the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o diligent_a make_v rich_a as_o diligence_n in_o a_o call_n make_v rich_a so_o where_o there_o be_v much_o diligence_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v much_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o no_o man_n get_v spiritual_a strength_n save_v they_o that_o be_v diligent_a and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v not_o strong_a in_o this_o spiritual_a strength_n because_o like_o the_o sluggard_n they_o be_v not_o diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n they_o take_v no_o pain_n for_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o get_v no_o increase_n for_o according_a unto_o the_o proportion_n of_o your_o pain_n so_o be_v the_o inward_a man_n strengthen_v and_o as_o you_o use_v they_o more_o diligent_o so_o you_o find_v the_o strength_n of_o they_o more_o operative_a and_o powerful_a for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n if_o you_o be_v not_o diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o feed_v the_o body_n it_o will_v wither_v and_o consume_v away_o and_o grow_v weak_a so_o if_o you_o feed_v not_o the_o soul_n diligent_o and_o use_v the_o mean_n constant_o you_o will_v breed_v weakness_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o secure_a and_o remiss_a you_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n the_o weak_a you_o be_v it_o may_v be_v you_o think_v it_o will_v not_o weaken_v you_o to_o neglect_v private_a prayer_n but_o omit_v it_o once_o and_o it_o will_v make_v you_o careless_a and_o the_o more_o you_o neglect_v the_o more_o unfit_a and_o undisposed_a you_o will_v find_v yourselves_o so_o you_o may_v think_v you_o may_v profane_v one_o sabbath_n neglect_v therein_o the_o duty_n require_v and_o serve_v not_o god_n but_o your_o own_o lust_n but_o belove_v it_o will_v make_v you_o secure_a the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v in_o this_o kind_a the_o more_o he_o may_v do_v for_o this_o be_v true_a in_o every_o art_n every_o act_n beget_v a_o habit_n and_o a_o habit_n bring_v custom_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a in_o good_a thing_n the_o beginning_n of_o good_a bring_v many_o particular_a good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o can_v but_o get_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n you_o shall_v find_v a_o supply_n of_o grace_n because_o christ_n say_v whosoever_o have_v to_o he_o shall_v be_v give_v he_o that_o have_v grace_n and_o be_v careful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n by_o god_n appointment_n he_o shall_v thrive_v in_o holiness_n for_o if_o you_o but_o once_o get_v the_o beginning_n of_o save_a grace_n and_o be_v industrious_a and_o vigilant_a and_o careful_a to_o employ_v they_o you_o will_v in_o time_n grow_v strong_a you_o know_v what_o christ_n say_v strong_a but_o for_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n observe_v these_o rule_n the_o first_o rule_n that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o observe_v if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_n effectual_a be_v this_o 1._o you_o must_v use_v all_o the_o mean_n for_o if_o you_o use_v but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o mean_v you_o will_v not_o grow_v strong_a at_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n a_o man_n for_o the_o health_n and_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n will_v use_v all_o mean_n labour_n in_o health_n physic_n in_o sickness_n recreation_n for_o the_o whet_n of_o the_o faculty_n in_o a_o word_n he_o will_v use_v every_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v strengthen_v the_o body_n thus_o you_o must_v do_v for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o must_v use_v all_o mean_n as_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n prayer_n meditation_n conference_n the_o communion_n of_o saint_n particular_a resolution_n to_o good_a or_o else_o the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a these_o be_v the_o food_n that_o the_o inward_a man_n feed_v upon_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o plant_n if_o you_o will_v have_v a_o plant_n to_o grow_v than_o you_o must_v set_v it_o in_o a_o good_a soil_n you_o must_v dig_v about_o it_o and_o dung_n it_o but_o if_o you_o be_v careless_a where_o you_o set_v it_o it_o will_v not_o prosper_v and_o thrive_v even_o so_o if_o you_o do_v not_o add_v fatness_n of_o soil_n unto_o the_o beginning_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o do_v not_o use_v all_o the_o mean_n as_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n and_o prayer_n the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a but_o wither_v and_o die_v you_o will_v be_v dwarf_n in_o grace_n and_o holiness_n the_o second_o rule_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_n effectual_a be_v this_o you_o must_v look_v that_o you_o perform_v rule_n holy_a duty_n strong_o for_o then_o the_o mean_n strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n when_o they_o be_v do_v with_o strong_a affection_n when_o he_o use_v they_o not_o remisse_o and_o cold_o for_o remiss_a action_n weakness_n the_o habit_n as_o for_o example_n take_v water_n that_o be_v exceed_o hot_a and_o put_v cold_a water_n to_o it_o and_o you_o will_v weaken_v it_o so_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o grace_n remiss_o and_o they_o will_v weaken_v the_o habit_n to_o good_a it_o will_v work_v a_o indisposition_n in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o do_v they_o strong_o with_o much_o zeal_n and_o strong_a
he_o shall_v say_v if_o you_o will_v know_v what_o will_v strengthen_v you_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n hence_o note_v this_o point_n that_o whatsoever_o save_v or_o sanctify_a grace_n or_o strength_n of_o grace_n every_o man_n have_v it_o all_o proceed_v from_o doctrine_n the_o sanctify_a spirit_n i_o say_v all_o the_o save_a grace_n all_o strength_n of_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o spirit_n yet_o the_o strengthner_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v all_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o father_n as_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o then_o throùgh_o christ_n by_o the_o spirit_n grace_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o these_o three_o distinction_n of_o the_o trinity_n be_v good_a the_o father_n be_v of_o himself_o the_o son_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n that_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n proceed_v from_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o be_v send_v unto_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n to_o work_v grace_n and_o holiness_n in_o they_o and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o only_a worker_n and_o strengthner_n of_o grace_n because_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o holy_a fountain_n as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v he_o must_v needs_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o way_n to_o get_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n be_v to_o get_v the_o holy_a spirit_n for_o in_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v two_o thing_n be_v require_v first_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v must_v proceed_v from_o a_o holy_a fountain_n but_o the_o spirit_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o pure_a god_n therefore_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n that_o he_o work_v second_o the_o second_o thing_n require_v in_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v be_v this_o that_o he_o subsist_v in_o sanctification_n that_o be_v that_o he_o depend_v not_o upon_o another_o for_o sanctification_n but_o that_o he_o be_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o work_v holiness_n and_o sanctification_n and_o this_o will_v appear_v in_o four_o thing_n the_o first_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v this_o by_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n a_o effectual_a worke._n operative_a and_o powerful_a faculty_n and_o that_o be_v do_v by_o rear_v the_o inward_a man_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o set_v up_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o shed_v abroad_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o bless_a effect_n of_o grace_n unto_o every_o faculty_n as_o the_o blood_n be_v infuse_v into_o every_o vein_n or_o as_o the_o soul_n go_v through_o every_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o give_v life_n unto_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n go_v through_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n and_o power_n into_o they_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o eph._n 1._o his_o effectual_a power_n that_o be_v he_o have_v such_o efficacy_n in_o work_v that_o he_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n unto_o the_o whole_a soul_n the_o second_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o he_o have_v set_v up_o the_o building_n and_o sweep_v every_o corner_n of_o the_o soul_n than_o he_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n by_o put_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o first_o when_o a_o man_n can_v do_v more_o than_o a_o natural_a man_n can_v do_v by_o nature_n than_o the_o spirit_n have_v add_v new_a habit_n as_o for_o example_n any_o hand_n can_v cut_v with_o a_o chissell_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n because_o no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v be_v reach_v it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o he_o can_v do_v water_n you_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n into_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o whether_o you_o have_v a_o new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v and_o experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v as_o i_o say_v it_o first_o build_v the_o house_n and_o sweep_v the_o room_n and_o then_o it_o fit_v and_o furnish_v the_o room_n with_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o it_o have_v give_v we_o new_a habit_n than_o it_o enable_v and_o help_v we_o to_o use_v these_o habit_n to_o good_a and_o herein_o appear_v the_o power_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o use_v that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o instrument_n that_o will_v sound_v well_o but_o he_o want_v skill_n to_o use_v it_o so_o many_o man_n they_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o because_o they_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v withal_o power_n to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v to_o use_v those_o habit_n which_o be_v in_o they_o thus_o samson_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n have_v power_n to_o use_v his_o strength_n act_v 4._o 32._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v bold_o that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n for_o you_o must_v know_v that_o there_o 32._o may_v be_v common_a grace_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v than_o it_o put_v strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n to_o work_v according_o thus_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o spirit_n come_v upon_o saul_n and_o he_o prophesy_v that_o be_v he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o before_o he_o can_v do_v and_o yet_o know_v that_o you_o may_v have_v true_a grace_n and_o yet_o now_o and_o then_o for_o the_o present_a want_n action_n you_o may_v want_v a_o power_n to_o do_v aught_o with_o it_o and_o it_o be_v then_o when_o the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o the_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o in_o heb._n 11._o brethren_n you_o have_v forget_v the_o consolation_n that_o be_v your_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o power_n be_v hide_v as_o dead_a and_o forget_v but_o the_o spirit_n will_v return_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v your_o power_n to_o good_a again_o the_o four_o way_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o because_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v first_o to_o pull_v down_o what_o man_n corruption_n have_v build_v and_o then_o to_o lay_v down_o the_o foundation_n of_o the_o spiritual_a building_n humility_n and_o then_o after_o to_o rear_v the_o build_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o for_o example_n if_o you_o will_v know_v whether_o the_o plant_n receive_v virtue_n from_o the_o olive_n or_o no_o than_o you_o must_v know_v that_o first_o they_o must_v be_v cut_v off_o and_o then_o they_o must_v be_v ingraft_v in_o and_o then_o see_v whether_o they_o have_v the_o fatness_n of_o the_o olive_n and_o then_o whether_o they_o bear_v the_o olive_n leave_v so_o a_o man_n that_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n by_o the_o word_n he_o shall_v see_v it_o by_o the_o ripeness_n of_o sin_n the_o corrupt_a branch_n the_o bitter_a fruit_n that_o come_v and_o be_v bring_v forth_o by_o he_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o the_o word_n by_o the_o spirit_n have_v cut_v you_o down_o and_o humble_v you_o thorough_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o then_o ingraft_v you_o into_o christ_n by_o work_v in_o you_o a_o save_n justify_v faith_n and_o not_o true_o or_o thorough_o and_o so_o not_o at_o all_o for_o what_o will_v it_o avail_v herod_n to_o forsake_v some_o sin_n and_o like_o john_n 20._o well_o in_o some_o thing_n if_o he_o will_v not_o forsake_v all_o and_o like_o john_n in_o the_o reproof_n of_o all_o in_o like_a manner_n what_o if_o you_o change_v your_o opinion_n of_o some_o sin_n what_o if_o you_o esteem_v some_o sin_n put_v on_o christ_n whole_o yet_o mistake_v i_o not_o i_o say_v not_o that_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v change_v for_o the_o soul_n in_o substance_n be_v the_o same_o as_o it_o be_v before_o but_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n when_o the_o spirit_n come_v it_o put_v new_a quality_n and_o habit_n into_o it_o altar_n and_o change_v the_o disposition_n of_o it_o give_v it_o that_o sense_n which_o before_o it_o feel_v not_o and_o that_o sight_n which_o before_o it_o see_v not_o hence_o it_o be_v thorough_o change_v in_o
when_o any_o earthly_a thing_n which_o his_o affection_n be_v glue_v to_o stand_v in_o competition_n with_o christ_n he_o have_v rather_o loose_v christ_n than_o he_o will_v loose_v all_o his_o pleasure_n in_o these_o earthly_a thing_n because_o he_o be_v not_o thorough_o humble_v humiliation_n come_v and_o take_v all_o impedimout_n away_o plough_n up_o the_o hardness_n of_o the_o heart_n set_v the_o affection_n on_o another_o object_n to_o delight_n in_o check_n the_o will_n open_v the_o mind_n awaken_v the_o conscience_n that_o christ_n be_v all_o to_o he_o in_o all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v compare_v unto_o the_o good_a ground_n that_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n the_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v fit_a to_o receive_v that_o good_a that_o will_v make_v it_o good_a till_o it_o be_v plough_v deep_a and_o humble_v than_o the_o word_n will_v grow_v the_o heart_n must_v be_v humble_v before_o grace_n will_v grow_v and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o effect_n that_o humiliation_n work_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v humble_v he_o will_v not_o part_v with_o christ_n for_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n therefore_o you_o see_v upon_o what_o ground_n humiliation_n be_v necessary_a because_o man_n will_v not_o receive_v christ_n till_o they_o be_v humble_v the_o second_o question_n be_v whether_o humiliation_n be_v 2._o simple_o and_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o and_o absolute_o 2._o necessary_a for_o it_o be_v not_o a_o simple_a grace_n and_o therefore_o not_o necessary_a on_o god_n part_n but_o it_o be_v a_o condition_n require_v on_o our_o part_n because_o we_o will_v not_o receive_v christ_n till_o we_o be_v humble_a i_o say_v it_o be_v not_o a_o simple_a grace_n or_o simple_o necessary_a for_o that_o which_o a_o man_n may_v exceed_v in_o be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a but_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v have_v too_o much_o of_o it_o that_o be_v he_o may_v exceed_v in_o the_o measure_n he_o may_v be_v over_o humble_a and_o therefore_o paul_n write_v unto_o the_o corinthian_n 2_o cor._n 2._o 7._o that_o they_o shall_v comfort_v the_o incestuous_a person_n lest_o he_o shall_v be_v swallow_v up_o of_o 7._o grief_n now_o that_o which_o be_v a_o simple_a grace_n a_o man_n can_v have_v too_o much_o of_o he_o can_v exceed_v in_o it_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n can_v have_v too_o much_o faith_n or_o repentance_n or_o love_n sanctification_n etc._n etc._n but_o the_o more_o he_o have_v of_o these_o the_o better_a now_o howsoever_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a on_o god_n part_n because_o he_o can_v save_v man_n without_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a condition_n on_o our_o part_n and_o in_o regard_n of_o we_o because_o we_o will_v not_o receive_v christ_n till_o we_o be_v humble_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o we_o preach_v the_o gospel_n general_o sometime_o sometime_o with_o the_o condition_n as_o in_o seeding_n without_o plough_v and_o there_o may_v be_v plough_v and_o yet_o no_o sow_v and_o sow_v and_o no_o reap_v so_o i_o say_v there_o may_v be_v save_v and_o sanctify_a grace_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n without_o humiliation_n and_o again_o there_o may_v be_v humiliation_n and_o no_o true_a grace_n at_o all_o or_o general_a grace_n but_o not_o special_a and_o save_a grace_n but_o the_o way_n to_o make_v we_o fit_a to_o receive_v grace_n be_v to_o be_v humble_a a_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o receive_v christ_n by_o a_o common_a light_n of_o knowledge_n and_o hereupon_o do_v many_o thing_n for_o christ_n but_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o take_v christ_n for_o his_o king_n aswell_o as_o a_o saviour_n except_o he_o be_v humble_v he_o will_v not_o take_v christ_n so_o as_o to_o be_v rule_v by_o his_o law_n and_o to_o live_v under_o his_o command_n he_o will_v not_o take_v he_o with_o loss_n and_o cross_n disgrace_n and_o reproach_n till_o he_o be_v humble_v he_o will_v not_o endure_v reproach_n he_o will_v be_v content_a to_o have_v christ_n but_o if_o christ_n must_v cost_v he_o all_o that_o than_o christ_n and_o he_o must_v part_v but_o when_o a_o man_n be_v thorough_o humble_v than_o he_o will_v part_v with_o all_o thing_n for_o christ_n nothing_o shall_v be_v so_o dear_a and_o precious_a unto_o he_o as_o christ_n will_v be_v if_o any_o thing_n come_v in_o competition_n with_o christ_n he_o will_v refuse_v it_o for_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v that_o humiliation_n be_v a_o necessary_a condition_n on_o our_o part_n though_o not_o a_o simple_a grace_n the_o three_o question_n be_v this_o whether_o there_o be_v quest._n any_o kind_n of_o humiliation_n more_o than_o one_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a sorrow_n answ._n the_o first_o be_v a_o preparative_n sorrow_n the_o second_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n the_o preparative_n sorrow_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n as_o it_o cause_v punishment_n or_o a_o sorrow_n for_o some_o judgement_n likely_a to_o ensue_v and_o pronounce_v against_o he_o but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o true_a sorrow_n a_o reprobate_n may_v have_v this_o sorrow_n which_o shall_v never_o be_v save_v this_o be_v the_o sorrow_n of_o judas_n and_o cain_n and_o ahab_n they_o sorrow_v but_o it_o be_v a_o false_a sorrow_n only_o a_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n it_o have_v his_o original_n from_o nature_n its_o object_n punishment_n and_o its_o end_n despair_n but_o the_o second_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n such_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o in_o 1_o corinth_n 7._o 7._o that_o work_v repentance_n 7._o not_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o that_o be_v it_o turn_v the_o heart_n to_o god_n it_o take_v away_o that_o flinty_a disposition_n of_o nature_n by_o the_o conveyance_n of_o grace_n it_o make_v the_o heart_n better_o it_o bring_v it_o into_o a_o frame_n of_o obedience_n it_o work_v a_o willingness_n in_o it_o to_o good_a so_o that_o the_o difference_n of_o they_o lie_v in_o this_o the_o one_o be_v outward_a but_o the_o other_o be_v inward_a the_o one_o be_v from_o grace_n the_o other_o be_v from_o temporal_a thing_n the_o one_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o other_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n the_o one_o will_v make_v a_o man_n fly_v unto_o christ_n because_o of_o our_o want_n as_o in_o the_o example_n of_o the_o publican_n especial_o in_o the_o prodigal_a son_n he_o never_o seek_v unto_o his_o father_n till_o he_o be_v thorough_o humble_v then_o he_o conclude_v i_o will_v go_v unto_o my_o father_n the_o other_o will_v set_v and_o push_v a_o man_n further_o from_o god_n this_o we_o see_v in_o cain_n and_o judas_n their_o sorrow_n make_v they_o run_v away_o from_o god_n but_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o humiliation_n never_o rest_v till_o it_o bring_v a_o sinner_n into_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n and_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o god_n presence_n than_o it_o will_v never_o rest_v till_o christ_n have_v make_v its_o peace_n with_o god_n but_o as_o i_o say_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v to_o drive_v a_o man_n further_o from_o christ._n adam_n have_v this_o sorrow_n he_o run_v and_o hide_v himself_o a_o carnal_a man_n will_v sorrow_n either_o for_o some_o present_a judgement_n upon_o his_o person_n or_o else_o upon_o his_o substance_n but_o yet_o it_o will_v not_o turn_v the_o heart_n that_o will_v not_o work_v a_o pliable_a disposition_n in_o the_o heart_n to_o yield_v obedience_n out_o of_o love_n in_o hatred_n to_o sin_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a that_o harden_v the_o heart_n the_o

it_o and_o so_o do_v it_o will_v make_v you_o humble_a and_o receive_v christ_n now_o that_o you_o may_v attain_v unto_o this_o and_o that_o the_o word_n by_o application_n may_v be_v effectual_a to_o humble_v you_o observe_v thesethree_a rule_n which_o i_o will_v lay_v down_o for_o your_o help_n herein_o the_o first_o rule_n be_v this_o as_o you_o must_v get_v knowledge_n rule_n before_o you_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o this_o case_n but_o if_o the_o spirit_n give_v thou_o a_o sight_n of_o sin_n present_o apply_v it_o unto_o the_o soul_n and_o that_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o because_o the_o labour_n will_v be_v less_o the_o pain_n less_o and_o the_o danger_n less_o when_o a_o bone_n be_v out_o of_o joint_n it_o be_v good_a set_v it_o while_o it_o be_v hot_a no_o man_n will_v defer_v it_o in_o such_o a_o case_n the_o defer_v of_o it_o will_v be_v with_o much_o more_o grief_n so_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v put_v out_o of_o love_n with_o sin_n if_o you_o then_o present_o apply_v the_o word_n unto_o it_o it_o will_v humble_v and_o change_v you_o but_o if_o you_o defer_v it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a and_o difficult_a thing_n to_o bring_v the_o heart_n unto_o repentance_n to_o bring_v it_o unto_o a_o good_a frame_n and_o soft_a disposition_n again_o therefore_o consider_v this_o and_o make_v good_a use_n of_o the_o opportunity_n the_o apostle_n give_v the_o reason_n why_o it_o be_v so_o hard_a to_o bring_v the_o heart_n unto_o a_o fit_a temper_n again_o heb._n 3._o 13._o take_v heed_n say_v he_o that_o you_o be_v not_o harden_v through_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o 13._o sin_n there_o be_v a_o deceit_n in_o every_o sin_n which_o if_o you_o look_v not_o unto_o it_o will_v beguile_v you_o if_o you_o do_v not_o put_v out_o the_o spark_n it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a thing_n for_o you_o to_o put_v out_o the_o flame_n to_o stop_v the_o passage_n of_o sin_n but_o you_o will_v be_v like_a unto_o those_o rom._n 2._o 5._o that_o have_v heart_n that_o can_v repent_v heart_n past_a 5._o grace_n therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o quench_v the_o spirit_n and_o this_o we_o do_v when_o we_o put_v off_o repentance_n and_o humiliation_n when_o we_o be_v by_o the_o spirit_n bring_v unto_o a_o sight_n of_o our_o sin_n the_o second_o rule_n be_v this_o as_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o must_v not_o put_v off_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o in_o the_o rule_n second_o place_n we_o must_v not_o make_v too_o much_o haste_n out_o of_o it_o you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o a_o little_a humiliation_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n a_o little_a sorrow_n a_o few_o tear_n or_o a_o few_o sigh_n but_o you_o must_v continue_v in_o it_o and_o it_o must_v remain_v in_o you_o the_o contrary_a unto_o this_o be_v that_o sorrow_n which_o the_o lord_n reprove_v in_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n isaiah_n 8._o 6._o be_v this_o the_o fast_o that_o i_o have_v choose_v that_o man_n shall_v hang_v down_o their_o head_n like_o a_o bulrush_n 6._o for_o a_o day_n they_o be_v affect_v with_o sin_n and_o it_o wrought_v some_o effect_n in_o they_o but_o it_o do_v not_o continue_v it_o be_v but_o a_o for_o a_o time_n it_o last_v not_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n hate_v it_o you_o must_v let_v sorrow_n breed_v in_o our_o heart_n you_o must_v let_v it_o still_o continue_v with_o you_o or_o else_o it_o will_v not_o judgement_n be_v upon_o they_o than_o they_o can_v humble_v themselves_o and_o cry_v and_o weep_v but_o when_o it_o be_v remove_v that_o be_v when_o they_o be_v free_v from_o the_o judgement_n they_o be_v lift_v up_o their_o humiliation_n be_v go_v now_o that_o you_o may_v have_v this_o humiliation_n to_o continue_v with_o you_o you_o must_v do_v as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v you_o james_n 4._o
