the_o apostle_n therefore_o tell_v we_o that_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n now_o there_o be_v a_o threefold_a spiritual_a love_n require_v to_o expedite_v our_o great_a work_n first_o a_o shadow_n and_o essay_n of_o the_o divine_a perfection_n the_o soul_n will_v in_o order_n unto_o god_n will_n god_n now_o will_v holiness_n because_o it_o be_v most_o desirable_a and_o we_o must_v will_v our_o own_o holiness_n because_o if_o we_o love_v god_n as_o we_o pretend_v to_o do_v our_o will_n must_v be_v conformable_a to_o his_o holy_a will._n second_o love_n to_o god_n be_v a_o help_n to_o duty_n because_o it_o be_v in_o and_o by_o duty_n that_o we_o enjoy_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o have_v communion_n and_o fellowship_n with_o he_o these_o be_v the_o lattice_n through_o which_o god_n appear_v to_o the_o long_a soul_n and_o though_o he_o many_o time_n vouchsafe_v but_o half_a smile_n and_o little_a glance_n yet_o in_o these_o reserve_a communication_n the_o soul_n find_v so_o much_o sweetness_n as_o engage_v it_o to_o a_o constant_a performance_n of_o duty_n all_o its_o day_n here_o say_v the_o soul_n god_n be_v wont_a to_o walk_v in_o his_o sanctuary_n here_o have_v i_o hear_v his_o voice_n here_o have_v i_o see_v his_o face_n his_o spirit_n have_v here_o breathe_v upon_o i_o his_o consolation_n have_v here_o refresh_v i_o and_o therefore_o here_o will_v i_o wait_v upon_o he_o as_o long_o as_o i_o live_v i_o remember_v well_o say_v the_o soul_n when_o in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n my_o heart_n have_v be_v fill_v by_o he_o pour_v out_o to_o he_o and_o accept_v with_o he_o i_o remember_v when_o he_o fill_v i_o first_o with_o sigh_n and_o then_o with_o song_n and_o both_o alike_o unutterable_a and_o therefore_o i_o will_v keep_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o duty_n wait_v for_o the_o further_a discovery_n and_o manifestation_n of_o my_o god_n unto_o i_o second_o as_o love_n to_o god_n so_o a_o regular_a self-love_n will_v much_o help_v and_o further_a our_o obedience_n and_o duty_n and_o then_o be_v
to_o procure_v it_o not_o to_o implant_v grace_n but_o to_o purchase_v it_o you_o can_v therefore_o sit_v down_o and_o say_v what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o my_o work_n christ_n have_v already_o do_v all_o my_o work_n for_o i_o to_o my_o hand_n no_o christ_n have_v do_v his_o own_o work_n he_o have_v do_v the_o work_n of_o a_o saviour_n and_o a_o surety_n but_o he_o never_o do_v the_o work_n of_o a_o sinner_n if_o christ_n by_o merit_v grace_n have_v bestow_v it_o upon_o thou_o and_o wrought_v it_o in_o thou_o then_o indeed_o there_o be_v no_o more_o require_v of_o thou_o to_o become_v holy_a but_o to_o cast_v back_o a_o lazy_a look_v to_o the_o purchase_n of_o jesus_n christ_n then_o thy_o sloth_n will_v have_v have_v some_o pretence_n why_o thou_o do_v not_o labour_v but_o this_o will_v not_o do_v our_o saviour_n command_v all_o man_n to_o seek_v first_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o 8.22_o mat._n 6.33_o act_n 8.22_o and_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v your_o old_a unchanged_a heart_n and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n christ_n require_v second_o salvation_n 2._o those_o that_o have_v grace_n must_v labour_v for_o salvation_n christ_n expect_v and_o require_v that_o those_o that_o have_v grace_n shall_v put_v forth_o the_o utmost_a strength_n and_o power_n thereof_o in_o labour_v after_o that_o salvation_n that_o he_o have_v purchase_v for_o they_o he_o have_v merit_v salvation_n for_o they_o but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v obtain_v by_o they_o through_o their_o own_o labour_n and_o industry_n be_v not_o that_o which_o christ_n have_v already_o do_v sufficient_a for_o they_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o he_o have_v reconcile_v they_o to_o god_n by_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o he_o have_v make_v their_o peace_n and_o procure_v their_o pardon_n for_o they_o but_o must_v christ_n repent_v and_o believe_v and_o obey_v for_o they_o this_o be_v not_o to_o make_v he_o a_o saviour_n but_o a_o drudge_n he_o have_v do_v what_o be_v meet_v and_o fit_a for_o a_o mediator_n to_o do_v he_o now_o require_v of_o we_o what_o be_v meet_v for_o sinner_n to_o do_v namely_o to_o believe_v to_o repent_v to_o be_v convert_v and_o to_o obey_v he_o now_o bid_v you_o wash_v and_o be_v clean_a and_o what_o will_v you_o have_v more_o will_v you_o have_v the_o great_a prophet_n come_v and_o strike_v off_o your_o leprosy_n and_o you_o only_o mark_v the_o cure_n and_o do_v nothing_o thereunto_o or_o be_v it_o indeed_o enough_o that_o salvation_n and_o happiness_n be_v purchase_v that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v make_v passable_a that_o the_o bolt_n and_o bar_n of_o the_o new_a jerusalem_n by_o christ_n be_v break_v off_o alas_o what_o of_o all_o this_o thou_o may_v still_o be_v as_o far_o from_o heaven_n and_o glory_n as_o ever_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o it_o still_o thou_o be_v as_o far_o from_o enter_v into_o heaven_n as_o ever_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o strive_v at_o the_o entrance_n into_o the_o strait_a gate_n it_o be_v therefore_o in_o vain_a that_o christ_n die_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a that_o thou_o be_v justify_v it_o be_v in_o vain_a that_o thou_o be_v adopt_a it_o be_v in_o vain_a that_o heaven_n be_v prepare_v for_o thou_o christ_n may_v keep_v heaven_n and_o glory_n and_o his_o crown_n and_o robe_n for_o ever_o to_o himself_o unless_o as_o he_o have_v purchase_v these_o great_a thing_n for_o his_o people_n so_o also_o he_o have_v purchase_v to_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n zealous_a of_o good_a work_n a_o people_n who_o by_o patient_a continuance_n in_o well_o do_v seek_v for_o glory_n and_o immortality_n and_o by_o that_o way_n obtain_v it_o thus_o we_o see_v christ_n do_v all_o for_o we_o be_v no_o excuse_n for_o our_o do_v nothing_o he_o have_v indeed_o do_v all_o for_o we_o that_o belong_v to_o he_o as_o a_o mediator_n merit_v and_o procure_v grace_n and_o salvation_n but_o he_o never_o intend_v to_o do_v all_o for_o we_o as_o to_o the_o convey_n of_o they_o to_o we_o and_o make_v of_o they_o we_o no_o that_o be_v still_o to_o be_v do_v by_o we_o and_o therefore_o though_o christ_n work_n alone_o be_v meritorious_a yet_o by_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n we_o must_v apply_v his_o merit_n and_o by_o the_o act_n of_o obedience_n confirm_v they_o to_o ourselves_o i_o may_v add_v also_o when_o christ_n be_v say_v to_o obey_v the_o law_n in_o our_o stead_n as_o well_o as_o to_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n though_o his_o bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o law_n by_o death_n do_v excuse_v and_o exempt_v we_o from_o suffer_v yet_o his_o obey_v of_o the_o law_n do_v not_o excuse_v our_o obedience_n unto_o the_o law_n christ_n obey_v the_o law_n in_o a_o far_o different_a respect_n to_o the_o obedience_n which_o be_v now_o require_v from_o we_o he_o obey_v as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n we_o only_o as_o a_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n if_o he_o have_v fail_v in_o the_o least_o tittle_n he_o can_v not_o have_v purchase_v life_n that_o be_v promise_v but_o we_o though_o we_o fall_v infinite_o short_a in_o our_o obedience_n may_v yet_o inherit_v that_o life_n that_o christ_n have_v purchase_v christ_n obedience_n be_v full_o perfect_a yet_o we_o be_v not_o derogatory_n thereunto_o because_o it_o proceed_v from_o other_o ground_n than_o christ_n do_v but_o i_o will_v not_o proceed_v further_o in_o this_o only_o conclude_v this_o answer_n with_o two_o practical_a thing_n in_o reference_n to_o this_o question_n first_o so_o work_v with_o that_o earnestness_n constancy_n and_o unweariedness_n in_o well_o do_v as_o if_o thy_o work_n alone_o be_v able_a to_o justify_v and_o save_v thou_o look_v with_o what_o affection_n and_o fervency_n you_o will_v pray_v if_o now_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v not_o obedience_n of_o as_o absolute_a necessity_n now_o as_o ever_o though_o not_o to_o the_o same_o end_n and_o purpose_n and_o since_o the_o end_n of_o our_o obedience_n be_v gracious_o change_v do_v not_o this_o change_n lie_v a_o far_a obligation_n of_o gratitude_n upon_o we_o to_o obey_v god_n who_o require_v it_o from_o we_o not_o as_o merit_v but_o as_o duty_n my_o soul_n burn_v not_o as_o clear_v and_o bright_a in_o love_n as_o my_o body_n in_o the_o flame_n it_o avail_v i_o nothing_o i_o burn_v only_o what_o be_v dead_a before_o and_o offer_v a_o carcase_n instead_o of_o a_o sacrifice_n there_o be_v no_o work_n or_o duty_n how_o specious_a soever_o that_o be_v of_o any_o profit_n to_o the_o soul_n if_o that_o work_n or_o duty_n have_v not_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o some_o grace_n or_o other_o express_v in_o it_o well_o then_o this_o be_v the_o first_o ground_n why_o work_n without_o grace_n be_v fruitless_a because_o they_o be_v doubtless_o fright_v many_o from_o engage_v therein_o oh_o it_o be_v a_o work_n very_o painful_a and_o laborious_a and_o this_o discourage_v they_o but_o know_v o_o sinner_n though_o it_o be_v grievous_a yet_o it_o be_v but_o short_a work_n it_o be_v to_o last_v no_o long_o than_o our_o frail_a short_a life_n do_v last_o and_o o_o how_o unreasonable_a be_v it_o to_o complain_v as_o most_o continue_v their_o motion_n orderly_o and_o regular_a when_o once_o they_o be_v set_v right_o well_o then_o whatever_o your_o trade_n be_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o trade_n of_o sin_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o trade_n of_o holiness_n you_o must_v be_v work_v at_o it_o and_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o religion_n and_o holiness_n

when_o we_o return_v duty_n for_o grace_n now_o be_v this_o nothing_o to_o enjoy_v fellowship_n and_o communion_n with_o the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n to_o be_v admit_v to_o he_o to_o walk_v and_o converse_v familiar_o with_o he_o and_o to_o enjoy_v he_o to_o see_v he_o who_o be_v invisible_a to_o lean_v upon_o he_o who_o be_v almighty_a to_o enjoy_v he_o who_o be_v infinite_a be_v all_o this_o nothing_o will_v not_o the_o soul_n of_o those_o who_o have_v by_o experience_n taste_v the_o sweetness_n of_o these_o thing_n cry_v out_o they_o be_v so_o excellent_a and_o need_v to_o be_v frequent_o press_v upon_o the_o conscience_n of_o wicked_a man_n they_o often_o hear_v unto_o what_o a_o state_n of_o weakness_n sin_n have_v reduce_v they_o and_o that_o without_o preparation_n that_o be_v usual_o wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n antecedent_o or_o before_o true_a grace_n such_o be_v legal_a conviction_n and_o contrition_n a_o sad_a sight_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o deep_a sorrow_n for_o it_o together_o with_o strong_a resolution_n and_o purpose_n against_o it_o with_o strong_a desire_n after_o grace_n and_o holiness_n and_o the_o like_a and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v because_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v short_a of_o grace_n and_o whatever_o be_v short_a of_o true_a grace_n fall_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o nature_n and_o freewill_n which_o be_v common_a unto_o all_o man_n which_o though_o it_o be_v indeed_o wound_v and_o maim_v yet_o may_v make_v shift_n to_o go_v so_o far_o as_o this_o come_v to_o true_a grace_n now_o be_v only_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n and_o not_o the_o production_n of_o nature_n or_o freewill_n wherefore_o after_o all_o this_o preparation_n be_v wrought_v a_o sinner_n can_v no_o more_o work_v grace_n in_o himself_o than_o he_o can_v before_o yet_o be_v he_o now_o near_o to_o grace_n and_o in_o a_o great_a probability_n of_o it_o than_o he_o be_v before_o and_o there_o be_v none_o
