by_o see_v in_o each_o mix_a company_n and_o populous_a congregation_n to_o which_o we_o preach_v it_o be_v find_v among_o christ_n hearer_n it_o be_v find_v among_o the_o apostle_n hearer_n and_o may_v also_o be_v find_v among_o we_o the_o consideration_n whereof_o serve_v for_o the_o instruction_n both_o of_o preacher_n &_o people_n 1._o of_o preacher_n to_o comfort_v they_o and_o to_o encourage_v they_o in_o their_o labour_n when_o they_o see_v they_o unprofitable_a unto_o a_o great_a number_n christ_n speak_v this_o parable_n especial_o of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o hearer_n he_o teach_v the_o true_a word_n of_o god_n &_o in_o the_o best_a manner_n that_o may_v be_v yet_o do_v he_o not_o profit_v all_o his_o hearer_n he_o have_v 4._o sort_n whereof_o three_o be_v no_o better_o than_o if_o they_o hear_v not_o at_o all_o the_o devil_n be_v very_o subtle_a and_o this_o be_v one_o of_o his_o subtlety_n whereby_o he_o deceive_v many_o people_n to_o their_o perdition_n first_o he_o labour_v by_o all_o mean_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o keep_v they_o from_o hear_v because_o he_o know_v it_o be_v god_n ordinance_n and_o be_v afraid_a lest_o it_o be_v powerful_a in_o they_o but_o if_o he_o can_v keep_v they_o back_o from_o hear_v he_o deceive_v they_o with_o this_o conceit_n that_o any_o kind_n of_o formal_a hear_n will_v serve_v their_o turn_n but_o do_v not_o herein_o believe_v the_o father_n of_o lie_n believe_v christ_n who_o be_v the_o way_n the_o life_n and_o the_o truth_n he_o tell_v you_o that_o there_o be_v 3._o sort_n of_o hearer_n which_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v only_o one_o sort_n among_o 4._o shall_v be_v save_v and_o therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o what_o kind_n of_o hearer_n you_o be_v and_o do_v not_o cortent_n yourselves_o with_o that_o hear_n that_o shall_v not_o edify_v your_o soul_n now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o several_a kind_n in_o particular_a and_o first_o let_v we_o see_v who_o be_v they_o which_o receive_v the_o seed_n on_o the_o highway_n some_o hearer_n be_v compare_v to_o such_o ground_n you_o know_v that_o if_o land_n lie_v by_o the_o highway_n side_n or_o a_o highway_n lie_v through_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o plough_v field_n some_o seed_n in_o the_o sow_a will_v fall_v on_o the_o highway_n and_o so_o be_v lose_v thereunto_o be_v some_o hearer_n compare_v and_o that_o very_o fit_o for_o first_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v not_o keep_v several_a and_o private_a but_o lie_v open_a and_o common_a to_o all_o traveller_n and_o passenger_n so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v not_o enclose_v and_o keep_v several_a for_o heavenly_a thing_n but_o lie_v open_a to_o all_o tentation_n and_o suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n to_o all_o enticement_n of_o the_o world_n and_o to_o all_o idle_a thought_n &_o vain_a imagination_n and_o that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o hear_v again_o as_o the_o highway_n be_v so_o tread_a and_o trample_v by_o the_o foot_n of_o passenger_n that_o it_o can_v cover_v the_o seed_n or_o if_o it_o shall_v cover_v the_o seed_n yet_o the_o trample_a will_n so_o harden_v the_o soil_n as_o the_o seed_n can_v never_o sprout_v so_o these_o man_n heart_n be_v so_o harden_v by_o wander_a thought_n both_o in_o and_o immediate_o after_o hear_v as_o the_o word_n can_v enter_v or_o at_o least_o can_v take_v any_o root_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o as_o corn_n sow_v in_o the_o highway_n will_v never_o yield_v crop_n like_o other_o ground_n so_o these_o hearer_n will_v never_o yield_v such_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n as_o 19_o other_o do_v but_o who_o be_v these_o
christ_n body_n have_v they_o more_o holiness_n or_o more_o virtue_n in_o they_o they_o christ_n body_n have_v see_v the_o devil_n come_v to_o hearer_n let_v we_o before_o we_o hear_v and_o afterward_o we_o have_v hear_v arm_v ourselves_o against_o he_o 2._o the_o devil_n practice_n he_o take_v the_o word_n out_o of_o their_o heart_n the_o heart_n be_v not_o here_o take_v strict_o and_o proper_o but_o general_o for_o the_o mind_n and_o affection_n yet_o can_v the_o devil_n immediate_o direct_o &_o by_o himself_o work_v upon_o the_o soul_n or_o heart_n of_o man_n that_o belong_v only_o unto_o god_n who_o alone_o be_v the_o searcher_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o devil_n work_v immediate_o indirect_o &_o by_o mean_n even_o by_o external_a object_n outward_a sense_n and_o corporal_a fantasy_n he_o take_v the_o word_n out_o of_o the_o hart_n by_o interrupt_v the_o fantasy_n and_o make_v it_o unfit_a to_o convey_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o understanding_n or_o to_o the_o heart_n and_o by_o convey_v other_o thought_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o turn_v the_o mind_n another_o way_n so_o as_o it_o shall_v no_o long_o affect_v the_o word_n nor_o think_v of_o it_o any_o more_o neither_o can_v he_o take_v it_o by_o violence_n without_o their_o like_n that_o hear_v it_o but_o with_o their_o consent_n he_o take_v it_o only_o from_o they_o who_o be_v careless_a hearer_n who_o never_o suffer_v it_o to_o sink_v deep_a into_o their_o heart_n but_o be_v like_a to_o the_o high_a way_n side_n do_v not_o cover_v it_o with_o the_o moist_a mould_n of_o holy_a affection_n yea_o he_o take_v it_o from_o those_o who_o never_o have_v any_o great_a love_n unto_o it_o and_o therefore_o may_v easy_o be_v persuade_v to_o let_v he_o take_v it_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o his_o practice_n christ_n in_o the_o propound_v of_o the_o parable_n compare_v he_o to_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n because_o as_o they_o will_v follow_v the_o sour_a and_o will_v pick_v up_o that_o which_o lie_v by_o the_o high_a way_n side_n or_o any_o other_o place_n uncover_v so_o the_o devil_n haunt_v the_o assembly_n where_o the_o word_n be_v preach_v that_o he_o may_v take_v from_o the_o hearer_n that_o which_o have_v be_v teach_v yea_o in_o this_o respect_n the_o devil_n be_v far_o worse_a than_o any_o fowl_n they_o eat_v the_o seed_n of_o necessity_n because_o they_o want_v other_o food_n to_o nourish_v they_o but_o he_o of_o malice_n he_o need_v it_o not_o it_o do_v no_o good_a to_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o take_v it_o away_o not_o to_o do_v himself_o any_o good_a thereby_o but_o to_o do_v they_o harm_n from_o who_o he_o take_v it_o again_o the_o bird_n be_v soon_o satisfy_v and_o that_o with_o a_o little_a if_o they_o have_v once_o eat_v their_o fill_n they_o fly_v away_o and_o leave_v the_o rest_n though_o it_o lie_v uncover_v but_o the_o devil_n be_v never_o satisfy_v till_o he_o have_v pick_v up_o every_o grain_n that_o be_v not_o cover_v in_o thr_fw-mi that_o hear_v careless_o till_o they_o alter_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o hear_n he_o will_v not_o be_v keep_v from_o they_o see_v then_o what_o a_o enemy_n the_o devil_n be_v to_o hinder_v the_o efficacy_n of_o god_n word_n in_o man_n heart_n as_o the_o preacher_n labour_v to_o cast_v the_o word_n into_o the_o heart_n so_o be_v to_o take_v it_o out_o he_o thrust_v many_o evil_a thing_n into_o the_o heart_n he_o put_v treason_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o judas_n to_o betray_v christ_n he_o fill_v the_o heart_n of_o ananias_n to_o lie_v unto_o 3._o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o also_o do_v he_o keep_v all_o manner_n of_o good_a from_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o one_o he_o will_v make_v we_o bad_a by_o the_o other_o he_o will_v hinder_v we_o from_o be_v good_a except_o it_o be_v in_o pray_v he_o do_v not_o trouble_v a_o man_n so_o much_o in_o any_o business_n as_o in_o hear_v of_o god_n word_n because_o he_o be_v afraid_a lest_o man_n shall_v be_v convert_v and_o save_v thereby_o this_o his_o practice_n be_v evident_o see_v in_o many_o it_o appear_v by_o the_o event_n that_o he_o take_v the_o word_n from_o many_o of_o our_o hearer_n for_o when_o the_o people_n have_v hear_v the_o preacher_n speak_v a_o whole_a hour_n together_o and_o deliver_v many_o profitable_a point_n of_o doctrine_n and_o that_o very_o plain_o yet_o few_o can_v repeat_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o many_o will_v say_v they_o like_v he_o well_o he_o be_v a_o good_a man_n and_o make_v a_o very_a good_a sermon_n yet_o can_v tell_v one_o word_n that_o he_o speak_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n hereof_o the_o devil_n have_v take_v it_o out_o of_o their_o heart_n and_o head_n report_n to_o they_o a_o humane_a history_n tell_v they_o some_o strange_a news_n or_o a_o tale_n for_o their_o worldly_a profit_n or_o corporal_a health_n they_o will_v keep_v it_o well_o enough_o and_o at_o any_o time_n and_o in_o any_o company_n will_v relate_v it_o very_o ready_o but_o teach_v they_o a_o mystery_n of_o that_o the_o one_o will_v never_o profit_v their_o soul_n nor_o further_o their_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v not_o take_v it_o from_o they_o he_o be_v afraid_a lest_o the_o other_o many_o and_o therefore_o as_o when_o you_o plough_v and_o sow_v your_o ground_n you_o rid_v up_o not_o only_o one_o kind_n of_o thorn_n and_o briar_n but_o likewise_o all_o of_o each_o kind_n so_o when_o you_o hear_v the_o word_n expel_v out_o of_o your_o heart_n not_o only_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o one_o kind_n but_o likewise_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o each_o kind_n it_o be_v lamentable_a to_o see_v how_o fond_o people_n deceive_v themselves_o herein_o many_o man_n do_v harbour_v one_o noisome_a lust_n one_o corrupt_a affection_n or_o other_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o never_o have_v choose_v he_o to_o be_v one_o of_o the_o twelve_o he_o hear_v his_o sermon_n live_v a_o long_a time_n civil_o and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o other_o yet_o because_o covetousness_n let_v not_o thy_o heart_n be_v think_v on_o any_o by-matter_n but_o only_o attend_v to_o that_o hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n and_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v bless_v by_o thy_o hear_n 2._o again_o note_v hence_o more_o special_o the_o quality_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n who_o hear_v profitable_o they_o hear_v with_o a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n it_o be_v not_o any_o kind_n of_o heart_n that_o will_v make_v your_o hear_n profitable_a it_o must_v be_v a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n though_o thou_o shall_v hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n yet_o unless_o it_o be_v a_o good_a heart_n it_o will_v little_o avail_v thou_o for_o in_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o heart_n consist_v a_o main_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o hearer_n and_o some_o of_o the_o former_a those_o which_o be_v compare_v to_o stony_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n for_o they_o be_v say_v not_o only_o to_o hear_v but_o also_o to_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n yet_o be_v they_o not_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n they_o be_v hard_a and_o stony_a and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o word_n to_o take_v root_a deep_a enough_o and_o those_o that_o be_v resemble_v to_o thorny_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n yet_o be_v their_o heart_n not_o good_a they_o be_v full_a of_o worldly_a care_n and_o carnal_a delight_n which_o afterward_o choke_v the_o word_n but_o these_o receive_v it_o with_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n agathe_v and_o therefore_o do_v both_o retain_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o describe_v of_o the_o quality_n of_o this_o their_o hart_n christ_n here_o use_v two_o word_n which_o be_v of_o a_o near_a yet_o not_o of_o the_o same_o signification_n there_o be_v some_o difference_n ketwixt_n they_o the_o one_o proper_o signify_v fair_a beautiful_a seemly_a and_o comely_a the_o other_o signify_v good_a and_o excellent_a the_o one_o note_v the_o outward_a apparent_a quality_n the_o other_o express_v the_o inward_a nature_n and_o inherent_a property_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o so_o here_o by_o be_v locum_fw-la signify_v that_o the_o heart_n of_o these_o hearer_n be_v good_a each_o way_n both_o outward_o before_o man_n manifest_v itself_o to_o be_v good_a by_o open_a profession_n by_o abundance_n of_o fruit_n and_o by_o constant_a perseverance_n and_o also_o inward_o in_o itself_o and_o before_o god_n by_o a_o sincere_a sanctification_n and_o holy_a disposition_n and_o so_o their_o heart_n differ_v from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o former_a hearer_n for_o though_o they_o in_o receyve_v the_o worde_n with_o joy_n in_o believe_v it_o and_o bring_v forth_o some_o fruit_n of_o it_o do_v make_v some_o fair_a show_n and_o give_v some_o outward_a sign_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o sanctify_v within_o and_o they_o make_v those_o fair_a show_n but_o for_o a_o time_n afterwards_o they_o revolt_a in_o time_n of_o tentation_n or_o fail_v in_o their_o fruit_n through_o worldly_a care_n and_o voluptuousness_n bewray_v the_o filthiness_n of_o their_o heart_n those_o than_o that_o will_v be_v good_a hearer_n must_v have_v good_a heart_n both_o way_n both_o inward_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o inclination_n as_o also_o outward_o before_o man_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o testimony_n as_o be_v the_o heart_n so_o will_v the_o hear_n be_v good_a meet_a will_v not_o nourish_v that_o man_n body_n who_o have_v a_o bad_a stomach_n that_o can_v well_o
they_o may_v be_v blameless_a in_o the_o day_n of_o 1._o the_o lord._n have_v he_o not_o promise_v to_o make_v a_o everlasting_a covenant_n with_o his_o people_n and_o never_o to_o turn_v away_o from_o they_o to_o do_v they_o good_a and_o to_o put_v his_o fear_n into_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o depart_v from_o he_o for_o this_o purpose_n do_v augustine_n 12._o allege_v
