to_o weaken_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o saint_n reliance_n by_o sunder_v or_o sever_n their_o soul_n from_o the_o promise_n so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n have_v the_o sight_n of_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o promise_n be_v by_o he_o a_o gracious_a heart_n say_v i_o will_v for_o ever_o trust_v in_o god_n and_o rely_v upon_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o thus_o and_o thus_o have_v god_n speak_v and_o thus_o and_o thus_o say_v the_o promise_n to_o i_o but_o now_o if_o the_o promise_n be_v go_v than_o a_o man_n reliance_n fail_v satan_n therefore_o in_o the_o into_o of_o temptation_n labour_v to_o take_v away_o the_o promise_n scare_v the_o soul_n or_o cog_a the_o soul_n from_o the_o promise_n this_o he_o do_v many_o way_n but_o sometime_o he_o speak_v out_o thus_o what!_o do_v you_o meddle_v with_o the_o promise_n the_o promise_n do_v belong_v to_o you_o the_o threaten_v belong_v to_o you_o you_o have_v finned_a so_o and_o so_o and_o the_o threaten_v belong_v to_o you_o but_o the_o promise_n do_v belong_v to_o you_o and_o if_o he_o can_v but_o get_v the_o soul_n to_o believe_v this_o than_o his_o faith_n fail_v oh_o quest_n but_o how_o shall_v we_o bear_v off_o this_o blow_n in_o time_n of_o temptation_n for_o i_o confess_v thus_o by_o this_o temptation_n do_v satan_n strike_v at_o my_o faith_n and_o labour_n to_o make_v my_o faith_n to_o fail_v in_o this_o case_n let_v a_o man_n heart_n speak_v thus_o answ_n first_n if_o the_o lord_n do_v command_v i_o to_o believe_v than_o the_o promise_n belong_v to_o i_o for_o i_o can_v believe_v unless_o i_o apply_v the_o promise_n now_o in_o this_o time_n at_o this_o very_a time_n of_o my_o temptation_n the_o lord_n do_v command_v i_o to_o believe_v else_o it_o be_v no_o sin_n not_o to_o believe_v it_o be_v a_o sin_n he_o say_v thus_o if_o i_o be_v more_o godly_a now_o than_o i_o be_v when_o satan_n tell_v i_o that_o the_o threaten_v do_v not_o belong_v to_o i_o and_o the_o promise_n do_v belong_v to_o i_o than_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n for_o this_o temptation_n when_o i_o go_v on_o in_o a_o way_n of_o sin_n than_o satan_n tell_v i_o the_o threaten_v do_v not_o belong_v to_o i_o and_o then_o he_o tell_v i_o the_o promise_n do_v belong_v to_o i_o oh_o but_o now_o i_o be_o more_o godly_a than_o i_o be_v then_o i_o have_v more_o of_o christ_n than_o i_o have_v than_o i_o be_o sure_a &_o therefore_o satan_n do_v thou_o tell_v i_o that_o the_o promise_n do_v belong_v to_o i_o then_o '_o therefore_o it_o belong_v much_o more_o to_o i_o now_o thou_o tell_v i_o heretofore_o when_o i_o go_v on_o in_o a_o way_n of_o sin_n the_o threaten_v do_v not_o belong_v to_o i_o now_o than_o the_o threaten_v do_v less_o belong_v to_o i_o for_o now_o i_o be_o more_o godly_a than_o i_o be_v then_o but_o above_o you_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v and_o to_o rely_v upon_o god_n and_o your_o faith_n of_o reliance_n shall_v not_o fail_v this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n the_o faith_n of_o reliance_n second_o quest_n 2_o how_o do_v satan_n strike_v or_o labour_n to_o weaken_v the_o faith_n of_o assurance_n the_o assurance_n of_o god_n people_n much_o may_v be_v say_v here_o answ_n it_o be_v a_o large_a field_n i_o shall_v only_o gather_v up_o some_o few_o thing_n and_o present_v they_o to_o you_o sometime_o satan_n do_v labour_n to_o weaken_v the_o assurance_n of_o the_o saint_n by_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n assurance_n be_v the_o flower_n of_o faith_n it_o grow_v upon_o faith_n but_o you_o have_v no_o faith_n say_v satan_n and_o therefore_o your_o assurance_n be_v naught_o but_o how_o unreasonable_a be_v this_o temptation_n for_o observe_v i_o pray_v in_o what_o round_v satan_n go_v he_o tempt_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o we_o have_v no_o faith_n because_o we_o have_v no_o assurance_n and_o he_o tempt_v we_o again_o to_o believe_v we_o have_v no_o assurance_n because_o we_o have_v no_o faith_n for_o answer_v hereunto_o i_o shall_v only_o turn_v unto_o that_o 4._o to_o the_o roman_n it_o be_v say_v of_o abraham_n at_o the_o 21._o verse_n be_v full_o persuade_v that_o what_o god_n have_v promise_v he_o be_v able_a also_o to_o perform_v and_o therefore_o at_o the_o 22._o it_o be_v impute_v to_o he_o for_o righteousness_n now_o it_o be_v not_o write_v for_o his_o sake_n alone_o that_o it_o be_v impute_v to_o he_o but_o for_o we_o also_o to_o who_o it_o shall_v the_o faith_n of_o assurance_n yes_o he_o be_v assure_v indeed_o but_o i_o pray_v of_o what_o he_o be_v assure_v that_o god_n be_v able_a to_o perform_v he_o be_v full_o persuade_v that_o what_o he_o have_v promise_v he_o be_v able_a also_o to_o perform_v abraham_n believe_v that_o god_n be_v able_a and_o so_o rely_v upon_o god_n and_o hereby_o he_o be_v justify_v so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o man_n and_o woman_n now_o if_o they_o be_v assure_v and_o persuade_v that_o god_n be_v able_a and_o so_o rely_v upon_o god_n this_o be_v the_o faith_n that_o justify_v when_o therefore_o this_o temptation_n come_v answer_v unto_o satan_n satan_n thou_o say_v i_o have_v no_o assurance_n because_o i_o have_v no_o faith_n but_o i_o have_v this_o assurance_n that_o abraham_n have_v whereby_o he_o be_v justify_v i_o believe_v god_n
be_v able_a to_o help_v i_o and_o so_o i_o rely_v upon_o god_n and_o therefore_o satan_n i_o be_o now_o justify_v and_o stand_v righteous_a through_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n second_o as_o he_o do_v labour_n to_o weaken_v the_o faith_n of_o assurance_n by_o tell_v the_o saint_n that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n so_o also_o by_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o have_v no_o obedience_n that_o they_o do_v profit_n under_o the_o mean_n that_o they_o be_v not_o fruitful_a where_o ever_o there_o be_v true_a faith_n there_o will_v be_v obedienee_n and_o man_n will_v profit_v under_o the_o mean_n and_o be_v fruitful_a but_o you_o be_v unfruitful_a and_o you_o be_v barren_a and_o where_o be_v your_o obedience_n here_o be_v no_o obedience_n therefore_o no_o faith_n so_o no_o assurance_n your_o assurance_n be_v wrong_a well_o but_o how_o may_v we_o ward_v quest_n and_o keep_v off_o this_o blow_n in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n that_o our_o faith_n of_o assurance_n may_v not_o fail_v true_o this_o blow_n be_v not_o to_o be_v ward_v off_o answ_n if_o this_o be_v true_a that_o you_o never_o be_v obedient_a never_o fruitful_a never_o profit_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n this_o blow_n fall_v dead_a upon_o the_o soul_n this_o blow_n be_v not_o to_o be_v ward_v off_o this_o be_v no_o temptation_n but_o now_o if_o you_o have_v ever_o be_v fruitful_a if_o you_o have_v ever_o be_v obedient_a if_o you_o have_v ever_o profit_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n though_o for_o the_o present_a you_o may_v seem_v dead_a yet_o remember_v what_o job_n say_v there_o be_v hope_n of_o a_o tree_n though_o it_o be_v cut_v down_o that_o by_o the_o scent_n of_o water_n it_o will_v flourish_v again_o and_o so_o there_o be_v hope_n of_o thy_o soul_n that_o by_o the_o scent_n of_o the_o gospel-water_n thou_o may_v flourish_v again_o but_o though_o there_o be_v no_o obedience_n in_o your_o own_o eye_n though_o you_o do_v profit_n under_o the_o mean_n in_o your_o own_o eye_n yet_o your_o obedience_n may_v be_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o and_o in_o time_n of_o temptation_n another_o man_n eye_n be_v a_o better_a judge_n than_o your_o own_o but_o suppose_v there_o seem_v to_o be_v no_o obedience_n neither_o in_o your_o own_o nor_o another_o eye_n yet_o the_o root_n of_o the_o matter_n may_v be_v in_o you_o you_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o the_o fish_n that_o be_v in_o the_o water_n in_o a_o windy_a and_o a_o stormy_a day_n you_o put_v many_o fish_n into_o a_o pond_n and_o in_o a_o fair_a sun_n shiney_a day_n you_o see_v they_o play_v upon_o the_o water_n upon_o the_o uppermost_a part_n of_o the_o water_n but_o in_o a_o rainy_a and_o stormy_a day_n you_o see_v none_o of_o they_o there_o but_o yet_o you_o say_v they_o be_v all_o there_o they_o be_v in_o the_o water_n they_o be_v at_o the_o bottom_n though_o you_o see_v they_o not_o and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v in_o this_o stormy_a time_n of_o temptation_n your_o obedience_n and_o profit_v be_v not_o see_v but_o it_o may_v be_v there_o as_o heretofore_o satan_n do_v never_o more_o press_v a_o child_n of_o god_n to_o try_v himself_o by_o sign_n of_o grace_n draw_v from_o his_o own_o conversation_n than_o in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n there_o be_v indeed_o a_o good_a use_n of_o sign_n draw_v from_o our_o own_o conversation_n but_o this_o be_v agree_v upon_o by_o all_o that_o there_o be_v no_o use_n of_o they_o in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o therefore_o say_v luther_n in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n i_o be_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o law_n nor_o no_o work_n but_o only_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o i_o do_v rest_n up-him_a do_v satan_n come_v forth_o therefore_o with_o this_o temptation_n that_o you_o have_v no_o obedience_n that_o you_o do_v profit_n that_o you_o be_v unfruitful_a answer_v it_o thus_o true_a satan_n i_o confess_v i_o be_o very_o unprofitable_a and_o therefore_o i_o will_v learn_v to_o profit_v more_o i_o confess_v i_o be_o very_o unfruitful_a and_o therefore_o i_o will_v labour_v to_o be_v more_o fruitful_a but_o satan_n i_o will_v not_o now_o at_o this_o time_n determine_v about_o my_o condition_n for_o it_o may_v be_v a_o time_n of_o temptation_n hereafter_o at_o another_o time_n i_o will_v come_v and_o determine_v about_o my_o condition_n and_o i_o will_v look_v after_o sign_n but_o now_o at_o this_o time_n it_o may_v be_v a_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o therefore_o i_o will_v forbear_v to_o wind_n and_o draw_v up_o a_o conclusion_n but_o lean_v myself_o upon_o god_n and_o rest_n upon_o god_n at_o this_o time_n three_o sometime_o satan_n do_v labour_n to_o weaken_v the_o assurance_n of_o god_n people_n the_o faith_n of_o assurance_n to_o make_v that_o to_o fail_v by_o tell_v of_o they_o that_o they_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o because_o they_o have_v no_o particular_a faith_n no_o particular_a promise_n for_o say_v satan_n thus_o faith_n and_o waver_a faith_n and_o doubt_v do_v not_o agree_v he_o that_o believe_v doubt_v not_o but_o now_o you_o pray_v and_o doubt_n you_o believe_v and_o waver_v you_o have_v no_o particular_a word_n for_o what_o you_o believe_v therefore_o you_o have_v no_o particular_a faith_n so_o no_o faith_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o your_o assurance_n be_v naught_o quest_n how_o shall_v we_o ward_v off_o this_o blow_n answ_n in_o this_o case_n now_o let_v a_o poor_a believer_n say_v two_o or_o three_o thing_n unto_o his_o own_o soul_n first_o tell_v thy_o soul_n this_o though_o it_o please_v god_n sometime_o to_o give_v out_o a_o particular_a word_n unto_o his_o people_n a_o particular_a promise_n in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n or_o desertion_n especial_o or_o temptation_n yet_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o therefore_o giveout_o a_o particular_a promise_n that_o a_o man_n may_v measure_v his_o condition_n thereby_o there_o be_v a_o mistake_n but_o the_o lord_n do_v therefore_o give_v out_o a_o particular_a word_n or_o promise_n to_o uphold_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o condition_n not_o to_o measure_v out_o his_o condition_n by_o it_o but_o to_o uphold_v he_o and_o therefore_o though_o i_o have_v not_o a_o particular_a word_n or_o promise_n i_o will_v not_o conclude_v against_o my_o faith_n for_o this_o again_o tell_v thy_o own_o soul_n that_o though_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v out_o a_o particular_a word_n or_o promise_n sometime_o yet_o always_o he_o do_v not_o hezekiah_n have_v a_o particular_a word_n for_o his_o recovery_n but_o the_o three_o child_n have_v not_o a_o particular_a word_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v deliver_v out_o of_o the_o fiery_a furnace_n yet_o they_o believe_v and_o whether_o god_n deliver_v or_o do_v not_o deliver_v say_v they_o we_o will_v not_o bow_v ourselves_o to_o this_o idolatry_n so_o that_o though_o god_n be_v please_v sometime_o to_o give_v out_o a_o particular_a word_n or_o promise_n yet_o always_o he_o do_v not_o and_o therefore_o my_o faith_n may_v be_v right_a satan_n though_o i_o have_v not_o a_o particular_a word_n now_o for_o this_o business_n again_o tell_v thy_o soul_n this_o that_o though_o god_n be_v please_v thus_o to_o indulge_v and_o sometime_o to_o give_v out_o a_o particular_a promise_n unto_o his_o people_n and_o they_o have_v a_o particular_a faith_n concern_v this_o or_o that_o business_n yet_o there_o be_v always_o a_o waiting-faith_n that_o we_o read_v of_o in_o scripture_n there_o be_v a_o faith_n of_o recumbency_n whereby_o a_o soul_n lean_v upon_o god_n and_o commit_v his_o cause_n unto_o god_n and_o there_o be_v a_o wait_a faith_n now_o therefore_o satan_n though_o i_o have_v not_o a_o particular_a word_n and_o a_o particular_a faith_n for_o this_o business_n yet_o notwithstanding_o i_o have_v a_o wait_a faith_n i_o can_v wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n my_o god_n and_o i_o can_v rest_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o satan_n i_o do_v yet_o believe_v and_o my_o faith_n be_v right_n tell_v your_o own_o soul_n thus_o so_o shall_v you_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v to_o your_o faith_n and_o shall_v not_o fall_v off_o in_o the_o time_n of_o your_o temptation_n and_o you_o shall_v overcome_v a_o man_n may_v believe_v he_o shall_v overcome_v his_o outward_a enemy_n here_o in_o the_o field_n and_o yet_o fall_v before_o he_o and_o not_o overcome_v but_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o this_o enemy_n god_n enemy_n your_o father_n enemy_n and_o your_o enemy_n believe_v you_o shall_v overcome_v he_o and_o you_o shall_v overcome_v he_o quest_n but_o shall_v we_o that_o which_o be_v express_v be_v christ_n tender_a care_n of_o and_o love_n unto_o his_o disciple_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o temptation_n and_o this_o love_n and_o care_n of_o he_o towards_o his_o disciple_n under_o temptation_n be_v express_v in_o many_o thing_n first_o in_o the_o forewarn_n of_o they_o of_o a_o temptation_n come_v upon_o they_o there_o be_v his_o love_n and_o care_n in_o that_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o the_o temptation_n before_o it_o come_v and_o then_o also_o he_o pray_v for_o they_o yea_o he_o pray_v for_o they_o before_o they_o be_v tempt_v yea_o and_o he_o tell_v they_o that_o he_o do_v pray_v for_o they_o that_o they_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o his_o help_n in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o temptation_n great_a be_v his_o love_n and_o care_n to_o and_o for_o his_o disciple_n under_z their_o temptation_n and_o so_o the_o observation_n be_v this_o christ_n love_n and_o mercy_n doct._n be_v never_o more_o at_o work_n for_o his_o disciple_n and_o people_n then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o assault_v by_o satan_n when_o satan_n be_v most_o busy_a to_o tempt_v and_o assault_v their_o faith_n then_o be_v christ_n love_n and_o mercy_n most_o at_o work_n to_o keep_v and_o defend_v both_o they_o and_o their_o faith_n we_o do_v read_v of_o such_o a_o prayer_n for_o peter_n before_o we_o read_v indeed_o that_o our_o saviour_n say_v unto_o peter_n unto_o his_o honour_n to_o his_o mother_n he_o set_v she_o down_o at_o his_o right_a hand_n thus_o god_n the_o father_n will_v express_v the_o honourable_a welcome_n that_o christ_n have_v when_o he_o come_v to_o heaven_n sit_v thou_o down_o on_o my_o right_a hand_n say_v he_o now_o you_o shall_v observe_v that_o when_o soever_o this_o be_v make_v mention_n of_o the_o sit_v down_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n the_o father_n it_o be_v make_v mention_n of_o not_o with_o the_o kingly_a office_n of_o christ_n but_o with_o the_o priestly_a office_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o that_o he_o be_v set_v down_o there_o to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o priestly_a office_n one_o will_v think_v i_o say_v that_o this_o shall_v be_v express_v with_o the_o kingly_a office_n of_o christ_n but_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o run_v along_o in_o the_o scripture_n still_o with_o the_o priestly_a office_n of_o jesus_n christ_n look_v into_o the_o 8._o chapter_n of_o the_o hebrew_n the_o 1._o verse_n now_o of_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o have_v speak_v this_o be_v the_o sum_n we_o have_v such_o a_o highpriest_n who_o be_v set_v on_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o throne_n of_o the_o majesty_n in_o the_o heaven_n it_o be_v name_v with_o the_o priestly_a office_n and_o so_o again_o in_o the_o 10._o chapter_n of_o the_o hebrew_n at_o the_o 11._o and_o 12._o verse_n every_o highpriest_n stand_v daily_a minister_a and_o offer_v often_o time_n the_o same_o sacrifice_n which_o can_v never_o take_v away_o sin_n but_o this_o man_n speak_v of_o christ_n after_o he_o have_v offer_v one_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n for_o ever_o sit_v down_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n it_o be_v carry_v a_o long_a with_o the_o mention_n of_o the_o priestly_a office_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o he_o be_v sit_v down_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n the_o father_n in_o heaven_n on_o purpose_n to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o priestly_a office_n when_o jesus_n christ_n come_v into_o heaven_n into_o the_o holy_a of_o holy_a he_o come_v thither_o as_o our_o great_a highpriest_n and_o he_o say_v unto_o god_n the_o father_n lord_n i_o be_o not_o now_o come_v in_o my_o own_o name_n for_o my_o own_o sake_n only_o but_o i_o come_v as_o the_o great_a highpriest_n have_v on_o this_o breastplate_n the_o name_n of_o all_o the_o elect_n and_o i_o come_v to_o intercede_v for_o poor_a sinner_n i_o come_v as_o highpriest_n say_v god_n the_o father_n to_o he_o welcome_o upon_o those_o term_n welcome_o upon_o those_o term_n not_o which_o stand_v thou_o do_v come_v in_o their_o name_n come_v and_o sit_v down_o at_o my_o right_a hand_n say_v god_n the_o father_n to_o he_o thus_o father_n be_v engage_v for_o he_o receive_v he_o upon_o those_o term_n into_o heaven_n as_o our_o great_a highpriest_n the_o father_n therefore_o be_v engage_v to_o hear_v his_o intercession_n and_o so_o the_o intercession_n of_o jesus-christ_n must_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o power_n and_o prevalency_n with_o god_n the_o father_n in_o heaven_n this_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n but_o three_o do_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n intercede_v for_o we_o in_o heaven_n as_o our_o great_a highpriest_n yes_o and_o he_o do_v do_v this_o in_o a_o more_o transcendent_a and_o eminent_a way_n and_o manner_n than_o ever_o any_o highpriest_n do_v before_o he_o for_o first_o he_o have_v go_v through_o more_o temptation_n than_o ever_o any_o highpriest_n do_v he_o be_v tempt_v say_v the_o text_n that_o he_o may_v succour_v those_o that_o be_v temp_v as_o a_o highpriest_n if_o he_o be_v tempt_v that_o he_o may_v succour_v those_o that_o be_v tempt_v succour_v they_o as_o a_o highpriest_n than_o the_o more_o he_o be_v tempt_v the_o more_o experimental_o able_a he_o be_v for_o to_o succour_v those_o in_o the_o 4._o of_o matthew_n if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n twice_o that_o the_o devil_n will_v set_v a_o if_o upon_o christ_n sonship_n oh_o but_o i_o be_o tempt_v often_o time_n to_o use_v indirect_a mean_n to_o get_v out_o of_o trouble_n so_o be_v christ_n too_o command_v that_o these_o stone_n be_v make_v bread_n say_v the_o devil_n to_o he_o oh_o but_o sometime_o i_o have_v be_v tempt_v even_o to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o myself_o so_o do_v the_o devil_n tempt_v christ_n too_o cast_v thyself_o down_o off_o the_o pinnacle_n of_o the_o temple_n that_o be_v a_o temptation_n oh_o but_o i_o be_o tempt_v unto_o such_o evil_a thing_n that_o true_o i_o be_o afraid_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o blasphemy_n such_o horrid_a and_o wretched_a blasphemy_n as_o i_o think_v never_o come_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o child_n of_o god_n so_o that_o i_o be_o afraid_a to_o think_v of_o they_o and_o ashamed_a to_o mention_v they_o blasphemy_n blush_v blush_v o_o sun_n that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n the_o god_n of_o glory_n shall_v fall_v down_o to_o the_o devil_n and_o worship_v the_o devil_n what_o wretched_a blasphemy_n be_v here_o that_o he_o shall_v speak_v this_o and_o yet_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n he_o be_v tempt_v to_o it_o what_o shall_v i_o say_v he_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n tempt_v like_o unto_o we_o sin_n only_o except_v now_o there_o be_v never_o any_o highpriest_n that_o be_v so_o tempt_v and_o he_o be_v therefore_o tempt_v that_o he_o may_v succour_v those_o that_o be_v tempt_v he_o be_v more_o must_v needs_o be_v christ_n for_o no_o angel_n intercede_v but_o christ_n alone_o what_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o this_o intercession_n at_o the_o 13._o verse_n the_o lord_n answer_v the_o angel_n that_o talk_v with_o i_o with_o good_a word_n and_o comfortable_a word_n i_o indeed_o good_a word_n and_o comfortable_a be_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o intercession_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v a_o court_n but_o now_o he_o be_v dead_a i_o but_o here_o be_v a_o friend_n that_o never_o die_v he_o ever_o live_v to_o make_v intercession_n friend_n may_v alter_v and_o turn_v enemy_n but_o he_o change_v not_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n say_v unto_o his_o disciple_n rejoice_v not_o in_o this_o that_o the_o devil_n fall_v down_o like_o lightning_n before_o you_o but_o rejoice_v in_o this_o that_o your_o name_n be_v write_v in_o heaven_n it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a joy_n to_o have_v one_o name_n write_v in_o heaven_n oh_o but_o what_o be_v it_o then_o to_o have_v one_o name_n write_v in_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o heaven_n to_o have_v one_o name_n write_v there_o upon_o the_o breastplate_n of_o jesus_n christ_n our_o great_a highpriest_n that_o be_v go_v into_o the_o holy_a of_o holy_a thus_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n christ_n be_v now_o go_v to_o heaven_n enter_v into_o the_o holy_a of_o holy_a and_o carry_v our_o name_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o father_n and_o there_o plead_v and_o intercede_v for_o we_o oh_o what_o matter_n of_o comfot_o be_v here_o but_o you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o object_n this_o be_v indeed_o exceed_v good_a and_o very_o comfortable_a in_o itself_o but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o i_o for_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o the_o lord_n christ_n do_v not_o intercede_v for_o i_o if_o indeed_o i_o can_v persuade_v myself_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n be_v in_o heaven_n as_o my_o highpriest_n to_o intercede_v for_o i_o i_o think_v very_o i_o shall_v have_v comfort_n though_o i_o be_v in_o the_o low_a bottom_n though_o i_o be_v in_o hell_n itself_o but_o oh_o i_o be_o afraid_a to_o bear_v myself_o upon_o the_o intercession_n of_o jesus_n christ_n lest_o i_o shall_v presume_v this_o be_v the_o great_a objection_n and_o stand_v up_o continual_o ans_fw-fr to_o resist_v the_o comfort_n of_o god_n people_n give_v i_o leave_v therefore_o to_o deal_v with_o this_o objection_n all_o along_o and_o to_o take_v it_o off_o that_o so_o the_o comfort_n may_v fall_v the_o more_o full_o upon_o you_o first_o i_o will_v show_v it_o be_v no_o presumption_n for_o we_o to_o bear_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o intercession_n of_o jesus_n christ_n second_o who_o those_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n do_v intercede_v for_o in_o heaven_n and_o three_o how_o willing_a how_o infinite_o willing_a he_o be_v to_o intercede_v for_o we_o that_o so_o i_o may_v bring_v the_o comfort_n near_o to_o our_o own_o bosom_n first_o i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o presumption_n for_o we_o to_o bear_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o intercession_n of_o jesus_n christ_n no_o presumption_n to_o believe_v we_o know_v the_o story_n of_o the_o woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n that_o come_v unto_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n touch_v the_o hem_n of_o his_o garment_n for_o her_o cure_n and_o she_o be_v cure_v thereby_o but_o our_o saviour_n perceive_v virtue_n to_o be_v go_v from_o he_o he_o call_v out_o the_o person_n who_o have_v touch_v i_o come_v forth_o and_o the_o woman_n come_v forth_o tremble_v our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n do_v not_o say_v to_o this_o poor_a woman_n how_o dare_v you_o thus_o touch_v i_o how_o dare_v you_o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o crooked_a back_n come_v and_o put_v velvet_n upon_o he_o silk_n scarlet_a upon_o he_o it_o may_v make_v he_o handsome_o but_o it_o will_v not_o change_v his_o back_n and_o make_v he_o straight_o but_o when_o the_o lord_n christ_n come_v he_o find_v all_o our_o soul_n crook-backed_a as_o it_o be_v and_o he_o put_v on_o his_o righteousness_n and_o this_o garment_n make_v that_o that_o be_v crooked_a to_o become_v straight_o it_o make_v the_o very_a crook-backed_a duty_n to_o become_v a_o strait_a duty_n do_v we_o ever_o hear_v or_o read_v of_o any_o seal_n that_o when_o it_o be_v set_v upon_o the_o wax_n will_v change_v the_o wax_n into_o gold_n or_o into_o silver_n like_o the_o seal_n it_o may_v leave_v its_o impression_n but_o it_o do_v not_o change_v the_o stamp_n and_o his_o own_o righteousness_n upon_o a_o duty_n that_o which_o be_v brass_n before_o full_a of_o fail_n and_o much_o unrighteousness_n before_o change_v it_o into_o gold_n into_o silver_n he_o only_o have_v the_o philosopher_n stone_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v all_o that_o christ_n touch_v turn_n into_o gold_n turn_v all_o our_o duty_n into_o gold_n and_o when_o he_o have_v do_v so_o he_o present_v they_o unto_o god_n the_o father_n this_o our_o great_a highpriest_n do_v and_o this_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n but_o how_o do_v all_o this_o make_v for_o our_o comfort_n quest_n 5_o a_o venture_n at_o sea_n we_o be_v unwilling_a to_o lose_v our_o venture_n and_o the_o great_a our_o venture_n be_v the_o more_o unwilling_a to_o lose_v it_o if_o a_o man_n have_v but_o a_o quarter_n of_o his_o estate_n in_o a_o vessel_n he_o be_v unwilling_a to_o lose_v it_o more_o unwilling_a if_o he_o have_v half_a his_o estate_n most_o if_o he_o have_v all_o and_o his_o child_n there_o in_o the_o vessel_n too_o now_o as_o man_n be_v unwilling_a to_o lose_v their_o worldly_a venture_n so_o a_o man_n that_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o soul_n be_v very_o unwilling_a to_o lose_v his_o soul_n venture_v to_o lose_v his_o prayer_n and_o to_o lose_v all_o his_o duty_n friend_n here_o be_v a_o insuring-office_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v our_o great_a insurer_n in_o this_o respect_n and_o he_o do_v as_o he_o be_v our_o highpriest_n offer_v up_o our_o gift_n unto_o god_n the_o father_n assure_v we_o that_o none_o be_v lose_v not_o any_o lose_v indeed_o if_o we_o have_v such_o a_o highpriest_n as_o be_v not_o able_a to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o circumstance_n of_o our_o duty_n much_o may_v be_v lose_v but_o this_o our_o lord_n christ_n our_o great_a highpriest_n do_v not_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o our_o duty_n what_o ever_o it_o be_v but_o of_o all_o the_o circumstance_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o so_o present_v they_o unto_o god_n the_o father_n in_o the_o full_a for_o ever_o keep_v i_o from_o opposition_n to_o the_o good_a way_n of_o god_n i_o have_v say_v sometime_o may_n a_o wicked_a man_n say_v concern_v godly_a man_n duty_n that_o it_o be_v their_o hypocrisy_n and_o i_o have_v say_v concern_v such_o and_o such_o professor_n this_o be_v your_o pride_n and_o this_o be_v your_o singularity_n and_o i_o have_v oppose_v with_o all_o bitterness_n and_o earnestness_n the_o praying_n and_o wrestle_n of_o some_o of_o god_n people_n but_o be_v this_o true_a that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n take_v every_o prayer_n of_o the_o mean_a of_o god_n child_n and_o carry_v it_o into_o the_o bosom_n of_o god_n the_o father_n and_o shall_v i_o spit_v upon_o that_o that_o christ_n own_v shall_v i_o dare_v to_o oppose_v that_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n come_v to_o christ_n all_o be_v nothing_o all_o be_v lose_v if_o i_o be_v a_o drunkard_n and_o will_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n prayer_n be_v all_o lose_v if_o i_o be_v a_o swearer_n and_o will_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n a_o unclean_a wretch_n and_o will_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n all_o my_o prayer_n and_o all_o my_o duty_n be_v lose_v oh_o the_o lord_n pity_v i_o may_n many_o a_o poor_a soul_n say_v i_o have_v lose_v too_o many_o prayer_n already_o through_o the_o lord_n grace_n now_o i_o will_v lose_v no_o more_o oh_o i_o come_v to_o christ_n lord_n i_o come_v i_o come_v this_o be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o make_v every_o man_n now_o for_o to_o come_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n because_o the_o lord_n jesus_n our_o highpriest_n take_v every_o duty_n and_o carry_v it_o into_o belove_a it_o be_v with_o your_o prayer_n and_o duty_n as_o it_o be_v with_o fire_n your_o kitchen_n fire_n be_v trouble_v with_o abundance_n of_o smoke_n and_o there_o be_v filth_n about_o it_o fire_n upon_o the_o hearth_n have_v much_o smoke_n but_o fire_n above_o in_o the_o element_n of_o fire_n there_o be_v no_o smoke_n so_o your_o prayer_n when_o it_o lie_v upon_o your_o own_o hearth_n as_o i_o may_v say_v there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o smoke_n but_o when_o it_o get_v once_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v its_o element_n and_o it_o be_v free_v from_o all_o its_o smoke_n or_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n body_n so_o long_o as_o he_o live_v here_o upon_o the_o earth_n he_o be_v feeble_a and_o weak_a and_o many_o time_n sickly_a assoon_o as_o he_o be_v come_v into_o heaven_n all_o his_o weakness_n be_v take_v away_o and_o his_o body_n be_v in_o heaven_n it_o be_v present_o glorify_v and_o strength_n put_v upon_o it_o and_o all_o his_o disease_n be_v go_v so_o it_o be_v with_o our_o prayer_n so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v here_o below_o in_o our_o own_o bosom_n they_o be_v full_a of_o weakness_n but_o assoon_o as_o our_o prayer_n be_v out_o of_o our_o mouth_n it_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v in_o heaven_n it_o be_v glorify_v the_o weakness_n be_v now_o do_v away_o oh_o it_o be_v a_o glorify_a prayer_n when_o once_o it_o be_v go_v from_o you_o it_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n unto_o all_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a to_o be_v not_o only_o in_o for_o acceptance_n my_o poor_a prayer_n labour_v with_o many_o weakness_n then_o when_o a_o truth_n come_v from_o christ_n shall_v not_o i_o accept_v of_o it_o what_o though_o the_o minister_n or_o preacher_n that_o speak_v it_o labour_n with_o this_o or_o that_o weakness_n there_o be_v pride_n or_o there_o be_v some_o miscarriage_n in_o the_o delivery_n or_o the_o like_a shall_v the_o lord_n christ_n take_v my_o prayer_n labour_v under_o infirmity_n and_o accept_v thereof_o and_o carry_v it_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o father_n for_o acceptance_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o fail_n of_o my_o duty_n and_o shall_v not_o i_o accept_v of_o truth_n that_o come_v from_o christ_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o fail_n of_o the_o poor_a messenger_n that_o bring_v it_o you_o now_o you_o that_o say_v you_o do_v doubt_n of_o god_n love_n you_o do_v fear_v your_o own_o condition_n because_o of_o temptation_n only_o but_o because_o you_o be_v afraid_a they_o be_v the_o of_o and_o i_o have_v a_o inheritance_n in_o heaven_n that_o thief_n can_v break_v through_o and_o steal_v away_o satan_n may_v take_v away_o my_o spending-money_n my_o spend_a comfort_n that_o i_o and_o it_o be_v only_a faith_n that_o bring_v christ_n and_o the_o soul_n together_o in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o when_o christ_n come_v in_o satan_n go_v out_o but_o you_o will_v say_v quest_n i_o know_v it_o be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o happy_a so_o to_o answer_v satan_n temptation_n as_o i_o may_v not_o yield_v but_o oh_o that_o i_o may_v not_o be_v lead_v into_o any_o say_v the_o psalmist_n and_o when_o satan_n see_v a_o poor_a ignorant_a soul_n that_o walk_v in_o the_o dark_a say_v he_o here_o be_v a_o fit_a prey_n for_o i_o oh_o therefore_o you_o that_o be_v christ_n take_v a_o candle_n that_o be_v light_v and_o only_o blow_v out_o the_o candle_n the_o candle_n be_v easy_o light_v again_o but_o when_o the_o candle_n be_v out_o take_v it_o and_o put_v it_o into_o the_o water_n and_o then_o it_o be_v not_o so_o easy_o light_v again_o so_o now_o a_o temptation_n come_v and_o you_o blow_v it_o out_o with_o a_o resolution_n and_o you_o will_v yield_v to_o it_o alas_o it_o be_v easy_o light_v again_o but_o now_o take_v this_o candle_n take_v this_o temptation_n and_o come_v and_o dip_v it_o in_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o easy_o light_v again_o so_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o prevent_v temptation_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v never_o rest_v alone_o in_o resolve_v but_o oh_o take_v your_o possess_v your_o heart_n much_o with_o the_o mercy_n and_o privilege_n of_o suffer_v for_o the_o cause_n truth_n name_n and_o way_n of_o christ_n to_o you_o it_o be_v give_v not_o only_o to_o unto_o those_o that_o do_v acknowledge_v and_o own_o the_o cause_n and_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n possess_v your_o heart_n much_o with_o the_o privilege_n and_o mercy_n of_o bear_v witness_n to_o the_o truth_n the_o cause_n and_o the_o good_a way_n of_o christ_n before_o your_o temptation_n come_v second_o answ_n 2_o if_o you_o will_v bear_v off_o the_o blow_n of_o this_o temptation_n be_v sure_a that_o you_o look_v upon_o both_o side_n of_o your_o suffering_n or_o bear_v witness_n to_o the_o truth_n cause_n or_o way_n of_o christ_n the_o dark_a side_n and_o the_o before_o and_o he_o do_v give_v they_o more_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n than_o they_o have_v before_o now_o satan_n come_v and_o hold_v forth_o the_o suffering_n he_o make_v mention_n of_o the_o suffering_n but_o he_o hide_v the_o strength_n and_o the_o consolation_n either_o satan_n hold_v forth_o the_o suffer_v alone_o or_o else_o if_o he_o do_v mention_v any_o strength_n or_o comfort_n weaken_v all_o these_o our_o faith_n and_o how_o we_o shall_v bear_v off_o all_o these_o blow_n but_o there_o may_v be_v yet_o some_o temptation_n possible_o that_o do_v not_o fall_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o these_o temptation_n these_o direction_n be_v point_v against_o these_o particular_a temptation_n but_o i_o have_v other_o temptation_n that_o do_v fall_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o these_o whereby_o satan_n labour_v to_o weaken_v my_o faith_n and_o to_o make_v my_o faith_n to_o fail_v what_o general_a rule_n and_o direction_n may_v be_v give_v by_o which_o a_o man_n shall_v so_o walk_v as_o that_o satan_n may_v not_o make_v his_o faith_n to_o fail_v in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o temptation_n first_n answ_n 1_o before_o your_o temptation_n come_v while_o you_o be_v upon_o even_a ground_n study_v and_o look_v much_o into_o the_o scripture_n and_o into_o every_o corner_n and_o nook_n thereof_o as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v lay_v and_o treasure_v up_o promise_n and_o word_n suitable_a to_o every_o condition_n let_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n dwell_v in_o you_o rich_o that_o so_o when_o a_o temptation_n come_v you_o may_v have_v a_o word_n suitable_a at_o hand_n and_o this_o will_v help_v you_o to_o bear_v off_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o temptation_n when_o it_o come_v second_o answ_n 2_o either_o a_o particular_a word_n and_o promise_n do_v come_v unt_n you_o or_o it_o do_v not_o in_o the_o time_n of_o your_o temptation_n if_o it_o do_v come_v unto_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o you_o dont_fw-fr '_o measure_n yourselves_o or_o your_o condition_n by_o the_o warmth_n and_o life_n and_o inlargment_n of_o your_o heart_n which_o you_o have_v at_o the_o come_n in_o of_o the_o word_n and_o if_o a_o particular_a word_n or_o scripture_n and_o promise_n do_v not_o come_v unto_o you_o in_o the_o time_n of_o your_o temptation_n dont_fw-fr measure_n yourselves_o and_o your_o condition_n by_o the_o straightness_n and_o deadness_n of_o your_o heart_n which_o you_o have_v at_o that_o time_n when_o a_o particular_a word_n do_v not_o come_v three_o if_o temptaion_n come_v answ_n 3_o look_v much_o unto_o the_o infirmity_n of_o jesus_n christ_n not_o the_o sinful_a infirmity_n for_o so_o he_o have_v none_o but_o he_o have_v many_o other_o infirmity_n and_o you_o know_v what_o the_o spouse_n in_o the_o time_n of_o desertion_n say_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o canticle_n his_o left_a hand_n be_v under_o my_o head_n and_o with_o his_o right_a hand_n he_o do_v embrace_v i_o the_o right_a hand_n be_v a_o hand_n of_o power_n and_o the_o left_a hand_n be_v a_o hand_n of_o weakness_n and_o in_o the_o time_n of_o desertion_n and_o temptation_n it_o be_v a_o great_a relief_n to_o a_o poor_a soul_n to_o consider_v the_o infirmity_n of_o jesus_n christ_n his_o left_a hand_n be_v under_o our_o head_n then_o as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v enlarge_v in_o heart_n it_o be_v good_a to_o consider_v of_o christ_n example_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v humble_v under_o his_o enlargement_n so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v in_o desertion_n or_o temptation_n it_o be_v good_a for_o to_o think_v of_o christ_n infirmity_n that_o so_o he_o may_v not_o be_v overwhelm_v or_o cast_v down_o too_o much_o four_o if_o temptation_n do_v come_v be_v sure_a of_o this_o answ_n 4_o that_o you_o do_v conclude_v it_o be_v no_o temptation_n satan_n tempt_v and_o then_o he_o tempt_v a_o man_n to_o think_v it_o be_v no_o temptation_n so_o long_o as_o a_o poor_a soul_n think_v it_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n his_o heart_n be_v bear_v up_o with_o comfort_n and_o he_o say_v it_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o it_o will_v be_v over_o short_o and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n will_v pity_v i_o for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o so_o his_o heart_n be_v bear_v up_o with_o comfort_n wait_v upon_o god_n but_o if_o the_o devil_n can_v get_v a_o man_n so_o far_o as_o to_o make_v he_o think_v it_o be_v no_o temptation_n but_o worse_a than_o a_o temptation_n then_o his_o heart_n fail_v and_o his_o faith_n fail_v therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o if_o a_o temptation_n come_v do_v conclude_v it_o be_v no_o temptation_n but_o say_v oh_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n and_o therefore_o i_o will_v wait_v on_o god_n five_o if_o temptation_n come_v answ_n 5_o remember_v thy_o own_o soul_n of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n with_o thou_o god_n way_n
