and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n that_o if_o it_o be_v hinder_v in_o its_o moving_n and_o work_n it_o die_v even_o as_o the_o fire_n go_v out_o if_o it_o be_v stop_v from_o burn_a and_o the_o water_n die_v if_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o run_v beside_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o well_o please_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v diligent_a in_o good_a work_n through_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n that_o he_o do_v reward_v it_o with_o a_o further_a measure_n and_o take_v delight_n to_o water_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v fruitful_a therein_o the_o more_o abundant_o with_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o spirit_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n do_v his_o garden_n which_o yield_v he_o good_a fruit_n but_o the_o vine-yard_n which_o bring_v not_o forth_o good_a grape_n but_o the_o sour_a and_o bitter_a grape_n of_o evil_a work_n see_v what_o he_o do_v to_o it_o isa._n 5._o i_o will_v lay_v it_o waste_v say_v the_o lord_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v prune_v nor_o dig_v etc._n etc._n i_o will_v also_o command_v the_o cloud_n that_o they_o rain_v no_o rain_n upon_o it_o but_o it_o may_v be_v say_v be_v not_o faith_n a_o work_n and_o be_v not_o believe_v work_v and_o yet_o thou_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o first_o beginning_n or_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v unto_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n 1._o receptive_a or_o receive_v 2._o operative_a or_o work_v now_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o attain_v unto_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n through_o the_o property_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v opperative_a but_o through_o that_o which_o be_v receptive_a and_o lest_o any_o shall_v think_v this_o distinction_n too_o nice_a or_o subtle_a i_o shall_v prove_v it_o from_o the_o express_a word_n of_o scripture_n 1._o that_o faith_n be_v operative_a be_v clear_a from_o that_o scripture_n where_o it_o be_v say_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o do_v a_o great_a many_o good_a thing_n in_o many_o other_o place_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v receptive_a i_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o then_o joh._n 1.12_o for_o proof_n to_o as_o many_o as_o receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o receive_v christ_n be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v even_o say_v he_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n so_o here_o be_v the_o receptive_a faith_n for_o receptive_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v in_o english_a receive_v nor_o be_v there_o many_o example_n want_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o show_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v the_o receptive_a power_n when_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o the_o needle_n of_o the_o compass_n must_v first_o receive_v its_o virtue_n from_o the_o load_n stone_n be_v touch_v with_o it_o before_o it_o can_v direct_v itself_o towards_o the_o pole_n 2._o the_o branch_n that_o be_v cutoff_a from_o its_o own_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o first_o receive_v life_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o stock_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o drink_v it_o in_o before_o it_o proceed_v to_o send_v forth_o either_o leaf_n or_o flourish_n or_o fruit_n 3._o the_o womb_n first_o receive_v seed_n before_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n in_o it_o proceed_v in_o their_o operation_n for_o its_o conception_n and_o formation_n 4._o the_o stomach_n first_o receive_v the_o meat_n into_o it_o before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n therein_o it_o digest_v and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o indeed_o this_o last_o example_n do_v with_o great_a clearness_n hold_v forth_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n for_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n through_o hunger_n be_v even_o faint_a and_o as_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o yet_o receive_v a_o little_a food_n the_o virtue_n of_o it_o do_v sudden_o revive_v he_o and_o give_v he_o natural_a strength_n whereby_o he_o may_v do_v and_o work_v as_o former_o and_o thus_o the_o soul_n receive_v and_o drink_v in_o that_o divine_a virtue_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o the_o divine_a seed_n be_v thereby_o quicken_v and_o strengthen_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n all_o which_o example_n and_o many_o more_o which_o can_v be_v adduce_v prove_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v a_o receptive_a power_n and_o not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a and_o to_o this_o purpose_n these_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v observable_a he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o say_v he_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o shall_v he_o live_v which_o import_v that_o a_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v dead_a may_v believe_v that_o be_v to_o say_v receive_v the_o seed_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n into_o it_o for_o this_o divine_a principle_n be_v of_o a_o insinuate_a and_o penetrate_a nature_n it_o do_v make_v way_n for_o its_o own_o reception_n in_o the_o heart_n insinuate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v wind_v itself_o thereinto_o as_o the_o fire_n do_v into_o wood_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n but_o now_o when_o this_o principle_n do_v labour_n to_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o power_n the_o soul_n may_v resist_v and_o do_v so_o many_o time_n whereby_o it_o remain_v dead_a though_o otherwise_o it_o may_v have_v live_v by_o give_v way_n unto_o or_o receive_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o seed_n and_o thus_o that_o subtle_a objection_n may_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v thus_o believe_v or_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o soul_n that_o live_v a_o spiritual_a life_n for_o as_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v walk_v or_o move_v so_o nor_o can_v a_o dead_a soul_n believe_v from_o this_o it_o be_v infer_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o live_v before_o it_o can_v believe_v or_o have_v faith_n and_o consequent_o that_o none_o other_o can_v have_v faith_n but_o they_o who_o be_v already_o partaker_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v while_o yet_o you_o grant_v all_o man_n be_v not_o spiritual_o alive_a but_o this_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o former_a distinction_n of_o the_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n therefore_o unto_o that_o proposition_n on_o which_o the_o whole_a strength_n of_o the_o objection_n lie_v viz._n that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n i_o thus_o answer_v that_o the_o operative_a faith_n or_o believe_v be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v i_o grant_v but_o as_o for_o the_o receptive_a property_n of_o faith_n through_o it_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n by_o which_o it_o come_v to_o indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v conceive_v to_o live_v spiritual_o before_o the_o receptive_a faith_n this_o receptive_a faith_n be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v or_o turn_v or_o be_v convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o lord_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o principle_n in_o it_o and_o to_o the_o divine_a presence_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n therein_o whereof_o i_o have_v say_v somewhat_o chap._n 4._o and_o whether_o the_o soul_n be_v suppose_v only_o to_o be_v passive_a in_o this_o receptive_a faith_n or_o partly_o passive_a and_o partly_o active_a the_o matter_n be_v not_o much_o provide_v it_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o it_o can_v so_o much_o as_o believe_v even_o according_a to_o the_o receptive_a faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v enable_v and_o assist_v after_o a_o supernatural_a manner_n by_o the_o lord_n also_o some_o may_v object_v this_o doctrine_n seem_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o hold_v when_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o and_o that_o no_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n answ._n there_o be_v no_o contrariety_n herein_o for_o when_o we_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o we_o understand_v not_o this_o simple_o and_o absolute_o
i_o shall_v be_v turn_v but_o now_o many_o when_o the_o lord_n touch_v they_o and_o by_o his_o touch_n infuse_v a_o certain_a secret_a virtue_n sufficient_a to_o turn_v they_o or_o whereby_o they_o may_v turn_v yea_o when_o he_o draw_v and_o pull_v they_o very_o sensible_o do_v resist_v and_o continue_v in_o their_o aversion_n and_o of_o such_o the_o scripture_n say_v they_o draw_v back_o and_o that_o they_o resist_v the_o truth_n and_o resist_v the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o damnation_n be_v just_a see_v he_o will_v have_v heal_v they_o but_o they_o refuse_v be_v not_o therefore_o discourage_v or_o drive_v into_o despair_n because_o thou_o find_v such_o weakness_n and_o inability_n to_o convert_v thy_o soul_n unto_o god_n as_o aforesaid_a nor_o yet_o because_o thou_o find_v so_o little_a virtue_n or_o power_n administer_v unto_o thou_o from_o the_o divine_a influence_n for_o thy_o enable_v for_o by_o what_o be_v from_o the_o lord_n administer_v unto_o thou_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o thou_o to_o convert_v though_o at_o first_o and_o for_o a_o considerable_a time_n afterward_o it_o will_v be_v difficult_a for_o straight_o be_v the_o gate_n and_o narrow_a be_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v unto_o life_n this_o convert_v the_o soul_n after_o the_o manner_n declare_v unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n be_v the_o true_a faith_n and_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o christ_n so_o much_o require_v in_o scripture_n in_o order_n unto_o salvation_n which_o be_v the_o soul_n be_v come_v unto_o god_n and_o christ_n as_o he_o say_v come_v unto_o i_o etc._n etc._n and_o the_o soul_n be_v take_v hold_n of_o he_o and_o cleave_v unto_o he_o and_o indeed_o the_o latin_a word_n credo_fw-la do_v significant_o express_v it_o which_o be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v a_o giving_z the_o heart_n unto_o god_n and_o how_o do_v a_o man_n give_v his_o heart_n unto_o he_o but_o by_o turn_v it_o towards_o he_o which_o conversion_n or_o believe_v be_v not_o simple_o of_o one_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o of_o both_o viz._n the_o understanding_n and_o will_n yea_o of_o the_o whole_a soul_n with_o all_o its_o power_n when_o the_o conversion_n be_v through_o and_o total_a chap._n iii_o show_v how_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n towards_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o effect_n which_o follow_v at_o first_o thereupon_o as_o also_o of_o the_o inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n it_o usual_o meet_v with_o therein_o now_o after_o the_o soul_n have_v get_v itself_o convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o divine_a influence_n and_o assistance_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n present_v therein_o than_o it_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a that_o it_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o the_o lord_n who_o by_o his_o divine_a grace_n have_v enable_v it_o to_o convert_v after_o the_o former_a manner_n do_v and_o will_v also_o enable_v it_o to_o persevere_v therein_o for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o application_n unto_o the_o divine_a word_n light_n and_o life_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n that_o it_o come_v to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o bless_a effect_n thereof_o a_o outward_a example_n whereof_o we_o have_v very_o plain_a in_o our_o hold_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o fire_n which_o if_o sudden_o we_o remove_v again_o it_o scarce_o produce_v any_o effect_n in_o it_o as_o if_o we_o will_v purify_v or_o refine_v any_o metal_n from_o its_o dross_n by_o the_o fire_n we_o must_v not_o only_o apply_v it_o intimate_o to_o the_o fire_n but_o hold_v it_o in_o it_o a_o good_a time_n that_o it_o may_v melt_v and_o the_o dross_n may_v separate_v from_o it_o so_o thou_o must_v not_o only_o turn_v thy_o soul_n to_o this_o fire_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o but_o must_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o so_o do_v and_o by_o that_o mean_v thou_o will_v quick_o begin_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o its_o bless_a effect_n some_o of_o which_o effect_n as_o they_o follow_v at_o first_o upon_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v unto_o this_o divine_a principle_n i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o mention_v as_o first_o thou_o will_v by_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o receive_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o full_a convincement_n and_o discovery_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o sinful_a pollute_a nature_n then_o former_o so_o that_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a and_o how_o thou_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o it_o as_o with_o a_o thick_a cloud_n which_o hinder_v thou_o from_o enjoy_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a presence_n of_o god_n yea_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o feel_v thy_o poor_a soul_n embody_a or_o incorporate_v in_o a_o very_a body_n of_o sin_n have_v many_o member_n and_o how_o near_o and_o dear_o they_o be_v unto_o thou_o some_o as_o a_o right_a eye_n some_o as_o a_o right_a hand_n etc._n etc._n then_o thou_o will_v know_v that_o such_o thing_n be_v sin_n which_o have_v place_n in_o thou_o more_o than_o by_o any_o word_n even_o of_o scripture_n for_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o little_a seed_n will_v great_o convince_v thou_o thereof_o and_o let_v thou_o see_v thy_o sin_n and_o the_o nature_n or_o root_n that_o bring_v they_o forth_o in_o their_o monstrous_a and_o hellish_a form_n and_o shape_n ii_o thou_o will_v also_o feel_v and_o perceive_v how_o the_o displeasure_n wrath_n and_o indignation_n of_o god_n be_v against_o every_o sin_n in_o thou_o even_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n the_o whole_a body_n of_o it_o with_o all_o its_o member_n root_n and_o fruit_n and_o branch_n and_o how_o also_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v against_o man_n because_o of_o sin_n to_o which_o they_o be_v join_v and_o so_o thou_o will_v find_v how_o all_o man_n in_o a_o sinful_a and_o unrenewed_a condition_n be_v miserable_a as_o be_v under_o the_o wrath_n and_o displeasure_n of_o god_n and_o how_o sin_n be_v the_o root_n and_o fountain_n of_o the_o whole_a misery_n of_o man_n and_o how_o man_n stand_v before_o god_n in_o a_o state_n of_o judgement_n and_o condemnation_n while_o in_o sin_n embody_a and_o drown_v in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n iii_o thou_o will_v have_v occasion_n to_o observe_v the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n after_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n which_o will_v raise_v in_o thy_o mind_n amaze_a and_o astonish_a thought_n whereby_o thou_o will_v wonder_v and_o admire_v that_o thou_o be_v not_o consume_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o this_o wrath_n yea_o than_o thou_o will_v be_v make_v to_o see_v somewhat_o like_o that_o of_o moses_n how_o the_o fire_n burn_v in_o the_o bâ—sh_n and_o it_o be_v not_o consume_v iv._o thou_o will_v find_v that_o this_o fire_n be_v only_o send_v down_o from_o heaven_n to_o burn_v and_o consume_v that_o sin_n and_o purge_v away_o thy_o filthiness_n and_o dross_n v._o and_o so_o as_o thou_o remain_v and_o continue_v introvert_v or_o convert_v towards_o that_o divine_a principle_n aforesaid_a thou_o will_v find_v it_o as_o a_o sword_n a_o fire_n and_o a_o hammer_n in_o thou_o knock_v down_o and_o kill_v and_o consume_v this_o body_n of_o sin_n with_o its_o member_n yea_o a_o flame_n will_v issue_v forth_o from_o it_o and_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n kill_v and_o burn_v so_o far_o as_o it_o enter_v vi_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o this_o heavenly_a fire_n thou_o will_v find_v a_o very_a sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n in_o thy_o inward_a man_n as_o very_o as_o if_o the_o outward_a fire_n be_v burn_v in_o thy_o outward_a body_n so_o thou_o may_v conceive_v how_o thou_o will_v be_v affect_v if_o the_o tender_a and_o most_o sensible_a part_n of_o thy_o outward_a body_n be_v hold_v close_o unto_o a_o burn_a flame_n even_o such_o sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n will_v thou_o find_v inward_o for_o indeed_o thy_o soul_n dwell_v as_o real_o in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v unite_v with_o it_o as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o outward_a body_n therefore_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o whatever_o hurt_v it_o and_o findeth_z pain_n till_o it_o have_v put_v it_o off_o and_o then_o it_o have_v no_o more_o sympathy_n with_o it_o vii_o great_a fear_n and_o terror_n will_v take_v hold_n upon_o thou_o because_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o thou_o will_v have_v occasion_n inward_o to_o observe_v the_o like_a whereof_o before_o thou_o be_v never_o therein_o for_o a_o time_n chap._n v._n show_v how_o the_o soul_n after_o its_o conversion_n unto_o god_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n for_o some_o small_a time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a and_o divine_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o some_o beginning_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o regeneration_n by_o which_o it_o attain_v unto_o some_o measure_n of_o union_n with_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o thereby_o be_v put_v in_o some_o capacity_n for_o operative_a exercise_n of_o holiness_n unto_o which_o it_o ought_v to_o apply_v and_o that_o any_o other_o way_n of_o enter_v upon_o these_o exercise_n be_v but_o freigned_a and_o hypocritical_a operari_fw-la sequitur_fw-la esse_fw-la that_o be_v to_o say_v work_v follow_v be_v be_v a_o maxim_n in_o natural_n it_o hold_v as_o much_o in_o spiritual_n so_o that_o before_o a_o man_n can_v do_v the_o work_n of_o holiness_n he_o must_v be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o holiness_n and_o that_o not_o in_o a_o notion_n or_o imagination_n but_o in_o substance_n or_o be_v and_o before_o that_o a_o man_n can_v work_v his_o work_n in_o god_n he_o must_v have_v a_o be_v in_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n through_o his_o attain_v a_o union_n with_o he_o for_o even_o as_o the_o body_n can_v cooperate_v with_o the_o soul_n in_o natural_a action_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o soul_n life_n and_o be_v in_o union_n with_o it_o so_o nor_o can_v the_o soul_n cooperate_v with_o god_n in_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a action_n till_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o his_o life_n and_o attain_v unto_o some_o union_n with_o he_o now_o i_o have_v show_v above_o that_o the_o soul_n through_o its_o convert_n unto_o god_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o very_a small_a time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o some_o beginning_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o regeneration_n for_o when_o the_o soul_n convert_v unto_o god_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o persist_v be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o little_a therein_o it_o beginning_n to_o feel_v the_o divine_a fire_n to_o enkindle_v in_o it_o in_o the_o divine_a seed_n which_o mortify_v and_o purify_v some_o place_n in_o the_o heart_n whereby_o common_a practice_n but_o also_o the_o common_a principle_n that_o go_v currant_n among_o they_o whereby_o they_o set_v the_o unbeliever_n and_o ungodly_a who_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o taste_v of_o the_o least_o beginning_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o repentance_n upon_o work_v and_o operative_a exercise_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n such_o as_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o sing_v psalm_n which_o be_v holy_a and_o spiritual_a exercise_n and_o can_v only_o be_v perform_v by_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o no_o otherwise_o their_o principle_n be_v this_o that_o even_o unbeliever_n and_o ungodly_a who_o have_v not_o the_o least_o measure_n or_o grain_n of_o save_a faith_n and_o holiness_n shall_v pray_v and_o sing_v psalm_n in_o the_o very_a state_n and_o frame_n they_o be_v in_o and_o that_o this_o be_v a_o probable_a way_n to_o attain_v unto_o holiness_n wrest_v and_o abuse_v that_o scripture_n to_o prove_v it_o by_o the_o father_n will_v give_v the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o they_o who_o ask_v he_o ask_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v but_o it_o be_v neither_o here_o nor_o elsewhere_o say_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o father_n will_v give_v it_o to_o they_o who_o ask_v in_o unbelief_n but_o plain_a contrary_a james_n say_v let_v not_o he_o that_o ask_v not_o in_o faith_n think_v that_o he_o shall_v receive_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o lord_n indeed_o i_o willing_o proceed_v from_o the_o true_a and_o real_a power_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n even_o as_o sing_v and_o write_v natural_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o power_n of_o a_o natural_a life_n and_o beside_o they_o most_o lamentable_o cheat_v their_o own_o soul_n for_o by_o these_o and_o such_o like_a operative_a exercise_n and_o practice_n which_o be_v but_o hypocritical_a formality_n and_o show_n as_o be_v say_v and_o through_o their_o continuance_n therein_o they_o acquire_v a_o certain_a natural_a habit_n or_o disposition_n more_o and_o more_o and_o easy_o and_o fine_o to_o perform_v they_o which_o natural_a habit_n they_o set_v up_o in_o their_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v as_o the_o great_a power_n of_o god_n or_o godliness_n and_o many_o no_o doubt_n apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v so_o so_o that_o when_o at_o any_o time_n they_o be_v act_v or_o enable_v to_o perform_v such_o and_o the_o like_a exercise_n somewhat_o more_o fine_o and_o easy_o than_o at_o first_o and_o with_o some_o heat_n perhaps_o in_o the_o imagination_n and_o inferior_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n they_o impuâ—e_v it_o to_o the_o very_a principle_n of_o godliness_n and_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o grow_v teach_v they_o be_v nothing_o acquaint_v with_o these_o way_n of_o inward_a conversion_n or_o recollection_n of_o mind_n unto_o a_o divine_a principle_n in_o their_o soul_n objective_o present_a never_o expect_v nor_o look_v after_o it_o as_o judge_v it_o to_o be_v cease_v if_o so_o than_o i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n betwixt_o their_o pray_n or_o plough_v or_o write_v or_o sing_v common_a musical_a song_n or_o common_a purpose_n for_o the_o power_n of_o do_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v but_o a_o habit_n acquire_v by_o natural_a work_n for_o such_o kind_n of_o action_n as_o to_o plough_v write_v sing_v require_v no_o other_o principle_n but_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o a_o man_n which_o at_o the_o first_o can_v begin_v to_o do_v a_o little_a and_o so_o by_o degree_n through_o repeat_v act_n acquire_v a_o habit_n which_o become_v a_o power_n in_o they_o to_o enable_v they_o the_o more_o ready_o and_o fine_o to_o perform_v they_o and_o with_o great_a ease_n a_o second_o instance_n be_v this_o that_o this_o power_n whereby_o they_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o the_o operative_a exercise_n as_o in_o pray_v sing_v preach_a or_o the_o like_a they_o can_v use_v in_o their_o own_o will_n and_o time_n they_o have_v it_o whole_o at_o their_o own_o dispose_n and_o can_v command_v it_o as_o they_o list_v pray_v when_o they_o will_v meditate_v and_o preach_v when_o they_o will_v which_o be_v a_o infallible_a instance_n that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o habit_n mere_o acquire_v by_o the_o onâ—y_a work_n
of_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o the_o supernatural_a power_n to_o do_v these_o thing_n be_v never_o subject_a unto_o man_n command_n and_o will_n but_o alone_o unto_o the_o will_n this_o that_o this_o power_n in_o they_o judge_v by_o they_o to_o be_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o its_o great_a growth_n and_o height_n be_v very_o compatible_a and_o consistant_fw-la with_o many_o evil_a thought_n desire_n word_n and_o action_n yea_o it_o can_v very_o easy_o be_v reconcile_v unto_o many_o sin_n and_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o appearance_n of_o enmity_n at_o such_o sin_n as_o be_v not_o contrary_a unto_o these_o act_n which_o have_v produce_v it_o as_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o a_o man_n who_o have_v get_v a_o strong_a habit_n or_o custom_n of_o pray_v twice_o or_o thrice_o a_o day_n if_o he_o omit_v this_o practice_n at_o a_o time_n how_o will_v he_o be_v trouble_v for_o it_o and_o what_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o trouble_n his_o habit_n strong_o incline_v he_o to_o it_o and_o give_v he_o no_o peace_n nor_o rest_n till_o it_o be_v do_v and_o this_o inclination_n he_o may_v ready_o judge_v to_o be_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereas_o it_o be_v but_o from_o his_o own_o habit_n and_o so_o be_v the_o more_o trouble_v as_o suppose_v he_o resist_v the_o spirit_n by_o this_o forbearance_n but_o now_o if_o he_o omit_v the_o necessary_a performance_n of_o other_o thing_n he_o be_v not_o accustom_v to_o he_o will_v not_o be_v trouble_v at_o all_o and_o thus_o how_o many_o care_v not_o to_o omit_v the_o duty_n of_o faithfulness_n and_o righteousness_n towards_o their_o neighbour_n who_o be_v at_o a_o great_a care_n to_o say_v their_o prayer_n but_o very_o that_o power_n in_o man_n which_o incline_v he_o to_o some_o thing_n good_a in_o themselves_o and_o not_o to_o all_o other_o good_a thing_n and_o practice_n and_o which_o be_v not_o as_o a_o fire_n a_o sword_n and_o a_o hammer_n in_o he_o against_o every_o evil_a way_n and_o work_v yea_o the_o least_o evil_a motion_n in_o the_o mind_n be_v not_o the_o true_a power_n of_o godliness_n it_o may_v well_o be_v a_o habit_n as_o aforesaid_a yet_o by_o what_o be_v say_v let_v none_o suppose_v that_o i_o judge_v all_o who_o have_v not_o in_o such_o a_o clear_a distinct_a and_o explicit_a way_n be_v acquaint_v with_o these_o aforesaid_a step_n of_o inward_a conversion_n to_o the_o light_n continuance_n therein_o and_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n abovementioned_a in_o the_o say_a continuance_n as_o if_o they_o be_v utter_o devoid_a of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n have_v nothing_o but_o a_o natural_a habit_n in_o the_o room_n of_o it_o for_o as_o i_o be_o full_o persuade_v that_o many_o or_o most_o have_v no_o other_o but_o the_o natural_a habit_n so_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v some_o hide_a one_o hide_v many_o way_n who_o be_v true_o partaker_n of_o some_o measure_n of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n which_o at_o time_n stir_v and_o move_v hidden_o in_o they_o and_o by_o which_o they_o act_n divers_a practice_n of_o religion_n as_o by_o a_o certain_a secret_a instinct_n as_o it_o be_v unknown_a to_o themselves_o but_o they_o be_v such_o babe_n poor_a soul_n who_o know_v not_o the_o right_a hand_n from_o the_o left_a that_o be_v to_o say_v can_v distinguish_v plain_o betwixt_o the_o true_a power_n of_o godliness_n and_o that_o which_o be_v but_o the_o natural_a habit_n and_o so_o act_v sometime_o from_o the_o one_o and_o sometime_o from_o the_o other_o yea_o more_o from_o the_o habit_n then_o from_o the_o true_a power_n ten_o or_o a_o hundred_o to_o one_o perhaps_o and_o many_o time_n that_o which_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o judge_n to_o be_v the_o true_a power_n be_v but_o the_o natural_a habit_n for_o the_o habit_n be_v great_a and_o strong_a in_o they_o perhaps_o but_o the_o true_a power_n be_v a_o weak_a and_o tender_a thing_n even_o as_o a_o smoke_a flax_n and_o bruise_a reed_n to_o which_o the_o habit_n be_v a_o enemy_n always_o in_o its_o act_n and_o the_o devil_n seat_v himself_o in_o the_o habit_n and_o fight_v against_o the_o true_a power_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o act_n of_o the_o habit_n he_o concur_v therewith_o and_o true_o ere_o the_o true_a power_n can_v become_v strong_a in_o the_o soul_n so_o as_o to_o have_v the_o dominion_n the_o habit_n or_o habitual_a power_n must_v be_v break_v down_o for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o image_n of_o the_o beast_n and_o glory_n to_o the_o lord_n for_o ever_o who_o be_v give_v to_o a_o remnant_n the_o victory_n over_o this_o image_n and_o raise_v up_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n over_o it_o to_o its_o bruise_v and_o destroy_v now_o albeit_o such_o soul_n have_v not_o as_o to_o a_o distinct_a reflection_n and_o knowledge_n of_o the_o way_n of_o their_o attain_n unto_o these_o small_a beginning_n of_o the_o true_a power_n of_o holiness_n pass_v through_o these_o step_n of_o inward_a recollection_n conversion_n passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n yet_o after_o some_o secret_a and_o hide_a manner_n unknown_a to_o themselves_o in_o some_o measure_n they_o have_v no_o doubt_n flid_a through_o they_o the_o darkness_n so_o far_o prevail_v that_o they_o can_v not_o observe_v their_o way_n but_o sure_o where_o one_o have_v get_v through_o this_o way_n a_o thousand_o have_v miss_v stick_v at_o the_o entrance_n and_o never_o get_v true_o into_o it_o therefore_o i_o may_v warrantable_o say_v the_o want_n of_o the_o plain_a and_o clear_a understanding_n of_o these_o step_n have_v make_v the_o way_n unto_o holiness_n if_o not_o altogether_o impossible_a yet_o very_o difficult_a and_o much_o more_o than_o it_o be_v in_o deed_n and_o in_o truth_n chap._n vi_o wherein_o divers_a thing_n needful_a to_o be_v know_v by_o they_o who_o do_v or_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n in_o relation_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o conversion_n regeneration_n of_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o holiness_n and_o of_o union_n with_o god_n be_v open_v and_o the_o gross_a mistake_n of_o most_o professor_n touch_v these_o thing_n discover_v and_o clear_v great_a and_o woeful_a have_v be_v the_o mistake_n and_o misconception_n of_o the_o professor_n whether_o of_o one_o sort_n or_o another_o touch_v these_o thing_n which_o have_v occasion_v great_a hurt_n and_o impediment_n both_o unto_o their_o entrance_n into_o holiness_n and_o progress_n therein_o the_o clear_n of_o which_o will_v be_v of_o great_a use_n and_o profit_n therefore_o i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o declear_a somewhat_o touch_v they_o according_a to_o the_o understanding_n give_v i_o of_o god_n not_o that_o any_o thing_n say_v by_o i_o can_v suffice_v simple_o to_o the_o clear_n of_o any_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n who_o only_o can_v do_v that_o yet_o the_o declaration_n hereof_o may_v be_v a_o occasion_n as_o the_o lord_n shall_v bless_v it_o for_o they_o to_o weigh_v and_o consider_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o true_a light_n whereby_o they_o may_v come_v true_o to_o judge_n of_o they_o i._o as_o touch_v conversion_n and_o regeneration_n it_o be_v suppose_v simple_o to_o consist_v in_o the_o lord_n be_v infuse_v certain_a supernatural_a habit_n of_o grace_n into_o the_o soul_n which_o sometime_o they_o express_v under_o this_o term_n the_o seed_n of_o grace_n or_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n so_o that_o that_o they_o judge_v that_o instant_o at_o the_o infuse_v of_o this_o seed_n the_o soul_n be_v convert_v and_o that_o all_o these_o soul_n into_o who_o this_o seed_n be_v infuse_v be_v instant_o convert_v and_o regenerate_v which_o be_v a_o gross_a error_n ii_o they_o suppose_v that_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n be_v whole_o do_v in_o a_o instant_n and_o that_o at_o the_o very_a first_o instant_n the_o seed_n spread_v itself_o or_o be_v spread_v and_o diffuse_v through_o every_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n whole_o which_o be_v another_o great_a error_n iii_o they_o suppose_v that_o god_n work_v so_o irresistible_o in_o all_o man_n in_o who_o this_o seed_n be_v sow_v or_o infuse_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o resist_v but_o convert_v or_o regenerate_v they_o must_v be_v which_o be_v a_o three_o for_o though_o the_o lord_n can_v so_o work_v or_o may_v do_v so_o in_o some_o yet_o it_o be_v certain_a he_o do_v not_o so_o in_o all_o but_o in_o
little_a and_o diminutive_a that_o though_o they_o have_v room_n they_o can_v not_o perform_v the_o operation_n of_o their_o nature_n till_o by_o their_o more_o through_o generation_n and_o formation_n they_o be_v increase_v and_o augment_v and_o thus_o the_o little_a embryo_n or_o conception_n in_o the_o womb_n be_v it_o of_o man_n or_o beast_n can_v perform_v the_o operation_n of_o a_o man_n or_o beast_n nay_o though_o the_o child_n be_v bear_v and_o come_v into_o the_o world_n how_o little_a do_v the_o power_n of_o manhood_n appear_v in_o it_o but_o as_o the_o body_n of_o the_o child_n grow_v up_o the_o power_n of_o manhood_n do_v more_o and_o more_o appear_v as_o of_o understanding_n speech_n memory_n and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o in_o some_o manner_n as_o to_o the_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a seed_n or_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o convert_v unto_o it_o as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o permit_v to_o take_v root_n and_o plant_v itself_o in_o the_o soul_n its_o life_n and_o power_n will_v not_o be_v generate_v or_o raise_v up_o and_o so_o the_o spiritual_a generation_n of_o the_o seed_n be_v the_o raise_n up_o of_o its_o life_n and_o power_n and_o bring_v they_o into_o manifestation_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o the_o soul_n drink_v in_o it_o come_v to_o be_v regenerate_v or_o renew_v thereby_o and_o still_o more_o and_o more_o according_a to_o the_o growth_n and_o increase_n of_o the_o seed_n endue_v therewith_o now_o the_o power_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n which_o proceed_v or_o flow_v from_o its_o life_n and_o spirit_n be_v these_o noble_a and_o heroic_a christian_a virtue_n indue_a both_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n yea_o and_o all_o the_o other_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n according_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o each_o such_o as_o love_v joy_n peace_n gentleness_n meekness_n temperance_n righteousness_n fortitude_n patience_n and_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o understanding_n practice_n of_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n which_o power_n and_o the_o life_n which_o be_v their_o root_n be_v not_o in_o all_o man_n though_o the_o seed_n of_o they_o be_v in_o all_o as_o be_v say_v and_o be_v elsewhere_o demonstrate_v now_o it_o be_v through_o the_o generation_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o in_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o birth_n that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o have_v union_n with_o god_n for_o the_o divine_a birth_n with_o the_o life_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v that_o noble_a chain_n which_o tie_v and_o join_v the_o soul_n unto_o god_n be_v of_o a_o middle_n or_o mean_a nature_n betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o the_o more_o apt_a for_o such_o a_o effect_n for_o as_o it_o be_v inferior_a unto_o the_o godhead_n so_o be_v be_v superior_a unto_o the_o soul_n be_v christ_n the_o image_n of_o god_n according_a to_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v and_o by_o it_o ennoble_a and_o dignify_v and_o the_o excellency_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n and_o seed_n above_o the_o soul_n appear_v great_o in_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o soul_n can_v corrupt_v and_o degenerate_a with_o all_o its_o gower_n this_o holy_a life_n can_v never_o in_o the_o least_o admit_v of_o any_o corruption_n for_o it_o ever_o abhor_v all_o sin_n it_o may_v indeed_o be_v kill_v or_o crucify_v by_o it_o but_o never_o corrupt_v and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o most_o fit_a medium_n or_o mean_v to_o unite_v the_o soul_n unto_o god_n and_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n thereof_o be_v as_o so_o many_o chain_n whereby_o the_o lord_n do_v unite_v the_o pure_a and_o righteous_a soul_n unto_o he_o you_o must_v understand_v therefore_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o god_n be_v not_o simple_o immediate_a but_o mediate_a through_o this_o seed_n for_o no_o man_n nor_o soul_n save_v jesus_n christ_n alone_o by_o his_o soul_n and_o manhood_n conceive_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o womb_n of_o the_o virgin_n for_o ever_o this_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o the_o seed_n and_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o through_o which_o the_o soul_n become_v unite_v unto_o god_n be_v gradual_a and_o become_v more_o and_o more_o intimate_a and_o near_a as_o the_o soul_n advance_v in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o until_o the_o leaven_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n have_v diffuse_v its_o pure_a virtue_n through_o the_o whole_a soul_n and_o all_o its_o power_n the_o union_n can_v be_v total_a nor_o through_o but_o in_o part_n even_o until_o all_o sin_n and_o iniquity_n be_v wrought_v out_o for_o there_o can_v be_v no_o union_n with_o that_o which_o be_v holy_a with_o that_o which_o be_v unholy_a wherefore_o if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v purify_v only_o that_o part_n receive_v union_n with_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o with_o god_n therein_o therefore_o the_o first_o step_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o soul_n conversion_n unto_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n therein_o be_v not_o to_o speak_v proper_o union_n for_o the_o soul_n at_o its_o first_o step_n of_o conversion_n bring_v itself_o or_o convert_v unto_o god_n as_o it_o be_v viz._n all_o filthy_a and_o unclean_a with_o sin_n yea_o it_o bring_v its_o sin_n and_o sinful_a member_n unto_o god_n that_o he_o may_v kindle_v his_o fire_n in_o they_o for_o their_o destruction_n but_o there_o be_v no_o union_n until_o the_o soul_n be_v cleanse_v in_o some_o measure_n but_o when_o the_o soul_n convert_v unto_o god_n in_o that_o part_n or_o measure_n of_o it_o which_o be_v purify_v its_o conversion_n so_o far_o may_v be_v call_v and_o be_v true_o a_o union_n with_o god_n furthermore_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v that_o the_o soul_n union_n with_o god_n consist_v not_o simple_o in_o mere_a act_n as_o when_o it_o exercise_v act_n of_o conversion_n towards_o god_n these_o and_o other_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n do_v contribute_v and_o conduce_v unto_o this_o union_n and_o beget_v it_o yet_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o more_o constant_a and_o permanent_a union_n with_o god_n then_o by_o act_n whether_o of_o one_o or_o all_o its_o power_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n union_n consist_v only_o in_o act_n then_o when_o it_o do_v not_o act_n but_o be_v whole_o suspend_v in_o its_o act_n towards_o god_n the_o union_n shall_v cease_v which_o be_v false_a for_o when_o a_o righteous_a man_n sleep_v so_o that_o perhaps_o his_o soul_n exercise_v no_o act_n yet_o his_o union_n remain_v with_o he_o buâ—_n because_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o union_n with_o god_n by_o its_o act_n of_o conversion_n as_o aforesaid_a proceed_v from_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n therefore_o this_o union_n enjoy_v by_o act_n may_v be_v call_v actual_a union_n and_o the_o other_o which_o abide_v without_o act_n or_o while_o act_n be_v suspend_v may_v be_v call_v potential_a because_o the_o soul_n remain_v in_o union_n with_o god_n simple_o through_o its_o power_n be_v as_o it_o be_v glue_v unto_o or_o cement_v with_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n now_o any_o sin_n which_o the_o soul_n commit_v do_v certain_o break_v off_o its_o actual_a union_n with_o god_n but_o though_o the_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v not_o quite_o break_v off_o the_o potential_a though_o it_o weaken_v and_o many_o sin_n weaken_v it_o much_o yea_o some_o sin_n may_v break_v it_o quite_o off_o but_o theâ—_n it_o have_v be_v but_o partial_a and_o not_o through_o and_o total_a for_o if_o it_o have_v god_n be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o to_o its_o spiritual_a action_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v beget_v of_o god_n from_o a_o seed_n we_o understand_v this_o in_o different_a respect_n
not_o apprehend_v nor_o acknowledge_v that_o that_o birth_n have_v any_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o birth_n of_o any_o other_o man_n which_o i_o say_v it_o have_v according_a to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n give_v i_o concern_v it_o and_o this_o be_v demonstrable_a also_o from_o scripture_n â—_o but_o i_o shall_v soon_o put_v a_o end_n to_o both_o these_o reason_n and_o yet_o also_o speak_v or_o declare_v free_o that_o which_o be_v give_v i_o concern_v the_o same_o and_o in_o plainness_n so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v admit_v i_o say_v then_o that_o neither_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o conceive_v or_o bear_v in_o this_o birth_n nor_o yet_o be_v it_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n thereof_o for_o i_o confess_v to_o say_v either_o of_o these_o two_o be_v very_o unsound_a and_o be_v altogether_o contrary_a unto_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o dignity_n and_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o as_o for_o the_o godhead_n to_o in_o it_o and_o that_o substantial_o and_o in_o its_o very_a nature_n somewhat_o above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n what_o can_v it_o be_v but_o the_o godhead_n itself_o i_o answer_v yea_o it_o have_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o godhead_n itself_o but_o a_o certain_a middle_a nature_n substance_n or_o be_v betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o mankind_n that_o be_v as_o far_o yea_o and_o much_o far_a transcendent_a in_o glory_n above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n as_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o beast_n yea_o it_o be_v even_o above_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o angel_n this_o will_v be_v think_v the_o more_o strange_a of_o by_o many_o because_o they_o have_v be_v common_o teach_v and_o have_v common_o receive_v it_o that_o there_o be_v no_o middle_a substance_n betwixt_o the_o godhead_n and_o we_o at_o least_o as_o to_o the_o inward_a for_o they_o have_v suppose_v that_o the_o spirit_n or_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n or_o a_o angel_n be_v next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n which_o i_o deny_v for_o the_o heavenly_a or_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n of_o which_o the_o divine_a birth_n be_v both_o conceive_v in_o mary_n and_o be_v inward_o conceive_v in_o the_o saint_n be_v of_o a_o middle_a nature_n now_o this_o middle_a nature_n i_o call_v a_o divine_a substance_n or_o essence_n not_o as_o if_o it_o be_v the_o godhead_n itself_o or_o a_o particle_n or_o portion_n of_o it_o but_o because_o of_o its_o excellency_n above_o all_o other_o thing_n next_o unto_o the_o godhead_n as_o on_o such_o a_o account_n man_n do_v call_v other_o thing_n divine_a which_o be_v very_o excellent_a yea_o some_o call_v holy_a man_n divine_a and_o some_o call_v these_o who_o teach_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n divine_n as_o john_n who_o write_v the_o revelation_n be_v call_v john_n the_o divine_a also_o this_o excellent_a and_o intermediate_v be_v may_v be_v call_v the_o divine_a be_v on_o such_o a_o account_n as_o because_o the_o godhead_n be_v most_o immediate_o manifest_v therein_o and_o dwell_v in_o it_o as_o in_o the_o most_o holy_a place_n or_o holy_a of_o holies_n for_o thus_o even_o according_a unto_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n we_o common_o say_v such_o a_o place_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v such_o a_o man_n be_v because_o of_o his_o dwell_n or_o abide_v there_o and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v call_v the_o divine_a essence_n or_o be_v for_o that_o god_n do_v dwell_v in_o it_o though_o he_o dwell_v in_o himself_o also_o and_o so_o do_v from_o everlasting_a and_o true_o i_o can_v but_o in_o charity_n construe_v this_o to_o have_v be_v intend_v by_o some_o in_o some_o other_o place_n who_o affirm_v that_o christ_n as_o man_n be_v bear_v of_o the_o divine_a essence_n or_o substance_n for_o so_o say_v i_o according_a to_o the_o foresay_a explanation_n that_o he_o be_v not_o only_o bear_v of_o it_o but_o of_o the_o essence_n or_o substance_n of_o man_n also_o through_o mary_n and_o thus_o he_o be_v both_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o son_n of_o man_n according_a to_o his_o very_a birth_n in_o mary_n and_o therefore_o even_o according_a to_o that_o birth_n he_o have_v a_o divine_a perfection_n and_o virtue_n and_o that_o substantial_a above_o all_o other_o man_n that_o ever_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v who_o be_v the_o heavenly_a man_n by_o virtue_n of_o which_o divine_a perfection_n he_o be_v unite_v with_o god_n in_o a_o immediate_a manner_n and_o replenish_v with_o such_o a_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n as_o no_o other_o man_n or_o man_n be_v capable_a of_o yea_o by_o virtue_n thereof_o the_o fullness_n dwell_v in_o he_o bodily_a as_o the_o scripture_n declare_v and_o this_o divine_a and_o supereminent_a perfection_n of_o this_o birth_n above_o the_o common_a nature_n of_o man_n yea_o of_o angel_n be_v that_o wonderful_a nexus_fw-la tie_n or_o bond_n betwixt_o god_n and_o he_o through_o which_o he_o have_v immediate_a union_n with_o he_o yea_o it_o be_v and_o may_v be_v call_v the_o union_n viz._n that_o by_o which_o god_n and_o man_n be_v make_v one_o and_o such_o and_o union_n as_o no_o other_o creature_n have_v or_o ever_o shall_v have_v for_o that_o the_o union_n of_o god_n with_o all_o other_o creature_n be_v but_o mediate_v whereas_o this_o be_v immediate_a wherefore_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o ought_v to_o be_v call_v jesus_n christ_n both_o god_n and_o man_n and_o no_o other_o and_o by_o this_o divine_a perfection_n he_o carry_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o his_o very_a outward_a birth_n as_o also_o he_o carry_v in_o the_o same_o the_o true_a nature_n and_o image_n of_o man_n through_o his_o partake_n of_o marys_n substance_n and_o thus_o he_o have_v our_o whole_a and_o perfect_a true_a nature_n as_o man_n be_v like_o we_o in_o all_o thing_n without_o sin_n in_o soul_n and_o body_n so_o he_o have_v also_o somewhat_o even_o as_o to_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n much_o more_o excellent_a than_o all_o other_o man_n and_o that_o substanstial_o so_o that_o his_o body_n have_v not_o only_o the_o perfection_n of_o our_o body_n but_o also_o much_o more_o because_o of_o its_o be_v generate_v not_o only_o of_o the_o seed_n of_o mary_n but_o of_o a_o divine_a seed_n and_o his_o soul_n have_v all_o the_o perfection_n and_o property_n which_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o innocency_n have_v but_o it_o have_v also_o much_o more_o excellent_a property_n and_o perfection_n and_o that_o substantial_o and_o therefore_o his_o body_n though_o it_o can_v suffer_v death_n yet_o it_o can_v not_o suffer_v corruption_n and_o his_o soul_n can_v not_o sin_n nor_o be_v corrupt_v with_o iniquity_n but_o do_v ever_o suffer_v under_o it_o and_o by_o it_o which_o soul_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o quicken_a spirit_n as_o paul_n have_v declare_v 1_o cor._n 15._o now_o because_o of_o the_o wonderful_a and_o divine_a excellency_n and_o perfection_n of_o this_o birth_n therefore_o it_o be_v ordain_v and_o appoint_v of_o god_n to_o be_v that_o universal_a balsam_n or_o medicine_n to_o cure_v and_o restore_v not_o only_o all_o these_o of_o mankind_n in_o soul_n and_o body_n who_o shall_v receive_v he_o inward_o by_o faith_n and_o love_n but_o also_o to_o cure_v and_o restore_v the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n from_o its_o distemper_n and_o corruption_n that_o be_v come_v upon_o it_o through_o sin_n yea_o this_o be_v the_o little_a leaven_n that_o shall_v leaven_n the_o whole_a lump_n of_o this_o visible_a creation_n by_o its_o pure_a heavenly_a and_o divine_a virtue_n into_o most_o wonderful_a sweetness_n purity_n virtue_n beauty_n and_o glory_n whereby_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v make_v new_a and_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a shall_v be_v as_o it_o be_v spiritual_a yea_o this_o be_v indeed_o that_o stone_n of_o the_o wiseman_n which_o by_o its_o touch_n shall_v in_o due_a time_n change_v not_o only_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o the_o body_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n and_o purge_v it_o from_o all_o its_o weakness_n and_o impurity_n and_o true_o another_o philosopher_n stone_n even_o in_o the_o outward_a at_o least_o to_o that_o latitude_n as_o it_o be_v common_o define_v shall_v man_n never_o find_v but_o this_o even_o this_o holy_a and_o divine_a body_n and_o birth_n which_o now_o 1669_o year_n ago_o be_v bring_v forth_o through_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o and_o by_o the_o virgin_n mary_n for_o what_o can_v
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o nothing_o that_o he_o ever_o do_v or_o suffer_v be_v in_o vain_a or_o without_o virtue_n and_o influence_n unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o thus_o have_v declare_v the_o great_a influence_n which_o the_o very_a outward_a come_n birth_n life_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o christ_n have_v upon_o man_n both_o for_o their_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n let_v we_o now_o see_v how_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n we_o shall_v improve_v the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o for_o indeed_o we_o shall_v find_v how_o the_o apostle_n do_v great_o improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o order_n unto_o mortification_n or_o die_v unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o holiness_n and_o make_v progress_n therein_o unto_o perfection_n as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o example_n rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o know_v you_o not_o that_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n christ_n for_o the_o mortification_n of_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o that_o unto_o perfection_n and_o do_v not_o sooth_n or_o please_v themselves_o to_o live_v in_o much_o sin_n and_o unholiness_n and_o speak_v peace_n to_o themselves_o therein_o because_o of_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o and_o now_o i_o shall_v sum_v up_o in_o a_o few_o word_n the_o particular_a use_n and_o benefit_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o order_n to_o a_o grow_a and_o proceed_v in_o holiness_n through_o the_o improve_n the_o come_v suffering_n death_n and_o resurrection_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o outward_a through_o the_o power_n and_o light_n of_o his_o own_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n in_o and_o by_o which_o only_o they_o can_v improve_v they_o aright_o i._o as_o his_o come_v birth_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n etc._n etc._n be_v present_v and_o set_v before_o we_o in_o the_o evidence_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o our_o heart_n so_o it_o be_v make_v a_o great_a occasion_n to_o strengthen_v both_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n and_o our_o love_n towards_o he_o forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v give_v by_o his_o outward_a come_n etc._n etc._n as_o aforesaid_a a_o very_a great_a and_o large_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n towards_o all_o man_n for_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o his_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a in_o permit_v man_n so_o to_o use_v his_o own_o dear_a son_n which_o be_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v unto_o himself_o yea_o herein_o he_o give_v a_o most_o convince_a testimony_n how_o he_o have_v bear_v and_o suffer_v with_o wonderful_a long-suffering_a the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v in_o any_o true_a measure_n but_o by_o these_o alone_o who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o righteous_a life_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o to_o know_v a_o measure_n of_o redemption_n from_o sin_n thereby_o such_o will_v feel_v how_o that_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n jesus_n suffer_v by_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o have_v feel_v the_o life_n of_o he_o in_o we_o to_o be_v deep_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o deep_o to_o suffer_v through_o and_o by_o iniquity_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o even_o in_o other_o and_o in_o a_o whole_a country_n and_o nation_n yea_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o of_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v with_o it_o in_o dominion_n either_o in_o full_a love_n or_o wrath_n and_o true_o these_o deep_a suffering_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o man_n iniquity_n real_o feel_v and_o witness_v by_o he_o as_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o on_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n i_o find_v the_o professor_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o for_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o christ_n suffer_v any_o other_o way_n by_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n lay_v on_o he_o then_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o man_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o they_o understand_v his_o bear_v our_o sin_n to_o be_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o do_v bear_v which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o suffer_v much_o more_o deep_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o because_o of_o that_o great_a and_o implacable_a contrariety_n and_o enmity_n which_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o have_v against_o his_o tender_a life_n which_o at_o that_o time_n have_v muster_v up_o all_o its_o force_n against_o he_o the_o lord_n permit_v it_o so_o to_o be_v that_o by_o his_o patient_a and_o meek_a suffering_n he_o may_v overcome_v it_o as_o indeed_o he_o do_v and_o even_o upon_o the_o cross_n triumph_v over_o it_o and_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o transgression_n the_o great_a blow_n and_o wound_n that_o ever_o it_o get_v which_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n by_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o his_o suffering_n be_v utter_o slay_v and_o extinguish_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o fill_v with_o his_o holy_a and_o righteous_a spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n of_o iniquity_n wrought_v what_o it_o can_v so_o to_o eclipse_n and_o vail_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n from_o his_o righteous_a soul_n as_o to_o take_v away_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n from_o he_o which_o at_o other_o time_n he_o have_v yet_o his_o faith_n pierce_v through_o this_o cloud_n that_o it_o do_v not_o overcome_v he_o but_o he_o overcome_v it_o and_o signify_v his_o faith_n in_o god_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o respect_v that_o sensible_a joy_n and_o comfort_n yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o deep_a trial_n the_o father_n be_v with_o he_o in_o love_n and_o in_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o that_o love_n the_o wrath_n become_v mitigate_v and_o qualify_v towards_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o wrath_n be_v indeed_o against_o man_n but_o never_o on_o any_o account_n direct_o against_o christ_n who_o do_v indeed_o intervene_v and_o intermediate_v betwixt_o it_o and_o we_o to_o bear_v it_o off_o and_o qualify_v it_o as_o be_v abovesaid_a yet_o he_o can_v never_o suffer_v it_o as_o the_o damn_a do_v for_o he_o qualify_v it_o both_o in_o the_o father_n love_n and_o in_o his_o own_o but_o the_o wrath_n which_o the_o damn_a suffer_v have_v no_o such_o qualification_n and_o true_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o the_o father_n be_v to_o speak_v proper_o offend_v or_o displease_v suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o procure_v or_o purchase_v it_o but_o also_o for_o his_o sanctify_a and_o mortify_v grace_n even_o for_o a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o die_v perfect_o unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n so_o thâ—t_v the_o soul_n may_v strong_o plead_v with_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v pour_v forth_o abundant_o of_o his_o grace_n life_n light_n and_o spirit_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v it_o abundant_o and_o have_v open_v the_o fountain_n of_o the_o father_n love_n abundant_o by_o his_o obedience_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o soul_n may_v come_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o that_o fullness_n of_o he_o which_o he_o have_v purchase_v and_o be_v in_o he_o even_o grace_n for_o grace_n joh._n 1.16_o both_o to_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v and_o as_o much_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o v._o also_o these_o thing_n present_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o in_o and_o thereby_o apply_v to_o the_o soul_n become_v very_o strong_a and_o forcible_a motive_n unto_o it_o to_o war_n against_o sin_n universal_o and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o to_o the_o utter_a kill_n and_o destroy_v of_o it_o see_v it_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o that_o tender_a life_n of_o christ_n which_o suffer_v so_o much_o on_o this_o account_n even_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o sin_n and_o save_v it_o therefrom_o so_o that_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o diligent_o apply_v itself_o unto_o a_o total_a mortification_n of_o sin_n it_o do_v nothing_o answer_v unto_o that_o love_n and_o goodwill_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o suffering_n nor_o to_o the_o end_n thereof_o they_o be_v also_o of_o the_o same_o force_n to_o move_v the_o soul_n to_o follow_v after_o holiness_n till_o it_o attain_v unto_o it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v pure_a and_o holy_a as_o christ_n its_o belove_a and_o spouse_n who_o give_v himself_o for_o she_o that_o she_o may_v be_v holy_a and_o to_o present_v she_o unto_o god_n without_o spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n eph._n 5.27_o also_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n but_o be_v move_v to_o press_v after_o holiness_n see_v it_o inward_o feel_v that_o the_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o much_o ease_v and_o refresh_v and_o delight_v in_o its_o become_a holy_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v former_o grieve_v and_o burden_v with_o its_o iniquity_n vi_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o his_o outward_a come_n life_n and_o way_n of_o conversation_n doctrine_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n be_v a_o most_o noble_a and_o perfect_a example_n unto_o we_o even_o the_o best_a that_o ever_o outward_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v that_o we_o may_v imitate_v his_o virtue_n and_o follow_v his_o step_n in_o all_o godliness_n temperance_n and_o righteousness_n who_o teach_v we_o most_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
suffer_v death_n for_o sin_n give_v we_o a_o most_o convince_a example_n that_o we_o shall_v die_v unto_o it_o and_o suffer_v it_o no_o more_o to_o live_v in_o we_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v and_o remember_v that_o in_o all_o these_o step_n the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n etc._n etc._n have_v these_o influence_n upon_o we_o not_o as_o they_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o bare_o in_o our_o own_o spirit_n or_o as_o we_o do_v bring_v they_o to_o our_o remembrance_n thereby_o and_o so_o make_v a_o work_n upon_o ourselves_o in_o our_o own_o thought_n and_o motion_n for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v never_o profit_v our_o own_o soul_n either_o in_o die_v unto_o sin_n or_o live_v in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n indeed_o we_o may_v thereby_o raise_v spark_n of_o our_o own_o kindle_v in_o the_o affectionate_a part_n and_o work_v some_o effect_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v a_o shadow_n or_o likeness_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o can_v never_o be_v the_o thing_n themselves_o but_o as_o they_o be_v inward_o present_v to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o apply_v thereby_o and_o that_o instant_o and_o continual_o for_o it_o be_v his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n alone_o which_o both_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o use_n and_o end_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o also_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n the_o live_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o they_o and_o in_o a_o live_n and_o effectual_a way_n do_v only_o and_o can_v apply_v they_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o whole_a power_n thereof_o for_o the_o work_v such_o suitable_a effect_n and_o impression_n as_o be_v proper_a thereunto_o but_o some_o may_v say_v see_v the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v know_v and_o improve_v by_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o effectual_a to_o work_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o for_o its_o mortification_n unto_o sin_n and_o live_n in_o holiness_n unto_o god_n will_v it_o not_o therefore_o seem_v that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o every_o one_o for_o the_o attainment_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o how_o can_v a_o soul_n believe_v that_o god_n will_v be_v gracious_a unto_o it_o or_o be_v reconcileable_a with_o it_o but_o as_o it_o look_v upon_o that_o testimony_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o love_n in_o send_v his_o belove_a son_n outward_o into_o the_o world_n to_o suffer_v and_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n in_o order_n unto_o our_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n also_o how_o can_v it_o love_n god_n with_o that_o purity_n and_o fervency_n of_o love_n which_o be_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o it_o regard_v and_o consider_v that_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o outward_a answ_n indeed_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v of_o very_a bless_a use_n and_o advantage_n and_o all_o who_o have_v it_o shall_v be_v very_o thankful_a unto_o god_n who_o have_v give_v we_o this_o testimony_n of_o his_o love_n goodwill_n long-suffering_a and_o power_n in_o the_o outward_a come_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o the_o more_o abundant_a help_a and_o enable_v we_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o love_v he_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v though_o express_a knowledge_n of_o his_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n be_v very_o profitable_a to_o beget_v faith_n and_o love_n in_o man_n towards_o god_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o aught_o to_o be_v high_o value_v in_o its_o place_n nevertheless_o this_o express_a knowledge_n be_v not_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o faith_n and_o love_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o outward_a come_v suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n may_v have_v and_o have_v a_o real_a and_o true_a influence_n upon_o they_o who_o know_v it_o not_o express_o for_o see_v he_o have_v taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n and_o give_v his_o life_n a_o ransom_n for_o all_o it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v a_o influence_n upon_o all_o yea_o the_o apostle_n express_o mention_n what_o it_o be_v rom._n 5.18_o 19_o how_o that_o by_o the_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n of_o christ_n the_o free_a gift_n be_v come_v upon_o all_o to_o justification_n of_o life_n look_v then_o as_o many_o of_o adam_n posterity_n suffer_v disadvantage_n by_o his_o disobedience_n who_o never_o know_v it_o express_o so_o why_o may_v not_o many_o receive_v a_o advantage_n by_o christ_n the_o second_o adam_n obedience_n even_o in_o the_o outward_a who_o never_o know_v it_o express_o yea_o certain_o they_o have_v for_o how_o many_o thousand_o have_v be_v save_v before_o christ_n come_v in_o the_o outward_a who_o know_v it_o not_o express_o and_o many_o who_o know_v something_o of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o very_o dark_o and_o under_o vail_n and_o figure_n yea_o the_o very_a disciple_n do_v not_o for_o a_o good_a time_n know_v of_o his_o death_n so_o that_o when_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o it_o they_o be_v astonish_v and_o yet_o they_o have_v both_o faith_n and_o love_n in_o some_o measure_n see_v than_o that_o some_o have_v faith_n and_o love_n to_o god_n and_o be_v save_v without_o the_o express_a knowledge_n thereof_o before_o he_o come_v outward_o why_o not_o also_o after_o his_o come_n where_o his_o come_n outward_o have_v not_o be_v preach_v nor_o reveal_v yea_o have_v not_o god_n a_o way_n of_o save_a infant_n and_o the_o dumb_a and_o deaf_a who_o have_v not_o that_o express_a knowledge_n for_o now_o christ_n be_v inward_o come_v in_o a_o seed_n of_o life_n and_o light_a in_o all_o which_o be_v the_o word_n of_o reconciliation_n by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v reconcile_v with_o god_n as_o they_o join_v and_o apply_v their_o mind_n thereunto_o and_o in_o this_o the_o lord_n god_n do_v give_v a_o sufficient_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n mercy_n goodwill_n long_o suffer_v and_o power_n unto_o every_o man_n for_o his_o salvation_n whereby_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a faith_n in_o god_n and_o the_o true_a love_n towards_o he_o even_o according_a to_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o this_o holy_a seed_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o how_o he_o bear_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v intercession_n or_o atonement_n unto_o god_n may_v be_v learn_v in_o some_o measure_n with_o many_o other_o thing_n concern_v christ_n in_o relation_n to_o he_o and_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a which_o be_v a_o outward_a and_o visible_a testimony_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n in_o all_o age_n in_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o indeed_o we_o find_v that_o this_o be_v only_o the_o true_a and_o effectual_a way_n of_o know_v the_o use_n and_o work_v of_o his_o come_v and_o suffering_n and_o death_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o turn_v and_o have_v our_o mind_n turn_v inward_o unto_o himself_o near_o and_o in_o our_o heart_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n to_o know_v by_o a_o inward_a feel_n and_o good_a experience_n his_o do_n and_o suffering_n in_o we_o by_o be_v make_v conformable_a thereunto_o in_o which_o holy_a seed_n as_o it_o arise_v in_o we_o such_o a_o clear_a light_n shine_v forth_o in_o our_o heart_n as_o give_v unto_o we_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o use_n of_o his_o inward_a do_n and_o suffering_n hence_o also_o such_o a_o precious_a sweet_a and_o powerful_a life_n spring_v up_o from_o and_o in_o the_o same_o holy_a seed_n which_o do_v with_o much_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n enable_v we_o to_o follow_v his_o example_n in_o the_o outward_a in_o faith_n in_o obedience_n in_o love_n in_o purity_n in_o patience_n in_o godliness_n in_o righteousness_n and_o temperance_n and_o all_o other_o thing_n wherein_o we_o be_v require_v to_o imitate_v he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a loss_n we_o find_v people_n at_o general_o who_o seek_v to_o know_v the_o virtue_n and_o use_v of_o his_o come_v do_n and_o suffering_n in_o the_o outward_a by_o what_o they_o can_v outward_o hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o while_o as_o they_o remain_v estrange_v from_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o they_o can_v never_o know_v the_o same_o but_o in_o this_o and_o oh_o at_o what_o great_a pain_n have_v many_o poor_a soul_n be_v to_o imitate_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n by_o set_v he_o as_o their_o example_n before_o he_o but_o mere_o as_o the_o letter_n or_o history_n declare_v of_o he_o by_o which_o way_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a imitation_n or_o follow_v of_o he_o for_o
for_o certain_o this_o divine_a principle_n which_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a or_o without_o operation_n it_o be_v of_o a_o most_o active_a or_o operative_a nature_n even_o as_o fire_n and_o light_n in_o the_o outward_a can_v the_o outward_a sun_n shine_v and_o enlighten_v the_o earth_n and_o have_v no_o operation_n nor_o influence_n upon_o it_o or_o can_v the_o fire_n burn_v and_o have_v no_o operation_n or_o influence_n upon_o what_o be_v next_o unto_o it_o nay_o sure_o and_o therefore_o no_o more_o can_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o light_n be_v in_o any_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v certain_o and_o infallible_o have_v some_o influence_n and_o operation_n upon_o that_o soul_n in_o who_o it_o be_v and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n who_o day_n of_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 4.12_o be_v live_v and_o powerful_a or_o operative_a and_o sharp_a than_o any_o two_o edge_a sword_n pierce_v even_o to_o the_o divide_v asunder_o of_o soul_n and_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o joint_n and_o marrow_n and_o be_v a_o discerner_n judge_n or_o reprover_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o intent_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o this_o word_n be_v in_o all_o even_o that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n as_o john_n declare_v 1.9_o now_o mark_v the_o word_n lighten_v which_o do_v import_v its_o active_a and_o operative_a influence_n and_o virtue_n in_o all_o man_n in_o some_o measure_n or_o degree_n real_o to_o convince_v they_o and_o although_o there_o be_v great_a darkness_n over_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o all_o unconverted_a man_n and_o woman_n that_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v darkness_n yet_o as_o john_n have_v declare_v the_o light_n shine_v in_o darkness_n although_o the_o darkness_n comprehend_v it_o not_o 1.5_o so_o the_o light_n not_o only_o be_v in_o the_o darkness_n but_o it_o shine_v in_o the_o darkness_n and_o work_v against_o the_o darkness_n to_o reveal_v it_o and_o remove_v it_o even_o as_o the_o darkness_n do_v work_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o hide_v and_o obscure_v the_o light_n and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o extinguish_v and_o quench_v it_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v a_o most_o absurd_a thing_n to_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o natural_a principle_n have_v its_o operation_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v not_o without_o its_o influence_n and_o force_n to_o move_v and_o act_v the_o soul_n as_o also_o that_o the_o principle_n of_o darkness_n to_o wit_n the_o diabolical_a or_o hellish_a principle_n even_o the_o very_a spirit_n of_o satan_n have_v its_o operation_n and_o influence_n in_o all_o man_n in_o who_o it_o be_v and_o yet_o to_o deny_v that_o this_o divine_a principle_n that_o be_v in_o nature_n more_o powerful_a and_o more_o operative_a than_o either_o of_o the_o other_o two_o have_v any_o influence_n or_o operation_n in_o they_o at_o all_o and_o this_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o also_o to_o consider_v that_o it_o please_v god_n in_o his_o great_a condescension_n many_o time_n together_o with_o his_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n in_o thy_o soul_n to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o argument_n draw_v therefrom_o make_v they_o of_o service_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n as_o also_o to_o make_v use_n of_o thy_o own_o natural_a understanding_n and_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o light_n by_o shine_v upon_o it_o and_o raise_v up_o in_o it_o pure_a and_o holy_a conviction_n and_o open_n of_o truth_n together_o with_o pure_a and_o holy_a desire_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o as_o they_o be_v entertain_v become_v a_o true_a beginning_n of_o conversion_n in_o that_o soul_n but_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o one_o and_o the_o same_o always_o to_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o state_n for_o sometime_o as_o be_v say_v he_o make_v use_v of_o the_o natural_a principle_n itself_o to_o wit_n the_o natural_a understanding_n and_o reason_n of_o man_n by_o shine_v upon_o it_o in_o a_o more_o active_a way_n and_o manner_n so_o as_o it_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o natural_a principle_n itself_o help_v with_o scripture_n argument_n and_o reason_n or_o some_o outward_a help_n that_o do_v convince_v the_o soul_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o it_o be_v force_v to_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v true_a while_o yet_o it_o be_v divine_a light_n work_v in_o the_o soul_n more_o secret_o and_o hidden_o that_o have_v the_o main_a stroke_n and_o hand_n in_o the_o business_n at_o other_o time_n the_o divine_a light_n appear_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o more_o open_o and_o scarce_o at_o all_o make_v use_v of_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o understanding_n further_a than_o in_o a_o passive_a way_n as_o when_o the_o eye_n look_v towards_o a_o object_n or_o as_o the_o ear_n hear_v a_o voice_n or_o sound_n wherein_o the_o soul_n be_v rather_o passive_a than_o active_a and_o sometime_o all_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v draw_v into_o a_o deep_a silence_n by_o the_o mighty_a and_o yet_o secret_a work_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o divine_a principle_n and_o light_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n by_o none_o of_o its_o natural_a or_o humane_a power_n or_o faculty_n do_v apprehend_v what_o be_v inward_o reveal_v in_o it_o by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o they_o all_o be_v silence_v bind_v lock_v up_o and_o as_o it_o be_v make_v asleep_a both_o imagination_n and_o reason_n or_o whatever_o else_o can_v be_v call_v a_o natural_a or_o humane_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v whole_o suspend_v and_o lay_v by_o as_o of_o no_o present_a use_n and_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v whole_o dead_a for_o that_o present_a time_n unto_o they_o all_o as_o so_o many_o dead_a member_n the_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n do_v raise_v up_o and_o awaken_v in_o that_o soul_n a_o new_a sense_n and_o power_n of_o discern_v of_o which_o it_o former_o have_v no_o experience_n or_o at_o lest_o make_v no_o reflection_n upon_o the_o same_o which_o be_v the_o spiritual_a sensation_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a thing_n as_o inward_o reveal_v by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o this_o kind_n of_o experience_n be_v more_o rare_a to_o new_a beginner_n and_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v be_v a_o most_o singular_a and_o choice_a mercy_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o yet_o be_v most_o ordinary_a to_o all_o those_o who_o in_o any_o considerable_a measure_n be_v true_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n and_o leaven_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n at_o any_o time_n to_o give_v thou_o such_o a_o experience_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o so_o considerable_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n thou_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o as_o a_o singular_a favour_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o if_o it_o be_v deny_v at_o present_a unto_o thou_o god_n not_o judge_v thou_o worthy_a of_o so_o high_a a_o favour_n thou_o oughte_v to_o be_v content_a with_o that_o other_o way_n and_o such_o a_o convincement_n be_v a_o true_a divine_a and_o spiritual_a convincement_n proceed_v original_o and_o principal_o from_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n of_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v virtue_n sufficient_a in_o that_o which_o do_v thus_o convince_v thou_o to_o enable_v thou_o to_o believe_v and_o join_v unto_o it_o and_o to_o obey_v its_o requiring_n according_a to_o the_o present_a measure_n and_o that_o be_v a_o true_a sufficient_a divine_a call_n for_o the_o present_a which_o if_o thou_o do_v slight_a or_o neglect_v in_o expectation_n of_o a_o great_a or_o more_o clear_a thou_o do_v tempt_v the_o lord_n and_o provoke_v his_o
