what_o one_o do_v all_o do_v but_o i_o ascribe_v the_o work_n of_o sanctification_n unto_o the_o spirit_n because_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o sanctify_v and_o he_o be_v the_o strengthner_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v all_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o father_n as_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o then_o throùgh_o christ_n by_o the_o spirit_n grace_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o these_o three_o distinction_n of_o the_o trinity_n be_v good_a the_o father_n be_v of_o himself_o the_o son_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n that_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n proceed_v from_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o be_v send_v unto_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n to_o work_v grace_n and_o holiness_n in_o they_o and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o only_a worker_n and_o strengthner_n of_o grace_n because_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o holy_a fountain_n as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v he_o must_v needs_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o way_n to_o get_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n be_v to_o get_v the_o holy_a spirit_n for_o in_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v two_o thing_n be_v require_v first_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v must_v proceed_v from_o a_o holy_a fountain_n but_o the_o spirit_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o pure_a god_n therefore_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n that_o he_o work_v second_o the_o second_o thing_n require_v in_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v be_v this_o that_o he_o subsist_v in_o sanctification_n that_o be_v that_o he_o depend_v not_o upon_o another_o for_o sanctification_n but_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o sanctify_v himself_o now_o this_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n itself_o that_o be_v subsist_v in_o sanctification_n and_o abound_v in_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o able_a to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o that_o you_o may_v more_o full_o understand_v this_o point_n i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o work_v holiness_n and_o sanctification_n and_o this_o will_v appear_v in_o four_o thing_n the_o first_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v this_o by_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n a_o effectual_a worke._n operative_a and_o powerful_a faculty_n and_o that_o be_v do_v by_o rear_v the_o inward_a man_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o set_v up_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o shed_v abroad_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o bless_a effect_n of_o grace_n unto_o every_o faculty_n as_o the_o blood_n be_v infuse_v into_o every_o vein_n or_o as_o the_o soul_n go_v through_o every_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o give_v life_n unto_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n go_v through_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n and_o power_n into_o they_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o eph._n 1._o his_o effectual_a power_n that_o be_v he_o have_v such_o efficacy_n in_o work_v that_o he_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n unto_o the_o whole_a soul_n the_o second_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o he_o have_v set_v up_o the_o building_n and_o sweep_v every_o corner_n of_o the_o soul_n than_o he_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n by_o put_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o first_o when_o a_o man_n can_v do_v more_o than_o a_o natural_a man_n can_v do_v by_o nature_n than_o the_o spirit_n have_v add_v new_a habit_n as_o for_o example_n any_o hand_n can_v cut_v with_o a_o chissell_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n because_o no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v be_v reach_v it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o he_o can_v do_v water_n you_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n into_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o whether_o you_o have_v a_o new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v and_o experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v as_o i_o say_v it_o first_o build_v the_o house_n and_o sweep_v the_o room_n and_o then_o it_o fit_v and_o furnish_v the_o room_n with_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o it_o have_v give_v we_o new_a habit_n than_o it_o enable_v and_o help_v we_o to_o use_v these_o habit_n to_o good_a and_o herein_o appear_v the_o power_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o use_v that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o instrument_n that_o will_v sound_v well_o but_o he_o want_v skill_n to_o use_v it_o so_o many_o man_n they_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o because_o they_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v withal_o power_n to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v to_o use_v those_o habit_n which_o be_v in_o they_o thus_o samson_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n have_v power_n to_o use_v his_o strength_n act_v 4._o 32._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v bold_o that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n for_o you_o must_v know_v that_o there_o 32._o may_v be_v common_a grace_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v than_o it_o put_v strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n to_o work_v according_o thus_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o spirit_n come_v upon_o saul_n and_o he_o prophesy_v that_o be_v he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o before_o he_o can_v do_v and_o yet_o know_v that_o you_o may_v have_v true_a grace_n and_o yet_o now_o and_o then_o for_o the_o present_a want_n action_n you_o may_v want_v a_o power_n to_o do_v aught_o with_o it_o and_o it_o be_v then_o when_o the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o the_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o in_o heb._n 11._o brethren_n you_o have_v forget_v the_o consolation_n that_o be_v your_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o power_n be_v hide_v as_o dead_a and_o forget_v but_o the_o spirit_n will_v return_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v your_o power_n to_o good_a again_o the_o four_o way_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o give_v efficacy_n and_o power_n unto_o the_o mean_n of_o growth_n which_o be_v a_o
loathe_v the_o creature_n but_o sin_n all_o the_o imperfection_n and_o blemish_n and_o disease_n and_o infirmity_n of_o the_o creature_n make_v not_o god_n to_o loathe_v it_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o mixture_n of_o sin_n with_o it_o because_o they_o be_v not_o contrary_a unto_o god_n they_o fight_v not_o against_o god_n but_o sin_n fight_v against_o the_o purity_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o god_n hatred_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v only_o a_o hatred_n for_o sin_n second_o to_o we_o it_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n the_o argument_n stand_v thus_o that_o which_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o 2._o great_a good_a be_v the_o great_a evil_n but_o this_o sin_n do_v ergo._fw-la for_o it_o do_v deprive_v we_o of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a but_o especial_o of_o two_o thing_n wherein_o stand_v our_o chief_a good_a as_o first_o it_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o best_a outward_a good_a which_o be_v god_n as_o the_o prophet_n say_v your_o sin_n separate_v between_o you_o and_o your_o god_n and_o they_o keep_v good_a thing_n from_o you_o of_o 2._o all_o other_o good_a especial_o they_o hinder_v the_o come_n of_o grace_n into_o your_o heart_n now_o what_o great_a evil_n can_v there_o be_v than_o this_o to_o keep_v both_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n from_o we_o second_o it_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o chief_a good_a within_o we_o as_o for_o example_n first_o it_o deform_v the_o beauty_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n second_o it_o weaken_v that_o grace_n that_o be_v within_o that_o be_v it_o make_v we_o unable_a to_o resist_v evil_a this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n three_o if_o you_o can_v see_v it_o in_o these_o then_o come_v unto_o the_o effect_n that_o it_o work_v and_o it_o will_v appear_v 3._o to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n first_o it_o turn_v all_o the_o faculty_n and_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n &_o body_n to_o evil_a and_o be_v the_o breeder_n of_o all_o distemperature_n as_o fear_v and_o horror_n in_o the_o soul_n second_o it_o bring_v all_o the_o evil_a that_o do_v befall_v a_o man_n in_o this_o life_n they_o all_o come_v by_o sin_n all_o shame_n reproach_n poverty_n disgrace_n punishment_n come_v by_o sin_n now_o if_o you_o will_v but_o consider_v sin_n in_o these_o you_o will_v see_v it_o to_o be_v evil_a but_o especial_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o a_o distress_a conscience_n what_o fear_n what_o amazement_n what_o astonishment_n and_o despair_n what_o sorrow_n what_o anguish_n of_o heart_n be_v there_o as_o upon_o judas_n no_o restitution_n will_v serve_v no_o comfort_n will_v work_v no_o persuasion_n will_v prevail_v thus_o if_o you_o look_v upon_o sin_n it_o will_v appear_v the_o great_a evil_n four_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n if_o you_o consider_v 4._o the_o medicine_n that_o must_v come_v to_o heal_v it_o christ_n must_v lay_v down_o his_o glory_n for_o a_o time_n he_o must_v abase_v himself_o he_o must_v come_v from_o heaven_n to_o earth_n he_o must_v take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o humble_v himself_o unto_o a_o curse_a death_n before_o sin_n can_v be_v heal_v now_o put_v they_o altogether_o sin_n be_v evil_a by_o nature_n again_o it_o be_v evil_a because_o it_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o great_a good_a both_o within_o we_o and_o without_o we_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o disease_n shame_n and_o reproach_n such_o a_o evil_a that_o nothing_o will_v heal_v but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n look_v upon_o sin_n thus_o clothe_v and_o it_o will_v appear_v the_o great_a evil_n make_v conscience_n therefore_o of_o little_a sin_n for_o they_o bring_v great_a evil_n though_o the_o sand_n of_o the_o sea_n be_v but_o little_a yet_o a_o many_o heap_v together_o make_v a_o great_a burden_n so_o sin_n though_o but_o in_o a_o idle_a word_n thought_n or_o behaviour_n seem_v to_o be_v but_o a_o little_a sin_n yet_o lay_v many_o of_o they_o together_o and_o they_o will_v break_v the_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o barren_a and_o unfit_a to_o good_a if_o a_o man_n owe_v but_o little_a debt_n yet_o if_o they_o be_v many_o if_o he_o look_v and_o cast_v they_o up_o in_o the_o total_a he_o will_v find_v himself_o present_o to_o be_v but_o a_o bankrupt_a so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n what_o though_o the_o sin_n be_v but_o a_o little_a sin_n yet_o give_v this_o a_o little_a vent_n put_v it_o to_o action_n and_o this_o sin_n will_v prove_v a_o great_a sin_n give_v once_o consent_n and_o in_o time_n it_o will_v be_v a_o reign_a sin_n and_o when_o it_o be_v thus_o than_o it_o turn_v the_o soul_n into_o evil_n set_v it_o on_o a_o rage_n imprison_v it_o make_v it_o to_o obey_v and_o to_o be_v a_o slave_n to_o satan_n now_o what_o great_a evil_n can_v there_o be_v then_o sin_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o first_o mean_n to_o get_v the_o judgement_n rectify_v which_o will_v see_v sin_n so_o as_o to_o humble_v it_o the_o second_o mean_n to_o be_v humble_v be_v this_o you_o mean_n must_v labour_v to_o make_v your_o heart_n fit_a to_o be_v humble_a and_o that_o you_o may_v do_v this_o you_o must_v do_v these_o thing_n first_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v some_o sense_n of_o holiness_n that_o be_v you_o must_v get_v the_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n for_o except_v a_o man_n get_v the_o spirit_n he_o will_v not_o be_v humble_v but_o when_o there_o be_v holiness_n breed_v in_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o will_v see_v sin_n to_o be_v humble_a he_o will_v see_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o place_n take_v any_o heavy_a thing_n especial_o water_n and_o in_o its_o place_n it_o be_v not_o heavy_a but_o let_v it_o be_v remove_v out_o of_o its_o place_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n even_o so_o will_v sin_n be_v unto_o you_o when_o you_o have_v once_o get_v the_o spirit_n you_o will_v then_o see_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o place_n and_o to_o be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n that_o you_o will_v not_o willing_o bear_v it_o but_o you_o will_v stoop_v under_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o more_o holiness_n that_o any_o man_n get_v the_o more_o will_v be_v his_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o where_o there_o be_v most_o sight_n of_o sin_n there_o will_v be_v most_o grief_n for_o sin_n and_o this_o grief_n be_v always_o accompany_v with_o this_o humiliation_n that_o i_o speak_v of_o and_o where_o there_o be_v the_o great_a humiliation_n for_o sin_n there_o be_v the_o great_a door_n of_o mercy_n open_v where_o there_o be_v most_o sense_n of_o sin_n there_o the_o heart_n be_v best_a fit_v for_o grace_n and_o in_o this_o case_n the_o more_o tender_a of_o conscience_n the_o better_a christian._n second_o if_o you_o will_v be_v fit_a to_o be_v humble_a 2._o consider_v another_o thing_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n if_o you_o continue_v in_o sin_n you_o shall_v be_v damn_v deprive_v of_o glory_n you_o be_v once_o good_a consider_v now_o wherein_o your_o happiness_n consist_v consider_v that_o you_o have_v a_o immortal_a soul_n and_o that_o you_o must_v be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o these_o thing_n will_v make_v you_o to_o be_v humble_a nabuchadnezzar_n when_o he_o be_v bring_v to_o be_v like_o a_o beast_n than_o he_o confess_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v god_n and_o humble_v himself_o even_o so_o shall_v we_o again_o do_v but_o consider_v that_o all_o thing_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o that_o every_o one_o of_o you_o in_o particular_a be_v and_o that_o he_o be_v able_a present_o to_o dispose_v of_o you_o as_o he_o will_n again_o consider_v that_o god_n be_v always_o every_o where_o that_o he_o see_v all_o thing_n and_o that_o he_o will_v judge_v all_o man_n and_o that_o a_o day_n of_o judgement_n a_o day_n of_o departure_n to_o judgement_n be_v appoint_v unto_o all_o consider_v also_o the_o severity_n of_o the_o judge_n the_o sentence_n that_o he_o will_v pronounce_v the_o punishment_n that_o he_o will_v inflict_v the_o eternity_n of_o the_o time_n i_o say_v if_o man_n will_v but_o consider_v these_o thing_n wishly_o they_o will_v not_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n as_o they_o do_v but_o the_o want_n of_o consideration_n of_o these_o thing_n keep_v man_n from_o christ._n for_o if_o the_o adulterer_n will_v but_o consider_v what_o the_o scripture_n say_v that_o no_o adulterer_n shall_v be_v save_v or_o if_o the_o covetous_a man_n or_o drunkard_n etc._n etc._n that_o whole_o devote_v in_o judge_v not_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v whether_o we_o have_v true_o repent_v or_o not_o to_o help_v this_o consider_v whether_o your_o repentance_n arise_v from_o a_o natural_a conscience_n or_o a_o heart_n true_o change_v for_o that_o be_v all_o in_o all_o if_o your_o heart_n be_v change_v and_o from_o that_o and_o not_o from_o a_o natural_a conscience_n enlighten_v arise_v your_o repentance_n but_o this_o be_v hard_a of_o all_o to_o know_v you_o may_v know_v it_o two_o way_n 1._o by_o the_o inward_a difference_n 2._o by_o the_o outward_a effect_n first_o by_o the_o inward_a difference_n and_o they_o be_v five_o first_o if_o it_o come_v from_o a_o heart_n true_o change_v thou_o shall_v find_v thyself_o do_v all_o holy_a duty_n with_o a_o natural_a inclination_n as_o the_o fire_n to_o ascend_v although_o thou_o meet_v with_o many_o impediment_n yet_o never_o leave_v strive_v but_o inward_o delight_v in_o god_n law_n a_o natural_a conscience_n may_v do_v much_o but_o never_o make_v we_o inward_o from_o the_o bent_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o will_v good_a now_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n it_o be_v more_o to_o will_v then_o to_o do_v as_o saint_n paul_n will_v have_v the_o corinthian_n not_o only_o to_o do_v but_o also_o to_o will_n hence_o 10._o be_v it_o that_o nehemiah_n desire_v the_o lord_n to_o hear_v the_o 11_o prayer_n of_o they_o that_o do_v desire_v to_o fear_v he_o this_o be_v the_o very_a character_n of_o a_o saint_n the_o natural_a conscience_n if_o there_o be_v no_o hell_n will_v sin_n love_v it_o and_o use_v it_o but_o inward_o to_o desire_v holiness_n for_o itself_o be_v a_o infallible_a sign_n so_o that_o be_v there_o no_o heaven_n nor_o hell_n yet_o he_o will_v choose_v holiness_n and_o can_v do_v no_o otherwise_o when_o it_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v it_o therefore_o he_o never_o perform_v what_o he_o purpose_v but_o a_o heart_n true_o change_v enable_v we_o to_o do_v it_o as_o paul_n say_v i_o can_v do_v all_o thing_n through_o christ_n not_o some_o but_o all_o whereas_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v but_o sin_n because_o as_o saint_n peter_n say_v the_o will_n be_v not_o stir_v nor_o change_v therefore_o although_o much_o may_v be_v do_v yet_o it_o will_v down_o again_o as_o a_o stone_n if_o not_o change_v into_o fire_n though_o it_o be_v lift_v up_o yet_o it_o will_v fall_v down_o again_o now_o the_o natural_a conscience_n can_v change_v the_o will_n therefore_o can_v he_o resist_v fin_n but_o the_o true_a convert_n can_v say_v he_o can_v be_v chaste_a he_o can_v resist_v lust_n and_o the_o like_a the_o other_o say_v and_o say_v true_o they_o can_v but_o sin_n for_o the_o natural_a conscience_n can_v change_v and_o therefore_o they_o grow_v weary_a of_o it_o because_o it_o be_v not_o natural_a if_o they_o be_v true_o change_v they_o will_v do_v it_o with_o ease_n three_o the_o natural_a conscience_n can_v go_v no_o further_o then_o it_o be_v enlighten_v it_o may_v approve_v formal_a civil_a desire_v to_o be_v like_o he_o a_o man_n true_o spiritual_a be_v burdensome_a to_o a_o natural_a conscience_n though_o never_o so_o much_o enlighten_v the_o high_a degree_n of_o holiness_n do_v make_v he_o distaste_v he_o wherefore_o can_v not_o thou_o delight_v in_o they_o that_o be_v good_a thou_o have_v care_n to_o fear_v four_o the_o natural_a conscience_n may_v make_v a_o man_n abstain_v from_o many_o sin_n but_o he_o abstaine_v from_o none_o out_o of_o a_o detestation_n and_o hatred_n of_o they_o he_o may_v indeed_o hate_v a_o moral_a vice_n because_o he_o may_v have_v a_o moral_a be_v because_o that_o all_o love_n of_o delight_n arise_v from_o similitude_n and_o none_o thus_o love_n god_n which_o be_v not_o change_v and_o so_o like_o he_o but_o you_o may_v say_v how_o can_v i_o know_v this_o love_n of_o god_n object_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v easy_a enough_o to_o be_v know_v for_o 1._o he_o that_o love_v god_n keep_v his_o commandment_n answ._n 2._o the_o commandment_n which_o be_v ever_o inconstant_a and_o therefore_o the_o repentance_n come_v from_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v inconstant_a whether_o it_o be_v from_o fear_n or_o from_o novelty_n of_o holiness_n or_o persuasion_n or_o company_n or_o some_o sudden_a joy_n whatever_o it_o be_v not_o be_v a_o true_a change_n it_o cease_v as_o heat_v that_o arise_v from_o rub_v go_v away_o when_o the_o rub_n be_v end_v but_o it_o will_v continue_v if_o it_o arise_v from_o a_o soul_n give_v life_n to_o the_o body_n indeed_o i_o confess_v some_o passion_n may_v stay_v long_o than_o other_o as_o joash_n amazia_n but_o when_o once_o jehoida_o die_v they_o will_v cease_v second_o a_o evenne_n &_o uniformity_n in_o their_o life_n counterfeit_v can_v ever_o be_v the_o same_o but_o the_o godly_a be_v still_o the_o same_o in_o all_o course_n and_o place_n indeed_o they_o may_v be_v often_o uneven_a from_o the_o suddenness_n of_o the_o occasion_n as_o the_o newness_n of_o the_o air_n in_o the_o new_a country_n may_v make_v one_o sick_a but_o it_o kill_v not_o so_o a_o godly_a man_n in_o what_o place_n or_o time_n soever_o remain_v the_o same_o though_o he_o get_v disadvantage_n by_o it_o as_o a_o sheep_n fall_v into_o a_o ditch_n may_v be_v foul_v but_o be_v a_o sheep_n still_o but_o the_o wicked_a be_v clean_o another_o man_n he_o cast_v off_o the_o passion_n of_o goodness_n and_o be_v clean_o change_v but_o the_o godly_a man_n can_v cast_v off_o his_o nature_n because_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n therefore_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v in_o the_o manner_n he_o do_v before_o three_o same_o it_o be_v in_o substance_n before_o it_o come_v into_o the_o fire_n but_o now_o it_o have_v another_o quality_n it_o be_v cold_a and_o stiff_a and_o hard_a and_o unplyable_a but_o now_o it_o be_v hot_a and_o soft_a and_o pliable_a and_o this_o change_n be_v throughout_o in_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v iron_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o by_o this_o rule_n consider_v first_o we_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v 1._o body_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n when_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o life_n we_o assume_v unto_o ourselves_o only_o the_o outward_a form_n of_o godliness_n but_o regard_v not_o the_o power_n cleave_v in_o our_o affection_n to_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o leave_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v true_o good_a i_o do_v not_o say_v when_o you_o hate_v good_a but_o when_o you_o prefer_v evil_a before_o it_o in_o your_o choice_n and_o set_v it_o at_o the_o high_a end_n of_o the_o table_n and_o serve_v it_o first_o and_o attend_v upon_o it_o most_o when_o that_o cross_v holiness_n but_o you_o will_v not_o again_o cross_v it_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o common_a spirit_n without_o life_n second_o you_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v body_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o have_v it_o not_o in_o a_o feel_a manner_n the_o 2._o sanctify_a spirit_n work_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o taste_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n then_o holy_a only_o for_o a_o time_n but_o they_o walk_v not_o always_o 3._o even_o so_o if_o you_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n you_o will_v not_o be_v constant_a in_o good_a but_o off_o and_o on_o the_o rule_n a_o man_n that_o be_v live_v in_o christ_n you_o shall_v still_o find_v he_o live_v and_o move_v and_o do_v the_o action_n of_o the_o new_a man_n a_o man_n that_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n may_v do_v something_n that_o be_v good_a he_o may_v keep_v and_o press_v down_o some_o sin_n awhile_o but_o not_o always_o neither_o then_o because_o it_o be_v sin_n but_o because_o it_o cross_v his_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o some_o other_o thing_n again_o he_o may_v have_v some_o taste_n and_o relish_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o he_o be_v not_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v by_o they_o first_o he_o may_v walk_v as_o a_o live_a man_n walk_v that_o be_v perform_v holy_a duty_n but_o they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o holy_a duty_n neither_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o in_o obedience_n but_o out_o of_o self_n love_n that_o be_v they_o be_v still_o ebb_v and_o seldom_o flow_v they_o omit_v oft_o than_o they_o perform_v therefore_o let_v i_o exhort_v you_o that_o be_v alive_a and_o have_v be_v dead_a be_v you_o careful_a to_o prize_v your_o life_n and_o you_o that_o have_v be_v alive_a but_o now_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v you_o that_o have_v fall_v from_o your_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o in_o christ_n and_o howsoever_o a_o regenerate_a man_n look_v upon_o the_o punishment_n yet_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n not_o so_o much_o because_o he_o fear_v punishment_n as_o that_o he_o shall_v give_v his_o father_n such_o cause_n to_o take_v such_o displeasure_n against_o he_o but_o it_o be_v sin_n that_o he_o principal_o look_v upon_o viz._n that_o he_o have_v displease_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o god_n have_v be_v unto_o he_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o work_v humiliation_n in_o he_o but_o the_o other_o see_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o hell_n death_n and_o that_o final_a separation_n between_o he_o and_o happiness_n and_o hereupon_o for_o fear_v of_o punishment_n he_o be_v humble_v thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n in_o the_o object_n the_o second_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o cause_n the_o cause_n of_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v either_o some_o judgement_n 2._o present_a either_o upon_o his_o person_n or_o in_o his_o substance_n or_o in_o his_o family_n or_o else_o it_o be_v some_o judgement_n that_o he_o fear_v god_n will_v inflict_v upon_o he_o hereafter_o either_o in_o his_o riches_n or_o in_o his_o credit_n and_o reputation_n among_o man_n and_o therefore_o for_o fear_v of_o these_o he_o be_v humble_v but_o the_o cause_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n purity_n and_o perfection_n of_o god_n as_o also_o of_o god_n love_n towards_o a_o man_n he_o have_v a_o eye_n give_v he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o riches_n of_o god_n love_n unto_o he_o and_o then_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o and_o see_v his_o carriage_n towards_o god_n for_o such_o mercy_n and_o find_v no_o proportion_n between_o they_o hence_o grow_v his_o sorrow_n that_o he_o shall_v thus_o requite_v god_n with_o sin_n for_o mercy_n the_o three_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o effect_n for_o as_o they_o 3._o do_v proceed_v not_o consume_v the_o entrail_n breed_v and_o bring_v consumption_n of_o the_o body_n it_o dull_v and_o make_v dead_a the_o soul_n it_o take_v away_o the_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n it_o make_v a_o man_n careless_a to_o good_a it_o daule_v and_o make_v a_o man_n unwilling_a unto_o any_o good_a but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o body_n it_o quicken_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n unto_o good_a it_o put_v a_o new_a life_n into_o it_o it_o work_v a_o readiness_n in_o the_o will_n and_o love_n in_o the_o affection_n to_o christ_n grace_n and_o holiness_n three_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n of_o a_o hot_a and_o a_o fiery_a spirit_n it_o stir_v he_o up_o after_o evil_a to_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_v his_o neighbour_n it_o fill_v he_o full_a of_o hatred_n revenge_n and_o envy_v but_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o breed_v another_o kind_n of_o spirit_n in_o he_o it_o make_v he_o of_o a_o meek_a and_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n worldly_a sorrow_n will_v not_o put_v up_o reproach_n disgrace_n and_o wrong_v but_o this_o will_v put_v up_o all_o injury_n and_o wrong_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o he_o meet_v withal_o for_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v quest._n whether_o my_o sorrow_n be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o no._n to_o there_o be_v another_o light_n put_v into_o he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o uncleanness_n of_o sin_n he_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o own_o dye_n not_o only_a sin_n to_o be_v sin_n but_o sin_n to_o be_v vile_a and_o hereupon_o he_o will_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o mercy_n unless_o he_o may_v have_v grace_n but_o the_o other_o care_v not_o if_o he_o may_v be_v free_a from_o punishment_n whether_o he_o have_v strength_n against_o corruption_n or_o no._n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o continuance_n 2._o of_o it_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v constant_a but_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v but_o a_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o change_v it_o last_v not_o though_o for_o the_o present_a it_o may_v be_v violent_a and_o strong_a and_o work_n much_o outward_o yet_o it_o come_v but_o by_o fit_n and_o continue_v not_o like_o a_o land_n flood_n which_o violent_o for_o the_o present_a overflows_a the_o bank_n but_o it_o will_v away_o again_o it_o be_v not_o always_o thus_o but_o three_o because_o some_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n than_o other_o some_o have_v receive_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o illumination_n then_o other_o now_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o forceable_a to_o make_v a_o man_n humble_a then_o to_o be_v spiritual_o enlighten_v so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n do_v not_o come_v unto_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o grace_n he_o will_v never_o be_v humble_v the_o seven_o question_n be_v this_o what_o be_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n quest._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n necessary_a be_v that_o which_o make_v a_o man_n believe_v answ._n in_o christ_n viz._n make_v he_o to_o fly_v unto_o he_o and_o to_o prize_n christ_n above_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o prodigal_n he_o do_v not_o at_o the_o first_o go_v unto_o his_o father_n but_o he_o consider_v of_o it_o and_o when_o he_o see_v no_o way_n to_o escape_v than_o he_o say_v i_o will_v go_v unto_o my_o father_n so_o a_o christian_n that_o have_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n and_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o will_v make_v he_o to_o fly_v unto_o christ_n the_o least_o measure_n will_v give_v he_o such_o a_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o such_o a_o glimpse_n of_o glory_n that_o he_o will_v prize_v it_o above_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v show_v he_o that_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o escape_v hell_n but_o by_o go_v unto_o christ_n that_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v for_o sin_n but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n nothing_o so_o excellent_a as_o grace_v and_o holiness_n be_v it_o will_v tell_v he_o that_o he_o that_o will_v be_v christ_n disciple_n must_v do_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o he_o must_v renounce_v all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o any_o thing_n for_o salvation_n without_o christ_n and_o he_o must_v deny_v all_o ability_n to_o work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a without_o the_o spirit_n second_o he_o must_v take_v up_o the_o cross_n that_o be_v he_o must_v suffer_v what_o god_n will_v have_v he_o either_o in_o his_o name_n or_o body_n or_o good_n this_o be_v the_o last_o measure_n requisite_a without_o which_o thou_o will_v not_o receive_v christ_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o last_o question_n be_v it_o so_o that_o humiliation_n be_v so_o necessary_a to_o the_o use_v right_a receive_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o consider_v our_o condition_n and_o estate_n whether_o we_o have_v this_o condition_n in_o we_o or_o no_o let_v every_o man_n by_o this_o try_v his_o condition_n whether_o he_o have_v receive_v christ_n or_o no_o and_o this_o must_v not_o be_v outward_o but_o inward_o not_o a_o sorrow_n in_o show_n but_o in_o substance_n and_o think_v not_o that_o a_o little_a sob_a and_o sigh_v will_v serve_v the_o turn_n a_o little_a ring_n of_o the_o hand_n a_o few_o tear_n and_o a_o little_a hang_v down_o of_o the_o head_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o deep_a humiliation_n such_o a_o humiliation_n that_o proceed_v from_o the_o spirit_n in_o roman_n 8._o 15._o you_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n again_o to_o fear_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n you_o 15._o once_o have_v a_o slavish_a fear_n a_o fear_n contrary_a unto_o this_o true_a fear_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n but_o you_o shall_v not_o have_v it_o again_o but_o that_o humiliation_n shall_v proceed_v from_o another_o ground_n namely_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o you_o shall_v fear_v he_o not_o as_o a_o judge_n but_o as_o a_o father_n therefore_o let_v every_o man_n enter_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o see_v whether_o this_o condition_n be_v in_o he_o or_o no_o and_o think_v not_o to_o come_v unto_o christ_n or_o to_o be_v ingraft_v into_o christ_n without_o it_o for_o as_o i_o say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a on_o god_n part_n yet_o it_o be_v necessary_a on_o our_o part_n because_o we_o will_v not_o receive_v christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n till_o we_o be_v thorough_o humble_v and_o that_o you_o may_v see_v the_o necessity_n of_o this_o duty_n of_o humiliation_n i_o will_v show_v you_o in_o five_o particular_n that_o a_o man_n can_v receive_v the_o gospel_n except_o he_o be_v humble_v first_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n must_v be_v humble_a or_o else_o he_o will_v not_o receive_v jesus_n christ._n to_o receive_v jesus_n 1._o christ_n be_v the_o first_o act_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o we_o preach_v the_o gospel_n general_o unto_o all_o that_o whosoever_o will_v may_v have_v christ_n but_o you_o must_v first_o receive_v he_o and_o this_o you_o will_v not_o do_v till_o you_o be_v humble_v till_o you_o think_v you_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o christ_n till_o then_o you_o will_v think_v the_o work_n too_o great_a and_o wage_n too_o small_a as_o for_o example_n a_o woman_n must_v first_o receive_v her_o husband_n and_o be_v unite_v unto_o he_o before_o she_o can_v be_v make_v partaker_n either_o of_o his_o riches_n or_o honour_n so_o before_o a_o christian_a can_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n he_o must_v deny_v himself_o and_o cleave_v whole_o unto_o christ_n and_o receive_v he_o so_o as_o to_o be_v rule_v by_o he_o and_o to_o suffer_v for_o he_o but_o some_o man_n will_v say_v this_o be_v too_o much_o what_o object_n must_v i_o so_o receive_v christ_n that_o i_o must_v forsake_v all_o thing_n for_o he_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v no_o marvel_n though_o thou_o think_v so_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o humble_v answ._n but_o if_o thou_o be_v humble_v thou_o will_v never_o stick_v at_o any_o thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v he_o be_v then_o in_o the_o condition_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v both_o to_o deny_v himself_o take_v up_o the_o cross_n and_o to_o follow_v christ_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v than_o he_o care_v not_o to_o be_v trample_v under_o foot_n for_o christ_n to_o suffer_v disgrace_n reproach_n and_o shame_n for_o christ_n but_o till_o then_o a_o man_n will_v not_o something_n a_o man_n will_v do_v but_o not_o this_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o a_o man_n be_v humble_a second_o to_o receive_v the_o gospel_n be_v to_o entertain_v christ_n into_o the_o soul_n he_o that_o entertain_v 2._o christ_n so_o must_v retain_v he_o and_o continue_v with_o he_o he_o must_v not_o take_v christ_n for_o a_o day_n or_o a_o year_n but_o he_o must_v take_v christ_n as_o a_o woman_n do_v her_o husband_n for_o term_v of_o life_n nay_o after_o life_n and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n with_o such_o a_o holy_a demeanour_n of_o himself_o that_o he_o may_v not_o give_v the_o least_o occasion_n of_o evil_n that_o may_v be_v to_o christ._n you_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o you_o must_v resist_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n if_o you_o contract_v with_o christ_n you_o must_v takehee_v of_o despise_v he_o take_v heed_n of_o give_v the_o spirit_n a_o nonplus_n and_o you_o must_v continue_v in_o all_o estate_n and_o keep_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v your_o profession_n
christ_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o christian_n have_v this_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a turbulent_a sorrow_n that_o break_v the_o heart_n answ._n and_o mollify_v and_o soften_v it_o but_o there_o be_v another_o sorrow_n which_o i_o call_v a_o temper_a sorrow_n and_o that_o sorrow_n have_v in_o it_o both_o a_o sight_n of_o hell_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o heaven_n a_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n which_o far_o exceed_v this_o sorrow_n for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o joy_n the_o great_a joy_n be_v not_o express_v by_o laughter_n for_o that_o be_v the_o great_a joy_n that_o be_v the_o joy_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n so_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a grief_n that_o be_v express_v by_o tear_n and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a fire_n that_o make_v the_o most_o crackle_v and_o noise_n nor_o that_o the_o deep_a water_n that_o make_v the_o most_o roar_a so_o be_v it_o not_o the_o great_a grief_n or_o sorrow_n that_o express_v itself_o by_o this_o turbulent_a passion_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o the_o great_a grief_n be_v nothing_o when_o a_o sinner_n apprehend_v sin_n within_o and_o see_v it_o in_o its_o own_o colour_n than_o it_o humble_v he_o second_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o nature_n answ._n of_o man_n some_o man_n be_v of_o a_o more_o hardy_a nature_n than_o other_o and_o again_o some_o be_v of_o a_o more_o soft_a and_o tender_a disposition_n for_o example_n some_o man_n flesh_n will_v heal_v soon_o than_o other_o though_o the_o wound_n be_v the_o same_o so_o some_o have_v more_o soft_a and_o gentle_a nature_n and_o therefore_o soon_o wrought_v upon_o again_o some_o god_n intend_v to_o build_v a_o great_a work_n upon_o and_o therefore_o he_o humble_v they_o the_o more_o again_o some_o he_o will_v season_v above_o other_o and_o therefore_o will_v humble_v they_o the_o more_o that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o it_o three_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o although_o all_o answ._n have_v not_o the_o like_a measure_n of_o sorrow_n neither_o the_o same_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n that_o other_o have_v &_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o much_o cast_v down_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o other_o be_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o be_v not_o humble_a at_o all_o but_o because_o the_o condition_n follow_v it_o so_o close_o that_o it_o have_v not_o power_n to_o work_v that_o effect_n in_o they_o which_o it_o do_v in_o other_o that_o see_v the_o same_o condition_n a_o far_o off_o or_o not_o at_o all_o they_o apprehend_v christ_n by_o faith_n and_o see_v reconciliation_n through_o he_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o deject_a as_o other_o that_o see_v he_o not_o thus_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o discourage_v though_o thou_o find_v that_o thy_o humiliation_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o other_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o same_o and_o the_o apprehension_n the_o same_o but_o christ_n the_o condition_n of_o thy_o peace_n be_v apprehend_v near_o thou_o by_o faith_n and_o this_o qualify_v the_o tempest_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o christ_n be_v not_o see_v of_o the_o other_o as_o a_o saviour_n and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n as_o for_o example_n there_o be_v two_o man_n set_v upon_o by_o robber_n the_o one_o see_v no_o help_n or_o no_o way_n to_o escape_v and_o hereupon_o he_o be_v marvellous_o afflict_a and_o astonish_v because_o he_o find_v himfelfe_n unable_a to_o resist_v or_o make_v his_o party_n good_a with_o they_o but_o the_o other_o man_n beset_v with_o robber_n see_v another_o near_a hand_n that_o will_v stand_v close_o to_o he_o and_o thereupon_o he_o trust_v hope_n and_o depend_v upon_o the_o man_n to_o help_v he_o this_o man_n see_v the_o danger_n aswell_o as_o the_o other_o and_o fear_n but_o his_o fear_n be_v not_o a_o distract_a fear_n neither_o be_v it_o so_o great_a as_o the_o other_o because_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o joy_n and_o confidence_n in_o that_o he_o see_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v yet_o he_o fear_v the_o same_o that_o the_o other_o fear_n and_o be_v true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a unto_o he_o that_o save_v he_o from_o the_o danger_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n they_o that_o have_v a_o turbulent_a kind_n of_o sorrow_n see_v death_n and_o hell_n and_o sin_n and_o damnation_n but_o he_o see_v christ_n so_o far_o off_o that_o he_o can_v depend_v upon_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o hence_o for_o the_o present_a be_v marvellous_o cast_v down_o but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o mix_a sorrow_n speak_v of_o see_v the_o same_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n but_o withal_o he_o apprehend_v christ_n as_o a_o helper_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o here_o upon_o be_v not_o so_o much_o deject_v and_o cast_v do_v wne_z as_o the_o other_z and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v as_o true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a as_o the_o other_o therefore_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o heart_n sensible_a of_o sin_n that_o be_v labour_v to_o know_v sin_n and_o the_o evil_a of_o it_o and_o withal_o labour_v to_o see_v christ_n or_o else_o you_o will_v be_v over-frighted_n with_o they_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o prison_n for_o treason_n or_o a_o great_a fact_n he_o know_v before_o what_o sentence_n the_o judge_n and_o jury_n will_v pass_v upon_o he_o but_o he_o care_v not_o if_o before_o he_o have_v get_v the_o king_n pardon_n so_o if_o you_o know_v sin_n and_o know_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o know_v not_o christ_n you_o will_v have_v no_o comfort_n in_o your_o knowledge_n labour_v therefore_o to_o get_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n john_n 16._o 9_o 9_o a_o man_n be_v no_o soon_o convict_v but_o there_o will_v be_v a_o change_n wrought_v in_o he_o for_o a_o man_n be_v then_o convict_v when_o he_o be_v overcome_v every_o way_n and_o thus_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v convince_v you_o of_o sin_n seek_v what_o way_n you_o will_v to_o keep_v off_o the_o stroke_n of_o the_o spirit_n yet_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a and_o this_o stroke_n shall_v humble_v you_o if_o you_o belong_v unto_o god_n as_o it_o do_v paul_n in_o this_o place_n but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o know_v whether_o i_o be_o true_o humble_v or_o no_o for_o your_o better_a help_n i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o sign_n by_o which_o you_o may_v examine_v yourselves_o and_o then_o according_o you_o may_v judge_v of_o your_o estate_n the_o first_o sign_n whereby_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v thorough_o humble_v or_o no_o be_v this_o if_o you_o sign_n love_v much_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v thorough_o humble_v this_o we_o see_v in_o the_o woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n and_o it_o be_v christ_n commendation_n of_o she_o that_o she_o love_v much_o that_o be_v she_o be_v sensible_a of_o that_o which_o christ_n have_v do_v for_o she_o therefore_o her_o love_n to_o christ_n be_v exceed_v great_a no_o labour_n too_o great_a nothing_o too_o precious_a for_o christ_n and_o this_o we_o see_v in_o paul_n also_o christ_n do_v much_o for_o paul_n and_o paul_n think_v nothing_o too_o good_a for_o christ_n therefore_o peremptory_o he_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v ready_a not_o only_o to_o suffer_v but_o to_o die_v for_o christ_n see_v christ_n save_v my_o soul_n from_o hell_n and_o that_o by_o such_o a_o price_n of_o so_o much_o worth_n as_o his_o own_o blood_n be_v how_o can_v i_o then_o think_v that_o my_o life_n be_v too_o much_o for_o christ_n therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o examine_v your_o humiliation_n by_o your_o love_n if_o you_o love_v he_o not_o above_o all_o thing_n if_o you_o prize_v he_o not_o above_o all_o thing_n you_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o true_o humble_v and_o that_o i_o may_v persuade_v you_o to_o love_n christ_n and_o grace_n and_o holiness_n above_o all_o thing_n consider_v these_o two_o motive_n the_o first_o motive_n be_v this_o consider_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o i_o persuade_v you_o unto_o the_o goodness_n motive_n and_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n make_v man_n to_o love_v they_o man_n will_v not_o love_v any_o thing_n except_o they_o see_v some_o excellency_n in_o it_o or_o at_o least_o wise_a esteem_n it_o so_o but_o if_o it_o be_v excellent_a than_o it_o win_v their_o love_n so_o it_o will_v be_v with_o you_o in_o this_o if_o you_o see_v into_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o grace_n it_o will_v win_v your_o love_n you_o will_v prize_v he_o above_o all_o thing_n no_o man_n will_v prize_v a_o jewel_n till_o he_o know_v
sin_n be_v call_v 9_o foolishness_n hence_o then_o it_o be_v extreme_a folly_n to_o commit_v the_o least_o sin_n it_o be_v good_a to_o oppose_v this_o conclusion_n against_o all_o the_o reason_n of_o satan_n that_o we_o will_v not_o sin_n because_o it_o will_v be_v our_o folly_n and_o if_o we_o can_v answer_v in_o particular_n let_v we_o answer_v he_o in_o the_o general_a that_o we_o will_v not_o yield_v to_o any_o it_o may_v be_v he_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v gain_v some_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o sweetness_n or_o commodity_n by_o sin_v but_o if_o you_o can_v bring_v your_o heart_n not_o to_o believe_v this_o you_o will_v never_o do_v it_o and_o say_v the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v extreme_a folly_n to_o do_v so_o and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o therefore_o we_o will_v not_o let_v this_o move_v you_o to_o hare_n sin_n the_o sixteen_o motive_n to_o move_v you_o to_o hate_v sin_n be_v because_o sin_n will_v take_v you_o away_o a_o rich_a man_n that_o love_v his_o riches_n it_o be_v a_o grief_n to_o part_v with_o they_o and_o therefore_o he_o do_v hate_v a_o thief_n so_o it_o be_v the_o slay_v of_o the_o soul_n to_o part_v the_o qualification_n of_o the_o person_n that_o be_v true_o weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v first_o they_o must_v be_v meek_a second_o they_o must_v be_v lowly_a the_o three_o thing_n be_v the_o pattern_n or_o teacher_n of_o they_o and_o that_o be_v christ_n the_o best_a the_o holy_a and_o wise_a teacher_n in_o the_o world_n learn_v of_o i_o i_o be_o ready_a to_o teach_v all_o and_o to_o upbraid_v no_o man_n and_o then_o in_o the_o last_o place_n the_o thing_n that_o they_o must_v do_v they_o must_v take_v christ_n yoke_n and_o so_o they_o shall_v be_v rid_v of_o their_o burden_n the_o sum_n of_o it_o be_v this_o if_o you_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v with_o your_o sin_n and_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o be_v ease_v it_o be_v no_o more_o but_o come_v unto_o christ_n and_o he_o will_v ease_v you_o that_o be_v if_o you_o be_v heavy_a lade_v with_o sin_n christ_n be_v ready_a to_o take_v off_o your_o burden_n and_o to_o put_v upon_o they_o the_o easy_a yoke_n of_o obedience_n and_o holiness_n
