convenience_n of_o it_o with_o the_o frame_n and_o constitution_n of_o humane_a nature_n in_o which_o the_o wise_a author_n of_o nature_n have_v implant_v a_o natural_a sympathy_n between_o those_o that_o partake_v of_o it_o in_o each_o other_o pain_n and_o pleasure_n so_o that_o though_o the_o humane_a nature_n be_v large_o diffuse_v and_o spread_v through_o infinite_a number_n of_o individual_n which_o by_o vast_a distance_n of_o time_n and_o place_n be_v separate_v from_o one_o another_o yet_o as_o if_o it_o be_v but_o all_o one_o common_a soul_n operate_n in_o several_a body_n in_o several_a time_n and_o place_n it_o feel_v almost_o in_o every_o one_o body_n what_o it_o enjoy_v or_o suffer_v in_o every_o other_o and_o whether_o it_o be_v please_v or_o offend_v in_o one_o individual_a be_v please_v or_o offend_v in_o they_o all_o and_o though_o the_o sense_n be_v quick_a in_o that_o individual_a part_n or_o member_n of_o humane_a nature_n upon_o which_o the_o pain_n or_o pleasure_n strike_v immediate_o yet_o all_o the_o rest_n how_o distant_a soever_o in_o time_n or_o place_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v notice_n of_o it_o be_v sensible_o touch_v and_o affect_v with_o it_o for_o thus_o when_o we_o read_v or_o hear_v of_o the_o calamity_n of_o other_o man_n our_o bowel_n yern_v by_o a_o natural_a sympathy_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o distant_a from_o we_o and_o be_v no_o otherwise_o relate_v to_o we_o than_o as_o they_o partake_v of_o our_o nature_n and_o though_o they_o be_v long_o since_o dead_a and_o out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o any_o assistance_n yet_o their_o misery_n without_o any_o motive_n of_o reason_n or_o discourse_n strike_v we_o into_o a_o soft_a compassion_n yea_o though_o we_o know_v the_o calamity_n which_o we_o read_v or_o hear_v of_o to_o be_v nothing_o but_o romantic_a fiction_n yet_o the_o very_a imagination_n of_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o melt_v we_o into_o tear_n in_o despite_n of_o our_o will_n and_o our_o reason_n nor_o be_v this_o visible_a only_o in_o person_n that_o be_v adult_n but_o even_o in_o little_a child_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v capable_a of_o take_v notice_n of_o thing_n do_v without_o any_o reason_n express_v themselves_o pain_v and_o afflict_v with_o the_o dissemble_a grief_n and_o suffering_n of_o those_o that_o attend_v they_o all_o which_o be_v most_o evident_a instance_n of_o that_o general_a sympathy_n which_o natural_o intercede_v between_o all_o man_n since_o we_o can_v neither_o see_v nor_o hear_v of_o nor_o imagine_v another_o misery_n without_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o sensible_a pain_n and_o affliction_n against_o which_o i_o know_v no_o other_o objection_n can_v be_v urge_v but_o this_o that_o there_o be_v sundry_a instance_n of_o man_n who_o seem_v to_o have_v arrive_v to_o that_o degree_n of_o cruelty_n as_o to_o take_v pleasure_n in_o afflict_v other_o and_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sympathize_v with_o their_o pain_n that_o they_o rather_o seem_v to_o be_v recreate_v with_o they_o to_o which_o i_o shall_v only_o answer_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o that_o delight_n which_o some_o man_n take_v in_o plague_v and_o afflict_v other_o proceed_v not_o from_o their_o natural_a temper_n but_o be_v rather_o to_o be_v attribute_v to_o some_o violent_a effervency_n and_o transport_v of_o their_o nature_n such_o as_o be_v outrageous_a anger_n or_o deep_a and_o inveterate_a revenge_n under_o both_o which_o nature_n be_v discompose_v and_o disorder_v and_o chafe_v into_o a_o preternatural_a ferment_n and_o according_o when_o it_o be_v cool_v again_o and_o reduce_v to_o a_o compose_a temper_n instead_o of_o rejoice_v in_o the_o mischief_n it_o have_v do_v it_o usual_o bewail_v and_o lament_v they_o and_o reflect_v upon_o they_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o horror_n and_o remorse_n which_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o humane_a nature_n in_o itself_o be_v very_o tender_a and_o compassionate_a how_o much_o soever_o it_o may_v be_v accidental_o transport_v by_o unnatural_a passion_n superinduce_v upon_o it_o second_o suppose_v what_o be_v object_v be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v some_o nature_n so_o canker_a and_o diabolize_v as_o to_o be_v real_o please_v with_o the_o pain_n and_o misery_n of_o other_o the_o instance_n of_o this_o kind_n be_v so_o few_o
produce_v only_o a_o present_a fit_a and_o pang_n of_o religion_n which_o in_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o next_o temptation_n wither_v and_o die_v away_o or_o else_o they_o consider_v but_o by_o half_n their_o mind_n be_v all_o overgrow_a with_o worldly_a care_n and_o thought_n which_o quick_o choke_v that_o holy_a seed_n and_o render_v it_o barren_a and_o unfruitful_a thus_o inconsideration_n you_o see_v will_v render_v the_o most_o powerful_a motive_n insignificant_a and_o it_o will_v be_v to_o no_o purpose_n for_o religion_n to_o knock_v at_o the_o door_n of_o our_o soul_n while_o our_o reason_n be_v asleep_a and_o our_o understanding_n deaf_a to_o its_o importunity_n but_o will_v we_o be_v but_o so_o true_a to_o our_o own_o interest_n as_o to_o inure_v ourselves_o to_o a_o through_o consideration_n of_o our_o religion_n that_o will_v arm_v we_o with_o such_o invincible_a argument_n as_o none_o of_o our_o lust_n will_v be_v able_a to_o withstand_v and_o we_o shall_v have_v so_o many_o good_a thought_n like_o guardian_n angel_n perpetual_o encamp_v about_o we_o that_o whensoever_o the_o devil_n or_o the_o world_n besiege_v we_o they_o will_v find_v our_o soul_n impregnable_o fortify_v against_o all_o their_o battery_n if_o in_o the_o morning_n before_o we_o go_v into_o the_o world_n we_o will_v sit_v down_o a_o while_n and_o take_v a_o little_a pain_n to_o antidote_n our_o soul_n with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o o_o my_o soul_n now_o be_o i_o go_v into_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o crowd_n of_o temptation_n where_o ever_o and_o anon_o one_o bad_a object_n or_o other_o will_v be_v beckon_v to_o i_o and_o invite_v i_o unto_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a let_v we_o therefore_o consider_v a_o little_a what_o answer_n we_o shall_v return_v to_o all_o their_o importunity_n by_o and_o by_o perhaps_o some_o great_a opportunity_n of_o gain_n may_v present_v itself_o before_o thou_o to_o tempt_v thou_o to_o a_o fraud_n or_o consenage_n but_o alas_o what_o a_o poor_a recompense_n will_v a_o little_a money_n be_v for_o all_o that_o eternity_n of_o misery_n whereunto_o i_o shall_v consign_v myself_o by_o it_o can_v i_o carry_v this_o sorry_a pelf_n thither_o with_o i_o or_o if_o i_o can_v can_v i_o bribe_v my_o flame_n or_o corrupt_v my_o tormentor_n with_o it_o and_o shall_v i_o for_o such_o a_o trifle_a momentary_a gain_n incur_v such_o a_o everlasting_a damage_n when_o i_o have_v thus_o answer_v this_o temptation_n perhaps_o immediate_o after_o some_o amorous_a object_n may_v present_v itself_o to_o court_v i_o to_o the_o harlot_n bed_n but_o o_o my_o soul_n will_v the_o pleasure_n i_o be_o promise_v there_o compensate_a the_o loss_n of_o all_o that_o heaven_n of_o immortal_a joy_n which_o i_o shall_v forfeit_v by_o it_o and_o if_o they_o will_v not_o as_o doubtless_o they_o will_v not_o shall_v i_o be_v so_o childish_a as_o for_o the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o moment_n to_o extinguish_v all_o my_o hope_n of_o be_v please_v for_o ever_o and_o when_o thou_o have_v thus_o baffle_v this_o temptation_n perhaps_o thou_o may_v be_v solicit_v a_o new_a with_o some_o importunate_a invitation_n to_o intemperance_n but_o o_o my_o soul_n remember_v the_o bitter_a agony_n that_o thy_o saviour_n endure_v upon_o the_o score_n of_o thy_o sin_n how_o this_o among_o the_o rest_n fill_v his_o deadly_a cup_n and_o vomit_v it_o full_a of_o gall_n and_o vinegar_n and_o can_v i_o be_v so_o senseless_a as_o to_o make_v light_n of_o any_o sin_n the_o guilt_n whereof_o be_v so_o heavy_a as_o to_o crush_v the_o lord_n of_o life_n into_o his_o grave_n shall_v i_o be_v so_o disingenuous_a as_o to_o gratify_v any_o lust_n that_o have_v a_o hand_n in_o the_o murder_n of_o my_o dear_a saviour_n my_o saviour_n who_o love_v i_o a_o thousand_o time_n better_o than_o i_o love_v myself_o and_o now_o no_o soon_o haste_v thou_o repulse_v this_o temptation_n but_o happy_o some_o other_o may_v assault_v thou_o thou_o may_v be_v present_v with_o a_o favourable_a opportunity_n of_o treat_v thy_o lust_n so_o private_o and_o secure_o as_o that_o no_o eye_n shall_v discover_v thou_o and_o then_o how_o difficult_a will_v it_o be_v for_o thou_o to_o refuse_v such_o a_o invite_a occasion_n but_o consider_v o_o my_o soul_n thou_o be_v always_o and_o every_o where_o under_o the_o inspection_n of_o thy_o judge_n by_o who_o righteous_a doom_n thou_o must_v stand_v or_o fall_v for_o ever_o and_o he_o that_o see_v what_o thou_o do_v in_o private_a will_v one_o day_n call_v thou_o to_o account_v and_o open_o unmask_v all_o thy_o action_n and_o present_v they_o bare-faced_n upon_o the_o public_a theatre_n before_o all_o the_o world_n of_o spirit_n unless_o therefore_o thou_o can_v find_v a_o place_n to_o be_v wicked_a in_o where_o god_n may_v not_o see_v thou_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o promise_v thyself_o covert_n and_o retirement_n for_o he_o will_v one_o day_n bring_v to_o light_v all_o thy_o deed_n of_o darkness_n and_o display_v thy_o shame_n to_o the_o open_a view_n of_o the_o world_n will_v we_o i_o say_v but_o take_v the_o pain_n every_o morning_n before_o we_o enter_v into_o the_o world_n to_o season_n and_o antidote_n our_o soul_n with_o such_o meditation_n as_o these_o it_o will_v doubtless_o mighty_o contribute_v to_o the_o mortification_n of_o our_o lusts._n for_o this_o will_v make_v the_o argument_n of_o our_o religion_n so_o familiar_a to_o we_o that_o no_o temptation_n whatsoever_o will_v be_v able_a to_o baffle_v our_o resolution_n which_o be_v back_v with_o such_o a_o strength_n of_o reason_n will_v stand_v like_o a_o rock_n of_o adamant_n outbraving_a the_o fury_n of_o those_o wave_n that_o dash_v themselves_o against_o it_o and_o force_v they_o to_o retire_v after_o all_o their_o threaten_a rage_n in_o empty_a and_o insignificant_a foam_n for_o what_o temptation_n can_v be_v too_o hard_a for_o that_o soul_n that_o be_v arm_v with_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o hell_n and_o be_v furnish_v with_o argument_n from_o all_o the_o quarter_n of_o reason_n and_o religion_n to_o oppose_v against_o it_o this_o therefore_o be_v another_o of_o those_o mean_n and_o instrument_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o mortify_v our_o lust_n viz._n a_o serious_a consideration_n of_o the_o motive_n and_o argument_n whereby_o we_o be_v to_o oppose_v they_o iii_o another_o instrument_n of_o mortification_n be_v a_o hearty_a and_o wellgrounded_n resolution_n and_o indeed_o without_o a_o firm_a resolution_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o we_o to_o attempt_v the_o mortify_n of_o our_o lust_n or_o any_o difficult_a undertake_n whatsoever_o for_o there_o be_v a_o wide_a distance_n between_o thought_n and_o thing_n and_o it_o be_v much_o easy_a to_o discourse_v of_o thing_n than_o to_o pass_v they_o into_o execution_n for_o clear_a reason_n be_v accompany_v with_o a_o wonderful_a delight_n because_o there_o we_o engage_v only_o with_o design_n and_o fight_v only_o with_o the_o idea_n of_o thing_n they_o will_v easy_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v conquer_v by_o we_o and_o take_v captive_a at_o our_o will_n but_o when_o we_o pass_v into_o practice_n that_o will_v revolt_v and_o oppose_v we_o in_o the_o execution_n which_o be_v so_o very_o compliant_a in_o the_o thought_n and_o meditation_n than_o you_o will_v find_v that_o you_o must_v wrestle_v stout_o with_o those_o difficulty_n that_o will_v make_v head_n against_o you_o and_o that_o these_o will_v put_v you_o to_o a_o great_a proof_n of_o your_o valour_n and_o constancy_n than_o ever_o you_o do_v imagine_v so_o that_o unless_o you_o be_v arm_v with_o a_o great_a strength_n of_o resolution_n you_o will_v be_v beat_v oft_o at_o the_o first_o attempt_n and_o meet_v with_o great_a resistance_n than_o you_o expect_v be_v force_v upon_o a_o base_a and_o cowardly_a retreat_n now_o to_o form_v a_o firm_a resolution_n require_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o prudence_n and_o good_a conduct_n for_o it_o be_v of_o great_a avail_n in_o all_o case_n to_o begin_v well_o and_o as_o a_o foundation_n well_o lay_v do_v secure_v the_o superstructure_n so_o a_o resolution_n well_o form_v will_v render_v the_o execution_n of_o what_o we_o be_v to_o do_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_a and_o feasible_a before_o we_o do_v resolve_v therefore_o on_o mortify_v our_o lust_n let_v we_o be_v sure_a to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o former_a instrument_n of_o mortification_n that_o be_v let_v we_o acquaint_v ourselves_o with_o all_o those_o mighty_a argument_n against_o sin_n wherewith_o either_o our_o reason_n or_o religion_n can_v furnish_v we_o and_o let_v we_o consider_v they_o over_o and_o over_o till_o they_o be_v familiar_a to_o our_o understanding_n and_o our_o thought_n have_v extract_v the_o utmost_a force_n of_o they_o for_o which_o end_v it_o will_v be_v necessary_a for_o we_o to_o seek_v direction_n from_o our_o spiritual_a guide_n
sense_n do_v multiply_v its_o temptation_n we_o shall_v still_o multiply_v our_o desire_n and_o affection_n and_o at_o every_o new_a game_n that_o spring_v we_o shall_v still_o let_v fly_v new_a passion_n but_o now_o the_o end_n of_o vice_n be_v not_o only_o various_a but_o also_o contrary_a to_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o one_o another_o for_o all_o vice_n consist_v in_o extreme_n either_o in_o excess_n or_o defect_n their_o end_n must_v be_v contrary_a too_o and_o so_o they_o can_v but_o disagree_v excess_n and_o defect_n be_v in_o themselves_o most_o contrary_a and_o these_o contrary_a vice_n must_v needs_o raise_v contrary_a faction_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o people_n it_o with_o a_o rabble_n of_o wild_a and_o inconsistent_a passion_n which_o will_v be_v always_o bandy_n one_o against_o another_o and_o consequent_o embroil_v the_o soul_n in_o eternal_a mutiny_n and_o tumult_n and_o this_o be_v the_o state_n of_o every_o vicious_a man_n he_o be_v divide_v into_o infinite_a schism_n and_o separation_n and_o like_o a_o barbarous_a country_n canton_v out_o into_o a_o world_n of_o petty_a principality_n which_o be_v always_o together_o by_o the_o ear_n and_o continual_o invade_v one_o another_o dominion_n now_o what_o a_o miserable_a distraction_n must_v a_o man_n mind_n be_v in_o when_o it_o be_v thus_o justle_v to_o and_o fro_o in_o such_o a_o crowd_n of_o contrary_a and_o impetuous_a passion_n when_o pride_n shove_v it_o one_o way_n and_o covetousness_n another_o when_o ambition_n thrust_v it_o forward_o and_o cowardice_n pull_v it_o back_o again_o and_o so_o many_o different_a lust_n do_v at_o the_o same_o time_n hurry_v it_o so_o many_o different_a and_o contrary_a way_n how_o be_v it_o possible_a it_o shall_v escape_v actaeon_n fate_n to_o be_v worry_v till_o it_o be_v tear_v in_o piece_n by_o its_o own_o hound_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o value_v the_o peace_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n and_o will_v not_o have_v the_o inward_a harmony_n discompose_v by_o the_o perpetual_a jarring_n of_o so_o many_o contrary_a passion_n it_o concern_v we_o to_o subdue_v and_o mortify_v our_o lust_n for_o so_o long_o as_o we_o entertain_v these_o seditious_a incendiary_n they_o will_v be_v perpetual_o raise_v tumult_n within_o we_o and_o our_o mind_n will_v never_o be_v at_o quiet_a for_o they_o for_o the_o only_a way_n to_o keep_v our_o mind_n at_o peace_n be_v to_o unite_v our_o affection_n which_o we_o can_v never_o hope_v to_o do_v till_o we_o have_v subdue_v they_o to_o the_o empire_n of_o our_o reason_n but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o be_v under_o the_o command_n of_o that_o one_o supreme_a end_n which_o our_o reason_n will_v propose_v to_o we_o as_o the_o utmost_a scope_n of_o our_o desire_n then_o and_o not_o till_o then_o will_v these_o scatter_a rivulet_n of_o our_o affection_n unite_v themselves_o in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o channel_n and_o flow_v towards_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ocean_n and_o then_o our_o mind_n will_v be_v at_o rest_n and_o all_o its_o contrary_a passion_n be_v lay_v which_o now_o like_o the_o boisterous_a wave_n dash_v one_o against_o another_o it_o will_v no_o long_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v ruffle_a into_o a_o storm_n but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o the_o change_n of_o this_o world_n will_v find_v itself_o perpetual_o inspire_v with_o the_o most_o calm_a and_o gentle_a thought_n chap._n iu._n of_o help_n to_o mortification_n give_v we_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o motive_n and_o argument_n for_o mortification_n which_o arise_v from_o consider_v the_o the_o internal_a motion_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n upon_o our_o soul_n i._o let_v we_o consider_v the_o external_a argument_n and_o motive_n of_o the_o gospel_n such_o as_o the_o promise_n and_o threat_n of_o it_o the_o great_a example_n of_o our_o saviour_n describe_v in_o it_o together_o with_o all_o those_o mighty_a consideration_n out_o of_o his_o passion_n and_o resurrection_n his_o intercession_n for_o we_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o his_o come_v to_o judge_v the_o world_n in_o the_o last_o day_n all_o which_o be_v the_o aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n who_o have_v reveal_v they_o to_o we_o and_o demonstrate_v their_o truth_n and_o divinity_n by_o sundry_a miraculous_a operation_n which_o be_v therefore_o call_v the_o evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o that_o whatsoever_o there_o be_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o our_o duty_n whatsoever_o counter-charm_n its_o
