some_o word_n of_o god_n which_o thou_o have_v place_v thy_o confidence_n in_o and_o upon_o which_o thou_o have_v be_v reform_v and_o since_o that_o day_n to_o this_o god_n have_v turn_v thy_o heart_n and_o way_n to_o another_o course_n and_o give_v thou_o to_o live_v in_o his_o sight_n it_o be_v true_a it_o may_v be_v many_o a_o good_a soul_n can_v ready_o tell_v you_o this_o note_v this_o what_o promise_n do_v first_o bring_v they_o on_o to_o god_n but_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o always_o tell_v yet_o a_o word_n of_o promise_n it_o be_v and_o ordinary_o a_o word_n of_o promise_n which_o the_o word_n preach_v do_v apply_v to_o thy_o soul_n and_o cause_v thy_o heart_n to_o reach_v forth_o and_o to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o it_o but_o though_o thou_o be_v not_o always_o able_a to_o reckon_v up_o the_o first_o promise_n yet_o this_o i_o say_v and_o mark_v it_o there_o be_v no_o christian_a soul_n but_o have_v some_o promise_n of_o god_n on_o which_o his_o heart_n be_v stay_v upon_o and_o by_o which_o his_o life_n be_v nourish_v which_o argue_v it_o be_v breed_v of_o those_o promise_n of_o which_o it_o be_v now_o feed_v though_o a_o man_n be_v not_o always_o able_a to_o tell_v what_o promise_v it_o be_v sometime_o a_o word_n of_o reproof_n or_o of_o counsel_n may_v sink_v deep_a into_o a_o man_n when_o god_n set_v it_o well_o on_o and_o may_v make_v a_o deep_a impression_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n and_o may_v so_o turn_v about_o the_o course_n of_o their_o life_n as_o that_o thereby_o they_o may_v reform_v all_o common_a and_o outward_a and_o know_v soul_n sin_n which_o before_o be_v ever_o cause_n and_o matter_n of_o reproof_n but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o safe_a a_o work_n of_o christ_n not_o such_o a_o strong_a evidence_n of_o our_o spiritual_a life_n when_o such_o a_o word_n of_o reproof_n or_o counsel_n have_v set_v we_o in_o such_o a_o course_n and_o we_o have_v thereupon_o refrain_v game_a and_o break_v of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o vain_a fashion_n this_o be_v well_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o safe_a a_o sign_n of_o our_o new_a birth_n for_o this_o may_v befall_v even_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o may_v be_v so_o convince_v by_o a_o word_n of_o grace_n and_o wise_a counsel_n as_o may_v strong_o turn_v the_o stream_n of_o his_o course_n another_o way_n and_o yet_o be_v without_o any_o life_n and_o power_n of_o godliness_n only_o the_o word_n of_o promise_n be_v able_a to_o work_v grace_n and_o life_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o point_n be_v this_o point_n ground_n of_o the_o point_n we_o can_v have_v a_o spirit_n of_o life_n wrought_v in_o we_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n nor_o by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n gal._n 3.5_o he_o that_o minister_v to_o you_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o work_v miracle_n do_v he_o it_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v do_v you_o ever_o receive_v the_o grace_n of_o christ_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o by_o sanctification_n life_n of_o sanctification_n he_o that_o have_v the_o son_n have_v life_n not_o only_o in_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o he_o have_v likewise_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o be_v the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n a_o frame_n of_o grace_n wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o life_n of_o holiness_n now_o because_o sanctification_n be_v find_v partly_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o partly_o in_o the_o life_n let_v i_o now_o show_v you_o some_o such_o effect_n of_o spiritual_a life_n as_o be_v find_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a and_o breathe_v forth_o themselves_o in_o his_o life_n by_o those_o habit_n and_o gift_n which_o be_v principal_o within_o and_o the_o sum_n of_o what_o i_o shall_v now_o say_v be_v thus_o much_o there_o be_v certain_a variety_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o themselves_o so_o different_a and_o opposite_a as_o that_o in_o nature_n they_o be_v seldom_o compatible_a to_o one_o person_n at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n or_o least_o of_o all_o to_o be_v find_v in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o business_n and_o yet_o be_v find_v where_o ever_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n where_o you_o have_v the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n in_o a_o christian_a you_o shall_v find_v variety_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o some_o of_o they_o of_o such_o diversity_n and_o opposition_n one_o to_o another_o that_o in_o nature_n the_o like_a temper_n be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o one_o person_n at_o the_o same_o time_n and_o in_o the_o same_o business_n they_o be_v certain_a kind_n of_o conjugation_n or_o companion_n of_o grace_n so_o fit_v and_o join_v together_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n as_o that_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o compact_v such_o sanctify_a affection_n unto_o such_o use_n upon_o any_o occasion_n much_o less_o able_a to_o bring_v they_o forth_o upon_o any_o occasion_n they_o be_v so_o different_a in_o themselves_o to_o name_v some_o of_o they_o in_o particular_a first_o if_o you_o look_v at_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n as_o it_o work_v in_o the_o heart_n once_o joy_n and_o grief_n in_o the_o soul_n sanctify_v at_o once_o and_o exercise_n itself_o in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o the_o soul_n discern_v any_o life_n of_o grace_n in_o its_o heart_n that_o sin_n be_v now_o pardon_v and_o god_n be_v please_v to_o frame_v it_o anew_o and_o to_o give_v it_o a_o new_a life_n at_o that_o time_n the_o heart_n be_v take_v up_o with_o these_o two_o contrary_a effect_n it_o be_v both_o enlarge_v with_o no_o small_a measure_n of_o joy_n that_o ever_o god_n shall_v redeem_v he_o from_o such_o a_o desperate_a condition_n as_o his_o soul_n lie_v in_o and_o yet_o withal_o full_a of_o grief_n of_o heart_n that_o ever_o he_o shall_v have_v so_o much_o displease_v that_o god_n that_o have_v do_v so_o much_o for_o he_o and_o so_o plain_a as_o that_o you_o themselves_o redeem_v by_o the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o they_o do_v rejoice_v to_o see_v themselves_o set_v at_o liberty_n from_o the_o captivity_n they_o do_v at_o the_o same_o time_n as_o sad_o grieve_v and_o weep_v to_o consider_v the_o unkindness_n they_o have_v put_v upon_o god_n and_o their_o unworthiness_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n from_o he_o as_o you_o may_v read_v jer._n 50._o 4_o 5._o speak_v of_o the_o same_o people_n and_o of_o the_o same_o time_n their_o return_n from_o the_o captivity_n and_o he_o tell_v you_o they_o shall_v come_v go_v and_o weep_v shall_v they_o go_v and_o seek_v the_o lord_n god_n and_o ask_v the_o way_n to_o zion_n with_o their_o face_n thitherward_o if_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v of_o it_o he_o say_v they_o be_v out_o of_o and_o beyond_o themselves_o for_o joy_n as_o in_o a_o comfortable_a dream_n the_o news_n seem_v to_o be_v too_o good_a to_o be_v true_a and_o they_o rejoice_v with_o exceed_v great_a joy_n and_o if_o the_o prophet_n house_n and_o if_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v you_o put_v it_o upon_o any_o body_n rather_o than_o upon_o yourself_o you_o may_v be_v a_o live_a christian_n but_o your_o heart_n be_v in_o a_o dead_a frame_n at_o that_o time_n and_o if_o it_o be_v always_o so_o with_o you_o you_o never_o do_v true_o live_v but_o if_o you_o find_v your_o spirit_n at_o least_o your_o heart_n come_v on_o most_o willing_o to_o christian_a duty_n that_o you_o perform_v they_o like_o freewill_n offering_n not_o free_a so_o as_o without_o warrant_n from_o god_n word_n but_o free_a in_o respect_n of_o grace_n they_o be_v nothing_o to_o he_o then_o sure_o you_o have_v christ_n but_o how_o much_o will_v this_o discord_n from_o the_o fellowship_n of_o christ_n the_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o man_n who_o when_o they_o see_v the_o costlinesse_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n they_o will_v neither_o seek_v after_o christ_n nor_o his_o benefit_n but_o as_o for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o pass_v all_o understanding_n so_o it_o pass_v their_o desire_n and_o for_o peace_n of_o conscience_n they_o hope_v they_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n or_o if_o not_o they_o do_v not_o search_v to_o know_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o subdue_a of_o lust_n they_o have_v a_o good_a hope_n and_o believe_v as_o well_o as_o the_o best_a and_o for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n they_o hope_v if_o god_n grant_v they_o mercy_n they_o shall_v come_v to_o heaven_n at_o the_o last_o these_o man_n be_v far_o from_o have_v the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o life_n in_o he_o they_o be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o seek_v the_o son_n as_o that_o they_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o seek_v those_o mercy_n and_o benefit_n which_o in_o christ_n be_v convey_v to_o their_o soul_n they_o benefit_n of_o christ_n more_o than_o after_o christ_n himself_o all_o this_o while_o you_o want_v that_o sincerity_n upon_o which_o christ_n will_v give_v we_o a_o comfortable_a meeting_n and_o speak_v peace_n to_o our_o soul_n we_o be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o that_o condition_n as_o in_o which_o he_o will_v say_v my_o well-beloved_n thou_o be_v all_o fair_a and_o there_o be_v no_o spot_n in_o thou_o he_o yet_o see_v not_o a_o true_a conjugal_a affection_n in_o we_o towards_o he_o so_o as_o that_o though_o we_o shall_v never_o find_v grace_n nor_o glory_n by_o he_o yet_o he_o be_v the_o chief_a desire_n of_o our_o soul_n suppose_v a_o woman_n shall_v see_v a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o desire_n after_o she_o but_o he_o chief_o aim_v at_o her_o estate_n to_o provide_v for_o himself_o and_o look_v no_o further_o wonder_v not_o if_o she_o shall_v say_v to_o he_o you_o seek_v not_o i_o but_o i_o she_o may_v well_o rid_v her_o hand_n of_o he_o in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o true_o so_o be_v the_o case_n here_o between_o we_o &_o the_o lord_n jesus_n so_o long_o as_o he_o find_v that_o we_o come_v to_o he_o and_o seek_v and_o pray_v and_o wrestle_v and_o what_o will_v we_o have_v oh_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o power_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v but_o as_o other_o christian_n be_v that_o we_o can_v pray_v and_o believe_v as_o they_o do_v and_o find_v such_o comfort_n as_o they_o have_v and_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v chief_o set_v upon_o now_o all_o this_o while_n that_o we_o come_v thus_o to_o christ_n we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o christ_n be_v to_o blame_v if_o he_o tarry_v a_o little_a long_o than_o we_o expect_v for_o we_o may_v seek_v he_o and_o not_o find_v he_o because_o we_o seek_v not_o so_o much_o he_o as_o his_o benefit_n and_o the_o rich_a treasure_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n and_o peace_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o in_o he_o without_o measure_n the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n do_v not_o love_v their_o soul_n nor_o the_o lord_n jesus_n so_o well_o as_o to_o love_v he_o for_o his_o grace_n and_o goodness_n sake_n but_o yet_o among_o better_a man_n there_o be_v a_o world_n of_o self_n love_n many_o a_o man_n will_v have_v his_o sin_n pardon_v because_o he_o will_v have_v his_o conscience_n at_o quiet_a we_o may_v thank_v ourselves_o for_o such_o affection_n as_o these_o not_o but_o that_o such_o affection_n may_v spring_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o man_n by_o nature_n never_o dream_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v but_o yet_o though_o such_o affection_n may_v spring_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n yet_o you_o shall_v ever_o find_v such_o soul_n to_o detain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n and_o out_o of_o self_n love_n use_v they_o all_o to_o their_o own_o end_n and_o look_v not_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o and_o by_o they_o nor_o that_o his_o will_v be_v do_v but_o oh_o that_o the_o soul_n may_v have_v peace_n and_o that_o sin_n may_v be_v pardon_v and_o there_o it_o rest_v when_o our_o desire_n be_v chief_o set_v upon_o spiritual_a gift_n if_o we_o lose_v much_o comfort_n and_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n that_o else_o we_o may_v have_v have_v we_o must_v not_o marvel_n at_o it_o for_o our_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o chief_o upon_o christ_n but_o upon_o the_o thing_n of_o christ_n our_o desire_n be_v not_o after_o the_o person_n but_o after_o the_o good_n and_o benefit_n of_o christ_n observe_v the_o apostle_n expression_n rom._n 8.32_o he_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n he_o do_v not_o say_v he_o that_o have_v give_v we_o peace_n and_o pardon_n of_o sin_n will_v not_o he_o give_v all_o other_o thing_n also_o or_o will_v not_o he_o give_v we_o christ_n he_o reason_v not_o from_o christ_n benefit_n to_o christ_n but_o thus_o he_o reason_n he_o that_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n will_v with_o his_o son_n and_o after_o his_o son_n give_v we_o all_o other_o thing_n at_o the_o second_o hand_n come_v in_o all_o these_o benefit_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o strength_n of_o grace_n and_o power_n against_o our_o lust_n etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n come_v in_o as_o attendant_n upon_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o if_o god_n give_v we_o first_o to_o look_v at_o christ_n that_o in_o he_o we_o have_v life_n of_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n and_o consolation_n eternal_a glory_n peace_n and_o grace_n and_o all_o then_o we_o have_v he_o and_o life_n in_o he_o else_o we_o may_v have_v the_o outward_a comfort_n but_o stand_v long_o enough_o at_o christ_n bedchamber_n door_n before_o he_o let_v we_o in_o let_v it_o therefore_o be_v a_o word_n of_o direction_n and_o exhortation_n to_o every_o soul_n that_o desire_v to_o have_v that_o affection_n to_o duty_n but_o out_o of_o their_o place_n and_o calling_n or_o in_o their_o call_n they_o do_v such_o duty_n but_o rather_o out_o of_o their_o own_o strength_n then_o from_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o out_o of_o a_o conscionable_a respect_n to_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n or_o if_o it_o be_v from_o outward_a principle_n and_o to_o wrong_v end_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n not_o seek_v after_o nor_o tend_v to_o the_o build_n up_o themselves_o nor_o other_o in_o grace_n all_o these_o be_v such_o as_o man_n may_v be_v carry_v to_o do_v from_o outward_a respect_n they_o may_v do_v something_o that_o one_o will_v think_v will_v argue_v life_n but_o all_o the_o duty_n they_o do_v by_o their_o own_o strength_n be_v like_o a_o spider_n that_o weave_v a_o of_o a_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o inability_n to_o reach_v any_o duty_n in_o your_o call_n much_o less_o of_o god_n service_n and_o in_o they_o all_o you_o observe_v every_o commandment_n of_o god_n of_o a_o coath_a come_v upon_o a_o christian_n that_o so_o benumb_v his_o spirit_n that_o he_o perform_v no_o duty_n at_o all_o but_o if_o he_o may_v have_v his_o own_o mind_n he_o will_v not_o pray_v at_o all_o nor_o receive_v sacrament_n be_v not_o this_o sometime_o the_o case_n of_o christian_a and_o will_v you_o say_v that_o such_o a_o one_o be_v a_o dead_a soul_n because_o he_o be_v altogether_o listlesse_a and_o deadhearted_n to_o move_v to_o any_o spiritual_a duty_n answ_n it_o be_v true_a there_o may_v fall_v such_o a_o deadness_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o christian_a man_n prayer_n the_o prayer_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n it_o always_o but_o lip-labour_n and_o according_o lust_n labour_n the_o word_n vanish_v away_o in_o the_o air_n but_o there_o be_v ever_o more_o or_o less_o some_o kind_n of_o warmth-in_a the_o prayer_n of_o god_n servant_n according_a to_o what_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 8.26_o even_o then_o when_o we_o know_v not_o what_o to_o pray_v for_o nor_o how_o to_o pray_v as_o we_o ought_v then_o the_o spirit_n help_v our_o infirmity_n that_o when_o we_o sometime_o can_v bring_v out_o a_o word_n to_o god_n the_o heart_n be_v full_a sometime_o those_o that_o take_v no_o pleasure_n in_o they_o but_o if_o they_o speak_v of_o any_o of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o speak_v with_o some_o reverence_n and_o desire_v after_o they_o and_o forth_o with_o a_o grace_n david_n in_o his_o worst_a come_v not_o off_o with_o full_a power_n of_o wickedness_n which_o else_o his_o corrupt_a heart_n will_v willing_o break_v forth_o into_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n that_o move_v slow_o in_o such_o case_n as_o these_o be_v so_o that_o still_o the_o case_n stand_v clear_a how_o much_o life_n so_o much_o warmth_n and_o that_o warmth_n will_v express_v itself_o if_o any_o life_n be_v there_o at_o all_o so_o that_o take_v a_o survey_n of_o your_o own_o estate_n by_o this_o mean_v you_o will_v know_v whether_o you_o have_v christ_n or_o no_o whether_o you_o have_v life_n or_o no_o if_o you_o have_v the_o life_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v some_o spiritual_a warmth_n in_o thy_o soul_n some_o heat_n in_o thy_o soul_n do_v but_o consider_v then_o the_o knowledge_n that_o be_v within_o thou_o be_v thy_o knowledge_n such_o
