that_o this_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n be_v a_o seal_n of_o god_n covenant_n whereby_o he_o bind_v himself_o to_o perform_v his_o promise_n make_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n for_o strengthen_v our_o faith_n therein_o that_o the_o outward_a sign_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v bread_n and_o wine_n by_o which_o be_v set_v forth_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o the_o worthy_a receiver_n by_o faith_n do_v partake_v of_o in_o this_o sacrament_n that_o whosoever_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o that_o every_o one_o be_v to_o examine_v himself_o lest_o he_o eat_v and_o drink_v judgement_n to_o himself_o have_v thus_o show_v what_o be_v that_o knowledge_n which_o for_o the_o three_o particular_a viz._n the_o trial_n of_o thy_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o true_a save_a knowledge_n thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o the_o property_n thereof_o some_o whereof_o be_v these_o 1_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v experimental_a whereby_o a_o christian_a have_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o what_o he_o know_v he_o have_v not_o only_o a_o general_n and_o a_o notional_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o own_o miserable_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribute_n as_o of_o his_o power_n in_o support_v he_o under_o his_o trial_n and_o temptation_n of_o his_o faithfulness_n in_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n unto_o he_o he_o have_v likewise_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o his_o own_o wretched_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o he_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v his_o saviour_n and_o redeemer_n and_o rest_v upon_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n etc._n etc._n 2_o true_a save_a knowledge_n be_v humble_a and_o join_v with_o meekness_n of_o spirit_n for_o the_o more_o true_a knowledge_n a_o man_n have_v the_o more_o he_o discern_v his_o own_o ignorance_n yea_o and_o vileness_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o therefore_o you_o shall_v find_v those_o christian_n who_o be_v most_o eminent_a both_o in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n to_o complain_v most_o as_o of_o bountiful_o and_o more_o willing_o because_o the_o stock_n out_o of_o which_o they_o give_v be_v prepare_v beforehand_o and_o it_o be_v a_o sacred_a stock_n by_o their_o voluntary_a set_v it_o apart_o to_o such_o a_o use_n their_o conscience_n will_v account_v it_o sacrilege_n to_o lay_v it_o out_o any_o other_o way_n if_o poor_a man_n that_o live_v by_o their_o day_n labour_n and_o servant_n that_o live_v on_o their_o wage_n will_v every_o lord_n day_n lie_v up_o some_o half-penny_n or_o penny_n for_o this_o end_n and_o purpose_n they_o may_v have_v without_o any_o sensible_a damage_n to_o themselves_o a_o stock_n for_o the_o poor_a how_o much_o great_a store_n will_v be_v for_o the_o poor_a if_o rich_a man_n according_a to_o god_n blessing_n on_o they_o will_v so_o do_v 2_o visit_v the_o sick_a and_o such_o as_o be_v otherwise_o restrain_v of_o liberty_n this_o we_o find_v practise_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o that_o upon_o the_o sabbath_n day_n after_o the_o public_a ordinance_n be_v end_v as_o mark._n 1_o 29_o 30._o where_o we_o read_v that_o our_o saviour_n with_o some_o of_o his_o apostle_n after_o they_o be_v come_v out_o of_o the_o synagogue_n go_v to_o visit_v peter_n wife_n mother_n who_o lie_v sick_a of_o a_o fever_n which_o show_v that_o christ_n account_v it_o a_o work_n of_o mercy_n suitable_a to_o the_o sabbath_n to_o visit_v the_o sick_a from_o whence_o we_o may_v learn_v as_o just_a occasion_n be_v offer_v to_o spend_v some_o time_n of_o the_o sabbath_n in_o visit_v the_o sick_a it_o be_v a_o especial_a work_n of_o mercy_n proper_a to_o the_o sabbath_n yea_o and_o a_o especial_a mean_n to_o fill_v our_o mind_n with_o spiritual_a meditation_n and_o our_o mouth_n with_o holy_a conference_n which_o be_v part_n of_o private_a sanctification_n of_o the_o sabbath_n what_o time_n therefore_o other_o spend_v in_o idleness_n or_o vain_a company_n or_o sit_v at_o street-door_n or_o walk_v abroad_o in_o the_o street_n and_o field_n let_v we_o spend_v in_o this_o and_o such_o like_a work_n of_o mercy_n direction_n for_o the_o right_a manner_n of_o visit_v the_o sick_a see_v in_o chap._n xix_o beside_o these_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o work_n of_o mercy_n which_o be_v command_v to_o be_v do_v on_o the_o lord_n day_n there_o be_v some_o thing_n which_o the_o lord_n permit_v unto_o we_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o weakness_n and_o infirmity_n of_o our_o body_n viz._n sleep_v food_n and_o apparel_n because_o we_o can_v with_o strength_n and_o delight_n spend_v the_o whole_a day_n in_o sabbath_n duty_n without_o competent_a rest_n food_n and_o apparel_n therefore_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o spend_v some_o time_n as_o in_o sleep_n so_o in_o apparel_v ourselves_o and_o in_o refresh_v our_o body_n with_o food_n which_o otherwise_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o faint_v but_o by_o a_o moderate_a use_n of_o these_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n we_o take_v in_o hand_n the_o more_o cheerful_o but_o herein_o two_o caution_n ought_v careful_o to_o be_v observe_v 1_o you_o must_v spend_v no_o more_o time_n about_o they_o than_o needs_o must_v wherefore_o your_o body_n be_v refresh_v with_o moderate_a sleep_n you_o ought_v to_o get_v up_o early_o on_o the_o lord_n day_n as_o about_o six_o or_o seven_o of_o the_o clock_n and_o to_o use_v all_o possible_a speed_n in_o dress_v yourselves_o and_o not_o to_o sit_v long_o than_o needs_o must_v at_o your_o meal_n that_o so_o you_o may_v have_v the_o more_o time_n for_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o service_n on_o his_o day_n and_o true_o since_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o good_a and_o gracious_a unto_o you_o as_o to_o afford_v you_o some_o part_n of_o his_o own_o day_n for_o the_o refreshment_n of_o your_o body_n far_o be_v it_o from_o you_o to_o abuse_v his_o goodness_n by_o lavish_v away_o more_o time_n therein_o than_o needs_o must_v second_o caution_n do_v they_o as_o sabbath-dayes-work_n which_o be_v do_v two_o way_n 1_o by_o do_v they_o for_o this_o end_n that_o thereby_o you_o may_v be_v the_o better_o enable_v to_o serve_v god_n thus_o when_o at_o your_o lie_v down_o the_o evening_n before_o the_o sabbath_n you_o desire_v god_n to_o give_v you_o quiet_a comfortable_a sleep_n that_o thereby_o your_o weak_a body_n may_v be_v refresh_v and_o you_o the_o better_o enable_v to_o serve_v he_o the_o next_o day_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o service_n this_o be_v a_o sabbath-sleep_n in_o like_a manner_n when_o you_o eat_v and_o drink_v for_o this_o very_a end_n that_o your_o body_n may_v be_v refresh_v and_o your_o spirit_n revive_v and_o you_o thereby_o the_o better_a enable_v with_o cheerfulness_n to_o serve_v god_n the_o remain_a part_n of_o the_o day_n attend_v with_o very_o excellent_a promise_v annex_v to_o encourage_v we_o with_o faith_n and_o confidence_n to_o call_v upon_o he_o 7_o as_o ask_v and_o it_o shall_v be_v give_v you_o seek_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v knock_v and_o it_o shall_v be_v open_v unto_o you_o etc._n etc._n 2_o by_o accustom_v ourselves_o to_o pray_v in_o our_o closet_n or_o private_a chamber_n we_o shall_v be_v the_o the_o sprinkle_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ._n it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o christ_n have_v shed_v his_o blood_n but_o there_o must_v be_v beside_o the_o shed_n of_o it_o the_o sprinkle_n of_o it_o christ_n blood_n be_v shed_v upon_o the_o cross_n yet_o all_o man_n be_v not_o reconcile_v unto_o god_n thereby_o and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n sure_o because_o that_o blood_n be_v not_o and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n unto_o thy_o soul_n comfort_v and_o true_o if_o thou_o will_v but_o consider_v that_o god_n respect_v his_o own_o goodness_n and_o not_o we_o in_o the_o offering_n of_o his_o son_n and_o that_o his_o grace_n be_v everyway_n most_o free_a this_o conceit_n of_o thy_o unworthiness_n can_v be_v no_o just_a plea_n against_o the_o apply_v of_o christ_n with_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n unto_o thy_o own_o soul_n comfort_n it_o shall_v rather_o be_v a_o encouragement_n unto_o thou_o because_o the_o more_o unworthy_a thou_o be_v in_o thy_o own_o sight_n and_o sense_n the_o more_o worthy_a thou_o be_v in_o the_o account_n of_o christ._n the_o great_a worthiness_n that_o any_o christian_n can_v here_o attain_v unto_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o own_o unworthiness_n 2_o thou_o who_o complain_v of_o thy_o unworthiness_n i_o will_v ask_v thou_o whether_o any_o man_n before_o he_o make_v application_n heart_n of_o his_o people_n will_v thou_o then_o know_v whether_o that_o faith_n thou_o pretend_v to_o be_v a_o true_a save_a faith_n try_v &_o examine_v it_o by_o the_o forementioned_a particular_n consider_v whether_o it_o be_v thus_o kind_o wrought_v in_o thou_o according_a to_o the_o ordinary_a method_n of_o god_n spirit_n if_o so_o then_o though_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n be_v very_o weak_a in_o thou_o yet_o thou_o have_v a_o comfortable_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o and_o so_o consequent_o have_v a_o sure_a evidence_n for_o heaven_n obj._n though_o i_o can_v deny_v these_o forementioned_a particular_n to_o be_v wrought_v in_o i_o yet_o notwithstanding_o i_o have_v no_o comfortable_a evidence_n and_o assurance_n of_o heaven_n nor_o of_o my_o interest_n in_o jesus_n christ._n ans._n for_o answer_v hereunto_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o three_o comfortable_a consideration_n 1_o a_o man_n may_v have_v the_o faith_n of_o adherence_n and_o dependence_n though_o he_o have_v not_o the_o faith_n of_o evidence_n and_o assurance_n for_o the_o better_a understanding_n whereof_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o twofold_a faith_n as_o divine_n distinguish_v viz._n the_o faith_n of_o adherence_n whereby_o we_o roll_n ourselves_o upon_o christ_n and_o rest_n upon_o he_o and_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o â—ife_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o the_o faith_n of_o evidence_n and_o assurance_n whereby_o we_o know_v and_o be_v assure_v of_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n and_o consequent_o of_o our_o right_n and_o title_n unto_o heaven_n this_o latter_a be_v the_o refleâ—_n act_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o a_o christian_a clear_o see_v his_o own_o happiness_n whereas_o the_o former_a be_v the_o direct_a act_n of_o the_o soul._n now_o a_o man_n may_v have_v the_o faith_n of_o adherence_n which_o be_v true_a justify_v faith_n that_o give_v he_o a_o interest_n in_o christ_n and_o a_o right_a to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o may_v want_v the_o faith_n of_o evidence_n and_o assurance_n so_o that_o he_o knowert_v not_o his_o own_o happiness_n as_o the_o child_n may_v true_o hang_v about_o the_o mother_n neck_n or_o cast_v itself_o into_o her_o arm_n and_o yet_o receive_v neither_o kiss_n nor_o smile_v from_o she_o so_o a_o poor_a soul_n may_v true_o roll_n itself_o upon_o christ_n cast_v itself_o into_o his_o arm_n and_o rest_n in_o his_o bosom_n which_o be_v true_a faith_n and_o yet_o have_v neither_o kiss_n nor_o smile_v from_o he_o therefore_o far_o be_v it_o from_o thou_o to_o question_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o faith_n mere_o for_o want_v of_o christ_n smile_v upon_o thou_o or_o to_o question_v thy_o faith_n of_o adherence_n because_o thou_o have_v not_o the_o faith_n of_o evidence_n and_o assurance_n 2_o assurance_n of_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n and_o of_o our_o future_a happiness_n though_o it_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o consolation_n of_o a_o christian_a yet_o not_o to_o his_o salvation_n though_o to_o his_o comfort_n yet_o not_o to_o his_o safety_n his_o condition_n may_v be_v safe_a though_o not_o very_o comfortable_a at_o present_a for_o a_o christian_n safety_n do_v not_o at_o all_o depend_v upon_o his_o assurance_n but_o upon_o his_o faith_n that_o christian_n that_o can_v by_o faith_n roll_n himself_o upon_o christ_n cast_v himself_o into_o his_o arm_n rest_v upon_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n yet_o have_v no_o comfortable_a assurance_n in_o their_o own_o soul_n of_o their_o interest_n in_o christ_n or_o of_o their_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n let_v such_o know_v that_o their_o condition_n may_v be_v good_a and_o safe_a for_o all_o that_o 3_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n be_v not_o so_o ordinary_a as_o many_o christian_n do_v imagine_v for_o indeed_o they_o be_v but_o for_o christian_n who_o do_v here_o attain_v to_o a_o clear_a evidence_n and_o full_a assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n such_o who_o the_o lord_n here_o call_v forth_o to_o hard_a service_n or_o great_a suffering_n to_o they_o he_o be_v please_v many_o time_n to_o give_v some_o clear_a evidence_n and_o assurance_n of_o their_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n for_o their_o better_a comfort_n and_o support_v thus_o many_o martyr_n have_v express_v their_o full_a assurance_n of_o a_o better_a life_n after_o this_o whereas_o such_o a_o measure_n be_v not_o usual_o grant_v to_o ordinary_a christian_n their_o trial_n be_v but_o fleabites_a in_o comparison_n of_o the_o other_o vi_o then_o especial_o act_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o thou_o as_o 1_o thy_o fall'th_n which_o be_v a_o grace_n of_o special_a use_n to_o thou_o so_o long_o as_o thou_o live_v in_o this_o world_n but_o most_o of_o all_o at_o thy_o last_o sickness_n and_o in_o the_o time_n of_o death_n therefore_o then_o especial_o be_v often_o actuate_a and_o exercise_v thy_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n look_v upon_o christ_n hang_v upon_o the_o cross_n there_o offer_v up_o his_o life_n as_o a_o all-sufficient_a sacrifice_n and_o full_a satisfaction_n to_o god_n justice_n for_o thy_o sin_n convince_a life_n by_o exceed_v other_o in_o holiness_n and_o in_o righteousness_n you_o must_v be_v more_o frequent_a and_o fervent_a in_o family-duty_n more_o careful_a in_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n day_n more_o just_a and_o honest_a in_o your_o deal_n with_o man_n live_v so_o as_o you_o may_v credit_v your_o profession_n and_o adorn_v the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ._n and_o when_o you_o be_v tempt_v to_o any_o sin_n thus_o reason_n the_o case_n with_o yourselves_o be_v i_o not_o late_o at_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o do_v i_o not_o there_o vow_v and_o promise_v to_o be_v more_o watchful_a
