and_o body_n yea_o we_o will_v think_v that_o there_o have_v be_v plain_a collusion_n betwixt_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o that_o his_o suffering_n have_v be_v no_o suffering_n except_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o soul_n in_o some_o measure_n the_o hell_n which_o he_o sustain_v in_o fullmeasure_n so_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v clear_o understand_v the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v know_v how_o far_o we_o be_v indebt_v to_o christ_n who_o suffer_v such_o torment_n for_o our_o sin_n and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o able_a to_o thank_v he_o to_o praise_v his_o holy_a name_n he_o suffer_v his_o own_o servant_n to_o doubt_v but_o not_o to_o despair_v he_o forgive_v their_o doubt_n he_o forgive_v their_o stammering_n and_o in_o his_o own_o time_n he_o support_v they_o and_o bring_v we_o unto_o the_o water_n of_o life_n these_o doubt_n as_o i_o have_v often_o say_v soul_n may_v lodge_v in_o one_o soul_n with_o faith_n for_o doubt_v and_o faith_n be_v not_o direct_o opposite_a only_a faith_n and_o despair_n be_v opposite_a and_o therefore_o faith_n and_o despair_n can_v lodge_v both_o in_o one_o soul_n for_o despair_n overthrow_v the_o pillar_n of_o hope_n and_o where_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n there_o can_v be_v no_o faith_n but_o as_o for_o doubt_v it_o may_v lodge_v it_o will_v lodge_v and_o have_v lodge_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o best_a servant_n that_o ever_o god_n have_v mark_v the_o speech_n of_o the_o apostle_n we_o be_v always_o in_o doubt_n say_v he_o but_o we_o despair_v not_o 4._o so_o doubt_v and_o faith_n may_v lodge_v both_o in_o one_o soul_n and_o from_o whence_o flow_v this_o doubt_v we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o regenerate_a man_n there_o be_v a_o remnant_n of_o corruption_n for_o we_o have_v not_o our_o heaven_n in_o this_o earth_n though_o we_o begin_v our_o heaven_n here_o yet_o we_o get_v it_o not_o full_o here_o and_o if_o all_o corruption_n be_v take_v away_o what_o shall_v there_o want_v of_o a_o full_a heaven_n here_o so_o it_o be_v only_o begin_v in_o this_o life_n and_o not_o perfect_v therefore_o there_o remain_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o great_a corruption_n which_o be_v never_o idle_a but_o continual_o occupy_v this_o corruption_n be_v ever_o bring_v forth_o the_o birth_n of_o sin_n more_o or_o less_o every_o sin_n hurt_v the_o conscience_n a_o hurt_a conscience_n impair_v the_o persuasion_n &_o so_o come_v in_o the_o doubt_n for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o sin_n that_o we_o commit_v but_o it_o banish_v light_a and_o cast_v a_o mist_n over_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o faith_n wickedness_n into_o which_o we_o daily_o fall_v it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o effect_n of_o a_o lively_a faith_n will_v be_v interrupt_v and_o that_o thy_o lust_n and_o affection_n will_v prevail_v for_o a_o long_a time_n so_o that_o when_o thou_o look_v on_o thyself_o upon_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o hang_v over_o thy_o soul_n and_o body_n &_o when_o thou_o look_v upon_o thy_o dissolute_a life_n and_o on_o the_o anger_n of_o god_n against_o this_o dissolute_a life_n in_o the_o mind_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n of_o he_o that_o have_v so_o smother_v and_o oppress_v his_o faith_n it_o will_v oft_o time_n come_v to_o pass_v in_o his_o own_o judgement_n have_v his_o eye_n fix_v on_o himself_o only_o that_o he_o will_v think_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o reprobate_n to_o be_v a_o outcast_n and_o never_o able_a to_o recover_v mercy_n where_o this_o corruption_n burst_v forth_o in_o this_o gross_a manner_n after_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v call_v thou_o look_v how_o soon_o the_o lord_n begin_v to_o waken_v thou_o again_o incontinent_a thou_o fixe_v thy_o eyâ—s_n upon_o thy_o own_o life_n and_o enterest_n into_o a_o deep_a consideration_n as_o sacrament_n you_o may_v perceive_v easy_o that_o there_o be_v a_o conjunction_n by_o the_o effect_n although_o you_o can_v so_o well_o know_v the_o mannâ—r_n of_o conjunction_n and_o why_o you_o that_o there_o be_v a_o conjunction_n between_o the_o word_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o word_n as_o for_o example_n suppose_v paris_n be_v far_o distant_a from_o we_o yet_o if_o i_o speak_v of_o paris_n the_o word_n be_v no_o soon_o speak_v but_o the_o city_n will_v come_v into_o your_o mind_n if_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o king_n although_o he_o be_v far_o distant_a from_o we_o the_o word_n be_v no_o soon_o speak_v but_o the_o thing_n signify_v will_v come_v into_o your_o mind_n so_o this_o come_n of_o the_o thing_n signify_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n make_v it_o plain_a unto_o you_o that_o there_o be_v a_o conjunction_n between_o the_o word_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o word_n to_o tell_v you_o of_o this_o sort_n of_o conjunction_n it_o be_v not_o so_o easy_a because_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v not_o present_a unto_o the_o eye_n as_o the_o word_n be_v to_o the_o ear_n if_o every_o thing_n signify_v be_v as_o present_v unto_o your_o eye_n as_o the_o word_n be_v to_o the_o ear_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o see_v the_o conjunction_n but_o now_o see_v the_o conjunction_n be_v mystical_a secret_a and_o spiritual_a therefore_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o make_v you_o understand_v it_o ever_o observe_v what_o conjunction_n be_v between_o the_o simple_a word_n &_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o word_n the_o same_o kind_n of_o conjunction_n be_v between_o the_o sacrament_n &_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o sacrament_n for_o the_o sacrament_n be_v no_o other_o thing_n but_o a_o visible_a word_n i_o call_v it_o a_o visible_a word_n why_o because_o it_o convey_v the_o signification_n of_o it_o by_o the_o eye_n to_o the_o mind_n as_o this_o be_v a_o audible_a word_n because_o it_o convey_v the_o signification_n of_o it_o by_o the_o ear_n to_o the_o mind_n in_o the_o sacrament_n so_o often_o as_o you_o look_v on_o it_o you_o shall_v no_o soon_o see_v that_o bread_n with_o your_o eye_n but_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n shall_v come_v into_o your_o mind_n you_o shall_v no_o soon_o see_v that_o wine_n but_o after_o the_o preach_n and_o open_v up_o of_o the_o part_n of_o the_o sacrament_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n shall_v come_v into_o your_o mind_n now_o this_o conjunction_n between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v in_o the_o sacrament_n stand_v chief_o as_o you_o may_v perceive_v in_o two_o thing_n first_o in_o a_o relation_n between_o the_o sign_n &_o the_o thing_n signify_v which_o arise_v from_o a_o likeness_n and_o proportion_n betwixt_o they_o two_o for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o proportion_n and_o analogy_n between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o sign_n there_o can_v not_o be_v a_o sacrament_n or_o a_o relation_n so_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o conjunction_n stand_v in_o a_o relation_n which_o arise_v from_o a_o certain_a similitude_n and_o likeness_n which_o the_o one_o have_v with_o the_o other_o and_o this_o likeness_n may_v be_v easy_o perceive_v for_o look_v how_o able_a the_o bread_n be_v to_o nourish_v thy_o body_n to_o this_o life_n earthly_a and_o temporal_a the_o flesh_n of_o christ_n signify_v by_o the_o bread_n be_v as_o able_a to_o nourish_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n to_o life_n everlasting_a so_o you_o may_v perceive_v some_o kind_n of_o proportion_n between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v the_o second_o point_n of_o the_o conjunction_n stand_v in_o a_o continual_a and_o mutual_a concur_v the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v offer_v both_o together_o receive_v together_o at_o one_o time_n and_o in_o one_o action_n the_o one_o outward_o the_o other_o inward_o if_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o have_v a_o mouth_n in_o thy_o soul_n which_o be_v faith_n to_o receive_v it_o then_o the_o second_o point_n of_o conjunction_n stand_v in_o a_o joint_a offering_n &_o in_o a_o joint_a receive_n and_o this_o i_o call_v a_o concurrence_n then_o will_v you_o know_v what_o manner_n of_o conjunction_n be_v between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o relative_a conjunction_n a_o secret_a and_o a_o mystical_a conjunction_n which_o stand_v in_o a_o mutual_a relation_n there_o be_v no_o more_o to_o be_v observe_v herein_o but_o this_o only_a that_o if_o you_o conjoin_v these_o two_o you_o be_v careful_a not_o to_o confound_v they_o beware_v that_o you_o turn_v not_o the_o one_o into_o the_o other_o but_o keep_v either_o of_o they_o in_o his_o own_o integrity_n without_o confusion_n or_o permixtion_n of_o the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o and_o so_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o lawful_a conjunction_n that_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o sacrament_n there_o be_v not_o a_o lesson_n that_o can_v be_v learn_v out_o of_o this_o at_o the_o least_o that_o i_o can_v mark_v or_o gather_v except_o only_o the_o lesson_n of_o the_o kindness_n and_o goodness_n of_o the_o everliving_a god_n who_o have_v invent_v so_o many_o wonderful_a sort_n of_o conjunction_n and_o all_o to_o this_o purpose_n that_o we_o may_v be_v conjoin_v to_o advance_v this_o great_a and_o mystical_a conjunction_n betwixt_o the_o god_n of_o glory_n and_o we_o in_o the_o which_o conjunction_n our_o weal_n felicity_n and_o happiness_n in_o this_o life_n and_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v do_v only_o stand_v that_o he_o be_v so_o careful_a to_o conjoin_v himself_o with_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n that_o we_o in_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n may_v be_v conjoin_v with_o he_o if_o we_o be_v move_v with_o the_o care_n and_o love_n of_o god_n express_v in_o these_o conjunction_n though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o little_a on_o our_o part_n assure_o we_o will_v never_o defraud_v ourselves_o of_o the_o fruit_n of_o that_o happy_a conjunction_n nor_o bring_v it_o in_o such_o a_o loathe_n and_o disdain_n as_o we_o do_v at_o this_o day_n for_o we_o by_o follow_v and_o prefer_v of_o our_o pleasure_n to_o christ_n and_o his_o counsel_n have_v make_v the_o stomach_n of_o our_o soul_n so_o foul_a and_o ill_o dispose_v that_o either_o they_o receive_v he_o not_o at_o all_o or_o if_o he_o be_v receive_v he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o tarry_v and_o why_o because_o a_o foul_a stomach_n be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v he_o for_o incontinent_o we_o choke_v he_o so_o either_o with_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o with_o the_o care_n of_o this_o world_n that_o he_o be_v compel_v to_o depart_v and_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o both_o eat_v and_o digest_v he_o can_v do_v we_o no_o good_a &_o this_o digestion_n can_v be_v where_o there_o be_v not_o a_o greedy_a appetite_n to_o the_o receipt_n of_o he_o for_o if_o thou_o be_v not_o hungry_a for_o he_o he_o be_v not_o ready_a for_o thou_o and_o i_o be_o assure_v if_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o country_n be_v examine_v by_o this_o rule_n that_o there_o be_v none_o that_o receive_v christ_n but_o he_o that_o have_v a_o you_o suppose_v we_o have_v renounce_v the_o corporal_a and_o gross_a idolatry_n wherein_o our_o father_n be_v plunge_v &_o drown_v &_o which_o man_n in_o some_o part_n go_v about_o to_o erect_v now_o yet_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o this_o country_n and_o the_o behaviour_n of_o every_o one_o of_o we_o do_v testify_v there_o be_v not_o a_o man_n that_o have_v renounce_v that_o damnable_a idol_n that_o he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o soul_n nor_o the_o invisible_a idolatry_n that_o he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o mind_n there_o be_v not_o a_o man_n but_o to_o that_o same_o idol_n wherewith_o he_o
sacrament_n &_o defraud_v we_o of_o the_o profit_n &_o use_v thereof_o &_o these_o fault_n be_v either_o in_o the_o form_n or_o in_o the_o person_n in_o form_n if_o the_o essential_a form_n be_v spoil_v we_o get_v nothing_o for_o when_o the_o sacrament_n be_v spoil_v of_o the_o essential_a form_n it_o be_v not_o a_o sacrament_n there_o be_v a_o essential_a form_n in_o baptism_n &_o a_o of_o their_o own_o and_o mix_v with_o it_o yet_o in_o respect_n they_o keep_v the_o substantial_a form_n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a that_o they_o who_o be_v baptize_v under_o they_o be_v rebaptise_v indeed_o if_o the_o virtue_n of_o regeneration_n flow_v from_o the_o person_n it_o be_v something_o but_o in_o respect_n christ_n have_v this_o to_o give_v to_o who_o and_o when_o he_o please_v the_o essential_a form_n be_v keep_v it_o be_v not_o necessary_a that_o this_o sacrament_n be_v reiterate_v now_o what_o be_v the_o fault_n in_o the_o person_n that_o pervert_v the_o sacrament_n the_o fault_n may_v be_v either_o in_o the_o person_n of_o the_o giver_n or_o in_o the_o person_n of_o the_o receiver_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o those_o common_a fault_n which_o be_v common_a to_o all_o but_o of_o such_o fault_n as_o disable_v the_o person_n of_o the_o giver_n to_o be_v a_o distributer_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o take_v the_o office_n from_o he_o so_o when_o the_o person_n of_o the_o giver_n be_v this_o way_n disable_v no_o question_n it_o be_v not_o a_o sacrament_n then_o again_o in_o the_o person_n of_o the_o receiver_n the_o fault_n may_v be_v if_o their_o child_n be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n but_o out_o of_o it_o they_o get_v not_o the_o sacrament_n indeed_o if_o the_o parent_n afterward_o come_v to_o the_o covenant_n the_o child_n though_o they_o be_v get_v out_o of_o the_o covenant_n may_v be_v receive_v even_o so_o in_o the_o lord_n supper_n if_o a_o man_n be_v lade_v with_o any_o burden_n of_o sin_n without_o any_o purpose_n to_o repent_v he_o ought_v not_o to_o receive_v it_o so_o than_o if_o you_o come_v without_o a_o purpose_n to_o repent_v you_o lose_v the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n it_o be_v only_o this_o purpose_n to_o repent_v that_o make_v i_o who_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n to_o get_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n thereof_o therefore_o every_o one_o who_o go_v to_o the_o sacrament_n must_v look_v what_o purpose_n he_o have_v in_o this_o fear_n in_o awe_n that_o hope_v of_o heavenly_a joy_n so_o swallow_v up_o and_o devour_v the_o fear_n and_o make_v it_o to_o appear_v to_o the_o looker_n on_o that_o the_o soul_n have_v no_o as_o if_o he_o have_v offend_v no_o creature_n he_o address_v he_o to_o god_n and_o crave_v pardon_n and_o mercy_n for_o his_o sin_n of_o he_o only_o so_o this_o be_v the_o true_a repentance_n where_o man_n and_o woman_n although_o they_o have_v offend_v the_o creature_n yet_o they_o run_v to_o god_n only_o to_o seek_v remission_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o right_a way_n for_o why_o it_o be_v only_a god_n that_o can_v forgive_v they_o their_o sin_n although_o they_o have_v offend_v man_n &_o woman_n there_o be_v no_o man_n nor_o woman_n that_o be_v able_a to_o purge_v theâ—r_a conscience_n to_o take_v away_o the_o guiltiness_n of_o sin_n in_o their_o conscience_n it_o be_v only_a god_n who_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n do_v purge_v the_o conscience_n therefore_o they_o address_v they_o to_o god_n only_o proper_o also_o it_o be_v he_o who_o they_o have_v offend_v for_o as_o for_o man_n and_o woman_n they_o may_v escape_v their_o eye_n but_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o they_o can_v escape_v the_o all-seeing_a eye_n of_o god_n who_o see_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o body_n therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o all-seeing_a eye_n it_o become_v they_o special_o to_o have_v recourse_n to_o he_o &_o to_o address_v they_o to_o he_o only_o this_o be_v call_v the_o godly_a sorrow_n in_o this_o part_n you_o have_v only_o this_o to_o beware_v of_o repentance_n for_o the_o devil_n be_v ever_o ready_a at_o thy_o hand_n and_o this_o caution_n be_v not_o only_o necessary_a for_o a_o hard_a wilful_a heart_n but_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n through_o the_o weightinesse_n of_o their_o sin_n conceive_v overdeep_a sorrow_n in_o their_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n they_o will_v be_v help_v for_o bring_v forth_o a_o turn_n from_o sin_n for_o i_o can_v never_o turn_v from_o it_o if_o i_o hate_v it_o not_o this_o turn_n from_o the_o sin_n bring_v forth_o a_o flight_n that_o be_v a_o further_o dolour_n mortification_n this_o part_n of_o repentance_n be_v call_v mortification_n or_o as_o the_o ancient_n call_v it_o contrition_n it_o be_v call_v mortification_n because_o by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o work_v this_o dolour_n sin_n be_v mortify_v it_o slay_v the_o lust_n and_o affection_n that_o be_v in_o i_o it_o take_v away_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o sin_n within_o i_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o which_o slaughter_n it_o be_v call_v mortification_n for_o christ_n not_o only_o overcome_v sin_n and_o death_n &_o hell_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o death_n perfect_o in_o his_o own_o person_n but_o he_o spoil_v sin_n and_o death_n of_o his_o power_n and_o carry_v such_o a_o rich_a &_o honourable_a triumph_n over_o they_o all_o that_o sin_n have_v lose_v his_o power_n and_o death_n have_v lose_v his_o sting_n so_o that_o whosoever_o can_v get_v hold_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o power_n by_o the_o virtue_n thereof_o sin_n shall_v die_v in_o he_o and_o his_o affection_n shall_v be_v daily_o by_o little_a &_o little_o slay_v in_o respect_n of_o the_o which_o effect_n this_o part_n of_o repentance_n be_v call_v mortification_n of_o this_o godly_a prophet_n conversion_n by_o the_o apostle_n himself_o rom._n 2._o circumcision_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o christ_n speak_v of_o repentance_n he_o speak_v of_o it_o under_o the_o name_n of_o conversion_n as_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o repentance_n speak_v to_o the_o man_n of_o galilee_n luk._n 13._o except_o also_o you_o repent_v you_o shall_v all_o perish_v also_o that_o be_v except_o
