no_o fault_n in_o themselves_o they_o be_v never_o proud_a in_o all_o their_o life_n they_o know_v as_o much_o as_o any_o of_o they_o all_o can_v tell_v they_o and_o they_o have_v not_o bring_v up_o so_o many_o child_n they_o trow_v but_o that_o they_o can_v tell_v how_o to_o be_v save_v that_o never_o wrong_v any_o in_o all_o their_o life_n and_o that_o hope_v in_o god_n they_o shall_v be_v save_v for_o their_o good_a life_n and_o good_a meaning_n all_o these_o ignorant_o never_o understand_v and_o therefore_o only_o boast_v of_o much_o because_o want_v knowledge_n total_o they_o can_v know_v their_o own_o want_n wherefore_o if_o any_o among_o you_o be_v such_o and_o out_o of_o ignorance_n so_o well-conceited_n of_o himself_o let_v he_o not_o pretend_v to_o be_v regenerate_v in_o vain_a he_o claim_v god_n kingdom_n if_o he_o be_v not_o change_v and_o become_v another_o man_n yea_o all_o those_o that_o though_o they_o have_v more_o knowledge_n then_o to_o brag_v thus_o yet_o never_o feel_v themselves_o to_o have_v be_v the_o child_n of_o wrath_n nor_o be_v never_o pain_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o their_o own_o sinfulness_n these_o also_o i_o affirm_v to_o be_v unregenerate_a and_o so_o remain_v can_v be_v save_v yea_o all_o that_o allow_v wicked_a thought_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o never_o take_v care_n to_o see_v and_o lament_v the_o evil_a conceit_n of_o their_o inward_a man_n but_o rather_o serve_v sin_n in_o the_o lust_n of_o it_o and_o please_v themselves_o in_o think_v of_o that_o which_o for_o fear_n or_o shame_n they_o do_v not_o dare_v to_o accomplish_v those_o also_o have_v no_o part_n in_o god_n kingdom_n as_o the_o case_n go_v with_o they_o hitherto_o yea_o all_o that_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o small_a sin_n which_o the_o world_n do_v not_o take_v notice_n of_o but_o pass_v over_o such_o trespass_n without_o make_v any_o matter_n of_o they_o or_o trouble_v themselves_o to_o bewail_v they_o these_o have_v cause_n to_o fearâ—_n that_o heaven_n be_v fast_o lock_v upon_o they_o yea_o all_o that_o allow_v themselves_o for_o gain_n profit_n or_o pleasure_n sake_n in_o any_o one_o sinful_a action_n secret_a or_o open_a excuse_v and_o shift_v and_o turn_v themselves_o into_o all_o shape_n to_o make_v themselves_o not_o to_o know_v it_o to_o be_v sinful_a and_o labour_v not_o to_o be_v move_v with_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o word_n &_o check_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n but_o hold_v still_o their_o resolution_n that_o that_o thing_n they_o must_v needs_o do_v they_o can_v choose_v but_o do_v though_o their_o conscience_n will_v willing_o check_v they_o for_o the_o same_o be_v they_o not_o by_o they_o put_v to_o silence_n all_o these_o be_v to_o number_v themselves_o among_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o such_o as_o if_o god_n be_v as_o he_o be_v most_o perfect_o just_a can_v be_v save_v while_o they_o abide_v such_o but_o most_o of_o all_o those_o that_o live_v in_o open_a gross_a sin_n and_o yet_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o hope_n of_o do_v well_o enough_o because_o other_o live_v as_o bad_a as_o they_o and_o because_o they_o doubt_v not_o to_o over-entreate_a god_n with_o the_o repentance_n of_o the_o last_o hour_n these_o be_v far_o off_o from_o regeneration_n and_o remain_v in_o a_o dangerous_a and_o damnable_a estate_n so_o that_o i_o doubt_v not_o to_o proclaim_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n that_o so_o continue_v christ_n shall_v profit_v they_o nothing_o christ_n shall_v never_o bring_v they_o to_o heaven_n now_o therefore_o if_o pillar_n and_o foundation_n thereof_o and_o if_o he_o have_v no_o friend_n nor_o mean_n to_o trust_v in_o yet_o he_o give_v not_o over_o hope_n but_o as_o david_n can_v comfort_v himself_o in_o god_n enjoy_n of_o god_n hereafter_o these_o thing_n come_v to_o his_o mind_n do_v even_o sweet_o enlarge_v his_o heart_n and_o make_v his_o soul_n to_o open_v itself_o to_o take_v contentment_n in_o they_o sometime_o even_o as_o sensible_o as_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v here_o below_o and_o often_o time_n more_o the_o virtue_n of_o joy_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v rule_v his_o natural_a passion_n of_o joy_n and_o cause_v it_o to_o be_v provoke_v by_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o subministre_v unto_o his_o fancy_n by_o his_o sense_n but_o to_o his_o understanding_n by_o his_o faith_n god_n promise_n be_v sweet_a to_o he_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n have_v a_o comfortable_a relish_n in_o his_o soul_n and_o he_o find_v a_o life_n indeed_o in_o know_v that_o his_o life_n be_v always_o he_o maintain_v in_o himself_o a_o be_v displease_v against_o sin_n but_o oftentimes_o it_o do_v even_o sting_v his_o soul_n to_o consider_v how_o he_o have_v offend_v his_o god_n and_o though_o he_o do_v know_v himself_o out_o of_o the_o danger_n of_o damnation_n yet_o the_o love_a of_o god_n break_v his_o heart_n and_o he_o can_v then_o with_o a_o still_a and_o quiet_a mourning_n sigh_n and_o mourn_v and_o weep_v for_o sin_n when_o he_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o have_v any_o fear_n of_o damnation_n and_o though_o his_o grief_n this_o way_n be_v not_o every_o day_n alike_o in_o quantity_n nor_o insensiblenes_n yet_o usual_o no_o day_n pass_v he_o wherein_o he_o do_v not_o seek_v to_o draw_v his_o heart_n to_o a_o relent_a remorse_n for_o his_o sin_n though_o his_o offence_n be_v either_o unknown_a to_o the_o world_n or_o such_o as_o the_o world_n if_o it_o do_v know_v make_v no_o reckon_n of_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v touch_v with_o they_o it_o often_o do_v even_o ache_v and_o be_v trouble_v when_o he_o remember_v his_o past_a or_o present_a transgression_n yea_o and_o he_o never_o remember_v they_o but_o he_o will_v fain_o have_v it_o ache_v even_o as_o nature_n have_v frame_v he_o so_o that_o he_o can_v but_o grieve_v at_o natural_a inconvenience_n if_o they_o befall_v he_o for_o the_o passion_n be_v not_o simple_o at_o the_o command_n of_o the_o will_n in_o their_o work_n but_o alone_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o measure_n so_o grace_n do_v in_o such_o sort_n rule_v his_o hart_n that_o spiritual_a inconvenience_n and_o chief_o sin_n can_v but_o my_o brethren_n be_v a_o regenerate_a man_n heart_n adorn_v in_o all_o the_o power_n of_o it_o understanding_n will_n conscience_n the_o principal_a and_o imagination_n memory_n and_o affection_n the_o inferior_a not_o so_o perfect_o i_o confess_v that_o the_o contrary_a vice_n do_v not_o often_o show_v themselves_o interrupt_v the_o work_n of_o these_o virtue_n and_o obscure_v and_o darken_v sometime_o to_o be_v strong_a sometime_o weak_a and_o he_o be_v true_o disquiet_v with_o the_o vice_n that_o be_v opposite_a to_o these_o virtue_n as_o with_o disease_n of_o body_n and_o with_o the_o infirmity_n of_o these_o grace_n as_o with_o weakness_n of_o his_o leg_n and_o arm_n when_o he_o shall_v employ_v himself_o in_o any_o work_n or_o business_n his_o knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v obscure_v with_o ignorance_n and_o often_o assail_v with_o objection_n his_o faith_n in_o god_n and_o in_o his_o word_n have_v its_o faint_n his_o conscience_n feel_v some_o prick_v of_o guiltiness_n his_o will_n be_v not_o without_o its_o rebellious_a motion_n his_o thought_n be_v dull_a to_o god_n often_o time_n and_o his_o memory_n be_v turn_v to_o other_o thing_n with_o the_o neglect_v of_o god_n his_o love_n be_v cold_a his_o fear_n be_v change_v into_o a_o kind_n of_o stupidity_n his_o confidence_n be_v shake_v his_o joy_n weaken_v and_o to_o his_o seem_a little_a less_o than_o dead_a and_o his_o grief_n be_v even_o stop_v and_o the_o stream_n of_o his_o tear_n dry_v up_o or_o divert_v but_o alack_o he_o find_v this_o so_o to_o be_v and_o be_v vex_v at_o it_o he_o perceive_v it_o and_o discern_v it_o with_o pain_n and_o dislike_n and_o he_o can_v tell_v well_o that_o sometime_o it_o have_v be_v otherwise_o with_o he_o and_o why_o be_v he_o thus_o now_o why_o be_v he_o so_o alter_v from_o himself_o indeed_o he_o have_v these_o grace_n never_o so_o plentiful_o but_o that_o he_o see_v defect_n and_o know_v there_o shall_v and_o desire_n there_o may_v be_v more_o but_o yet_o when_o grace_n be_v a_o little_a weaken_a over_o that_o it_o be_v he_o find_v it_o before_o long_o and_o seek_v to_o restore_v it_o again_o to_o its_o former_a and_o a_o strong_a strength_n chap._n vii_o all_o to_o examine_v themselves_o whither_o they_o be_v regenerate_v yea_o or_o no._n and_o so_o brethren_n have_v i_o do_v my_o endeavour_n to_o explain_v this_o most_o necessary_a doctrine_n of_o regeneration_n without_o which_o our_o saviour_n little_o less_o than_o swear_v that_o no_o man_n can_v be_v save_v give_v i_o leave_v now_o i_o pray_v you_o to_o apply_v the_o point_n a_o little_o close_a to_o your_o conscience_n without_o which_o the_o word_n will_v want_v much_o of_o its_o efficacy_n to_o your_o good_a use_v no._n 1._o to_o all_o that_o they_o inquire_v into_o themselves_o whether_o they_o be_v regenerate_v yea_o or_o no._n and_o in_o this_o application_n i_o will_v address_v my_o speech_n first_o to_o all_o indifferent_o regenerate_v or_o not_o then_o to_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o last_o to_o the_o regenerate_a special_o according_a to_o their_o different_a estate_n brethren_n you_o hear_v and_o i_o be_o persuade_v you_o do_v believe_v that_o that_o our_o saviour_n speak_v very_o very_o unless_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v you_o therefore_o persuade_v all_o of_o you_o to_o descend_v into_o your_o own_o soul_n and_o well_o to_o prosecute_v the_o examination_n of_o your_o own_o estate_n whether_o you_o be_v as_o yet_o regenerate_v yea_o or_o no._n tell_v i_o i_o say_v in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n whosoever_o thou_o be_v that_o stand_v here_o before_o the_o lord_n be_v thou_o regenerate_v yea_o or_o no_o it_o be_v very_o necessary_a to_o know_v at_o least_o wise_a whither_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o we_o to_o be_v save_v or_o not_o see_v of_o this_o life_n we_o have_v no_o further_a assurance_n then_o for_o the_o present_a moment_n and_o that_o we_o know_v all_o it_o must_v short_o have_v a_o end_n can_v it_o be_v any_o other_o then_o very_a madness_n to_o remain_v uncertain_a whether_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o our_o change_n for_o a_o better_a when_o change_n we_o must_v of_o necessity_n either_o for_o a_o better_a or_o worse_o it_o please_v we_o not_o to_o hang_v in_o uncertainty_n about_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v but_o for_o the_o twinkle_n of_o a_o eye_n will_v we_o make_v ourselves_o so_o foolish_a as_o to_o be_v content_a alone_o not_o to_o know_v what_o ill_o may_v befall_v we_o hereafter_o a_o impossibility_n of_o enter_v into_o heaven_n carry_v with_o it_o a_o certainty_n of_o fall_v into_o hell_n he_o that_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o former_a can_v but_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o latter_a wherefore_o again_o and_o again_o i_o exhort_v you_o see_v it_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v save_v without_o regeneration_n know_v you_o of_o your_o own_o estate_n so_o much_o whether_o you_o be_v regenerate_v yea_o or_o no._n and_o my_o brethren_n take_v heed_n of_o satisfy_v yourselves_o here_o in_o a_o matter_n of_o so_o much_o importance_n with_o wander_a conceit_n and_o uncertain_a probability_n let_v it_o not_o suffice_v you_o to_o think_v you_o be_v bear_v again_o rest_v not_o seek_v till_o you_o have_v conclude_v upon_o the_o matter_n undoubted_o one_o way_n or_o other_o and_o can_v say_v without_o all_o question_n either_o i_o be_o regenerate_v or_o i_o be_o not_o in_o very_a truth_n the_o unwillingnes_n to_o enter_v into_o this_o inquisition_n give_v occasion_n of_o vehement_a suspicion_n that_o one_o be_v not_o regenerate_v it_o be_v a_o sore_a presumption_n that_o a_o man_n have_v not_o that_o grace_n whereof_o he_o be_v not_o will_v with_o any_o seriousness_n and_o diligence_n to_o examine_v himself_o if_o he_o have_v it_o yea_o or_o no._n and_o let_v that_o man_n that_o be_v willing_a to_o put_v of_o this_o matter_n slight_o &_o to_o please_v himself_o in_o idle_a imagination_n say_v i_o hope_v i_o have_v be_v regenerate_v though_o he_o have_v never_o bestow_v pain_n to_o inquire_v into_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o hope_n let_v that_o man_n i_o say_v be_v even_o all_o most_o assure_v that_o he_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o regenerate_v a_o sound_n and_o well_o ground_a scholar_n fear_v not_o be_v examine_v in_o ground_n of_o learning_n a_o sufficient_a workman_n in_o any_o trade_n be_v never_o unwilling_a to_o come_v into_o trial_n and_o question_n about_o his_o skill_n only_a bungler_n only_a dunce_n abhor_v from_o all_o search_n and_o trial_n of_o their_o sufficiency_n a_o secret_a guiltiness_n of_o want_n cause_v a_o unwillingnes_n of_o be_v hard_o press_v to_o show_v what_o one_o have_v doubtless_o it_o be_v so_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o soul_n also_o the_o regenerate_a be_v willing_a to_o search_v out_o his_o estate_n because_o the_o goodness_n thereof_o do_v more_o clear_o appear_v by_o how_o much_o it_o be_v more_o often_o search_v but_o he_o that_o can_v away_o to_o stand_v ask_v and_o demand_v of_o himself_o and_o call_v for_o infallible_a proof_n of_o his_o be_v regenerate_v be_v therefore_o alone_o unwilling_a to_o put_v himself_o to_o the_o trouble_n of_o prove_v it_o because_o he_o be_v destitute_a of_o sufficient_a proof_n i_o say_v therefore_o unto_o thou_o thou_o must_v follow_v this_o inquiry_n close_o thou_o must_v not_o believe_v every_o thought_n of_o thy_o heart_n thou_o must_v have_v good_a assurance_n and_o good_a ground_n of_o good_a assurance_n afore_o thou_o be_v bold_a to_o call_v thyself_o a_o regenerate_a man_n the_o hart_n of_o man_n brethren_n be_v a_o very_a sea_n of_o guile_n every_o son_n of_o adam_n have_v a_o marvelous_a selfe-deceiving_a spirit_n self-love_n i_o say_v self-love_n and_o a_o desire_n of_o all_o good_a to_o ourselves_o make_v we_o too_o too_o credulous_a of_o our_o own_o condition_n for_o the_o most_o part_n because_o nature_n work_v in_o we_o a_o desire_n of_o be_v happy_a we_o be_v all_o too_o too_o willing_a to_o believe_v that_o we_o have_v those_o thing_n i_o mean_v it_o of_o spiritual_a thing_n without_o which_o we_o can_v be_v happy_a in_o truth_n for_o they_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n thou_o may_v answer_v he_o that_o that_o work_n of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n which_o move_v thou_o so_o to_o pray_v be_v a_o beginning_n of_o regeneration_n which_o shall_v undoubted_o be_v perfect_v if_o thou_o continue_v to_o pray_v and_o therefore_o that_o thou_o will_v not_o be_v hinder_v by_o such_o cavil_n for_o thou_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v say_v true_a when_o he_o say_v ho_o every_o one_o that_o thirst_v and_o see_v out_o of_o a_o persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o general_a promise_n thou_o addresse_v thyself_o to_o perform_v the_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n the_o second_o mean_n be_v a_o diligent_a hide_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n for_o see_v that_o be_v the_o seed_n of_o immortality_n if_o it_o be_v close_o lay_v up_o in_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o soul_n it_o will_v fructify_v to_o life_n this_o law_n be_v pure_a and_o it_o will_v purify_v it_o be_v perfect_a and_o it_o will_v convert_v the_o soul_n if_o like_o a_o plaster_n it_o be_v lay_v unto_o it_o let_v it_o be_v ingraff_v into_o you_o like_o a_o science_n and_o it_o will_v change_v the_o wild_a sap_n of_o your_o nature_n and_o make_v you_o able_a to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n of_o holiness_n a_o man_n than_o bury_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n in_o his_o hart_n when_o he_o do_v ponder_v and_o muse_v upon_o it_o when_o he_o set_v himself_o serious_o to_o consider_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o and_o to_o apply_v it_o unto_o his_o own_o soul_n take_v that_o that_o be_v general_o deliver_v as_o pertain_v to_o himself_o in_o special_a now_o the_o whole_a word_n must_v be_v thus_o whet_v upon_o the_o heart_n not_o the_o law_n alone_o for_o that_o of_o itself_o will_v breed_v nothing_o but_o miserable_a terror_n not_o the_o gospel_n alone_o for_o that_o find_v the_o heart_n unprepared_a to_o receive_v it_o in_o such_o ill_a ground_n will_v bring_v forth_o nothing_o but_o the_o stink_a weed_n of_o presumption_n but_o both_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n it_o so_o be_v temper_v together_o and_o obtain_v a_o joint_a work_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o their_o mutual_a force_n they_o may_v both_o produce_v the_o grace_n of_o sanctification_n so_o then_o if_o one_o will_v be_v regenerate_v he_o must_v take_v to_o himself_o the_o whole_a word_n of_o god_n he_o must_v set_v himself_o all_o alone_a to_o muse_v of_o it_o say_v
