from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n so_o they_o bring_v not_o forth_o the_o same_o but_o contrary_a effect_n and_o they_o be_v three_o fold_n first_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o draw_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n from_o god_n because_o they_o see_v he_o as_o a_o judge_n they_o can_v love_v he_o as_o a_o father_n he_o take_v god_n to_o be_v his_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o fly_v from_o he_o because_o he_o expect_v no_o good_a from_o he_o this_o we_o see_v as_o before_o in_o adam_n cain_n and_o judas_n but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n cleave_v fast_o unto_o christ_n to_o stick_v fast_o unto_o grace_n it_o whet_v the_o affection_n to_o love_n christ_n to_o prize_n christ_n more_o it_o work_v a_o willing_a readiness_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o obey_v it_o put_v by_o that_o which_o will_v make_v he_o fly_v from_o christ_n second_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o hurt_v the_o body_n it_o breed_v disease_n it_o waste_v and_o consume_v the_o entrail_n breed_v and_o bring_v consumption_n of_o the_o body_n it_o dull_v and_o make_v dead_a the_o soul_n it_o take_v away_o the_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n it_o make_v a_o man_n careless_a to_o good_a it_o daule_v and_o make_v a_o man_n unwilling_a unto_o any_o good_a but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o body_n it_o quicken_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n unto_o good_a it_o put_v a_o new_a life_n into_o it_o it_o work_v a_o readiness_n in_o the_o will_n and_o love_n in_o the_o affection_n to_o christ_n grace_n and_o holiness_n three_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n of_o a_o hot_a and_o a_o fiery_a spirit_n it_o stir_v he_o up_o after_o evil_a to_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_v his_o neighbour_n it_o fill_v he_o full_a of_o hatred_n revenge_n and_o envy_v but_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o breed_v another_o kind_n of_o spirit_n in_o he_o it_o make_v he_o of_o a_o meek_a and_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n worldly_a sorrow_n will_v not_o put_v up_o reproach_n disgrace_n and_o wrong_v but_o this_o will_v put_v up_o all_o injury_n and_o wrong_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o he_o meet_v withal_o for_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v quest._n whether_o my_o sorrow_n be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o no._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o by_o the_o ingredient_n answ._n  _fw-fr 2._o by_o the_o continuance_n  _fw-fr 3_o by_o the_o event_n first_o i_o say_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o ingredient_n for_o first_o they_o have_v not_o only_o the_o sense_n of_o 1._o punishment_n which_o be_v common_a unto_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n for_o i_o say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n to_o apprehend_v punishment_n yet_o it_o be_v likewise_o require_v of_o godly_a sorrow_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o punishment_n but_o there_o be_v another_o light_n put_v into_o he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o uncleanness_n of_o sin_n he_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o own_o dye_n not_o only_a sin_n to_o be_v sin_n but_o sin_n to_o be_v vile_a and_o hereupon_o he_o will_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o mercy_n unless_o he_o may_v have_v grace_n but_o the_o other_o care_v not_o if_o he_o may_v be_v free_a from_o punishment_n whether_o he_o have_v strength_n against_o corruption_n or_o no._n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o continuance_n 2._o of_o it_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v constant_a but_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v but_o a_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o change_v it_o last_v not_o though_o for_o the_o present_a it_o may_v be_v violent_a and_o strong_a and_o work_n much_o outward_o yet_o it_o come_v but_o by_o fit_n and_o continue_v not_o like_o a_o land_n flood_n which_o violent_o for_o the_o present_a overflows_a the_o bank_n but_o it_o will_v away_o again_o it_o be_v not_o always_o thus_o but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v like_o a_o spring_n that_o still_o keep_v his_o run_n it_o be_v not_o dry_v up_o but_o run_v still_o it_o be_v not_o so_o violent_a as_o the_o other_o but_o it_o be_v more_o sure_a you_o shall_v have_v it_o still_o run_v both_o winter_n and_o summer_n wet_a and_o dry_a in_o hot_a and_o cold_a early_o and_o late_o so_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o same_o in_o a_o regenerate_a man_n still_o take_v he_o when_o you_o will_v he_o be_v still_o sorrow_v for_o sin_n this_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o stand_v like_o the_o centre_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o remove_v not_o but_o still_o remain_v three_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o success_n and_o 3._o event_n of_o it_o it_o will_v turn_v the_o heart_n unto_o christ_n it_o will_v make_v the_o heart_n stand_v more_o firm_a in_o grace_n it_o will_v turn_v the_o whole_a frame_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o god_n like_o the_o loadstone_n that_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o have_v touch_v the_o iron_n or_o as_o the_o needle_n touch_v will_v not_o stand_v till_o it_o touch_v the_o north-pole_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n when_o a_o man_n have_v receive_v but_o a_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o will_v never_o rest_v till_o he_o have_v touch_v christ_n till_o he_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o he_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v he_o till_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n till_o christ_n be_v his_o nothing_o will_v make_v he_o to_o remove_v that_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o he_o have_v in_o christ_n all_o thing_n shall_v go_v for_o christ._n but_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n have_v another_o success_n namely_o to_o fly_v fast_o away_o from_o god_n as_o i_o have_v show_v in_o judas_n and_o caine._n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o question_n the_o six_o question_n
themselves_o from_o all_o such_o work_n on_o that_o day_n which_o may_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o keep_v they_o from_o humiliation_n for_o the_o object_n be_v hold_v long_o on_o the_o faculty_n it_o will_v at_o last_o humble_v we_o for_o our_o nature_n be_v like_o the_o fire_n if_o matter_n be_v not_o upply_v unto_o it_o it_o will_v go_v out_o so_o if_o we_o keep_v not_o a_o sense_n of_o sin_n humiliation_n and_o sorrow_n in_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v die_v therefore_o you_o must_v take_v pain_n with_o your_o heart_n and_o set_v sin_n still_o before_o you_o david_n sin_n be_v ever_o before_o he_o and_o paul_n be_v ever_o humble_a in_o remember_v his_o sin_n therefore_o let_v this_o humiliation_n and_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v in_o you_o not_o like_o a_o land_n flood_n but_o like_o a_o spring_n this_o sorrow_n must_v still_o be_v run_v and_o spring_v and_o flow_v or_o else_o you_o will_v not_o remain_v humble_a i_o confess_v it_o be_v true_a that_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n to_o fear_n that_o be_v to_o sorrow_n hopeless_a but_o yet_o they_o have_v receive_v such_o a_o spirit_n that_o keep_v they_o still_o in_o awe_n that_o keep_v they_o still_o in_o this_o sorrow_n that_o keep_v they_o still_o in_o fear_n but_o yet_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o the_o sorrow_n and_o fear_n be_v take_v away_o because_o of_o a_o mixture_n of_o spiritual_a joy_n hope_v and_o confidence_n that_o they_o have_v wrought_v in_o they_o by_o the_o spirit_n the_o three_o be_v this_o you_o must_v proportion_v your_o rule_n humiliation_n according_a unto_o your_o sin_n if_o your_o sin_n have_v be_v great_a sin_n than_o your_o humiliation_n must_v be_v a_o deep_a humiliation_n this_o we_o see_v in_o manasses_n as_o his_o sin_n be_v exceed_v great_a so_o his_o humiliation_n be_v exceed_v great_a it_o wrought_v in_o he_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o humiliation_n and_o so_o peter_n sin_n be_v great_a and_o his_o humiliation_n be_v great_a for_o as_o the_o sin_n be_v great_a or_o lesser_a so_o the_o humiliation_n shall_v be_v great_a or_o lesser_a because_o the_o great_a the_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a shall_v be_v the_o judgement_n for_o they_o and_o therefore_o when_o you_o can_v pass_v over_o your_o sin_n as_o little_a sin_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v not_o humble_v for_o if_o you_o be_v you_o will_v then_o otherwise_o conceive_v of_o sin_n now_o where_o there_o be_v great_a sin_n forgive_v there_o will_v be_v great_a love_n as_o the_o woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n she_o love_v much_o that_o be_v she_o have_v many_o sin_n forgive_v she_o therefore_o she_o express_v much_o humiliation_n and_o love_n unto_o christ._n again_o let_v every_o man_n labour_n to_o feel_v their_o sin_n the_o more_o that_o they_o may_v love_v christ_n the_o more_o for_o that_o which_o the_o affection_n be_v most_o affect_v with_o that_o the_o understanding_n apprehend_v most_o and_o then_o the_o bent_n of_o the_o will_n follow_v and_o a_o man_n may_v if_o he_o will_v come_v unto_o this_o to_o see_v sin_n in_o himself_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o to_o humble_v he_o and_o make_v he_o to_o love_n god_n the_o more_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o see_v the_o prince_n in_o a_o multitude_n he_o will_v ever_o fasten_v his_o eye_n unto_o he_o so_o if_o a_o man_n will_v but_o fasten_v his_o understanding_n and_o mind_n upon_o sin_n he_o will_v at_o last_o see_v it_o to_o humble_v he_o and_o this_o do_v david_n in_o the_o sin_n of_o vriah_n he_o bring_v his_o sin_n unto_o this_o that_o it_o be_v ever_o before_o he_o no_o sin_n humble_v he_o as_o this_o do_v and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o mean_n of_o get_v humiliation_n be_v it_o so_o that_o humiliation_n be_v so_o necessary_a a_o condition_n on_o our_o part_n though_o as_o i_o say_v before_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o use_v necessary_a on_o god_n part_n neither_o a_o simple_a grace_n because_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n that_o follow_v it_o but_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v without_o exception_n of_o person_n or_o condition_n general_o unto_o all_o whosoever_o will_v let_v he_o come_v and_o take_v of_o the_o water_n of_o life_n free_o that_o be_v without_o any_o antecedent_n condition_n faith_n except_v yet_o as_o i_o say_v except_o we_o be_v humble_a we_o will_v not_o come_v in_o and_o receive_v christ_n and_o without_o christ_n there_o be_v no_o mean_n to_o be_v save_v and_o this_o we_o will_v not_o do_v till_o we_o be_v humble_a therefore_o it_o behoove_v you_o to_o examine_v yourselves_o whether_o you_o have_v this_o condition_n in_o you_o or_o no_o and_o now_o that_o i_o may_v make_v you_o willing_a to_o examine_v yourselves_o for_o except_v you_o be_v willing_a you_o will_v not_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n to_o move_v you_o hereunto_o the_o first_o motive_n be_v this_o consider_v that_o all_o that_o motive_n you_o do_v till_o you_o be_v humble_a be_v lose_v labour_n sacrifice_n 17._o of_o god_n be_v a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n all_o the_o prayer_n that_o a_o man_n make_v all_o the_o alm_n that_o he_o give_v all_o the_o holy_a duty_n that_o he_o do_v perform_v if_o they_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o a_o true_o humble_v soul_n they_o be_v unsavoury_a thing_n and_o that_o for_o these_o reason_n i._o reason_n the_o first_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o a_o break_a heart_n be_v the_o altar_n on_o which_o we_o must_v offer_v reason_n whatsoever_o we_o offer_v up_o to_o god_n they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o god_n accept_v of_o if_o they_o be_v not_o offer_v up_o upon_o this_o altar_n for_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o god_n be_v a_o break_a heart_n a_o true_o humble_v soul_n for_o as_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n the_o priest_n be_v to_o offer_v up_o sacrifice_n for_o the_o people_n in_o all_o humility_n so_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n on_o the_o cross_n with_o a_o break_a and_o a_o contrite_a spirit_n offer_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o all_o his_o child_n and_o make_v they_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n yet_o except_o the_o heart_n be_v humble_a he_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o a_o sinner_n ii_o reason_n the_o second_o reason_n be_v add_v in_o isaiah_n 66._o 2._o he_o will_v dwell_v in_o a_o break_a and_o a_o contrite_a spirit_n 2._o a_o humble_a soul_n be_v a_o fit_a habitation_n for_o the_o spirit_n now_o the_o spirit_n dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o sun_n in_o a_o house_n by_o communicate_v his_o grace_n unto_o the_o soul_n where_o he_o will_v come_v into_o and_o where_o the_o spirit_n will_v dwell_v there_o he_o do_v certain_o love_n and_o no_o soon_o do_v he_o dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o he_o will_v fill_v the_o heart_n full_a of_o holiness_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o will_v not_o come_v near_o a_o proud_a heart_n therefore_o if_o ever_o you_o will_v have_v the_o spirit_n to_o dwell_v in_o you_o you_o must_v get_v humble_a heart_n iii_o reason_n the_o three_o reason_n be_v because_o except_v he_o do_v not_o esteem_v he_o as_o a_o friend_n that_o be_v unstable_a because_o he_o know_v not_o how_o to_o depend_v upon_o he_o he_o stand_v now_o with_o he_o but_o whether_o he_o will_v when_o he_o shall_v need_v whether_o he_o will_v hold_v close_o to_o he_o or_o no_o he_o know_v not_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o unstable_a heart_n shall_v receive_v nothing_o of_o man_n make_v in_o religion_n it_o be_v nothing_o motive_n worth_a till_o a_o man_n be_v humble_a for_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n do_v not_o hold_v out_o in_o their_o profession_n but_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o they_o must_v be_v all_o strong_a as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n or_o a_o woman_n be_v not_o say_v to_o be_v perfect_o beautiful_a except_o they_o be_v beautiful_a in_o all_o part_n for_o beauty_n be_v require_v in_o all_o part_n so_o likewise_o a_o man_n be_v not_o thorough_o strong_a but_o imperfect_o except_o he_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o part_n strong_a in_o the_o understanding_n strong_a in_o the_o will_n strong_a in_o the_o affection_n etc._n etc._n second_o i_o call_v it_o a_o temperature_n or_o right_a frame_n of_o the_o mind_n because_o it_o anew_o and_o put_v it_o into_o a_o right_a temper_n again_o three_o i_o say_v whereby_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n 3._o because_o it_o set_v a_o good_a hue_n upon_o all_o our_o action_n for_o as_o varnish_v make_v all_o colour_n fresh_a so_o do_v the_o inward_a man_n it_o set_v a_o deep_a dye_n upon_o all_o our_o action_n a_o glass_n upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o here_o that_o be_v such_o that_o have_v once_o true_o love_v god_n and_o his_o kingdom_n but_o now_o be_v fall_v unto_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n that_o once_o be_v lively_a and_o quick_a to_o good_a but_o be_v now_o backward_o and_o cold_a my_o counsel_n to_o they_o shall_v be_v the_o same_o which_o christ_n give_v unto_o the_o church_n of_o all_o part_n because_o it_o have_v that_o leak_n that_o be_v a_o weakness_n in_o one_o part_n of_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v general_o strong_a and_o yet_o weak_a in_o some_o particular_a come_v unto_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v these_o the_o first_o reason_n wherefore_o you_o shall_v be_v strong_a 1._o in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o will_v fit_v you_o for_o many_o employment_n it_o will_v make_v we_o go_v through_o much_o work_n with_o great_a ease_n to_o perform_v the_o weighty_a duty_n of_o religion_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o otherwise_o we_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o this_o shall_v persuade_v man_n the_o rather_o because_o god_n reward_v man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n it_o be_v not_o riches_n beauty_n honour_n or_o dignity_n that_o prevail_v with_o god_n in_o his_o give_v the_o reward_n but_o according_a to_o our_o work_n so_o shall_v his_o reward_n be_v and_o this_o reason_n shall_v make_v man_n to_o haste_n to_o get_v into_o christ_n because_o the_o long_o they_o be_v in_o christ_n the_o strong_a they_o be_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o reason_n wherefore_o you_o shall_v desire_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o 2._o bring_v most_o comfort_n and_o cheerfulness_n into_o the_o soul_n 1_o because_o it_o make_v we_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v with_o facility_n and_o easiness_n so_o that_o that_o which_o we_o 1._o do_v be_v easy_a unto_o we_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n and_o weak_a in_o understanding_n any_o high_a point_n of_o religion_n be_v weariness_n unto_o he_o because_o he_o want_v a_o capacity_n to_o conceive_v now_o that_o which_o be_v not_o right_o conceive_v or_o understand_v we_o have_v little_a or_o no_o comfort_n or_o delight_n in_o it_o but_o it_o be_v irkesomenesse_n and_o weariness_n unto_o our_o nature_n whereas_o the_o same_o thing_n unto_o a_o man_n that_o be_v of_o a_o large_a capacity_n be_v easy_a unto_o he_o and_o he_o delight_v in_o they_o 2._o the_o more_o strength_n a_o man_n have_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o more_o health_n he_o have_v in_o his_o 2._o soul_n for_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n the_o more_o natural_a strength_n the_o more_o health_n so_o in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o more_o healthful_a in_o grace_n 3._o it_o bring_v the_o more_o cheerfulness_n into_o the_o heart_n because_o it_o bring_v christ_n and_o god_n 3._o thither_o who_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v he_o there_o for_o that_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o
work_n and_o change_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v they_o suffer_v with_o patience_n the_o spoil_n of_o their_o good_n that_o be_v they_o let_v they_o willing_o go_v life_n and_o liberty_n and_o all_o shall_v go_v ere_o christ_n shall_v go_v a_o noble_a roman_a may_v do_v something_o for_o his_o country_n and_o for_o himself_o but_o there_o be_v a_o by-end_n in_o it_o he_o do_v it_o not_o in_o a_o right_a manner_n unto_o a_o right_a end_n but_o the_o spiritual_a strong_a man_n do_v all_o thing_n in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n unto_o a_o save_a end_n the_o one_o do_v it_o for_o vain_a glory_n but_o the_o other_o in_o uprightness_n of_o heart_n for_o there_o be_v a_o double_a work_n of_o faith_n first_o it_o empty_v a_o man_n as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v 1._o his_o handful_n can_v take_v another_o thing_n till_o he_o let_v his_o handful_n fall_v so_o when_o faith_n enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n it_o empty_v the_o heart_n of_o self_n love_n of_o self_n will_v it_o purge_v out_o the_o old_a rubbish_n that_o be_v natural_o in_o every_o man_n heart_n and_o let_v all_o go_v to_o get_v hold_n on_o christ_n all_o shall_v go_v then_o life_n and_o honour_n and_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n and_o he_o be_v the_o true_o spiritual_a man_n that_o can_v thus_o loose_v the_o world_n to_o cleave_v to_o christ_n and_o miserable_a be_v they_o that_o can_v second_o as_o it_o empty_v the_o heart_n of_o that_o which_o may_v keep_v christ_n out_o of_o the_o soul_n so_o in_o 2._o the_o second_o place_n he_o seek_v all_o thing_n in_o god_n and_o from_o god_n that_o be_v he_o first_o seek_v god_n love_n and_o god_n blessing_n upon_o what_o he_o do_v enjoy_v and_o then_o he_o go_v unto_o secondary_a mean_n and_o use_v they_o as_o help_v but_o a_o man_n that_o want_v faith_n he_o will_v not_o let_v all_o go_v for_o christ_n he_o will_v not_o seek_v first_o unto_o god_n in_o any_o thing_n but_o unto_o secondary_a mean_n and_o then_o if_o he_o fail_v that_o be_v want_v power_n to_o supply_v than_o it_o may_v be_v he_o will_v seek_v unto_o god_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o he_o will_v not_o loose_v his_o life_n or_o liberty_n or_o honour_n for_o christ_n because_o he_o see_v more_o power_n and_o good_a in_o the_o creature_n then_o in_o god_n again_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n between_o christian_a and_o christian_n namely_o faith_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o be_v weak_a and_o other_o be_v strong_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o be_v more_o able_a than_o other_o for_o the_o great_a duty_n of_o reiigion_n as_o for_o example_n caleb_n and_o joshua_n can_v do_v more_o than_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o people_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n but_o because_o they_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o faith_n than_o other_o and_o so_o paul_n say_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v do_v more_o than_o they_o all_o because_o paul_n have_v a_o strong_a faith_n for_o the_o truth_n of_o a_o man_n strength_n be_v know_v by_o his_o strength_n of_o faith_n that_o he_o have_v whether_o he_o be_v natural_o strong_a or_o spiritual_o strong_a for_o this_o be_v the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n after_o the_o humiliation_n of_o he_o in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n namely_o to_o work_v faith_n in_o he_o and_o no_o soon_o faith_n but_o as_o soon_o by_o degree_n strength_n and_o then_o the_o promise_n follow_v faith_n he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptize_v shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o shall_v be_v damn_v mark_v 16._o 16._o and_o this_o be_v the_o course_n 16._o that_o we_o take_v in_o preach_v first_o we_o preach_v the_o law_n unto_o you_o and_o we_o do_v it_o to_o this_o end_n to_o humble_v you_o and_o to_o break_v the_o hard_a disposition_n of_o your_o heart_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a to_o receive_v christ_n and_o when_o we_o have_v thorough_o humble_v you_o then_o we_o preach_v unto_o you_o the_o gospel_n beseech_v and_o persuade_v you_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v and_o to_o lay_v down_o the_o arm_n of_o rebellion_n which_o you_o have_v take_v up_o against_o christ_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v save_v but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o you_o be_v neither_o humble_v by_o the_o one_o nor_o persuade_v and_o provoke_v by_o the_o other_o but_o be_v as_o the_o prophet_n say_v you_o have_v eye_n and_o see_v not_o you_o have_v ear_n but_o you_o hear_v not_o see_v you_o do_v not_o see_v and_o hear_v you_o do_v not_o hear_v as_o for_o example_n when_o a_o judgement_n of_o god_n so_o much_o unto_o you_o beseech_v and_o persuade_v you_o so_o often_o to_o come_v in_o and_o receive_v christ_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v save_v time_n after_o time_n day_n after_o day_n yet_o we_o see_v no_o reformation_n at_o all_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o word_n want_v this_o effect_n in_o you_o as_o to_o humble_v you_o and_o that_o you_o be_v no_o more_o affright_v with_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n than_o you_o be_v and_o that_o you_o remain_v as_o ignorant_a and_o careless_a as_o ever_o you_o be_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v you_o want_v a_o true_a save_n &_o apply_v faith_n for_o if_o you_o have_v that_o the_o word_n will_v work_v other_o effect_n in_o you_o than_o it_o do_v if_o one_o shall_v tell_v a_o man_n that_o such_o or_o such_o a_o benefit_n or_o legacy_n be_v befall_v he_o that_o will_v raise_v he_o unto_o great_a honour_n though_o before_o he_o live_v but_o in_o a_o mean_a condition_n now_o if_o this_o man_n do_v but_o believe_v it_o then_o sure_o he_o will_v rejoice_v true_o so_o if_o you_o do_v but_o believe_v that_o christ_n and_o grace_n and_o salvation_n be_v so_o excellent_a and_o that_o holiness_n and_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n will_v bring_v you_o unto_o so_o happy_a a_o condition_n and_o estate_n as_o to_o be_v the_o heir_n of_o heaven_n you_o will_v rejoice_v in_o christ_n and_o grace_n only_o again_o if_o you_o do_v believe_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v true_a and_o that_o god_n be_v a_o just_a god_n if_o the_o drunkard_n do_v but_o believe_v that_o drunkard_n shall_v be_v damn_v or_o if_o the_o adulterer_n do_v but_o believe_v that_o no_o adulterer_n shall_v inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n &_o christ_n or_o if_o the_o profane_a person_n and_o the_o gamester_n do_v but_o believe_v that_o they_o must_v give_v account_n for_o all_o their_o misspend_a time_n and_o idle_a word_n and_o vain_a communication_n they_o will_v not_o sport_v themselves_o in_o their_o sin_n as_o they_o do_v again_o if_o man_n do_v but_o believe_v that_o god_n call_v who_o and_o when_o he_o list_v and_o that_o many_o be_v call_v but_o few_o be_v choose_v that_o be_v here_o be_v a_o church_n full_a but_o it_o may_v be_v but_o a_o few_o of_o you_o shall_v be_v save_v i_o say_v if_o man_n do_v but_o believe_v this_o they_o will_v not_o sure_o defer_v their_o repentance_n they_o will_v not_o put_v off_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o they_o will_v strike_v while_o the_o iron_n be_v hot_a and_o grind_v while_o the_o wind_n blow_v but_o man_n will_v not_o believe_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n as_o they_o do_v it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o earthly_a thing_n man_n be_v easy_o bring_v with_o god_n who_o be_v the_o king_n of_o king_n and_o lord_n of_o lord_n who_o have_v power_n to_o exalt_v one_o and_o pull_v down_o another_o now_o if_o we_o can_v but_o bring_v our_o heart_n to_o believe_v this_o that_o in_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n we_o shall_v get_v and_o grow_v in_o favour_n with_o god_n than_o man_n will_v be_v stir_v up_o to_o set_v upon_o this_o work_n yet_o withal_o you_o must_v know_v that_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o do_v not_o please_v god_n by_o merit_n for_o so_o christ_n only_o and_o none_o but_o christ_n please_v god_n but_o when_o you_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n you_o please_v god_n by_o object_n because_o you_o choose_v grace_n and_o holiness_n and_o his_o favour_n above_o all_o thing_n merit_n be_v the_o same_o argument_n which_o christ_n use_v unto_o his_o father_n when_o he_o will_v have_v his_o father_n to_o glorify_v he_o joh._n 17._o 4_o 5._o father_n i_o have_v glorify_v thou_o on_o earth_n i_o have_v finish_v the_o work_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o 5._o father_n glorify_v i_o that_o be_v i_o have_v merit_v this_o at_o thy_o hand_n that_o thou_o shall_v glorify_v i_o because_o i_o from_o the_o pipe_n unto_o many_o place_n so_o the_o mean_n be_v as_o pipe_n to_o carry_v grace_n into_o the_o soul_n therefore_o use_v they_o and_o cut_v they_o not_o off_o by_o carelessness_n if_o you_o do_v you_o will_v cut_v off_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o three_o mean_n if_o you_o will_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v get_v rectify_v judgement_n mean_n that_o be_v you_o must_v see_v that_o your_o judgement_n be_v right_a for_o man_n do_v deceive_v themselves_o in_o their_o judgement_n they_o think_v that_o they_o have_v strong_a judgement_n and_o that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o thing_n when_o indeed_o they_o be_v marvellous_a weak_a now_o that_o you_o may_v not_o deceive_v yourselves_o i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o sign_n of_o a_o rectified_a judgement_n the_o first_o sign_n of_o a_o rectify_a judgement_n be_v this_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o your_o constancy_n so_o much_o constancy_n sign_n in_o good_a and_o so_o much_o be_v your_o judgement_n rectify_v and_o on_o the_o contrary_a so_o much_o inconstancy_n and_o so_o much_o weakness_n as_o for_o example_n when_o a_o man_n have_v propound_v a_o rule_n unto_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o it_o it_o argue_v that_o he_o be_v weak_a in_o his_o judgement_n because_o he_o keep_v not_o close_o to_o the_o rule_n or_o that_o there_o be_v strong_a or_o more_o argument_n to_o the_o contrary_a which_o make_v he_o to_o fall_v away_o and_o sit_v down_o from_o the_o rule_n and_o he_o be_v thus_o pose_v because_o he_o be_v but_o weak_a in_o judgement_n as_o for_o example_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v come_v and_o proffer_v a_o man_n one_o hundred_o pound_n not_o to_o leave_v such_o a_o action_n and_o another_o man_n shall_v come_v and_o offer_v he_o two_o hundred_o pound_n to_o leave_v it_o if_o the_o man_n be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n he_o will_v be_v draw_v by_o the_o great_a reward_n though_o it_o be_v evil_a therefore_o if_o a_o false_a gloss_n upon_o your_o do_v you_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n as_o for_o example_n in_o study_v the_o law_n the_o thing_n in_o itself_o be_v good_a but_o if_o by_o study_v of_o it_o you_o seek_v to_o excuse_v you_o from_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o you_o have_v no_o time_n and_o leisure_n you_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n because_o you_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v they_o be_v try_v but_o when_o they_o be_v draw_v than_o they_o break_v they_o have_v no_o strength_n to_o withstand_v sin_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o god_n many_o time_n send_v temptation_n and_o affliction_n to_o this_o end_n to_o try_v man_n to_o see_v what_o be_v in_o they_o whether_o they_o be_v such_o as_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v or_o no_o not_o that_o he_o know_v not_o before_o but_o because_o that_o by_o his_o trial_n other_o may_v know_v what_o they_o be_v and_o here_o god_n make_v a_o difference_n in_o trial_n some_o be_v try_v by_o small_a other_o by_o great_a trial_n partly_o because_o hypocrite_n may_v be_v know_v and_o partly_o because_o he_o may_v stir_v up_o the_o godly_a to_o get_v more_o strength_n as_o also_o to_o wean_v they_o from_o depend_v upon_o their_o own_o strength_n therefore_o in_o esa._n 40._o 30._o it_o be_v say_v even_o the_o youth_n shall_v faint_v and_o be_v weary_a that_o be_v he_o that_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v strong_a in_o you_o spend_v your_o strength_n upon_o other_o thing_n and_o not_o in_o the_o hindrance_n strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n this_o make_v you_o not_o to_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n therefore_o you_o must_v be_v wise_a to_o take_v away_o from_o these_o thing_n and_o spend_v more_o time_n and_o take_v more_o pain_n in_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o you_o grow_v not_o all_o your_o time_n and_o affection_n be_v after_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n and_o how_o you_o may_v grow_v strong_a in_o that_o that_o you_o can_v the_o inward_a man_n this_o man_n be_v a_o weak_a man_n in_o grace_n as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o have_v money_n to_o bestow_v at_o market_n if_o when_o he_o shall_v come_v there_o he_o shall_v bestow_v it_o on_o babble_n and_o not_o on_o the_o thing_n that_o he_o go_v to_o buy_v this_o man_n be_v a_o foolish_a man_n especial_o he_o know_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n for_o it_o how_o he_o have_v lay_v it_o out_o even_o thus_o and_o much_o more_o foolish_a be_v man_n when_o they_o spend_v their_o time_n on_o their_o pleasure_n and_o lust_n which_o be_v base_a thing_n and_o not_o on_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o befool_v themselves_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o price_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o fool_n but_o he_o have_v no_o heart_n when_o man_n neglect_v the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o forsake_v a_o great_a price_n that_o will_v enrich_v they_o but_o because_o they_o want_v knowledge_n because_o they_o be_v weak_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o judge_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n therefore_o never_o brag_v of_o your_o strength_n except_o it_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o take_v heed_n of_o neglect_v the_o time_n paul_n will_v have_v the_o gather_n for_o the_o poor_a to_o be_v before_o he_o come_v that_o that_o may_v not_o hinder_v he_o from_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n though_o that_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n it_o be_v a_o good_a speech_n of_o one_o who_o after_o that_o he_o have_v spend_v much_o time_n in_o write_v about_o controversy_n at_o last_o conclude_v i_o have_v say_v he_o spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n but_o not_o in_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n the_o devil_n have_v beguile_v i_o but_o he_o shall_v go_v beyond_o i_o no_o more_o that_o time_n that_o i_o have_v i_o will_v spend_v unto_o another_o end_n it_o be_v wisdom_n in_o you_o to_o do_v the_o like_a you_o that_o have_v spend_v and_o do_v spend_v your_o time_n about_o trifle_n and_o babble_n upon_o your_o lust_n conclude_v that_o now_o for_o the_o time_n to_o be_v unpossible_a that_o the_o soul_n shall_v grow_v in_o holiness_n till_o they_o be_v purge_v away_o therefore_o be_v earnest_a with_o god_n to_o purge_v out_o these_o humour_n whether_o they_o be_v profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o honour_n or_o any_o other_o thing_n and_o in_o thus_o do_v you_o shall_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o the_o strong_a that_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v the_o cut_v with_o a_o chissell_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n because_o no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v be_v reach_v it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o he_o can_v do_v water_n you_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n into_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o whether_o you_o have_v a_o new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v and_o experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v appear_v the_o power_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o use_v that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o instrument_n that_o will_v sound_v well_o but_o he_o want_v skill_n to_o use_v it_o so_o many_o man_n they_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o because_o they_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v withal_o power_n to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v to_o use_v those_o habit_n which_o be_v in_o they_o thus_o samson_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n have_v power_n to_o use_v mean_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n be_v this_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o know_v the_o spirit_n for_o what_o be_v the_o mean_n reason_n that_o man_n do_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n but_o because_o they_o know_v he_o not_o they_o do_v not_o know_v he_o in_o his_o purity_n in_o his_o free_a work_n in_o his_o incomprehensible_a greatness_n in_o his_o increate_v holiness_n and_o therefore_o they_o put_v off_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n man_n think_v that_o now_o their_o sin_n in_o this_o kind_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o simon_n magus_n be_v it_o be_v true_a say_v they_o simon_n magus_n sin_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n and_o worthy_a of_o punishment_n because_o he_o think_v to_o have_v buy_v the_o spirit_n with_o money_n but_o if_o we_o well_o consider_v man_n deal_n now_o with_o the_o spirit_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o same_o sin_n be_v commit_v now_o i_o say_v man_n think_v they_o do_v not_o commit_v this_o sin_n of_o simon_n magus_n when_o indeed_o you_o do_v you_o know_v people_n be_v wise_a that_o they_o verse_n will_v but_o consider_v with_o themselves_o viz._n their_o sin_n their_o affliction_n my_o love_n in_o their_o deliverance_n that_o be_v o_o that_o they_o will_v but_o look_v back_o unto_o the_o former_a account_n and_o see_v what_o they_o have_v do_v for_o my_o love_n it_o will_v cause_v they_o to_o be_v humble_a dolour_n be_v the_o reluctancy_n of_o the_o will_n now_o the_o will_n will_v not_o strive_v till_o there_o be_v a_o change_n wrought_v neither_o will_v a_o man_n be_v humble_v true_o till_o there_o be_v a_o thorough_a change_n in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o labour_n after_o holiness_n and_o get_v both_o a_o sense_n of_o holiness_n and_o a_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o will_v humble_v you_o the_o three_o mean_n to_o get_v humiliation_n be_v application_n you_o must_v apply_v both_o what_o you_o have_v receive_v mean_n and_o what_o you_o have_v pay_v together_o and_o then_o cast_v up_o the_o account_n first_o consider_v what_o you_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n and_o what_o you_o do_v present_o enjoy_v and_o then_o consider_v what_o have_v i_o pay_v what_o have_v i_o do_v how_o have_v i_o demean_v myself_o what_o obedience_n have_v i_o yield_v what_o thanks_n have_v i_o return_v again_o consider_v the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o grace_n and_o then_o consider_v sin_n that_o it_o be_v evil_a by_o nature_n that_o it_o be_v evil_a to_o i_o that_o it_o bring_v forth_o evil_a effect_n except_o you_o thus_o wise_o apply_v it_o it_o will_v not_o humble_v you_o you_o will_v not_o feel_v sin_n or_o esteem_v it_o as_o a_o burden_n because_o you_o will_v not_o see_v it_o out_o of_o its_o place_n it_o will_v be_v as_o a_o heavy_a burden_n at_o the_o foot_n which_o though_o never_o so_o heavy_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o feel_v it_o will_v not_o hurt_v a_o man_n so_o long_o as_o it_o lie_v there_o even_o so_o sin_n will_v not_o be_v a_o burden_n unto_o the_o soul_n till_o it_o be_v apply_v unto_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o spirit_n but_o when_o it_o be_v apply_v than_o it_o will_v be_v like_o a_o burden_n upon_o the_o back_n which_o a_o man_n will_v quick_o be_v weary_a of_o sin_n will_v then_o clog_n a_o regenerate_a soul_n and_o humble_v he_o and_o this_o wisdom_n we_o may_v learn_v of_o the_o devil_n himself_o when_o he_o will_v bring_v a_o man_n unto_o despair_n he_o will_v still_o hold_v out_o before_o a_o man_n his_o sin_n and_o that_o with_o aggravation_n of_o they_o that_o so_o he_o may_v come_v unto_o the_o sight_n of_o they_o and_o then_o he_o will_v hold_v out_o the_o justice_n and_o purity_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v not_o let_v sin_n go_v unpunished_a that_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v that_o so_o a_o christian_a may_v be_v out_o of_o measure_n deject_v and_o thus_o a_o christian_a shall_v do_v if_o he_o will_v be_v humble_v let_v he_o still_o set_v sin_n before_o he_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o the_o general_a but_o also_o to_o apply_v it_o in_o particular_a unto_o the_o conscience_n and_o especial_o in_o case_n of_o relapse_n for_o as_o figure_n add_v to_o cipher_n do_v make_v the_o total_a the_o more_o so_o relapse_n in_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n and_o a_o particular_a notice_n of_o they_o will_v cause_v great_a humiliation_n again_o let_v man_n set_v before_o he_o sin_n against_o knowledge_n or_o great_a sin_n and_o this_o will_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o humble_v you_o for_o what_o be_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o sin_v against_o knowledge_n upon_o a_o obstinate_a will_n in_o despite_n of_o god_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o knowledge_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n appear_v in_o act_n 17._o 30._o at_o the_o time_n of_o their_o ignorance_n 30._o god_n wink_v that_o be_v so_o long_o as_o you_o want_v the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n both_o of_o know_v i_o and_o my_o spirit_n i_o little_o regard_v it_o i_o wink_v at_o it_o that_o be_v i_o esteem_v it_o not_o so_o great_a but_o past_o it_o over_o but_o now_o the_o cause_n be_v alter_v since_o i_o come_v in_o my_o own_o person_n and_o preach_v unto_o you_o now_o i_o will_v not_o wink_n at_o your_o sin_n as_o before_o i_o will_v not_o pass_v it_o because_o we_o look_v upon_o it_o a_o far_o off_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o it_o do_v not_o affright_v we_o now_o to_o help_v you_o to_o bring_v thing_n to_o a_o propinquity_n that_o you_o may_v that_o have_v commit_v a_o foul_a fact_n a_o long_a while_n ago_o if_o his_o pardon_n be_v
christ_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o christian_n have_v this_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a turbulent_a sorrow_n that_o break_v the_o heart_n answ._n and_o mollify_v and_o soften_v it_o but_o there_o be_v another_o sorrow_n which_o i_o call_v a_o temper_a sorrow_n and_o that_o sorrow_n have_v in_o it_o both_o a_o sight_n of_o hell_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o heaven_n a_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n which_o far_o exceed_v this_o sorrow_n for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o joy_n the_o great_a joy_n be_v not_o express_v by_o laughter_n for_o that_o be_v the_o great_a joy_n that_o be_v the_o joy_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n so_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a grief_n that_o be_v express_v by_o tear_n and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a fire_n that_o make_v the_o most_o crackle_v and_o noise_n nor_o that_o the_o deep_a water_n that_o make_v the_o most_o roar_a so_o be_v it_o not_o the_o great_a grief_n or_o sorrow_n that_o express_v itself_o by_o this_o turbulent_a passion_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o the_o great_a grief_n be_v nothing_o when_o a_o sinner_n apprehend_v sin_n within_o and_o see_v it_o in_o its_o own_o colour_n than_o it_o humble_v he_o second_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o nature_n answ._n of_o man_n some_o man_n be_v of_o a_o more_o hardy_a nature_n than_o other_o and_o again_o some_o be_v of_o a_o more_o soft_a and_o tender_a disposition_n for_o example_n some_o man_n flesh_n will_v heal_v soon_o than_o other_o though_o the_o wound_n be_v the_o same_o so_o some_o have_v more_o soft_a and_o gentle_a nature_n and_o therefore_o soon_o wrought_v upon_o again_o some_o god_n intend_v to_o build_v a_o great_a work_n upon_o and_o therefore_o he_o humble_v they_o the_o more_o again_o some_o he_o will_v season_v above_o other_o and_o therefore_o will_v humble_v they_o the_o more_o that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o it_o three_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o although_o all_o answ._n have_v not_o the_o like_a measure_n of_o sorrow_n neither_o the_o same_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n that_o other_o have_v &_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o much_o cast_v down_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o other_o be_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o be_v not_o humble_a at_o all_o but_o because_o the_o condition_n follow_v it_o so_o close_o that_o it_o have_v not_o power_n to_o work_v that_o effect_n in_o they_o which_o it_o do_v in_o other_o that_o see_v the_o same_o condition_n a_o far_o off_o or_o not_o at_o all_o they_o apprehend_v christ_n by_o faith_n and_o see_v reconciliation_n through_o he_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o deject_a as_o other_o that_o see_v he_o not_o thus_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o discourage_v though_o thou_o find_v that_o thy_o humiliation_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o other_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o same_o and_o the_o apprehension_n the_o same_o but_o christ_n the_o condition_n of_o thy_o peace_n be_v apprehend_v near_o thou_o by_o faith_n and_o this_o qualify_v the_o tempest_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o christ_n be_v not_o see_v of_o the_o other_o as_o a_o saviour_n and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n as_o for_o example_n there_o be_v two_o man_n set_v upon_o by_o robber_n the_o one_o see_v no_o help_n or_o no_o way_n to_o escape_v and_o hereupon_o he_o be_v marvellous_o afflict_a and_o astonish_v because_o he_o find_v himfelfe_n unable_a to_o resist_v or_o make_v his_o party_n good_a with_o they_o but_o the_o other_o man_n beset_v with_o robber_n see_v another_o near_a hand_n that_o will_v stand_v close_o to_o he_o and_o thereupon_o he_o trust_v hope_n and_o depend_v upon_o the_o man_n to_o help_v he_o this_o man_n see_v the_o danger_n aswell_o as_o the_o other_o and_o fear_n but_o his_o fear_n be_v not_o a_o distract_a fear_n neither_o be_v it_o so_o great_a as_o the_o other_o because_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o joy_n and_o confidence_n in_o that_o he_o see_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v yet_o he_o fear_v the_o same_o that_o the_o other_o fear_n and_o be_v true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a unto_o he_o that_o save_v he_o from_o the_o danger_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n they_o that_o have_v a_o turbulent_a kind_n of_o sorrow_n see_v death_n and_o hell_n and_o sin_n and_o damnation_n but_o he_o see_v christ_n so_o far_o off_o that_o he_o can_v depend_v upon_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o hence_o for_o the_o present_a be_v marvellous_o cast_v down_o but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o mix_a sorrow_n speak_v of_o see_v the_o same_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n but_o withal_o he_o apprehend_v christ_n as_o a_o helper_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o here_o upon_o be_v not_o so_o much_o deject_v and_o cast_v do_v wne_z as_o the_o other_z and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v as_o true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a as_o the_o other_o therefore_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o heart_n sensible_a of_o sin_n that_o be_v labour_v to_o know_v sin_n and_o the_o evil_a of_o it_o and_o withal_o labour_v to_o see_v christ_n or_o else_o you_o will_v be_v over-frighted_n with_o they_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o prison_n for_o treason_n or_o a_o great_a fact_n he_o know_v before_o what_o sentence_n the_o judge_n and_o jury_n will_v pass_v upon_o he_o but_o he_o care_v not_o if_o before_o he_o have_v get_v the_o king_n pardon_n so_o if_o you_o know_v sin_n and_o know_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o know_v not_o christ_n you_o will_v have_v no_o comfort_n in_o your_o knowledge_n labour_v therefore_o to_o get_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n john_n 16._o 9_o 9_o a_o man_n be_v no_o soon_o convict_v but_o there_o will_v be_v a_o change_n wrought_v in_o he_o for_o a_o man_n be_v then_o convict_v when_o he_o be_v overcome_v every_o way_n and_o thus_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v convince_v you_o of_o sin_n seek_v what_o way_n you_o will_v to_o keep_v off_o the_o stroke_n of_o the_o spirit_n yet_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a and_o this_o stroke_n shall_v humble_v you_o if_o you_o belong_v unto_o god_n as_o it_o do_v paul_n in_o this_o place_n but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o know_v whether_o i_o be_o true_o humble_v or_o no_o for_o your_o better_a help_n i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o sign_n by_o which_o you_o may_v examine_v yourselves_o and_o then_o according_o you_o may_v judge_v of_o your_o estate_n the_o first_o sign_n whereby_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v thorough_o humble_v or_o no_o be_v this_o if_o you_o sign_n love_v much_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v thorough_o humble_v die_v for_o christ_n see_v christ_n save_v my_o soul_n from_o hell_n and_o that_o by_o such_o a_o price_n of_o so_o much_o worth_n as_o his_o own_o blood_n be_v how_o can_v i_o then_o think_v that_o my_o life_n be_v too_o much_o for_o christ_n therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o examine_v your_o humiliation_n by_o your_o love_n if_o you_o love_v he_o not_o above_o all_o thing_n if_o you_o prize_v he_o not_o above_o all_o thing_n you_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o true_o humble_v and_o that_o i_o may_v persuade_v you_o to_o love_n christ_n and_o grace_n and_o holiness_n above_o all_o thing_n consider_v these_o two_o motive_n the_o first_o motive_n be_v this_o consider_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o i_o persuade_v you_o unto_o the_o goodness_n motive_n and_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n make_v man_n to_o love_v they_o man_n will_v not_o love_v any_o thing_n except_o they_o see_v some_o excellency_n in_o it_o or_o at_o least_o wise_a esteem_n it_o so_o but_o if_o it_o be_v excellent_a than_o it_o win_v their_o love_n so_o it_o will_v be_v with_o you_o in_o this_o if_o you_o see_v into_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o grace_n it_o will_v win_v your_o love_n you_o will_v prize_v he_o above_o all_o thing_n no_o man_n will_v prize_v a_o jewel_n till_o he_o know_v
