in_o these_o three_o particular_n the_o first_o be_v this_o when_o we_o have_v conceive_v aright_o of_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n thereof_o and_o the_o punishment_n due_a thereunto_o then_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o bare_a consideration_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o never_o leave_v the_o heart_n be_v still_o muse_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o bring_v these_o bless_a truth_n home_o to_o the_o soul_n &_o bind_v these_o thing_n on_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n hold_v they_o and_o fasten_v they_o there_o force_v they_o upon_o the_o soul_n that_o the_o heart_n may_v not_o make_v a_o escape_n take_v notice_n of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n i_o will_v have_v you_o consider_v of_o never_o leave_v meditate_v till_o you_o find_v your_o heart_n so_o affect_v with_o the_o evil_a as_o your_o mind_n &_o judgement_n conceive_v of_o the_o evil_a before_o namely_o let_v the_o heart_n feel_v that_o evil_a it_o conceive_v let_v the_o soul_n feel_v that_o gall_n to_o be_v in_o sin_n which_o the_o mind_n apprehend_v to_o be_v in_o it_o you_o see_v these_o sin_n loathsome_a and_o abominable_a make_v the_o heart_n feel_v they_o and_o be_v affect_v with_o they_o the_o heart_n will_v fly_v off_o now_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o cunning_a of_o a_o christian_n to_o lay_v at_o the_o heart_n and_o pursue_v it_o continual_o and_o hold_v these_o truth_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o at_o last_o it_o may_v be_v under_o the_o dint_n of_o the_o blow_n and_o the_o power_n of_o god_n make_v the_o soul_n feel_v and_o find_v and_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o the_o gall_n and_o bitterness_n and_o vileness_n of_o the_o evil_a as_o before_o it_o conceive_v it_o so_o to_o be_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o man_n to_o exercise_v himself_o in_o the_o meditation_n of_o sin_n but_o a_o man_n must_v bring_v his_o soul_n in_o subjection_n under_o the_o power_n of_o that_o meditation_n a_o man_n must_v not_o only_o chew_v his_o meat_n but_o he_o must_v swallow_v it_o also_o if_o he_o mean_v to_o have_v it_o nourish_v he_o meditation_n be_v when_o the_o heart_n swallow_v down_o these_o sin_n that_o be_v when_o he_o labour_v so_o to_o be_v affect_v with_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o as_o it_o do_v require_v meditation_n in_o this_o case_n be_v like_o the_o beleagure_v of_o a_o city_n when_o a_o city_n be_v wise_o &_o strong_o beleaguer_v and_o beset_v round_o about_o they_o do_v two_o thing_n first_o they_o batter_v it_o from_o without_o as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v and_o second_o they_o cut_v off_o all_o provision_n and_o relief_n from_o come_v in_o and_o so_o the_o city_n be_v partly_o batter_v from_o without_o as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v and_o be_v hinder_v from_o all_o relief_n come_v in_o in_o conclusion_n when_o they_o see_v the_o enemy_n be_v strong_a and_o no_o provision_n can_v come_v to_o they_o they_o be_v content_a to_o yield_v the_o city_n and_o render_v up_o themselves_o and_o if_o they_o send_v a_o parley_n to_o he_o that_o do_v four_o and_o twenty_o hour_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v do_v nothing_o but_o lay_v this_o salve_n to_o the_o wound_n and_o take_v it_o off_o it_o will_v never_o heal_v the_o wound_n and_o no_o wonder_n why_o he_o will_v not_o let_v it_o lie_v on_o the_o best_a salve_n under_o heaven_n will_v not_o heal_v a_o sore_n and_o eat_v out_o a_o corruption_n unless_o it_o be_v bind_v on_o and_o let_v lie_v so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n many_o a_o soul_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o his_o heart_n be_v touch_v for_o his_o sin_n and_o his_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v awaken_v but_o when_o he_o go_v out_o of_o the_o church_n all_o be_v go_v his_o affection_n die_v and_o his_o heart_n die_v and_o his_o conscience_n be_v not_o touch_v no_o wonder_n you_o will_v not_o â—oule_n whereby_o the_o heart_n say_v i_o will_v have_v this_o and_o i_o will_v not_o have_v that_o as_o the_o understanding_n be_v settle_v in_o the_o head_n and_o keep_v his_o sentinel_n there_o so_o the_o will_n be_v seat_v in_o the_o heart_n when_o it_o come_v to_o take_v or_o refuse_v this_o be_v the_o office_n of_o the_o will_n and_o â—t_a discover_v his_o act_n there_o as_o our_o saviour_n say_v 1â—_n where_o your_o treasure_n be_v there_o will_v your_o heart_n be_v also_o and_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v a_o man_n confess_v with_o his_o mouth_n and_o believe_v with_o his_o heart_n so_o than_o they_o be_v not_o only_o prick_v as_o with_o a_o pin_n but_o this_o sorrow_n seize_v upon_o the_o soul_n and_o pierce_v unto_o the_o very_a will_n it_o be_v not_o outward_o overly_o sorrow_n but_o that_o which_o go_v to_o the_o very_a root_n and_o enter_v into_o the_o very_a heart_n 〈…〉_z from_o these_o word_n thus_o open_v the_o doctrine_n i_o may_v have_v handle_v from_o this_o point_n be_v that_o sin_n unpardoned_a be_v of_o a_o pierce_a nature_n they_o be_v not_o only_o prick_v because_o they_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o their_o sin_n pierce_v they_o but_o i_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o this_o point_n though_o otherwise_o be_v be_v very_o useful_a the_o use_n be_v this_o may_v take_v off_o the_o imagination_n of_o those_o that_o think_v there_o 〈◊〉_d no_o delight_n but_o in_o sinful_a course_n they_o be_v much_o deceive_v there_o be_v no_o gall_n but_o in_o sin_n and_o there_o be_v no_o sorrow_n but_o from_o sin_n
and_o stubbornness_n be_v such_o vile_a sin_n in_o other_o than_o they_o be_v so_o in_o i_o and_o as_o there_o must_v be_v a_o sight_n of_o our_o personal_a particular_a sin_n so_o second_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v set_v down_o with_o the_o audience_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o sinner_n shall_v be_v so_o convict_v as_o to_o yield_v and_o give_v way_n to_o that_o which_o be_v know_v as_o not_o seek_v any_o shift_n or_o way_n to_o oppose_v that_o truth_n which_o be_v reveal_v his_o particular_a apprehension_n of_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o indictment_n of_o a_o sinner_n before_o god_n and_o his_o conviction_n be_v that_o which_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o such_o a_o pass_n that_o the_o heart_n will_v not_o nay_o it_o dare_v not_o nay_o which_o be_v more_o it_o can_v escape_v from_o the_o truth_n reveal_v as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v only_o arrest_v and_o no_o more_o he_o may_v escape_v therefore_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o particular_o to_o arrest_v the_o soul_n and_o bring_v it_o under_o command_n that_o it_o can_v shift_v from_o the_o truth_n reveal_v when_o the_o lord_n come_v to_o make_v rack_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o as_o he_o mean_v to_o do_v good_a unto_o the_o text_n say_v he_o will_v reprove_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v he_o will_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o wickedness_n he_o will_v set_v the_o soul_n in_o such_o a_o stand_n that_o it_o shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o say_v for_o itself_o he_o can_v shift_v it_o off_o for_o there_o be_v in_o every_o man_n heart_n natural_o such_o corrupt_a carnal_a plead_n that_o it_o labour_n to_o defeat_v and_o put_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o word_n that_o it_o may_v not_o come_v home_o to_o the_o heart_n as_o a_o man_n in_o battle_n array_n labour_v to_o put_v by_o the_o blow_n that_o it_o may_v not_o hit_v his_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o corrupt_a heart_n when_o the_o word_n come_v home_o to_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o do_v sometime_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o drunkard_n or_o a_o adulterer_n or_o a_o murderer_n and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n seem_v to_o stab_v the_o heart_n they_o put_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n by_o carnal_a shift_n and_o so_o break_v the_o power_n of_o it_o that_o it_o can_v have_v its_o full_a blow_n upon_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o the_o word_n take_v no_o place_n to_o any_o purpose_n in_o they_o now_o this_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n take_v away_o all_o shift_n that_o the_o soul_n have_v nothing_o to_o say_v for_o itself_o and_o pluck_v away_o all_o defence_n that_o the_o edge_n of_o the_o word_n can_v be_v blunt_v but_o that_o it_o will_v fall_v flat_a on_o the_o heart_n this_o be_v that_o i_o will_v put_v to_o your_o consideration_n punctual_o when_o there_o be_v that_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n reveal_v to_o the_o soul_n so_o powerful_o that_o it_o prevail_v with_o the_o heart_n and_o it_o give_v way_n thereto_o so_o that_o all_o the_o reply_n and_o plea_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v take_v away_o and_o the_o soul_n fall_v under_o the_o stroke_n of_o the_o word_n not_o quarrel_v but_o yield_v itself_o that_o the_o word_n may_v work_v upon_o it_o and_o withal_o there_o be_v a_o restless_a amazement_n put_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o a_o kind_n of_o dazzle_v the_o eye_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o content_a now_o before_o it_o see_v the_o worst_a of_o his_o sin_n that_o be_v sinner_n and_o the_o lord_n hate_v i_o too_o say_v the_o soul_n for_o i_o be_o guilty_a of_o that_o sin_n many_o time_n when_o a_o sinner_n come_v into_o the_o congregation_n and_o attend_v unto_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o salvation_n if_o now_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o work_v mighty_o at_o last_o the_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v and_o the_o minister_n meet_v with_o his_o corruption_n as_o though_o he_o be_v in_o his_o bosom_n and_o he_o answer_v all_o his_o cavil_v and_o take_v away_o all_o his_o objection_n with_o that_o the_o soul_n begin_v to_o be_v amaze_v to_o think_v that_o god_n shall_v meet_v with_o he_o in_o this_o manner_n and_o say_v if_o this_o be_v so_o as_o it_o be_v for_o aught_o i_o know_v and_o if_o all_o be_v true_a that_o the_o minister_n say_v than_o the_o lord_n be_v merciful_a unto_o my_o soul_n i_o be_o the_o most_o miserable_a sinner_n that_o ever_o be_v bear_v give_v i_o leave_v to_o open_v a_o passage_n or_o two_o this_o way_n suppose_v there_o minister_n call_v upon_o he_o for_o see_v what_o god_n say_v to_o such_o 17.11_o in_o isaiah_n it_o be_v a_o people_n of_o no_o understanding_n therefore_o he_o that_o make_v he_o will_v not_o have_v mercy_n on_o they_o and_o he_o that_o form_v they_o will_v show_v they_o no_o favour_n you_o think_v to_o carry_v all_o away_o with_o ignorance_n but_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n will_v show_v you_o he_o frequent_v the_o ordinance_n more_o diligent_o and_o say_v if_o it_o be_v so_o my_o case_n be_v fearful_a in_o conclusion_n he_o find_v every_o minister_n say_v so_o and_o all_o write_n confirm_v it_o and_o he_o see_v it_o be_v so_o indeed_o and_o it_o be_v the_o will_n and_o way_n of_o god_n then_o the_o soul_n be_v cast_v and_o say_v i_o see_v this_o be_v just_a my_o estate_n and_o condition_n &_o therefore_o woe_n to_o i_o that_o ever_o i_o be_v bear_v this_o be_v right_a conviction_n and_o though_o his_o carnal_a neighbour_n come_v to_o he_o and_o begin_v to_o cheer_v he_o up_o and_o say_v the_o lord_n be_v more_o merciful_a than_o man_n be_v minister_n must_v say_v something_o etc._n etc._n if_o the_o heart_n be_v true_o convict_v it_o return_v this_o answer_n and_o hate_v such_o wretch_n he_o hate_v i_o now_o there_o be_v no_o escape_n there_o be_v no_o plea_n at_o all_o he_o will_v not_o go_v away_o &_o say_v there_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n minister_n many_o say_v what_o they_o will_n no_o no_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v true_o convict_v of_o sin_n yield_v itself_o 7.20_o and_o say_v i_o have_v sin_v oh_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o thou_o preserver_n of_o man_n say_v job_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v lord_n i_o have_v no_o plea_n at_o all_o to_o make_v nor_o no_o argument_n to_o allege_v for_o myself_o i_o only_o yield_v up_o the_o buckler_n i_o can_v say_v so_o bad_a of_o myself_o as_o i_o be_o i_o have_v sin_v lord_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v unto_o thou_o oh_o thou_o preserver_n of_o man_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n to_o endeavour_v or_o desire_v after_o any_o mercy_n and_o i_o can_v bring_v my_o soul_n nor_o submit_v my_o will_n to_o yield_v and_o therefore_o shall_v i_o ever_o have_v any_o mercy_n answ._n why_o be_o answ._n yes_o for_o as_o god_n be_v al-sufficient_a and_o his_o promise_n free_a so_o he_o have_v plenty_n of_o mercy_n for_o the_o worst_a he_o exceed_v in_o mercy_n all_o the_o sin_n that_o can_v be_v except_o that_o against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o therefore_o the_o soul_n throw_v itself_o upon_o this_o the_o apostle_n say_v where_o sin_n abound_v grace_n abound_v much_o more_o lest_o any_o man_n shall_v say_v 4.20_o let_v we_o sin_n that_o grace_n may_v abound_v the_o text_n say_v in_o another_o place_n who_o damnation_n be_v just_a this_o knock_v off_o finger_n though_o by_o hatred_n the_o soul_n be_v bring_v to_o go_v away_o from_o those_o carnal_a lust_n and_o corruption_n with_o a_o secret_a dislike_n of_o those_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v be_v weary_v withal_o in_o all_o these_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o patient_a and_o undergo_v the_o work_n of_o humble_v and_o break_v rather_o than_o it_o be_v any_o way_n active_a and_o operative_a thus_o the_o heart_n be_v bring_v thus_o far_o oh_o he_o cry_v to_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n be_v there_o ever_o any_o poor_a sinner_n thus_o pester_v with_o a_o vile_a heart_n oh_o that_o this_o heart_n shall_v ever_o be_v so_o opposite_a against_o the_o lord_n lord_n except_o i_o have_v a_o better_a heart_n i_o will_v i_o have_v none_o at_o all_o thus_o the_o heart_n loathe_v itself_o and_o in_o what_o measure_n the_o they_o have_v show_v i_o my_o sin_n and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o my_o soul_n second_o as_o the_o soul_n desire_v to_o have_v sin_n reveal_v so_o it_o desire_v to_o have_v sin_n kill_v and_o it_o make_v no_o matter_n how_o it_o be_v kill_v or_o by_o who_o so_o it_o be_v kill_v at_o all_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o soul_n which_o true_o hate_v sin_n be_v ever_o seek_v to_o those_o mean_n that_o be_v most_o able_a to_o give_v strength_n to_o he_o and_o to_o over_o come_v his_o corruption_n and_o be_v
well_o please_v that_o any_o minister_n shall_v meet_v with_o the_o base_a haunt_n of_o his_o heart_n kill_v and_o if_o the_o word_n hit_v &_o wound_v that_o master-sinne_n of_o he_o he_o be_v marvellous_a content_n therewith_o he_o care_v not_o from_o who_o the_o help_n come_v the_o sharp_a and_o keen_a reproof_n that_o will_v shake_v his_o very_a heart_n and_o draw_v blood_n out_o of_o sin_n and_o the_o most_o powerful_a deliverer_n of_o god_n word_n that_o divide_v between_o the_o marrow_n and_o the_o bone_n he_o like_v best_o nay_o though_o the_o great_a cannon_n roar_v and_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o see_v sin_n in_o other_o but_o so_o far_o as_o god_n have_v put_v authority_n and_o opportunity_n into_o his_o hand_n he_o pursue_v it_o with_o deadly_a indignation_n as_o a_o man_n that_o hate_v a_o murderer_n he_o will_v not_o only_o keep_v he_o from_o his_o own_o house_n but_o he_o pursue_v he_o even_o to_o the_o place_n of_o justice_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o true_o hate_v sin_n will_v not_o only_o keep_v sin_n from_o his_o own_o heart_n but_o he_o will_v pluck_v it_o from_o the_o heart_n of_o other_o so_o far_o as_o possible_o he_o may_v when_o haman_n have_v a_o spleen_n against_o mordecai_n he_o be_v not_o only_o desirous_a to_o kill_v he_o but_o he_o will_v kill_v all_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n this_o be_v hatred_n indeed_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o break_a heart_n if_o a_o break_a heart_a father_n have_v have_v a_o proud_a heart_n and_o have_v be_v weary_v with_o it_o he_o labour_v to_o kill_v all_o the_o brood_n of_o those_o curse_a distemper_n in_o his_o child_n last_o he_o labour_v to_o cross_v and_o undermine_v all_o those_o occasion_n and_o mean_n that_o have_v give_v any_o succour_n to_o his_o corruption_n of_o heart_n the_o soul_n have_v such_o a_o secret_a grudge_n against_o the_o thrive_a of_o sin_n sin_v that_o it_o loathe_v all_o occasion_n that_o may_v maintain_v his_o sin_n as_o the_o drunkard_n and_o adulterer_n find_v by_o woeful_a experience_n that_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n of_o all_o other_o and_o therefore_o for_o the_o preservation_n of_o itself_o it_o will_v hate_v that_o sin_n which_o misery_n and_o what_o be_v the_o mint_n out_o of_o which_o all_o these_o plague_n and_o judgement_n come_v be_v it_o not_o my_o sin_n it_o be_v not_o poverty_n it_o be_v not_o sickness_n nor_o disgrace_n that_o pinch_v i_o but_o my_o sin_n first_o cause_v all_o these_o it_o be_v the_o poison_n of_o sin_n in_o poverty_n and_o the_o poison_n of_o sin_n in_o shame_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o all_o these_o by_o reason_n of_o my_o sin_n these_o evil_n be_v not_o evil_a to_o i_o but_o that_o my_o sin_n make_v they_o so_o have_v i_o a_o heart_n to_o fear_n god_n and_o to_o love_v he_o and_o depend_v upon_o he_o in_o poverty_n god_n will_v enrich_v i_o and_o in_o shame_n he_o will_v honour_v i_o and_o in_o misery_n he_o will_v comfort_v i_o it_o be_v not_o poverty_n nor_o
