phrase_n under_o some_o different_a consideration_n be_v on_o our_o side_n whole_o owe_v to_o our_o true_a repentance_n and_o obedience_n and_o it_o be_v all_o lose_v and_o forfeit_v by_o our_o impenitency_n and_o disobedience_n which_o on_o the_o contrary_n make_v we_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n the_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o heir_n of_o damnation_n put_v we_o into_o the_o worst_a spiritual_a state_n of_o reprobation_n obduration_n and_o excecation_n according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o impenitence_n and_o into_o that_o of_o condemnation_n itself_o which_o temptation_n by_o which_o man_n be_v general_o delude_v into_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n and_o expose_v the_o false_a reason_n and_o sophistry_n which_o impose_v upon_o they_o and_o persuade_v they_o to_o commit_v it_o i_o shall_v now_o offer_v the_o many_o motive_n and_o encouragement_n and_o great_a argument_n to_o make_v man_n leave_v their_o sin_n and_o persuade_v they_o to_o and_o proper_a to_o christianity_n of_o which_o this_o be_v the_o great_a duty_n sect_n ii_o motive_n to_o repentance_n from_o reason_n the_o motive_n to_o repentance_n from_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n such_o as_o will_v persuade_v a_o wise_a heathen_a or_o any_o man_n of_o sense_n and_o understanding_n to_o repent_v after_o he_o have_v be_v foolish_a and_o wicked_a these_o must_v be_v take_v from_o the_o manifold_a evil_n and_o mischief_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o vice_n which_o though_o they_o invite_v he_o at_o first_o with_o the_o appear_a charm_n of_o wolf_n come_v often_o to_o the_o door_n where_o the_o swine_n and_o the_o goat_n have_v be_v use_v to_o dwell_v though_o virtue_n may_v not_o always_o bring_v abundance_n neither_o be_v it_o their_o proper_a object_n whereas_o a_o neglect_n of_o those_o beget_v a_o carelessness_n stupidity_n and_o senslesness_n of_o all_o those_o thing_n and_o sink_v man_n into_o a_o mere_a sensual_a and_o animal_n and_o worldly_a and_o brutal_a life_n nothing_o be_v therefore_o so_o proper_a to_o bring_v we_o to_o these_o spiritual_a desire_n and_o to_o make_v those_o always_o prevail_v over_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o devotion_n and_o piety_n which_o raise_v the_o mind_n to_o thing_n above_o the_o body_n and_o above_o this_o world_n and_o take_v off_o and_o abstract_n the_o soul_n from_o sensual_a and_o carnal_a enjoyment_n and_o make_v it_o live_v up_o as_o near_o as_o it_o can_v to_o that_o life_n it_o shall_v have_v in_o heaven_n when_o it_o shall_v be_v all_o as_o a_o swine_n from_o wallow_v in_o the_o mire_n to_o be_v place_v on_o a_o throne_n as_o god_n will_v not_o suffer_v any_o such_o impurity_n to_o appraoch_n that_o holy_a place_n nor_o any_o unclean_a thing_n to_o enter_v into_o it_o so_o it_o can_v not_o be_v suppose_v capable_a of_o enjoy_v the_o proper_a and_o spiritual_a happiness_n of_o it_o till_o it_o be_v very_o much_o change_v and_o alter_v and_o bring_v off_o from_o the_o love_n of_o vice_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o goodness_n and_o so_o fit_v to_o partake_v both_o of_o the_o favour_n of_o one_o and_o the_o good_a and_o happiness_n of_o the_o other_o it_o be_v certain_a none_o but_o good_a man_n shall_v enter_v into_o heaven_n and_o partake_v of_o the_o joy_n and_o glory_n above_o which_o god_n have_v lay_v up_o for_o those_o that_o love_v he_o all_o other_o be_v both_o unworthy_a and_o uncapable_a to_o enjoy_v they_o and_o shall_v never_o taste_v of_o any_o part_n of_o they_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v miserable_a it_o must_v necessary_o be_v now_o holiness_n and_o virtue_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n by_o which_o we_o can_v be_v like_o god_n and_o become_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n communion_n and_o this_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o prudential_n method_n and_o a_o external_n discipline_n of_o the_o church_n yet_o be_v excellent_o fit_v for_o the_o reclaim_n and_o reform_v great_a and_o open_a offender_n by_o thus_o shame_v they_o out_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o keep_v the_o rod_n over_o they_o and_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o the_o church_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o key_n till_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v admit_v and_o receive_v in_o again_o upon_o the_o probable_a sign_n of_o a_o true_a repentance_n and_o this_o our_o church_n have_v good_a reason_n to_o wish_v for_o again_o and_o aught_o to_o restore_v it_o do_v not_o the_o state_n and_o circumstance_n we_o be_v in_o unavoidable_o hinder_v it_o but_o it_o be_v utter_o impracticable_a under_o great_a schism_n and_o division_n from_o the_o church_n and_o great_a looseness_n and_o contempt_n of_o religion_n which_o make_v it_o impossible_a for_o the_o church_n to_o exercise_v this_o discipline_n which_o be_v otherwise_o its_o duty_n but_o this_o be_v at_o most_o but_o a_o useful_a discipline_n not_o a_o necessary_a or_o essential_a part_n of_o repentance_n to_o go_v through_o those_o penitential_a course_n of_o humiliation_n and_o mortification_n which_o the_o ancient_a penitent_n do_v all_o that_o be_v strict_o necessary_a and_o all_o that_o the_o scripture_n command_v as_o a_o any_o inward_a principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n in_o their_o soul_n or_o the_o root_n of_o the_o matter_n in_o they_o as_o some_o love_n to_o speak_v but_o by_o such_o vital_a operation_n and_o visible_a effect_n of_o it_o in_o their_o life_n as_o we_o can_v know_v the_o tree_n be_v alive_a at_o the_o root_n but_o by_o the_o sprout_n and_o branch_n that_o shoot_v from_o it_o and_o show_v it_o to_o be_v so_o but_o we_o conclude_v it_o to_o be_v dead_a without_o those_o in_o their_o proper_a time_n and_o so_o we_o may_v ourselves_o in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n without_o the_o fruit_n of_o repentance_n and_o holiness_n in_o our_o life_n a_o christian_n can_v know_v he_o have_v faith_n but_o by_o his_o work_n nor_o be_v sure_a of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n but_o by_o the_o efficacy_n of_o it_o in_o restrain_v he_o from_o sin_n and_o the_o visible_a effect_n of_o it_o in_o a_o holy_a conversation_n we_o can_v so_o perfect_o feel_v and_o discern_v this_o secret_a and_o inward_a principle_n in_o ourselves_o so_o as_o to_o be_v any_o way_n assure_v of_o it_o unless_o the_o force_n and_o power_n of_o it_o appear_v in_o our_o action_n and_o in_o reform_v and_o better_v our_o life_n and_o to_o judge_v of_o our_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n any_o otherwise_o from_o any_o voice_n or_o testimony_n within_o be_v very_o precarious_a and_o ungrounded_a and_o very_a liable_a to_o error_n and_o delusion_n for_o the_o spirit_n bear_v witness_n to_o none_o but_o those_o who_o conscience_n at_o the_o same_o time_n bear_v witness_n that_o they_o be_v the_o child_n further_a there_o be_v other_o imperfect_a sign_n not_o quite_o so_o deceitful_a and_o enthusiastic_a as_o these_o by_o which_o many_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o good_a state_n though_o they_o be_v not_o bring_v off_o actual_o from_o every_o sin_n as_o that_o they_o be_v trouble_v and_o concern_v at_o their_o sin_n and_o commit_v they_o with_o great_a reluctancy_n and_o uneasiness_n of_o mind_n so_o that_o they_o do_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o will_v not_o and_o that_o they_o often_o wish_v they_o be_v better_a and_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o leave_v their_o sin_n and_o some_o purpose_n to_o do_v so_o though_o their_o sin_n be_v so_o strong_a and_o powerful_a that_o they_o still_o prevail_v upon_o they_o and_o they_o can_v whole_o get_v rid_v of_o they_o this_o they_o take_v to_o be_v good_a sign_n of_o grace_n that_o they_o have_v some_o good_a motion_n and_o stir_n in_o their_o soul_n some_o desire_n and_o wish_n and_o this_o desire_n of_o grace_n they_o take_v to_o be_v grace_n itself_o and_o though_o they_o do_v not_o the_o good_a they_o will_v yet_o that_o they_o have_v some_o mind_n and_o inclination_n to_o do_v it_o now_o all_o this_o may_v be_v in_o such_o as_o be_v true_o sinner_n and_o unregenerate_a person_n that_o be_v still_o in_o a_o impenitent_a state_n and_o under_o the_o power_n and_o dominion_n of_o their_o sin_n but_o be_v not_o quite_o senseless_a and_o stupefy_v nor_o be_v come_v to_o what_o the_o apostle_n call_v a_o sear_a conscience_n without_o sense_n of_o their_o sin_n nor_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n void_a of_o all_o judgement_n about_o they_o which_o be_v the_o utmost_a degree_n of_o profligate_v wickedness_n till_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o those_o their_o sin_n will_v be_v uneasy_a to_o they_o and_o fill_v they_o with_o mind_n but_o if_o they_o will_v still_o sin_v notwithstanding_o this_o and_o will_v not_o hearken_v to_o the_o secret_a call_v or_o loud_a clamour_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n but_o will_v still_o follow_v their_o lust_n and_o vice_n and_o be_v draw_v away_o by_o the_o strong_a and_o allure_a temptation_n of_o they_o all_o this_o regret_n and_o trouble_v which_o they_o sometime_o bring_v upon_o they_o be_v only_o a_o self-conviction_n and_o self-condemnation_n and_o be_v so_o far_o from_o give_v any_o abatement_n to_o their_o sin_n that_o it_o add_v this_o high_a aggravation_n to_o they_o that_o they_o be_v commit_v all_o the_o while_n against_o conscience_n and_o against_o the_o inward_a sense_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n and_o though_o now_o and_o then_o in_o a_o good_a mood_n and_o a_o melancholy_a fit_n when_o they_o be_v thus_o trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n they_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o leave_v they_o and_o come_v to_o some_o faint_a wish_n purpose_n and_o who_o give_v way_n to_o any_o one_o plain_a and_o great_a one_o if_o he_o be_v assault_v by_o the_o like_a temptation_n in_o any_o other_o place_n he_o will_v yield_v to_o it_o and_o comply_v with_o sincerity_n because_o the_o best_a man_n can_v attain_v to_o the_o one_o and_o he_o must_v be_v a_o very_a bad_a one_o who_o have_v not_o the_o other_o but_o there_o be_v a_o perfection_n of_o part_n and_o degree_n we_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o every_o virtue_n in_o order_n to_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o goodness_n but_o we_o be_v to_o have_v such_o a_o perfection_n of_o part_n as_o to_o perform_v every_o duty_n and_o every_o virtue_n require_v of_o we_o and_o to_o be_v without_o every_o wilful_a sin_n contrary_a to_o the_o divine_a law_n for_o less_o than_o this_o will_v not_o amount_v to_o true_a sincerity_n that_o shall_v commend_v we_o to_o god_n and_o approve_v we_o to_o he_o who_o know_v our_o heart_n for_o whilst_o he_o see_v there_o any_o one_o imaginable_a can_v he_o love_v his_o prince_n or_o the_o government_n where_o he_o live_v who_o endeavour_n in_o any_o thing_n to_o subvert_v and_o destroy_v that_o authority_n by_o a_o open_a stand_v out_o and_o break_v their_o law_n there_o may_v be_v indeed_o a_o personal_a love_n to_o a_o earthly_a prince_n distinct_a from_o obedience_n to_o his_o law_n and_o so_o some_o will_v have_v to_o god_n and_o christ_n for_o he_o may_v be_v capable_a of_o receive_v other_o pledge_n and_o testimony_n of_o it_o and_o may_v be_v many_o other_o way_n oblige_v by_o we_o because_o he_o may_v have_v a_o distinct_a interest_n or_o inclination_n different_a from_o his_o law_n but_o this_o can_v be_v in_o god_n who_o law_n be_v always_o agreeable_a to_o his_o nature_n and_o the_o result_n of_o his_o paltry_a and_o a_o vile_a lust_n whilst_o we_o thus_o indulge_v any_o darling_n sin_n and_o secret_a wickedness_n in_o our_o heart_n as_o god_n can_v love_v we_o so_o neither_o can_v we_o sincere_o love_v he_o but_o whatever_o show_v and_o pretence_n of_o kindness_n and_o respect_n we_o may_v show_v to_o he_o otherways_o whatever_o courtship_n and_o honour_n we_o may_v give_v to_o he_o by_o the_o ceremony_n of_o worship_n and_o the_o external_n right_n and_o office_n of_o religion_n yet_o he_o will_v account_v we_o only_o false_a and_o treacherous_a and_o hypocritical_a wretch_n and_o not_o accept_v of_o any_o thing_n else_o we_o offer_v to_o he_o for_o 8_o allow_v ourselves_o in_o one_o such_o darling_n sin_n or_o belove_a lust_n spoil_v all_o our_o religious_a duty_n and_o make_v
