though_o it_o rage_n it_o can_v rule_v it_o may_v strive_v but_o it_o can_v prevail_v therefore_o you_o may_v try_v yourselves_o by_o this_o whether_o the_o corruption_n and_o stir_n of_o your_o heart_n proceed_v from_o a_o mortify_a lust_n or_o no._n now_o see_v mortification_n be_v so_o hard_a a_o work_n and_o yet_o a_o work_n that_o of_o necessity_n must_v be_v do_v man_n also_o be_v so_o hardly_o draw_v to_o mortify_v their_o lust_n which_o they_o account_v as_o a_o part_n of_o themselves_o not_o to_o be_v part_v withal_o for_o nature_n herself_o have_v implant_v this_o principle_n in_o they_o every_o man_n ought_v to_o love_v himself_o what_o then_o shall_v move_v any_o man_n to_o mortify_v his_o lust_n therefore_o mortification_n for_o the_o better_a persuade_v of_o man_n unto_o this_o work_n we_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o motive_n to_o move_v every_o man_n to_o mortify_v his_o corruption_n the_o first_o motive_n to_o move_v all_o man_n to_o mortify_v sin_n be_v because_o there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n in_o sin_n sin_n motive_n can_v content_v the_o soul_n for_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n the_o further_a a_o man_n go_v on_o in_o sin_n the_o further_o he_o go_v on_o in_o sorrow_n for_o in_o every_o degree_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a unto_o every_o degree_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v a_o degree_n of_o joy_n i_o say_v the_o more_o thou_o get_v of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n of_o faith_n and_o regeneration_n the_o more_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o spiritual_a joy_n thou_o get_v for_o grace_n as_o natural_o produce_v joy_n as_o sin_n sorrow_n now_o if_o man_n do_v but_o consider_v this_o that_o be_v if_o they_o have_v any_o spiritual_a understanding_n to_o know_v that_o degree_n of_o sin_n do_v bring_v degree_n of_o sorrow_n they_o will_v not_o so_o run_v unto_o sin_n as_o they_o do_v but_o they_o will_v object_v unto_o i_o you_o be_v deceive_v object_n for_o there_o be_v pleasure_n in_o sin_n we_o have_v find_v pleasure_n in_o sin_n and_o what_o will_v you_o persuade_v we_o against_o our_o knowledge_n have_v we_o not_o reason_n to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o thing_n which_o we_o know_v be_v of_o a_o contrary_a nature_n will_v you_o persuade_v man_n that_o honey_n be_v not_o sweet_a who_o have_v taste_v of_o it_o if_o you_o shall_v bring_v a_o thousand_o argument_n they_o will_v not_o prevail_v even_o so_o we_o have_v feel_v sweetness_n in_o sin_n therefore_o we_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o the_o contrary_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o pleasure_n that_o be_v in_o sin_n if_o there_o be_v any_o pleasure_n be_v no_o true_a solid_a pleasure_n azâ—â—rer_n but_o a_o sick_a pleasure_n such_o a_o pleasure_n as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o a_o fever_n pleasure_n appear_v because_o that_o which_o give_v true_a content_n unto_o the_o soul_n be_v grace_n which_o ever_o be_v accompany_v with_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o this_o work_v that_o peace_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o pass_v all_o understanding_n phil._n 4._o 7._o whereas_o sin_n make_v not_o peace_n but_o war_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o where_o there_o be_v war_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v where_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o combustion_n among_o themselves_o there_o can_v be_v no_o pleasure_n a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o a_o dropsy_n may_v have_v pleasure_n to_o drink_v but_o his_o pleasure_n depend_v upon_o his_o disease_n if_o the_o disease_n be_v remove_v the_o pleasure_n will_v cease_v the_o second_o motive_n be_v because_o when_o man_n go_v about_o to_o satisfy_v their_o lust_n they_o go_v about_o a_o endless_a work_n now_o motive_n man_n in_o outward_a thing_n will_v not_o set_v themselves_o about_o a_o work_n if_o they_o do_v but_o know_v before_o that_o it_o will_v be_v endless_a that_o be_v that_o they_o can_v never_o finish_v it_o for_o every_o one_o love_n to_o go_v about_o thing_n of_o a_o finite_a nature_n which_o may_v be_v accomplish_v even_o so_o if_o man_n do_v but_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n they_o will_v not_o give_v themselves_o to_o satisfy_v thsir_fw-fr lust_n because_o they_o go_v about_o a_o work_n that_o be_v endless_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o horseleech_n which_o the_o wiseman_n speak_v of_o prov._n 30_o 15._o that_o the_o more_o it_o be_v give_v the_o more_o it_o crave_v but_o be_v never_o satisfy_v so_o the_o more_o you_o seek_v to_o satisfy_v sin_n the_o more_o it_o desire_n like_o the_o fire_n the_o more_o you_o cast_v into_o it_o the_o more_o it_o burn_v but_o if_o you_o will_v quench_v it_o then_o detract_v from_o it_o so_o if_o thou_o will_v have_v sin_n to_o die_v then_o detract_v from_o thy_o plasure_n from_o thy_o covetousness_n from_o thy_o pride_n a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o a_o fever_n if_o you_o will_v not_o increase_v his_o heat_n then_o keep_v he_o from_o cold_a drink_n and_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o but_o if_o you_o do_v satisfy_v the_o disease_n in_o these_o thing_n you_o do_v increase_v it_o so_o if_o you_o will_v not_o go_v about_o a_o endless_a work_n give_v your_o lust_n a_o peremptory_a denial_n please_v not_o sin_n for_o if_o you_o do_v you_o will_v displease_v god_n let_v this_o therefore_o move_v man_n to_o mortify_v their_o lust_n the_o three_o motive_n to_o move_v all_o man_n to_o mortify_v sin_n be_v because_o of_o the_o great_a danger_n it_o bring_v a_o man_n unto_o it_o make_v motive_n a_o man_n liable_a unto_o all_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n it_o take_v god_n be_v once_o in_o it_o it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o escape_v the_o understanding_n be_v the_o porter_n of_o the_o soul_n so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v spiritual_a life_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n do_v partaâ—e_v of_o it_o and_o so_o the_o whole_a be_v preserve_v now_o sin_n blind_v the_o understanding_n and_o when_o the_o understanding_n be_v misinform_v it_o misinform_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n that_o be_v it_o breed_v a_o disorder_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o when_o once_o there_o be_v a_o disorder_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o among_o the_o faculty_n than_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n become_v unprofitable_a to_o this_o effect_n the_o apostle_n say_v they_o become_v blind_a in_o their_o understanding_n and_o then_o they_o fall_v unto_o noisome_a lust_n give_v themselves_o unto_o a_o customary_a sin_v they_o become_v blind_a in_o their_o understanding_n that_o be_v it_o put_v out_o their_o eye_n it_o make_v they_o blind_a as_o beetle_n and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v blind_a he_o will_v run_v upon_o any_o dauger_v because_o he_o see_v it_o not_o even_o so_o when_o sin_n have_v put_v out_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o soul_n be_v in_o marvellous_a great_a danger_n of_o fall_v irrecoverable_o therefore_o let_v this_o move_v man_n to_o mortify_v sin_n the_o four_o motive_n to_o move_v all_o man_n to_o mortify_v sin_n be_v because_o sin_n will_v deceive_v man_n now_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o will_v willing_o be_v cozen_v every_o man_n motive_n will_v be_v plain_o deal_v withal_o therefore_o if_o man_n do_v but_o know_v this_o that_o if_o they_o give_v way_n unto_o their_o lust_n they_o will_v befool_v they_o sure_o man_n will_v not_o be_v so_o easy_o lead_v away_o by_o they_o but_o man_n will_v not_o believe_v this_o they_o can_v conceive_v how_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o deceit_n in_o sin_n see_v they_o be_v of_o so_o near_o a_o conjunction_n as_o to_o be_v a_o part_n
cut_v off_o and_o separate_v from_o the_o body_n for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o rest_n and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o like_a manner_n with_o these_o for_o all_o will_v join_v together_o for_o the_o mortify_n of_o sin_n one_o in_o another_o on_o the_o other_o side_n these_o weapon_n of_o unrighteousness_n they_o fight_v for_o one_o another_o against_o grace_n they_o be_v careful_a to_o perform_v the_o action_n of_o the_o old_a man_n and_o to_o fulfil_v every_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n four_o they_o be_v call_v member_n because_o they_o be_v as_o dear_a unto_o the_o heart_n as_o any_o member_n be_v unto_o the_o body_n 4._o and_o therefore_o in_o scripture_n they_o be_v call_v the_o right_a hand_n and_o the_o right_a eye_n mat._n 5._o 29._o that_o be_v they_o be_v as_o dear_a and_o stick_v as_o close_v unto_o the_o heart_n and_o will_v as_o hardly_o be_v 29._o separate_v from_o it_o as_o the_o near_a and_o dear_a member_n of_o the_o body_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o word_n member_n second_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o earthly_a member_n by_o earthly_a member_n be_v mean_v all_o earthly_a affection_n as_o immoderate_a member_n care_n inordinare_a lust_n or_o it_o be_v a_o deprave_a disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o be_v draw_v from_o heavenly_a thing_n to_o earthly_a that_o be_v it_o be_v draw_v from_o a_o high_a value_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n to_o a_o base_a esteem_n of_o they_o and_o from_o a_o base_a esteem_v of_o earthly_a thing_n unto_o a_o high_a esteem_n of_o they_o this_o be_v earthly_a mindedness_n but_o for_o the_o better_a explain_v of_o this_o point_n first_o we_o will_v show_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v second_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v for_o the_o first_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v it_o be_v to_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n or_o heavenly_a thing_n in_o a_o earthly_a mind_v manner_n that_o be_v when_o the_o soul_n be_v deprave_v so_o of_o spiritual_a life_n that_o it_o look_v upon_o grace_n and_o salvation_n with_o a_o carnal_a eye_n when_o it_o be_v represent_v unto_o it_o because_o it_o be_v but_o natural_a it_o be_v not_o enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n now_o till_o a_o man_n be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o can_v see_v spiritual_a thing_n in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n howsoever_o i_o grant_v that_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n a_o man_n be_v endue_v with_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n thereby_o may_v come_v to_o discern_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n yet_o so_o as_o but_o by_o a_o commonillumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o we_o call_v it_o not_o as_o they_o be_v but_o only_o as_o he_o conceive_v of_o they_o by_o his_o natural_a reason_n for_o first_o by_o nature_n a_o man_n may_v conceive_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o not_o spiritual_o for_o nature_n can_v go_v no_o further_o than_o nature_n now_o what_o be_v compatible_a and_o agreeable_a to_o nature_n he_o have_v a_o taste_n of_o he_o see_v thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v suitable_a unto_o his_o nature_n but_o nature_n can_v look_v no_o further_o for_o this_o be_v the_o property_n of_o nature_n it_o go_v all_o by_o the_o outward_a sense_n and_o appetite_n and_o no_o man_n can_v apply_v spiritual_a thing_n by_o the_o sense_n but_o earthly_a thing_n second_o by_o the_o affection_n a_o man_n may_v conceive_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n for_o the_o affection_n be_v the_o proper_a seat_n 2_o of_o love_n and_o a_o man_n be_v endue_v with_o love_n may_v be_v affect_v with_o heavenly_a thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o nature_n and_o hence_o may_v arise_v fear_n of_o lose_v they_o not_o because_o they_o be_v heavenly_a thing_n but_o because_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o his_o nature_n beside_o the_o affection_n may_v restrain_v he_o and_o turn_v he_o from_o esteem_v of_o thing_n base_a to_o a_o esteem_v of_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o excellent_a and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o affection_n to_o good_a that_o prove_v a_o man_n to_o be_v good_a but_o it_o be_v the_o rice_n of_o the_o affection_n that_o be_v the_o ground_n from_o whence_o they_o spring_v namely_o from_o a_o heart_n enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n herod_n may_v affect_v john_n and_o johns_n doctrine_n but_o this_o be_v not_o breed_v by_o the_o spirit_n but_o a_o carnal_a affection_n three_o by_o the_o understanding_n or_o mind_n a_o man_n may_v come_v to_o conceive_v of_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n renew_v his_o mind_n may_v be_v enlighten_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v as_o for_o example_n first_o he_o may_v see_v a_o virtue_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n he_o may_v conceive_v of_o they_o 1_o by_o look_v into_o they_o so_o that_o a_o virtue_n and_o power_n may_v appear_v in_o they_o excel_v every_o virtue_n in_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o yet_o not_o renew_v second_o if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o more_o noble_a spirit_n he_o may_v do_v good_a either_o for_o church_n or_o commonwealth_n 2_o he_o may_v be_v very_o liberal_a and_o bountiful_a unto_o any_o that_o shall_v seek_v unto_o he_o in_o this_o kind_n and_o hereupon_o may_v grow_v remiss_a after_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n and_o so_o be_v not_o all_o so_o violent_o carry_v away_o after_o covetousness_n and_o yet_o not_o be_v remove_v three_o he_o may_v come_v one_o as_o these_o declare_v of_o or_o else_o as_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o know_v in_o his_o word_n as_o we_o see_v in_o nebuchadnezar_n dan._n 4._o 34._o and_o yet_o be_v not_o renew_v 34._o five_o he_o may_v feel_v the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o promise_n 5_o of_o remission_n of_o sin_n justification_n and_o reconciliation_n and_o rejoice_v in_o they_o as_o herod_n hear_v john_n glad_o mark_n 6._o 20._o that_o be_v he_o be_v glad_a to_o hear_v john_n preach_v repentance_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n he_o feel_v sweetness_n 20._o in_o this_o so_o he_o be_v content_a to_o hear_v that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o he_o to_o have_v his_o brother_n wife_n but_o he_o be_v not_o content_a to_o obey_v in_o like_a manner_n any_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v find_v sweetness_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o yet_o not_o be_v renew_v six_o he_o may_v believe_v the_o resurrection_n to_o life_n 6._o and_o hereupon_o rejoice_v after_o it_o because_o he_o believe_v there_o be_v areward_n lay_v up_o for_o the_o righteous_a with_o christ_n and_o may_v desire_v to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o it_o with_o they_o and_o yet_o not_o be_v renew_v for_o if_o you_o look_v into_o this_o man_n none_o of_o all_o these_o have_v the_o first_o seat_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o they_o be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o second_o room_n or_o closet_n for_o earthly_a thing_n have_v the_o first_o and_o principal_a seat_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o these_o come_v in_o after_o as_o handmaid_n or_o servant_n unto_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o have_v no_o spiritual_a taste_n to_o he_o to_o make_v this_o plain_a let_v we_o consider_v the_o order_n of_o soul_n the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o mind_n be_v the_o principal_a faculty_n and_o this_o rule_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n now_o the_o mind_n be_v earthly_a dispose_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n can_v go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o mind_n guide_v they_o every_o faculty_n have_v a_o appetite_n and_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n have_v a_o understanding_n which_o govern_v now_o look_v what_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n love_v or_o hate_v that_o the_o will_n will_v or_o will_v not_o for_o the_o will_n be_v but_o the_o appetite_n that_o follow_v the_o understanding_n again_o every_o faculty_n in_o man_n have_v a_o sense_n and_o by_o that_o it_o be_v draw_v to_o affect_v that_o which_o it_o choose_v for_o the_o desire_n follow_v the_o sense_n and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o one_o faculty_n so_o it_o be_v with_o all_o the_o other_o of_o the_o faculty_n for_o the_o faculty_n suit_v all_o after_o the_o
seek_v any_o further_a illumination_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o the_o spiritual_a man_n 2._o be_v thus_o mind_v and_o enlighten_v yet_o he_o must_v seek_v for_o more_o because_o this_o knowledge_n be_v but_o in_o part_n for_o we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n say_v the_o apostle_n 1_o corinth_n 13._o 12._o that_o be_v though_o we_o know_v much_o of_o heavenly_a thing_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o part_n of_o that_o we_o ought_v to_o know_v or_o that_o we_o shall_v know_v therefore_o we_o must_v ever_o be_v breed_v in_o the_o spirit_n we_o must_v be_v ever_o grow_v towards_o perfection_n now_o there_o can_v be_v no_o grow_v till_o the_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v for_o this_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o so_o far_o as_o the_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v so_o far_o be_v the_o will_v enlighten_v and_o not_o only_o that_o but_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n be_v enlighten_v according_o but_o you_o may_v again_o say_v unto_o i_o if_o this_o light_n 3._o which_o you_o speak_v of_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o mind_n then_o how_o far_o do_v this_o light_n redound_v unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n see_v the_o other_o seem_v not_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o this_o light_n because_o many_o time_n there_o be_v such_o rebellion_n in_o they_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o earthly_a and_o heavenly_a mindedness_n be_v seat_v in_o the_o understanding_n will_n or_o mind_n 3._o of_o a_o man_n as_o for_o example_n a_o lantern_n be_v the_o proper_a seat_n of_o a_o candle_n now_o it_o receive_v not_o the_o candle_n simile_n for_o itself_o neither_o keep_v it_o the_o light_n to_o itself_o but_o it_o receive_v it_o in_o to_o preserve_v light_n and_o to_o communicate_v it_o to_o other_o even_o so_o do_v the_o understanding_n it_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v light_n for_o itself_o alone_o but_o by_o preserve_v of_o it_o it_o do_v communicate_v his_o light_n to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n so_o the_o apostle_n say_v you_o be_v beget_v by_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n james_n 1._o 18._o now_o truth_n be_v proper_o in_o the_o understanding_n it_o be_v first_o there_o and_o thence_o it_o do_v communicate_v unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n by_o redundance_n i_o say_v by_o redundance_n but_o not_o by_o infusion_n that_o be_v the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o the_o understanding_n do_v redound_v to_o the_o enlighten_v of_o rest_n but_o it_o be_v convey_v to_o the_o rest_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o a_o man_n be_v renew_v now_o for_o the_o better_a explayn_v of_o this_o we_o shall_v faculty_n show_v how_o the_o understanding_n be_v enlighten_v may_v do_v good_a unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n first_o the_o reason_n or_o wisdom_n be_v first_o enlighten_v it_o rest_v not_o there_o but_o flow_v by_o a_o redoundancy_n 1_o unto_o the_o other_o faculty_n and_o thereupon_o may_v take_v away_o those_o let_n and_o impediment_n unto_o good_a as_o thus_o whereas_o ignorance_n or_o infidelity_n be_v former_o a_o hindrance_n unto_o good_a thing_n make_v he_o that_o be_v ignorant_a uncapable_a of_o the_o mystery_n of_o salvation_n so_o that_o he_o can_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o in_o the_o mire_n even_o so_o these_o be_v ashamed_a to_o defile_v themselves_o while_o they_o be_v under_o good_a education_n but_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v it_o will_v soon_o appear_v sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v the_o use_n of_o this_o brief_o be_v for_o examination_n unto_o every_o use._n one_o to_o enter_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o examine_v himself_o by_o these_o rule_n whether_o his_o sin_n be_v mortify_v or_o no_o and_o according_o to_o judge_v of_o he_o else_o the_o second_o question_n be_v for_o the_o comfort_v of_o weak_a 2._o christian_n see_v there_o be_v corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o the_o lust_n and_o stir_n of_o the_o heart_n proceed_v from_o a_o wound_a corruption_n or_o else_o be_v the_o action_n of_o a_o unmortified_a lust_n against_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v because_o it_o have_v receive_v the_o deadly_a wound_n but_o if_o it_o be_v not_o our_o of_o love_n unto_o god_n that_o thou_o mortifie_v sin_n if_o thy_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n have_v much_o rebellion_n in_o it_o whatsoever_o thou_o think_v of_o thyself_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v in_o thou_o every_o thing_n violent_o upon_o he_o that_o have_v wound_v he_o yet_o let_v he_o be_v never_o so_o violent_a in_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o action_n he_o sink_v down_o when_o he_o think_v to_o do_v the_o most_o harm_n than_o he_o be_v the_o most_o unable_a because_o he_o have_v receive_v his_o deadly_a wound_n whereby_o he_o have_v lose_v the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o nature_n which_o otherwise_o may_v not_o straight_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o three_o effect_n to_o discover_v the_o immoderatenesse_n of_o affection_n be_v when_o they_o produce_v evil_a action_n 3._o which_o ordinary_o they_o god_n and_o so_o become_v inordinate_a now_o follow_v what_o it_o be_v to_o mortify_v they_o which_o we_o have_v former_o speak_v of_o at_o large_a in_o a_o word_n it_o affection_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o turn_n of_o carnal_a affection_n into_o spiritual_a and_o natural_a affection_n to_o a_o high_a and_o more_o noble_a end_n that_o be_v to_o eat_v and_o to_o drink_v not_o only_o for_o nature_n benefit_n but_o for_o god_n to_o do_v he_o honour_n that_o be_v the_o right_a end_n for_o to_o mortify_v be_v to_o rectify_v and_o to_o bring_v thing_n that_o be_v out_o of_o compass_n to_o rule_v to_o see_v where_o they_o be_v inordinate_a and_o so_o to_o turn_v carnal_a and_o natural_a affection_n all_o into_o spitituall_a in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o will_v see_v some_o reason_n why_o mortify_v they_o be_v to_o be_v mortify_v for_o reason_n do_v wonderful_o persuade_v and_o necessity_n of_o mortify_v once_o apprehend_v make_v man_n go_v about_o it_o let_v we_o but_o consider_v of_o what_o moment_n it_o be_v to_o have_v they_o mortify_v what_o ill_a if_o we_o do_v not_o what_o good_a if_o we_o do_v the_o first_o reason_n be_v because_o affection_n be_v action_n affection_n do_v obey_v the_o will_n and_o the_o will_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o innocency_n but_o now_o that_o subordination_n be_v take_v away_o and_o that_o union_n dissolve_v and_o now_o the_o affection_n move_v the_o heart_n as_o the_o wind_n the_o sea_n whether_o it_o will_v or_o no_o therefore_o it_o stand_v you_o upon_o to_o keep_v they_o under_o a_o mettle_a horse_n be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o rider_n if_o he_o be_v keep_v under_o simil._n the_o bridle_n so_o the_o affection_n if_o they_o be_v good_a the_o strong_a the_o better_o but_o the_o devil_n have_v no_o better_a factor_n they_o the_o affection_n be_v if_o they_o be_v ill_a they_o be_v the_o best_a opportunity_n for_o he_o to_o do_v mischief_n by_o the_o second_o reason_n why_o make_v we_o good_a or_o evil_a man_n that_o be_v but_o one_o opinion_n and_o judgement_n but_o as_o the_o affection_n be_v and_o as_o the_o inclination_n of_o the_o will_n be_v so_o be_v
a_o man_n good_a or_o bad_a job_n be_v call_v a_o perfect_a man_n because_o he_o fear_v god_n and_o bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o delight_v in_o god_n and_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o good_a to_o they_o that_o love_n god_n it_o be_v the_o common_a phrase_n of_o scripture_n to_o judge_v of_o man_n by_o his_o affection_n when_o his_o love_n be_v right_a his_o fear_n be_v right_a and_o his_o sorrow_n right_a therefore_o look_v to_o thy_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o thy_o will_n so_o as_o the_o affection_n be_v so_o be_v the_o man_n if_o man_n action_n be_v give_v true_a content_n unto_o a_o christian_a spiritual_a thing_n they_o change_v not_o they_o be_v constant_a immutable_a and_o permanent_a as_o justification_n remission_n of_o sin_n and_o reconciliation_n these_o be_v not_o subject_a unto_o any_o change_n they_o can_v be_v lose_v for_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v set_v upon_o heavenly_a thing_n the_o comfort_n can_v be_v remove_v the_o heart_n there_o be_v content_a second_o i_o say_v they_o can_v give_v no_o true_a content_n unto_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n if_o we_o consider_v the_o condition_n and_o the_o condition_n disposition_n of_o the_o person_n and_o that_o two_o way_n first_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o as_o good_a man_n and_o so_o belong_v to_o god_n or_o second_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o as_o bad_a man_n and_o so_o not_o belong_v unto_o god_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o outward_a thing_n can_v yield_v any_o true_a content_n unto_o either_o first_o if_o they_o be_v good_a man_n and_o so_o belong_v unto_o god_n yet_o there_o can_v be_v such_o sweetness_n in_o they_o as_o to_o give_v good_a true_a content_n unto_o the_o soul_n for_o many_o time_n they_o be_v a_o cause_n or_o at_o least_o a_o mean_n to_o draw_v affliction_n from_o god_n upon_o a_o man_n for_o god_n be_v a_o jealous_a god_n that_o be_v a_o god_n hate_v spiritual_a idolatry_n now_o when_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v immoderate_o set_v upon_o when_o i_o say_v his_o heart_n run_v a_o whore_v from_o god_n after_o earthly_a thing_n whether_o it_o be_v after_o riches_n honour_n or_o pleasure_n the_o lord_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o he_o and_o whip_v he_o home_o for_o it_o as_o we_o see_v in_o david_n and_o ely_n if_o david_n will_v set_v his_o heart_n upon_o absalon_n the_o lord_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o his_o absalon_n above_o all_o the_o rest_n if_o ely_n will_v not_o correct_v his_o son_n but_o let_v they_o dishonour_v the_o worship_n &_o service_n of_o god_n god_n will_v correct_v they_o himself_o and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n for_o god_n have_v a_o fatherly_a care_n over_o his_o child_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o suffer_v or_o else_o not_o so_o good_a as_o that_o from_o which_o he_o be_v draw_v and_o the_o truth_n be_v he_o that_o â—seth_v eloquence_n in_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n do_v nothing_o else_o but_o draw_v the_o heart_n away_o from_o affect_v the_o pure_a word_n unto_o that_o which_o have_v no_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o save_v again_o he_o preach_v not_o with_o entice_a word_n lest_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v of_o none_o effect_v that_o be_v if_o i_o shall_v preach_v myself_o in_o mix_v any_o thing_n with_o the_o word_n that_o will_v take_v away_o the_o power_n of_o the_o word_n the_o word_n as_o we_o find_v they_o neither_o in_o they_o to_o show_v ourselves_o but_o only_a makâ—_n they_o as_o a_o mean_n to_o help_v we_o for_o this_o work_n as_o for_o example_n the_o child_n of_o israel_n may_v whet_v their_o scythe_n upon_o all_o the_o stone_n of_o the_o philistines_n so_o a_o minister_n may_v sharpen_v his_o faculty_n with_o arts._n a_o man_n that_o keep_v sheep_n he_o feed_v simile_n they_o with_o hay_n not_o because_o he_o look_v that_o they_o shall_v bring_v forth_o hay_n but_o lamb_n and_o wool_n even_o so_o let_v a_o man_n use_v these_o art_n and_o science_n yet_o not_o to_o bring_v forth_o eloquence_n but_o to_o make_v we_o more_o able_a to_o preach_v the_o pure_a word_n it_o be_v good_a therefore_o that_o we_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o eclipse_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o word_n by_o these_o we_o know_v apparel_fw-mi though_o it_o be_v lay_v in_o pure_a gold_n yet_o so_o much_o as_o be_v cover_v of_o it_o detract_v from_o the_o excellency_n of_o it_o therefore_o it_o be_v better_a that_o imile_n it_o be_v alone_o so_o it_o be_v the_o word_n though_o the_o word_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v gild_v with_o eloquence_n or_o philosophy_n yet_o it_o be_v better_a that_o it_o be_v alone_o for_o so_o much_o of_o it_o as_o be_v cover_v with_o these_o so_o much_o of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o word_n be_v hide_v but_o you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o that_o we_o use_v eloquence_n 4._o and_o the_o like_a that_o man_n may_v the_o better_o conceive_v we_o and_o that_o our_o ministry_n may_v the_o better_o be_v respect_v for_o we_o find_v this_o kind_n of_o teach_v most_o please_v they_o and_o which_o most_o man_n affect_v therefore_o if_o we_o shall_v not_o use_v such_o and_o such_o phrase_n of_o eloquence_n we_o shall_v be_v little_o respect_v among_o they_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o every_o minister_n be_v or_o shall_v be_v a_o physician_n now_o we_o know_v that_o the_o part_n of_o a_o wise_a eloquence_n physicianis_fw-la not_o to_o satisfy_v the_o humour_n of_o his_o patient_n for_o so_o he_o may_v increase_v the_o disease_n but_o to_o labour_v to_o cure_v he_o by_o minister_a such_o physic_n unto_o he_o as_o he_o know_v by_o experience_n the_o necessity_n of_o the_o disease_n require_v even_o so_o to_o humour_n man_n in_o preach_v be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o cure_v they_o or_o to_o change_v the_o evil_a disposition_n of_o their_o nature_n but_o rather_o a_o mean_n to_o increase_v their_o disease_n and_o to_o make_v they_o obstinate_a and_o rebellious_a against_o the_o word_n when_o it_o shall_v come_v home_o unto_o they_o for_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o word_n be_v so_o oppose_v when_o it_o be_v preach_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v by_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o power_n but_o because_o it_o cross_v their_o corruption_n it_o come_v not_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n that_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v therefore_o the_o best_a way_n shall_v be_v to_o preach_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v to_o apply_v the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n unto_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n and_o so_o to_o purge_v out_o the_o sickness_n of_o the_o soul_n before_o it_o grow_v incurable_a there_o be_v a_o disease_n that_o many_o woman_n have_v at_o their_o stomach_n whereby_o they_o desire_v simile_n to_o eat_v ash_n and_o other_o thing_n which_o poison_v nature_n now_o if_o they_o be_v not_o cure_v of_o it_o by_o purge_v out_o the_o humour_n that_o lie_v there_o but_o be_v satisfy_v in_o it_o it_o will_v at_o last_o destroy_v they_o so_o it_o will_v be_v with_o these_o man_n to_o satisfy_v they_o in_o this_o sickness_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o cure_v they_o but_o to_o make_v they_o more_o incurable_a therefore_o let_v minister_n look_v that_o they_o preach_v the_o pure_a word_n and_o nothing_o but_o the_o pure_a word_n and_o let_v man_n examine_v themselves_o whether_o they_o be_v heavenly_a
