far_o as_o to_o be_v persuade_v of_o such_o a_o thing_n and_o when_o by_o consider_v they_o come_v to_o be_v persuade_v either_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o future_a state_n or_o that_o it_o be_v far_o more_o probable_a that_o there_o be_v than_o that_o there_o be_v not_o than_o they_o can_v hardly_o forbear_v to_o consider_v and_o think_v more_o or_o less_o what_o be_v like_a to_o become_v of_o they_o in_o that_o future_a state_n and_o upon_o supposition_n that_o they_o be_v persuade_v in_o their_o own_o mind_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o future_a state_n they_o can_v no_o more_o put_v off_o a_o desire_n of_o be_v happy_a in_o it_o than_o they_o can_v put_v off_o nature_n itself_o and_o cease_v to_o be_v man_n they_o can_v discern_v a_o difference_n between_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a in_o very_a many_o thing_n and_o the_o different_a tendency_n of_o they_o to_o their_o happiness_n or_o misery_n in_o the_o future_a state_n they_o can_v though_o they_o will_v think_v that_o evil_n tend_v to_o the_o happiness_n and_o good_a to_o the_o misery_n of_o that_o future_a state_n but_o the_o contrary_n they_o can_v consider_v and_o think_v on_o such_o thing_n as_o by_o which_o the_o holy_a scripture_n direct_v to_o this_o happiness_n as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v the_o content_n of_o other_o book_n before_o man_n have_v debauch_v their_o nature_n by_o a_o custom_n of_o sin_v there_o be_v hardly_o any_o but_o have_v some_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o spring_n up_o more_o or_o less_o in_o their_o mind_n and_o to_o what_o degree_n they_o do_v so_o they_o have_v a_o tendency_n to_o bring_v man_n to_o a_o belief_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o a_o good_a life_n as_o i_o shall_v further_o show_v afterward_o 3._o the_o subsequent_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v that_o by_o which_o the_o former_a consideration_n which_o have_v some_o tendency_n to_o faith_n be_v heighten_v improve_v and_o carry_v on_o until_o such_o a_o faith_n be_v produce_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o be_v a_o believe_v unto_o righteousness_n and_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v do_v chief_o in_o some_o such_o way_n as_o this_o first_o by_o present_v the_o objective_a grace_n of_o god_n the_o gospel_n more_o frequent_o to_o their_o consideration_n and_o by_o hold_v their_o thought_n more_o intent_o upon_o the_o great_a and_o concern_v matter_n contain_v therein_o second_o by_o assist_v the_o intellective_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o more_o frequent_a and_o repeat_v consideration_n to_o understand_v and_o discern_v the_o nature_n and_o import_n of_o the_o great_a doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o contain_v god_n design_n of_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n for_o the_o recovery_n of_o lose_a man_n from_o sin_n and_o destruction_n for_o sin_n by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v a_o great_a light_n break_v into_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o the_o gospel_n report_v be_v better_a discern_v than_o it_o be_v before_o and_o so_o be_v a_o man_n own_o great_a concern_v for_o eternity_n which_o be_v therein_o lay_v open_a and_o thereby_o also_o be_v the_o mind_n prevail_v upon_o to_o assent_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o saviour_n doctrine_n in_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o will_v to_o consent_v to_o act_v according_a to_o the_o great_a concern_v of_o a_o man_n soul_n and_o therefore_o man_n conversion_n be_v in_o scripture_n describe_v by_o their_o be_v turn_v from_o darkness_n to_o light_n by_o their_o be_v enlighten_v and_o have_v the_o eye_n of_o their_o understanding_n open_v and_o the_o like_a and_o sometime_o this_o work_n of_o faith_n or_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o former_a work_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o mind_n viz._n the_o hold_v the_o mind_n and_o thought_n unto_o a_o more_o close_o serious_a and_o intent_n consideration_n of_o the_o great_a thing_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o a_o man_n own_o great_a concern_v therein_o thus_o in_o jam._n 1.25_o whoso_o look_v into_o the_o perfect_a law_n of_o liberty_n and_o continue_v therein_o i.e._n continue_v look_v into_o it_o he_o be_v not_o a_o forgetful_a hearer_n but_o a_o doer_n of_o the_o work_n this_o man_n shall_v be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n here_o we_o see_v one_o that_o continue_v his_o look_v into_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o law_n of_o liberty_n and_o a_o forgetful_a hearer_n be_v oppose_v to_o each_o other_o and_o so_o be_v a_o forgetful_a hearer_n and_o a_o doer_n of_o the_o work_n by_o which_o it_o plain_o appear_v that_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o one_o hear_v end_n in_o the_o do_n of_o the_o work_n and_o in_o be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n and_o the_o other_o do_v not_o be_v for_o that_o the_o one_o consider_v and_o continue_v from_o time_n to_o time_n serious_o to_o consider_v the_o weight_n and_o importance_n of_o what_o he_o hear_v and_o of_o his_o own_o great_a concern_v in_o it_o but_o the_o other_o do_v not_o but_o be_v a_o forgetful_a hearer_n as_o little_a mind_n it_o as_o if_o he_o be_v not_o concern_v in_o it_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v doubtless_o mean_v by_o another_o metaphor_n which_o
the_o same_o apostle_n have_v use_v verse_n 21._o where_o he_o call_v the_o word_n which_o be_v able_a to_o save_v the_o soul_n a_o engraft_a word_n for_o if_o the_o word_n be_v able_a to_o save_v the_o soul_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o engraft_a word_n than_o it_o become_v a_o effectual_a mean_n of_o salvation_n as_o it_o be_v fasten_v upon_o and_o let_v into_o the_o soul_n by_o serious_a consideration_n on_o for_o consideration_n answer_v the_o metaphor_n of_o engraft_v here_o use_v if_o the_o juice_n of_o a_o cyon_n the_o branch_n of_o a_o good_a tree_n turn_v the_o sap_n of_o a_o crab_n tree_n stock_n into_o its_o own_o nature_n and_o cause_v it_o to_o bring_v forth_o better_a fruit_n than_o before_o it_o be_v by_o mean_n of_o be_v let_v into_o it_o and_o bind_v fast_o upon_o it_o that_o it_o do_v so_o in_o like_a manner_n if_o the_o word_n turn_v the_o temper_n of_o the_o soul_n into_o its_o own_o nature_n by_o mingle_v with_o it_o it_o be_v by_o mean_n of_o consideration_n which_o unite_v the_o word_n and_o the_o mind_n and_o bind_v it_o upon_o the_o soul_n for_o the_o word_n do_v not_o work_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o charm_n or_o spell_n but_o operate_v in_o a_o way_n of_o rational_a consideration_n for_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n work_v by_o the_o word_n when_o man_n with_o open_a face_n behold_v as_o in_o a_o glass_n the_o glory_n of_o the_o lord_n they_o be_v change_v into_o the_o same_o image_n as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n 2_o cor._n 3.18_o the_o holy_a spirit_n work_v this_o change_n indeed_o but_o it_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n and_o by_o the_o gospel_n look_v into_o behold_v and_o well_o consider_v this_o consider_a temper_n of_o mind_n seem_v to_o be_v signify_v by_o the_o opposition_n to_o those_o other_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o for_o a_o total_a want_n of_o consideration_n immediate_o lose_v all_o they_o hear_v as_o those_o do_v who_o be_v resemble_v by_o the_o highway_n on_o which_o some_o seed_n fall_v where_o it_o have_v no_o cover_n at_o all_o and_o in_o opposition_n to_o those_o who_o for_o want_v of_o much_o consideration_n wither_v when_o persecution_n come_v like_o those_o resemble_v by_o the_o rocky_a ground_n on_o which_o some_o of_o the_o seed_n be_v sow_o where_o there_o be_v not_o much_o earth_n to_o give_v it_o sufficient_a root_n and_o nourishment_n and_o also_o in_o opposition_n to_o those_o who_o through_o a_o insufficient_a degree_n of_o consideration_n have_v the_o word_n drive_v out_o of_o their_o mind_n or_o weaken_v in_o its_o operation_n by_o the_o overpower_v thought_n care_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o present_a life_n as_o those_o resemble_v by_o the_o thorny_a ground_n have_v and_o so_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n to_o perfection_n but_o only_o the_o ear_n without_o the_o full_a corn_n in_o the_o ear_n luke_n 8._o in_o this_o thing_n than_o which_o we_o call_v consideration_n seem_v to_o lie_v the_o difference_n between_o those_o who_o hear_v the_o gospel_n so_o as_o effectual_o to_o believe_v it_o and_o those_o other_o several_a sort_n of_o hearer_n who_o though_o they_o hear_v it_o yet_o do_v not_o believe_v it_o to_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n for_o which_o cause_n it_o may_v well_o be_v that_o the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n press_v the_o christian_n who_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o wither_v like_o the_o corn_n which_o have_v not_o much_o earth_n through_o heat_n of_o persecution_n to_o give_v the_o more_o earnest_a heed_n to_o the_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v lest_o at_o any_o time_n they_o shall_v let_v they_o slip_v viz._n out_o of_o their_o mind_n heb._n 2.1_o david_n no_o doubt_n well_o know_v of_o how_o great_a concernment_n it_o be_v to_o have_v good_a thing_n keep_v warm_a upon_o the_o mind_n by_o often_o repeat_v consideration_n when_o he_o pray_v thus_o unto_o god_n keep_v this_o for_o ever_o in_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o he_o that_o have_v not_o from_o he_o shall_v be_v take_v even_o that_o which_o he_o have_v by_o which_o our_o saviour_n seem_v to_o mean_v that_o man_n shall_v receive_v benefit_n by_o the_o gospel_n according_a as_o they_o attend_v to_o and_o consider_v their_o own_o great_a concern_v handle_v in_o it_o and_o that_o if_o by_o thus_o do_v they_o do_v not_o neglect_v but_o use_n and_o improve_v this_o antecedent_n grace_n that_o then_o more_o shall_v be_v give_v to_o wit_n more_o mean_n and_o more_o help_n to_o believe_v which_o be_v the_o subsequent_a grace_n i_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o by_o which_o man_n be_v thorough_o enable_v to_o believe_v unto_o righteousness_n and_o so_o unto_o pardon_n and_o life_n these_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n which_o according_a to_o our_o translation_n we_o read_v take_v heed_n what_o you_o hear_v be_v render_v by_o dr._n hammond_n consider_v what_o you_o hear_v so_o that_o it_o seem_v take_v heed_n what_o you_o hear_v do_v in_o this_o place_n signify_v take_v heed_n to_o what_o you_o hear_v or_o to_o give_v heed_n to_o it_o as_o those_o do_v who_o consider_v of_o it_o and_o weigh_v the_o import_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o they_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o and_o if_o yea_o then_o how_o far_o and_o the_o reason_n which_o our_o saviour_n add_v to_o enforce_v this_o precept_n and_o direction_n of_o he_o show_v this_o to_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o it_o for_o he_o say_v with_o what_o measure_n we_o meet_v it_o shall_v be_v measure_v to_o we_o to_o wit_n in_o the_o blessing_n and_o benefit_n design_v we_o by_o send_v the_o gospel_n to_o we_o which_o be_v to_o bring_v we_o to_o believe_v unto_o righteousness_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v save_v and_o he_o add_v again_o that_o to_o those_o that_o hear_v viz._n that_o thus_o hear_v more_o shall_v be_v give_v and_o back_n this_o also_o with_o that_o general_a rule_n mention_v five_o time_n in_o three_o of_o the_o evangelist_n for_o he_o that_o have_v to_o he_o shall_v be_v give_v and_o he_o that_o have_v not_o from_o he_o shall_v be_v take_v even_o that_o which_o he_o have_v now_o what_o can_v the_o measure_n be_v which_o be_v mete_v in_o hear_v the_o gospel_n to_o which_o the_o promise_n of_o receive_v more_o be_v make_v but_o a_o attentive_a consideration_n who_o it_o be_v that_o speak_v what_o he_o speak_v and_o of_o what_o concernment_n it_o
