in_o adam_n and_o be_v partaker_n with_o he_o in_o his_o sin_n whether_o i_o say_v if_o this_o be_v so_o all_o soul_n must_v not_o of_o necessity_n have_v be_v in_o adam_n for_o as_o much_o as_o they_o be_v the_o most_o excellent_a and_o by_o many_o degree_n the_o most_o valuable_a part_n of_o man_n and_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o body_n if_o any_o one_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a that_o all_o soul_n shall_v have_v be_v in_o adam_n at_o that_o time_n that_o he_o sin_v for_o that_o god_n have_v impute_v the_o sin_n of_o adam_n to_o his_o posterity_n because_o they_o all_o as_o to_o their_o body_n descend_v from_o he_o but_o i_o will_v demand_v of_o those_o what_o reasonableness_n or_o equity_n there_o will_v be_v in_o this_o if_o god_n in_o create_v soul_n shall_v make_v they_o sinful_a for_o the_o soul_n of_o adam_n posterity_n can_v not_o sin_n nor_o consent_n to_o his_o sin_n because_o according_a to_o their_o opinion_n they_o be_v not_o yet_o create_v and_o therefore_o can_v be_v now_o create_v sinful_a by_o a_o imaginary_a imputation_n of_o adam_n sin_n neither_o do_v those_o who_o preach_v these_o devise_a fable_n ever_o consider_v how_o repugnant_a the_o same_o be_v to_o the_o essence_n of_o god_n for_o what_o will_v become_v of_o the_o divine_a justice_n if_o god_n punish_v man_n for_o a_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v some_o thousand_o of_o year_n before_o ever_o they_o be_v create_v and_o consequent_o can_v not_o be_v guilty_a of_o or_o accessary_a to_o the_o same_o that_o this_o be_v absolute_o inconsistent_a with_o god_n justice_n see_v §_o 35._o but_o perhhaps_o it_o will_v be_v say_v that_o soul_n be_v therefore_o create_v sinful_a by_o god_n because_o they_o be_v to_o be_v join_v to_o asinful_a body_n descend_v from_o adam_n but_o let_v these_o show_v i_o the_o least_o shadow_n or_o appearance_n of_o reason_n there_o be_v in_o this_o consequence_n viz._n that_o god_n create_v soul_n sinful_a because_o the_o body_n to_o which_o they_o be_v to_o be_v join_v be_v so_o for_o my_o part_n i_o bold_o assert_v that_o no_o man_n will_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o give_v i_o any_o reason_n coherent_a in_o all_o its_o part_n and_o consistent_a with_o the_o divive_a wisdom_n why_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v make_v sinful_a because_o the_o inferior_a and_o servile_a part_n be_v so_o but_o suppose_v we_o shall_v grant_v they_o this_o their_o absurd_a position_n viz._n that_o soul_n because_o of_o the_o sinful_a body_n to_o which_o they_o must_v be_v join_v have_v sin_n impute_v to_o they_o by_o god_n and_o be_v therefore_o create_v sinful_a yet_o i_o further_o demand_v of_o they_o what_o reason_n there_o be_v why_o the_o soul_n when_o they_o be_v first_o create_v at_o the_o instant_n of_o generation_n be_v thrust_v into_o sinful_a body_n or_o what_o communion_n or_o fellowship_n they_o can_v have_v with_o such_o sinful_a body_n see_v that_o they_o never_o commit_v any_o sin_n will_v they_o say_v that_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o then_o it_o must_v follow_v from_o hence_o that_o as_o soon_o as_o god_n have_v create_v a_o sinless_a soul_n his_o will_n and_o pleasure_n be_v immediate_o to_o send_v it_o into_o a_o sinful_a body_n but_o what_o reasonableness_n or_o equity_n will_v there_o be_v in_o this_o that_o god_n shall_v punish_v a_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o sinful_a by_o imputation_n before_o ever_o it_o have_v commit_v any_o sin_n and_o this_o mere_o for_o the_o sinful_a body_n sake_n in_o which_o she_o be_v to_o dwell_v moreover_o when_o they_o say_v that_o god_n do_v not_o bestow_v this_o perfection_n upon_o soul_n in_o their_o creation_n because_o of_o the_o imputation_n of_o adam_n sin_n do_v not_o they_o hereby_o intimate_v that_o god_n do_v not_o create_v soul_n perfect_a viz._n so_o as_o adam_n soul_n be_v create_v for_o this_o must_v be_v their_o meaning_n when_o they_o say_v that_o god_n now_o create_v soul_n perverse_a for_o imperfect_a be_v the_o same_o as_o perverse_a but_o why_o then_o do_v they_o tell_v we_o upon_o other_o occasion_n that_o whatsoever_o god_n create_v be_v very_o good_a and_o that_o god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o sin_n for_o these_o thing_n be_v contradictory_n to_o one_o another_o and_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o divine_a attribute_n be_v make_v to_o oppose_v and_o clash_v against_o one_o another_o in_o the_o second_o place_n when_o they_o assert_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v then_o first_o create_v when_o their_o body_n be_v generate_v by_o their_o parent_n what_o shadow_n of_o wisdom_n or_o reason_n be_v there_o in_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o soul_n be_v create_v at_o once_o and_o all_o alike_o that_o one_o soul_n shall_v be_v thrust_v into_o a_o beggar_n body_n or_o into_o some_o other_o more_o miserable_a circumstantiated_a lodging_n and_o another_o advance_v to_o a_o royal_a state_n and_o dignity_n by_o mean_n of_o the_o body_n to_o which_o it_o be_v prefer_v that_o one_o shall_v be_v bear_v of_o good_a and_o another_o of_o bad_a parent_n when_o yet_o in_o worthiness_n they_o be_v all_o of_o they_o equal_a and_o all_o of_o they_o alike_o pure_a and_o sinless_a will_v they_o say_v that_o god_n
do_v this_o accord_v to_o his_o freewill_n and_o that_o he_o may_v and_o can_v thus_o differrent_o dispose_v of_o soul_n at_o his_o good_a pleasure_n but_o indeed_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o quite_o contrary_a when_o we_o â—ome_v to_o examine_v this_o matter_n and_o that_o god_n neither_o will_v nor_o can_v do_v any_o such_o â—hing_n as_o have_v be_v show_v §_o 22_o and_o 36._o three_o if_o it_o according_a to_o they_o be_v never_o create_v but_o at_o the_o generation_n of_o the_o body_n four_o see_v that_o the_o body_n be_v generate_v by_o the_o parent_n and_o consequent_o must_v have_v be_v in_o be_v before_o it_o be_v generate_v for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o least_o body_n be_v not_o now_o produce_v the_o essentiality_n whereof_o be_v not_o in_o the_o creation_n no_o reason_n can_v be_v allege_v why_o god_n shall_v not_o as_o well_o have_v create_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o the_o beginning_n as_o that_o which_o be_v corporeal_a but_o than_o it_o will_v be_v ask_v where_o be_v then_o all_o those_o soul_n that_o be_v create_v together_o in_o the_o creation_n see_v they_o have_v not_o yet_o any_o body_n of_o their_o own_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o be_v all_o in_o adam_n as_o in_o their_o first_o parent_n from_o hom_n they_o afterward_o come_v forth_o but_o this_o will_v bâ—_n think_v very_o strange_a that_o so_o many_o thousand_o of_o soul_n shall_v be_v in_o one_o man_n yeâ—_n be_v not_o this_o at_o all_o impossible_a for_o how_o many_o thousand_o image_n of_o man_n and_o other_o thing_n have_v we_o within_o we_o that_o we_o have_v see_v now_o all_o these_o image_n that_o we_o have_v receive_v from_o abroad_o be_v likewise_o spiritual_a being_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o observation_n about_o man_n §_o 44.45_o and_o yet_o they_o take_v up_o no_o space_n in_o we_o wherefore_o as_o a_o man_n may_v have_v million_o of_o spiritual_a being_n or_o image_n in_o he_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o be_v capable_a also_o of_o have_v many_o thousand_o of_o soul_n in_o he_o because_o they_o also_o be_v spiritual_a being_n and_o therefore_o take_v up_o no_o room_n in_o he_o all_o which_o soul_n by_o mean_n of_o generation_n be_v as_o it_o be_v wrought_v out_o from_o he_o or_o bring_v forth_o to_o outward_a manifestation_n in_o distinct_a body_n and_o time_n and_o to_o make_v this_o more_o clear_a by_o a_o example_n we_o see_v that_o a_o tree_n bring_v forth_o its_o fruit_n every_o year_n which_o it_o can_v not_o do_v if_o the_o life_n and_o essence_n of_o those_o fruit_n have_v not_o be_v in_o the_o tree_n before_o their_o production_n so_o that_o this_o life_n lie_v so_o long_o hide_v in_o the_o tree_n then_o till_o according_a to_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n the_o time_n of_o bring_v for_o fruit_n be_v come_v §_o 89._o and_o for_o as_o much_o as_o from_o §_o 87._o it_o be_v evident_a that_o soul_n be_v create_v altogether_o by_o god_n in_o the_o creation_n this_o likewise_o overthrow_v that_o position_n which_o assert_n that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v generate_v by_o the_o parent_n viz._n after_o the_o same_o manner_n as_o the_o body_n be_v for_o as_o in_o generation_n some_o part_n of_o the_o corporeal_a substance_n go_v away_o from_o the_o parent_n so_o if_o they_o be_v generator_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o body_n they_o will_v loose_v some_o part_n of_o their_o soul_n in_o the_o act_n of_o generation_n which_o be_v impossible_a for_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o spirit_n according_a to_o §_o 83.84_o must_v consequent_o be_v indivisible_a §_o 90._o see_v therefore_o that_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n do_v uphold_v and_o form_v its_o own_o body_n as_o have_v be_v show_v §_o 82._o and_o have_v exi_v together_o with_o it_o in_o the_o creation_n §_o 87._o and_o consequent_o proceed_v from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o begin_n with_o it_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o body_n take_v its_o original_a for_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o consist_v of_o the_o very_a same_o principle_n whence_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o body_n do_v proceed_v she_o can_v never_o have_v any_o communion_n or_o fellowship_n with_o the_o body_n because_o two_o thing_n of_o a_o different_a original_a can_v never_o unite_v or_o cooperate_a except_o it_o be_v by_o mean_n of_o a_o three_o that_o partake_v of_o both_o their_o essence_n moreover_o for_o as_o much_o as_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o creation_n as_o well_o as_o body_n and_o that_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o the_o creation_n do_v proceed_v from_o one_o only_a it_o follow_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o body_n take_v its_o original_a now_o body_n consist_v of_o two_o thing_n viz._n fire_n and_o water_n and_o this_o fire_n and_o water_n be_v spiritual_a being_n in_o their_o beginning_n or_o principle_n whence_o they_o proceed_v as_o have_v be_v show_v at_o large_a in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n from_o §_o 7._o to_o 21._o and_o therefore_o we_o conclude_v that_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o a_o spiritual_a fiery_n and_o watery_a essence_n and_o that_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o these_o two_o we_o may_v be_v further_o inform_v from_o hence_o that_o the_o soul_n in_o scripture_n be_v also_o call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d breath_n as_o be_v show_v §_o 47._o and_o respiration_n his_o soul_n or_o life_n can_v maintain_v or_o preserve_v the_o body_n as_o be_v show_v at_o large_a in_o the_o consider_v ation_n concern_v man_n §_o 62.63_o 64_o and_o 68_o if_o so_o be_v therefore_o that_o the_o soul_n itself_o be_v sometime_o call_v breath_n and_o do_v enjoy_v or_o make_v use_n of_o breath_n or_o air_n for_o the_o preserve_n of_o her_o body_n consequent_o the_o soul_n must_v partake_v with_o the_o air_n and_o proceed_v from_o the_o same_o beginning_n as_o it_o do_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o air_n consist_v of_o a_o fiery_a and_o watery_a essence_n as_o in_o the_o say_a consideration_n §_o 65._o have_v be_v show_v but_o against_o this_o it_o will_v be_v object_v that_o if_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o body_n original_o come_v forth_o than_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a but_o that_o the_o soul_n may_v become_v corporeal_a to_o which_o objection_n i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v no_o necessary_a consequence_n because_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n that_o therefore_o the_o soul_n may_v become_v bodily_a as_o will_v appear_v from_o this_o example_n gold_n and_o iron_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n but_o yet_o we_o can_v conclude_v from_o hence_o that_o gold_n can_v be_v change_v into_o iron_n because_o gold_n be_v advance_v to_o that_o degree_n of_o perfection_n that_o it_o always_o abide_v gold_n to_o which_o iron_n have_v not_o yet_o attain_v and_o therefore_o be_v subject_a to_o rust_v and_o turn_v to_o earth_n again_o but_o the_o perfection_n of_o gold_n appear_v in_o this_o that_o it_o endure_v the_o fire_n without_o loss_n or_o diminution_n which_o iron_n do_v not_o but_o be_v burn_v and_o consume_v by_o it_o yet_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v true_a also_o that_o be_v reason_n teach_v we_o and_o it_o must_v be_v true_a in_o nature_n though_o we_o can_v give_v a_o ocular_a demonstration_n of_o it_o that_o see_v iron_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n as_o gold_n do_v it_o can_v also_o arrive_v through_o manifold_a die_a and_o suffer_v to_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o perfection_n which_o gold_n have_v and_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v concern_v the_o soul_n and_o that_o which_o be_v bodily_a that_o though_o they_o both_o proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n yet_o do_v it_o not_o follow_v therefore_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v become_v corporeal_a because_o she_o be_v arrive_v to_o that_o perfection_n which_o render_v her_o indivisible_a and_o unchangeable_a in_o her_o essence_n though_o it_o be_v a_o true_a
consequence_n that_o the_o body_n forasmuch_o as_o it_o consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n as_o the_o soul_n do_v that_o it_o may_v arrive_v to_o that_o degree_n of_o perfection_n as_o to_o become_v spiritual_a in_o the_o second_o place_n if_o so_o be_v the_o soul_n or_o life_n can_v become_v corporeal_a then_o may_v all_o thing_n in_o time_n come_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o without_o any_o operation_n at_o all_o which_o can_v never_o be_v because_o god_n have_v bring_v forth_o all_o thing_n in_o order_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n must_v be_v wrought_v out_o that_o be_v bring_v forth_o to_o manifestation_n according_a to_o due_a order_n which_o can_v be_v do_v without_o activity_n and_o not_o always_o continue_v dead_a and_o deprive_v of_o all_o efficiency_n three_o if_o the_o life_n of_o every_o thing_n can_v become_v bodily_a than_o the_o creature_n may_v bring_v forth_o young_a of_o a_o different_a kind_n from_o themselves_o viz._n sheep_n may_v bring_v forth_o bird_n and_o man_n sheep_n etc._n etc._n for_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n in_o body_n but_o what_o they_o derive_v from_o their_o life_n which_o according_a to_o its_o peculiar_a efficiency_n and_o property_n do_v form_v its_o own_o body_n besides_o if_o the_o life_n of_o every_o creature_n can_v become_v corporeal_a than_o all_o of_o they_o will_v have_v the_o same_o flesh_n and_o form_n forasmuch_o as_o they_o partake_v of_o the_o same_o nourishment_n but_o nature_n teach_v we_o the_o contrary_a viz._n that_o each_o kind_n have_v its_o own_o form_n and_o flesh_n whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o each_o kind_n do_v unchangeable_o retain_v its_o own_o life_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 33._o but_o some_o will_v object_v if_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o life_n of_o other_o creature_n be_v derive_v what_o perfection_n then_o have_v man_n more_o than_o they_o to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o all_o life_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n yet_o do_v they_o differ_v in_o their_o efficiency_n and_o perfection_n for_o all_o creature_n have_v not_o the_o same_o understanding_n and_o wisdom_n and_o what_o creature_n have_v more_o wisdom_n than_o man_n who_o can_v rule_v all_o creature_n beside_o man_n have_v this_o prerogative_n also_o above_o all_o creature_n who_o be_v make_v according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n of_o which_o see_v chapter_n second_o and_o the_o observation_n concern_v man_n §_o 46.47_o etc._n etc._n §_o 91._o see_v therefore_o that_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n with_o the_o body_n whence_o may_v be_v understand_v that_o the_o soul_n can_v work_v on_o the_o body_n so_o from_o the_o same_o head_n we_o may_v gather_v how_o the_o soul_n my_o become_v sinful_a as_o shall_v be_v show_v when_o we_o come_v to_o treat_v of_o the_o fall_n of_o man._n only_o thus_o much_o i_o shall_v say_v here_o by_o the_o by_o that_o it_o will_v be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n ever_o to_o make_v out_o how_o the_o â—oul_n be_v become_v sinful_a save_v only_o by_o this_o way_n and_o because_o man_n know_v little_a of_o the_o nature_n and_o essence_n of_o thing_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o torment_v and_o vex_v themselves_o with_o that_o old_a and_o long_o bandy_v question_n how_o or_o by_o what_o mean_v the_o soul_n be_v become_v sinful_a §_o 92._o but_o some_o perhaps_o will_v query_n see_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v become_v sinful_a by_o what_o mean_n can_v she_o be_v deliver_v from_o sin_n to_o which_o we_o answer_v that_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v meliorate_v by_o recover_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n as_o have_v be_v show_v at_o large_a §_o 61.62_o 63._o etc._n etc._n the_o mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o melioration_n and_o recover_v the_o image_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v show_v in_o the_o sequel_n §_o 93._o and_o because_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v in_o order_n to_o the_o full_a elucidation_n of_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o soul_n and_o whither_o they_o pass_v after_o death_n we_o will_v put_v off_o the_o handle_n this_o question_n to_o that_o part_n wherein_o we_o intend_v to_o treat_v of_o the_o restitution_n of_o a_o sinner_n chap._n v._o of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o principle_n whereof_o it_o do_v consist_v together_o with_o the_o state_n of_o adam_n before_o the_o fall_n §_o 94._o we_o have_v show_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v of_o the_o same_o principle_n whence_o the_o body_n be_v produce_v as_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o body_n proceed_v from_o the_o same_o principle_n whereof_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o that_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o proper_a life_n over_o and_o above_o its_o be_v govern_v by_o the_o soul_n or_o its_o principal_a spirit_n for_o when_o the_o soul_n or_o life_n do_v cease_v from_o its_o former_a operation_n and_o that_o the_o body_n thereupon_o die_v yet_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o these_o dead_a body_n afterward_o turn_v to_o worm_n etc._n etc._n yea_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o sometime_o the_o hair_n and_o nail_n of_o a_o dead_a body_n do_v grow_v which_o prove_v that_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n beside_o the_o soul_n or_o general_a life_n which_o uphold_v the_o body_n in_o its_o form_n or_o essence_n as_o long_o as_o she_o continue_v in_o her_o former_a work_v or_o efficiency_n §_o 95._o but_o some_o will_v ask_v why_o since_o the_o body_n have_v its_o own_o life_n man_n do_v notwithstanding_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o soul_n or_o life_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o i_o desire_v the_o enquirer_n to_o consider_v that_o man_n body_n be_v feed_v by_o the_o creature_n he_o enjoy_v and_o partake_v of_o the_o life_n of_o they_o which_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n if_o it_o be_v not_o transmute_v in_o man_n so_o as_o to_o comply_v with_o the_o operation_n or_o efficiency_n of_o man_n it_o can_v never_o be_v of_o use_n for_o the_o support_n or_o preservation_n of_o man._n to_o the_o end_n therefore_o that_o the_o creature_n and_o their_o life_n may_v be_v for_o the_o sustenance_n of_o the_o body_n of_o man_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v his_o own_o life_n and_o that_o the_o say_a life_n shall_v be_v master_n and_o dispose_v of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n according_a to_o its_o pleasure_n as_o a_o general_n govern_v and_o command_v his_o whole_a army_n wherefore_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o soul_n or_o life_n that_o may_v superintend_v rule_n and_o govern_v all_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o his_o body_n of_o the_o soul_n or_o central_n spirit_n have_v be_v treat_v in_o the_o observation_n concern_v man._n §_o 33.51_o §_o 96._o these_o principle_n now_o whereof_o the_o body_n and_o all_o creature_n whether_o corporeal_a or_o spiritual_a do_v
