again_o see_v be_v the_o perfection_n of_o the_o eye_n but_o yet_o by_o look_v on_o the_o sun_n the_o eye_n be_v blind_v and_o who_o know_v but_o there_o may_v be_v object_n so_o transcendent_o glorious_a as_o to_o dazzle_v and_o put_v out_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o mind_n there_o may_v be_v so_o vast_a a_o disproportion_n betwixt_o some_o object_n and_o these_o faculty_n that_o they_o may_v stretch_v they_o beyond_o their_o natural_a tone_n and_o so_o crack_v and_o break_v they_o scrutator_fw-la majestatis_fw-la opprimetur_fw-la à _fw-la gloriae_fw-la beside_o experience_n tell_v we_o that_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o reflect_v and_o know_v itself_o and_o observe_v its_o action_n it_o be_v imperfect_a and_o in_o the_o way_n to_o ruin_n answ_n 1._o all_o these_o instance_n be_v of_o body_n or_o 2._o of_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o depend_v on_o the_o body_n or_o 3._o if_o they_o be_v of_o the_o soul_n consider_v in_o itself_o yet_o they_o will_v signify_v no_o more_o than_o this_o that_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v hurt_v and_o damage_v by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o some_o truth_n or_o delight_n in_o some_o good_n but_o it_o will_v have_v a_o present_a sense_n of_o it_o as_o the_o eye_n be_v dazzle_v in_o look_v on_o the_o sun_n and_o so_o will_v turn_v away_o itself_o from_o that_o object_n if_o my_o observation_n be_v true_a hitherto_o i_o never_o find_v my_o faculty_n impair_v by_o more_o clear_a and_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o any_o thing_n nor_o by_o delight_n in_o that_o which_o i_o have_v a_o true_a knowledge_n of_o but_o i_o have_v find_v myself_o worse_a for_o imperfect_a and_o obscure_a knowledge_n and_o for_o such_o delight_n as_o be_v found_v in_o a_o lie_n or_o a_o mistake_n indeed_o sometime_o the_o pursuit_n of_o clear_a knowledge_n when_o it_o be_v not_o at_o all_o or_o difficult_o attainable_a or_o when_o it_o be_v not_o of_o great_a use_n and_o sometime_o the_o clear_a knowledge_n i_o 〈◊〉_d of_o a_o thing_n have_v be_v the_o occasion_n of_o detain_v i_o from_o such_o a_o employment_n of_o my_o understanding_n or_o other_o faculty_n as_o be_v more_o necessary_a so_o also_o delight_n in_o or_o endeavour_v after_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a good_a may_v have_v hinder_v i_o from_o do_v more_o or_o great_a good_n but_o from_o all_o this_o i_o observe_v that_o all_o the_o prejudice_n that_o be_v do_v i_o come_v to_o this_o that_o i_o be_o hinder_v from_o more_o knowledge_n or_o from_o delight_n in_o and_o do_v more_o good_n now_o i_o shall_v escape_v this_o danger_n if_o i_o aim_v at_o all_o the_o knowledge_n i_o be_o capable_a of_o and_o take_v delight_n in_o the_o good_a of_o all_o and_o if_o it_o so_o happen_v that_o by_o this_o i_o sacrifice_v myself_o to_o the_o common_a good_a i_o do_v but_o follow_v my_o natural_a inclination_n and_o it_o be_v much_o better_a to_o perish_v in_o obey_v than_o to_o continue_v in_o oppose_v my_o nature_n tully_n somewhere_o say_v life_n be_v not_o so_o dear_a as_o that_o affection_n of_o do_v good_n i_o add_v that_o this_o be_v our_o very_a life_n and_o be_v so_o i_o do_v not_o see_v how_o we_o can_v lose_v or_o hurt_v ourselves_o in_o comply_v with_o this_o inclination_n but_o i_o must_v not_o now_o pursue_v this_o matter_n any_o further_o to_o return_v to_o my_o main_a argument_n from_o all_o that_o i_o have_v say_v in_o explication_n of_o what_o be_v the_o way_n or_o life_n of_o man_n it_o may_v appear_v that_o that_o be_v call_v his_o way_n which_o lead_v to_o that_o for_o which_o he_o be_v design_v viz._n the_o perfection_n or_o good_a state_n of_o himself_o and_o other_o and_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n which_o result_v from_o this_o and_o consequent_o that_o sobriety_n righteousness_n and_o godliness_n be_v the_o life_n of_o man._n these_o be_v the_o thing_n for_o which_o man_n be_v make_v for_o these_o he_o have_v faculty_n which_o fit_a and_o appetite_n which_o do_v incline_v he_o to_o they_o all_o i_o add_v far_o to_o this_o be_v that_o as_o we_o have_v distinguish_v the_o way_n of_o man_n from_o that_o of_o brute_n so_o we_o must_v put_v a_o considerable_a difference_n betwixt_o the_o way_n of_o a_o child_n and_o that_o of_o a_o grow_a man_n and_o take_v due_a care_n not_o to_o make_v the_o child_n a_o man_n too_o soon_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o explication_n i_o proceed_v now_o to_o some_o consideration_n by_o way_n of_o argument_n and_o 1._o let_v we_o consider_v the_o absolute_a necessity_n that_o every_o man_n shall_v understand_v his_o way_n of_o life_n and_o be_v exercise_v in_o it_o this_o be_v necessary_a to_o his_o live_n well_o to_o his_o present_a and_o to_o his_o future_a happiness_n nor_o to_o his_o own_o only_a but_o to_o other_o man_n also_o as_o many_o as_o have_v relation_n to_o he_o as_o be_v near_o he_o be_v the_o better_a or_o worse_o for_o his_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o every_o man_n shall_v know_v and_o do_v all_o that_o which_o his_o great_a creator_n design_v and_o make_v he_o for_o else_o he_o be_v in_o vain_a he_o will_v never_o attain_v his_o end_n but_o that_o be_v not_o all_o he_o will_v be_v miserable_a he_o will_v not_o only_o fall_v short_a of_o god_n end_n but_o oppose_v it_o he_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v perfect_a and_o happy_a in_o himself_o and_o from_o contribute_v to_o the_o perfection_n and_o good_a indeed_o be_v it_o possible_a he_o shall_v for_o by_o luxury_n and_o softness_n and_o excess_n of_o corporeal_a gratification_n the_o soul_n be_v make_v careless_a and_o inconsiderate_a inordinate_a in_o its_o desire_n and_o impatient_a of_o the_o least_o difficulty_n and_o opposition_n and_o the_o body_n be_v render_v weak_a and_o feeble_a through_o want_n of_o exercise_n and_o disease_n thus_o i_o have_v show_v concern_v the_o four_o common_o call_v cardinal_n virtue_n how_o they_o be_v befriend_v by_o this_o great_a principle_n of_o do_v good_a to_o all_o and_o every_o one_o will_v understand_v that_o dependence_n which_o most_o of_o the_o other_o virtue_n have_v on_o it_o and_o how_o much_o it_o contribute_v to_o their_o be_v and_o growth_n this_o man_n of_o universal_a good_a those_o that_o oppose_v his_o interest_n nay_o that_o intend_v he_o mischief_n how_o glad_o do_v he_o pardon_v injury_n and_o receive_v a_o repent_a enemy_n into_o his_o bosom_n how_o willing_a nay_o forward_o be_v he_o to_o lend_v to_o the_o borrower_n to_o give_v to_o the_o indigent_a and_o what_o he_o give_v be_v from_o a_o liberal_a hand_n and_o a_o bountiful_a mind_n no_o grudge_n no_o spare_v appear_v in_o his_o communication_n he_o be_v as_o willing_a to_o take_v care_n of_o the_o convenience_n as_o to_o relieve_v the_o necessity_n of_o other_o have_v not_o only_o so_o much_o charity_n as_o to_o keep_v they_o just_a from_o starve_v but_o so_o much_o as_o will_v engage_v he_o to_o endeavour_v to_o make_v they_o happy_a and_o then_o for_o the_o lesser_a office_n that_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o conversation_n and_o make_v it_o pleasant_a they_o derive_v from_o the_o same_o original_a for_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o that_o be_v set_v on_o do_v good_a to_o all_o will_v be_v affable_a and_o of_o easy_a address_n by_o all_o he_o will_v not_o fail_v in_o give_v all_o expression_n of_o civility_n that_o be_v proper_a and_o natural_a for_o the_o artificial_a and_o excessive_a the_o effect_n of_o vanity_n and_o hypocrisy_n he_o use_v they_o not_o he_o have_v the_o civility_n of_o a_o courtier_n and_o the_o heartiness_n of_o a_o friend_n in_o short_a his_o countenance_n and_o behaviour_n and_o word_n to_o all_o be_v such_o as_o you_o may_v read_v in_o they_o real_a goodwill_n i_o add_v only_o two_o more_o this_o man_n be_v humble_a and_o meek_a the_o true_a cause_n as_o well_o as_o the_o effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o most_o man_n pride_n be_v that_o they_o consider_v few_o or_o none_o beside_o themselves_o the_o proud_a man_n therefore_o love_v himself_o too_o much_o because_o he_o love_v not_o other_o man_n at_o all_o whereas_o the_o man_n who_o live_v under_o the_o power_n of_o this_o principle_n he_o value_v other_o man_n merit_n as_o well_o as_o his_o own_o and_o desire_v they_o may_v have_v the_o praise_v due_a to_o they_o and_o do_v not_o think_v himself_o disparage_v when_o another_o be_v commend_v or_o if_o by_o accident_n that_o come_v credit_n to_o the_o welfare_n of_o other_o man_n and_o the_o public_a in_o short_a where_o a_o man_n love_v other_o he_o desire_v that_o for_o they_o which_o he_o do_v for_o himself_o and_o consequent_o that_o they_o may_v have_v the_o honour_n do_v they_o which_o they_o deserve_v as_o he_o will_v not_o be_v debar_v of_o the_o praise_n he_o merit_v and_o for_o meekness_n this_o love_n cover_v a_o multitude_n of_o fault_n and_o so_o make_v those_o not_o to_o be_v which_o be_v so_o far_o be_v it_o from_o multiply_v and_o magnify_v they_o from_o increase_v their_o number_n and_o aggravation_n it_o do_v not_o make_v fault_n where_o they_o be_v not_o or_o where_o they_o be_v do_v not_o make_v they_o worse_o do_v not_o call_v a_o little_a wart_n a_o wen_n but_o rather_o where_o they_o can_v be_v extenuate_v lessen_v they_o and_o consider_v which_o be_v the_o miscarriage_n of_o surprise_a infirmity_n and_o unwilling_a mistake_n and_o distinguish_v between_o they_o and_o those_o good_a thing_n i_o mention_v which_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v quiet_a and_o tranquillity_n joy_n and_o pleasure_n which_o i_o therefore_o join_v together_o in_o my_o discourse_n because_o they_o be_v not_o often_o part_v in_o nature_n and_o their_o opposite_n go_v under_o the_o same_o name_n of_o trouble_n and_o because_o where_o they_o be_v as_o they_o shall_v be_v they_o qualify_v befriend_v each_o other_o they_o be_v blaâ—â—ablâ—_n for_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v too_o much_o becalm_v that_o it_o can_v move_v its_o 〈◊〉_d may_v be_v freeze_v up_o by_o a_o stoical_a apathy_n which_o will_v not_o only_o rid_v it_o of_o the_o evil_a and_o painful_a but_o deprive_v it_o also_o of_o the_o good_a and_o pleasant_a â—_z that_o which_o do_v 〈◊〉_d be_v very_o opposite_a to_o its_o be_v capable_a it_o be_v the_o crown_n of_o all_o our_o work_n the_o natural_a reward_n of_o our_o labour_n and_o if_o our_o action_n be_v virtuous_a it_o be_v a_o sure_a reward_n it_o be_v the_o universal_a goodness_n where_o it_o be_v practise_v and_o become_v a_o temper_n contribute_v to_o the_o quiet_a and_o pleasure_n of_o soul_n some_o of_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o our_o disquiet_n
