appear_v as_o he_o be_v we_o can_v but_o love_v he_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n it_o be_v say_v sanctify_v they_o with_o thy_o truth_n that_o be_v when_o any_o man_n have_v the_o truth_n reveal_v unto_o he_o he_o see_v thing_n as_o they_o be_v than_o his_o spirit_n cleave_v unto_o god_n love_v god_n marry_v itself_o unto_o god_n keep_v itself_o proper_a unto_o he_o wean_v itself_o and_o estrange_v itself_o from_o all_o other_o thing_n that_o which_o be_v call_v sanctify_v in_o that_o place_n you_o shall_v find_v in_o two_o place_n of_o scripture_n express_v in_o such_o term_n as_o express_v this_o double_a act_n of_o christ_n which_o i_o name_v unto_o you_o as_o in_o the_o 2_o tit._n verse_n penult_n he_o have_v purify_v to_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n that_o be_v his_o spirit_n be_v stir_v within_o he_o when_o he_o see_v the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o people_n of_o athens_n so_o when_o a_o man_n spirit_n stir_v itself_o after_o this_o manner_n when_o from_o that_o new_a quality_n that_o be_v put_v into_o it_o it_o work_v out_o the_o uncleanness_n that_o be_v in_o it_o this_o be_v the_o holiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o no_o man_n have_v it_o but_o from_o christ._n as_o the_o needle_n unless_o it_o have_v it_o from_o the_o loadstone_n simile_n can_v not_o have_v that_o property_n of_o look_v to_o the_o north_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n before_o christ_n dwell_v in_o he_o before_o he_o have_v put_v a_o new_a quality_n of_o holiness_n he_o never_o look_v towards_o god_n but_o when_o it_o be_v do_v once_o it_o can_v do_v otherwise_o therefore_o those_o in_o who_o christ_n dwell_v can_v sin_v that_o be_v can_v delight_v in_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o great_a benefit_n therefore_o and_o this_o holiness_n of_o holy_a you_o know_v that_o place_n whether_o you_o eat_v or_o drink_v or_o whatsoever_o you_o do_v do_v all_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n that_o be_v respect_n god_n in_o it_o make_v not_o yourselves_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o it_o for_o then_o your_o heart_n be_v unholy_a for_o holiness_n be_v to_o keep_v the_o
the_o 7._o mean_n if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v get_v the_o spirit_n all_o other_o mean_n will_v nothing_o avail_v you_o except_o you_o get_v this_o for_o this_o be_v that_o that_o make_v they_o effectual_a and_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o man_n samson_n be_v strong_a and_o so_o be_v other_o man_n but_o samson_n be_v strong_a than_o otherman_n because_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n and_o it_o be_v say_v oâ—_n john_n the_o baptist_n that_o he_o come_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o eliah_n that_o be_v he_o have_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o eliah_n have_v and_o therefore_o he_o have_v the_o great_a efficacy_n if_o john_n have_v not_o have_v this_o spirit_n he_o have_v be_v but_o as_o other_o man_n therefore_o whatsoever_o you_o do_v labour_n above_o all_o thing_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n nothing_o will_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n except_o you_o have_v the_o spirit_n it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o make_v the_o inward_a man_n to_o grow_v strong_a and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o mean_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o for_o this_o point_n now_o we_o proceed_v the_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v the_o mean_n which_o the_o apostle_n lay_v down_o whereby_o they_o may_v be_v strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v to_o have_v the_o spirit_n that_o he_o will_v grant_v you_o etc._n etc._n that_o you_o may_v be_v strengthen_v by_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o be_v if_o you_o will_v knowwhat_o will_v strengthen_v you_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n hence_o note_v this_o point_n that_o whatsoever_o save_v or_o sanctify_v grace_n or_o strength_n of_o grace_n any_o man_n have_v it_o all_o proceed_v from_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n i_o doctr._n say_v all_o save_a grace_n all_o strength_n of_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o spirit_n yet_o do_v not_o mistake_v i_o as_o if_o i_o do_v exclude_v the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n for_o they_o work_v together_o in_o every_o act_n the_o father_n work_v not_o without_o the_o son_n the_o son_n work_v not_o without_o the_o father_n the_o father_n &_o the_o son_n work_v not_o without_o the_o spirit_n neither_o do_v the_o spirit_n work_v without_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n for_o what_o one_o do_v all_o do_v but_o i_o ascribe_v the_o work_n of_o sanctification_n unto_o the_o spirit_n because_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o sanctify_v and_o he_o be_v the_o strengthener_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v all_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o father_n as_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o then_o through_o christ_n by_o the_o spirit_n grace_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o those_o 3._o distinction_n of_o the_o trinity_n be_v good_a the_o father_n be_v of_o himself_o alone_o the_o son_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n that_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n proceed_v from_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o be_v send_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n to_o work_v grace_n and_o holiness_n in_o they_o and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o only_a worker_n and_o strengthener_n of_o grace_n because_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o holy_a fountain_n as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v the_o fruit_n must_v needs_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o way_n to_o get_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n be_v to_o get_v the_o holy_a spirit_n now_o in_o that_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v two_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v require_v first_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v must_v proceed_v from_o a_o 1._o holy_a fountain_n but_o the_o spirit_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o most_o holy_a fountain_n and_o pure_a which_o be_v god_n therefore_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n that_o he_o work_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o be_v require_v in_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o 2._o sanctify_v be_v this_o that_o he_o subsist_v in_o sanctification_n that_o be_v that_o he_o depend_v not_o upon_o another_o for_o sanctification_n but_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o sanctify_v of_o himself_o now_o this_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n itself_o that_o be_v subsist_v in_o sanctification_n and_o abound_v in_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o able_a to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o that_o you_o may_v more_o full_o understand_v this_o point_n i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n work_v holiness_n and_o sanctification_n and_o this_o will_v appear_v in_o four_o thing_n especial_o the_o first_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n in_o the_o wor_n the_o soul_n be_v this_o by_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n a_o effectual_a operative_a and_o digestive_a faculty_n that_o be_v by_o rear_v the_o inward_a man_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o set_v up_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o shed_v abroad_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o bless_a effect_n of_o grace_n into_o every_o faculty_n even_o as_o the_o blood_n be_v in_o use_v into_o every_o vain_a or_o as_o the_o soul_n go_v through_o every_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o give_v life_n unto_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n go_v through_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n and_o power_n into_o they_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o in_o the_o ephes_n 4._o his_o effectual_a power_n that_o be_v 4._o he_o have_v such_o efficacy_n in_o work_v that_o he_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o the_o soul._n the_o second_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n be_v this_o wor._n when_o he_o have_v set_v up_o the_o building_n and_o sweep_v every_o corner_n of_o the_o soul_n then_o he_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n that_o be_v by_o put_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n into_o the_o soul_n as_o first_o when_o a_o man_n can_v do_v no_o more_o than_o a_o natural_a man_n can_v do_v by_o nature_n than_o the_o spirit_n fortify_v and_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o act_v holy_o and_o spiritual_o as_o for_o example_n any_o hand_n can_v cut_v with_o a_o cheesil_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v art_n and_o time_n about_o it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o can_v natural_o do_v water_n you_o know_v of_o itself_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n in_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o that_o be_v whether_o you_o have_v new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v as_o i_o say_v it_o first_o build_v the_o house_n and_o sweep_v the_o room_n and_o then_o it_o fill_v and_o furnish_v the_o room_n with_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n be_v this_o when_o it_o have_v give_v we_o new_a habit_n than_o it_o enable_v wor._n and_o help_v we_o to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a when_o we_o have_v they_o for_o herein_o appear_v the_o power_n and_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o the_o use_n of_o that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v of_o power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v power_n withal_o to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v and_o use_v those_o habit_n that_o be_v in_o they_o
if_o you_o find_v your_o own_o spirit_n dead_a in_o you_o and_o christ_n spirit_n quick_a and_o lively_a in_o you_o and_o this_o you_o shall_v know_v also_o by_o your_o affection_n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v other_o affection_n both_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o holiness_n and_o to_o the_o saint_n than_o you_o have_v before_o it_o be_v certain_a you_o have_v the_o spirit_n for_o this_o be_v that_o which_o follow_v the_o spirit_n for_o when_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a it_o work_v another_o kind_n of_o love_n in_o a_o man_n then_o a_o man_n natural_o have_v and_o again_o it_o make_v a_o man_n live_v another_o kind_n of_o life_n than_o he_o do_v before_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o paul_n in_o 2_o gal._n 20._o i_o live_v but_o not_o i_o but_o christ_n in_o i_o that_o 20._o be_v there_o be_v a_o proportion_n and_o likeness_n between_o the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a and_o christ._n that_o be_v when_o the_o spirit_n enter_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o will_v begin_v to_o put_v off_o the_o old_a man_n and_o to_o put_v on_o the_o new_a man_n it_o will_v put_v off_o their_o own_o power_n and_o strength_n to_o good_a and_o put_v on_o christ_n only_o yet_o mistake_v i_o not_o i_o say_v not_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v change_v for_o the_o soul_n in_o substance_n be_v the_o same_o as_o it_o be_v before_o but_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n when_o the_o spirit_n come_v it_o put_v new_a quality_n and_o habit_n unto_o it_o it_o alter_v and_o change_v the_o disposition_n of_o it_o it_o give_v it_o that_o sense_n which_o before_o it_o feel_v not_o and_o the_o sight_n which_o before_o it_o see_v not_o hence_o it_o be_v thorough_o change_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o quality_n and_o disposition_n of_o what_o it_o be_v and_o yet_o in_o substance_n remain_v the_o same_o as_o for_o example_n put_v iron_n into_o the_o fire_n the_o iron_n be_v the_o same_o it_o be_v in_o substance_n before_o it_o come_v into_o the_o fire_n but_o now_o it_o have_v another_o quality_n it_o be_v cold_a and_o stiff_a and_o hard_a and_o unpliable_a but_o now_o it_o be_v hot_a soft_a and_o pliable_a and_o this_o change_n be_v throughout_o in_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v iron_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a he_o mingle_v and_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v if_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v in_o you_o the_o body_n be_v dead_a as_o touch_v sin_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v alive_a that_o be_v he_o be_v like_o a_o tree_n that_o want_v both_o sap_n and_o root_n or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v dead_a that_o want_v a_o soul_n he_o be_v now_o dead_a whatsoever_o he_o be_v before_o therefore_o examine_v if_o this_o thorough_a and_o great_a change_n be_v you_o see_v then_o what_o death_n there_o be_v in_o you_o to_o sin_n and_o what_o life_n unto_o holiness_n i_o call_v it_o a_o thorough_a and_o great_a change_n because_o a_o little_a one_o will_v never_o bring_v you_o into_o such_o a_o frame_n as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o heaven_n and_o love_v he_o love_v the_o good_a but_o yet_o there_o be_v weakness_n in_o the_o will_n he_o will_v not_o yield_v any_o true_a unreserved_a obedience_n to_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o thus_o in_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n that_o be_v in_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o that_o lead_v he_o unto_o a_o universal_a growth_n in_o all_o part_n now_o in_o the_o natural_a growth_n we_o say_v it_o be_v not_o proper_a augmentation_n except_o there_o be_v a_o growth_n in_o all_o part_n as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v grow_v in_o one_o member_n and_o not_o in_o another_o as_o in_o the_o arm_n or_o leg_n we_o will_v not_o say_v that_o be_v a_o growth_n but_o a_o disease_n and_o that_o many_o humour_n in_o the_o body_n be_v meet_v together_o that_o it_o be_v rather_o a_o sign_n it_o shall_v be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o body_n then_o a_o help_n unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o body_n even_o so_o the_o growth_n in_o the_o natural_a strength_n in_o any_o one_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n rather_o hurt_v then_o help_n that_o be_v it_o rather_o show_v the_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n than_o the_o health_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n grow_v in_o all_o part_n so_o much_o for_o the_o first_o difference_n the_o second_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o beginning_n and_o end_v of_o differ_v that_o strength_n that_o be_v it_o have_v another_o alpha_n and_o omega_n for_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o spiritual_a man_n be_v wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o word_n of_o god_n as_o thus_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n be_v teach_v he_o out_o of_o god_n know_v it_o by_o these_o particular_n first_o examine_v whether_o ever_o thou_o be_v humble_v that_o be_v 1._o examine_v whether_o by_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o law_n you_o have_v have_v such_o a_o fight_n of_o sin_n that_o have_v break_v your_o heart_n if_o thus_o in_o the_o first_o place_n you_o come_v by_o it_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o it_o be_v the_o true_a growth_n for_o this_o be_v the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o come_v to_o change_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a and_o to_o make_v he_o a_o new_a creature_n it_o deep_o humble_v he_o second_o examine_v different_a end_n that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o they_o be_v as_o far_o if_o not_o further_o different_a than_o the_o beginning_n for_o as_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n have_v a_o different_a beginning_n so_o it_o have_v a_o different_a end_n that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o they_o be_v so_o far_o if_o not_o further_o different_a than_o the_o beginning_n for_o as_o the_o holiness_n that_o be_v in_o a_o gracious_a man_n arise_v from_o a_o high_a well_o head_n so_o it_o lead_v a_o man_n to_o a_o more_o noble_a and_o excellent_a end_n then_o the_o natural_a strength_n for_o the_o end_n of_o may_v have_v more_o familiarity_n with_o he_o and_o more_o confidence_n &_o boldness_n with_o he_o in_o prayer_n in_o a_o word_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o every_o good_a work_n but_o the_o end_n of_o the_o natural_a man_n strength_n be_v his_o himself_n his_o own_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n &_o his_o own_o good_a for_o as_o the_o rise_n of_o any_o thing_n be_v high_a so_o the_o end_n be_v high_a as_o for_o example_n water_n be_v lift_v upon_o the_o top_n of_o some_o mountain_n or_o high_a place_n because_o it_o may_v go_v further_o then_o if_o it_o be_v upon_o even_a ground_n so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n he_o be_v set_v up_o high_o he_o have_v another_o end_n &_o that_o be_v to_o please_v god_n and_o not_o himself_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o second_o difference_n the_o three_o difference_n be_v this_o he_o that_o be_v spiritual_o strong_a be_v strong_a in_o faith_n that_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n differ_v be_v rear_v the_o building_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul._n as_o for_o example_n if_o you_o will_v know_v whether_o the_o plant_n receive_v virtue_n from_o the_o olive_n or_o no_o than_o you_o must_v drunkenness_n and_o his_o uncleanness_n and_o his_o old_a evil_a haunt_n but_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o forsake_v all_o neither_o do_v he_o keep_v out_o sin_n by_o the_o spirit_n but_o by_o a_o natural_a papist_n and_o thousand_o of_o protestant_n at_o this_o day_n from_o faith_n that_o shall_v uphold_v their_o soul_n but_o a_o conceit_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n the_o jew_n they_o will_v perform_v obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o venture_v their_o salvation_n upon_o that_o righteousness_n rom._n 10_o 2d_o and_o therefore_o they_o can_v not_o believe_v so_o the_o papist_n now_o proclaim_v himself_o we_o lose_v all_o in_o adam_n and_o recover_v all_o again_o in_o christ._n many_o ignorant_a protestant_n and_o some_o that_o have_v knowledge_n also_o will_v not_o stick_v to_o say_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o good_a meaning_n deal_v righteous_o and_o serve_v god_n he_o shall_v be_v accept_v all_o which_o be_v nothing_o without_o christ_n for_o the_o more_o a_o man_n go_v on_o in_o good_a intention_n before_o he_o be_v in_o christ_n by_o faith_n all_o his_o performance_n be_v but_o curse_a abomination_n and_o so_o further_o off_o from_o faith_n and_o that_o which_o god_n have_v most_o severe_o punish_v as_o he_o do_v saul_n his_o good_a intention_n without_o obedience_n unto_o he_o but_o may_v some_o say_v if_o it_o be_v so_o than_o it_o be_v better_a to_o sin_n object_n and_o not_o do_v good_a work_n â—t_a all_o not_o so_o for_o than_o thou_o encrease_v thy_o punishment_n thy_o answ._n sin_n be_v the_o less_o if_o thou_o have_v a_o good_a present_a the_o lord_n do_v not_o call_v you_o to_o these_o trouble_n he_o put_v you_o not_o upon_o that_o service_n you_o must_v know_v that_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o that_o strengthen_v the_o
