy_v for_o his_o sin_n as_o to_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n that_o must_v satisfy_v and_o he_o be_v as_o able_a to_o keep_v the_o law_n as_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o that_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n for_o he_o in_o saint_n john_n believe_v be_v call_v receive_v 1.16_o joh._n 1.16_o and_o therefore_o the_o poor_a sinner_n see_v that_o it_o be_v not_o only_a mercy_n and_o salvation_n that_o must_v do_v he_o good_a but_o he_o see_v that_o if_o mercy_n and_o salvation_n be_v lay_v down_o upon_o the_o nail_n for_o believe_v and_o receive_v of_o it_o he_o can_v not_o do_v it_o of_o himself_o and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n must_v give_v he_o a_o hand_n to_o receive_v it_o with_o you_o know_v the_o apostle_n paul_n say_v 1.29_o phil._n 1.29_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v receive_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o god_n and_o the_o same_o apostle_n be_v plain_a to_o you_o it_o be_v give_v to_o believe_v so_o that_o faith_n be_v a_o gift_n and_o a_o poor_a sinner_n be_v as_o able_a to_o create_v a_o world_n as_o to_o receive_v mercy_n of_o himself_o the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o many_o a_o man_n that_o have_v make_v a_o good_a progress_n in_o the_o way_n of_o happiness_n he_o fall_v short_a of_o his_o hope_n many_o a_o sinner_n have_v be_v awaken_v and_o his_o heart_n humble_v and_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o hear_v of_o christ_n and_o think_v to_o lay_v hold_n of_o mercy_n and_o christ_n out_o of_o his_o own_o proper_a power_n and_o thus_o he_o deceive_v himself_o and_o the_o faith_n that_o he_o dream_v to_o have_v be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o fancy_n a_o faith_n of_o his_o own_o frame_n it_o be_v never_o frame_v by_o the_o almighty_a spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o heaven_n he_o never_o see_v need_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n to_o make_v he_o able_a to_o believe_v as_o well_o as_o to_o save_v he_o and_o therefore_o his_o they_o be_v no_o god_n at_o all_o able_a of_o themselves_o to_o save_v we_o but_o they_o be_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n that_o lead_v we_o to_o god_n yet_o they_o can_v give_v salvation_n to_o any_o that_o rest_v upon_o they_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o sinful_a heart_n to_o make_v the_o mean_n as_o meritorious_a to_o salvation_n yet_o mistake_v i_o not_o these_o duty_n must_v be_v have_v and_o use_v but_o still_o a_o man_n must_v not_o stay_v here_o a_o man_n will_v use_v his_o bucket_n but_o he_o expect_v water_n from_o the_o well_o these_o mean_n be_v the_o bucket_n but_o all_o our_o comfort_n and_o all_o our_o life_n and_o grace_n be_v only_o in_o christ_n if_o you_o say_v your_o bucket_n shall_v help_v you_o you_o may_v starve_v for_o thirst_n if_o you_o let_v it_o not_o down_o into_o the_o well_o for_o water_n so_o though_o you_o brag_v of_o your_o pray_n and_o hear_v and_o fast_v and_o of_o your_o alm_n and_o build_v of_o hospital_n and_o your_o good_a deed_n if_o none_o of_o these_o bring_v you_o to_o a_o christ_n and_o if_o these_o be_v not_o mean_n to_o settle_v you_o on_o a_o christ_n you_o shall_v die_v for_o thirst_n though_o your_o work_n be_v as_o sinner_n be_v conceive_v not_o yet_o to_o be_v in_o christ_n out_o of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n dare_v not_o be_v so_o proud_a as_o to_o think_v that_o he_o shall_v have_v any_o favour_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o the_o sinner_n be_v now_o overwhelm_v with_o the_o body_n of_o death_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o his_o abomination_n gall_v of_o he_o and_o be_v starve_v by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o still_o his_o sin_n be_v before_o his_o eye_n and_o to_o this_o day_n have_v get_v no_o assurance_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o and_o god_n be_v angry_a against_o he_o his_o heart_n shrink_v there_o promise_v john_n baptist_n be_v to_o make_v way_n for_o christ_n and_o the_o text_n say_v every_o valley_n shall_v be_v fill_v that_o be_v every_o desperate_a discourage_v heart_n and_o every_o mountain_n shall_v be_v level_v that_o be_v every_o proud_a heart_n shall_v be_v humble_v and_o then_o all_o flesh_n shall_v see_v the_o salvation_n of_o god_n here_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o we_o find_v not_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n that_o we_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o have_v there_o be_v mighty_a mountain_n of_o carnal_a reason_n and_o strange_a mist_n of_o discontentment_n between_o christ_n and_o the_o soul_n and_o these_o keep_v of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n which_o else_o will_v shine_v in_o our_o face_n for_o our_o everlasting_a comfort_n now_o be_v humble_v and_o throw_v away_o all_o those_o distemper_n and_o then_o the_o lord_n jesus_n who_o come_v with_o heal_v under_o his_o wing_n will_v comfort_v you_o and_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o salvation_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o christ_n and_o comfort_n in_o he_o if_o your_o soul_n be_v humble_v you_o shall_v see_v it_o and_o find_v the_o evidence_n of_o it_o when_o the_o sun_n be_v from_o the_o creature_n then_o the_o soul_n despair_v of_o all_o succour_n in_o himself_o it_o fall_v down_o at_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n and_o say_v if_o the_o lord_n will_v damn_v he_o he_o content_a to_o be_v at_o his_o dispose_n for_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o description_n that_o the_o soul_n seek_v for_o remedy_n else_o where_o and_o not_o from_o christ_n this_o be_v express_v here_o in_o the_o 15_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n the_o prodigal_n will_v needs_o have_v his_o portion_n and_o he_o will_v not_o ever_o be_v a_o slave_n in_o his_o father_n family_n well_o he_o have_v his_o portion_n and_o go_v he_o be_v and_o he_o have_v spend_v all_o and_o when_o all_o be_v go_v there_o fell_a a_o great_a famine_n in_o the_o land_n and_o what_o do_v he_o then_o he_o will_v not_o now_o riot_n any_o more_o as_o he_o have_v do_v because_o poverty_n pinch_v he_o in_o this_o kind_n but_o he_o turn_v good_a husband_n and_o be_v content_a to_o use_v any_o mean_n for_o his_o this_o prodigal_a be_v a_o true_a picture_n of_o every_o poor_a distress_a sinner_n that_o have_v riot_v away_o his_o time_n yet_o at_o last_o when_o the_o venom_n of_o sin_n begin_v to_o scorch_v and_o pierce_v his_o soul_n and_o he_o be_v famish_v for_o want_n of_o god_n favour_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n pursue_v he_o and_o a_o desperate_a sorrow_n seize_v upon_o his_o heart_n and_o he_o be_v weary_v and_o burden_a and_o tire_v with_o his_o sin_n and_o see_v that_o he_o have_v no_o help_n he_o set_v all_o his_o wit_n to_o work_v to_o see_v if_o he_o can_v tell_v which_o way_n to_o succour_v himself_o in_o these_o his_o grievance_n and_o though_o he_o will_v not_o take_v up_o any_o base_a course_n as_o he_o have_v do_v but_o prove_v a_o good_a husband_n and_o use_v all_o mean_n to_o succour_v himself_o so_o the_o doctrine_n from_o hence_o be_v this_o doctrine_n a_o sinner_n natural_o in_o his_o trouble_n and_o distress_n seek_v for_o succour_v not_o from_o god_n nor_o from_o christ_n but_o from_o himself_o and_o from_o his_o own_o ability_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o this_o great_a extremity_n of_o heart_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n he_o dare_v not_o nay_o he_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o sin_n any_o more_o but_o it_o betake_v itself_o to_o hear_v and_o pray_v and_o to_o other_o duty_n ordinary_a and_o extraordinary_a and_o by_o these_o he_o think_v to_o be_v absolute_o succour_v i_o confess_v the_o best_a of_o god_n saint_n must_v use_v these_o mean_n they_o must_v hear_v and_o pray_v and_o fast_o but_o they_o must_v not_o rest_v upon_o these_o it_o be_v very_o fit_a that_o the_o prodigal_n shall_v labour_v for_o his_o live_n but_o not_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o withal_o seek_v home_o to_o his_o father_n for_o relief_n so_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o we_o shall_v hear_v and_o pray_v and_o fast_o but_o these_o shall_v not_o keep_v we_o from_o a_o father_n it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n natural_o to_o make_v of_o mean_n a_o saviour_n to_o himself_o he_o scrape_v for_o some_o succour_n and_o and_o rest_v upon_o some_o rot_a endeavour_n and_o because_o he_o can_v hear_v and_o pray_v and_o fast_o he_o think_v this_o be_v enough_o to_o save_v he_o he_o use_v not_o these_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o christ_n but_o rest_v on_o they_o it_o be_v a_o natural_a thing_n ingraft_v into_o all_o mankind_n since_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n as_o you_o may_v see_v by_o the_o apostle_n 9.31.32_o rom._n 9.31.32_o because_o the_o jew_n be_v scramble_n for_o life_n and_o happiness_n from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o they_o can_v not_o attain_v it_o but_o the_o gentile_n which_o do_v not_o seek_v it_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o get_v it_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v when_o they_o see_v their_o anguish_n and_o trouble_n than_o they_o fall_v upon_o these_o duty_n of_o hear_v and_o pray_v and_o fast_v and_o they_o think_v that_o be_v enough_o in_o conscience_n and_o here_o they_o take_v up_o their_o stand_n this_o be_v to_o cleave_v to_o a_o man_n of_o the_o country_n 10.3_o rom._n 10.3_o and_o the_o same_o apostle_n say_v they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o rightousnes_n of_o god_n seek_v soul_n in_o this_o distress_n send_v over_o to_o prayer_n and_o hear_n and_o holy_a service_n and_o think_v by_o his_o wit_n and_o duty_n or_o some_o such_o like_a matter_n to_o succour_v itself_o and_o it_o begin_v to_o say_v my_o hear_n and_o my_o prayer_n etc._n etc._n will_v not_o these_o save_v i_o thus_o the_o soul_n in_o conclusion_n rest_v in_o their_o duty_n though_o these_o duty_n
